The majority of organic chemicals identified so far in the sea are pesticides and products of technical use; most contain chlorine. Only a limited amount of the actual pollutant load is detectable because few data for “unconventional ” pollutants are available. In view of the considerable structural variety of the large number of chemicals produced, there is a need for prediction measurements of bioconcentration and toxic effects. Physico-chemical data may be used for predicting bioconcentration and life-cycle toxicity tests for the estimation of safe levels. The degree of biomagnification via food chains increases with half lives of the pollutants. When comparing pollutant concentrations with toxicological data it becomes apparent that estuaries and coastal areas deserve special concern, whereas pollutant levels of open ocean waters are unlikely to endanger marine life at present.  相似文献

Abstract

In order to facilitate the informed participation of citizens in the governmental review process, a model is developed to assist students in attempting to establish the biological basis for environmental health standards.

When establishing a standard, the high-risk (or hypersusceptible) segments of the human population should be identified. By setting a standard which protects these portions of the population, the less susceptible portion of the population will also be protected. Factors to be considered when identifying high-risk groups include: hereditary traits, age, nutrition, eating habits, pregnancy, health status, stress, and physical activity.

Whenever possible, studies should be selected as a basis for the standard which have utilized experimental animals which most closely simulate the human population at high risk to the pollutant. Epidemiological studies, when available, should also be utilized as well as controlled studies using human subjects. Extrapolation of data from these types of studies is most reliable. These data can then be utilized to determine a safe level of intake and assimilation of pollutants in the high risk groups. Calculations to determine safe exposure levels vary depending on whether the pollutant is cumulative or not. Once these safe levels are calculated, standards for pollutants can then be recommended for air, food, or water.  相似文献

Microbiological aspects of surfactant use for biological soil remediation   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Biodegradation of hydrophobic organic compounds in polluted soil is a process involving interactions among soil particles, pollutants, water, and micro-organisms. Surface-active agents or surfactants are compounds that may affect these interactions, and the use of these compounds may be a means of overcoming the problem of limited bioavailability of hydrophobic organic pollutants in biological soil remediation. The effects of surfactants on the physiology of micro-organisms range from inhibition of growth due to surfactant toxicity to stimulation of growth caused by the use of surfactants as a co-substrate. The most important effect of surfactants on the interactions among soil and pollutant is stimulation of mass transport of the pollutant from the soil to the aqueous phase. This can be caused by three different mechanisms: emulsification of liquid pollutant, micellar solubilisation, and facilitated transport. The importance of these mechanisms with respect to the effect of surfactants on bioavailability is reviewed for hydrophobic organic pollutants present in different physical states. The complexity of the effect of surfactants on pollutant bioavailability is reflected by the results in the literature, which range from stimulation to inhibition of desorption and biodegradation of polluting compounds. No general trends can be found in these results. Therefore, more research is necessary to make the application of surfactants a standard tool in biological soil remediation. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Pollution represents a major threat to biodiversity. A wide class of pollutants tends to accumulate within organisms and propagate within communities via trophic interactions. Thus the final effects of accumulable pollutants may be determined by the structure of food webs and not only by the susceptibility of their constituent species. Species within real food webs are typically arranged into modules, which have been proposed to be determinants of network stability. In this study we evaluate the effect of network modularity and species richness on long‐term species persistence in communities perturbed by pollutant stress. We built model food webs with different levels of modularity and used a bioenergetic model to project the dynamics of species. Further, we modeled the dynamics of bioaccumulated and environmental pollutants. We found that modularity promoted the stability of food webs subjected to pollutant stress. We also found that richer food webs were more robust at all modularity levels. Nevertheless, modularity did not promote stability of communities facing a perturbation that shared most features with the pollutant perturbation, but does not spread through trophic interactions. The positive effect of both modularity and species richness on species persistence was cancelled and even reversed when the structure of food web departed from a realistic body size distribution or a hierarchical feeding structure. Our results support the idea that modularity implies important dynamic consequences for communities facing pollution, highlighting a main role of network structure on ecosystem stability.  相似文献

The effect of air pollutants on physiological processes in plants   总被引:12,自引:1,他引:11
Abstract. Important physiological processes, photosynthesis, respiration, carbon allocation and stomatal function are known to be affected by air pollutants. A wide range in sensitivity of photosynthesis both within and between species is evident from the literature for the pollutants sulphur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxide and hydrogen fluoride. Some of this variation is clearly due to genetic factors, but much is in response to differences in environmental conditions both prior to and during fumigation. Exposure of plants to mixtures of pollutants generally reduced the threshold at which effects were first detected and increased the level of inhibitory responses. In the majority of studies on stomatal responses to air pollutants, opening occurs at low concentrations, below the threshold for effects on photosynthesis, and closure occurs at injurious concentrations; this latter response often following the inhibition of photosynthesis. Effects on carbon allocation have been reported in response to air pollutants. Changes usually favour leaf development over root growth, which can compensate for a decline in net assimilation rate up to a certain point but may limit water uptake from soils with low moisture content. Future research into physiological effects of air pollutants should incorporate an integrated approach in which both key physiological parameters and growth parameters are measured together with estimates of the effective dose of pollutant. In this way, the underlying mechanisms to changes in growth and development will be more fully understood.  相似文献

One of the useful biological tools for environmental management is the measurement of biomarkers whose changes are related to the exposure to chemicals or environmental stress. Since these responses might vary with different contaminants or depending on the pollutant concentration reached in the organism, the support of bioaccumulation data is needed to prevent false conclusions. In this study, several persistent organic pollutants -- 23 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, 11 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), six dichlorodiphenyltricholroethane (DDT) relatives, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), chlorpyrifos and its oxidized metabolite -- and some herbicides (lindane and the isomers alpha, beta, delta; terbutilazine; alachlor; metolachlor) were measured in the soft tissues of the freshwater mollusc Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) from 25 sampling sites in the Italian portions of the sub-alpine great lakes along with the measure of ethoxyresorufin dealkylation (EROD) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The linkage between bioaccumulation and biomarker data allowed us to create site-specific environmental quality indexes towards man-made chemicals. This classification highlighted three different degrees of xenobiotic contamination of the Italian sub-alpine great lakes: a high water quality in Lake Lugano with negligible pollutant levels and no effects on enzyme activities, an homogeneous poor quality for Lakes Garda, Iseo and Como, and the presence of some xenobiotic point-sources in Lake Maggiore, whose ecological status could be jeopardized, also due to the heavy DDT contamination revealed since 1996.  相似文献

The effect of food concentration on the phenotypic responseof life history traits to two predator kairomones was investigatedin Daphnia. For the experiment, one clone of Daphnia galeatawas used as the prey organism and solutions containing infochemicals(kairomones) of Chaoborus (phantommidge) and Perca (perch) simulatedthe presence of potential predators. The combined effect offood level and predator kairomone on phenotypic plasticity ofDaphnia life history is complex. At low food levels, the responsesin life history traits to kairomones are enhanced. For example,in the Perca treatment, this leads to a younger age at firstreproduction. The presence of Chaoborus kairomone decreasessurvival so that death often occurs before reproduction is reached. This results in a strong decrease in the intrinsic rate of populationincrease and might contribut to the pronounced summer declineof some Daphnia populations during periods of food shortage.  相似文献

The fungal spoilage of ingredients of food manufacture is an economic problem, often causes product loss and may constitute a health hazard. To effectively combat fungal food spoilage, a mechanistic understanding of tolerance for, and adaptation to, the preservation method used is crucial. Both are dependent on the genetic make-up and growth history of the organism. In the post-genomic era we are arriving at a situation in which, in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae, physiological data, classical molecular biology and whole-genome responses can be combined to obtain explanatory and predictive models for growth. For food spoilage fungi we have not yet reached such a level of understanding, but we may use the knowledge gained for S. cerevisiae for the prevention of spoilage.  相似文献

Interactions between pollutants and suboptimal environmental conditions can have severe consequences for the toxicity of pollutants, yet are still poorly understood. To identify patterns across environmental conditions and across fitness-related variables we exposed Enallagma cyathigerum damselfly larvae to the pesticide chlorpyrifos at two food levels or at two temperatures and quantified four fitness-related variables (larval survival, development time, mass at emergence and adult cold resistance). Food level and temperature did not affect survival in the absence of the pesticide, yet the pesticide reduced survival only at the high temperature. Animals reacted to the pesticide by accelerating their development but only at the high food level and at the low temperature; at the low food level, however, pesticide exposure resulted in a slower development. Chlorpyrifos exposure resulted in smaller adults except in animals reared at the high food level. Animals reared at the low food level and at the low temperature had a higher cold resistance which was not affected by the pesticide. In summary our study highlight that combined effects of exposure to chlorpyrifos and the two environmental conditions (i) were mostly interactive and sometimes even reversed in comparison with the effect of the environmental condition in isolation, (ii) strongly differed depending on the fitness-related variable under study, (iii) were not always predictable based on the effect of the environmental condition in isolation, and (iv) bridged metamorphosis depending on which environmental condition was combined with the pesticide thereby potentially carrying over from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems. These findings are relevant when extrapolating results of laboratory tests done under ideal environmental conditions to natural communities.  相似文献

Pollutants are suspected to contribute to the etiology of obesity and related metabolic disorders. Apart from occupational exposure which concerns a subset of chemicals, humans are mostly exposed to a large variety of chemicals, all life-long and at low doses. Food ingestion is a major route of exposure and it is suggested that pollutants have a worsened impact when combined with a high-fat diet. In the experimental studies described herein, we aimed to add further evidence on the metabolic impact of food pollutants using a recently set up model in which mice are life-long fed a high-fat/high-sucrose diet (HFSD) with/without common food pollutants shown to exhibit metabolic disrupting activities. Specifically, this mixture comprised bisphenol A, dioxin, polychlorobiphenyl PCB153, and phthalate and was added in HFSD at doses resulting in mice exposure at the Tolerable Daily Intake dose range for each pollutant. We herein focused on the 7-week-old females which exhibited early signs of obesity upon HFSD feeding. We observed no signs of toxicity and no additional weight gain following exposure to the mixture but alleviated HFSD-induced glucose intolerance in the absence of alteration of gluconeogenesis and steatosis. It suggested that the observed metabolic improvement was more likely due to effects on muscle and/or adipose tissues rather than on the liver. Consistently, female mice exhibited enhanced lean/fat mass ratio and skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity. Moreover, expression levels of inflammatory markers were reduced in adipose tissue at 7 but enhanced at 12 weeks of age in agreement with the inverse alterations of glucose tolerance observed at these ages upon pollutant exposure in the HFSD-fed females. Collectively, these data suggest apparent biphasic effects of pollutants upon HFSD feeding along with obesity development. These effects were not observed in males and may depend on interactions between diet and pollutants.  相似文献

Human activities have led to massive influxes of pollutants, degrading the habitat of species and simplifying their biodiversity. However, the interaction between food web complexity, pollution and stability is still poorly understood. In this study we evaluate the effect exerted by accumulable pollutants on the relationship between complexity and stability of food webs. We built model food webs with different levels of richness and connectance, and used a bioenergetic model to project the dynamics of species biomasses. Further, we developed appropriate expressions for the dynamics of bioaccumulated and environmental pollutants. We additionally analyzed attributes of organisms’ and communities as determinants of species persistence (stability). We found that the positive effect of complexity on stability was enhanced as pollutant stress increased. Additionally we showed that the number of basal species and the maximum trophic level shape the complexity–stability relationship in polluted systems, and that in‐degree of consumers determines species extinction in polluted environments. Our study indicates that the form of biodiversity and the complexity of interaction networks are essential to understand and project the effects of pollution and other ecosystem threats.  相似文献

A mechanistic physiological model of the appendicularian Oikopleura dioica has been built to represent its three feeding processes (filtration, ingestion and assimilation). The mathematical formulation of these processes is based on laboratory observations from the literature, and tests different hypotheses. This model accounts for house formation dynamics, the food storage capacity of the house and the gut throughput dynamics. The half-saturation coefficient for ingestion resulting from model simulations is approximately 28 and is independent of the weight of the organism. The maximum food intake for ingestion is also a property of the model and depends on the weight of the organism. Both are in accordance with data from the literature. The model also provides a realistic representation of carbon accumulation within the house. The modelled half-saturation coefficient for assimilation is approximately 15 and is also independent of the weight of the organism. Modelled gut throughput dynamics are based on faecal pellet formation by gut compaction. Model outputs showed that below a food concentration of 30 , the faecal pellet weight should represent a lower proportion of the body weight of the organism, meaning that the faecal pellet formation is not driven by gut filling. Simulations using fluctuating environmental food availability show that food depletion is not immediately experienced by the organism but that it occurs after a lag time because of house and gut buffering abilities. This lag time duration lasts at least 30 minutes and can reach more than 2 hours, depending on when the food depletion occurs during the house lifespan.  相似文献

Almost all recent extinction of species or subspecies on islands comes from human activities. On the other hand, in local populations there is much natural extinction and immigration, i.e. turnover, on small islands. Most of this turnover occurs in locally rare species, and attests to the phenomenon of minimum viable population size. The MacArthur-Wilson theory is based on this turnover which, from an ecological point of view, is generally trivial. More useful theories of minimum viable population size are being developed. Rarity is the precursor of extinction, and species can be rare in several ways. Models of these phenomena are still primitive, particularly those that relate habitat availability to population density. Models of interactive communities show phenomena that may be relevant to the understanding of extinction in the geological record. Lotka-Volterra equations indicate considerable sensitivity to invasions, sometimes producing a cascade of extinction. Chemostat equations show that the behaviour of food chains can change dramatically with small changes in parameters, suggesting that small environmental effects can sometimes cause large ecological changes, including extinctions, in interactive biotic communities.  相似文献

Marine Ecosystem Testing Units (METU) is an experimental design for integrating responses of communities of marine organisms to low level pollutants under natural conditions of temperature, weather, season, precipitation, sunlight, etc. Ninety-six testing units are arranged in a regimen for pollutant exposure and systematic sampling. Organisms harvested are sorted and enumerated first to major taxa, subsequently to species level. Data are subjected to multi-variate statistical analysis to elucidate relative effects of pollutant, duration of test (harvest), season, and type of organism. Sampling is replicated in time and space. The first year of operation has demonstrated distinct responses to chlorination at levels below chemical detectability.  相似文献

Whenever possible, total clean-up of soils and sediments should have priority over methods to contain the pollutants in the soil environment in a way which reduces their potential eco-toxicological effects. Nevertheless, often a very important fraction of the pollutant remains non-available to the cleaning process, either physico-chemical or biological. This constitutes a major obstacle for both environmental technologists and legislators. Yet, the concept of non-extractable organic residues is well accepted in the EU-legislation for pesticides. In this context, an assessment is made to bind organic pollutants to soil. Physical sorption (comprising surface adsorption, absorption and migration in micro- and nanopores) and chemical binding are examined in terms of quantities and kinetics. Chemical binding offers at present no direct possibilities for practice. Making toxic pollutants less bioavailable by increasing physical sorption represents a pragmatic approach to contractors and regulators. For organic pollutants with acceptable concentration in the soil solution of the order of 1 mg/l, a sorptive loading of the order of 10 000 mg pollutant per kg activated carbon respectively organic matter appears a workable assumption. In case of toxic substances such as pesticides which have a 1000 times lower acceptable level, a sorptive loading of up to 10 mg organic pollutant per kg sorbent can be used. Non-bioavailable pollutants can be considered as representing no direct harm to the environment. In practice, the application of up to 100–200 kg dry weight quality compost per ton dry weight soil or alternatively the supplementation of other sorbents such as powdered activated carbon (up to 100 kg per ton soil) offer possibilities to cost-effective remediation of organic pollutants. Yet, aspects of worst-case ecotoxicology as e.g. excessive leaching with dissolved humic substances or ingestion of soil containing substantial amounts of poorly extractable contaminants by human and soil organisms, need to be examined.  相似文献

Ecotoxicology and environmental epidemiology require an intimate understanding of the relationship between exposure of a population to a pollutant and the subsequent biological effects. This article summarizes two relatively new and powerful techniques to examine both exposure and response to environmental pollutants which build upon an increased understanding of how particular classes of chemicals elicit toxicity at the molecular level. The genetic reporter assay can be used to examine the exposure and potential toxicity of environmental samples. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is an exquisitely sensitive and adaptable procedure to examine early events, i.e. biomarkers, that might be indicative of exposure and/or sensitivity to a chemical insult. Taken together, these assays are important new tools in assessing the exposure and risk of human and wildlife populations to such important pollutants as dioxins, PCBs, oestrogenic and anti-oestrogenic compounds, phthalate esters, DDT metabolites and heavy metals.  相似文献

1. Allometric theory makes specific predictions about how density, and consequently biomass, scale with organism size within trophic levels, across trophic levels and across food webs. 2. Diversity-yield relationships suggest that more diverse food webs can sometimes support more biomass through mechanisms involving niche complementarity or selection effects that are sometimes attributed to organism size. 3. We combine the above two approaches and show that, generally, density and biomass scale with organism size within and between trophic levels as predicted by allometric theory. Further, food webs converged in total biomass despite persistent differences in the composition and size of the organisms among food webs; species richness explained deviations from the constant yield of biomass expected from size-abundance relationships. 4. Our results suggest that organism size plays only a transient role in controlling community biomass because population increases or decreases lead to rapid convergence in biomass. Species richness affects community biomass independently by effectively increasing the mass of organisms that can be supported in a given productivity regime.  相似文献

Surfactants are amphiphilic compounds which can reduce surface and interfacial tensions by accumulating at the interface of immiscible fluids and increase the solubility, mobility, bioavailability and subsequent biodegradation of hydrophobic or insoluble organic compounds. Chemically synthesized surfactants are commonly used in the petroleum, food and pharmaceutical industries as emulsifiers and wetting agents. Biosurfactants produced by some microorganisms are becoming important biotechnology products for industrial and medical applications due to their specific modes of action, low toxicity, relative ease of preparation and widespread applicability. They can be used as emulsifiers, de-emulsifiers, wetting and foaming agents, functional food ingredients and as detergents in petroleum, petrochemicals, environmental management, agrochemicals, foods and beverages, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, and in the mining and metallurgical industries. Addition of a surfactant of chemical or biological origin accelerates or sometimes inhibits the bioremediation of pollutants. Surfactants also play an important role in enhanced oil recovery by increasing the apparent solubility of petroleum components and effectively reducing the interfacial tensions of oil and water in situ. However, the effects of surfactants on bioremediation cannot be predicted in the absence of empirical evidence because surfactants sometimes stimulate bioremediation and sometimes inhibit it. For medical applications, biosurfactants are useful as antimicrobial agents and immunomodulatory molecules. Beneficial applications of chemical surfactants and biosurfactants in various industries are discussed in this review.  相似文献

Estuarine species exposed to diffuse contaminants might trigger either positive or negative feedbacks in many biological scales. Their life history traits performing at different biological organization levels could propose an organism as a useful indicator of environmental pollution, mainly addressed as sensitive or tolerant species. To track the effects of contaminants from the molecular to the population level of the polychaete Laeonereis acuta we utilize a framework of biomarkers. For this purpose we assessed the L. acuta frequency of micronuclei at the molecular level, the body size and biomass at individual level, and the production-to-biomass ratio at population level in five urbanized and five non-urbanized estuaries in southern Brazil. L. acuta had significantly varying positive and negative feedbacks between urbanized and non-urbanized estuaries at multiple biological scales. These generalized effects in all biological organization scales indicate a pollution impact on the polychaete. The main responses accounted for individuals becoming lengthy and weighty, but with molecular damage. The L. acuta allocation of energy to body enlargement in polluted environments, and a consequent reduced population turnover, contradicts the expected from an opportunist species. The damages in DNA and the internal strategies of individuals, as antioxidant defense mechanisms, could favor resistance of the population and tolerance to pollutants. All of these characteristics induce bioaccumulation and could cause bottom-up pollution transfer compromising the estuarine food web. These results, ascertain that L. acuta could be considered as a tolerant species, instead of an opportunistic, and as a useful indicator of environmental pollution in estuaries.  相似文献
