Three species of Boeckella (B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata) were reared from hatching to copepodite I (CI) at three naturally fluctuating food levels and three temperatures in a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design. Development times, lengths and mortality were measured for each species in nine treatments. Temperature had the major effect on development times but food level had the major effect on CI lengths. Mortality varied interspecifically with treatment. The combined effect of temperature and food on development times and lengths was species-specific. There were trade-offs between development time and growth to meet constraints imposed by naupliar metamorphosis. The three species varied in the timing of metamorphosis to CI. B. triarticulata nauplii were age determined, B. dilatata nauplii were size determined and B. hamata nauplii were flexibly age and size determined depending on treatment. Differences in life history parameters and the timing of naupliar metamorphosis are discussed in relation to the distributions of the species in ponds (B. triarticulata), glacial lakes (B. dilatata) and coastal lakes (B. hamata) in the South Island of New Zealand.  相似文献

Three species of Boeckella (B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata) were reared from copepodite I to adult at three naturally fluctuating food levels and three temperatures in a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design. Development times, lengths, times to produce the first clutch, clutch sizes, egg voumes, interclutch times, infertile clutches, total egg production, total reproductive time and mortality were measured. Development times for the three species were surprisingly similar but mortality differed among the treatments. The three species differed in their reproductive strategies. B. triarticulata, the largest species, produced a few large clutches. B. dilatata, the smallest species, produced many small clutches and invested the most energy per egg. B. hamata produced larger clutches than B. dilatata but not as many. B. hamata was the most tolerant of low, food levels and exhibited the most plasticity across the treatments. Thus, greater plasticity in life history characters is associated with survival in a wider-range of conditions.  相似文献

The New Zealand distributions of three species of Boeckella (Copepoda, Calanoida), B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata are mapped. B. triarticulata is primarily a pond dweller but is also found in reservoirs and shallow lakes. B. dilatata is mainly found in the deeper glacial lakes and ponds in the central region of the South Island and B. hamata has a more widespread distribution in lakes and ponds in the South Island and lower half of the North Island. Differences in temperature optima, food requirements and dispersal ability among the three Boeckella species are related to vicariant events to explain their distribution in New Zealand.  相似文献

Spermatogenesis in Boccardiella hamata (Polychaeta: Spionidae) from the Sea of Japan: sperm formation mechanisms as characteristics for future taxonomic revision. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91 : 477–456. To characterize novel features that will be useful in the discussion and validation of the spionid polychaete Boccardiella hamata from the Sea of Japan, the successive stages of spermatogenesis were described and illustrated. Spermatogonia, spermatocytes and early spermatids are aflagellar cells that develop synchronously in clusters united by a cytophore. At the middle spermatid stage, the clusters undergo disintegration and spermatids produce flagella and float separately in coelomic fluid as they transform into sperm. Spermatozoa are filiform. The ring‐shaped storage platelets are located along the anterior nuclear area. The nucleus is cupped by a conical acrosome. A nuclear plate is present between the acrosome and nucleus. The nucleus is a cylinder with the implantation fossa throughout its length and with the anterior part of the flagellum inside the fossa. There is only one centriole, serving as a basal body of the flagellum, situated in close vicinity of the acrosomal area. A collar of four mitochondria is located under the nuclear base. The ultrastructure of B. hamata spermatozoa from the Sea of Japan appears to be close to that of B. hamata from Florida described by Rice (Microscopic Anatomy of Invertebrates, Wiley‐Liss, Inc., New York, 1992), suggesting species identity of the samples from the two regions. However, more detailed study of Florida’s B. hamata sperm is required for a reliable conclusion concerning the similarity of these two polychaetes. In addition to sperm structure, features such as the cytophore‐assigned pattern of spermatogenic cell development, the synchronous pattern of cell divisions, the non‐flagellate early spermatogenic stages, and the vesicle amalgamation that drives meiotic cell cytokinesis and spermatid diorthosis will likely be useful in future testing of the validity of B. hamata and sibling species throughout the world.  相似文献

Nauplii and immature copepodites of Boeckella triarticulata, B. hamata and B. dilatata were tested for their ability to survive and grow on monospecific diets of four species of filamentous cyanobacteria, Cyclotella (Cy) and Cryptomonas (Cr) at 2 mg dry weight 1−1. Cr supported the development from nauplius to adult of all three calanoid species; complete development on other diets occurred only in B. dilatata on Cy and Anabaena oscillarioides (Ao). Differences between nauplii and copepodites of B. dilatata and B. hamata in survivorship and development on diets of Cy, Anabaena flos-aquae (Af), Ao and Nostoc sp. 2 (N2) imply ontogenetic shifts in resource utilization with developmental phase. Ranked in order of their ability to support the development of juvenile boeckellids the foods were Cr > Cy > Ao > N2 > Af > Nostoc calcicola = no food.  相似文献

Summary The vertical distributions of species of chaetognaths are described to a depth of 1043 m in Baffin Bay during the summer. The dominant species in the southern region of the Bay were Eukrohnia hamata and Sagitta maxima and, in the northern region, E. hamata and S. elegans. The younger stages of all chaetognath species were found at depths above the older more mature stages. There was no evidence of any diurnal vertical migration by any species. The population structure of E. hamata was bimodal suggesting two sub-populations and a two year life cycle. Sagitta maxima showed a multimodal population suggesting a life cycle of four or more years. The population structure of E. elegans was unimodal. Gut contents showed that E. hamata fed at a higher rate than did S. maxima. E. hamata fed at a higher rate during the night but there was no significant difference between day/night feeding rates for S. maxima. It was estimated that E. hamata consumed up to 1.8 prey items day-1 and S. maxima 0.5 prey items day-1. The daily ration was influenced by the water temperature. Calculations showed chaetognaths are major predators on copepods consuming between 1.2 and 1.3% of the standing crop of copepods per day. Generally the maximum concentration of chaetognaths was found at a depth below the maximum concentration of copepods.  相似文献

Trophodynamics and predation impact of the 2 dominant chaetognaths Eukrohnia hamata and Sagitta gazellae were investigated at 19 stations in the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands and at a 24-h station occupied at the sub-Antarctic Front in late summer (April/May) 1996. During the entire investigation, the zooplankton assemblages were numerically dominated by copepods with densities ranging from 21 to 170 ind. m−3. Amongst the copepods, Clausocalanus brevipes, Metridia gerlachei and M. lucens dominated accounting for >90% of the total. Generally, chaetognaths were identified as the second most important group composing at times up to 30% (mean = 14.7%) of total zooplankton abundance. Of the two chaetognath species, E.␣hamata was generally numerically dominant. Gut content analysis showed that both chaetognath species are opportunistic predators generally feeding on the most abundant prey, copepods. No feeding patterns were evident during the 24-h station, suggesting that both species feed continuously. The feeding rates of E. hamata ranged from 0 to 0.50 prey ind. day−1 and between 0 and 0.90 prey ind. day−1 for S. gazellae. The maximum total predation impact of E. hamata was equivalent to 5.2% of the copepod standing stock or up to 103% of copepod production per day. For S. gazellae the predation impact was lower, reaching a level of 3.2% of the copepod standing stock or 63% of the daily copepod production. Chaetognaths can, therefore, be regarded as an important pelagic predator of the Prince Edward Islands subsystem. Received: 27 March 1997 / Accepted: 11 September 1997  相似文献

This study seeks to determine the effects of local hydrography on the distribution, abundance and feeding of chaetognaths in the Lazarev Sea, an area strongly controlled by physical processes which has been held responsible for initiating the Weddell Polynya. Zooplankton samples were taken at 39 stations on four transects located between 6°W and 3°E and from 60°S to 70°S between surface and 350 m. The dominant species, Eukrohnia hamata, accounted for 86.5% of all chaetognaths, followed by Sagitta gazellae (8.1%) and Sagitta marri (5.4%). These three species showed distinct vertical and horizontal distribution patterns. While E. hamata and S. marri had maximum abundances below 250 m depth, S. gazellae showed a narrow distribution band in the upper 150 m depth. The distribution pattern was strongly modified at the Greenwich meridian with an upward transport of a high abundance of deep dwelling organisms (S. marri and E. hamata) and a displacement of S. gazellae to the surface, likely coupled with the rise of the warm, saline halo around the Maud Rise. Small copepods were the main prey of all three chaetognath species. Feeding rates (FR) varied among species and depth. Sagitta marri showed the highest FR with 0.38 prey d−1, followed by S. gazellae and E. hamata (0.22 and 0.07 prey d−1). Feeding rates were usually highest in the 25–80-m stratum. Size distribution and maturity of E. hamata revealed a dominance of small and immature organisms along all depths and stations, suggesting that this area might be acting as an important source of recently spawned organisms to the surface.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of chloroplast DNA restriction fragment length variation was undertaken to reconstruct the maternal phylogeny of 18 taxa from both sections of the papilionoid tropical forage legume genusStylosanthes. Data were analysed by means of the computer program PAUP, using an heuristic search with Wagner parsimony. The resulting cladogram dividedStylosanthes into four separate clades, which comprised: (i) theS. guianensis complex and related species (i.e.S. gracilis, S. grandifolia andS. montevidensis); (ii)S. hispida, tetraploidS. hamata s. l.,S. sympodialis, S. humilis, S. leiocarpa, S. angustifolia and certain accesions ofS. scabra; (iii)S. calcicola, S. viscosa, diploidS. hamata s. str., andS. fruticosa, plus accessions ofS. scabra, S. capitata and one accession ofS. grandifolia; and (iv)S. macrocephala and other accessions ofS. capitata not included within clade 3. Results are generally congruent with previously established interspecific relationships and, moreover, enabled identification of putative maternal progenitors for four tetraploid taxa:S. humilis was identified as a likely maternal parent of bothS. sympodialis andS. hamata s. l.,S. viscosa as a maternal parent ofS. scabra, andS. macrocephala as a maternal parent ofS. capitata.  相似文献

Genetic relationships between 6 unclassified taxa and 24 known species of the genus Stylosanthes were investigated by RFLP and STS analyses. This allowed the diploid taxa used in this study to be classified into nine basal (genome) groups. Representative species in these groups included ’S. seabrana’/S. hamata (Group A), S. viscosa (Group B), S. humilis (Group C), S. macrocephala/S. bracteata (Group D), S. pilosa (Group E), S. leiocarpa (Group F), S. guianensis (Group G), S. tomentosa (Group H) and S. calcicola (Group I). Polyploid taxa used were grouped into five classes based on their putative genomic structures. These are AABB for S. scabra, S. aff. scabra, S. sericeiceps, S. aff. hamata and S. tuberculata; AACC for S. mexicana, S. subsericea, S. sundaica and S. sp.A; DDEE for S. capitata; AAFF for S. sympodialis; and AABBXX for S. erecta, with XX representing an unknown genome. Of the 6 unclassified taxa, three were diploids and 3 tetraploids. Of the 3 diploids, the genome of S. sp. was markedly distinct from those of all other diploids analysed in this study, with that of S. leiocarpa being the closest. The genome of S. sp.B was similar to that of S. humilis, with an average dissimilarity value of 15% between them. The genome of S. aff. viscosa was very similar to that of S. viscosa. Genetic variation between these 2 taxa was not larger than that within each of the 2 taxa. Of the 3 tetraploids, the genomic structure of S. sp.A was similar to those of S. mexicana, S. sundaica and S. subsericea, and the genomic structures of S. aff. scabra and S. aff. hamata were similar to those of S. scabra and S. sericeiceps. Summary Effects of three solution aluminium concentrations (0, 25 and 100 M) on nodulation ofStylosanthes hamata andStylosanthes scabra inoculated with Rhizobium CB 756 were studied using nutrient solution culture. Aluminium strongly affected nodulation by delaying nodule appearance and reducing the number and dry weight of nodules in both species. The effects of aluminium toxicity on nodulation were more pronounced inStylosanthes scabra than inStylosanthes hamata. These effects of aluminium on nodulation occurred before any significant effect of aluminium on top growth, root growth or root elongation. A plant transfer experiment suggested that aluminium interfered with root infection and/or nodule initiation in both species. The detrimental effect of aluminium on nodulation appeared to be associated with a reduction in lateral root density, thus decreasing the potential number of sites for root infection and nodule formation.  相似文献

Genome-specific DNA markers are of great value in many applications. Recent work on different plants and animal species indicated that PCR- (polymerase chain reaction) based genetic marker systems using specific primers are highly genome-specific. To test the genome specificity of sequence-tagged-sites (STSs) as genetic markers in Stylosanthes, 20 pairs of primers were generated. Fifteen were from randomly selected single-copy Pstl genomic clones, and the other five were from two known gene sequences. These primer pairs were analysed against a set of 24 genotypes representing 12 different Stylosanthes species. Thirteen of these primer pairs amplified successfully. Overall, there was a low level of genome specificity, suggesting a low degree of genomic divergence within this group of Stylosanthes species. Of the 312 entries (24 genotypes by 13 primer pairs), PCR amplifications were unsuccessful (little or no products) in only 16 cases. The number of banding patterns detected by each of these primer pairs varied from 2 to 12 with an average pair-wise polymorphism of 44.3%. The level of intraspecific variation detected on normal agarose gels was only 3.8%. Further evidence that diploid S. hamata and diploid S. humilis are progenitors of tetraploid S. hamata and that S. viscosa is a progenitor of S. scabra, was obtained.  相似文献

We conducted multinet sampling during winter and summer in the Southern Ocean (Atlantic sector) to investigate the effect of water mass, season and water depth on abundance and species composition of meso- and bathypelagic chaetognaths. Eukrohnia hamata (mean 115 ind. 1,000 m−3) and Sagitta marri (mean 51 ind. 1,000 m−3) were dominant, complemented by E. bathypelagica (mean 19 ind. 1,000 m−3) and E. bathyantarctica (mean 19 ind. 1,000 m−3) below 1,000 m. A further six species were identified, among them the rare bathypelagic species Heterokrohnia fragilis and the subtropical Eukrohnia macroneura that is new to the Antarctic. Water depth and season were the principal determinants of abundance and species composition patterns, indicating vertical seasonal migration and vertical segregation of species. The life cycles of E. hamata and S. marri were studied additionally. Their maturity stages were vertically segregated and prolonged reproductive periods are suggested for both species.  相似文献

1. Wind‐induced sediment resuspension in shallow lakes affects many physical and biological processes, including food gathering by zooplankton. The effects of suspended sediment on clearance rate were determined for a dominant cladoceran, Daphnia carinata, and calanoid copepod, Boeckella hamata, in Lake Waihola, New Zealand. 2. Animals were incubated at multiple densities for 4 days in lake water containing different amounts of suspended lake sediment. Rates of harvest of major food organisms were determined for each sediment level (turbidity) from changes in net growth rate with grazer density. 3. Daphnia cleared all food organisms 7–40 μm in length at similar rates, but was less efficient in its removal of free bacteria, phytoplankton <7 μm, and large cyanobacterial filaments. Elevation of sediment turbidity from 2 to 10 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) (63 mg DW L?1 added sediment) reduced Daphnia clearance of phytoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates by 72–100%, and of amoebae and attached bacteria by 21–44%. Further inhibition occurred at higher turbidity. 4. Boeckella hamata removed microzooplankton primarily, rather than phytoplankton. The rate at which it cleared rotifers was reduced by 56% when turbidity was increased from 2.5 to 100 NTU. 5. In the absence of macrozooplankton, algal growth increased with sediment turbidity, suggesting that sediment also inhibits rotifer grazing. 6. As mid‐day turbidity in Lake Waihola is ≥10 NTU about 40% of the time, sediment resuspension may play a major role in moderating energy flow and structuring pelagic communities in this lake.  相似文献

During a revision of Venezuelan species of Stylosanthes Sw., two quite distinct specimens were found. After a detailed survey of the literature and herbarium material, it was concluded that they belong to an undescribed species. The new species Stylosanthes falconensis Calles & Schultze-Kr. (belonging to section Styposanthes Vogel), endemic to the Sierra San Luis in the State of Falcón, is here described. An illustration is provided and the differences between the new taxon and Stylosanthes hamata (L.) Taub., a closely related species, are presented.  相似文献

The crustacean zooplankton in Lake Mahinerangi, a polymictic, mesotrophic reservoir, were studied for 19 months. The cladocerans, Bosmina meridionalis and Ceriodaphnia dubia, had unimodal patterns of abundance with peak densities in summer; cyclopoids had a single peak of maximum abundance in autumn and Daphnia carinata showed a bimodal pattern with peak densities in early summer and early winter. The strong seasonality in abundance of zooplankton in Lake Mahinerangi distinguishes this lake from other temperate lakes in New Zealand and may reflect its cool winter temperatures (< 5 °C for 2 months). A calanoid, Boeckella hamata, bred throughout the year and was the dominant species numerically. Instar analysis indicated that there were at least three, and possibly four, generations per year. Instantaneous birth and death rates were low with annual mean values (0.036 and 0.057, respectively) that were 2-3.5 times less than those recorded in a population of the same species in Lake Pounui, but within the range of those recorded in calanoid populations elsewhere in New Zealand. The Boeckella population in Lake Mahinerangi appears to be controlled largely by temperature, parasitism and food, with predation having no, or a negligible, effect.  相似文献

The genus Harnischia from China is revised. Harnischia cultriata sp.nov. is described as new to science from the male imago. H. hamata Wang et Zheng is recognized as new synonym of H. angularis Albu et Botnariuc and H. longispuria Wang et Zheng is recognized as a new synonym of H. curtilamellata (Malloch). A key to male imagines is presented. The distribution of the six known Chinese species is mapped. An emended generic diagnosis is given and discussed. Variation in the phallapodeme as an important specific diagnostic character within the genus is furnished.  相似文献

Summary Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were generated from 20 cultivars and accessions representing four agronomically important species of Stylosanthes, S. scabra, S. hamata, S. guianensis, and S. humilis. Approximately 200 fragments generated by 22 primers of arbitrary sequence were used to assess the level of DNA variation. Relatively low levels of polymorphism (0–16% of total bands in pairwise comparisons) were found within each species, while polymorphisms between the species were much higher (up to 46%). Very few polymorphisms (0–2%) were detected between the individuals of the same cultivar or accession. A phenogram of relationships among the species was constructed based on band sharing. Four main clusters corresponding to each species were readily distinguished on this phenogram. The allotetraploid species S. hamata and its putative diploid progenitor, S. humilis, were more similar to each other than to S. scabra and S. guianensis. No variation in RAPD markers was found between the two commercial S. hamata cvs Verano and Amiga. Cultivar Oxley in S. guianensis was considerably different from the other cultivars and accessions of this species. The phylogenetic distinctions obtained with RAPDs were in agreement with other studies from morphology, cytology, and enzyme electrophoresis. The low level of polymorphisms observed within each species suggested that interspecific crosses may be a better vehicle for the construction of RAPD linkage maps in Stylosanthes.  相似文献
