Five female beagles were examined periodically throughout their second biannual cycle of proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and anestrus for fluctuations in several physiological and behavioral charateristics. Physiological measures included plasma levels of estradiol and progesterone as well as the vulvar swelling and vaginal bleeding that begin with proestrus and continue in estrus. Behavioral tests revealed changes in female receptivity, attractivity, and proceptivity. Estradiol increased prior to the onset of proestrus and declined during estrus. Progesterone levels were low during most of proestrus, increased from the beginning to the end of estrus, and remained elevated during the first month or more of metestrus. While they were in proestrous females were not receptive but they and their vaginal secretions were highly attractive to males. Attractivity remained high throughout estrus and declined abruptly in the next 24 hr. Receptivity increased over the first 3 days of estrus and continued at a high level until the last 3 days during which it decreased slightly, and then dropped nearly to zero within the next 24 hr. “Sexual reflexes” of the vulva, tail, and hindquarters followed the same course of changes described for attractivity. Proceptive behavior, including seeking proximity to caged males and display of solicitation responses during mating tests was characteristic of females during proestrus and estrus but uncommon or absent in other phases of the cycle. It is hypothesized that in the natural cycle, attractivity and proceptivity develop during proestrus as a consequence of rapidly increasing secretion of estrogen. The onset of receptivity is due to synergistic action of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen secreted during proestrus primes the system, and progesterone secreted just before and during estrus activates it. Termination of receptivity is thought to be due to the marked decline in estrogen, to inhibition by high concentrations of progesterone, or to a combination of these factors.  相似文献

Reports on the behavior of spider monkeys (genus Ateles) describe a suite of 5-6 behaviors that are indicative of an estrous female. This study presents hormonal data as an independent measure of reproductive state to determine if these behaviors are associated with any particular reproductive state or stage of the ovarian cycle. Fecal samples collected from 6 free-ranging female black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) over the course of 11 months were assayed for estrogen (E1C) and progesterone (PdG) metabolites, using an enzyme immunoassay. Behavioral data collected from the same females were analyzed for patterns associated with different reproductive states. A more detailed analysis of behavioral data associated with reproductively cycling periods determined whether each behavior clustered with copulations or a particular phase in the ovarian cycle. Observations of place-sniffing were more frequent for 4 of 5 females when reproductively cycling. Of all copulations observed, 80% occurred when the female participant was reproductively cycling. In addition, the rates of self-clitoral hold and self-clitoral rub behaviors were significantly higher for 2 of 4 and 4 of 5 of females, respectively, when reproductively cycling. No behavior consistently occurred in association with copulations or with any particular phase in the ovarian cycle. Results from this study suggest that the behaviors tested in this paper can provide some information regarding female spider monkey reproductive state (whether or not she is reproductively cycling), but that they are not indicators of estrus in female spider monkeys.  相似文献

In this study, we quantitatively examined male sexual behavior in relation to fecal estrogen and progesterone concentrations in female Mohor gazelles. We investigated the hypothesis that, during natural mating, males detect cues relating to the potential for successful conception and pregnancy. Time series analysis revealed that males could detect the approach of estrus 2-3 days before female fecal estrogens and estrogen/progestagen (E/P) ratio reached their peak values. Males also paid closer attention to those females excreting higher fecal estrogen concentrations. Mounting and copulation frequencies were positively correlated with both peri-ovulatory fecal estrogen concentrations, and the frequency of pre-copulatory courtship behaviors. These data suggested that males invest their reproductive effort selectively by mating the most fertile females, assuming that estrogen is a valid index of fertility. This assumption was investigated by examining sequential phases of the reproductive cycle for evidence that oocytes and follicles produced in a more estrogenic environment would lead to the formation of the most competent corpora lutea, thereby maximizing the chance of sustaining pregnancy. Associations between sexual behavior and hormone excretion support the hypothesis that males may use this mechanism to assess female fertility.  相似文献

Sociosexual behavior was monitored on a daily basis for 3 months in 5 pairs of golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). Urine samples were collected daily from each female and urinary estrogen cycles were determined by radioimmunoassay. Mounts and copulations were observed during all phases of the estrogen cycle. Peaks or regular cycles in sexual behavior were not documented. There were no significant changes in affiliative behavior by females or males that were associated with changes in urinary estrogen values. A negative relationship between pair bond duration and frequency of sexual interactions was observed: newly established pairs exhibited 2-6 times more frequent sexual behavior than a long-established pair. The lack of a conspicuous sexual signal in female golden lion tamarins may be related to a pattern of continuous sexual receptivity. Both reproductive patterns, concealed estrus and continuous receptivity, are explicable in relation to either monogamous or polyandrous mating systems.  相似文献

The use of digital infrared thermal imaging to detect estrus in gilts   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Yorkshire/Landrace crossbred gilts (N = 32) were evaluated using digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) to discriminate between estrus and diestrus phases of the porcine estrous cycle. Gilts (N = 32) were part of an ongoing reproductive efficiency study involving the use of raw soybean (RSB; N = 15) versus soybean meal (SBM; N = 17) as a source of dietary protein. Gilts were monitored daily for signs of estrus using a teaser boar. Thermal images of vulva surface temperatures (TEMP) were recorded at standing estrus and diestrus. Measurements for analysis included minimum (MIN), maximum (MAX), mean (AVG), and standard deviation (SD) of temperature gradients. At imaging, ambient (AMB) and rectal temperatures (RT) were recorded, and blood samples taken for serum progesterone (P4) concentration analysis (by RIA) to confirm stage of cycle. Mean serum progesterone values at estrus and diestrus were (mean ± SD) 1.0 ± 0.1 and 10.9 ± 0.8 ng/mL, respectively. Vulva MIN, MAX, and AVG thermal images were positively correlated with one another (P < 0.01), and were positively correlated with ambient temperature (P < 0.01). Vulva MAX and AVG thermal temperatures were greater (P < 0.05) at estrus than at diestrus (36.6 ± 0.2 °C and 33.4 ± 0.3 °C vs. 35.6 ± 0.3 °C and 31.8 ± 0.6 °C, respectively), whereas MIN and SD had no differences (P > 0.05) between stages of the cycle. No differences (P > 0.05) in RT were detected between stages and RT was not significantly correlated with vulva thermal images. Diet had no significant effect on RT or vulva temperature.  相似文献

The objective was to evaluate ovarian activity reversibility in domestic queens after short-term contraceptive treatment with deslorelin acetate. Ten mature queens were used. In all queens, the estrous cycle was evaluated every 72 h by vaginal cytology (VC) and behavior assessments. When queens had VC characteristic of interestrus or diestrus, one deslorelin acetate implant (4.7 mg) was placed in the subcutaneous tissue of the interscapular region (day of insertion = Day 0). Thereafter, VC was performed every 48 h and on Day 90, implants were removed. At Day 100, estrus and ovulation were induced with 100 IU eCG (im), followed by 100 IU hCG (im), 84 h later (Day 103.5). Queens were ovariohysterectomized on Day 106. Corpora lutea (CL) were counted, oviducts were flushed, and oocytes were identified, isolated and stained to assess viability. In all queens, blood samples for plasma progesterone concentrations were collected once a week, from Days −21 to 106. After deslorelin acetate application, four queens had VC and behavior typical of estrus, and one ovulated. Furthermore, ovulation occurred in three queens that did not have VC or behavior consistent with estrus. After the initial ovarian stimulation, all females had anestrous VC during the deslorelin treatment period. Implants were readily removed. Following implant removal, all females responded to treatments to induce estrus and ovulation. There were (mean ± SEM) 13.1 ± 5.5 CL and 8.1 ± 5.5 oocytes per queen; the oocyte recovery rate was 56.8 ± 25.4% and all recovered oocytes were viable. We concluded that deslorelin acetate can be used as a reversible short-term contraceptive in domestic cats, because estrus and ovulation were successfully induced following implant removal.  相似文献

The behaviors of intact or ovariectomized, estradiol benzoate-treated or estradiol benzoate followed by progesterone-treated female brown lemmings were compared. Intact, diestrous females engaged in more social interactions with a male than did ovariectomized females (Experiment 1). In the first 5 min of a 1-hr mating exposure (Experiment 2, Test A) intact females in natural estrus engaged in more social and sexual behaviors than did ovariectomized females in estrogen-induced estrus. However, during the last 5 min of the 1-hr exposure (Test B) ovariectomized females receiving estrogen alone continued to show high levels of sexual activity with a male partner, while intact estrous females or females receiving estrogen followed by progesterone showed an apparent drop in sexual receptivity and an increase in aggressivity. Aggressive behaviors, as indexed by threat-leap behaviors on the part of the female may increase in the presence of progesterone. Declines in sexual activity, occurring within 1 hr of progesterone injection, were apparently dependent on the interaction of progesterone and copulatory events which may affect both the male and female.  相似文献

This study examined the relationships between male agonistic, affiliative, and sexual behaviors and female estrus condition in captive adolescent and young-adult chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Data on agonistic, affiliative, and sexual behaviors of 11 males living in three social groups were collected during daily 45 minute observations over a 5 month period. Female estrus condition was assessed daily using the relative size of the female's ano-genital swelling. It was hypothesized that the presence of maximally tumescent females would generate conflicts between males, so an increase in inter-male agonism was predicted. Males exhibited higher rates of agonism toward other males when at least one female in the group was maximally tumescent. Male affiliative behavior directed toward other males and social play with males were affected by the presence and number of maximally tumescent females. Male sexual behavior increased when maximally tumescent females were present.  相似文献

Giant panda courtship behavior includes multimodal signaling assemblages consisting of olfactory, vocal, and postural elements. While signaling is generally conspicuous, successful copulation is inconsistently achieved in captivity, even when female behavioral and physiological data indicate that ovulation is imminent. We set out to characterize these complex patterns of social behavior by observing interactions between 26 unique pairs of giant pandas housed in adjoining pens throughout the females' reproductive cycle. We categorized social behaviors from a transactional perspective and examined social exchanges via analyses of the relative frequency of social behaviors, and via the sequential relationship between male and female social behavior. From non‐estrus to peak‐estrus, we found that the relative frequency of female affiliative and sexual behavior increased and that the relative frequency of ambivalent and aggressive behavior decreased. Male behavior was fairly constant, except for sexual behavior, which increased during peak‐estrus, when it was facilitated by female sexual behavior. Sequential analysis of social interactions showed that preceding behavior had a significant influence over the other panda's response behavior primarily during peak‐estrus, suggesting that pandas are most responsive to conspecific signaling during the peri‐ovulatory period. However, behavioral momentum was a dominant feature of the intra‐individual transitions. Females maintained sexual, ambivalent, and neutral behavior during interactions significantly more than would be expected by chance, with male behavior bearing little influence once the behavior was initiated. A similar pattern was also observed in males, who maintained affiliative, interested, and neutral behaviors. Overall, our data suggest that the multimodal signals used by giant pandas during courtship do not consistently evoke a discrete, immediate response from receivers. Instead, signals appear to advertise reproductive condition and influence potential mates over longer timeframes, suggesting the potential tonic role of communication.  相似文献

Two studies examined the roles of estrogen with progesterone and of estrogen alone on the proceptive and receptive behavior of female hamsters. Proceptivity was measured in terms of proximity (approaching, leaving, and following by the female) and in time spent sniffing the male partner. During the 4-day natural estrous cycle, these measures change systematically although lordosis is seen only on Day 1 (estrus). With a constant dose of progesterone, both proceptive and receptive behavior were found to be estrogen dose dependent in ovariectomized females. At estrogen levels too low to induce lordosis, changes in proceptive behavior were seen; at the two highest levels of estrogen, lordosis was maximal but proceptive behavior continued to increase. With estrogen alone, levels of proceptive behavior were attained characteristic both of estrus and of the higher estrogen and progesterone dosage but were not accompanied by spontaneous lordosis. Factors indicating that proceptivity and receptivity may be under separate hormonal and neural control are discussed.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were (1) to establish the characteristics of estrus behavior in mithun cows (n = 12) and (2) to determine the relationships between this behavior and the plasma concentrations of estradiol-17beta (E2), total estrogen, and progesterone. Estrus was detected by visual observations of estrus signs, per recta examination of genitalia and bull parading thrice a day for three consecutive cycles. Among the behavioral signs of estrus, the cow to be mounted by bull (100%) was the best indicator of estrus followed by standing to be mounted (92%). Per rectum examination of genital organs revealed relaxed and open os externa of cervix, turgid uterus, and ovaries having palpable follicles in all animals. The mean (+/-SEM) length of estrus cycle and duration of estrus were recorded to be 21.8 +/- 0.69 days and 12.6 +/- 1.34 h, respectively. Endocrine profiles during the peri-estrus period showed that the mean highest peak concentrations of E2 (27.29 +/- 0.79 pg/ml) and total estrogen (45.69 +/- 2.32 pg/ml) occurred at -3.90 +/- 2.27 and -3.89 +/- 2.26 h prior to the onset of estrus, respectively. Plasma progesterone concentration was basal (0.14 +/- 0.001 ng/ml) during the peri-estrus period. Plasma E2 and total estrogen were found to increase from 6 days before estrus to reach a peak level on the day of estrus and decline thereafter to basal level on day 3 of the cycle. The plasma progesterone concentration was the lowest on the day of estrus showing gradual increase to register a peak level on day 15 of the cycle. Estrus behavior was found to be positively correlated with the maximum peak concentration of E2 (r = 0.89; P < 0.0001) and total estrogen (r = 0.66; P = 0.019) during the peri-estrus period. The mean total estrogen concentration during the peri-estrus period was significantly correlated with estrus behavior (r = 0.60; P = 0.04). The correlations between the estrus behavior and E2:progesterone ratios at 6 days before the onset of estrus (r = 0.92) and on the day of estrus (r = 0.95) was significant. The total estrogen:progesterone ratios at 6 days before the onset of estrus and on the day of estrus were also positively correlated with the estrus behavior (r = 0.86 and 0.88). In conclusion, our results suggest that the maximum peak concentration of E2 and total estrogen and mean level of total estrogen during the peri-estrus period and the E2:progesterone and total estrogen:progesterone ratios on 6 days before the onset of estrus and on the day of estrus are the important factors contributing the behavioral manifestation of estrus in mithun cows.  相似文献

In this study, four crab-eating fox females (Cerdocyon thous) maintained at the Federal University of Mato Grosso Zoo, Cuiabá, Brazil, were investigated for 16 mo, using transabdominal ultrasonography and measurement of estradiol and progesterone concentrations in blood plasma and feces. Blood collection and ultrasonography were performed once a month, whereas fecal collections were performed three times a week. During the experimental period, there was an annual estrous cycle in all females, with the reproductive season lasting from winter to spring, and three became pregnant. Transabdominal ultrasonography was inconclusive for characterization of estrus cycles phase, but was effective for early detection of pregnancy, pregnancy monitoring, and for evaluating postpartum uterine involution. There were similarities between C. thous female's reproductive aspect and bitches, with similar pregnancy data, although uterine involution was faster in C. thous. Peak serum concentrations of P4 and E2 were (mean ± SD) 14.58 ± 5.8 ng/ml and 31.62 ± 53.54 pg/ml, respectively, whereas mean fecal peaks of P4 and E2 were 2.37 ± 1.42 ng/g and 157.95 ± 82.63 pg/g, respectively. All pregnant females had serum and fecal P4 concentrations reaching maximum values (16.5 ± 4.0 ng/ml and 2.7 ± 0.4 ng/g, respectively) from 10 to 30 d of gestation; those values subsequently declined, reaching baseline at parturition (5.0 ± 4.0 and 0.7 ± 0.4 ng/g, respectively). Peaks of E2 occurred throughout the year, and were absent only during apparent lactational anestrus.  相似文献

Formosan gem‐faced civets are classified to be endemic sub‐species of Paguma larvata in Taiwan. Little about their reproductive physiology has been reported. This study was designed to characterize the ovarian activity throughout the year and define ovarian cycle length and the lengths of its component phases. Serum samples were collected for enzyme immunoassay (progesterone and estradiol) from seven captive civets twice weekly for 1 year. Meanwhile, periodic changes in external genitalia (vulva swelling) and vaginal cytology were examined and recorded. Results showed estrous cycles exhibited two types: 18‐day (18.5±1.1, n=64) and 28‐day (27.6±1.0, n=28) as shown by progesterone and estradiol fluctuations and corresponding changes in vulva morphology and vaginal cytology. Both types showed a similar 7‐day follicular phase, peaking progesterone at Day 7. The 18‐day cycle type prevails in the spring and summer whereas the 28‐day cycle type is significant in the autumn. In summary, female gem‐faced civets are polyestrous (approximately 13 cycles/year), and non‐typical seasonal breeders, with follicular phase and two distinct durations of luteal phases (diestrus) cycling throughout the year, but the frequency of ovarian cycles was remarkably gradually decreased from September to February of next year. To date, there is no information on gonadal steroidogenic activity of female goral (Naemorhedus griseus), a threatened species of Thailand. Captive goral populations have been established to produce animals for ex situ conservation and reintroduction, but as yet none are self-sustaining. The objectives of the present study were to (1) determine the influence of season on ovarian steriodogenic function; and (2) examine the relationship between gonadal hormone excretion and sexual behaviors throughout the year. Fecal samples were collected 5 to 7 days/wk for 15 months from 8 adult females housed at Omkoi Wildlife Breeding Center in Thailand and analyzed for ovarian steroid metabolites using validated enzyme immunoassays. Observations of sexual behaviors and mating were conducted each morning for 30 min/session. Based on fecal estrogen and progestagen metabolite concentrations, the overall estrous cycle length was about 21 days, with a 2- to 3-day follicular phase and an 18- to 20-day luteal phase. Sexual behaviors, most notably tail-up, increased for 2 to 3 days during the time estrogens were elevated during mating. Fecal progestagens were elevated during luteal phases and increased further during gestation, which lasted approximately 7 months. The lactation period was 5 months, and females were anestrus for 2 to 5 of those months, with the exception of one that cycled continuously throughout. Two females conceived around 2 months postpartum and so were pregnant during lactation. Birth records over the past 21 years indicated young are born throughout the year. This combined with the hormonal data suggests that female gorals are not strongly seasonal, at least in captivity, although there was considerable variation among females in estrogen and progestagen patterns. In conclusion, fecal steroid metabolite monitoring is an effective means of assessing ovarian function in this species and will be a useful tool for breeding management and planned development of assisted reproductive techniques such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects on the reproductive performance of the Mexican hairless pig (MHP) while inducing fertile lactational estrus. Lactational estrus was induced on day 8, postpartum, in 20 primiparous sows during two consecutive reproductive cycles. Boar presence and temporary litter withdrawal were used as stimuli. Group I did not receive stimuli (control, C); group II had a 15 min boar stimulus (B); group III had litter withdrawal for 4 h (LW), and group IV received both stimuli (B + LW). Fertile estrus was detected by sow behavior, exfoliative vaginal cytology, and 17 beta-estradiol and progesterone samples. Individual stimuli did not induce fertile lactational estrus; nevertheless, when used together, both stimuli induced 100% of females into estrus, and 80% of them got pregnant while lactating. The partial withdrawal of the litter had a significant and positive effect on the number of live born piglets. Sows pregnant during lactation had shorter reproductive cycles, by not having non-productive days and litter size was greater. Pregnancy induction during lactation allowed the Mexican hairless sow to reduce the period between parturition's without diminishing the lactation length and litter performance.  相似文献

The hormonal regulation of hepatic synthesis of vitellogenin during the annual reproductive cycle was performed for the first time in the deserticole, oviparous, diurnal and herbivorous Uromastyx acanthinura, a lizard belonging to the Agamidae family. In order to elucidate what kind of estrogen receptor is involved in this process, an immunohistochemical study was performed. Changes were obtained in the labeling and cellular distribution of the estrogen and progesterone receptors according to the period of the reproductive cycle and the experimental administration of 17β-estradiol. Only the ERβ subtype was present; it was found in all phases of the cycle with a variable localization: nuclear and cytosolic during vitellogenesis, mainly cytosolic in the female with egg retention (luteal phase) and strictly cytosolic in females at sexual rest. The progesterone receptors were present only at the luteal phase and during sexual rest and disappeared completely from females after 17β-estradiol treatment in sexual rest. Our data suggested that mediation of action of the 17β-estradiol in the vitellogenin synthesis in the lizard U. acanthinura occured via ERβ. PRA and PRB could both be necessary for the negative effect of progesterone on the hepatic synthesis of vitellogenin.  相似文献

Female golden hamsters exposed to short photoperiods become anestrous and exhibit daily surges of gonadotropins and progesterone. Since little is known about the transition between the cycling and anovulatory states, the following experiments were done to determine whether there are hormonal changes that precede cessation of estrous cyclicity. Females killed on the morning of estrus, up to the tenth estrous cycle in short days, showed no hormonal or ovarian morphologic evidence of changes in reproductive function. When assessed on the afternoon of estrus, however, serum levels of luteinizing hormone and progesterone increased significantly before vaginal and ovarian cyclicity ceased. Females sampled in both the morning and afternoon at increasing durations since their last vaginal estrus revealed that maximal daily surges of both gonadotropins and progesterone were not consistently manifested until the vaginal cycle had been absent for 2 weeks. By then, estrogen levels and uterine weights were low and ovaries showed hypertrophied interstitia and arrested follicular growth. We have demonstrated that there are hormonal changes in females before the loss of the vaginal cycle and onset of major daily hormonal surges. Our results suggest that alterations in feedback relationships between steroid hormones and gonadotropins may precede photoperiod-induced anestrus.  相似文献

In many primate species, conspicuous behavioral and/or morphological changes are indicators of the fertile phase of the female cycle. However, several primate species, such as the white-faced capuchin, lack these cues. This is referred to as "concealed ovulation," and is argued to be a reproductive strategy that confuses paternity and lowers the risk of infanticide. We studied 10 adult female white-faced capuchins in Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica, from January to June 2002. We determined their ovarian cycling patterns by analyzing fecal ovarian hormones, and compared simultaneously collected behavioral data to determine which, if any, cues females use to signal their fertile phases. We found that four females cycled during the study period but ceased to cycle without becoming pregnant. We considered several explanations for the lack of conception during our study, including reproductive seasonality. We found that female C. capucinus showed only small increases in rates of affiliative/proceptive behaviors directed toward adult males during their periovulatory phases. The best indicator of cycle phase was a significant increase in male affiliative behaviors (e.g., following and grooming bouts) and sexual behaviors (e.g., copulations and courtship displays) directed toward females during the periovulatory phase compared to the nonovulatory phase. Our finding that females exhibit little proceptive behavior, but that copulations and male courtship are nonetheless concentrated in periovulatory phases suggests that even though females do not provide behavioral and morphological cues to ovulation, males are still able to detect it. Infanticide occurs with some frequency in these monkeys, and there is evidence for postconceptive mating as a female strategy to lower risk of infanticide via paternity confusion. However, despite this occurrence of nonconceptive mating and the absence of female cues to ovulation, truly concealed ovulation does not appear to be characteristic of this study population of white-faced capuchins.  相似文献

The effects of estrogen and progesterone on the social and sexual behavior of brown lemmings, Lemmus trimucronatus, were investigated. The behavior of hormone-treated and untreated ovariectomized females and sexually vigorous males was observed in six consecutive daily 5-min dyadic encounters. Sexual receptivity, as measured by lordosis, and other social behaviors including nasonasal contact, boxing postures, allogrooming, perineal investigation, and male mounting increased following 48 hr of exposure to daily injections of 0.5 μg estradiol benzoate (EB). Lordosis in EB-primed females was not facilitated or inhibited by short-term (4 hr) exposure to 0.5 mg progesterone (P). Long-term (greater than 24 hr) exposure to P apparently inhibited lordosis and other social behaviors in EB-treated females, although males continued to attempt to mount these females. In EB-treated females a dramatic increase in threat-leaps, directed by the female toward the male, was observed within 4 hr of P injection. Threat-leaps declined when P was withdrawn. Threat-leaps were also observed in ovariectomized females after prolonged exposure to P only (0.5 mg/day). Vaginal perforation and cornification were first apparent 48 hr after EB injection. The onset of sexual cycle postpartum was described in the collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu). Serum progesterone and 17beta-estradiol profiles, vaginal smears and external genitalia were analyzed in 20 animals housed with their piglets during the first postpartum month. The appearance of external genitalia showed no variation in any of the females: a shallow, reddish vulva, and vaginal mucus were constant features throughout the study. Based on hormonal profiles and vaginal smear cell patterns, 16 (80%) of the 20 peccaries showed signs of estrus and were considered cycling. The remaining four females (20%) did no show signs of estrus confirmed by low levels of progesterone (0.9+/-0.4 ng/mL) during the first postpartum month. In the cycling peccaries, a serum 17beta-estradiol peak (53.4+/-8.1 pg/mL) was observed on Day 7+/-1 postpartum, along with a linear increase in progesterone concentration from 3 (4.3+/-2.6 ng/mL) to 11 (30.8+/-4.9 ng/mL) days after this estradiol peak. Proportions of the different cells of the vaginal epithelium also changed in these females: superficial plus intermediate cells amounted to 76% of the cell total between Days 6 and 9 postpartum, corresponding to the estradiol peak. Nine (56%) of the 16 cycling females mated, indicated by the presence of sperm cells in their vaginal smears, and 6 (67%) became pregnant, reaching term. Non-pregnant cycling females (n=10) showed a steady decrease in serum progesterone concentration from 11 to 23 days after the estradiol peak, when basal levels were attained and a new estradiol peak registered, indicating the resumption of cyclicity in these females. The time interval between the two estradiol peaks was 23.5+/-2.1 days in these females. In pregnant females, progesterone concentrations continued to rise to levels of 60 ng/mL (n=6) 23 days after mating. These findings indicate that the lactating collared peccary female can become cycling and fertile during the early postpartum period, and that a predominance of superficial plus intermediate vaginal cells can be taken as the first sign of estrus.  相似文献
