Leaf spot of pawpaw is hereby reported for the first time in Nigeria. The symptom is characterized by a papery center surrounded by a yellow halo. The causal organism is Corynespora cassiicola. Ripe fruits and abaxial surfaces of the leaves were significantly more susceptible to infection than unripe fruits and adaxial surfaces of leaves. Growth and sporulation of the fungus on several media was investigated. The organism grew faster on malt-extract agar (MEA) derived media and slowest on potato-dextrose agar (PDA) supplemented with thiamine. Sporulation was highest on Czapek-dox agar (CDA) plus biotin and lowest on PDA and PDA + thiamine. Reasons for increased susceptibility of ripe fruit are discussed. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of foliar spray of aqueous extracts of Tithonia diversifolia or Ocimum gratissimum on Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) and Alternaria leaf blight (ALB) diseases of sesame intercropped with maize. Spraying regime was at 2 weeks interval from 3 weeks after planting (WAP) until 12 WAP. Extracts of T. diversifolia or O. gratissimum reduced the incidence and severity of both diseases. CLS incidence and severity as well as defoliation was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced below what obtained in the unsprayed intercrop. ALB lesion size was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced by T. diversifolia extract at 8.0% (w/v) from 154.7 mm2 (sole crop) or 13.4 mm2 (unsprayed intercrop) to 4.9 mm2 (sprayed intercrop). T. diversifolia extract at 8.0% (w/v) enhanced higher values of grain yield/plant and incidence of normal seeds, and lower incidence of fungal infection of seeds than in the unsprayed intercrop.  相似文献

Abstract

The inhibitory effect of water extract of seed, leaf and bark of five plants, viz., Tamarindus indica, Cassia siamea, Isoberlinia doka, Dolnix regia and Cassia sieberiana was evaluated on larval hatch of Meloidogyne incognita in the laboratory. All the plant parts inhibited larval hatch of M. incoginta Percentage inhibition was higher in the seeds followed by the leaves and bark. Degree of inhibition observed, was directly related to the concentration of the extract. The standard suspensions inhibited hatching by about 97% while dilutions of S/100 inhibited larval hatch by 3%. Nematicidal activity of the plant parts of the five plants showed that C. siamea was the most effective followed by C. sieberiana, I. doka, T. indica and D. regia.  相似文献

Late leaf spot (LLS) caused by fungi Passalora personata is generally more destructive and difficult to control than early leaf spot. The aim of this study was to decipher biochemical defense mechanism in groundnut genotypes against P. personata by identifying resistance specific biomarkers and metabolic pathways induced during host–pathogen interaction. Metabolomics of non-infected and infected leaves of moderately resistant (GPBD4 and ICGV86590), resistant (KDG128 and RHRG06083) and susceptible (GG20, JL24 and TMV2) genotypes was carried out at 5 days after infection (65 days after sowing). Non-targeted metabolite analysis using GC–MS revealed total 77 metabolites including carbohydrates, sugar alcohols, amino acids, fatty acids, polyamines, phenolics, terpenes and sterols. Variable importance in projection (VIP) measure of partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) showed that resistant and moderately resistant genotypes possessed higher intensities of ribonic acid, cinnamic acid, malic acid, squalene, xylulose, galactose, fructose, glucose, β-amyrin and hydroquinone while susceptible genotypes had higher amount of gluconic acid 2-methoxime, ribo-hexose-3-ulose and gluconic acid. Heat map analysis showed that resistant genotypes had higher intensities of β-amyrin, hydroquinone in non-infected and malic acid, squalene, putrescine and 2,3,4-trihydroxybutyric acid in infected leaves. Dendrogram analysis further separated resistant genotypes in the same cluster along with infected moderately resistant genotypes. The most significant pathways identified are: linoleic acid metabolism, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, cutin, suberin and wax biosynthesis, pentose and glucuronate interconversions, starch and sucrose metabolism, stilbenoid biosynthesis and ascorbate and aldarate metabolism. Targeted metabolite analysis further confirmed that resistant genotypes possessed higher content of primary metabolites sucrose, glucose, fructose, malic acid and citric acid. Moreover, resistant genotypes possessed higher content of salicylic, coumaric, ferulic, cinnamic, gallic acid (phenolic acids) and kaempferol, quercetin and catechin (flavonols). Thus metabolites having higher accumulation in resistant genotypes can be used as biomarkers for screening of LSS resistant germplasm. These results unravel that higher amount of primary metabolites leads to stimulate the accumulation of more amounts of secondary metabolites such as phenolic acid, flavanols, stilbenes and terpenoids (squalene and β-amyrin) biosynthesis which are ultimately involved in defense mechanism against LLS pathogen.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12298-021-00985-5.  相似文献

In present study, the leaf spot disease of cotton plant emerged in the North Maharashtra region of India was reported. The fungal phytopathogen associated with inducing the leaf spot disease symptoms was isolated and characterised. The isolated fungus was identified as Corynespora torulosa (Deposition accession number, MCC-1368; Genbank accession no. MF462072) based on morphological and cultural characteristics and molecular analysis of ITS region. The pathogenicity of fungal phytopathogen was verified by Koch’s postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of incidence of leaf spot disease caused by Corynespora torulosa on cotton plant.  相似文献

Abstract

Aqueous extracts of 46 plants belonging to 32 different families of the plant kingdom were screened for antifungal activity against eight important species of Fusarium viz., Fusarium equiseti, F. moniliforme, F. semitectum, F. graminearum, F. oxysporum, F. proliferatum, F. solani and F. lateritium. The test fungi were isolated from maize, paddy and sorghum seeds collected from Mysore district, Mysore, India. Among the several plants screened only 12 plants have recorded significant antifungal activity. The antifungal activity of aqueous extracts varied among the test pathogens and was compared with that of the synthetic fungicides Blitox, Captan, Dithane M-45 and Thiram. F. proliferatum, which showed high susceptibility for the aqueous extracts, was tested using different solvent extracts viz., petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform, methanol and ethanol extracts of all the 12 plants. The results revealed that these plants could be exploited for ecofriendly management of the diseases caused by the test fungal pathogens and seed biodeterioration during storage.  相似文献

Out of seven isolates of rhizobacteria, four strains including GBO-3, INR937a, INR937b and IPC-11 were selected as inducers of systemic resistance against Cercospora carthami and tested individually for biological control of different important seed-borne fungal pathogens. The level of control achieved by each rhizobacterium varied with the pathosystem studied. The isolates GBO-3, INR937a, INR937b and IPC-11 exhibited reduced disease intensity in terms of average number of leaf lesions as compared to untreated control in protection experiments against C. carthami. Micromobilised with rhizobacterium GBO-3, INR937a, INR937b and IPC-11 safflower seeds were grown under greenhouse and challenge inoculated with C. carthami were selected for estimation of lipoxygenase, polyphenylalanine ammonia-lyase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase and β-1,3 glucanase activities were estimated spectrophotometrically. Increase in all enzymes was detected in foliar extracts from plants at different stages after challenge inoculation.  相似文献

Aqueous extracts of 48 plants belonging to six different major groups of the plant kingdom, two commercially available botanicals and different fungicides were screened for antifungal activity against Drechslera bicolor causing leaf blight of bell pepper. The test fungi were isolated from bell pepper leaves collected from Udaipur district, Rajasthan, India. Among several botanicals, maximum inhibition of fungal growth was obtained by marigold, lat jeera, lemon grass, mehandi, onion and neem, respectively. Neem oil was superior over Zatropin against the fungus. Vitavax was also found as the best fungicide followed by Quintal and Saaf against the test fungus. The results revealed that these plants could be exploited for ecofriendly management of the diseases caused by the test fungal pathogen and seed biodeterioration during storage.  相似文献

Two‐dimensional graphene has attracted significant attention due to its unique mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties. Most commonly employed methods to chemically reduce graphene oxide to graphene use hydrazine or its derivatives as the reducing agent. However, they are highly hazardous and explosive. Various phytochemicals obtained from different natural sources such as leaves and peels of a plant are used as reducing agents in the preparation of different gold, silver, copper, and platinum nanoparticles. In this study, seven plant leaf extracts (Cherry, Magnolia, Platanus, Persimmon, Pine, Maple, and Ginkgo) were compared for their abilities to reduce graphene oxide. The optimized reaction conditions for the reduction of graphene oxide were determined as follows. Type of plant: Cherry (Prunus serrulata), reaction time: 12 h, composition of the reaction mixture: 16.7% v/v of plant leaf extract in total suspension, and temperature: 95°C. The degree of reduction caused by Cherry leaf extract was analyzed by elemental analysis and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The reduction of graphene oxide was also confirmed by ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Five plant leaf extracts (Pine, Persimmon, Ginkgo, Magnolia and Platanus) were used and compared for their extracellular synthesis of metallic silver nanoparticles. Stable silver nanoparticles were formed by treating aqueous solution of AgNO3 with the plant leaf extracts as reducing agent of Ag+ to Ag0. UV-visible spectroscopy was used to monitor the quantitative formation of silver nanoparticles. Magnolia leaf broth was the best reducing agent in terms of synthesis rate and conversion to silver nanoparticles. Only 11 min was required for more than 90% conversion at the reaction temperature of 95 °C using Magnolia leaf broth. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized with inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and particle analyzer. The average particle size ranged from 15 to 500 nm. The particle size could be controlled by changing the reaction temperature, leaf broth concentration and AgNO3 concentration. This environmentally friendly method of biological silver nanoparticles production provides rates of synthesis faster or comparable to those of chemical methods and can potentially be used in various human contacting areas such as cosmetics, foods and medical applications.  相似文献

The inhibitory activity of five plant extracts viz. Artemisia absinthium L., Rumex obtusifolius L., Taraxacum officinale Weber ex Wiggers, Plantago lanceolata L. and Malva sylvestris L. were evaluated against the mycelial growth of three fungi Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler, Penicillium expansum Link ex Thom. and Mucor piriformis Fisher that cause rot diseases in fruits and vegetables resulting in low yield and quality of fruits and vegetables. Results revealed that all the concentrations of plant extracts brought about significant inhibition in the mycelial growth of these pathogenic fungi. However, the highest concentration caused maximum inhibition in the mycelial growth followed by lower concentrations of plant extracts. The extract of A. absinthium leaves at highest concentration (S) proved highly effective in inhibiting the mycelial growth of all these pathogenic fungi followed by other plant extracts. These plants thus may have potential as the new natural fungicide for management of fungal rot diseases.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in Samara for a two year period (1996 and 1997) to identify the major pod sucking bugs of soybean and to determine the effect of insecticides and frequency of application on the bugs and soybean yield. Nezara viridula L. Halydicoris ventralis Dall. Sphaerocoris annulus Fab. and Agonoscelis versicolor Fab. were the major bugs and their population were less than two bugs per plot. Also, insecticides and frequency of spray application had no significant effect on the pod sucking bugs population, percentage damage pods, seed damage index, 100 seed weight and seed yield per hectare. Hence, except the status of the pod sucking bugs population in this area of study changes significantly (possibly due to the influence of environmental factors and cropping patterns) soybean may be grown in this area with no insecticidal protection.  相似文献

Nematicidal activities of extracts from plants were assayed against Meloidogyne incognita in vitro. Leaves of six different plants were collected in and around Aligarh Muslim University Campus. Aqueous extracts of six plants were screened for egg hatchability and nematicidal activity against second stage juveniles of M. incognita in the plant pathology and nematology laboratory, AMU Aligarh. The nematode egg and juveniles were exposed 12, 24 and 48 h in (S, S/2, S/10, S/100) concentrations of plant extracts. The plant extracts of leaves of six plants species viz. Jatropha pandurifolia, Polyalthia longifolia, Wedelia chinensis, Nerium indicum, Duranta repens and Cassia fistula exhibited highly promising mortality of 99.00–72.00% after 48 h of exposure. Aqueous extracts of leaves of J. pandurifolia, P. longifolia, W. chinensis were recorded to be highly effective for inhibition of egg hatching and increasing juvenile mortality of M. incognita. There was a gradual decrease in egg hatching and increase in mortality rate of juveniles of M. incognita with increase in the concentration of leaf extract and exposure time.  相似文献

A study was made of the vegetation of three plots used in the Nigerian Man and Biosphere Research Programme for Savanna Studies. The aim is to provide detailed information on the vegetation of the plots which may possibly contribute to an understanding of factors influencing savanna structure and relative abundances of forbs, grasses and woody species. Results show that there are differences in the species composition of the plots. There are more forb species than grass species in each plot. The woody basal areas and crown areas of the plots do not depend entirely on the density but also on the size of the woody species. There are differences in herbage yield in the plots that could be attributed to differences in soil properties, species composition and level of human and animal activities between the plots.  相似文献

Field trials in which seed dressing with Apron Star 42 WS (metalaxyl-M) was tested on five pearl millet cultivars were laid at Gashua (Sahel) and Maiduguri (Sudan Savanna) for three wet seasons (1998–2000). Using the split-plot design, seed dressing and cultivars were tested in main- and sub-plots, respectively. Results showed that at each location and season, there was significantly high seedling emergence and grain yield but lower downy mildew incidence as a result of seed dressing with metalaxyl-M compared with check. Among the cultivars tested, SOSAT C-88 had significantly lower downy mildew incidence and the highest grain yield during the three seasons. Dressed with metalaxyl-M, other cultivars had lower downy mildew and higher grain yield than undressed check. It is therefore important that pearl millet should be dressed with metalaxyl as routine practice before cultivation in the arid area of Nigeria.  相似文献

This study examines the spatial and temporal variation of populations of the biological control agent (BCA) BacB, a Bacillus subtilis isolate, in the field and growth chamber in the presence of the fungus, Cercospora beticola, the causal agent of Cercospora leaf spot of sugarbeet. The use of the selective BCA support substrate β-glucan, applied at 0, 0.5, and 1.0% of the spray solution, did not influence differences in total population numbers (spores + vegetative cells) of a spontaneous rifampicin resistant isolate of BacB (Rif+) over a 14 day spray period. BacB Rif+, applied as a spore formulation, declined from 10,000 CFU/cm2 on day 0.5–100 CFU/cm2 on day 14 at the three levels of β-glucan tested. Distribution of BacB Rif+ populations was modeled on a leaf scale, with and without β-glucan. Higher populations of vegetative cells were more likely at 14 days with 1% β-glucan than with 0% β-glucan. BacB populations were more aggregated without β-glucan than with the nutrient substrate. There was no correlation between BacB density and Cercospora leaf spot disease severity, indicating that neither antibiosis nor parasitism is likely an important mechanism of disease control.  相似文献

Antipathogenic potential of 38 plants was evaluated in the form of aqueous extracts against Peronoclerospora sorghi, causing downy mildew of sorghum. Conidial suspension and plant extracts were mixed individually and allowed to stand for 5 min and then used to inoculate the host by sprout-dip method. The sprouts thus inoculated were grown in pots, and the disease incidence was observed. Eight plant extracts (Cicer areatinum, Datura metel, Croton sparsiflorus, Parthenium hysterophorus, Nerium oleander, Chromolaena odorata, Duranta repens and Oxalis latifolia) at 20% concentration performed at par with chemical fungicide (Mancozeb 75%) by exhibiting total suppression of disease incidence to 0%, when compared with 64.1% of negative control. Organic management of air-borne inoculum of downy mildew of sorghum is feasible and preferable when compared with chemical control methods, considering human and environmental health concerns. The use of water extract keeps the technology simple so that it can be directly prepared and used by the farmers. Short-listing of eight most effective water extracts would help in self-reliance of farmers, reducing their dependence on commercial products.  相似文献
