The objective was to evaluate the potential risks associated with embryo transfer from mares bred with equine arteritis virus (EAV) infective semen. Twenty-six mares were embryo donors, whereas 18 unvaccinated and EAV antibody seronegative mares were embryo recipients. Of the 26 donor mares, 15 were unvaccinated and seronegative for antibodies to EAV and 11 were vaccinated for the first time with a commercially available modified live virus vaccine against EVA before breeding and subsequent embryo transfer. All donor mares were bred with EAV-infective semen from a stallion persistently infected with the virus. Twenty-four embryos were recovered 7 d post-ovulation; all were subjected in sequential order to five washes in embryo flush medium, two trypsin treatments, and five additional washes in embryo flush medium (prior to transfer). Twelve and seven embryos (Grades 1 or 2) were transferred from the non-vaccinated and vaccinated donors, respectively, and pregnancy was established in 3 of 12 and 2 of 7. Perhaps trypsin reduced embryo viability and pregnancy rate. The uterine flush fluid of 11 mares (9 of 15 and 2 of 11 from non-vaccinated and vaccinated donor groups, respectively) was positive for EAV by VI (confirmed by real-time RT-PCR); the wash fluid from the embryos of nine of these mares was negative following 10 washes and two trypsin treatments. However, the embryo wash fluid from two mares was still positive for EAV after all 10 washes and the two trypsin treatments, and one embryo was positive for EAV. Two of 18 recipient mares had seroconverted to EAV 28 d after embryo transfer. Virus was not detected in any fetal tissues or fluids harvested after pregnancies were terminated (60 d). In conclusion, we inferred that the washing protocol of 10 washes and two trypsin treatments did not eliminate EAV from all embryos; due to limitations in experimental design, this requires confirmation. Furthermore, there may be a risk of EAV transmission associated with in vivo embryo transfer from a donor mare inseminated with EAV infective semen.  相似文献

Karyotype analysis was done on a stallion that impregnated 23 mares during the 1991 breeding season, of which 14 aborted between 2 and 4 mo fo gestation. Lymphocytes examined contained a 64,XY complement of normal appearing sex chromosomes and autosomes, except for slight dimorphism of the centric heterochromatin of chromosome No. 1. A skin biopsy was procured form the stallion for karyotype analysis, and the stallion was bred to 11 mares. Three mares were detected pregnant 16, 35, 45 d after breeding. The fetuses were recovered transcervically using curved intestinal forceps 47 (n=2) and 49 (n=1) d after breeding. Fetal tissue was rinsed and packed in culture media, transported overnight in a chilled container, cultured by standard tissue culture techniques, and prepared for karyotype analysis. No abnormalities were found in standard karyotypes from those cultures. One fetal karyotype revealed slight dimorphism of the heterochromatin of chromosome No. 1. Chromosome spreads obtained from the stallion's skin biopsy revealed a normal karyotype with no difference in the amount of heterochromatin present in No. 1 chromosomes. During the 1992 breeding season, the stallion impregnated 23 of 25 mares bred. Only 1 mare aborted, at 8 mo of gestation. Apparently, the amount of heterochromatin of No. 1 horse chromosomes can vary, and caution should be used in diagnosing this as a cause of pregnancy failure.  相似文献

A rested stallion was introduced daily for 30 days into each of three herds of 20 mares. Observations of sexual and mating behavior were made for one hour. The stallion remained with a herd until another stallion was introduced the following day. Other mares were isolated from stallions and were bred by artificial insemination. The diameter or growth rate of the preovulatory follicle for the six days preceding ovulation and the length of the interovulatory interval for mares which did not become pregnant were not affected significantly by the presence of a stallion. The number of breedings per hour of observation (2.4 ±0.2) and the length of the interval from introduction of a stallion into the herd of mares to first breeding (12 ±1 min) were significantly different among stallions, but the length of the interval between breedings (17 ±2 min) was not. The mean number of breedings per stallion per hour was not affected significantly by the number of posturing (estrous) mares. The number of times that the stallion rebred the same mare when more than one mare postured during the observation hour (49%) was greater (P<0.01) than what would be expected to occur by chance (30%). The hypothesis that breeding occurs preferentially in those estrous mares that are closest to ovulation was not supported, except for significantly lower breeding activity in posturing mares on days 8 and 7 before ovulation and on days 0 (day of ovulation) and ?1 (26% bred) than on days 6 to 1 (52%).  相似文献

Semen quality, mare status and mare management during estrus will have the greatest impact on pregnancy rates when breeding mares with frozen semen. If semen quality is not optimal, mare selection and reproductive management are crucial in determining the outcome. In addition to mare selection, client communication is a key factor in a frozen semen program. Old maiden mares and problem mares should be monitored for normal cyclicity and all, except young maidens, should have at least a uterine culture and cytology performed. Mares with positive bacterial cultures and cytologies should be treated at least three consecutive days when in estrus with the proper antibiotic. With frozen semen, timing the ovulation is highly desirable in order to reduce the interval between breeding and ovulation. The use of ovulation inducing agents such as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or the GnRH analogue, deslorelin, are critical components to accurately time the insemination with frozen semen. Most hCG treated mares ovulate 48h post-treatment (12-72h) while most deslorelin (Ovuplant) treated mares ovulate 36-42h post-treatment. However, mares bred more than once during the breeding cycle appear to have a slight but consistent increase in pregnancy rate compared to mares bred only once pre- or post-ovulation. In addition, the "capacitation-like" changes inflicted on the sperm during the process of freezing and thawing appear to be responsible for the shorter longevity of cryopreserved sperm. Therefore, breeding closer to ovulation should increase the fertility for most stallions with frozen semen. Recent evidence would suggest that breeding close to the uterotubal junction increases the sperm numbers in the oviduct increasing the chances of pregnancy. Post-breeding examinations aid in determining ovulation and uterine fluid accumulations so that post-breeding therapies can be instituted if needed. Average pregnancy rates per cycle of mares bred with frozen semen are between 30 and 40% with a wide range between sires. Stallion and mare status are major factors in determining the success of frozen semen inseminations. Pregnancy rates are lower for barren and old maiden mares as well as those mares treated for uterine infections during the same cycle of the insemination. To maximize fertility with frozen semen, a careful selection of the stallions and mares, with proper client communication is critical. Dedication and commitment of mare owner and inseminator will have the most significant impact on the pregnancy rates.  相似文献

The site of a hypothesized embryo reduction mechanism was studied. The number of normal-sized embryos and undersized embryos (>2 standard deviations below the mean embryo diameter in control mares) was determined at day 7 and 11 post-ovulation in single-ovulating control mares and in multiple-ovulating pituitary extract-treated mares in which all ovulations occurred on a single day. In two additional groups (control and treated), the embryonal enlargement was monitored by rectal palpation until day 49. An average of 0.7 normal-sized embryos per control mare at day 7 and at day 11 and 0.6 vesicles per control mare at day 49 was found. More normal-sized embryos (P<0.05) were recovered per extract-treated mare at day 7 (2.9 embryos/mare) than at day 11 (0.7), and fewer undersized embryos per extract-treated mare (P<0.05) were recovered at day 7 (0.1) than at day 11 (1.1). The total number of embryos (normal-sized plus undersized) per treated mare was greater (P<0.05) at day 7 and at day 11 than the number of palpated vesicles per treated mare at day 49. The number of mares with more than one normal-sized embryo in the day 7 treated group (10/14) was greater (P<0.05) than in the day 11 treated group (1/14) and was greater than the number of mares with more than one palpated vesicle in the day 49 treated group (2/14). Intrauterine reduction was therefore manifested between days 7 and 11 in multiple-ovulating mares, as demonstrated by the number of multiple normal-sized blastocysts recovered at day 7 and by the reduced number of normal-sized and the increased number of undersized blastocysts recovered at day 11.  相似文献

Mounting interactions in mares isolated from stallions and the relationship to stage of the estrous cycle and level of circulating hormones were studied for 3 years in a herd averaging 105 mares. Mares were assigned to mounting, standing, and control groups. A control mare was selected by being within 1 day of the number of days after ovulation in a mounting mare. A total of 15 mounting interactions were detected by chance observation during the 3 years. A blood sample was collected immediately after the mounting interaction from each mare in the three groups, and a transrectal ultrasonographic examination of the reproductive tract was done. Two mounting interactions occurred during the early luteal phase and 13 during the follicular phase. The interactions that occurred during the follicular phase were used for comparisons among groups. The interval between mounting and the next ovulation, diameter of the two largest follicles, and the number of follicles larger and smaller than 20 mm were not different significantly among the mounting, standing, and control groups. Testosterone concentrations were higher (P<0.01) in the mounting group (17.7+/-2.3 pg/ml) than in standing group (10.9+/-0.5 pg/ml), and the difference between the mounting group and the control group (12.8+/-0.6 pg/ml) approached significance (P<0.08). Concentrations of androstenedione, estradiol, estrone, and progesterone did not differ significantly among groups. Results indicated that mounting behavior between mares is rare, usually occurs during the follicular phase, and is related to high circulating concentrations of testosterone.  相似文献

The effects of oxytocin and two prostaglandin (PG) F(2)alpha analogues, prostalene and alfaprostol, on uterine pressure in the mare were measured using balloon-tipped catheters connected to pressure transducers. The PGF(2)alpha analogues caused increased uterine pressure beginning 7 to 15 min postinjection and persisting for the duration of each 60 min recording session. Forty postpartum mares of light-horse breed were used to evaluate the effects of prostalene on postpartum pregnancy rate. Eighteen mares were injected by aseptic technique subcutaneously with 1 mg prostalene twice daily, beginning on the day of foaling (Day 0) and continuing for 10 consecutive days (Day 10) or until the mare was first bred at foal heat. Twenty-two postpartum mares were injected with 1.0 ml sterile saline by the same technique as the controls. Of treated mares, 76.9% were diagnosed pregnant after breeding versus 44.4% of the control mares (P = 0.07). Of treated mares, 66.7% bred at their second postpartum estrus became pregnant versus 28.6% of control mares (P = 0.03). Prostalene, given at 1 mg twice daily for 10 d postpartum, produced an increased pregnancy rate after both foal heat and second postpartum estrus breedings in the mare.  相似文献

Equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is a pathogen causing rhinopneumonia in young horses, abortion in mares, and myeloencephalitis in adult horses. Two types, EHV-1 P and EHV-1 B, have recently been dominant among 16 electropherotypes. EHV-1 P and EHV-1 B viruses were compared by long and accurate polymerase chain reaction (LA-PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Differences in restriction sites were found to be focused in ORF64, which encodes the infected cell protein 4 (ICP4), and downstream of the ICP4 gene. The 3 ' -end and downstream of ICP4 gene of EHV-1 B were found to be replaced by the corresponding region of EHV-4, indicating that EHV-1 B is a naturally occurring recombinant virus between progenitors of EHV-1 P and EHV-4. This is the first report showing a natural interspecies recombinant in alphaherpesviruses.  相似文献

Pony mares (n=480) and 16 stallions were assigned to four herds of 60 mares and one stallion (large herds) and to 12 herds of 20 mares and one stallion (small herds). The stallions remained with the herds continuously for all of the large herds and seven of the small herds. In the five remaining small herds the stallion was put into a herd for three hours every two days for 12 observation periods. Pregnancy rates and day of ovulation were estimated by size of embryonal enlargements. Mean pregnancy rates of 51% and 54% were obtained in the small herds and 42% in the large herds during a 48-day period (equivalent to two estrous cycles). Pregnancy rates for herds with the stallion present continuously were higher (P<0.01) for the small herds than for the large herds for days 1-24 (42% versus 19%). There was no effect of herd size on number of mares becoming pregnant per herd on days 1-24, but more mares (P<0.01) became pregnant during days 25-48 in the large herds (13.2 mares per herd versus 1.8). In the herds in which the stallion was present intermittently, the number of times that the stallion rebred the same mare when more than one mare was in estrus was greater (P<0.01) than what would be expected to occur by chance (observed, 21%; expected, 11%). Repeated breeding of the same mare seemed related to the availability or activity of the mare, since such mares more frequently followed and positioned themselves in the vicinity of the stallion. Most of the interferences by a mare which involved keeping the stallion and another mare apart were directed at the mare, whereas most of the interferences during mounting were directed at the stallion (P<0.01). Mares were more likely (P<0.01) to interfere when in estrus than when in nonestrus. When interfering mares were in nonestrus, their hostility was usually directed at the stallion (92%), whereas when in estrus their interference was more frequently directed at a mare (73%, P<0.01).  相似文献

Follicular diameter is used as a guiding tool to predict ovulation in the mare. However, the great range in preovulatory follicular diameter makes prediction of optimal breeding time based on follicular diameter unreliable. Uterine edema pattern is also useful to determine the best time to breed, since intensity of edema tends to dissipate as ovulation approaches, however, not every mare follows this pattern. The aims of this study were to assess the repeatability of preovulatory follicular diameter and uterine edema pattern in two consecutive spontaneous cycles and to determine how induction treatments (hCG, PGF(2)alpha and GnRH analogues) influence them. Fifty-three mares were followed during two consecutive cycles and scanned three times a day from 2 to 3 days before ovulation. During the first cycle, mares had a spontaneous ovulation and in the consecutive cycle mares received either: (a) no hormonal treatment; (b) 1500 IU hCG; (c) 125-250 microg Cloprostenol or (d) 2.1 mg Deslorelin implant. Mares ovulated consistently from similar follicular diameters in two consecutive spontaneous cycles (r=0.89; P<0.000). All three induction treatments had a significant effect on reducing the preovulatory follicular diameter (P<0.005). Mares showed fair correlation in uterine edema patterns in both consecutive non-induced cycles (r=0.71; P<0.005). In conclusion mares in consecutive cycles ovulated from consistent follicular diameters. Follicular diameters recorded from previous ovulations can be relied on to predict the optimal breeding time in successive cycles especially in mares that ovulate from unusually small follicles.  相似文献

A survey of the fertility of Icelandic stallions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Very limited information is available on the breeding performance of Icelandic stallions, let alone the effect that management practices may have had on such performance. As an extensively kept, largely genetically isolated breed of horse it provides a good model for the study of factors that affect reproductive performance without the additional complication of selective breeding, infectious infertility and breed effect. A survey was conducted using 27 Icelandic stallions covering 1590 mares within the normal Icelandic breeding system (May to September). During the season, stallions cover mares within three periods of time, each period being of a similar length (average 35.5 days). During period 1, mares are covered in hand and at pasture. During periods 2 and 3, all mares are covered at pasture. The overall fertility rate for Icelandic stallions was calculated. The effect of a range of variables on fertility was investigated statistically using a number of models in an attempt to minimise the effect of confounding factors. An overall adjusted fertility rate for Icelandic stallions of 67.7% was obtained. The following factors were shown to have a significant effect on fertility: age of mare (P<0.001), training level of stallion (P<0.05) and method of breeding (P<0.05). For some individual stallions reproductive status of the mare also had a significant (P<0.001) effect. Many of these factors have been observed to effect FR in other more intensively managed equine populations. However, the less dramatic detrimental effect of age and the lack of a significant effect of mare reproductive status in most stallions suggests that infertility problems are less evident in Icelandic mares, possibly due to less emphasis on selection for athletic performance and the accepted culling of subfertile stock.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of intravaginal progesterone on the reproductive performance of transitional Thoroughbred mares on commercial stud farms. Two hundred twenty-seven (227) non-lactating transitional Thoroughbred mares aged between 4 and 18 y (mean 9.4 ± 3.2 y) located on three stud farms in the Waikato region of New Zealand were used in the study performed during four consecutive breeding seasons (2007-10). Mares were age-matched in pairs and either treated with an intravaginal progesterone releasing device (Cue-Mare, 1.72 g progesterone, 10% w/w) for up to 10 d (Treated; n = 126) or left untreated (Control; n = 101). In both groups, 1,667 iu of hCG was given IV when an ovarian follicle ≥35 mm was detected (in conjunction with estrous behavior) and each mare was bred by natural service. Treated mares were served earlier in the breeding season (mean ± SD interval to first service was 13.9 ± 3.0 vs 26.7 ± 13.2 d for Treated and Control groups, respectively; P < 0.001). In the Treated and Control groups, 95.2 and 42.6% of mares were served within the first 21 d of the season (P < 0.001). Treated mares conceived earlier in the breeding season (mean number of days to conception 37.5 ± 14.2 vs 50.8 ± 21.3 d, P = 0.01). There was no difference between groups in the first service pregnancy rates (53.9 and 50.5% for Treated and Control mares, P = 0.89). Treatment with an intravaginal device increased the number of mares conceiving by the end of the breeding season (91.3 vs 82.3% for Treated and Control groups, P = 0.04). Therefore, this treatment protocol appeared to offer a convenient, economical and reliable method for managing transitional mares on commercial Thoroughbred stud farms.  相似文献

Among female livestock, the mare has the shortest interval from parturition to first ovulation. Due to the scarcity of research on postpartum mares, little progress has been made on the characterization of the resumption of ovarian cyclicity after parturition. This study compared follicular and gonadotropin dynamics during follicle emergence and deviation in postpartum lactating (PP Lactating) versus non-postpartum cycling (N-PP Cycling) mares. On the day of parturition, every PP Lactating mare was paired with a N-PP Cycling mare. Comparisons were made by considering the partum-ovulation interval and the postpartum interovulatory interval for the PP Lactating mares, and two interovulatory intervals for the N-PP Cycling mares. The results presented herein demonstrate that during the postpartum period, lactating mares have some similarities in follicular and hormonal profiles around emergence and deviation when compared with non-postpartum cycling mares. However, some peculiar and important characteristics were noticed during the postpartum period in lactating mares: (1) The emergence of the DF occurs around the day of parturition; (2) follicle deviation in the ovulatory wave occurs earlier during the foal heat than in other intervals; (3) lower FSH and LH systemic concentrations were not detrimental enough to prevent the rapid resumption of ovarian activity just after parturition; and (4) the association between parturition and season can have an additional and confounding effect during postpartum ovarian activity in mares. The novel findings of this study provide better knowledge of the resumption of ovarian activity after parturition and may help provide insight into the reproductive management of this species.  相似文献

Twelve mares were vaccinated with attenuated equine abortion virus (EAV) strain RAC-H. Two nonvaccinated mares served as controls. In at least three mares the vaccination appeared to coincide with a natural infection. This was indicated by characterization of the EAV isolated from nasal secretions of six vaccinated mares, a nonvaccinated control, and also from the lung, spleen, and liver of a fetus aborted by a vaccinated mare. The relative sensitivity of the isolated EAV to dithiothreitol was used to distinguish the RAC-H strain and wild-type virus. Of the 10 EAV isolates, four were recognized as being the vaccine strain while six were recognized as being wild-type strains. Three of the latter originated from two vaccinated mares and a nonvaccinated control, and three were recovered from the fetus. The ability of the EAV strains to form plaques in a cloned line of L cells proved to be unsuitable for use as a marker in this study.  相似文献

Quarterhorse mares were used to investigate effects of estradiol-17beta on uterine involution, duration of estrus, interval to ovulation, and fertility achieved by breeding on the first postpartum estrus. On the day of foaling, mares were injected with biodegradable poly (DL-lactide) microspheres containing either 100 mg estradiol-17beta (25 mares) or no drug (27 mares). The treatment period was considered to last for 12 to 15 d. Estrus was determined by teasing mares (n=16) with a stallion. Ovulation was detected by transrectal ultrasonographic examination of ovaries (n=48). On Days 6, 11 and 16 post partum, transrectal ultrasonography was used to measure cross-sectional diameters of the uterine body, uterine horns, and fluid within the uterine lumen (n=28). Uteri were swabbed for bacteriologic culture, and uterine biopsies were obtained from the previously gravid uterine horn on Days 11 and 16 post partum, for assessment of endometritis and morphometric analysis of endometrial histioarchitecture (n=19). Twenty-two mares were bred on foal-heat, and pregnancy was determined by transrectal ultrasonography on 14 to 16 and 30 to 35 d after breeding. With only one exception (diameter of previously gravid uterine horn on Day 11), mean values for all measures of uterine involution did not differ between treatment groups (P > 0.05). No differences were detected between treatment group means for length of estrus or interval to ovulation (P > 0.05). No differences were detected between treatment group liklihoods for recovery of potential bacterial pathogens, presence of endometritis, or presence of intrauterine fluid at 11 or 16 d post partum (P > 0.05). Pregnancy rate of mares treated with estradiol (5 11 ; 45%) was not different from that of control mares (9 11 ; 82%; P > 0.05). Estradiol treatment did not hasten uterine involution, increase duration of estrus, delay ovulation, or increase fertility in these postpartum mares.  相似文献

Two pony mares were administered 150 mg of testosterone propionate every other day for 20 days (ten injections) and every ten days there-after. An additional two mares and one stallion were not treated and served as controls. Testosterone propionate was dissolved in absolute ethanol and administered subcutaneously. Sex behavior tests were conducted 26 and 40 days after the first injection. Control mares exhibited very little male sex behavior. Both testosterone propionatetreated mares, however, exhibited mounting, sniffing, flehmen, biting and vocalization behavior in the presence of an estrous mare. The testosterone propionate-treated mares mounted and bit estrous mares more frequently than the stallion but exhibited less sniffing, flehmen and vocalization behavior in the presence of an estrous mare than the stallion. Testosterone propionate-treated mares and the stallion mounted an estrous mare 23.3 +/- 9.7 seconds and 172.5 +/- 22.5 seconds, respectively, after being introduced into the pen. Mares in estrus were mounted by the testosterone propionate-treated mares and the stallion an average of 4.0 +/- 1.3 and 1.0 +/- 0 times, respectively, during a ten-minute test. None of the non-estrous mares was ever mounted by the testosterone propionate-treated mares. In summary, testosterone propionate induced male sex behavior in intact mares and the testosterone propionate-treated mares effectively detected estrous mares.  相似文献

An instrument has been designed to measure the effective length (l) and angle of declination (a) of the vulva in the mare. The product, la, provides an index (Caslick Index) suitable for determining the necessity for Caslick's operation in mares not exhibiting the classical symptoms associated with pneumovagina. The value l showed a significant increase (P less than 0.05) with increased age in breeding mares. Studies on 9020 mares revealed that all caslicked mares, and mares with a Caslick Index of less than 150, had a significantly higher pregnancy rate than non-caslicked mares of similar age and a Caslick Index greater than 150. Values of 100 and over should be an indication for more careful clinical appraisal of the genital tract in those mares not as yet clinically affected. Nulliparous mares caslicked for racing had a significantly higher pregnancy rate than non-casliked maiden mares in their first year at stud.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a contraceptive method for feral horses. The feral horse population has increased significantly in recent years despite attempts to control numbers. As in most wild animal population control programs, contraceptive methods must be easy to apply, cause minimal disruption to the social structure and be fully reversible. In the present study, we tested the effectiveness of an intrauterine device (IUD) for fertility control in mares. Six mares were fitted with a silastic O-ring-shaped IUD on July 1 of Year 1. The IUD-treated mares were turned out with 12 nontreated mares and a fertile stallion in a large pasture until October 20 (112 d). None of the IUD-treated mares and all the nontreated mares became pregnant. The IUD-treated mares were maintained separately from the stallion during the winter. Following removal of the IUD on April 27 of Year 2, the mares were again introduced to the pasture with the stallion together with 6 nontreated mares. For the 6 mares previously treated with an IUD, the mean interval from introduction to the stallion to conception was 17.5 +/- 5 d or 1.3 cycles per pregnancy, and all mares produced a normal foal at term. Subsequently, 19 recorded mare breeding seasons resulted in 18 foals. Uterine cytology and histopathology indicate that the IUD causes mild chronic endometritis without permanent changes in the endometrium. We conclude that based on our observations, the O-ring-shaped IUD is an effective, safe and practical contraceptive method for mares.  相似文献

Delayed uterine involution is a major cause of early reproductive failure in mares. Involution is affected by mare age, and foaling to covering interval. Involution rates vary between the previously non-gravid horn (PNGH), which recovers the quicker, and the previously gravid horn (PGH). Location of a pregnancy and its likely success may, therefore, be affected by its location relative to the previous pregnancy. This study aimed to determine: (i) the location of concepti in consecutive pregnancies; (ii) whether this varies with mare age or foaling to conception interval; (iii) whether location in relation to the previous pregnancy affects success. 1383 Thoroughbred mares were monitored by ultrasonic scanning during oestrus and early pregnancy. Significantly (p < 0.01) more pregnancies were located in the PNGH (79.2%) than the PGH (20.8%). The number of pregnancies in PGH significantly increased with mare age (p < 0.01) and foaling to conception interval (p < 0.05). Significantly (p < 0.001) more pregnancies located in the PGH (16.5%) failed, than those in the PNGH (4.6%). It can be concluded that most pregnancies locate in the PNGH where their chances of success are greatest. The larger number of pregnancies locating in the PGH in older mares and those with shorter foaling to conception intervals may in part account for the higher conceptus mortality rates in such mares. Hence breeding older mares on alternate years and maximising foaling to conception interval may improve reproductive success. Alternatively termination of pregnancies located in the PGH followed by timely recovering may be justifiable as might ET in older mares covered close to foaling.  相似文献

Jugular blood samples were obtained from 8 mares at 5- and/or 20-min intervals for 2 to 5 days during various phases of the oestrous cycle for plasma LH determination. An episodic release pattern was observed in 1 of 3 mares sampled during the ovulatory period. One mare had one secretory burst and the other mare had several periods of fluctuating plasma LH concentration. During dioestrus, episodic secretions were observed in 2 mares sampled 11 to 13 days before and, in 1 mare, 9 days after ovulation. During the 2 to 5-day period before ovulation, episodic secretion was not observed (3 mares) but plasma LH concentrations fluctuated as much as 6 ng/ml during a period of 3--4 h. Daily plasma samples were obtained form 10 mares (1--8 oestrous cycles/mare) during which 22 single, 18 double and 2 luteal-phase ovulations occurred. Dioestrous ovulations were accompanied by small increases in plasma LH (1--4 ng/ml), but many similar increases in LH were not accompanied by ovulation. No significant differences in secretory patterns were observed between single and multiple ovulations. In one mare, 4 ovulations occurred in the presence of a prolonged luteal phase; 3 were accompanied by increasing LH concentrations and the other occurred when LH was at a low concentration.  相似文献
