The Achères wastewater treatment plant, located just downstream of Paris, discharges its effluents into the lower Seine River. The effluents contain large numbers of heterotrophic bacteria, organic matter, and ammonium and are a source of nitrifying bacteria. As a result, degradation of organic matter by heterotrophic bacteria and subsequent oxygen depletion occur immediately downstream of the effluent outlet, whereas nitrifying bacteria apparently need to build up a significant biomass before ammonium oxidation significantly depletes the oxygen. We quantified the potential total nitrifying activity and the potential activities of the ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizing communities along the Seine River. In the summer, the maximum nitrifying activity occurs in the upper freshwater estuary, approximately 200 km downstream of Achères. The quantities of nitrifying bacteria, based on amoA gene copy numbers, and of Nitrobacter organisms, based on 16S rRNA gene copy numbers, were correlated with the potential nitrifying activities. The species composition of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was investigated at two sites: the Triel station just downstream from Achères (km 84) and the Seine freshwater estuary at the Duclair station (km 278). By means of PCR primers targeting the amoA gene, a gene library was created. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of the analyzed clones at both sites were affiliated with the genus NITROSOMONAS: The Nitrosomonas oligotropha- and Nitrosomonas urea-related clones represented nearly 81% of the community of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria at Triel and 60% at Duclair. Two other ammonia-oxidizing clusters of the beta subclass of the Proteobacteria, i.e., Nitrosomonas europaea- and Nitrosospira-like bacteria, were found in smaller numbers. The major change in the ammonia-oxidizing community between the two stations along the Seine River-upper estuary continuum was the replacement of the N. oligotropha- and N. urea-related bacteria by the Nitrosospira-affiliated bacteria. Although the diversities of the ammonia oxidizers appear to be similar for the two sites, only half of the restriction patterns are common to both sites, which could be explained by the differences in ammonium concentrations, which are much lower in the upper estuary than in the river at the effluent outlet. These results imply a significant immigration and/or selection of the ammonia-oxidizing bacterial population along the continuum of the Seine River from Paris to the estuary.  相似文献

The zonation of non-breeding waterbirds along the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands–Belgium), one of the longest estuaries in NW-Europe with still a complete salinity gradient, including a large freshwater tidal area, was described. Numbers of birds were counted monthly over the period October 1991 to June 1997. Highest numbers of waterbirds were observed in late autumn and winter, with annual peak numbers ranging between 150,000 and 235,000 individuals for the whole estuary. Based on a multivariate analysis different waterbird communities were observed along the salinity gradient. The polyhaline areas of the estuary were numerically dominated by the waders Oystercatcher and Dunlin. Due to the presence of a large brackish marsh in the mesohaline zone, the waterbird community in this area was dominated by the herbivores Wigeon and Greylag Goose. In the oligohaline and freshwater tidal areas, the waterbird community was dominated by duck species, with Teal and Mallard being the most important. The international importance of the Schelde estuary for waterbirds was evidenced by the fact that for 21 waterbird species the 1% level criterion, according to the Ramsar convention, was exceeded. The relation of the observed diversity and community patterns with the functional and habitat diversity of the Schelde estuary as well as the effect of recent conservation measures to preserve this habitat were discussed.  相似文献

The Forth estuary is a major estuary on the east coast of Scotland; it receives effluent from domestic and industrial (petro-chemical and distilling) sources. Following a study on the distribution of the macrofauna of the intertidal areas in relation to pollution (McLusky et al., 1978), this paper is concerned with the distribution and abundance of aquatic oligochaetes and the small polychaeteManayunkia aestuarina in relation to estuarine salinity, organic enrichment, and industrial effluent. In the most polluted parts of the estuary oligochaetes are the sole inhabitants of the mudflats; in other less polluted flats they are very abundant. In the least polluted parts the numbers of oligochaetes diminish as the numbers and diversity of macrofauna increase. Estimates of the production of oligochaetes are given.  相似文献

Summary The Ems estuary is a tidal system, showing typical estuaries characteristics, such as gradients of salinity and suspended matter in the water phase. The tidal amplitude is 2.5–3 m. Tidal flats cover 40% of the total area in the outer part and 75% in the innermost part of the estuary, the Dollard. In the sediment aerobic heterotrophic bacteria are concentrated in the upper 2 cm, the numbers rapidly decreasing with depth.Oxygen production and consumption rates in the sediment, and oxygen consumption in the water are measured, together with environmental parameters and numbers of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria. Using a conversion factor of 12/32, oxygen measurements are translated to organic carbon. Input of organic carbon from external sources (particulate carbon from the river Ems and the North Sea, and organic waste discharge) is calculated for the Dollard. An organic carbon budget for the Dollard, using these calculated figures from one year's measurements, showed that most of the organic carbon entering the systems, originated from external sources.Mineralization was quantitatively more important in the sediment than it was in the water phase. The calculated import and production of organic carbon in the system was larger than the calculated consumption. An explanation for this difference is probably the export of soluble organic carbon, which was not measured, to the adjoining Waddensea, which must be considerable. It was concluded that heterotrophic bacteria must play an important role in carbon fluxes in the Dollard and that studies of growth yield under in situ conditions are necessary for a better understanding of their role in the ecosystem.  相似文献

The intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands and Belgium) was sampled in late autumn of 1990 at 50 stations along the whole salinity gradient (between Vlissingen and Dendermonde), including the freshwater tidal part. All stations were situated in sheltered areas with a relatively muddy sediment. Species richness, diversity and total biomass of the benthic macrofauna decreased along the salinity gradient from Vlissingen to Dendermonde, while total density showed no clear trend. Especially the oligohaline and freshwater tidal part of the Schelde estuary was characterized by a very impoverished benthic community, composed only of Oligochaeta. No other species (freshwater, marine or brackish) was observed in this part of the estuary. The marine part had a more diverse macrozoobenthos structure than that of the brackish part. Species found only in the marine zone areCerastoderma edule, Tharyx marioni, Eteone longa, Nephtys hombergii andCapitella capitata. In the brackish part of the estuary,Corophium volutator was a typical, dominant species. However, a lot of the dominant species were common in both the marine and brackish part of the Schelde estuary (e.g. Heteromastus filiformis, Pygospio elegans, Nereis diversicolor, Macoma balthica). The observed gradient in species composition and dominance is compared with some other European estuaries. The marine and brackish part of the Schelde estuary is quite similar to other european estuaries. The freshwater tidal part, however, was more impoverished.  相似文献

Zonation of intertidal macrobenthos in the estuaries of Schelde and Ems   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Based on data, collected in 1980–1990, the intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Schelde and Ems estuaries was compared. The spatial occurrence of the benthic macrofauna along the salinity gradient, including the freshwater tidal area was emphasized. Both estuaries appeared to have a very similar species composition, especially at genus level. The higher number of species observed in the Schelde estuary was probably due to a greater habitat diversity. In both estuaries species diversity decreased with distance upstream. The total density did not vary along the estuarine gradient, whereas biomass is highest in the polyhaline zone.In both estuaries distinct intertidal benthic communities were observed along the salinity gradient: a marine community in the polyhaline zone, a brackish community in the mesohaline zone, and a third community in the oligohaline and freshwater tidal zones of the estuary. These three communities were very similar between both estuaries. Their main characteristics were discussed together with the occurrence and distribution of the dominant species. For the Schelde estuary and to a lesser extent also for the Ems estuary, there was evidence that anthropogenic stress had a negative effect on the intertidal macrobenthic communities of the oligohaline/freshwater tidal zone. Only Oligochaeta were dominating, whereas the very euryhaline and/or true limnetic species were missing. In the mesohaline zone, the Schelde estuary was dominated by large numbers of short-living, opportunistic species, whereas in the Ems estuary relatively more stable macrobenthic communities were observed. A comparison with some other European estuaries showed in general similar trends as those observed for the Schelde and Ems estuaries.  相似文献

The Paripe river estuary is located in Itamaracá Island, north coast of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Its Crustacea Decapoda fauna was studied during several years. In the estuary there are mangroves, mud- and sandbanks, and tidal creeks. The fauna comprises a total of 64 species in 20 families. The coexistence of these species confirms the ecological importance of this small estuary, only 1.6 km long and 0.5 km wide. The ecology of each species in the estuary is presented.  相似文献

Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, and Ike deposited large quantities of sediment on coastal wetlands after making landfall in the northern Gulf of Mexico. We sampled sediments deposited on the wetland surface throughout the entire Louisiana and Texas depositional surfaces of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, and the Louisiana portion of Hurricane Ike. We used spatial interpolation to model the total amount and spatial distribution of inorganic sediment deposition from each storm. The sediment deposition on coastal wetlands was an estimated 68, 48, and 21 million metric tons from Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustav, respectively. The spatial distribution decreased in a similar manner with distance from the coast for all hurricanes, but the relationship with distance from the storm track was more variable between events. The southeast-facing Breton Sound estuary had significant storm-derived sediment deposition west of the storm track, whereas sediment deposition along the south-facing coastline occurred primarily east of the storm track. Sediment organic content, bulk density, and grain size also decreased significantly with distance from the coast, but were also more variable with respect to distance from the track. On average, eighty percent of the mineral deposition occurred within 20 km from the coast, and 58% was within 50 km of the track. These results highlight an important link between tropical cyclone events and coastal wetland sedimentation, and are useful in identifying a more complete sediment budget for coastal wetland soils.  相似文献

Contaminants discharged to an estuary usually become associated with the near surface brackish waters and on an ebb tide these waters form a plume which streams away from the estuary mouth. As the plume mixes downwards, a localised region of minimum dilution may form at the sea-bed, depending on the rates of transverse and vertical mixing.A modelling study of the outflow from the Tees estuary suggests that regions of minimum dilution at the sea-bed could occur between 1.5 and 4.0 km from the estuary mouth, the latter corresponding to a tide of spring range. An estimate for the Humber outflow on a spring tide indicates that a similar impact region could occur at a distance of some 9 km from the entrance to the estuary. At the Tyne and Wear estuaries, the vertical mixing of contaminants is likely to be too slow for the regions of minimum dilution to form before the discharge plumes are cut off from the estuary mouths by the reversal of tidal flow.  相似文献

Summary A quantitative study of the sulphur cycle in the tidal flat-sediments of the Eems-Dollard estuary was started by determining the distribution of two physiologically different groups of bacteria: sulphate-reducing and sulphide-oxidizing bacteria. Viable counts of these bacterial groups were determined by most probable number techniques. The highest numbers of aerobic sulphide-oxidizing bacteria were found in the upper 2 cm of the sediment. A rapid decrease was observed with increasing depth. The anaerobic sulphate-reducing bacteria showed different distribution-patterns with depth. Frequently high numbers of these bacteria were found above the redox-discontinuity-layer. This may be attributed to the presence of anaerobic micro-pockets in this largely aerobic top-layer of the sediment. The horizontal distribution of the sulphide-oxidizing bacteria appeared to be highly correlated with sediment parameters such as organic carbon and clay content of the sediment. The sulphate-reducing bacteria showed only a small linear correlation with these parameters.By means of polyfactor-analysis mathematical models were made with bacterial numbers as the dependent variables and with some environmental parameters as independent variables. The parameters used in this models could explain the variance of the viable counts for approximately 70%. The clay content of the sediment and the number of sulphate reducing bacteria appeared to determine to a large extent the variance in numbers of sulphide-oxidizing bacteria. There are indications that a great deal of the sulphide-oxidizing bacteria might be mixotrophic. For the explanation of the variance in numbers of sulphate-reducing bacteria the most important parameters were the clay content of the sediment, the number of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria and temperature (or season). Therefore the numbers of these organisms were varying throughout the year. It is assumed that the heterotrophic bacteria supply the sulphate-reducing bacteria with organic substrates.  相似文献

Information on the distribution of species richness, faunal density, biomass and estimated productivity of benthic invertebrates in Tasmanian estuaries was quantified at a variety of spatial and temporal scales to assess general hypothesis relating community metrics to such environmental variables as salinity, seagrass biomass and sediment particle size. An associated aim was to assess appropriate scales of investigation for soft-sediment biota distributed in estuaries, including whether patterns identified at individual sites, estuaries, tidal levels or times are likely to have more general relevance. Faunal biomass and productivity varied principally at between-estuary (10 to 1000 km) and replicate-sample (1 m) scales, indicating that these two community metrics were largely responding to estuary-wide effects, such as nutrient loading, and to microhabitat features, rather than to locality characteristics at intermediate scales such as salinity, anoxia or sediment particle size. By contrast, faunal density showed greater response to tidal height (1 to 100 m) and to factors distributed at the locality scale within estuary (10 km) than to factors between estuary. Both faunal density and species richness in estuaries declined over three- and fivefold ranges down the shore from high water mark to the shallow sublittoral, while estimated productivity and biomass showed highest overall levels at low water mark. The greatest component of variance in species richness was associated with tidal height, with variance then distributed approximately evenly between other spatial scales examined. At the low-tide and shallow subtidal levels, species richness, faunal biomass and estimated productivity were all highly correlated with salinity and biomass of macrophytes, whereas faunal density was highly correlated with biomass of macrophytes only. Relationships between environmental and biological variables examined were poorly defined at high tidal levels. Seasonal plus interannual variance was much lower than spatial variance—a clear indication that sampling effort in studies would generally be better directed across a range of localities than for a single locality to be repeatedly investigated over time.  相似文献

Fine sediment forms tidal flats along most of the Severn Estuary coastline but subtidal deposits are localized, mainly confined to Newport Deep and Bridgwater Bay. The estuary is experiencing a period of sea level rise which has led to coastal mud erosion in recent centuries. Sediment exchanges with the sea and river inputs are negligible compared to the large-scale exchanges within the estuary itself. Measurements of tidal flat level changes, archaeological finds and anthropogenic chemical concentrations confirm that mud flat erosion is long term and typical of the entire estuary. Sea level rise and coast erosion would normally lead to much of this sediment being redeposited inshore at the landward limit of the alluvium. Other than in narrow salt marsh strips, such deposition is prevented in the Severn by the river walls. In cores of subtidal muddy sediment, the number and thickness of sand layers decreases upwards. The top metre or so is entirely mud and exhibits thousands of layers of varying thickness and origin. Radiochemical analysis confirms that mud is accumulating in the subtidal zone of Newport Deep and the seaward periphery of the Bridgwater Bay mud patch and is increasing in proportion to sand. Circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that for at least the last 600 years the dominant pattern has been one of erosion of fine sediment from the coastal margin and its accumulation in subtidal sinks.  相似文献

Suspended matter in the Scheldt estuary   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Scheldt estuary is characterised by a specific energy pattern resulting from the interaction of wave energy, tidal energy and river energy. It divides the estuary into three parts and governs suspended matter transport and distribution pattern. Observation of suspended matter transport shows the existence of three estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM), a marine-dominated ETM in the lower estuary at the river mouth, a river-dominated ETM in the upper estuary with suspended matter concentration reaching up to 300 mg/l, and the most important tide-dominated ETM in the middle estuary with suspended matter concentrations from several hundred milligrams per litre up to a few grams per litre. Resuspension is the dominant phenomenon in this last ETM due to the tidal related bottom scour, which is initiated when a critical erosion velocity of 0.56 m/s is exceeded. An assessment of residual current along the axis of the estuary shows distinctive pattern between the surface water flow and the near bottom water flow. Also the local morphology of the river, natural or man-made, has a prominent effect on the orientation and strength of the residual currents flowing along either side of the river or river bend. Evaluation of suspended matter concentration in relation to the current flow shows no systematic correlation either because of phenomena as scour lag and settling lag mainly in the middle estuary, or because of the current independency character of uniform-suspension mainly in the upper and lower estuary. Quantification of suspended matter load exhibits a net downstream transport from the upper estuary, a near-equilibrium sustainable status in the middle estuary and a net upstream transport of suspended matter from the lower estuary. The characteristic of suspended matter is induced by and is a function of e.g. tidal phase, spring-neap tide, longitudinal and vertical distribution mechanisms, seasons, short and long terms of anthropogenic influence and/or estuarine maintenance. Suspended matter is dominated by complex and cohesive organo-mineral aggregates. It consists of a variable amount of an inorganic fraction (average of 89%) and an organic fraction and occurs largely as flocs, the size of which is remarkably larger in the upper estuary and smallest within the ETM in the middle estuary. Independent time series measurements (1990–2000) of suspended matter property show an increasing sand fraction, a decreasing organic matter content, a rise in 13C as well as a decrease in water transparency. These independent measurements exhibit coherent consequences of estuarine maintenance operations. Maintenance dredging of the shipping channel and harbours and dumping operation in the Scheldt strengthen marine influence further landward, resulting in a sustained tidal range increment and upstream flow and transport of suspended matter.  相似文献

Denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) are processes occurring simultaneously under oxygen-limited or anaerobic conditions, where both compete for nitrate and organic carbon. Despite their ecological importance, there has been little investigation of how denitrification and DNRA potentials and related functional genes vary vertically with sediment depth. Nitrate reduction potentials measured in sediment depth profiles along the Colne estuary were in the upper range of nitrate reduction rates reported from other sediments and showed the existence of strong decreasing trends both with increasing depth and along the estuary. Denitrification potential decreased along the estuary, decreasing more rapidly with depth towards the estuary mouth. In contrast, DNRA potential increased along the estuary. Significant decreases in copy numbers of 16S rRNA and nitrate reducing genes were observed along the estuary and from surface to deeper sediments. Both metabolic potentials and functional genes persisted at sediment depths where porewater nitrate was absent. Transport of nitrate by bioturbation, based on macrofauna distributions, could only account for the upper 10 cm depth of sediment. A several fold higher combined freeze-lysable KCl-extractable nitrate pool compared to porewater nitrate was detected. We hypothesised that his could be attributed to intracellular nitrate pools from nitrate accumulating microorganisms like Thioploca or Beggiatoa. However, pyrosequencing analysis did not detect any such organisms, leaving other bacteria, microbenthic algae, or foraminiferans which have also been shown to accumulate nitrate, as possible candidates. The importance and bioavailability of a KCl-extractable nitrate sediment pool remains to be tested. The significant variation in the vertical pattern and abundance of the various nitrate reducing genes phylotypes reasonably suggests differences in their activity throughout the sediment column. This raises interesting questions as to what the alternative metabolic roles for the various nitrate reductases could be, analogous to the alternative metabolic roles found for nitrite reductases.  相似文献

The effect of hydrodynamically-mobilized sediment on abundance and vertical distribution of macrobenthic fauna was studied in Königshafen, a sheltered tidal bay at the northern end of the Island of Sylt (North Sea). Sediment drift tended to increase from high towards low tide level, while abundance of nearly all species decreased (with the polychaeteSpio filicornis as a notable exception). To test whether this decrease could be attributed to water currents affecting sediment stability, experimental flumes with funnels at both ends were set up to enhance sediment mobility by increasing tidal current velocities. Abundance and vertical distribution of fauna inside and outside the flumes were compared. Responses of individual species depended on their vertical position in the sediment, and resembled those observed along the gradient of sediment drift between high and low tide levels. Mainly juveniles ofPygospio elegans, Scoloplos armiger, Hydrobia ulvae andMacoma balthica, and the small polychaeteMicrophthalmus sczelkowii were washed out of the sediment. No effect of increased erosion inside the flume was found on the numbers ofCapitella capitata and the oligochaetesTubificoides benedii andT. pseudogaster. These oligochaetes probably migrated downwards with increasing erosion in the flumes. Numbers decreased in the upper cm and tended to increase below. A storm had a similar effect on oligochaete vertical distribution, while under conditions of permanently high sediment mobility near low tide level, these species were rare or absent. It is concluded that even under sheltered conditions, differential degrees of sediment mobility may have effects on the zonation of the tidal flat macrofauna.  相似文献

Estuarine migration of anosmic and control silver-phase American eels was examined during the fall spawning migration. Ultrasonic telemetry was used to track seventeen control and eight anosmic silver eels through 32 km of the Penobscot Estuary, Maine, U.S.A.. Twelve of seventeen control eels migrated out of the estuary in 97 h (approximately 4 d) on average. Only two of eight anosmic eels migrated out of the estuary. On average these two anosmic eels migrated out of the estuary within 180 h (approximately 7.5 d) of release and the other six had not left within 9 d. Most control eels progressed rapidly to the mouth of the estuary within a few days. Anosmic eels spent more time in the estuary and demonstrated different behavior from control eels due to their lack of olfaction. Some control eels moved with the appropriate tide, the ebb tide for transport out of the estuary, within one tidal cycle of being released into tidal freshwater. However, anosmic eels either did not move with the appropriate tide or took significantly longer to do so. Olfaction was probably used for orientation by control eels sensing chemical clues (organic and inorganic), which change throughout the tidal cycle. Increased migration times and errors in orientation were likely related to the inability of anosmic eels to use selective tidal stream transport for movement out of the estuary. Chemical clues seem to be one of the most important environmental clues used to guide estuarine migration of silver eels. However, a hierarchy of sensory mechanisms and environmental clues are most likely used for estuarine orientation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that an estuarine species as the spotted grunter Pomadasys commersonnii is evenly distributed within the estuary and uniformly exploited by different groups of fishers. This was done by investigating the movements and area use of spotted grunter in relation to the fisheries. The position of 20 acoustically tagged fish was recorded during 36 days in February and March 2003, by manual tracking and automated data logging receivers. Information on the fisheries in the estuary was collected through visual registration of fishing effort and interviews. The spotted grunter moved on average 1.0 km (SD ± 0.7) between positional fixes. Most of the fish were positioned in the lower part of the 12 km long estuary, as 70% of the positional fixes were within the first 3 km, and 89% within the first 6 km. Approximately half (49%) of all the fixes were between 1.0 and 1.5 km from the estuary mouth. The spotted grunter used on average 4.9 km (SD ± 4.9) of the length of the estuary, and there was no significant relationship between the length of the estuary used and the body length of the fish (26–39 cm TL). Subsistence fishers accounted for 73% of fishing lines in the water, while recreational fishers accounted for the rest. Ninety-three percent of the lines were recorded within the first 6 km from the estuary mouth, of which 80% were recorded within the first 3 km. Almost 1/3 of the fishing effort was recorded between 1.0 and 1.5 km from the mouth. The hypothesis that the estuarine dependent species spotted grunter was evenly distributed within the estuary was rejected. However, there was a significant relationship between the distribution of the fishing effort of the subsistence fishers and the fish, indicating that the spotted grunter was uniformly exploited within the estuary by this group of fishers. In contrast, there was no relationship between the distribution of fish and recreational anglers.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments and field measurements were conducted to examine the effect of tide on the organic carbon mineralization rate in sediments under aerobic conditions of an intertidal estuary. Core samples of surface sediments were collected from an intertidal estuary of the Kurose River, Hiroshima, Japan. To mimic low and high tide in the intertidal estuary, organic carbon mineralization rates in the samples were measured in the laboratory under both air-exposed and submerged conditions. Mineralization rates under air-exposed conditions were two to five times higher than those under submerged conditions. Field measurements of the rate of CO2 emission from the sediment surface revealed a rapid increase in the rate as the sea level fell during ebb tide. The estimated amount of daily organic carbon mineralization assuming a constantly submerged condition was 30% less than that estimated when considering the semi-diurnal fluctuation in sea level. These results indicate that tide has a marked impact on the organic carbon mineralization rate in sediments under aerobic conditions on an intertidal estuary, and tidal effects need to be considered when the amount of mineralized organic carbon is estimated.  相似文献

Macrophytic vegetation of the River Swale, Yorkshire   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
SUMMARY. An account is given of the distribution down the River Swale in summer 1976 of 132 species of photosynthetic plants which are recognizable macroscopically. Some environmental data are included. The river may be regarded as falling into three zones, both with regard to its physical features and its type of vegetation. The upper zone has rocky substrata, fast flows and a macrophytic vegetation largely of bryophytes; the middle zone has unconsolidated substrata and the macrophytic vegetation is relatively sparse; the lower zone is silted and the macrophytic vegetation consists largely of angiosperms. The flora of the Swale is compared with that of the Tees, since eventually the former is likely to receive water from the latter as part of a major water transfer scheme. Eleven species of 'river' angiosperm which are present in the Tees above the projected abstraction point are absent from the Swale above the inflow point.  相似文献

Horizontal biosedimentary gradients across the Sado estuary,W. Portugal   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The topography of the Sado estuary, the second largest of Portugal, comprises the outer estuary inside the entrance channel and the inner estuary, on the inward side of which begins the tidal mudflats. The outer estuary subtidal area covers approximately 70 km2 and presents a series of longitudinal intertidal sandbanks, separating a northern and a southern channel. A benthic survey was undertaken in the outer estuary during June 1986, in which superficial sediments and macrofauna were sampled at 133 locations. The environmental variables measured in the superficial sediments were the temperature, the granulometric structure, the silt, sand and the gravel content, and the total organic matter content. The primary macrofauna biological variables studied were the species composition, abundance and biomass, calculated on wet, dry and ash-free dry weight. The granulometry and the organic content of superficial sediments agreed with the transient and the residual currents velocity field, simulated in a 2-D hydrodynamic model previously elaborated for the outer estuary. The northern channel superficial sediments showed higher silt and total organic matter content, while the model also suggested lower transient and residual velocities, water flow and shear stress in this channel. The distribution patterns of the subtidal macrofauna were separated into two main groups of species, one comprising taxa essentially settled near the estuarine mouth and the other inwards. Biological primary variables also showed consistent patterns, comparable to other Portuguese estuaries. The major subtidal benthic biotopes were obtained through classification analysis and related to the prevailing hydrophysical and sedimentary conditions in the outer estuary.  相似文献
