Summary In order to study the foliar endophytes from teak (Tectona grandis L.) and rain tree (Samanea saman Merr.) growing in the campus of Chulalongkorn University, healthy leaves were collected at two-monthly intervals during January to December. The number of genera and species, together with their colonization frequency (CF%) in mature teak and rain tree leaves were greater than those in the young leaves. More endophytic isolates in the leaves of both trees were recovered during the rainy season. The fungal genera found in both young and mature teak leaves were Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Nigrospora, Phomopsis and mycelia sterilia. Phomopsis was the dominant genus in both young (newly emerged) and mature leaves. Fusarium, Penicillium, Schizophyllum commune and members of the Xylariaceae were found only in mature leaves. For the rain tree leaves, species of Phomopsis and mycelia sterilia were found in both young newly emerged and mature leaves. Colletotrichum and Penicillium were found only in mature leaves, whereas Nigrospora was found only in young newly emerged leaves. In this study, Phomopsis was the dominant genus in the leaves of both tree species. A total of 37 isolates of endophytic fungi isolated from teak and rain tree leaves were tested for the production of antimicrobial activities. Out of these, 18 isolates could produce inhibitory substances effective against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and 3 isolates inhibited growth of Candida albicans in vitro.  相似文献

Endophytic fungi occur on various types of leaf litter, but few studies have been done on their roles as saprophytes in decomposition. This study examined the succession of fungi in live, newly shed, and decomposing leaves at 2 months of decomposition of Camellia japonica and chemical changes in decomposing leaves colonized by endophytes. Coccomyces nipponicum, Lophodermium sp., Geniculosporium sp. 1, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were isolated from living leaves. Coccomyces nipponicum and Lophodermium sp. were also isolated frequently from newly shed and decomposing leaves. These two fungi caused a decrease of lignin content and bleaching in decomposing leaves under field and laboratory conditions. Total hyphal length in decomposing leaves was higher in bleached portions than in surrounding nonbleached portions, which probably reflected the early onset of hyphal growth of endophytes inside leaf tissue at leaf senescence or death. Incubation of newly shed leaves that were sterilized to exclude previously established endophytes resulted in no occurrence of bleached portions in decomposing leaves on the forest floor. This result indicated that these endophytes were incapable of colonizing leaves directly after litterfall and that the persistence of endophytes from live leaves was crucial for their colonization in decomposing leaves.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) represents small, random variation from symmetry and can be used as an indicator of plant susceptibility to herbivory. We investigated the effects of FA of two oak species, Quercus laevis and Q. geminata, and the responses of three herbivore guilds: leaf miners, gallers, and chewers. To examine differences in FA and herbivory between individuals, 40 leaves from each tree were collected, and FA indices were calculated. To examine differences in FA and herbivory within-individuals, we sampled pairs of mined and unmined leaves for asymmetry measurements. Differences in growth of leaf miners between leaf types were determined by tracing 50 mines of each species on symmetric leaves and asymmetric leaves. Asymmetric leaves contained significantly lower concentrations of tannins and higher concentrations of nitrogen than symmetric leaves for both plant species. Both frequency of asymmetric leaves on plants and levels of asymmetry positively influenced the abundance of Brachys, Stilbosis and other leaf miners, but no significant relationship between asymmetry and herbivory was observed for Acrocercops. Brachys and Stilbosis mines were smaller on asymmetric leaves, but differences in mine survivorship between symmetric and asymmetric leaves were observed only for Stilbosis mines. This study indicated that leaf miners might use leaf FA as a cue to plant quality, although differential survivorship among leaf types was not observed for all species studied. Reasons for the different results between guilds are discussed.  相似文献

Phyllosphere bacteria have received little attention despite their important roles in shaping plant performance traits. In this study, we characterize the bacterial communities on leaves of native trees inhabiting sclerophyllous forests in central Chile, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Additionally, we provide profiles of bacterial communities on grape leaves and berries of organic and conventional vineyards. Results of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequence analysis showed that 45% of OTUs were shared across forest leaves, grape leaves, and grape berries. Conventional management had higher number of OTUs shared with forest leaves than organic management. In addition, grape leaves subjected to conventional management had higher alpha diversity than those with organic management, while no significant effect of agricultural management was observed in grape berries. Indicator analysis showed that Bdellovibrio, Beijerinckia, and Spirosoma were typical for forest leaves, whereas Enhydrobacter, Delftia, Proteiniclasticum, Arsenicicoccus, and Alkaliphilus were typical for the vineyard phyllosphere. Regarding agricultural managements, Beijerinckia, Sedimentibacter, Nesterenkonia, Gluconobacter, Conexibacter, and Anaeromyxobacter were typical for conventional grape leaves, whereas no genus‐level indicator was found for organic vineyard leaves. These results provide new insights of the diversity patterns of the phyllosphere microbiome in native and cultivated lands and suggest that both of these microbiomes are connected and integrated systems.  相似文献

Leaf developmental patterns were characterized for three tropical tree species with delayed greening. Changes in the pigment contents, photosynthetic capacity, stomata development, photosystem 2 efficiency, rate of energy dissipation, and the activity of partial protective enzymes were followed in developing leaves in an attempt to elucidate the relative importance of various photoprotective mechanisms during leaf ontogeny. Big leaves of Anthocephalus chinensis, a fast-growing light demanding species, expanded following an exponential pattern, while relatively small leaves of two shade-tolerant species Litsea pierrei and Litsea dilleniifolia followed a sigmoidal pattern. The juvenile leaves of A. chinensis and L. pierrei contained anthocyanin located below the upper epidermis, while L. dilleniifolia did not contain anthocyanin. Leaves of A. chinensis required about 12 d for full leaf expansion (FLE) and photosynthetic development was delayed 4 d, while L. pierrei and L. dilleniifolia required 18 or 25 d for FLE and photosynthetic development was delayed 10 or 15 d, respectively. During the leaf development the increase in maximum net photosynthetic rate was significantly related to changes in stomatal conductance and the leaf maturation period was positively related to the steady-state leaf dry mass per area for the three studied species. Dark respiration rate of leaves at developing stages was greater, and pre-dawn initial photochemical efficiency was lower than that of mature leaves. Young leaves displayed greater energy dissipation than mature leaves, but nevertheless, the diurnal photoinhibition of young L. dilleniifolia leaves was higher than that of mature leaves. The young red leaves of A. chinensis and L. pierrei with high anthocyanin contents and similar diurnal photoinhibition contained more protective enzymes (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase) than mature leaves. Herbivorous insects are expected to adapt to the defensive traits of local host plants. Using two closely related plants, we showed that herbivorous insects of the same species vary their adaptations according to the different traits of each of their local host plants. The leaves of the cruciferous plant Arabis flagellosa are tougher and more difficult to digest for larvae of the butterfly Pieris napi than are A. gemmifera leaves. When given A. flagellosa leaves, hatchlings from A. flagellosa fed on and ingested the leaves faster than those from A. gemmifera. Although the C/N ratios of both Arabis plants were very similar, A. gemmifera leaves were of lower intrinsic quality for larval development and were more difficult to convert to biomass than were A. flagellosa leaves. However, when A. gemmifera leaves were given, P. napi larvae originating from A. gemmifera had higher survival rates and shorter development times than did larvae originating from A. flagellosa. In addition, larvae from A. gemmifera were better able to convert leaves than were larvae from A. flagellosa. These results suggest that A. flagellosa leaves are more physically but less physiologically defended, whereas the reverse is true of A. gemmifera, and suggest that P. napi larvae adapt to the defensive traits of local host plants.  相似文献

The attraction of the predatory mites, Typhlodromalus manihoti and Typhlodromalus aripo, to the host plant-spider mite complex, Manihot esculentaMononychellus tanajoa, was investigated with a Y-tube olfactometer. Factors examined included predator starvation period, several combinations of cassava leaf biomass and initial M. tanajoa infestations, M. tanajoa-damaged leaves with mites and/or their residues removed, M. tanajoa alone, and mechanically damaged cassava leaves. We found that females of T. manihoti and T. aripo were significantly attracted to M. tanajoa-infested cassava leaves when the predators were starved for 2, 6, or 10 h. Satiated T. aripo was significantly attracted to infested cassava leaves whereas satiated T. manihoti did not discriminate between infested and non-infested leaves. When a choice was given between either two or four leaves infested with 200 female M. tanajoa and an equivalent number of non-infested leaves, 2 h-starved T. manihoti and T. aripo were significantly attracted to each of the infested groups of cassava leaves. At a density of 12 female M. tanajoa per leaf on four leaves, 2 h-starved T. manihoti was still attracted to M. tanajoa-infested leaves whereas 2 h-starved T. aripo was not attracted. When a choice was given between non-infested cassava leaves and either infested leaves from which only M. tanajoa females had been removed, or infested leaves from which all M. tanajoa and their visible products (web, feces) had been wiped off, T. aripo preferred odors from both types of previously infested leaves. Typhlodromalus manihoti was only attracted to infested leaves from which the M. tanajoa females only had been removed. Finally, the two predators were not attracted to 400 female M. tanajoa on clean cotton wool or to mechanically wounded leaves. This supports the hypothesis that M. tanajoa damage induces volatile cues in cassava leaves that attract T. manihoti and T. aripo to M. tanajoa-infested leaves.  相似文献

The behavioural response of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to volatiles from several host plants of its prey, spider mites in the genus Tetranychus, was investigated in a Y-tube olfactometer. A positive response to volatiles from tomato leaves and Lima bean leaves was recorded, whereas no response was observed to volatiles from cucumber leaves, or leaves of Solanum luteum and Solanum dulcamara.Different results were obtained for predators that differed in rearing history. Predators that were reared on spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) on Lima bean leaves did respond to volatiles from Lima bean leaves, while predators that had been reared on the same spider mite species but with cucumber as host plant did not respond to Lima bean leaf volatiles. This effect is compared with the effect of rearing history on the response of P. persimilis to volatile allelochemicals of prey-infested plant leaves.  相似文献

Summary The effects of leaf quality on caterpillar performance are frequently investigated, as are the feeding preferences of caterpillars, but rarely are the two considered together to see how preferences match performance. I looked at the preferences and performance of the specialist feeder Achlya flavicornis and the generalist Spilosoma luteum on Betula pendula leaves which were artificially damaged, mined or left undamaged, and on leaves of different ages. Often feeding preferences were not for the leaf types that gave faster development, larger pupae or greater survival. A. flavicornis preferred medium aged to older leaves though medium aged leaves produced smaller pupae. They did not discriminate between young and medium aged leaves, though larvae fed young leaves developed more slowly, and had lower survival and lower adult emergence. S. luteum larvae did not discriminate between damaged and undamaged leaves, though feeding on damaged leaves gave smaller pupae and lower adult emergence. I suggest that generalists like S. luteum might be unable to make feeding choices between leaves that are on the same tree and vary only slightly because populations are exposed to much greater variation across the wide range of potential food plants individuals may encounter. Possible differences in within-plant feeding selectivity between generalists and specialists should be investigated. A. flavicornis is a leaftier for which selection of a suitable leaf for tying could be more important in the first instance than feeding considerations. Larvae preferred younger to older leaves for tying, and larvae tended to feed on the tied leaves, so tying preferences explain the initial feeding preferences.  相似文献

Summary Low levels of artificial damage were imposed on the leaves of Betla pubescens and B. pendula in early summer 1985. Sixteen tress were used and the damage was distributed throughout the canopy in two ways. It was either randomly dispersed on the tree, or restricted to a localised region of the canopy. Up to 250 leaves/tree were damaged and the position of control leaves was marked as appropriate. At the end of the summer the experimental and control leaves were collected for analysis. Subsequent patterns of grazing by naturally-occurring herbivores were affected by the previous damage to the foliage. Fewer artificially-damaged leaves received subsequent insect grazing damage. The frequecy distribution of insect damage to previously-damaged leaves was significantly different from that of the control leaves, and less leaf tissue was removed from those experimental leaves which did receive subsequent insect attack. The evidence presented suggests that wound-induced changes in leaf palatability do occur in B. pubescens and B. pendula in the field and that a major role is to disperse the damage throughout the canopy.  相似文献

Ten essential oils from seven Azorean plant species were evaluated for their insecticidal, ovicidal, feeding‐deterrence and growth inhibition activities against Pseudaletia unipuncta. The oils of Laurus azorica (leaves), and Juniperus brevifolia (leaves) showed strong moderate insecticidal effect on fourth‐instar larvae causing 93.3% and 46.7% mortality, respectively. Juniperus brevifolia (leaves), L. azorica (leaves), Persea indica (leaves), Hedychium gardnerianum (leaves) and Pittosporum undulatum (fruits and leaves) significantly affected the hatching of P. unipuncta eggs (<8% eclosions). Five oils showed significant feeding deterrent activities (L. azorica, 92.4%, J. brevifolia, 93.6%, P. undulatum leaves, 95.5% and fruits, 83.8% and H. gardnerianum, 88.2%). All of the essential oils tested, significantly inhibited the larval growth after 5 days of feeding on the treated diet. Essential oils from L. azorica and J. brevifolia were the most potent growth inhibitors among the oils tested, producing a decrease in the initial larva weight (?14.8 and ?14.5 mg, respectively). Our results indicate that L. azorica (leaves), J. brevifolia (leaves), P. indica (leaves), H. gardnerianum (leaves), and P. undulatum (leaves and fruits) can be exploited for the development of bioactive compounds as a new source of agrochemicals. Further emphasis on isolation and identification of active constituents can be useful to develop new environment‐friendly insect control agents.  相似文献

Aims: In a research programme for managing diseases caused by Botryis cinerea, four isolates of the antagonistic fungus Clonostachys rosea (Cr) were obtained from different ecosystems in Brazil. We studied ecological requirements for the colonization of strawberry leaves by these isolates. Methods and Results: Temperature effects on both mycelial growth in vitro and leaf colonization by Cr were studied. At 10°C, growth on potato dextrose agar and colonization of leaf discs were poor. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth and leaf colonization was around 25°C. The isolates were applied to leaves which were exposed to 0–48 h intervals of moisture. They were also applied to leaves which remained from 0 to 36 h without wetness. All isolates efficiently colonized leaves, regardless of moisture interval or the delay to begin wetness. Although all isolates survived in green leaves of whole plants, colonization decreased throughout a 49‐day period. Conclusions: Brazilian isolates of Cr can establish and colonize strawberry leaves under a wide range of temperature and moisture conditions. Significance and Impact of the Study: It is expected that the Brazilian isolates of Cr will establish efficiently in strawberry leaves where they can compete with B. cinerea.  相似文献

红树林叶片感染真菌后可能会向非健康状态变化,为了比较三种红树林植物海漆、秋茄和桐花树健康与非健康叶片真菌类群,明确其中真菌类群的差异,该研究从广西茅尾海红树林自然保护区采集海漆、秋茄和桐花树健康与非健康叶片,对叶片中真菌分离纯化并进行形态学鉴定,提取真菌的DNA,采用RAPD多样性、ITS序列对真菌进行分子鉴定。经过初步分析,从海漆、秋茄和桐花树中共分离到157株真菌,经过形态学和RAPD分析,可能为19种不同的真菌。采用真菌ITS序列对19种真菌代表性菌株进行分析,结果表明:19种真菌都属于子囊菌门,有15株与已有的真菌ITS序列相似性在97%以上;有4株相似性低于95%,可能为新种。海漆健康和非健康叶片分别分离到真菌7种和5种,健康叶片含了非健康叶片中所有真菌;秋茄健康和非健康叶片分离到真菌1种和9种,且健康叶片中分离到的内生真菌Dothiorella aegiceri也包含于非健康叶片分离的真菌中;桐花树健康和非健康叶片分离到真菌1种和3种,且桐花树分离的内生真菌也是Dothiorella aegiceri,其包含于非健康叶片中分离到的真菌。该研究证明,海漆内生真菌同时也可能是植物病原菌,内生真菌与植物病原菌没有明显界限;另一方面,该研究发现秋茄和桐花树叶片的病变是由外部的病原真菌感染引起,感染的原因可能是昆虫叮咬红树林植物后留下了创口,这些创口有利于真菌的感染。  相似文献

Cost-benefit analysis of foliar construction and maintenance costs and of carbon assimilation of leaves of differing life-span were conducted using two evergreen, three semi-deciduous, and three deciduous tree species of savannas of north Australia. Rates of radiant-energy-saturated CO2 assimilation (P max) and dark respiration were measured and leaves were analysed for total nitrogen, fat, and ash concentrations, and for heat of combustion. Specific leaf area, and leaf N and ash contents were significantly lower in longer-lived leaves (evergreen) than shorter-lived leaves (deciduous) species. Leaves of evergreen species also had significantly higher heat of combustion and lower crude fat content than leaves of deciduous species. On a leaf area basis, P max was highest in leaves of evergreen species, but on a leaf dry mass basis it was highest in leaves of deciduous species. P max and total Kieldahl N content were linearly correlated across all eight species, and foliar N content was higher in leaves of deciduous than evergreen species. Leaf construction cost was significantly higher and maintenance costs were lower for leaves of evergreen than deciduous species. Maintenance and construction costs were linearly related to each other across all species. Leaves of evergreen species had a higher cost-benefit ratio compared to leaves of deciduous species but with longer lived leaves, the payback interval was longer in evergreen than deciduous species. These results support the hypotheses that longer lived leaves are more expensive to construct than short-lived leaves, and that a higher investment of N into short-lived leaves occurs which supports a higher P max over a shorter payback interval. 走马胎为西南地区常用中药材,被广泛用于食物蒸炖、药浴等日常保健。近年来走马胎叶片被开发成代泡茶,有效拓宽了应用途径。为了明确走马胎叶片营养价值,该研究采用国标方法分别对不同栽培年限走马胎叶片的矿质元素、一般营养、氨基酸及活性成分进行了分析和评价。结果表明:(1)走马胎叶片含有非常丰富的矿质营养,并符合高钾低钠型保健食品特征。1年生植株叶片矿质元素含量最高,其中磷(P)、铁(Fe)、锰(Mn)、锌(Zn)显著高于2~4年生植株(P<0.05)。(2)走马胎叶片的一般营养和氨基酸含量较高,且随栽培年限不同存在明显差异;4年生植株叶片维生素C、总糖和氨基酸含量显著高于1~3年植株(P<0.05)。(3)走马胎叶片含有丰富的酚类和皂苷类物质,黄酮类物质含量较低,其中1年生总皂苷和4年生总酚含量均显著高于其他栽培年限的植株叶片(P<0.05)。综上研究表明,与常用果蔬及茶叶相比,走马胎叶片营养价值较高,其中1年生的植株叶片中矿质营养和皂苷类物质的总含量最高,4年生的植株叶片中一般营养(除脂肪外)、氨基酸及酚类物质的总含量最高,具有较好的开发利用前景。  相似文献

1. Foliar colour changes with age and, as a consequence, reflects the internal physiology of leaves. Anthocyanins are ‘red’ pigments known for their photoprotective role in young leaves and have been suggested to influence the host‐finding behaviour of insect herbivores. The existence of colour vision in some species of Eucalyptus‐feeding psyllid provides evidence for the possibility of them being able to locate and select leaves based on their age. 2. The preferences of three psyllid species, namely Anoeconeossa bundoorensis, Glycaspis brimblecombei, and Ctenarytaina bipartita, for leaf colours were tested using live leaves of different age, presented without olfactory cues. Changes in foliar pigment concentrations and relationships with amino acid composition in these psyllid's hosts, namely Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus kitsoniana, were studied to consider the adaptive significance of selecting leaves based on their age. 3. The preference for and attraction to young, anthocyanic leaves of two red‐sensitive psyllid species (A. bundoorensis and G. brimblecombei) were demonstrated, whilst the green‐yellow‐sensitive species (C. bipartita) was shown to discriminate between young ‘yellow’ and older ‘green’ leaves. Age‐related variation in leaf colour was positively correlated with greater availability of essential amino acids. 4. This study presents a unique example of herbivore attraction to ‘red’ leaves and strong evidence for reliance on colour vision in insect orientation at the within‐host level.  相似文献

  • 1 Larval performance of the leaf beetle Paropsis atomaria Oliver was determined for larvae raised on both new and mature leaves of Eucalyptus blakelyi Maiden. Larvae were transferred to mature leaves at different ages; control larvae stayed on new leaves through all instars.
  • 2 Only larvae reared on new leaves through the third instar survived to pupate on mature leaves; developmental time was prolonged by 20% and pupal weight was reduced by 50% in these larvae compared with larvae reared entirely on new leaves. Almost all larvae died when transferred to mature leaves as first, second or third instars.
  • 3 Low survival and slow development on mature leaves was mainly due to failure by larvae to feed. Larvae palpated leaves and could discriminate among leaf ages immediately, without biting into the leaf tissue.
  • 4 New leaves had higher concentrations of oil and tannins than old leaves, while there were no significant differences in nitrogen concentrations in the two types of leaves. Mature leaves were more than 3 times tougher than new leaves, in terms of g mm?2 of penetrometer force.
  • 5 In drought years E. blakelyi may not produce sufficient new leaves to supply specialist herbivores with their preferred food resource. We infer that drought years reduce P. atomaria larval performance significantly, and influence the population dynamics of the insect.

The population tendencies of Pseudomonas cichorii and P. syringae pv. garcae in young and mature coffee leaves were determined by inoculating streptomycin resistant bacterial cells from 24 h cultures into young and mature coffee leaves. The leaves were then sampled daily for 5 days and the number of bacterial cells per g of leaf tissue was determined. Pseudomonas cichorii increased in mature leaves only while P. syringae pv. garcae increased in young leaves. Symptom development was dependent on the presence of a large number of bacterial cells in the host tissue and coincided with the maximum content of bacterial cells in the leaf.  相似文献

该研究通过单种鹅掌藤(Schefflera arboricola)、单种团花(Neolamarckia cadamba)和混种团花与鹅掌藤的大根箱实验,跟踪分析表施2%(W/W)污泥后3个月(2020年9月、10月和11月)的鲜叶和凋落叶Cu、Zn、Cd和Hg含量以及凋落叶产量变化,分析鲜叶与凋落叶重金属含量关系以及凋落叶重金属回归量变化。结果表明:(1)污泥施用下团花鲜叶和凋落叶Cu含量均显著高于鹅掌藤,而Zn和Cd含量均显著低于鹅掌藤。(2)鹅掌藤鲜叶Zn含量在11月最低,而Hg含量在11月最高。(3)单种和混种团花鲜叶Zn、Cd和Hg含量在11月最高。(4)混种的团花凋落叶Hg含量随污泥施用时间延长而显著增加,而Cu、Zn和Cd含量变化不明显。(5)9月和11月鹅掌藤鲜叶Cd含量均与凋落叶Hg和Cd含量显著正相关。(6)鹅掌藤和团花凋落叶产量及Cu、Zn、Cd和Hg回归量分别在污泥施用1个月后(9月)和2个月后(10月)最高。综上所述,污泥施用时间对团花和鹅掌藤的鲜叶重金属含量影响较大,而对凋落叶重金属含量影响较小; 鹅掌藤鲜叶Cd含量与凋落叶Cd和Hg含量存在正相关; 鹅掌藤和团花分别在污泥施用1个月后(9月)和2个月后(10月)凋落叶重金属污染风险较高。该研究为污泥园林利用和凋落叶的合理处置提供了借鉴。  相似文献

The colonization, distribution, population density, and species diversity of amoebae on leaves of Oak Leaf lettuce, Lactuca sativa var. crispa, and Boston lettuce, L. sativa var. capitata, were investigated. The role of soil in the colonization of Oak Leaf lettuce was determined by comparing numbers of amoebae present on basal leaves (those that pass through soil) with numbers on wrapped leaves (those that do not pass through soil). Amoebae were present in ten samples of basal leaves and ranged from 154–1510/g of leaf tissue. Wrapped leaves failed to yield amoebae in seven of ten trials and contained <4 amoebae/g of tissue. Mean values for the population density of amoebae on Oak Leaf basal leaves and Boston lettuce leaves were 484 ± 133 and 453 ± 93, respectively. The distribution of amoebae on green and white parts of leaves from both kinds of lettuce was studied. The occurrence of amoebae on rinsed, unrinsed, visibly clean, and visibly dirty samples of Boston lettuce leaves was established.  相似文献
