Rice yellow mottle genus Sobemovirus is an important disease of rice worldwide. Although the virus attacks both upland and lowland rice cultivars, the latter are worse infected. The disease is spread by insect vectors belonging to the families Chrysomelidae, Coccinelidae, and Tettigonidae. It is also transmitted by domestic cattle (Bos spp.), donkeys (Asinus spp.), grass rats (Arvicanthis niloticus), weed species of the family Poaceae, debris, irrigation water and through mechanical inoculation. Six strains of the virus have been reported so far. Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) incidence ranges between 5 and 100% and yield losses vary from 20 to 100%. Effective management includes the use of resistant cultivars, control of insect vectors, good sanitation and integrated pest and production management. This paper reviews the current status of the virus, with emphasis on its geographical distribution, characteristics, strains, symptomatology, diagnosis, transmission, host range and management strategies.  相似文献

Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is specific to Africa and has been reported in some countries in East Africa and almost all the countries in West Africa. At present, it is undoubtedly the most important disease of rice in Tanzania. It was first reported in the 1980's. It has spread fast and is now found in almost all the rice growing areas. In view of the increasing incidence and importance of RYMV on rice production in Tanzania, studies on the epidemiology of the disease were initiated in order to find ways of controlling the disease. Transmission studies were carried out on seventy‐seven species of beetles and grasshoppers collected from different rice growing locations to determine vector identity. Four vectors have been identified (three chrysomelids; Dactylispa sp., Chaetocnema sp. and Chaetocnema pulla) and one tetrigid grasshopper. The wide distribution of Chaetocnema spp. in the RYMV endemic areas suggests that the species are the most important vectors responsible for infections in these areas.  相似文献

Abstract The parasitoid Asecodes mento (Walker, 1839) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is the most important biocontrol agent of the strawberry leaf beetle Galerucella tenella (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in northern Europe. Here, I investigated whether natural parasitism in organic strawberry plantations was affected by the presence of the alternative host plant meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), and whether parasitism rates differed between plantations of different ages (6 to 79 years). I also investigated whether parasitoid brood size, body size and sex ratio differed between the two host plants in the field. Parasitism was very low (0%) in newly established plantations and increased to a plateau (~40%) in fields where strawberries had been grown for approximately 20 years or longer. Such an extended colonization process is unacceptable for commercial growers. It would thus be desirable to find a method to catalyze parasitoid population buildup in young plantations. Parasitoid brood sizes were larger in beetles collected from meadowsweet, while body size and sex ratio did not differ between parasitoids collected from the two plants. These findings suggest that meadowsweet can export parasitoids to neighboring strawberry fields. Although this is a possibility, I did not find any significant differences in parasitism rates between isolated strawberry fields and fields adjacent to meadowsweet stands, indicating that effects of local vegetation are small on parasitism rates. Releasing parasitoids in newly established strawberry plantations may be a better strategy for quickly obtaining high parasitism than intercropping with meadowsweet.  相似文献

The cereal leaf beetle (CLB), Oulema melanopus (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is an invasive pest in North America recently reported in the Canadian Prairies. We performed a series of laboratory assays to identify potential predators and a field study to quantify predation of CLB eggs. In no-choice Petri dish assays, ground beetles (Carabidae), rove beetles (Staphylinidae), and several common lady beetle species (Coccinellidae) were the most consistent predators of eggs and larvae. Nabis spp. (Hemiptera: Nabidae) and wolf spiders (Araneae: Lycosidae) consumed many larvae, but did not consume eggs. Hippodamia spp., Coccinella septempunctata (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger) (Coleoptera: Carabidae) also fed on CLB eggs on potted plants when an alternative food source was available, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). In our field study, we found an average of 24.5% of sentinel eggs disappeared over a 24?h period, likely due to predation. Our results suggest that generalist predators can play an important role in the biological control of CLB, and warrant further study.  相似文献

Cicindela (Calochroa) whithilli (Hope) and Cicindela (Calochroa) flavomaculata Hope (Cicindelidae: Coleoptera) are seasonally dominant predatory insects in the cultivated, and irrigated rice paddy fields of the South Indian peninsula. While studying the feeding ecology of these tiger beetles in rice paddy agro‐ecosystems in Sringeri area of the central Western Ghats, we examined their potential as biocontrols on the major rice paddy pest populations available in this region. Earthworms and tadpoles were significant prey organisms during the early cultivation period, while other traditional prey organisms like ants and spiders (mainly wolf and jumping spiders) were more common as prey organisms toward the mid‐season. The results showed that the feeding fauna of tiger beetles can extend to prey items beyond arthropods, to include vertebrates. Cicindela (Calochroa) duponti Dejean is another common species that occurs abundantly in the Areca orchards and on the bunds that separate rice paddy fields from adjacent uncultivated lands. We performed laboratory tests to determine the feeding guild of these beetles, and to investigate their possible role as a predator of the rice paddy pests. Although preliminary in nature, the results suggest that both C. whithilli and C. flavomaculata are ineffective as biocontrol agents of rice paddy agro‐ecosystems. They appear to have only a marginal impact on the larvae of Leptocorisa acuta, a major insect pest of paddy rice, but further experimental and observational studies are needed to firmly establish the significance of this observation.  相似文献

Abstract

Indicators of diversity (population density, relative number of species, percentage of singletons, evenness) of ground beetles (Carabidae) and rove beetles (Staphylinidae) in rain-fed rice fields were assessed between 1995 and 1999 at Garoua in the Benue valley in North Cameroon. A total of 4369 individuals belonging to 44 species of carabids and 2109 staphylinids in 27 species were caught by means of pitfall traps. Among the carabids, five species: Menigius lucidus var. strigiceps Qued., Chlaeniostenus denticulatus elatus Erichson, Lissauchenius venator (Laferté), Pheropsophus marginatus Dej. and Abacetus crenulatus Dej. in decreasing order, were dominant. In the staphylinid group, the species Paederus sabaeus Erichson was the most common, followed by Stenus ravus Puthz and Stenus (mendicus) senegalensis Bernhauer. Shannon-Weiner and evenness indices varied marginally from year to year. Diversity values remained relatively low ( < 2.8) among each group of beetles, which indicated that paddy fields were moderately populated by this group of polyphagous predators. Features of predacious soil surface-dwelling beetles in West African rice ecosystems are discussed in the light of Integrated Pest Management concepts.  相似文献

Rotated and non-rotated commercial potato fields were sampled intensively to follow Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), colonization and subsequent oviposition patterns in the spring of 1990 and 1991. Maximum densities of colonizing adults ranged from 0 to 14,891/ha and maximum egg mass densities ranged from 0 to 48,451/ha. Crop rotation generally resulted in lower potato beetle populations. Regardless of crop rotation management practices, colonization of fields planted in potatoes began at field edges and progressed inward in all fields for both years. Management of potato beetles is discussed in light of these findings.  相似文献

Reducing the use of insecticides is an important issue for agriculture today. Sowing wildflower strips along field margins or within crops represents a promising tool to support natural enemy populations in agricultural landscapes and, thus, enhance conservation biological control. However, it is important to sow appropriate flower species that attract natural enemies efficiently. The presence of prey and hosts may also guide natural enemies to wildflower strips, potentially preventing them from migrating into adjacent crops. Here, we assessed how seven flower traits, along with the abundance of pollen beetles (Meligethes spp., Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and true weevils (Ceutorhynchus spp., Coleoptera: Curculionidae), affect the density of parasitoids of these two coleopterans in wildflower strips sown in an oilseed rape field in Gembloux (Belgium). Only flower traits, not host (i.e. pollen beetles and true weevils) abundance, significantly affected the density of parasitoids. Flower colour, ultraviolet reflectance and nectar availability were the main drivers affecting parasitoids. These results demonstrate how parasitoids of oilseed rape pests react to flower cues under field conditions. Similar analyses on the pests and natural enemies of other crops are expected to help to develop perennial flower mixtures able to enhance biological control throughout a rotation system.  相似文献

Transgenic silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) lines were produced in order to modify lignin biosynthesis. These lines carry COMT (caffeate/5-hydroxyferulate O-methyltransferase) gene from Populus tremuloides driven by constitutive promoter 35S CaMV (cauliflower mosaic virus) or UbB1 (ubiquitin promoter from sunflower). The decreased syringyl/guaiacyl (S/G) ratio was found in stem and leaf lignin of 35S CaMV-PtCOMT transgenic silver birch lines when compared to non-transformed control or UbB1–PtCOMT lines. In controlled feeding experiments the leaves of transgenic birch lines as well as controls were fed to insect herbivores common in boreal environment, i.e., larvae of Aethalura punctulata, Cleora cinctaria and Trichopteryx carpinata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) as well as the adults of birch leaf-feeding beetles Agelastica alni (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Phyllobius spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). The feeding preferences of these herbivores differed in some cases among the tested birch lines, but these differences could not be directly associated to lignin modification. They could as well be explained by other characteristics of leaves, either natural or caused by transgene site effects. Growth performance of lepidopteran larvae fed on transgenic or control leaves did not differ significantly.  相似文献

The parasitoid Anaphes flavipes (Foerster) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is a gregarious egg parasitoid which is widely used in biological control against important crop pest beetles of the genus Oulema (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Here, we present the first experimental examination of the influence of adult feeding and timing of host exposure on the longevity and fertility of this parasitoid. We confirmed a positive effect of adult feeding on longevity of both sexes. Fed parasitoids lived 3× longer than unfed ones. On the other hand, adult feeding and feeding time had no effect on female fertility. The number of hatched offspring was not increased by adult feeding, which suggests that the parasitoid emerges with already mature ovaries (proovigenic type). However, the fertility of fed females was strongly influenced by the timing of host egg exposure. By providing distinct groups of parasitoids with host eggs at different times, we were able to show lower fertility of fed females that had been offered host eggs more than 24 h after hatching. Our results thus show that the parasitoid's fertility is determined by her age at the time of parasitization rather than by feeding.  相似文献

The cereal leaf beetle (CLB), Oulema melanopus L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a major pest of cereal crops that has recently been reported in western Canada. We developed a set of primers to detect CLB DNA in the gut of six common predator taxa in wheat fields: lady beetles (20 positives of 143 individuals), nabid bugs (73 positives of 206 individuals), and wolf spiders (2 positives of 25 individuals). Nabis americoferus Carayon (Hemiptera: Nabidae) and Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were the most abundant predators in cereal fields, with 0.35 and 0.05 proportion of samples positive for CLB DNA, respectively. The prey DNA half-lives were used to adjust the estimates for N. americoferus to 0.22, due to its longer DNA detectability relative to C. septempunctata. Overall, Hippodamia parenthesis (Say) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) had the highest proportion of positives at 0.43. There was a positive association between CLB abundance and proportion of N. americoferus and C. septempunctata positives for CLB DNA. This study highlights the contribution of generalist predators to CLB mortality and their important role in integrated management for CLB. Furthermore, we provide a molecular tool that can be used to identify predators of CLB and predation frequency in agricultural fields .  相似文献

Insect pest management in wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) usually involves insecticidal sprays, which may have detrimental effects on non‐target beneficial insects. Dogbane beetle (Chrysochus auratus Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) feeds almost exclusively on spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium L.), an increasing weed problem in wild blueberry production. Because C. auratus is an important natural enemy of spreading dogbane, we assessed its susceptibility to several insecticides it may be exposed to during insect pest management. In laboratory bioassays, we found adult dogbane beetles were highly susceptible to field rates of phosmet (Imidan) and acetamiprid (Assail) by direct topical contact and ingestion of treated foliage, whereas no mortality was seen with spirotetramat (Movento) and chlorantraniliprole (Altacor). Topical applications of spinetoram (Delegate) did not cause significant mortality of beetles, but high mortality to beetles was found when they ingested spinetoram‐treated foliage. The results suggest that while some insecticides used in blueberry management will be hazardous to C. auratus, options are available that will cause little harm to this natural enemy.  相似文献

Dropleg sprayers apply pesticides below the flower horizon of oilseed rape plants and thus reduce unwanted side effects on pollinating insects. Whether this technique benefits parasitoids of seed and pollen feeding insect pests has not been studied earlier. To answer this question, we first assessed the vertical distribution of pests and parasitoids using a portable aspirator. In addition, parasitism rates of pollen beetle, Brassicogethes aeneus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), by the larval parasitoid Tersilochus heterocerus Thomson (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) were compared in conventional and dropleg sprayed fields over four years (2016–2019), using the neonicotinoids thiacloprid and acetamiprid. Our results show that seed and pollen feeders were mainly found in the flowering canopy, while the predominant location of parasitoids was species-specific. Among pollen beetle parasitoids, Phradis interstitialis Thomson (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was more abundant below flowering canopy (63% of total catch), whereas T. heterocerus was mainly caught in the flowering canopy (84% of total catch). In the spraying experiments, average parasitism rates of pollen beetles by T. heterocerus ranged between 55 and 82% in the untreated controls. In the dropleg spray treatments, parasitism rates did not differ significantly from control levels, with the exception of thiacloprid application in 2019. In contrast, conventional spray applications resulted in a reduction of parasitism rates by up to 37% compared to the control for at least one of the insecticides in three out of four years. The impact of conventional application differed between years, which may be explained by the temporal coincidence between spray application and the immigration of parasitoids into the crop. We conclude that dropleg spraying exerts lower non-target effects on the main biological control agent of pollen beetle.

Biological control research often focuses on the ability of predators to reduce pest densities and protect crops through consumption. Less studied is their ability to protect crops by altering pest behaviour (non‐consumptive effects). Lab experiments were conducted to test predation rates of striped cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittatum; Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and spotted cucumber beetles (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi; Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) by large (>10 mm) wolf spiders (Araneae: Lycosidae). Field experiments were conducted to examine how the physical presence and/or cues of spiders impact the behaviour and mortality of A. vittatum (specialist) and D. undecimpunctata (generalist) cucumber beetles as well as growth and damage of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus; Cucurbitaceae). A. vittatum and D. undecimpunctata adults were added to caged cucumber plants without a spider, with spider cues only (spider removed before beetle inclusion), with spider only (spider introduced to plants immediately before beetle inclusion), and with spiders and their cues present (spiders introduced 24 hr in advance of beetle inclusion). A. vittatum responded to spider cues primarily by emigrating from plants. Contrarily, D. undecimpunctata did not display obvious responses, such as reduced feeding or increased emigration, to spider foraging and/or cues. Actively foraging lycosids increased A. vittatum mortality and reduced densities of D. undecimpunctata in the field when cucumber plants were flowering. This study highlights how non‐consumptive and consumptive effects can play a role in modifying pest populations, and how these effects can vary across species and plant growth stages.  相似文献

The yearly timing of the life cycle of a parasitoid is a key element of its life‐history strategy. I examine here factors influencing the expression of partial bivoltinism in Tetrastichus julis Walker (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a specialist parasitoid introduced to North America to attack its univoltine host, the cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). The varying tendency was assessed of individuals of this gregarious larval parasitoid to either emerge as adults in the same summer they mature, or to enter diapause to emerge the following year. Parasitized hosts were obtained by rearing cereal leaf beetles collected as mature larvae from grain fields in northern Utah (western USA) throughout the growing seasons in 2013 and 2014. Cocoons spun by these beetles were held to determine patterns over the spring and summer in the tendency of the parasitoid to forgo larval diapause. A high percentage (nearly 90% in 2013) of parasitoid individuals were found to forgo diapause and emerge in the same summer from earliest maturing hosts. This percentage rapidly declined to 20% or less of individuals forgoing diapause and emerging from cocoons as the summer advanced. The percentage of parasitoid individuals forgoing diapause increased significantly at a given time of season (early or late) as the number of conspecifics with which an individual shared a host larva increased. These results may reflect a trade‐off for individual parasitoids in which greater success in finding – and ovipositing in – host larvae the following spring vs. in summer, is countered by reduced survivorship in diapausing over the winter vs. emerging in the same summer in which the parasitoid matures. Expression of partial bivoltinism of T. julis, as affected strongly by both season and within‐host density, results in high rates of parasitism of cereal leaf beetles both early and late in the season.  相似文献

Infection of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) with the bacterial pathogen Erwinia tracheiphila E. F. Smith causes vascular wilt disease in leaves, which may alter the suitability of the host plant for insects and other pathogens. In this study, densities of spotted (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber) and striped (Acalymma vittata (Fab.) cucumber beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) were higher on wilted leaves of mature and seedling field plants inoculated with E. tracheiphila. Bacterial infection or feeding by D. undecimpunctata howardii beetles increased total peroxidase enzyme activity in inoculated or infested leaves of greenhouse seedlings, but only beetle feeding induced higher activities in untreated systemic leaves on the same plants. Neither bacterial infection nor beetle infestation led to the development of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum orbiculare (Berk & Mont.) Arx. Susceptibility to this fungus was greater on E. tracheiphila-infected plants than on controls. The positive association between leaf wilt symptom development and beetle occurrence thus occurs in the presence of an oxidative but not anti-pathogenic response induced by both the insect and the pathogen.  相似文献

  • 1 New data on the phylogeny of the braconid subfamily Euphorinae supports the hypothesis that parasitism of adult insects by Euphorinae originated during parasitism of Chrysomelidae, a group whose larvae are ecologically coincident with adults.
  • 2 Evolution of the habit of attacking the adult stage opened a new adaptive zone; subsequently the Euphorinae have diversified on to a phylogenetically greater variety of hosts than any other braconid subfamily.
  • 3 Parasitism of eumastacid grasshoppers evolved from beetle parasitism in the tribe Perilitini.
  • 4 The tribe Euphorini shows the greatest diversity of hosts utilized. Most attack Heteroptera; however, Chrysopopthorus diversified on to adult Chrysopidae, Euphoriella on to Psocoptera, and Cryptoxilos on to Scolytidae.
  • 5 Parasitism of bark beetles (Scolytidae) has evolved independently in three genera: Cosmophorus, Cryptoxilos and Ropalophorus. This is the most specialized form of beetle parasitism by euphorines, since it involves direct parasitism of concealed hosts.

This is consistent with current theory of host-location by means of host-produced kairomones and visual cues.

Analysis of 135 stomach samples of Black Korhaans Eupodotis afra collected over a five year period showed this species to be omnivorous. More than two-thirds of the food items consisted of animal matter, mostly arthropods, the rest being plant material, mostly seeds. Three insect taxa, Isoptera (almost exclusively Hodotermes mossambicus), Coleoptera (largely Curculionidae beetles) and Orthoptera made up the bulk of the diet. Large numbers of harvester termites and grasshoppers were taken when these were available. The plant material in the diet reflects the ground-feeding habits of the birds in open and dry but often disturbed habitats.  相似文献
