The economic loss due to pest attack in stored commodities is a serious problem worldwide. About 200 insect species attack stored commodities. These insect pests are responsible for quantitative and qualitative losses in cereal grains. Among the stored grain pests, Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella is considered as common, top of the list and most destructive pest of cereal grains. Its infestation starts in the standing crop and continues in storage. Although there are many control strategies, our need is some effective, cheap and readily available strategy for safe storage. This review presents different ways by which S. cerealella can be controlled. In this paper, a list of approaches is given which are used to improve the protection of stored grains against S. cerealella attack. These approaches include use of edible oils, containers, synthetic chemicals, agricultural waste materials, plant derivatives, bacterial protoxins, biopesticides, biocontrol enhancers and semiochemicals. If these tactics are followed as combined strategies in a compatible manner, they can provide us an integrated pest management programme for the efficient control of S. cerealella in cereal grains.  相似文献

The red-striped soft scale Pulvinaria tenuivalvata (Newstead) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) is a pest attacking sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) recently recorded in Upper Egypt governorates. Sugarcane plantations in Upper Egypt were thoroughly inspected for 2 years from January 2001 until December 2002 to record infestation with P. tenuivalvata and its population density. Also, crops, plants and weeds growing near sugarcane fields were examined to determine the host range of this pest. A pest species of soft scale insect has become increasingly dangerous on sugarcane in Egypt. The insect occurrence was from 3?–?8 months on the infested hosts. The red-striped soft scale was active from May until December. Sugarcane, Cogon grass and Deccan grass were the hosts, which harboured all insect stages. The infestation was restricted on the lower surface of the leaves and lower numbers were found on the upper surface. Damage to sugarcane including withering of the leaves and reduced yield, with reduction in the sucrose content of the juice. The growth rate of pest population infesting the sugarcane plants in season 2001, increased gradually during the period from June to September and decreased from October to December. The same trend was found for the growth rate of population in season 2002. At the high growth rate it is advisable to use chemical control. The effect of weather factors on the population density of the P. tenuivalvata (the correlation between the total number of pests and temperature or RH.) were positive to both seasons. The tea leaf roller, Caloptilia theivora Walsingham (Lepidoptera: Gracillariinae), is one of the serious pests of tea plants in Japan. To understand the mechanism of seasonal occurrence of this insect pest, we developed a population dynamics model that explicitly incorporates the temperature-dependent development of the pest. The model predictions were compared with observed captures in pheromone traps at the experimental site of the Kagoshima Tea Experiment Research Station in Japan. The results showed that the emergence timing of the insect pest observed in the field was determined primarily by temperature. The relationship between the timing of adult emergence and the leaf damage level was also studied using a logistic regression model. The infestation level decreased as the interval between the adult peak emergence date and the date of tea plucking increased, implying that asynchrony between plant phenology and emergence of the insect pest is a critical factor reducing damage level. We examined how the damage level changes according to global warming. Increased temperature made the timing of insect appearance forward and enhance asynchrony of plant–pest phenology. Therefore, reduction of damage level by the insect pest is expected under global warming.  相似文献

The seed-head weevil, Larinus latus Herbst (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was recorded for the first time in Egypt on the milk thistle, Silybum marianum (L.) (Asteraceae: Compositaea), which is considered as a weed in certain winter field crops and as a herb with medical importance. The growth of aquatic insects in a small mountain stream was studied with emphasis on water temperature. Growth of the five dominant species was examined in relation to degree-days. This measure accounts for time and the minimum temperature necessary for insect growth. All species showed reduced specific growth rates with lower temperatures, but some (Ephemerella dorothea, Leuctra tenella, Neumoura wui) did not stop growing at even the lowest water temperatures. Both Diplectrona modesta and Paraleptophlebia assimilis had minimum growth temperatures. Studies demonstrated that the growth of stream insects is directly proportional to the number of degree-days experienced by a population.  相似文献

The role of wildland weeds that serve as alternate hosts for insect pests has not been directly examined for the potential to sustain pest populations or facilitate pest outbreaks. The development of weed biological control programmes is also complicated by weed species that are closely related to economically important or native plants, especially rare or special status species. In recent surveys in southern California, USA, we found a newly introduced insect pest of cole crops, Bagrada hilaris Burmeister (Bagrada bug), feeding on Brassicaceae weeds in riparian areas adjacent to agricultural fields where cole crops are routinely grown. Insect populations grew to levels well over action thresholds and caused severe damage to populations of the invasive weed, Lepidium latifolium (perennial pepperweed). The numerical response of B. hilaris on L. latifolium and other Brassicaceae weeds in natural areas may pose a significant challenge to effectively managing pest populations in crops. However, the accidental introduction of this insect provides the opportunity to examine plant–insect interactions with important implications for development of biologically based control methods for weeds.  相似文献

The genus Gynecaptera Skorikov (Bradynobaenidae: Apterogyninae) is revised from Egypt, based on specimens collected from the Sinai Peninsula and those deposited in Egyptian insect collections as well as recorded data from the literature. Three species were previously recorded from Egypt, G. alexandri (Invrea), G. alfierii (Invrea) and G. trimaculata (Skorikov). Gynecaptera sinaitica sp. n. is described here. An illustrated key and a faunistic list comprising all Gynecaptera species recorded from Egypt are also given.  相似文献

Ceratapion basicorne (Coleoptera: Apionidae) is a prospective biological control agent of yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis, Asteraceae: Cardueae), which is an important invasive alien weed in the western United States. Previous studies have shown that it is possible for this insect to oviposit on and complete development on safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) under no-choice laboratory conditions; however, it has never been reported as a pest of safflower. Field experiments were conducted at three sites in eastern Turkey during 3 years to evaluate the risk of attack on safflower by this insect in its native range. At two sites where C. basicorne was the only apionid observed, no safflower plants were attacked despite high attack rates on yellow starthistle test plants (48–98% of plants infested). At a third site, where C. basicorne and three other species in the same genus; C. scalptum, C. orientale, and C. onopordi were present, 8–26% of safflower plants were infested, but none of the insects reared from safflower during 3 years were C. basicorne. Other authors have reported rearing C. basicorne from field-collected plants of only Ce. solstitialis, Ce. cyanus, Ce. depressa, and Cnicus benedictus. Our results indicate that C. basicorne does not attack safflower under field conditions and that its introduction would not pose a risk to this crop.  相似文献

The woodwasp Sirex noctilio F. (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) is probably the most important pest of pine tree plantations of the southern hemisphere. We studied the spatial arrangement of an endemic population of the woodwasp S. noctilio within pine plantations located in northwest Patagonia, Argentina, during three successive years since colonization. By censusing healthy and attacked trees, which provided data on current and past yearly woodwasp attacks, we studied: (i) the spatial pattern of attacked trees during the endemic phase of a woodwasp population, and (ii) the changes in the spatial arrangement through time and with an increasing (i.e., no intervention) pest population. Among a total of 53 649 counted trees, attack rates were low during the study period (accumulated attack below 0.5%). Results of spatial statistical analysis showed that woodwasp attack is highly clumped, and that spatial aggregation increases with time, even with increasing numbers of attacked trees. The observed spatial arrangement, a consequence of a demographic process, can have important implications for the management of woodwasp populations and contributes to our understanding of the nature of outbreak population behaviour in this pestiferous forest insect.  相似文献

Although pollination networks between plants and flower visitors are diverse and flexible, seed production of many plant species is restricted by pollen limitation. Obligate outcrossers often suffer from low pollinator activity or severe interspecific competition for pollinator acquisition among co-flowering species. This study focused on seasonal changes in plant–flower visitor linkages in an alpine ecosystem and examined whether and how this seasonality affected the seed-set of Primula modesta, a self-incompatible distylous herb having long-tubed flowers. First, we recorded the linkages between plants and flower visitors along the snowmelt gradient. Then, pollination experiment was conducted to estimate the degree of pollen limitation over the course of flowering season of P. modesta. Flower visitors were classified by their tongue length based on the morphological matching with P. modesta flowers. As the season progressed, plant–visitor linkages became more diverse and generalized, and the visitation frequency to P. modesta flowers increased. In the later part of the season, however, the seed set of P. modesta was significantly reduced due to severe pollen limitation, presumably because of increased competition for long-tongued pollinators among co-flowering species. The present study revealed that pollinator availability for specialist species may be restricted even when plant–visitor linkages are diverse and generalized as a whole. In the case of P. modesta, morphological matching and competition for pollinators might be the main factors explaining this discrepancy.  相似文献

The black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon, is an insect pest with great agricultural importance worldwide. In Egypt, it has acquired resistance against most of the conventional pesticides, particularly organophosphate insecticides, applied against it. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of two benzoylureas (chitin synthesis inhibitors) namely chlorfluazuron and flufenoxuron on some developmental and reproductive parameters of Agrotis ipsilon that survived treatment of newly molted fourth instars with the LC50 of these compounds (1.00 and 4.68 mg/L, respectively) using leaf–dip method. These two compounds significantly enhanced the mean larval and pupal durations, whereas they significantly declined the mean percentage pupation, adult emergence, pupal weight, adult longevity, fecundity, and fertility compared to untreated insects. The mean pre-oviposition period was not significantly affected, whereas the mean oviposition period was significantly decreased. Both chlorfluazuron and flufenoxuron significantly decreased the mean total protein, carbohydrate, and lipid content in the ovaries compared to untreated insects, except for insignificant decrease in the total protein in flufenoxuron-treated ones. Additionally, the total ovariolar length was significantly atrophied. In conclusion, chlorfluazuron and flufenoxuron interfere with vitellogenesis of A. ipsilon. Moreover, they could suppress the population size of this insect species by affecting its development and reproductive potential.  相似文献

The Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), is an important insect pest of wheat (Triticum spp.) in North Africa, North America, southern Europe and northern Kazakhstan. Both wheat and this pest are believed to have originated from West Asia in the Fertile Crescent. The virulence of a Hessian fly population from Syria against a set of cultivars carrying different resistance genes, in addition to other effective sources with unknown genes, was determined in the field and laboratory at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) during the 2005/2006 cropping season. Only two resistance genes (H25 and H26) were effective against the Syrian Hessian fly population, making it the most virulent worldwide. This high virulence supports the hypothesis that Hessian fly coevolved with wheat in the Fertile Crescent of West Asia. The ICARDA screening programme is using this Hessian fly population to identify new resistance genes to this pest.  相似文献

The incidence of banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa Coqueral and the coccinellid predators populations on banana plants cultivated at the Agricultural Research Centre Farm in El-Kanater El-Khayria, Qualiobia Governorate, Egypt (about 30 km North Cairo) had been studied. The population of this insect pest was relatively high during the cold and wet months (October, November, December, January and February), and found at its lowest level during the summer months. On the other hand, the numbers of aphid were higher on the mother plants than on the suckers. On mother plants, the population density was much higher on the lower parts of the plant than on the upper parts. The growth rate of aphid population infesting the mother plant of banana in season 2001, increased during the period from January to March and decreased from April to June. The population growth rate then increased from July to November then decreased in December. The same trend could be applied for the growth rate of aphid population in season 2002. At high growth rate it is advisable to use chemical control. The effect of weather factors on the population density of the banana aphid; the correlation between the total number of aphid and temperature or R.H. had been worked out. The coccinellid beetles were found on the banana plants during the warm period from March to August.  相似文献

Abstract

The present work was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Trichogramma evanescens (Westwood) in controlling the grape berry moth Lobesia botrana (Schiff) in two grape farms, in El-Beheira and El-Gharbia Governorates, northern Egypt during 2004 and 2005 seasons. T. evanescens was mass produced on Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) eggs in the National Research Centre in Egypt. The horizontal and vertical searching activity of T. evanescens was studied to determine the proper way of distributing the Trichogramma cards in vineyards. Field experiments were also conducted to evaluate T. evanescens efficacy to control L. botrana on a large scale. Parasitism by T. evanescens on L. botrana eggs was greatly affected with the horizontal or vertical distance from the release points as well as with the rate of release. Parasitism reached over 97% and the percentage of reduction in damage caused by the pest reached 96.8% in treated plots. A significant increase in the crop was achieved in treated plots. T. evanescens could be a potential candidate for biological control of the grape moth in vineyards.  相似文献

Populations of the rapeseed pollen beetle Meligethes aeneus F. (Col., Nitidulidae) from areas with 0–16 years of history of intensive rapeseed growing were compared for key ecological characters. During the first 16 years of rapeseed cultivation the reproductive success of M. aeneus increased 200–300% over that of the beetles living on the natural host plants, cruciferous weeds. The increase was linear over time and statistically highly significant, and it did not appear to be related to food quality or to the size of the beetles. During the same period the tolerance to intraspecific competition decreased, possibly due to the relative absence of such competition on the new crop. Furthermore, the optimum population density for M. aeneus to maximize the size of its next generation on summer turnip rape was determined to be 0.5–1.0 beetles/plant, which is slightly below the economic threshold for chemical control (1 beetle/plant). Therefore the practical protection of the rapeseed yield also ensures the highest possible pest population size for the next year. These mechanisms may in part explain the particular noxiousness of the species as a pest all over Europe. In general these data show that after the introduction of a new crop plant into a region, significant changes during the recruitment process in a pestiferous insect may take place, contributing to the future pest status of the insect. It is suggested that such genetic and ecological changes in insects may be a more common mechanism than previously thought in initiating and sustaining pest outbreaks, and that conventional pest management methods may enhance that effect.  相似文献

The Mediterranean black scale, Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Homoptera: Coccidae) is the most important pest of olive in Egypt. Indigenous parasitoid Metaphycus lounsburyi (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) from different localities in Egypt, were manipulated, reared and mass produced for classical biological control in Egypt, more than 193130 parasitoids were released. Several releases were made between May 1999 to April 2001. Increases of the parasitism from 17.4 to 42.0 and from 6.4 to 19.2 during the first year (1999–2000) and the second year (2000–2001), respectively in the Northern Coast. This parasitoid became established in some of the release sites in El-Arish and Matruh Governorates.  相似文献

The microanatomy and ultrastructure of the excretory system of the Sacoglossa have been investigated from two species by means of semithin serial sections, reconstructions and transmission electron microscopy. Whereas Bosellia mimetica shows a functional metanephridial system consisting of a heart with ventricle and auricle in a pericardium and a single kidney, Alderia modesta lacks heart and pericardium, possessing only several haemocoelic sinuses and a very long kidney. In B. mimetica podocytes as the site of ultrafiltration could be detected in the pericardial epithelium lining the auricular wall. The flat epithelium of the kidney with extensive basal infoldings and a dense microvillous border towards the luminal surface serves to modify the ultrafiltrate. In A. modesta podocytes are absent. Solitary rhogocytes (pore cells), the fine structure of which strongly resembles podocytes (meandering slits with diaphragms covered by extracellular matrix), occur in B. mimetica and A. modesta, representing additional loci of ultrafiltration. The presence of podocytes situated in the epicardial wall of the auricle is regarded as plesiomorphic for the Mollusca and confirmed for the Sacoglossa in this study, contradicting earlier assumptions of the loss of the primary site of ultrafiltration in the ancestors of the Opisthobranchia. In contrast to the likewise heart-less Rhodopidae with a pseudoprotonephridial ultrafiltration system, A. modesta shows no further modifications of the excretory system. Field experiments were conducted with some commercial plant growth regulators (PGRs) to determine their effects on agronomic characteristics, pest densities, and predators when administered as a foliar spay on cotton at Adnan Menderes University Agricultural Research Center located in Aydin, Turkey, during the 2006 and 2007 cotton-growing seasons. The three commercial PGRs, Pix, Tonic, and Turbo pamuk, were sprayed at recommended doses and application time during the study. Application of PGRs significantly positively affected the yield, plant height, average number of open bolls, and predators, and significantly decreased the population densities of some economically important cotton pests. However, lint quality, ginning turnout, and average of seed cotton weight were not affected by the treatments. More yield was obtained in Pix- and Turbo pamuk-treated plots. The lowest densities of Bemisia tabaci, Frankliniella spp., and leaves infested with Liriomyza trifolii were recorded in Pix-treated plots. Although Turbo pamuk and Tonic numerically lowered the pest population densities compared to the control, the changes were not significant and these PGRs were not as effective as Pix. Furthermore, Empoasca spp. was not affected by the treatments. Populations of predators were not affected by the PGRs in Aranea orders, but were affected in Heteroptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, and Thysanoptera. Pix proved more suitable than others to producing resistance against pests and increasing the yields. PGRs neither enhanced any insect attack nor reduced predators in the study. Therefore, PGRs may be considered a component of Integrated Pest Management to provide higher yields in cotton.  相似文献

The potato leaf miner, Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard), is an important pest of potato throughout the world, including Korea. A method was developed for mass rearing the parasitoid Diglyphus isaea (Walker) using faba bean, Vicia faba L. (Fabaceae), as the host‐plant and L. huidobrensis as the insect host. Faba bean plants were planted in pots and maintained in a greenhouse for about 15 d. Pots were then exposed to adult leaf miners in oviposition cages for 4 h. Plants containing late second to early third instar larvae were exposed to adult D. isaea in parasitoid cages for 24 h. The leaf area per pot after 15 d was 597.9 cm2, which produced 103.33 larvae per pot. The number of adult parasitoids emerging per pot was 72.5; about 41% of these were female. The daily cost of parasitoid production was USD20.95 per 1000 individual parasitoids. The methodology developed for D. isaea could be used to rear other ectoparasitoids such as Hemiptarsenus spp. and Pnigalio sp. with different insect hosts like L. trifolii. This is why this mass‐rearing information is important for securing test insect materials for ecological and biological study of Liriomyza species, and also for developing a biological control for Liriomyza species other than L. huidobrensis by mass production of associated natural enemies. We are facing rapid agro‐ecosystem changes including pest systems. Continuous monitoring of Liriomyza in solanaceous crops is needed.  相似文献

The coffee berry borer (CBB) is the most prevalent pest of coffee plantations. Within the Coffea genus, C. arabica is susceptible to CBB and C. liberica shows a lower susceptibility. Two EST libraries were constructed from the total RNA of C. arabica and C. liberica fruits artificially infested with CBBs for 24 h. Using 6000 clones sequenced per library, a unigene database was generated, obtaining 3634 singletons and 1454 contigs. For each contig, the proportion of sequences present in both species was determined and a differential gene expression between the species was detected. C. arabica displayed a higher relative expression of proteins involved in general stress responses, whereas C. liberica showed the induction of a higher number of insect defense proteins. In order to validate the results, quantifications through real-time PCR were done. A hevein-like protein, an isoprene synthase, a salicylic acid carboxyl methyltransferase and a patatin-like protein gene were highly upregulated in C. liberica at 24 and/or 48 h after insect infestation compared to C. arabica. The identification of metabolic pathways induced by this pest insect provides tools to take advantage of the genetic resources available for the control of CBB.  相似文献
