Conidial germination and appressorium formation of Erysiphe polygoni on living and non-living substrata have been studied. Among living hosts, peelings from bulbs and leaves of Allium sativum and Allium cepa, or from stems of Azadirachta indica and rhizomes of Curcuma longa supported good germination. Zingiber officinale rhizome peelings inhibited germination. Germination and appressorium formation were maximum on the host (Pisum sativum) as compared to some other leguminous hosts. Little morphological variation was noticed among appressoria developed on various substrata, although they differed in size. Conidial germination was enhanced in leaf extract of pea.  相似文献

The inhibitory activity of aqueous extracts of field-grown sorghum (Sorghum bicolor cv. Bird-a-boo) herbage and roots was quantitatively indexed by three aspects of cumulative cress (Lepidium sativum cv. Curlycress) seed germination: the germination onset; weighted mean rate; and final germination percentage. Extract potency was greatest for herbage collected four weeks after planting but declined sharply thereafter as the plants matured. About 91% of the inhibitory activity obtained from four-week-old herbage was in a low molecular weight fraction. Differential effects of herbage and root extracts on cress seed germination suggest that the nature and/or proportion of biologically active substances extractable from these plant parts is dissimilar.  相似文献

Antipathogenic potential of 38 plants was evaluated in the form of aqueous extracts against Peronoclerospora sorghi, causing downy mildew of sorghum. Conidial suspension and plant extracts were mixed individually and allowed to stand for 5 min and then used to inoculate the host by sprout-dip method. The sprouts thus inoculated were grown in pots, and the disease incidence was observed. Eight plant extracts (Cicer areatinum, Datura metel, Croton sparsiflorus, Parthenium hysterophorus, Nerium oleander, Chromolaena odorata, Duranta repens and Oxalis latifolia) at 20% concentration performed at par with chemical fungicide (Mancozeb 75%) by exhibiting total suppression of disease incidence to 0%, when compared with 64.1% of negative control. Organic management of air-borne inoculum of downy mildew of sorghum is feasible and preferable when compared with chemical control methods, considering human and environmental health concerns. The use of water extract keeps the technology simple so that it can be directly prepared and used by the farmers. Short-listing of eight most effective water extracts would help in self-reliance of farmers, reducing their dependence on commercial products.  相似文献

Different mulberry genotypes show great variation in their resistance to the powdery mildew Phyllactinia corylea. Conidial germination and hyphal growth of P. corylea on the leaf surface of two susceptible mulberry genotypes, viz., Kanva 2 (K2) and Victory 1 (V1) varieties of Morus indica, and on two resistant species, viz., M. laevigata and M. serrata were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Conidial germination and growth of germ tubes were normal on all the leaves. The hyphae of P. coryleaidentify stomata on host leaves by their topographical features to produce the stomatopodia precisely over them. The holes and/or the grooves of stomata appear to provide the signals for the initiation of stomatopodia and similar structures are erratically developed over many local depressions or grooves on leaf surface. The abaxial surface of K2 leaf is smooth without prominent undulations of epidermal cell surface, and the stomata are flush with the leaf surface. Although successful penetration is also achieved on V1 leaf, its slightly undulated surface occasionally provides inaccurate tropic signals to the hyphae, inducing the development of stomatopodia away from the stomata. The leaf surfaces of M. laevigata and M. serrata are very rough with highly sculptured cuticle and abundant epidermal outgrowths. Stomata mostly remain sunken or hidden amidst the cuticular ornamentations and the hyphae fail to recognise the precise signals from them. As the surface architecture of the leaves provides many immense sources of tropic signals, stomatopodia are often produced over local depressions or grooves. In these cases the fungus fails to penetrate the leaf, does not develop beyond 24 h and penetration is rarely achieved on the leaves of the resistant plants. The study indicates that the stimulatory effect of the leaf surface topography of resistant varieties misleads the pathogen from successful penetration, thus contributing to the plant's resistance. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of plant extracts on soluble sugar, soluble phenol and defence-related enzymes response against Alternaria blight in mustard crop. The efficacy of six selected plant extracts (5 and 10%) used as foliar sprays at 60 and 70 days after sowing and mustard leaves was used for investigation. The results indicate that soluble phenol and sugar content in mustard leaves significantly increases in response to spraying of Azadirachta indica seed kernel, Calotropis procera and A. indica leaf extracts. The soluble protein, viz. peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase content, was higher in mustard leaves sprayed with C. procera leaves extract, A. indica seed kernel and Allium sativum bulb extract.  相似文献

Aglaia odorata Lour . (Meliaceae) was found to have very strong allelopathic activity and a bioherbicide PORGANIC? was developed from its leaf extracts. However, the phytotoxic substances causing the strong allelopathic activity of the plants have not yet been determined. Therefore, we investigated allelopathic properties and phytotoxic substances in A. odorata. Aqueous EtOH extracts of A. odorata leaves inhibited root and shoot growth of garden cress (Lepidum sativum), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), timothy (Phleum pratense), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), and Echinochloa crus‐galli with the extract concentration‐dependent manner. The extracts were then purified and a major phytotoxic substance with allelopathic activity was isolated and identified by spectral data as rocaglaol. Rocaglaol inhibited the growth of garden cress and E. crus‐galli at concentrations > 0.3 and 0.03 μm , respectively. The concentrations required for 50% inhibition ranged from 0.09 to 2.5 μm . The inhibitory activity of rocaglaol on the weed species, E. crus‐galli, was much greater than that of abscisic acid. These results suggest that rocaglaol may be a major contributor to the allelopathic effect of A. odorata and bioherbicide PORGANIC?.  相似文献

Aqueous extracts of 39 plants selected from local flora were evaluated for antifungal potential against Alternaria solani, causing early blight of tomato, at 4% concentration in Potato Dextrose Agar by poison food technique. Out of these, 13 plant extracts significantly reduced the mycelial growth of the pathogen, according to ANOVA, Tukey’s post-test. Inhibition rate of above 20% was shown by seven plant extracts namely Crotalaria trichotoma (36.6%), Citrus aurantifolia (27.3%), Azadirachta indica (23.7%), Polyalthia longifolia (23.3%), Datura metel (21.3%), Muntingia calabura (20.09%) and Oxalis latifolia (20.09%). At 2% concentration, six extracts showed significant growth inhibition namely, C. trichotoma (16.6%), A. indica (10%), Capsicum annum (7.1%), D. metel (6.6%), P. longifolia (6.3%) and C. aurantifolia (5.5%). The plant extracts shortlisted for pathogen inhibition have potential to be developed as potent fungicides in organic farming.  相似文献

Previous study showed that exogenously applied recombinant thymosin from Bombyx mori (BmTHY) reduces B. mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) proliferation in silkworm. Which stands to reason that BmTHY in B. mori is crucial for the defense against BmNPV. However, little is known about the effect of endogenously overexpressed or repressed BmTHY on B. mori resistance to virus infection. To study this issue, we constructed an overexpression and inhibited expression systems of BmTHY in BmN cells. The viral titer and the analysis from the quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed that overexpression of BmTHY decreased the copies of BmNPV gene gp41, which goes over to inhibit the proliferation of BmNPV in BmN cells, while the inhibited expression of BmTHY significantly enhanced viral proliferation in infected BmN cells. These results indicated that endogenous BmTHY can inhibit BmNPV proliferation and replication in infected BmN cells. Furthermore, Co‐IP showed that BmTHY could bind to actin in BmN cells. Also, the overexpression or inhibited expression of BmTHY shifted the ratio of F/G‐actin in infected BmN cells. Lastly, the BmTHY, an actin‐interacting protein, might be one of the key host factors against BmNPV, which inhibits viral proliferation and replication in BmN cells.  相似文献

Preliminary investigations with ethanolic (EtOH) extracts from five Nigerian plants show that extracts of Piper guineense Schum and Thonn (Piperaceae), Cedrela odorata L. (Meliaceae), Dennettia tripetala G. Baker (Annonaceae) and Aframomum melegueta (Rosch) K. Schum (Zingiberaceae) in artificial diets significantly reduced larval growth of European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner, at a concentration of 1000 ppm (0.1%). An extract of Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A. Rich (Annonaceae) was ineffective. When the extracts were subsequently incorporated into artificial diets at 300 ppm and offered to neaonates, larval mortality increased in the order A. melegueta (13%), D. tripetala (13%), P. guineense (27%), and C. odorata (48%). Larval and adult emergence periods increased with increasing concentration of P. guineense, C. odorata and D. tripetala indicating a toxic response. Nutritional indices for habituated third instar larvae with the two most promising plant extracts, P. guineense and C. odorata, showed that the efficiencies of conversion of digested food (ECD) was significantly reduced at 300 ppm suggesting a postdigestive toxicity of the extracts. P. guineense and C. odorata extracts show the best potential for development as botanical insecticides.  相似文献

In vitro growth of Myrothecium roridum, a pathogen of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.), on media supplemented with eight cell wall-related monosaccharides revealed that germination and germ tube elongation were enhanced in the presence of arabinose, galactose and glucose. Colony expansion of established mycelia of M. roridum was also enhanced by arabinose and glucose but inhibited by galactose, Non-cellulosic neutral sugar analysis of fruit cell walls from muskmelon cultivars resistant or susceptible to M. roridum revealed that susceptible cultivars had consistently higher arabinosyl, galactosyl and glucosyl residue content than resistant cultivars, while a net loss of galaciosyl and arabinosyl residues occurred in cell walls of fruits between 20- and 27-days post-anthesis. M. roridum germinated more rapidly on isolated fruit cell walls from susceptible than resistant cultivars, but no correlation was found between cultivar resistance to M. roridum and inhibitin of fungal colony expansion on cell walls. Although factors affecting spore germination and mycelial growth of M. roridum, in vitro and in vivo, may differ, any factor that increases cell wall polysaccharide hydrolysis may contribute to ability of M. roridum to become established in immature fruit of muskmelon.  相似文献

The silverleaf whitefly is one of the most important pests found commonly in Iran and in the world. The development of alternative methods instead of chemical applications is necessary in pest management for human health and environment protection. The objective of this research was to assess the effects of extracts of two medicinal plant species: Calotropis procera and Allium sativum, and a formulation containing azadirachtin on fecundity and fertility of the silverleaf whitefly, grown on greenhouse tomato plants. The effects were compared to that of pymetrozine, a synthetic insecticide. According to the results, there was a significant difference among treatments for all reproductive parameters. Gross fecundity rates for pesticides control, herbal extract control, C. procera extract, A. sativum extract, azadirachtin and pymetrozine were 184.75, 146.72, 80.11, 82.18, 63.06 and 55.96 eggs, respectively. These herbal extracts were effective against this pest and they can be the suitable choices for replacing these chemical insecticides.  相似文献

Brown leaf rust (BLR) caused by Peridiopsora mori is one of the major foliar diseases of mulberry (Morus sp.) in the subtropical hills of eastern India. The disease appeared in first week of August and continued up to September with maximum severity in second and third week of September. The disease symptoms appeared at atmospheric temperature (27.00–20.07°C), relative humidity (92.14–82.43%), rainfall (11.20 cm) and rainy days (7) of the preceding week. Disease severity (>50 PDI) was observed at temperature (26.29–19.29°C), relative humidity (94.14–80.14%), rainfall (4.12 cm) and number of rainy days (2–3 days). Apparent rate of infection was found high at temperature (27.00–19.83°C), relative humidity (94.67–85.00%), rainfall (4.6 cm) and rainy days (2) of the preceding week. The correlation coefficient between disease severity and average meteorological factors of the preceding 7 days revealed that BLR disease severity showed significant negative correlation with minimum temperature. It was also revealed that contribution of maximum and minimum temperature 42.23% and 35.21%, maximum and minimum relative humidity (RH) 11.23% and 10.69% and rainfall and number of rainy days 0.11% and 0.50%, respectively towards development of BLR disease severity. Multiple regression analysis revealed that average of maximum and minimum temperatures and minimum RH of preceding 7 days were found to maximally influence BLR disease severity.  相似文献

Seeds of pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.), an underinvestigated species, were studied to determine optimal conditions for laboratory germination. Soaking seeds in acid solutions prior to sowing increased rates of germination. Concentrated (conc) H2SO4 was more effective than conc NO3 or conc HCl acids. Physiological evidence from seed germination studies suggests that autotoxicity, or intraspecific inhibition, exists in pokeweed, a species known to possess several biologically active compounds. Seed germination was investigated in the laboratory with aqueous extracts of vegetative and reproductive structures of the plant. The presence of extracts from most plant parts correlated with reduced or no germination by seeds of its own species, whereas the presence of distilled water correlated with high percentages of germination by control seeds. Whether diluted with water by 5-fold (20% v/v) or undiluted, juice of pokeweed fruits completely inhibited the laboratory germination of pokeweed seeds. Also, extracts of freshly harvested mature leaves, stems, and immature fruits inhibited seed germination. However, results with root extracts, obtained from a single individual, depended more on concentration, since the highest concentration (50% v/v) inhibited germination, and lower concentrations (10 and 20% v/v) increased germination percentages over control samples. Results with extracts of juvenile leaves correlated with neither inhibition nor promotion of germination. Thus, except for juvenile leaves and the root, most extracts of the pokeweed plant inhibited seed germination with more mature structures exerting more inhibition and less mature structures exerting less or no inhibition. The ecological implication of autotoxicity is that seeds are more dispersed through time and space. In regard to seed germination by other species, especially those taxa known to possess biologically active compounds, these and other results suggest that the phenomenon of autotoxicity might be more widespread than previously suspected.  相似文献

A 9-month laboratory study was carried out to determine the impact of herbivory by a moth with shoot-boring larvae, Dichrorampha odorata Brown and Zachariades (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) on growth and reproductive ability of its host plant, Chromolaena odorata (L.) King and Robinson (Asteraceae), a major invasive alien plant species in southern Africa. Newly hatched D. odorata larvae were inoculated onto 0 (control), 50 and 100% of the shoot tips of C. odorata in the laboratory. At all treatment levels, the basal stem diameter of C. odorata was not affected by D. odorata larval feeding. Larval feeding by D. odorata significantly reduced the height of the main shoot and flower production in C. odorata relative to the control treatment but promoted branching by increasing the number of shoot tips. However, the differences in plant height and number of flowers between the 50 and 100% inoculation levels were not statistically significant. Dichrorampha odorata is the first shoot-tip attacking agent that is being released as a biological control agent against C. odorata in South Africa. In general, the impacts of D. odorata on the weed were relatively small even though statistically significant. The findings of this study suggest that high levels of damage by the moth will modestly reduce the height, flower production, and the competitiveness of C. odorata, thereby contributing to the biological control of the weed in South Africa.  相似文献

Novel methods are required to break the seed dormancy of temperate-zone orchids and aid the conservation of rare species. Zeatin is produced in increasing concentrations during the development of pea (Pisum sativum) seeds. We hypothesised that hot water extracts of pea seeds stimulate germination of the orchid Ophrys apifera in vitro, particularly for extractions made during later pea development. Pea seeds, exposed to 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 or 15 days of periodic wetting, were extracted in hot water and the extracts were added to Malmgren's growth medium. Germination of O. apifera on this medium was quantified after 7 months, stimulated by a range of pure hormones. Pea seed extract collected later in pea development (at 6–15 days) inhibited germination of O. apifera. However, extracts taken at 0 and 3 days significantly increased germination from 3.8 ± 0.32% in the control to 9.1 ± 1.84% and 7.6 ± 0.79%, respectively: increases comparable to the most effective of the pure hormones. Dried peas therefore provide an economical alternative source of germination stimulants for orchids. We briefly report how sufficient mature plants of O. apifera were produced to allow a population to be multiplied to 15 times its original size during a habitat restoration project.  相似文献

Pot experiments laid out in a complete randomised design were conducted in the screen house of the Department of Crop Protection, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria to determine the effects of organic fertiliser and Chromolaena odorata residue at 1% w/w on the pathogenicity of Meloidogyne incognita infecting maize. M. incognita significantly reduced the plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area, cob weight and grain yield of maize by 6.89, 15.18, 20, 63.92 and 56.16% respectively. C. odorata residue and organic fertiliser significantly suppressed M. incognita galling, inhibited the nematode fecundity and reduced the number of eggs and juveniles on maize. A remarkable increase in plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area, cob weight and grain yield were observed on maize plants treated with the mixture of C. odorata and organic fertiliser despite the nematode infection. The observation from this study suggests that C. odorata in combination with organic fertiliser is a viable option for the control of M. incognita on maize.  相似文献

Abstract

Grapevine downy mildew is the most devastating disease throughout the world causing huge monetary losses. Twenty medicinal plant extracts and six phylloplane microfloras were evaluated for their efficacy against sporangial germination of grapevine downy mildew pathogen Plasmopara viticola in vitro. The results revealed that the Neem Seed Kernel Extract (NSKE) at 5% significantly inhibited the sporangial germination (75.36%) of P. viticola. Among the phylloplane microflora Pseudomonas fluorescens was highly effective in reducing the sporangial germination (64.26%). Post inoculation spraying of NSKE (5%) and P. fluorescens (0.2%) effectively inhibited the disease development in the greenhouse. Three sprays with NSKE (5%) and phylloplane P. fluorescens (0.2%): first spray after initial appearance of disease and the second and third at 10 day intervals were found to be promising in reducing disease incidence in the field.  相似文献

The silkworm Bombyx mori 30-kDa lipoproteins (6G1 and 19G1), major components of the hemolymph, were shown to bind to glucans. 6G1 apolipoprotein was expressed as a fusion protein with glutathione S-transferase in Escherichia coli and assayed for its binding activity. The purified recombinant 6G1 apolipoprotein specifically bound to β-glucan, but not to chitin, mannan, peptidoglycan, or oligosaccharide chains on glycoproteins. The β-glucan binding of the recombinant 6G1 was inhibited by laminaribiose and laminarin, a soluble glucan, but not by lipopolysaccharide or insect blood sugar, trehalose at physiological concentration. Furthermore, the recombinant 6G1 was shown to participate in the activation of prophenoloxidase cascade and to interfere with hyphal growth of the entomopathogenic fungus Paecilomyces tenuipes, injected into pupae of B. mori. These results suggest that 6G1 lipoprotein plays a role in the protection of B. mori against invading fungi.  相似文献

Abstract

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate the potential of 13 plant extracts for the control of the red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus. Results indicated that the ethanol extracts of sea ambrosia (Ambrosia maritima), French cotton (Calotropis procera) and curcuma (Curcuma longa) have superior toxicity as compared to the extracts of other tested plants, estimated LC 50 were 0.723, 0.978 and 1.092%, respectively. In field experiments, the percentage of recovered date palm trees reached 90.91% within 15 days when A. maritima extract was applied. The injection of C. procera and C. longa extracts into the tunnels of infested trees resulted in 86.36% and 85.00% of tree recovery, respectively.  相似文献
