The broad mite Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) was studied for one season (2009/2010) on three pepper cultivars (Travita, Top star and Habeba) in the nethouses in Egypt. The tarsonemid mite was fed upon by the predatory phytoseiid mite Amblyseius swirskii (Athias–Henriot). Population abundance of the tarsonemid pepper prey was affected by climatic conditions and predation. A control measure of one preventive treatment in nursery and two successive curative treatments, applied mid-September, in nethouses seemed to be the most successful management of the harmful mite. The effect of constant different temperatures on P. latus development, reproduction and population growth was investigated. At 11?°C, all activity ceased and by 36?°C the adult began to slow down. Life table parameters varied greatly, especially at 21?°C and 75%?R.H.  相似文献

Abstract

Studies on the life history and life table parameters of Neoseiulus cucumeris Oudemans (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were carried out under laboratory conditions of 25?±?1?°C and 65?±?5% RH; 30?±?1?°C and 60?±?5% RH; 35?±?1?°C and 55?±?5% RH. As prey, immature stages of tetranychid spider mite T. urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and the moving stages of the Tomato Russet Mite A. lycopersici (Massee) (Acari: Eriophyideae) were selected. The predatory phytoseiid mite, Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) was able to develop successfully from egg to adult stage through the entire life history on both preys. The higher of different temperatures and relative humidities shortened the development and increased reproduction and prey consumption and vice versa. The maximum reproduction (3.91, and 3.09 eggs/♀/day) was recorded at 35?°C and 65% RH, while the minimum (2.12, and 1.90 eggs/♀/day) was at 25?±?1?°C and 55?±?5% RH. when N. cucumeris fed on A. lycopersici and T. urticae, respectively. The reproductive rate on eriophyid was significantly higher than previously recorded on tetranychid. Life table parameters indicated that feeding of phytoseiid mite N. cucumeris on tomato russet mite A. lycopersici led to the highest reproduction rate (rm?=?0.268, 0.232 and 0.211 females/female/day), while feeding on T.urticae gave the lowest reproduction rate (rm?=?0.159, 0.143 and 0.131) at 35?°C and 55% RH, 30?°C and 60% RH and 25?°C and 65% RH, respectively. The population of N. cucumeris multiplied (36.81, 28.71 and 20.47) and (24.60, 19.58 and 14.62 times) in a generation time of (20.10, 23.20 and 25.14) and (22.35, 25.36 and 27.79 days) when a predator fed on A. lycopersici and T. urticae at the same temperature above mentioned, respectively. These results suggest that the two mites, particularly A. lycopersici, proved to be suitable prey for N.cucumeris, as a facultative predator.  相似文献

The predacious mites, Typhlodromus mangiferus Zaher and El-Borolossy and Typhlodromips swirskii (Athias-Henriot), reproduced successfully on mango powdery mildew Oidium mangiferae Berthet in absence or presence of spider mite prey Oligonichus mangiferus (Rahman and Sapra) under laboratory conditions of 25 ± 1°C and 60–65% R.H. Adult female of both predators consumed protonymphs of O. mangiferus at different experimental densities. The consumption rate increased with increasing prey densities up to 25 protonymphs/female/day and decreased significantly at 35 and 50 protonymphs/female/day for the two predatory mites. Addition of powdery mildew conidia to each prey density significantly reduced consumption of spider mites at 35 and 50 protonymphs/female/day. Mean eggs/female/day by T. swirskii and T. mangiferus was 0.30 and 0.72 when reared on powdery mildew conidia compared with 1.64 and 1.57 when fed on powdery mildew and tetranychid prey, respectively. This increase in reproduction would have compensated the reduction in protonymph prey consumption due to the presence of mildew conidia. Mite–mildew interactions are discussed.  相似文献

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, and onion thrips, Thrips tabaci, are both important polyphagous pests of vegetables and ornamentals in greenhouses. Difficulties in biological control of these pests have prompted a search for new natural enemies. Most recently, the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii has been commercialised as biological control agent of whiteflies and thrips. However, little is known about the suitability of thrips as prey for A. swirskii. We therefore assessed prey acceptance and life history of A. swirskii when feeding on F. occidentalis and T. tabaci at 25±1°C. Amblyseius swirskii juveniles preyed upon first larval instars of both F. occidentalis and T. tabaci but suffered from high mortality (67 and 78%). Developmental time (egg to adult) of A. swirskii was 7.8 days with either prey species. Adult A. swirskii females readily accepted first larval instars of both thrips species, which were attacked in <20 min on a leaf and <10 min in an artificial cage. Oviposition rates (0.92 and 0.99 eggs/female/day) and offspring sex ratios (63 and 70% females) were similar with F. occidentalis and T. tabaci as prey. Less than one-third of juveniles reaching adulthood and oviposition rates below one egg/female per day resulted in relatively low intrinsic rates of increase (r m) (0.056 and 0.024 per day with F. occidentalis and T. tabaci, respectively). Altogether, our study suggests that the recently reported superiority of A. swirskii to the widely used Neoseiulus cucumeris in suppression of thrips is due to other traits than its population growth capacity with thrips as prey.  相似文献

Effects on development, longevity, fecundity and predation of the predatory phytoseiid mite Typhlodromus mangiferus Zaher and El-Brolossy were studied in the laboratory at different temperatures and relative humidities using four prey mite species: the motile stages of the eriophyid mango bud mite Aceria mangiferae Sayed, the eriophyid leaf coating and webbing mite Cisaberoptus kenyae Keifer, the eriophyid mango rust mite Metaculus mangiferae (Attiah) and nymphs of the tetranychid mango red mite Oligonychus mangiferus (Rahman and Sabra). The increase of different temperatures and decrease of relative humidities from 25°C and 60% to 30°C and 55% and 35°C and 50% shortened development and increased reproduction and prey consumption. The developmental durations were almost similar when the predator was fed on eriophyids compared to that on tetranychid. The maximum reproduction (2.70, 2.08, 1.97 and 1.66 eggs/ ♀ /day) was recorded at the highest temperature and the lowest relative humidity, while the minimum reproduction (1.7, 1.54, 1.53, and 1.06 eggs/ ♀ /day) was noted at the lowest temperature and highest relative humidity with all mango prey species. Life table parameters indicated that feeding of T. mangiferus on A. mangiferae led to the highest reproduction rate (rm = 0.204 and 0.139 females/female/day), while feeding on O. mangiferus gave the lowest reproduction rate (rm = 0.137 and 0.116) at 35°C and 50% relative humidity and 25°C and 60% relative humidity, respectively. T. mangiferus seems to be a voracious predator of both mango eriophyid and tetranychid mites. The adult female daily consumed about 127 A. mangiferae, 97 C. kenyae, 86 M. mangiferae, and 18 O. mangiferus at 35°C and 50% relative humidity, while it devoured only 99.81, 86, 81, and 15 individuals, respectively at 25°C and 60% relative humidity. The present study revealed that each injurious mite is thought to be profitable prey species to T. mangiferus as a facultative predator.  相似文献

The predatory mite Lasioseius japonicus Ehara is a newly recorded species in China that has been shown to have great potential as a biological control agent. The species is a soil-dwelling mite that is known to prey on various pests including economically important mites, fungus gnats and other terricolous arthropods. Considering that temperature is one of the most important factors affecting the population dynamics of arthropods, the development, survival and reproduction of L. japonicus were evaluated under indoor conditions at seven temperatures: 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34 and 37 °C, at 75% relative humidity and L0:D24 h photoperiod. The mites were fed on the cereal mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) and the data were analyzed using the two-sex life table. The results demonstrated that L. japonicus could complete their development and reproduce at temperatures between 19 and 34 °C, but were unsuccessful at 37 °C. Increasing temperature shortened the development time of the pre-adult stage and the average generation time (T). The life table parameters indicated that at temperatures from 22 to 31 °C the development rate and reproduction of L. japonicus were highest: at 22, 25, 28 and 31 °C the net reproduction rate (R0) was 55.5, 61.6, 61.2 and 59.0, respectively, and the average fecundity rate (F) was 81.7, 88.0, 102.0 and 86.8, respectively. The maximum values of intrinsic population growth rate (r) (0.341) and finite rate of increase (λ) (1.407) occurred at 31 °C.

Development, oviposition, and survival of a commercially available predatory mite, Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot), were investigated to determine the life history parameters when they consumed a diet of cattail (Typha latifolia L.) pollen or tomato russet mites (Aculops lycopersici [Massee]) at 25 ± 0.5 °C and 70 ± 10% RH. Both diets were favorable for development, oviposition, and survival of A. swirskii. Amblyseius swirskii reared on mite prey showed improved performance as compared to pollen. Females laid a total of 26.8 and 38.1 eggs on the pollen and mite diets, respectively. The mortality of female A. swirskii was very low during the first 20 days on both diets, and the cumulative Weibull models that were used to describe age-specific survival and fecundity of female showed a good fit to the data. The net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm), and finite rate of increase (λ) of A. swirskii were higher on russet mites than when fed on the pollen diet due to their shorter immature development period and higher oviposition rate. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of the predatory mite was 0.185 and 0.201 on the pollen and mite diet, respectively. The mean generation time (T) and the population doubling time (Dt) were not significantly different for A. swirskii on the two diets. Our results provide life history information for a commercially available A. swirskii using two favorable diets and can be used to compare population growth under other diet sources.  相似文献

The tomato red spider mite, Tetranychus evansi, is reported as a severe pest of tomato and other solanaceous crops from Africa, from Atlantic and Mediterranean Islands, and more recently from the south of Europe (Portugal, Spain and France). A population of the predaceous mite Phytoseiulus longipes has been recently found in Brazil in association with T. evansi. The objective of this paper was to assess the development and reproduction abilities of this strain on T. evansi under laboratory conditions at four temperatures: 15, 20, 25 and 30°C. The duration of the immature phase ranged from 3.1 to 15.4 days, at 30 and 15°C, respectively. Global immature lower thermal threshold was 12.0°C. Immature survival was high at all temperatures tested (minimum of 88% at 30°C). The intrinsic rate of increase (r m) of P. longipes ranged from 0.091 to 0.416 female/female/day, at 15 and 30°C, respectively. P. longipes would be able to develop at a wide range of temperatures feeding on T. evansi and has the potential to control T. evansi populations.  相似文献

The predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is currently used as an efficient biological control agent of thrips, whiteflies and spider mites, which are economically damaging pests of ornamental plants and vegetable crops grown in greenhouses and fields worldwide. Currently, the effects of relative humidity (RH) and water availability on the optimal growth of A. swirskii are unknown. Here, we test the combined effects of different levels of RH (33%, 53%, 73% and 92%) and water availability on the development and reproduction of male and female A. swirskii feeding on the dried fruit mite, Carpoglyphus lactis (Linnaeus). While eggs failed to hatch at 33% RH, the survival rates of the immature stages at?≥?53% RH increased solely in response to water availability and not due to changes in RH. Regarding growth and development, low RH extended the egg–adult duration and pre-oviposition period. We also found that the negative effects of low RH on fecundity were partially or completely eliminated when drinking water was available. For the life table parameters, the highest values of net reproductive rate (R0) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) were achieved at the highest RH and when drinking water was available. Overall, water availability mitigated the negative effect of low RH on female reproduction, and female development was more sensitive to water availability than male development. Lastly, a comparison of similar research on A. swirskii suggested that water availability and RH are more influential on r than food source or temperature.

The biological aspects, thermal requirements and life table parameters of the phytoseiid predatory mite Amblyseiella denmarki fed on Aceria dioscoridis was determined at four temperatures, i.e. 15, 20, 28 and 35°C. The total developmental durations for both females and males were correlated negatively with increasing temperature. The minimum developmental thresholds (T 0) of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph stages and life cycle of A. denmarki females averaged 13.15, 4.56, 11.22, 12.72 and 11.80, respectively, while those of males were 12.40, 3.01, 9.82, 10.88 and 10.04. On the other hand, females and males required 89.28 and 93.45 degree days (DD), respectively, to reach adulthood. The male life span averaged 63.32, 49.25, 25.39 and 18.26 days while that of female was 90.51, 64.44, 29.51 and 19.99 days when the predator was reared at 15, 20, 28 and 35°C, respectively. The mean generation time (T) averaged 38.84, 24.87, 9.24 and 8.56 days, and the net reproductive rate (R 0) values were 3.79, 10.042, 26.488 and 7.172 when the predator was kept at 15, 20, 28 and 35°C, respectively. The net rate of natural increase (r m) was 0.032, 0.092, 0.354 and 0.230, whereas the finite rate of increase (e rm) averaged 1.032, 1.097, 1.425 and 1.258 at 15, 20, 28 and 35°C, respectively.  相似文献

The predatory mite Typhlodromips swirskii (Athias–Henriot) is commonly used to suppress pest populations of thrips and whitefly in commercial greenhouses. Many generalist phytoseiid mites can be reared on astigmatid factitious prey. This study investigated the life table parameters of T. swirskii to the astigmatid mite Suidasia medanensis (Oudemans) and the capture success ratio of T. swirskii to different life stages of the prey. Juvenile development time and survival was 5.01 ± 0.10 days and 93 %, respectively. The intrinsic (r m ) and finite (λ) rates of increase were 0.222 and 1.249, respectively, with average oviposition rate of 1.71 ± 0.07 eggs/female/day. The capture success ratio of T. swirskii to S. medanensis was: eggs > freeze killed adults > nymphs > live adults. Typhlodromips swirskii was concluded to exhibit good population growth rates with S. medanensis as prey and, a prey population with predominance of eggs and nymphs to be advantageous to the predator due to an unidentified defence mechanism of adult prey.  相似文献

Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are major pests in greenhouse crops. Recently, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) was shown to be an effective biological control agent of both pests. Therefore, the prey preference of A. swirskii was determined using immature stages of T. urticae and B. tabaci in three various treatments based on Manly's β preference index (β). These treatments consisted of immature stages of two prey species (egg, first and second instar nymphs) with densities 12:12, 6:6 and 3:3, respectively, and with 13 replicates. After 24?h starvation, same-aged females of A. swirskii were added to the leaf discs. All experiments were done on bean leaf discs in Petri dishes (8?cm in diameter) in laboratory conditions with 25?±?2°C, 70?±?5% relative humidity and the photoperiod of 16L:8D hours. Comparing the preference indices using t-tests indicates a significant preference of the predator on eggs (t?=?10.80, df?=?24, P?t?=?8.17, df?=?24, P?T. urticae than B. tabaci. Our findings suggest that developmental stages of prey have effect on the prey selection by A. swirskii.  相似文献

In laboratory studies mites of Aceria sheldoni were reared on citrus fruit peels, beneath coloured cellophane hoods, to cater for their thigmotaxis and sensitivity to light of particular wave lengths. Hatching was most successful at 25°C and 98% r.h. but was reduced by low humidities (35–40% r.h.), when abnormal dwarf larvae emerged. The eggs hatched in 3–14 days; the length of a generation (egg to egg) was 12–33 days. The threshold of embryonic development was 9 °C and that for completion of the life cycle, egg to egg, was 12.5 °C. The average number of eggs laid per female was six (4–8). It increased to twelve (5–19) if the mite, during its larval stages, had been fed on buds. The vitality of both the eggs and the mature mites was tested by exposure to extreme low and high temperatures (below 0 °C, 39 °C): 50% of mites died after 30 min at 30 °C; 50% died after 30 min at –15 °C or lower.  相似文献

Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a key predator of a wide range of pests including thrips, whitefly and several mite pests. A number of artificial diets have been developed for this predator, but all of these are liquid, complicating their use in mass production. In the present study, we investigated the survival, development and reproduction of A. swirskii fed on several dry artificial diets: the tested diets were freeze dried forms of previously developed liquid meridic artificial diets supplemented with extracts of decapsulated cysts of Artemia franciscana Kellogg (Anostraca: Artemiidae) or with pupal hemolymph of Chinese oak silkworm Antheraea pernyi (Guérin-Méneville) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), and newly composed powdered meridic artificial diets supplemented with ground dry A. franciscana cysts or lyophilized pupal hemolymph of A. pernyi. Performance of the mite on the artificial diets was compared with that on cattail pollen (Typha latifolia L.). Developmental time of A. swirskii females offered lyophilized diets was significantly shorter than on powdered diets. Total fecundity was significantly higher for females fed on the lyophilized diets than for those maintained on the powdered diet with A. franciscana. Daily oviposition rates were similar on T. latifolia pollen and both lyophilized diets but lower on both powdered diets. The highest intrinsic rate of increase was observed when A. swirskii was fed on T. latifolia pollen (0.210 females per female per day), followed by the freeze dried diets enriched with A. pernyi and A. franciscana (0.195 and 0.184 females per female per day, respectively), and the lowest growth rates were observed on the powdered diets supplemented with A. franciscana and A. pernyi (0.159 and 0.158 females per female per day, respectively). In conclusion, the phytoseiid was able to effectively feed on solid, powdered artificial diets. Freeze-drying of liquid diets did not influence their value to support the development and reproduction of A. swirskii. For mass rearing purposes, these dry diets have several advantages over liquid ones, including more convenient application and storage. Furthermore, they are believed to have better potential for use as supplemental foods to sustain predatory mite populations in the crop after release.  相似文献

Abstract

Studies on the developmental duration, immature survival, longevity, reproduction, and life-table parameters of the predatory mite, Euseius scutalis Athias-Henriot were carried out under laboratory conditions of 28 ± 1°C and 75 ± 5% relative humidity (RH). The food sources for the predator included Ricinus communis pollen, eggs and nymphs of Eutetranychus orientalis, moving stages of Aceria ficus and Rhyncaphytoptus ficifoliae and immature stages of Icerya aegyptica. Development was faster and reproduction was higher when E. scutalis fed on R. communis pollen, while the developmental time increased and reproduction decreased when fed on R. ficifoliae. The number of A. ficus consumed was significantly higher compared with R. ficifoliae. Life-table parameters showed that a diet of R. communis pollen provided the shortest generation time (T = 9.51511 days), female longevity (21.37 days), the highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm = 0.33789) and greatest total fecundity, which resulted in the high net reproductive rate (Ro = 24.906) value. Aceria ficus and R. ficifoliae showed a relatively close value of (T = 11.59057 and 11.5222), (rm = 0.218029 and 0.2158297), (λ = 1.243623 and 1.240891) and the number of eggs deposited per female per day (1.20 and 1.20 eggs/♀/day). Eggs of E. orientalis were the least favourable source of food among all food tested.  相似文献

Amblyseius swirskii Athias‐Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a predatory mite used to control whiteflies and thrips in protected crops. This biocontrol agent, originating from the Eastern Mediterranean region, has been mass‐reared for commercial use since 2005 and is widely used in augmentative biocontrol programs. As a polyphagous predator, it has to cope with different biotic and abiotic factors. However, possible adaptation to mass rearing for production might be hindering its resilience and capacity for optimum performance in the field. In this study, we investigated the effect of long‐term mass rearing on the genetic diversity of A. swirskii. We identified six microsatellite loci from whole‐genome nanopore sequencing of A. swirskii and used these in a comparative analysis of the genetic diversity and differentiation in eight wild populations collected from Israel in 2017 and a commercially available population. Our results indicate that the commercial population is 2.5× less heterozygous than the wild A. swirskii. Furthermore, the commercial population has the highest genetic differentiation from all the natural populations, as indicated by higher pairwise Fst values. Overall, we show that commercially reared A. swirskii have reduced genetic variation compared to their wild counterparts, which may reduce their performance when released to control pests in an integrated pest management (IPM) context.  相似文献

Developmental periods of egg, larva and nymphal stages and fecundity as well as predation of Cheletomimus bakeri (Acari: Cheyletidae) feeding on Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acari: Tetranychidae) were evaluated at different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C) at 65 ± 10% relative humidity and 16 L: 8D in the laboratory. The development periods of C. bakeri from egg through adult decreased significantly when the temperature was increased from 20°C to 35°C. Egg and total development periods of C. bakeri at 20, 25, 30 and 35°C were 13.86, 7.98, 5.07, 4.08 days and 58.66, 41.51, 21.21, 22.92 days, respectively. The highest numbers of total and daily egg production were found at 20°C and 30°C, respectively. Net reproductive rate (R0 = 13.29), mean generation time (T = 88.30), gross reproductive rate (GRR = 17.46) and doubling time (DT = 23.66) were the highest at 20°C. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm = 0.0592) and finite capacity for increase (λ = 1.061) for C. bakeri were the highest at 30°C. Predation of C. bakeri increased throughout the range of prey densities. The highest consumption number of C. bakeri feeding on T. cinnabarinus males per day was 4.63, 4.70 and 4.60 when confined to 40, 80 and 160 individuals, respectively. Our data suggest that C. bakeri does not appear to have much promise for the control of spider mites because of the characteristics of the predator such as slow development period, poor searching capacity and low intrinsic rate of increase.  相似文献

Abstract. The thermal preferences of Alaskozetes antarcticus (Acari, Cryptostigmata) and Cryptopygus antarcticus (Collembola, Isotomidae) were investigated over 6 h within a temperature gradient (?3 to +13 °C), under 100% relative humidity (RH) conditions. After 10 days of acclimation at ?2 or +11 °C, individual supercooling points (SCP) and thermopreferences were assessed, and compared with animals maintained for 10 days under fluctuating field conditions (?6 to +7 °C). Acclimation at ?2 °C lowered the mean SCP of both A. antarcticus (?24.2 ± 9.1) and C. antarcticus (?14.7 ± 7.7) compared to field samples (?19.0 ± 9.0 and ?10.7 ± 5.2, respectively). Acclimation at +11 °C increased A. antarcticus mean SCP values (?13.0 ± 8.5) relative to field samples, whereas those of C. antarcticus again decreased (?16.7 ± 9.1). Mites acclimated under field conditions or at +11 °C selected temperatures between ?3 and +1 °C. After acclimation at ?2 °C, both species preferred +1 to +5 °C. Cryptopygus antarcticus maintained under field conditions preferred +5 to +9 °C, whereas individuals acclimated at +11 °C selected +9 to +13 °C. For A. antarcticus, thermopreference was not influenced by its cold hardened state. The distribution of field specimens was further assessed within two combined temperature and humidity gradient systems: (i) 0–3 °C/12% RH, 3–6 °C/33% RH, 6–9 °C/75% RH and 9–12 °C/100% RH and (ii) 0–3 °C/100% RH, 3–6 °C/75% RH, 6–9 °C/33% RH and 9–12 °C/12% RH. In gradient (i), C. antarcticus distributed homogeneously, but, in gradient (ii), C. antarcticus preferred 0–3 °C/100% RH. Alaskozetes antarcticus selected temperatures between 0 and +6 °C regardless of RH conditions. Cryptopygus antarcticus appears better able than A. antarcticus to opportunistically utilize developmentally favourable thermal microclimates, when moisture availability is not restricted. The distribution of A. antarcticus appears more influenced by temperature, especially during regular freeze‐thaw transitions, when this species may select low temperature microhabitats to maintain a cold‐hardened state.  相似文献
