Field surveys were conducted during 2005 to 2007 to assess the species diversity of stem borer parasitoids in cultivated and natural habitats in four agroecological zones in Kenya. In total, 33 parasitoid species were recovered, of which 18 parasitized six stem borer species feeding on cereal crops, while 27 parasitized 21 stem borer species feeding on 19 wild host plant species. The most common parasitoids in cultivated habitats were Cotesia flavipes Cameron, Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron), Pediobius furvus Gahan and the tachinid Siphona sp., whereas in natural habitats, Siphona sp. was the most common. The majority of parasitoids were stenophagous species; only five species –Cotesia sp., Enicospilus ruscus Gauld and Mitchell, Pristomerus nr. bullis, Sturmiopsis parasitica (Curran) and Syzeuctus ruberrimus Benoit – were monophagous. In both cultivated and natural habitats, parasitoid species diversity was highest on the most dominant stem borers Busseola spp. and Chilo spp. On cereal crops, parasitoid diversity was highest on maize and among wild host plants, it was highest on Setaria spp. The ingress‐and‐sting attack method was the most common strategy used by parasitoids in both habitats. In all agroecological zones, parasitoid species diversity was significantly higher in natural than in cultivated habitats. Furthermore, the majority of parasitoid species were common to both cultivated and natural habitats. It was concluded that natural habitats surrounding cereal crops serve as refugia for sustaining the diversity of stem borer parasitoids from adjacent cereal fields.  相似文献

A new and morphologically very distinct species of Pediobius from Costa Rica is described. The new species (P. nishidai) is unique among New World species of Pediobius in having the propodeum elongated and extended backwards (i.e. with an elongated nucha). The entire type series (15 females, two males) was reared from a single prepupa of Epilachna mexicana and it has been concluded that the new Pediobius species is a gregarious endoparasitoid that pupates inside its host. The possible use of this new species as a biological control agent against "the Mexican bean beetle" (E. varivestis) should be tested.  相似文献

1. The study reported here examined growth and developmental interactions between the gregarious larval koinobiont endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and two of its hosts that vary considerably in growth potential: Pieris rapae and the larger P. brassicae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). At pupation, healthy larvae of P. brassicae are over twice as large, in terms of fresh body mass, as those of P. rapae. 2. Clutch size of C. glomerata was manipulated artificially, and the relationship between parasitoid burden and the maximum weight of the parasitised host (= host–parasitoid complex) was measured. In both hosts, the maximum complex weight was correlated positively with parasitoid burden. Compared with unparasitised hosts, however, the growth of P. rapae was increased at significantly lower parasitoid burdens than in P. brassicae. Emerging wasp size was correlated negatively with parasitoid burden in both host species, whereas development time was less affected. 3. After larval parasitoid egress, the weight of the host carcass increased slightly, but not significantly, with parasitoid burden, although there was a strong correlation between the proportion of host mass consumed by C. glomerata larvae during development and parasitoid burden. 4. Clutch size was generally correlated positively with instar parasitised in both hosts, and greater in P. brassicae than in P. rapae. Sex ratios were much more female biased in L1 and L2 P. rapae than in all other host classes. Adult parasitoid size was correlated inversely with host instar at parasitism, and wasps emerging from P. brassicae were larger, and completed development faster, than conspecifics emerging from P. rapae. 5. The data reveal that parasitism by C. glomerata has profound species‐specific effects on the growth of both host species. Consequently, optimality models in which host quality is often based on host size at parasitism or unparasitised growth potential may have little utility in describing the development of gregarious koinobiont endoparasitoids. The results of this investigation are discussed in relation to the potential effectiveness of gregarious koinobionts in biological control programmes.  相似文献

Abstract

The present work was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Trichogramma evanescens (Westwood) in controlling the grape berry moth Lobesia botrana (Schiff) in two grape farms, in El-Beheira and El-Gharbia Governorates, northern Egypt during 2004 and 2005 seasons. T. evanescens was mass produced on Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) eggs in the National Research Centre in Egypt. The horizontal and vertical searching activity of T. evanescens was studied to determine the proper way of distributing the Trichogramma cards in vineyards. Field experiments were also conducted to evaluate T. evanescens efficacy to control L. botrana on a large scale. Parasitism by T. evanescens on L. botrana eggs was greatly affected with the horizontal or vertical distance from the release points as well as with the rate of release. Parasitism reached over 97% and the percentage of reduction in damage caused by the pest reached 96.8% in treated plots. A significant increase in the crop was achieved in treated plots. T. evanescens could be a potential candidate for biological control of the grape moth in vineyards.  相似文献

The Mediterranean black scale, Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Homoptera: Coccidae) is the most important pest of olive in Egypt. Indigenous parasitoid Metaphycus lounsburyi (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) from different localities in Egypt, were manipulated, reared and mass produced for classical biological control in Egypt, more than 193130 parasitoids were released. Several releases were made between May 1999 to April 2001. Increases of the parasitism from 17.4 to 42.0 and from 6.4 to 19.2 during the first year (1999–2000) and the second year (2000–2001), respectively in the Northern Coast. This parasitoid became established in some of the release sites in El-Arish and Matruh Governorates.  相似文献

We report experiments using two closely related species of alysiine braconids directed at understanding how gregarious development evolved in one subfamily of parasitoid wasps. Theoretical models predict that once siblicide between parasitoid wasps has evolved, it can only be lost under stringent conditions, making the transition from solitary to gregarious development exiguous. Phylogenetic studies indicate, however, that gregariousness has independently arisen on numerous occasions. New theoretical models have demonstrated that if gregarious development involves reductions in larval mobility, rather than a lack of fighting ability (as in the older models), the evolution of gregariousness is much more likely. We tested the predictions of the older tolerance models (gregariousness based on non-fighting larval phenotypes) and the reduced mobility models (gregariousness based on non-searching larval phenotypes) by observing larval movement and the outcome of interspecific competition between Aphaereta genevensis (solitary) and A. pallipes (gregarious) under multiparasitism. Differences in larval mobility matched the prediction of the reduced mobility model of gregarious development, with the solitary A. genevensis having larvae that are much more mobile. The proportion of hosts producing the solitary species significantly declined after subsequent exposure to females of the gregarious species. This contradicts the prediction of the older models (fighting vs non-fighting phenotypes), under which any competitive interactions between solitary and gregarious larvae will result in a highly asymmetrical outcome, as the solitary species should be competitively superior. The observed outcome of interspecific competition offers evidence, with respect to this subfamily, in favour of the new models (searching vs non-searching phenotypes).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate influence of transgenic and commercial corn hybrids on the behaviour and feeding activity of the pink corn borer (Sesamia cretica Led.). Food consumption was different according to feeding period and hybrids. The feeding ratio of S. cretica on maize hybrids was significantly different between transgenic and commercial hybrids. It appears from the results of this experiment that the antifeeeding activity of transgenic hybrids had greater effect than commercial hybrids one. Thus, it is apparent from these results that transgenic maize was unsuitable because larvae were dead, but the other commercial hybrids were preferable. It can be concluded from the data that the feeding on different maize hybrids had different effects on certain biological aspects of pink corn borer. The impact of untreated Bt. Corn; 0.5% water emulsion of Neem-Azal-T/S and 0.005% water emulsion of Chlorpyrifos insecticides on the behaviour and feeding activity of the pink corn borer S. cretica has been studied. The data showed that larvae stopped feeding from the time when it was fed on untreated Bt. corn or/and non Bt. Corn treated with NeemAzal-T/S 0.5%. The results indicated that Bt. corn, NeemAzal-T/S 0.5% and Chlorphan 48% (0.005%) possessed the toxic effect on pink corn borer S. cretica. According to results, it could be stated that the tested compounds can play an important role in controlling the pink corn borer.  相似文献

The successful development of parasitoids of herbivores depends on the quality of their host, which is often affected by the host plant. Therefore, a parasitoid’s oviposition decisions will directly depend on the host, but also on plant quality. Here, we investigated the direct effects of host species and the indirect effects of the host’s food plant on the oviposition decisions and performance of the gregarious ectoparasitoid Euplectrus platyhypenae Howard (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). With a series of no‐choice experiments, we determined the oviposition and performance of the parasitoid on: (1) two caterpillar species, fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda JE Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and velvet armyworm, Spodoptera latifascia Walker, reared on maize (Zea mays L., Poaceae), (2) the same caterpillars reared on maize, bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Fabaceae), or squash (Cucurbita pepo L., Cucurbitaceae) leaves, and (3) S. latifascia caterpillars reared on leaves of wild and cultivated lima bean, Phaseolus lunatus L. All these insects and plants originate from Mesoamerica where they have coexisted for thousands of years in the traditional agricultural system known as Milpa in which maize, beans, and squash are planted together. We found that the preferred and best combination of host and host plant for parasitoid performance was S. frugiperda on maize. Parasitoids laid larger clutches, had higher survival, and more females and larger adults emerged from S. frugiperda reared on maize. However, when both caterpillar species were reared on squash, S. latifascia was the better host. Contrary to the literature, S. frugiperda was not able to develop on bean plants. Results from the lima bean experiment showed that parasitoid performance was best when S. latifascia was reared on leaves of cultivated compared to wild lima bean. These findings are discussed in the context of mixed cropping in which the ability of generalist parasitoids to switch among hosts and host plant species could be advantageous for pest management.  相似文献

This study was conducted on Bt and normal maize hybrids during two successive sowing dates, early and late summer plantation. The Sesamia cretica larvae were observed for the first time on first week of April on different commercial maize hybrids. While there was no larva/plant on transgenic maize hybrids, YieldGard and Ageeb-YG, while larvae were found on last week of July by a very little number on maize hybrids for late one. In Early summer planting date showed highly significant differences in reduction percent, between tested compounds and control one, in the pink corn borer population. The bio-residual activity of the NeemAzal-T/S 0.5% on TWC310 was significantly less pronounced, i.e. 75.5%, than other tested ones; the highest percentage of reduction, 86.6%, was achieved by Chlorophan 0.005% on SC2031, followed by NeemAzal-T/S 0.5% on SC2031 83.5% and Chlorophan 0.005% on SC2030 83.4%, respectively. Also the average reduction percentage of S. cretica larvae differed significantly from 69.6%, on NeemAzal-T/S SC2031, to 83.0%, on Chlorophan SC2031, in the late summer planting. The different treatments had positive effects on maize yield in the two planting dates. In the first plantation date, the increased rate of control ranged from 1.04 to 1.24, when NeemAzal-T/S acted on TWC310 and transgenic IYG, respectively. And in the second plantation date, rate of control obtained was 1.06–1.30, when NeemAzal-T/S acted on SC 2031 and transgenic IYG, respectively. The tested compounds played an important role in controlling the pink corn borer insect, S. cretica, and this study suggests that Cry 1Ab-expressing corn hybrids would provide a great value as a component of corn IPM in Egypt.  相似文献

One egg parasite, 7 larval parasites, 2 pupal parasites and 3 larval hyperparasites were recorded parasitizing the spotted stalk borer,Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) on maize and grain sorghum in South Africa.Trichogrammatoidea lutea Girault [Trichogrammatidae] parasitized eggs ofC. partellus mainly in mid-summer. The larval parasites were active throughout the season with occasional peaks of up to 75% parasitism.Apanteles sesamiae Cameron [Braconidae], proved to be the most abundant larval parasite. It was recorded fromca. 93% of parasitized larvae but its efficiency was reduced by the hyperparasite,Aphanogmus fijiensis (Ferriére) [Ceraphronidae], which reached sometimes up to 100% parasitism on cocoons ofA. sesamiae. The efficiency ofIphiaulax sp. [Braconidae], the 2nd most abundant larval parasite, was also hindered by the hyperparasite,Eurytoma sp. [Eurytomidae] Pupal parasites were sometimes very abundant reaching up to 100% parasitism without any interference by hyperparasites. The fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae), is an invasive and important pest in China. Investigations on insect natural enemies have been conducted from 1996 to 1999 in five provinces and one municipality of China in order to select effective species for biological control. Two carabid predators (Coleoptera) and 25 parasitoid species were found, among which 23 were parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera), including five hyperparasitic species and two tachinid flies (Diptera). The two carabids preyed on young larvae inside webs, two braconid wasps parasitized larvae, and 18 parasitoid species attacked the fall webworm during the pupal and/or 'larval-pupal' stages. Among these parasitoids, there were one genus and nine species that are new to science and four species new to China, which were described and published by the senior author Yang. The average parasitism rates of fall webworm pupae were 25.8% and 16.1% in the overwintering generation and the first generation (summer generation), respectively. These findings reveal that these natural enemies play an important role in the natural control of the pest. Chouioia cunea Yang (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a gregarious pupal endo-parasitoid, was recommended as a promising biological control agent against the fall webworm in China.  相似文献

Summary Pteromalus puparum is a gregarious parasitoid of lepidopterous pupae. To determine in which phase of a host outbreak superparasitism occurs, field investigations were carried out on seasonal prevalence of the host, Papilio xuhtus, and parasitism by P. puparum in a citrus grove in Fukuoka, Japan in 1974. Host pupation occurred from May to November and the parasitoid attacked the host throughout this period. Pupal density increased rapidly after mid-August and the percentage parasitism decreased during this period. A high level of parasitism was attained after one or more parasitoid generations in mid-September. The superparasitism was observed after mid-September when the parasitoid attained extremely high density, and resulted in an increase in the proportion of males, high mortality, and a decrease in the size of the progeny.  相似文献

The Eucalyptus longhorned borer, Phoracantha semipunctata (F.), is native to Australia, but it has been introduced without its natural enemies into many parts of the world in which its Eucalyptus spp. host has been planted. The beetle has developed large populations in these novel habitats and has been responsible for the mortality of large numbers of trees. Although there is a considerable catalogue of the parasitoids of the beetle in Australia, limited ecological information on the assemblage of parasitoids attacking P. semipunctata is available. We removed bark from 40 felled trees, recorded gallery width and bark thickness over parasitized larvae, and removed all parasitoids. Adult size, sex, and species were recorded when the parasitoid pupae eclosed. Syngaster lepidus Brullè, Jarra phoracantha Austin, Quicke, and Marsh, J. maculipennis Austin, Quicke, and Marsh, and J. painei Austin and Dangerfield were most commonly collected. The solitary parasitoid S. lepidus preferred smaller larvae than did the gregarious Jarra spp. The two species with shorter ovipositors, J. maculipennis and J. painei, parasitized larvae under thinner bark than did the other two species with longer ovipositors. There was a significant positive correlation between host larval size and number of parasitoid pupae of the gregarious species. Also, there was a significant positive correlation between host larval size and parasitoid adult size. The ecological relationships between this assemblage of parasitoids and their beetle host may be useful in establishing an effective biological control program.  相似文献

An investigation was undertaken to record the influence of host age on the reproductive performance of Nesolynx thymus (Hymenoptera:Eulophidae). This is an indigenous, gregarious, ecto-pupal parasitoid of certain dipteran insects, including the tachinid fly, Exorista bombycis (Louis) which is a well-known endo-larval parasitoid of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. Each gravid N. thymus female was allowed to parasitise 1–4-day-old puparia of Musca domestica L. for 2 days at a parasitoid–host ratio of 1:20. The parasitised host puparia were observed for progeny recovery, sex ratio, female longevity and fitness (adult size). In addition, reproductive performance of the parasitoid progeny was assessed by allowing its females to parasitise for 2 days, 3-day-old puparia of E. bombycis at a parasitoid–host ratio of 1:4. There was a significant negative correlation between host age and parasitisation rate, parasitoid developmental duration, sex ratio and female longevity while the correlation was positive between host age and parasitoid recovery per host puparium. Similarly, negative correlation was observed between host age and morphometric parameters (body length, head width and wing span of male and female and length and width of female abdomen) of the progeny adults. Host age did not have any impact on the reproductive performance of progeny adults when allowed to parasitise puparia of E. bombycis.  相似文献

Gregarious koinobiont parasitoids attacking a range of host sizes have evolved several mechanisms to adapt to variable host resources, including the regulation of host growth, flexibility in larval development rate, and adjustment of clutch size. We investigated whether the first two mechanisms are involved in responses of the specialist gregarious parasitoid Microplitis tristis Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to differences in the larval weight and parasitoid load of its host Hadena bicruris Hufn. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). In addition, we examined the effects of parasitism on food consumption by the host. Parasitoids were offered caterpillars of different weight from all five instars, and parasitoid fitness correlates, including survival, development time, and cocoon weight, were recorded. Furthermore, several host growth parameters and food consumption of parasitized and unparasitized hosts were measured. Our results show that M. tristis responds to different host weights by regulating host growth and by adjusting larval development rate. In hosts with small weights, development time was increased, but the increase was insufficient to prevent a reduction in cocoon weight, and as a result parasitoids experienced a lower chance of successful eclosion. Cocoon weight was negatively affected by parasitoid load, even though host growth was positively affected by parasitoid load, especially in hosts with small weights. Later instars were more optimal for growth and development of M. tristis than early instars, which might reflect an adaptation to the life‐history of the host, whose early instars are usually concealed and inaccessible for parasitism on its food plant, Silene latifolia Krause (Caryophyllaceae). Parasitism by M. tristis greatly reduced total host food consumption for all instar stages. Whether plants can benefit directly from the attraction of gregarious koinobiont parasitoids of their herbivores is a subject of current debate. Our results indicate that, in this system, the attraction of a gregarious koinobiont parasitoid can directly benefit the plant by reducing the number of seeds destroyed by the herbivore.  相似文献

Abstract The larvae of most endoparasitoid wasps consume virtually all host tissues before pupation. However, in some clades, the parasitoid larvae primarily consume haemolymph and fat body and emerge through the side of the host, which remains alive and active for up to several days. The evolutionary significance of this host‐usage strategy has attracted attention in recent years. Recent empirical studies suggest that the surviving larva guards the parasitoid broods against natural enemies such as predators and hyperparasitoids. Known as the ‘usurpation hypothesis’, the surviving larvae bite, regurgitate fluids from the gut, and thrash the head capsule when disturbed. In the present study, the ‘usurpation hypothesis’ is tested in the association involving Manduca sexta, its parasitoid Cotesia congregata, and a secondary hyperparasitoid Lysibia nana. Percentage parasitoid survival is higher and hyperparasitism lower when cocoons of C. congregata are attached to the dorsum of M. sexta caterpillars. Fat body contents in several associations involving solitary and gregarious parasitoids feeding on haemolymph and fat body are also compared. The amount of fat body retained in parasitized caterpillars varies considerably from one association to another. In M. sexta and Pieris brassicae, considerable amounts of fat body remain after parasitoid emergence whereas, in Cotesia kariyai and Cotesia rufricus, virtually all of the fat body is consumed by the parsasitoid larvae. The length of post‐egression survival of parasitized caterpillars differs considerably in several tested associations. In Pseudeletia separata, most larvae die within a few hours of parasitoid emergence whereas, in M. sexta, parasitized larvae live up to 2 weeks after parasitoid emergence. Larvae in other associations parasitized by gregarious and solitary endoparasitoids live for intermediate periods. The results are discussed in relation to the adaptive significance of different feeding strategies of immature parasitoids and of the costs and benefits of retaining the parasitized caterpillar in close proximity with the parasitoid cocoons.  相似文献

Maize yellow stripe virus (MYSV), associated with tenuivirus-like filaments, is transmitted in a persistent manner by the leafhopper Cicadulina chinai. In this vector, MYSV acquisition and inoculation threshold times were 30 min each, latent period ranged from 4.5 to 8 days depending on temperature (14-25 °C), and retention periods were as long as 27 days. Up to 26 % of C, chinai collected from maize fields in Giza, Egypt, during September and October 1985 were naturally infective with MYSV. Two symptom-types (fine and coarse stripe) appeared on experimentally infected plants, usually on separate leaves of the same plant. However, these two symptom-types could not be isolated on separate plants through transmission by single C. chinai leafhoppers. MYSV was transmitted by nymphs and adults of C. chinai from maize to maize, wheat and barley, and from wheat to maize plants. Up to 6 % of the wheat plants examined in Naga Hamadi (Southern Egypt) in February 1986, were naturally infected. It is suggested that wheat, barley and possibly graminaceous weeds may serve as winter hosts or reservoirs for MYSV and its leafhopper vector in Egypt.  相似文献

Host manipulation is a strategy used by some parasites to enhance their transmission. These parasites use a combination of neuropharmacological, psychoneuroimmunological, genomic/proteomic, or symbiont-mediated mechanisms to manipulate their hosts. Bodyguard manipulation occurs when parasitized hosts guard parasitoid pupae to protect them from their natural enemies. Bodyguard-manipulated hosts exhibit altered behaviours only after the egression of parasitoid prepupae. Behavioural changes in post-parasitoid egressed hosts could have resulted from their altered physiology. Previous studies have shown that gregarious manipulative parasitoids induce multiple physiological changes in their host, but the physiological changes induced by solitary manipulative parasitoids are unknown. Microplitis pennatulae Ranjith & Rajesh (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a larval parasitoid of Psalis pennatula Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Erebidae). After the egression of parasitoid prepupae, P. pennatula stops its routine activities and protects the parasitoid pupa from hyperparasitoids by body thrashes. In this study, we looked into the physiological changes induced by the solitary manipulative parasitoid, M. pennatulae, in its host, P. pennatula, during various stages of parasitization. We considered octopamine concentration and phenoloxidase (PO) activity as biomarkers of physiological change. We also examined whether M. pennatulae has a symbiotic virus and whether the wasp transfers it to the host during parasitization. We found that octopamine concentration was low in the pre-parasitoid egressed host, but it was elevated after the parasitoid egressed. Phenoloxidase activity was lower in the pre- and post-parasitoid egressed host than in the unparasitized host. We also detected symbiotic bracovirus (BV) in the wasp ovaries and isolated the BV virulence gene from the parasitised host. Our study suggests that solitary parasitoids also induce multiple physiological changes to influence the host behaviour to their advantage, as is the case with the gregarious parasitoids.  相似文献

A new species of Trichogramma that parasitizes Sialis melania eggs is described as Trichogramma tajimaense Yashiro, Hirose and Honda, sp. nov. from Japan. Its phylogenetic position is based on a DNA‐based analysis, and data regarding its male wing polymorphism are also presented. The view that T. tajimaense is closely related to T. semblidis, another parasitoid of Sialis eggs, is supported by the results of a phylogenetic analysis, as well as by the biological and morphological similarities between both species. Trichogramma tajimaense is also similar in male wing polymorphism to T. kurosuae, a gregarious egg parasitoid of the lepidopteran Ivela auripes, as both Trichogramma species exhibit male wing trimorphism (fully alate, brachypterous and apterous forms) in contrast to the male wing dimorphism (fully alate and apterous forms) of T. semblidis. However, no phylogenetic analysis reveals a close relationship between T. tajimaense and T. kurosuae, and a difference exists between these two species in the mean percentage of flightless (brachypterous and apterous) males that emerge from a host egg mass; 96% of T. tajimaense males are incapable of flight, whereas about 50% of T. kurosuae males are flightless. Because all or almost all males of T. semblidis parasitizing Sialis eggs are apterous, T. tajimaense is more similar to T. semblidis than to T. kurosuae in the proportion of flightless males. In addition, male wing polymorphisms of Trichogramma in relation to mating systems could also show a similarity between T. tajimaense and T. semblidis when considering both species as quasi‐gregarious parasitoids of Sialis eggs.  相似文献
