In Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) the thickness and lipid content of blubber (the integument's specialized hypodermis) varies across ontogeny and with reproductive and nutritional state. Because the integument comprises up to 25% of total body mass in this species, ontogenetic changes in its lipid content may influence whole body buoyancy. The density and volume of the integument were measured and its buoyancy calculated across an ontogenetic series of dolphins and in pregnant and emaciated adults (total n= 45). Regional differences between the metabolically labile trunk integument and the structural tailstock integument were also investigated. Mean densities of both trunk and tailstock integument were similar across life history categories (trunk = 1,040.7 ± 14.1 kg/m3; tailstock = 1,077.1 ± 21.2 kg/m3) and were statistically similar to the density of seawater (1,026 kg/m3). The mean buoyant force of integument from the trunk (−1.01 ± 1.74 N) and tailstock (−0.30 ± 0.21 N) did not vary significantly across ontogeny. In contrast, pregnancy and emaciation did influence the integument's buoyancy, which ranged between 9 N and −45 N in these categories. Although neutral during growth, the integument's contribution to whole body buoyancy can be influenced by an individual's reproductive and nutritional status.  相似文献

Histochemical methods were used to study the localization and activity of acid and alkaline phosphatases, ATP-ase, 5-nucleotidase, and glucose-6-phosphatase in tissues of the mature form of Hymenolepis nana. Considerable differences in activity and localization of particular enzymes were observed in the organs of the parasite. The results obtained permit the statement that the integument is the most active enzymatically; in connection with the literature data, this gives grounds for the thesis that the integument of the cestodes functions as an absorbent-digestive organ.  相似文献

The symbiotic polychaetes of the genus Osedax living on the bones of whale carcasses have become known as bone‐eating worms. It is believed that whale bones are the source of nutrition for those gutless worms and that fatty acids are produced by their symbionts and transferred to the host. However, the symbionts are of the heterotrophic group Oceanospirillales and as such are not able to synthesize organic carbon de novo. Also, they are not housed in close contact to the bone material. We studied the ultrastructure of the integument overlying the symbiont housing trophosome in the ovisac region and the roots region and of the symbiont‐free trunk region of Osedax to investigate the host's possible contribution in feeding for the whole symbiosis. The epidermis differs conspicuously between the three regions investigated and clearly points to being correlated with different functions carried out by those regions. The ultrastructure of the integument of the root region changed towards the ovisac region and corresponds with the change of the ultrastructure observed in the Osedax trophosome. We suggest that the epidermis in the root region is tightly linked to bone degradation and nutrient uptake. The trunk region possess two types of unicellular gland cells, at least one of which seems to be involved in secretion of the gelatinous tube of adult Osedax females. J. Plasma membrane-associated phosphatase activity was found in integumentary cells of developing tobacco ovules from the megaspore tetrad stage to seed maturity. Enzyme activity is greatest in the innermost layers of the integument from the mature megagametophyte stage on. The egg, zygote, and synergids almost totally lack plasma membrane-associated reaction product, while the antipodals show some activity at their chalazal ends. The endosperm has much plasma membrane-associated phosphatase activity in most of its cells during development, but it is primarily the outermost plasma membranes of the surface cells of the embryo that have associated reaction product. It is concluded that the plasma membrane-associated phosphatase activity is related to active transport of assimilates and that the integument is the most important site of active transport in the young ovule. After fertilization, in addition to the innermost layers of the integument, the endosperm and the outermost cells of the embryo become involved in active transport, which continues to seed maturity.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Certain aspects of development that are indicativeof changing functional and ecological capabilities are reviewedfor six different organ systems in the northern anchovy, Engraulismordax, and other teleosts. The six organ systems are the integument,the lateral line system, the eye, the digestive tract, the gasbladder, and the trunk musculature. The integument developsgradually but also has transient specialized cells during thelarval period. The lateral line system is functional at hatchingand then elaborates by recruitment proportional to growth duringthe larval period. The eyes are capable of photopic binocularvision when feeding starts, and later gradually develop a scotopicsystem. The digestive tract develops a capacity for proteindigestion and filtering during the mid and late larval period.The gas bladder gradually develops an expansion capability bymuscle differentiation after initial inflation. The trunk musculaturedifferentiates and recruits two fiber types that gradually supercedethe embryonic musculature during the larval period. Thus muchof the development of organs in the anchovy after hatching orafter feeding starts can be characterized as initial differentiationand then continued recruitment of specialized cell arrays. Behaviorpatterns appear to develop in conjunction with such recruitments.This may apply to fishes generally, but pattern and tempo ofdevelopment must differ among species. Brief comparison of theanchovy and the Pacific mackerel, which has a more rapid anddirect development, suggests that some of the differences inthe two types of larvae relate to the marked difference in feedingmodes of the adult stages.  相似文献

Mature seeds of Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica napus contain complex mixtures of aliphatic monomers derived from non-extractable lipid polyesters. Most of the monomers are deposited in the seed coat, and their compositions suggest the presence of both cutin and suberin layers. The location of these polyesters within the seed coat, and their contributions to permeability of the seed coat and other functional properties are unknown. Polyester deposition was followed over Brassica seed development and distinct temporal patterns of monomer accumulation were observed. Octadecadiene-1,18-dioate, the major leaf cutin monomer, was transiently deposited. In contrast, the saturated dicarboxylates maintained a constant level during seed desiccation, whereas the fatty alcohols and saturated omega-hydroxy fatty acids continually increased. Dissection and analysis of Brassica seed coats showed that suberization is not specific to the chalaza. Analysis of the Arabidopsis ap2-7 mutant suggested that suberin monomers are preferentially associated with the outer integument. Several Arabidopsis knockout mutant lines for genes involved in polyester biosynthesis (att1, fatB and gpat5) were examined for seed monomer load and composition. The variance in polyester monomers of these mutants is correlated with dye penetration assays. Furthermore, stable transgenic plants expressing promoter::YFP fusions showed ATT1 promoter activity in the inner integument, whereas GPAT5 promoter is active in the outer integument. Together, the Arabidopsis data indicated that there is a suberized layer associated with the outer integument and a cutin-like polyester layer associated with the inner seed coat.  相似文献

The rotifer integument is a well‐described syncytium that contains an apical intracytoplasmic lamina (ICL) that functions for both skeletal support and muscle insertion. To date, there is limited information on the structure of the integument in species of Gnesiotrocha, a diverse subclade of Monogononta that consists of solitary, colonial, sessile, and planktonic species. In this study, we examined the ultrastructure of the integument in the colonial rotifer Sinantherina socialis to determine how it corresponds to that of other monogononts. The integument of S. socialis was broadly similar to that of other rotifers, consisting of a thickened glycocalyx, multilaminate ICL, and syncytial epidermis. However, it was different in several regards. The ICL consisted of three distinct layers from apical to basal: layer 1 consisted of at least two electron‐dense laminae; layer 2 was a thickened matrix of amorphous, electron‐dense material or was fibrous; and layer 3 was an electron‐dense lamina of varying thickness that covered the underlying syncytium. Significantly, layers 1 and 2 formed a ridge‐and‐groove like system of finger‐like projections across the trunk surface that has not been observed in other rotifers. A voluminous syncytial cytoplasm (up to 3 μm thick) was present beneath the ICL and was mostly electron lucent and with few organelles. Bundles of potential microtubules were scattered throughout the syncytium. We hypothesize that the voluminous cytoplasm with microtubules serves as skeletal support for the rotifer's sessile lifestyle, while the external ridges may function as a texture‐based deterrent to predators, or serves to trap secretions from the species' defensive glands. Basally, the epidermis was highly folded and bordered by a thin basal lamina that separated the plasmalemma from the blastocoel. Membrane‐bound vesicles were present throughout the integument's cytoplasm and are hypothesized to function in the secretion of extracellular matrix and in the maintenance of the ICL.  相似文献

The external morphology and distribution of the integumentalorgans of the final-stage phyllosoma of the rock lobster Jasusedwardsii were examined. Seven types of organs were recognizedon the integument of the body trunk, antennules and antennae:plumose setae, simple setae, porous setae, aesthetasc setae,simple pores, dorsal cuticular organs and dome-shaped structures.The plumose setae and simple pores were abundant on the dorsalsurface of the cephalosome, abdomen and telson. The dorsal cuticularorgans were present only on the dorsal surface of the cephalosome,and the aesthetasc setae were restricted to the antennule. A comparison of the morphology of these organs with the senseorgans of other decapods with known function suggests that thedorsal surface of the body trunk is one of the major sites ofreception of near-field water movement in the Jasus phyllosoma.  相似文献

Caterpillars of the lycaenid butterfly, Liphyra brassolis, live inside the nests of arboreal weaver ants, Oecophylla smaragdina, and eat their brood. Observations of mature larvae suggest that they are impervious to relentless ant molestation, yet they lack sclerotized cuticular plates. We document a novel form of integumental defence that imparts protection from ant attack whilst maintaining the flexibility necessary to walk with a hydraulic skeleton. Analysis of the trunk integument and cuticular structures of early and late instars of L. brassolis using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and histology revealed three new setae types (disc, clavate, and lanceolate), as well as three new cuticular structures (pored sockets, cuticular pores, and cuticular domes). The unique cuticle is covered with lanceolate setae, which act as endocuticular struts, and overlapping scale‐like sockets, which form a hard, flexible integument. The imperfect armour of the early‐instar larvae suggests that abundant, putatively secretory pores are likely to be homologous to pore cupola organs (PCOs) found in other lycaenid larvae and thus may exude semiochemicals to allay ant aggression. The importance of these pores presumably wanes as structural (setal) cuticular defenses are reinforced in later instars, when adult ants have been observed attacking caterpillars to no avail. The caterpillar's antennae are unusual and seem to be involved in manipulating ant larvae into the caterpillar's mouth. Behavioural observations indicate that the dexterity of these structures is associated with eating ants (myrmecophagy).  相似文献

Repetitive exposures to altered gait and movement following lower-limb amputation (LLA) have been suggested to contribute to observed alterations in passive tissue properties and neuromuscular control in/surrounding the lumbar spine. These alterations, in turn, may affect the synergy between passive and active tissues during trunk movements. Eight males with unilateral LLA and eight non-amputation controls completed quasi-static trunk flexion–extension movements in seven distinct conditions of rotation in the transverse plane: 0° (sagittally-symmetric), ±15°, ±30°, and ±45° (sagittally-asymmetric). Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the bilateral lumbar erector spinae and lumbar kinematics were simultaneously recorded. Peak lumbar flexion and EMG-off angles were determined, along with the difference (“DIFF”) between these two angles and the magnitude of peak normalized EMG activities. Persons with unilateral LLA exhibited altered and asymmetric synergies between active and passive trunk tissues during both sagittally-symmetric and -asymmetric trunk flexion movements. Specifically, decreased and asymmetric passive contributions to trunk movements were compensated with increases in the magnitude and duration of active trunk muscle responses. Such alterations in trunk passive and active neuromuscular responses may result from repetitive exposures to abnormal gait and movement subsequent to LLA, and may increase the risk for LBP in this population.  相似文献

Two homologues of INNER NO OUTER (INO) in Nymphaea alba and N. colorata (Nymphaeaceae) were isolated and the expression pattern of the N. alba INO homologue NaINO was examined by in situ hybridization. The INO homologues obtained have a portion similar to INO in the predicted amino acid sequences between the conserved zinc finger-like and YABBY domains. In an in situ hybridization analysis, NaINO is expressed in the outer epidermis of the outer integument, inner integument, and the tip of the nucellus. The pattern observed in the outer integument is very similar to that of Arabidopsis thaliana, while the expression in the inner integument and nucellus is not observed in A. thaliana.Edited by G. Spinal stability is related to the recruitment and control of active muscle stiffness. Stochastic system identification techniques were used to calculate the effective stiffness and dynamics of the trunk during active trunk extension exertions. Twenty-one healthy adult subjects (10 males, 11 females) wore a harness with a cable attached to a servomotor such that isotonic flexion preloads of 100, 135, and 170 N were applied at the T10 level of the trunk. A pseudorandom stochastic force sequence (bandwidth 0-10 Hz, amplitude +/-30 N) was superimposed on the preload causing small amplitude trunk movements. Nonparametric impulse response functions of trunk dynamics were computed and revealed that the system exhibited underdamped second-order behavior. Second-order trunk dynamics were determined by calculating the best least-squares fit to the IRF. The quality of the model was quantified by comparing estimated and observed displacement variance accounted for (VAF), and quality of the second-order fits was calculated as a percentage and referred to as fit accuracy. Mean VAF and fit accuracy were 87.8 +/- 4.0% and 96.0 +/- 4.3%, respectively, indicating that the model accurately represented active trunk kinematic response. The accuracy of the kinematic representation was not influenced by preload or gender. Mean effective stiffness was 2.78 +/- 0.96 N/mm and increased significantly with preload (p < 0.001), but did not vary with gender (p = 0.425). Mean effective damping was 314 +/- 72 Ns/m and effective trunk mass was 37.0 +/- 9.3 kg. We conclude that stochastic system identification techniques should be used to calculate effective trunk stiffness and dynamics.  相似文献

Ovular development of Magnolia grandiflora was examined to determine the morphology of the outer integument. At the time the ovular primordium begins incurving, the outer integument is initiated subdermally, and later the inner integument arises from the dermal layer. Whereas the inner integument is annular, the outer integument is formed as a semiannular rim interrupted on the concave side of the funiculus. Later the outer integument becomes a hood-shaped envelope. The obturator is formed as a transversely elongate outgrowth on the concave side of the funiculus and intervenes in the gap of the outer integument. During further development the inner integument produces several distal lobes, and the outer integument becomes bilobed. The exostome is a transverse slit with a middle notch, formed by the outer integument and the obturator. Presumed wide occurrence of the hood-shaped outer integument in primitive families suggests that it is a primitive state. The outer integument is compared with the ovuliferous sporophylls of the glossopterid and caytonialean seed ferns.  相似文献

The epithelial cells of the integument of body, arms and tentacles of Sepia officinalis present on their apical membrane a well-organised brush border and show the morphological and histochemical characteristics of a typical absorptive epithelium. The ability of the integument to absorb amino acids was investigated both in the arms incubated in vitro and in a purified preparation of brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV). Autoradiographic pictures of the integument after incubation of the arms in sea-water with or without sodium, showed that proline intake was Na+-dependent, whereas leucine intake appeared to be a largely cation-independent process. Time course experiments of labelled leucine, proline and lysine uptakes in BBMV evidenced that these amino acids are accumulated within the vesicles in the presence of an inwardly directed sodium gradient. The sodium-driven accumulation proves that cationic and neutral amino acids are taken up by the apical membrane of the epithelium of Sepia integument through a secondary active mechanism. For leucine, a 90% inhibition of the uptake was recorded in the presence of a large excess of the substrate. In agreement with the autoradiography results, an analysis of the cation specificity transport in BBMV showed that leucine uptake had a low cation specificity, whereas lysine and proline uptakes were Na+-dependent. An excess of lysine and proline, which share with alanine two different transport systems in the gill epithelium of marine bivalves, reduced eucine uptake. The possible role of the absorptive ability of the integument in a carnivorous mollusc is discussed.  相似文献

Temnocorpichnus isaacleai is a new ichnogenus and ichnospecies of temnospondyl amphibian body impression from the Mississippian (Visean) Mauch Chunk Formation of eastern Pennsylvania, United States. The shovel-shaped head, robust limbs, relatively short trunk and smooth integument diagnose the ichnotaxon and readily distinguish it from Hermundurichnus and Sauropleura, the only other named body impressions of Paleozoic tetrapods. Temnocorpichnus is a compound ichnogenus in which the footprint ichnogenus Batrachichnus is a behaviorally distinct component. The temnospondyl identity of Temnocorpichnus adds to the sparse and earliest records of temnspondyls, which are of Visean age. The smooth integument of the ichnogenus does not support the presence of ventral scales or armor in the earliest temnospondyls, but body proportions of the Mauch Chunk body impressions indicate a relatively terrestrial temnospondyl not matched by any taxon now known from bones. Three closely associated impressions of Temnocorpichnus on a single bedding plane suggest some sort of gregarious behavior in Mississippian temnospondyls and may support speculation that internal fertilization and associated courtship behavior evolved independently in one group of amphibians more than 300 million years ago.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of wax esters has been investigated in maturing seeds of Sinapis alba. Exogenous long-chain alcohols are incorporated exclusively into alkyl moieties of wax esters. Oxidation of the long-chain alcohols is not detected. Exogenous fatty acids are incorporated into acyl moieties of wax esters to a low extent. A reduction of fatty acids to alcohols is not observed. Synthesis of wax esters is localized exclusively in the testa; both outer and inner integument are equally active in wax ester biosynthesis. The biosynthesis of wax esters is specific with regard to both chain length and degree of unsaturation of long-chain alcohols. Exogenous and endogenous sterols are not esterified.  相似文献

Glycosaminoglycans from the ventral and dorsal integuments of the anuran Bufo ictericus were characterized based on biochemical and histochemical methods. Dermatan sulfate is the major metachromatic glycosaminoglycan found in these tissues, but small amount of heparan sulfate was also detected. The average molecular mass of the dermatan sulfate is approximately 20 kDa, similar to the glycosaminoglycan isolated from mammalian skin. In addition, the amphibian integument contains high amounts of hyaluronic acid, especially in the ventral area. We also observed that the glycosaminoglycans occur in the anuran integument as irregular deposits through the spongious dermis and in the mast cells, as revealed by histochemical analysis using Alcian blue, dimethylmethylene blue and toluidine blue stains. The concentration and composition of glycosaminoglycans found in the amphibian integument resemble those from mammalian skin except for the higher concentration of hyaluronic acid in the amphibian tissue. Possibly, this observation indicates that the function of the sulfated glycosaminoglycan in these tissues has been preserved during evolution, although the amphibian integument and the human skin have their own particular physiology.  相似文献

The relationship between induction of in vitro apolysis and the duration of hormone treatment, and the effects of metabolic inhibitors on the ecdysone-induced apolysis were investigated in the cultured integument taken from the rice stem borer larva, Chilo suppressalis. When fragments of integument were subjected to 0.3 μg/ml β-ecdysone for more than 5 hr and then transferred to hormone free medium, they were induced to apolyse one day after treatment. If the fragments of integument were treated with hormone for 1 to 4 hr at first and then treated with hormone for 2 to 5 hr again after a 5 day interval in hormone free medium, almost all the fragments were induced to apolyse one day after treatment. This result suggests that the action of β-ecdysone on the cultured integument is accumulative. If the fragments of integument were cultured in the medium containing actinomycin-D and then transferred to medium containing β-ecdysone, a strong inhibitory effect on the apolysis of the integument was observed. Similarly, an inhibitory effect appeared when fragments of integument were treated first with hormone and then with puromycin. These results show that the m-RNA synthesis necessary for apolysis was completed within 6 hr after hormone treatment. However, the protein synthesis required for apolysis was not. The relationship of the results obtained from these in vitro experiments to the mode of action of ecdysone is discussed.  相似文献

The development of the outer integument and funicular outgrowth in the ovule of Magnolia grandiflora was examined by microtomy and scanning electron microscopy to reveal the morphology and evolution of the outer integument, a novel angiosperm structure. Early in development the outer integument is semiannular, decurrent to the lateral sides of the funiculus, and extends downwards beyond the funicular outgrowth that forms in the gap of the outer integument, and is transverse to the funiculus. The outer integument then overgrows the funicular outgrowth perpendicularly to the funiculus to form a micropyle together. The hood-shaped outer integument and the funicular outgrowth compose an envelope complex, and the interpretation of a single cupular outer integument is not supported. This envelope complex may differ from the cupular outer integument of other angiosperms, e.g., Nymphaeaceae, suggesting independent origin of apparently cupular outer integuments and hood-shaped outer integuments. Anatropous curving is due mainly to differential growth of the chalaza. The bistomic micropyle of Magnoliaceae seems to represent a derived character state, compared to an endostomic micropyle. T. The histological structure of the epidermis, nervous system, and musculature of the vestimentiferan worm Oasisia alvinae is examined. The differentiation of the integument of different regions of the body and the histological structure of the pyriform glands and papillae with cuticular plaques are described. All the main elements of the nervous system lie in the thickness of the epidermis. The brain structure is examined and an attempt is made to homologize parts of the vestimentiferan brain with the polychaete brain. Part of the vestimentiferan brain above the intrabrain channel corresponds to the supraesophageal ganglion of polychaetes, while part of the vestimentiferan brain under the channel corresponds to the subesophageal ganglion. Two commissures are located in the brain region that corresponds to the supraesophageal ganglion. These commissures could be related to the ventral and dorsal roots of the circumesophageal connectives of sedentary polychaetes. Bundles of fiber occur, which presumably correspond to the circumesophageal connectives and the transverse commissure inside the subesophageal ganglion. The musculature differentiation in the trunk region is a characteristic feature of O. alvinae, i.e., feather-like muscles that occur only in the anterior part of the trunk.  相似文献
