Biogeochemical study of organic substances in Antarctic lakes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The features of organic constituents in Antarctic lakes and ponds of the McMurdo, Syowa and Vestfold oases are summarised from a biogeochemical viewpoint. Total organic carbon or dissolved organic carbon contents in saline lakewaters are generally extremely high and much higher than those in freshwater lakes. The concentrations and/or compositions of hydrocarbons, fatty acids, sterols, phenolic acids and hydroxy acids in lake and pond waters and sediments vary markedly, probably reflecting differences in biological activity and source organisms. Long-chain alkenes, such as n-C29:2 (carbon chain length: numbers of unsaturated bonds) are found as the major hydrocarbons in some anoxic lake sediments. Unusually, long-chain n-alkanoic acids are abundant in some Antarctic lake sediments and 24-ethylcholest-5-en-3-ol is the most prominent sterol in most of the lakes studied. It is suggested that some bacteria, and cyanobacteria and algae are important sources of long-chain n-alkanoic acids and 24-ethylcholest-5-en-3-ol, respectively, as previously reported from environments of the mid and lower latitudes. The dominance of p-hydroxybenzoic acid among the phenolic acids found together with the absence of syringic, p-coumaric and ferulic acids in the Antarctic lakes reflects the absence of vascular plants in the areas studied.In three Antarctic saline lakes (Vanda, Fryxell and Ace) the kinds and amounts of organic constituents differ with depth due to the zonation of microorganisms. The maximum fatty acid contents are found at depths just above the anoxic layer, corresponding to the photosynthetic maxima in the lakes, and the depths of maximum phytoplankton populations. In the bottom sediments of the lakes, the composition of organic substances is significantly different from that in the water columns, indicating that the sinking organic substances are degraded rapidly by microorganisms on the lake bottom.  相似文献

Partitioning of water resources among plants of a lowland tropical forest   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Source water used by plants of several species in a semi-evergreen lowland tropical forest on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, was assessed by comparing the relative abundance of deuterium, D, versus hydrogen, H (stable hydrogen isotope composition, D) in xylem sap and in soil water at different depths, during the dry season of 1992. Ecological correlates of source water were examined by comparing xylem water D values with leaf phenology, leaf water status determined with a pressure chamber, and rates of water use determined as mass flow of sap using the stem heat balance method. Soil water D values decreased sharply to 30 cm, then remained relatively constant with increasing depth. Average D values were-13, for 0–30 cm depth and-36.7 for 30–100 cm depth. Soil water D values were negatively associated with soil water content and soil water potential. Concurrent analyses of xylem water revealed a high degree of partitioning of water resources among species of this tropical forest. Xylem water D of deciduous trees (average=-25.3±1.4) was higher than that of evergreen trees (average=-36.3±3.5), indicating that evergreen species had access to the more abundant soil water at greater depth than deciduous species. In evergreen shade-tolerant and high-light requiring shrubs and small trees, D of xylem water was negatively correlated with transpiration rate and leaf water potential indicating that species using deeper, more abundant water resources had both higher rates of water use and more favorable leaf water status.  相似文献

Summary The ratio of deuterium to hydrogen (expressed as D) in hydrogen released as water during the combustion of dried plant material was examined. The D value (metabolic hydrogen) determined on plant materials grown under controlled conditions is correlated with pathways of photosynthetic carbon metabolism. C3 plants show mean D values of-132 for shoots and -117 for roots; C4 plants show mean D values of -91 for shoots and-77 for roots and CAM plants a D value of-75 for roots and shoots. The difference between the D value of shoot material from C3 and C4 plants was confirmed in species growing under a range of glasshouse conditions. This difference in D value between C3 and C4 species does not appear to be due to differences in the D value (tissue water) in the plants as a result of physical fractionation of hydrogen isotopes during transpiration. In C3 and C4 plants the hydrogen isotope discrimination is in the same direction as the carbon isotope discrimination and factors contributing to the difference in D values are discussed. In CAM plants grown in the laboratory or collected from the field D values range from-75 to +50 and are correlated with 13C values. When deprived of water, the D value (metabolic hydrogen) in both soluble and insoluble material in leaves of Kalanchoe daigremontiana Hamet et Perr., becomes less negative. These changes may reflect the deuterium enrichment of tissue water during transpiration, or in field conditions, may reflect the different D value of available water in areas of increasing aridity. Whatever the origin of the variable D value in CAM plants, this parameter may be a useful index of the water relations of these plants under natural conditions.  相似文献

Paleolimnological techniques were employed to document the limnological histories of the aurora trout lakes, located in the Sudbury region of Ontario. Two of these lakes are of special interest to fisheries managers, as they represent the only known native habitats of a rare strain of brook trout: the aurora trout. These lakes were limed as part of restoration efforts. Stratigraphic changes in diatom and chrysophyte assemblages from dated lake sediment cores indicate that all the lakes have been impacted by anthropogenic acidification, although the timing and the magnitude of acidification were different amongst the lakes. For example, Whirligig Lake was likely the most naturally acidic lake in the past, but it had further acidified since about 1960. This lake was limed in 1989 and then again in 1993. In Whitepine Lake, acidification started 1940; however, in the most recent sediments (1992), some recovery in lakewater acidity has occurred. In Little Whitepine Lake (a reference lake), acidification started earlier (1920) and the lakewater pH continued to decline until about 1990. This lake was limed in 1989. The chrysophyte paleoindicators suggest a recent recovery in this lake. The successful re-introduction of aurora trout in Whirligig and Whitepine lakes is undoubtedly related to the improved water quality through liming but, based on our paleolimnological indicators, the lakes' limnological characteristics (e.g. pH and metal concentrations) are still different from those present before atmospheric deposition of strong acids from the Sudbury smelters.  相似文献

A new genus and species of freshwater sponge, Clypeatula cooperensis , collected from three lakes in the Northern Rocky Mountains of Montana, USA, are described. The sponge grows as a hard, disc-shaped encrustation on the undersides of rocks and logs. It lacks microscleres and has amphioxeal megascleres that often show a slight midregion bulb and are usually covered with short, conical spines except at their tips. The sponge is also non-gemmulating, overwintering in a regressed state in which choanocyte chambers are reduced in number. Phylogenetic analyses of complete 18S rDNA sequences of C. cooperensis , Ephydatia muelleri , Spongilla lacustris and Eunapius fragilis suggest that C. cooperensis is more closely related to Ephydatia muelleri than to Spongilla lacustris or Eunapius fragilis . Our data, nonetheless, do not rule out the possibility that C. cooperensis is more closely related to the non-gemmulating sponges of Lake Baikal (Russia) than it is to Ephydatia muelleri . These phylogenetic analyses support the erection of a new genus, the monophyly of freshwater sponges belonging to the families Spongillidae and Lubomirskiidae, and the monophyly of demosponges.  相似文献

Seasonal investigations of methane distribution and rates of its oxidation and generation in the water column and sediments of the Black Sea northwestern shelf were carried out within the framework of the interdisciplinary projects European River–Ocean Systems (EROS-2000, EROS-21) and Biogenic Gases Exchange in the Black Sea (BigBlack) in August 1995, May 1997, and December 1999. Experiments that involved the addition of 14CH3COONa and 14CO2 to sediment samples showed the main part of methane to be formed from CO2. Maximum values of methane production (up to 559 mol/(m2 day)) were found in coastal sediments in summer time. In winter and spring, methane production in the same sediments did not exceed 3.6–4.2 mol/(m2 day). The 13C values of methane ranged from –70.7 to –81.8, demonstrating its microbial origin and contradicting the concept of the migration of methane from cold seeps or from the oil fields located on the Black Sea shelf. Experiments that involved the addition of 14CH4 to water and sediment samples showed that a considerable part of methane is oxidized in the upper horizons of bottom sediments and in the water column. Nevertheless, it was found that, in summer, part of the methane (from 6.8 to 320 mol/(m2 day)) arrives in the atmosphere.  相似文献

In order to conserve the horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus, a famous living fossil in Kinmen and Taiwan, several investigations related to its basic biology were conducted, and public education/participation programs were implemented. Biological investigations included artificially inducing spawning in the laboratory and field, rearing of juveniles, monitoring of habitat characteristics, and establishing a protected area. The grain size of the sediment of the spawning ground was 0.4–1.8mm in diameter and that of the juvenile nursing ground was 0.11–0.19mm. The most suitable water temperature for incubating eggs and rearing juveniles ranged from 28 to 31°C. A total of 800ha of the coastal zone on Kinmen was designated a protected area for the horseshoe crab, based on the Fishery Law, in December 1999. Fishing is prohibited for the 5-year period from 2000 to 2004. Public education programs were conducted to help local people learn about the basic biology of the horseshoe crab, to become aware of its importance and the necessity for conservation, and to empower them to actively participate in the conservation of this species. In addition, a horseshoe crab conservation program has also been incorporated as an element of the local ecotourism industry. Biotechnology business opportunities that may be created as a result of viable horseshoe crab populations will also be promoted.  相似文献

Sialyl Lewis X ganglioside analogues containing 4-deoxy-, 6-deoxy-, and 4,6-dideoxy-d-galactopyranose in place ofd-galactopyranose have been synthesized. Glycosylations of 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl 2,6-di-O-benzyl--d-galactopyranoside and 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl -d-fucopyranoside with the phenyl 2-thioglycoside derivative of sialic acid, usingN-iodosuccinimide (NIS)-trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) as the promoter in acetonitrile, gave the desired 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl sialyl--(23)--d-galactopyranoside and--d-fucopyranoside, respectively. The sialylgalactose derivative obtained was then modified to 4-deoxy and 4,6-dideoxy derivatives. These were converted, byO-benzoylation, transformation of the 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl group to trichloroacetimidates, and introduction of the methylthio group with methylthiomethysilane, into the corresponding glycosyl donors, which were then coupled with 2-(trimethylsilyl)ethylO-(2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl--l-fucopyranosyl)-(13)-O-(2-acetamido-6-O-benzyl-2-deoxy--d-glucopyranosyl)-(13)-2,4,6- tri-O-benzyl--d-galactopyranoside in the presence of dimethyl(methylthio)sulfonium triflate (DMTST). The resulting pentasaccharides were each converted to the corresponding -trichloroacetimidates, which, on coupling with (2S, 3R, 4E)-2-azido-3-O-benzoyl-4-octadecene-1,3-diol, gave the desired sphingosine derivatives. We studied the chemical and optical changes inthe dissolved organic matter (DOM) from twofreshwater lakes and a Sphagnum bog afterexposure to solar radiation. Stable carbonisotopes and solid-state 13C-NMR spectraof DOM were used together with optical andchemical data to interpret results fromexperimental exposures of DOM to sunlight andfrom seasonal observations of two lakes innortheastern Pennsylvania. Solar photochemicaloxidation of humic-rich bog DOM to smaller LMWcompounds and to DIC was inferred from lossesof UV absorbance, optical indices of molecularweight and changes in DOM chemistry. Experimentally, we observed a 1.2 enrichment in 13$C and a 47% loss in aromaticC functionality in bog DOM samples exposed tosolar UVR. Similar results were observed inthe surface waters of both lakes. In latesummer hypolimnetic water in humic LakeLacawac, we observed 3 to 4.5enrichments in 13C and a 30% increase inaromatic C relative to early spring valuesduring spring mixing. These changes coincidedwith increases in molecular weight and UVabsorbance. Anaerobic conditions of thehypolimnion in Lake Lacawac suggest thatmicrobial metabolism may be turning overallochthonous C introduced during springmixing, as well as autochthonous C. Thismetabolic activity produces HMW DOM during thesummer, which is photochemically labile andisotopically distinct from allochthonous DOM orautochthonous DOM. These results suggest bothphotooxidation of allochthonous DOM in theepilimnion and autotrophic production of DOM bybacteria in the hypolimnion cause seasonaltrends in the UV absorbance of lakes.  相似文献

The concentration of the C2–C5 carboxylic acids in the water column and sediment of shallow, eutrophic, drainage channels (Lewes Brooks, UK) were measured by gas chromatography. The concentrations of these acids were negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen. The highest concentrations of acetate (up to 200 M), propanoate (up to 38 M) and butanoate (up to 1.2 M) were measured during the summer in the water above the sediment, which became hypoxic during this period. Both acetate and propanoate concentrations declined at night. High concentrations of the acids were also recorded in reedbeds, which were also hypoxic. Only acetate was detected in the sediment pore water (up to 168 M). The -anomer of glucose relative to the -anomer was more rapidly metabolized into lactate by rat erythrocytes at 37° C (/ ratio = ca. 1.3): the amounts of - and -D-glucose metabolized into lactate during 3 min were 0.21 and 0.27 mol/gHb, respectively. Also, the transport of -D-glucose into erythrocytes was more rapid than that of -D-glucose: the amounts of - and -D-glucose transported into erythrocytes during 3 min were approximately 3.5 and 5.0 mol/gHb, respectively. Glucose phosphorylation by rat erythrocyte hexokinase (i.e., a possible rate-limiting step in glycolysis) occurred at higher velocities with the -anomer than with the a-anomer (/ ratio = 1.28). The Km value of hexokinase for either anomer of glucose was 53 M. The glucose concentrations in erythrocytes incubated with - and -D-glucose reached about 1 mM in 1 min, indicating that hexokinase is almost completely saturated with glucose within less than 1 min. The results suggest that glucose phosphorylation and glucose transport are major and minor determinants, respectively, for the anomeric preference of glucose utilization in rat erythrocytes.  相似文献

The effect of varying salinity on phenanthrene and glutamate mineralization was examined in sediments along a natural salinity gradient in an urban tidal river. Mineralization was measured by trapping14CO2 from sediment slurries dosed with trace levels of [14C]phenanthrene or [14C]glutamate. Sediments from three sites representing three salinity regimes (0, 15, and 30%.) were mixed with filtered column water from each site. Ambient phenanthrene concentrations were also determined to calculate phenanthrene mineralization rates. Rates of phenanthrene mineralization related significantly to increasing salinity along the transect as determined by linear regression analysis. Rates ranged from 1 ng/hour/g dry sediment at the freshwater site to > 16 ng/hour/g dry sediment at the 30 salinity site. Glutamate mineralization also increased from the freshwater to the marine site; however, the relationship to salinity was not statistically significant.To examine the effect of salinity on mineralizing activities, individual sediments were mixed with filtered water of the other two sites. Slurries were also made with artificial seawater composed of 0, 15, or 30 g NaCl/ liter to substitute for overlying water. Rates of phenanthrene mineralization in the 0 ambient salinity sediments were not affected by higher salinity waters. Activities in the 15 and 30 ambient salinity sediments, however, were significantly inhibited by incubation with 0 salinity water. The inhibition, in large part, appears to be due to the decreased NaCl concentration of the water phase. Glutamate mineralization was affected in a similar manner, but not as dramatically as phenanthrene mineralization. The results suggest that phenanthrene degraders in low salinity estuarine sediments subject to salt water intrusion are tolerant to a wide range of salinities but phenanthrene degradation in brackish waters is mainly a function of obligate marine microorganisms.  相似文献

Summary The development of non-specific resistance to tumors following stimulation with poly(maleic-acid-styrene)-conjugated neocarzinostatin (SMANCS), a polymer-conjugated derivative of neocarzinostatin, was investigated in mice. The growth of syngeneic solid tumors (Meth-A fibrosarcoma and RL 1 leukemia) inoculated into BALB/c mice was suppressed after one treatment with SMANCS at doses ranging from 0.14 mg/kg to 3.4 mg/kg i.v. 24 h before tumor implantation. Since previously observations concerning SMANCS have shown that it disappeared within 1.5 h after i.v. administration in mice and that it was inactivated quickly in plasma, SMANCS evidently inhibited tumor growth by mediating non-specific resistance. In addition, the non-specific resistance to tumors stimulated by SMANCS could be passively transferred to untreated mice by serum which was shown to contain interferon (IFN) from 12 h to 20 h after SMANCS administration. However, the resistance was not produced by serum prepared from mice at 8 h or 32 h after administration presumably because of the observation that the interferon activity was only demonstrated from 12 h to 28 h after SMANCS stimulation. When the serum specimens were treated with anti-IFN- antiserum, the antitumor activity of the sera was abrogated. However, no significant change was detected in the antitumor activity of the specimens following treatment with anti-IFN-/ antiserum. Treatment of mice with SMANCS and anti-IFN- antiserum together resulted in the elimination of the non-specific resistance to tumors. The IFN induced in the sera of mice by SMANCS was shown to be 57% IFN- and 41% IFN-/. Half of the interferon produced in SMANCS-stimulated mice could be eliminated by treatment with anti-IFN-, and treatment of SMANCS-stimulated mice with both anti-IFN- and anti-IFN-/ antisera resulted in a total absence of detectable interferon. These findings suggest that while the administration of SMANCS induces both IFN- and IFN-/ production, in this case, it is only the former which mediates the non-specific resistance to tumors.  相似文献

The crustacean zooplankton communities of seven, small, eutrophic West Virginian impoundments were examined during midsummer. The more eutrophic lakes had as dominants, 2 cyclopoid, 1 calanoid, and 2 cladoceran species. Cluster analysis showed that the 4 more eutrophic lakes clustered together, further cluster analysis showed there was a very similar group of 5 species which characterized the most eutrophic lakes. Principal components analysis showed that the more eutrophic lakes were characterized by having more cyclopoids and cladocerans than calanoids. Niche breadth showed that the most often dominant species had much higher values than the species ohich could be considered secondary dominants.  相似文献

Summary With the concept of the unit membrane as a central theme, a number of current problems for the theory of membrane structures are discussed from the point of view of the physical chemist. In view of the wide variety of chemical compositions of membranes, some current opinions of the forces maintaining the integrity of membranes are of limited generality. The thermodynamic status of the membrane is discussed, and it is suggested that the new small-systems thermodynamics can be usefully employed as a conceptual basis for discussing fluctuations and phase-changes in membranes. Arguments are given to suggest that the lipid interior of membranes is more ordered and crystalline than is currently supposed. The role of water in membrane structures remains an enigma.  相似文献

A multivariate morphometric study of theCardamine pratensis group is presented, based on 84 population samples collected from the Carpathian and Pannonian area in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, and Romania. Among the multivariate methods, principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and classificatory and canonical discriminant analysis were used. The analysis of chromosome numbers from all populations studied showed wide variation. The morphometric study showed that not all groups of populations characterised by their chromosome numbers and geographical criteria are morphologically, and thus taxonomically, distinguishable. Besides the morphologically well characterised speciesCardamine dentata andC. rivularis, the following species were recognised in the area studied:C. matthioli, C. majovskii andC. pratensis. We investigated aquatic macrophytes, water quality, and phytoplankton biomass and species composition in three shallow lakes with different levels of vegetation cover and nutrient concentration in Kushiro Moor, during August 2000. Trapa japonica can live in a wide range of nutrient levels. This species forms an environment with a steeper extinction of light, higher concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), lower concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO) near the bottom, and lower concentrations of nitrate+nitrite and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) than other vegetation types. The pH was much higher in a Polygonum amphibium community, and the DO near the bottom did not decrease compared to a T.japonica community in the summer. The relationship between chlorophyll a and the limiting nutrient (total phosphorus (TP) when total nitrogen (TN):TPis 10 and TN/10 when TN:TP is <10) significantly differed between lakes with and without submerged vegetation. The chlorophyll a concentrations at a given nutrient level were significantly lower in water with submerged macrophytes than in water without them. Correspondence analysis showed that the difference in phytoplankton community structure across sites was largely due to the presence or absence of submerged macrophytes, and the ordination of phytoplankton species in the lakes with submerged macrophytes is best explained by environmental gradients of TN, chlorophyll, pH and SRP.  相似文献

Sediment (0.5 mm–2.0 mm grain size) was incubated in nylon bags (200 m mesh) below the water table in the channel and in two transects of shallow wells perpendicular to the banks (to 18 m) of a third-order stream during August, 1987. One transect of wells drained steep old-growth forest, and the other a steep 23 year-old clear-cut partially regenerated in alder. At approximately 6-week intervals between October, 1987, and June, 1988, bags were retrieved. Total exchangeable ammonium was determined on sediment, and dissolved oxygen, nitrate and ammonium were determined in stream and well water. Exchangeable ammonium ranged from 10 eq/100 g of sediment in the stream where nitrification potential and subsurface exchange with stream water were high, to 115 eq/100 g sediment 18 m inland where channel water-groundwater mixing and nitrification potential were both low. Sorbed ammonium was highest during summer/autumn base flow and lowest during winter storm flow. Both channel and well water contained measurable dissolved oxygen at all times. Ammonium concentration was typically < 10 g-N/L in channel water, increased with distance inland, but did not exceed 365 g-N/L at any site. Nitrate concentration was typically higher in well water than channel water. Nitrate levels increased dramatically in wells at the base of the clear-cut following the onset of autumn rains. The results indicate a potential for temporary storage of ammonium on riparian sediments which may influence biotic nitrogen cycling, and alter the timing and form of dissolved inorganic nitrogen transport from the watershed.  相似文献

The properties of the -2-l-fucosyltransferases in submaxillary gland preparations from blood group ABH secrefors and non-secretors were compared. The level of activity in the non-secretor gland homogenates amounted to about 5% only of that found in the secretor gland preparations. The enzymes from the two sources differed in solubility properties, charge and affinities for donor and acceptor substrates. The enzyme from secretor glands showed a preference for acceptors with Type 1 [d-galactosyl(1–3)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine] structures whereas the enzyme from non-secretor glands had a preference for Type 2 [d-galactosyl(1–4)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine] structures.These results demonstrate that expression of the secretor gene (Se) is associated with a molecular form of the -2-l-fucosyltransferase that is different from the species present in the same tissue when theSe gene is not expressed.  相似文献

Summary The effects of destruxin B, a host-specific toxin of Alternaria brassicae that causes black spot disease in oilseed brassicas, were studied on in vitro pollen germination and pollen-tube growth of Brassica campestris var brown sarson, B. juncea, B. napus cvs Westar and Cresor, B. nigra and Sinapis alba. Pollen grains of B. nigra, B. juncea and B. campestris were the most sensitive and those of S. alba the least sensitive to the toxin. Effects of the toxin were also studied on the leaves of these species, and the degree of sensitivity of leaves of different species was comparable to that of their pollen grains. The results on the responses of pollen grains as well as leaves to the toxin are in agreement with the degree of susceptibility/resistance of these species to A. brassicae reported in the literature, indicating that the genes imparting susceptibility/restistance are expressed in the pollen, a prerequisite for pollen selection. Results are also presented which show that the toxin fed to the cut end of isolated inflorescence axis is readily taken up by the developing pollen and results in the inhibition of germination of susceptible pollen. This technique offers a simple and effective method for application of selection pressure to eliminate pollen grains susceptible to the toxin from effecting fertilization.  相似文献
