A cytologic grading method for fine needle aspiration smears was applied to 178 histologically confirmed breast carcinomas. Grade I defined a well-differentiated carcinoma, grade II a carcinoma with pleomorphic tumor cells and grade II an anaplastic carcinoma. The cell-to-cell relationship (topography) and the cytologic criteria contributed to the grading. Special attention was paid to grade III tumors, which have an unfavorable prognosis. The correlation of grading with the clinical course of the disease was evaluated after a 12-month followup. In 4% of the patients classified as having grade I disease, 8.9% as having grade II and 66% as having grade III, local recurrence of disease, metastasis or death was observed within one year. The contribution of cytologic grading to the prognosis of breast cancers is discussed. 相似文献

Recent studies suggest the existence of primate-like cognitive abilities in corvids. Although the learning abilities of corvids in comparison to other species have been investigated before, little is known on how corvids perform on simple discrimination tasks if tested in experimental settings comparable to those that have been used for studying complex cognitive abilities. In this study, we tested a captive group of 12 ravens (Corvus corax) on four discrimination problems and their reversals. In contrast to other studies investigating learning abilities, our ravens were not food deprived and participation in experiments was voluntary. This preliminary study showed that all ravens successfully solved feature and position discriminations and several of the ravens could solve new tasks in a few trials, making very few mistakes. 相似文献

We are developing a novel, portable dual-panel positron emission tomography (PET) camera dedicated to breast cancer imaging. With a sensitive area of ∼ 150 cm2, this camera is based on arrays of lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) crystals (1×1×3 mm3) coupled to 11×11-mm2 position-sensitive avalanche photodiodes (PSAPD). GATE open source software was used to perform Monte Carlo simulations to optimize the parameters for the camera design. The noise equivalent counting (NEC) rate, together with the true, scatter, and random counting rates were simulated at different time and energy windows. Focal plane tomography (FPT) was used for visualizing the tumors at different depths between the two detector panels. Attenuation and uniformity corrections were applied to images. 相似文献

Background
In medical practice, diagnostic hypotheses are often made by physicians in the first moments of contact with patients; sometimes even before they report their symptoms. We propose that generation of diagnostic hypotheses in this context is the result of cognitive processes subserved by brain mechanisms that are similar to those involved in naming objects or concepts in everyday life.Methodology and Principal Findings
To test this proposal we developed an experimental paradigm with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using radiological diagnosis as a model. Twenty-five radiologists diagnosed lesions in chest X-ray images and named non-medical targets (animals) embedded in chest X-ray images while being scanned in a fMRI session. Images were presented for 1.5 seconds; response times (RTs) and the ensuing cortical activations were assessed. The mean response time for diagnosing lesions was 1.33 (SD ±0.14) seconds and 1.23 (SD ±0.13) seconds for naming animals. 72% of the radiologists reported cogitating differential diagnoses during trials (3.5 seconds). The overall pattern of cortical activations was remarkably similar for both types of targets. However, within the neural systems shared by both stimuli, activation was significantly greater in left inferior frontal sulcus and posterior cingulate cortex for lesions relative to animals.Conclusions
Generation of diagnostic hypotheses and differential diagnoses made through the immediate visual recognition of clinical signs can be a fast and automatic process. The co-localization of significant brain activation for lesions and animals suggests that generating diagnostic hypotheses for lesions and naming animals are served by the same neuronal systems. Nevertheless, diagnosing lesions was cognitively more demanding and associated with more activation in higher order cortical areas. These results support the hypothesis that medical diagnoses based on prompt visual recognition of clinical signs and naming in everyday life are supported by similar brain systems. 相似文献7.

Two experiments were designed to explore the possible role of mouse saliva in modulating social interactions. Experiment 1 examined the investigatory sniffing behavior of an intact male toward either another intact male or castrated male. It was found that castrates received more mouth, ears-eyes, and hind sniffing than intacts. In addition, the temporal patterning of mouth and ears-eyes sniffing was found to be different for the two stimulus conditions. The findings of Experiment 2 indicated that saliva from testosterone-treated castrates contained aggression-promoting cues relative to saliva from castrated control animals. Possible sources of the salivary chemosignal were discussed. 相似文献

Sera from 287 sheep were screened for cytotoxic antibodies against sheep lymphocytes. Forty four antisera were selected which provisionally define 13 lymphocyte antigens. The frequency of these antigens was studied in 305 sheep from 8 flocks of different breeds. Family studies confirm that inheritance of sheep lymphocyte antigens is controlled by the autosomal codominant genes of at least 2 linked loci. 相似文献

One approach to super-resolution fluorescence imaging uses sequential activation and localization of individual fluorophores to achieve high spatial resolution. Essential to this technique is the choice of fluorescent probes; the properties of the probes, including photons per switching event, on-off duty cycle, photostability and number of switching cycles, largely dictate the quality of super-resolution images. Although many probes have been reported, a systematic characterization of the properties of these probes and their impact on super-resolution image quality has been described in only a few cases. Here we quantitatively characterized the switching properties of 26 organic dyes and directly related these properties to the quality of super-resolution images. This analysis provides guidelines for characterization of super-resolution probes and a resource for selecting probes based on performance. Our evaluation identified several photoswitchable dyes with good to excellent performance in four independent spectral ranges, with which we demonstrated low-cross-talk, four-color super-resolution imaging. 相似文献

Radiation-shielding of healthy tissue is mandatory in breast intraoperative electron radiotherapy (IOERT). In this regard, dedicated radioprotection disks have been introduced. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the performance of three radioprotection disks widely used for breast IOERT. A Monte Carlo simulation approach was used for this purpose. The considered disks included Al + Pb, PMMA + Copper, and PTFE + Steel. They were stimulated by means of the MCNPX Monte Carlo code at depths around R100 and R90 of different electron energies in a water phantom, and their impact on the dosimetric properties of the therapeutic beam was evaluated in both correct and upside down disk placements. The electron energy spectrum immediately above and below each disk was calculated and analyzed. Furthermore, performance characteristics of the studied disks such as backscatter factors (BSFs) and transmission factors (TFs) at different electron energies were determined and compared. The results show that the Al + Pb disk most effectively attenuates the beam, while at the same time exhibits maximum BSF values. Employing the PMMA + Copper disk can minimize the BSF value but at the expense of an increased TF. The Al + Pb disk showed the best performance from the radiation protection viewpoint, while its highest BSF values could lead to perturbation of dose homogeneity within the target volume. PTFE + Steel disk showed an intermediate performance regarding the electron backscattering and transmission among the studied disks. The reverse placement of each disk can substantially increase the BSF value as compared to the correct situation but had less impact on the TF value. 相似文献

The availability of a simple-to-use, automatic measurement system for noninvasive flow estimation is imperative, given the clinical demand for an acceptable noninvasive procedure rather than the standard invasive procedure of thermodilution. A method for calculating cardiac output from noninvasively derived pressure pulses has been developed, and the results of a preliminary evaluation study on post-cardiac surgery patients for whom invasive flow measures were readily available for comparison are provided in this report. The proposed method relies on fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of pulses measured externally at the carotid and femoral pressure points. A transfer function of the aorta is computed from digitally filtered pulse measurements, and a tapered model of the aorta is parametrically adapted using a simplex optimization algorithm so that its transfer function matches that derived experimentally. An aortic input impedance term is obtained from the optimized model and utilized along with the carotid pulse (analogous to input voltage) to compute aortic flow. In addition to its automation, attractive features of this method include the requirement for relatively few pulses for analysis as well as considerable resistance to noise artifact. For 59 data records collected from 54 post-cardiac surgery patients, the average flow measurements computed over several pulses compare well with the standard, invasive method of thermodilution. Preliminary results also indicate a strong potential for tracking changes in cardiac output over time, and invite further use of the method in monitoring hemodynamically unstable patients. Some evolutionary explanations of cross-cultural differences propose that human personality is caused by pathogen stress. Both xenophobia and ethnocentrism evolved under conditions with high parasite prevalence. Further, inter-individual variation in disgust or fear of parasites is expected to be influenced by human health, where healthy people should express lower disgust sensitivity to parasites. We examined inter-individual variation of children’s fear, disgust and self-perceived danger between two distinct cultures differing in overall pathogen prevalence. We found that children were able to distinguish between disease-relevant and disease-irrelevant groups of invertebrates and that children in regions with high pathogen prevalence expressed greater fear, disgust and self-perceived danger of all animals, irrespective of disease threat. After controlling for confounding factors, better health of children was associated with lower perceived danger of disease-relevant animals. Gender differences were found only in conditions with low pathogen stress. Our results support the idea that cross-cultural differences in human perception of animals are mediated by pathogen threat. Further research is necessary to investigate causal relationship between human health and avoidance of potentially hazardous animals. 相似文献

Qualitative evaluation of protein content in formalin fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues is usually performed by means of cytofluorimetric analysis. On the other hand, several studies underline the opportunity to measure the concentration of nuclear proteins, which is often accomplished by using complex techniques and instrumentation. In the present work, we suggest a new application for the spectrophotometric evaluation of protein content on extracted and isolated nuclei, based on EDTA treatment of specimens and chemical extraction of proteins, followed by direct spectrophotometric measurement at UV wavelengths. We also demonstrate how this parameter correlates with other diagnostic factors, such as the proliferation index (MIB-1) and the DNA content (ploidy) of cells. This method is simple and effective, yet less expensive than other protein quantitation protocols. 相似文献

Gorgonians possess a huge array of secondary metabolites for various functions, many of which are not known. One of these functions is antifungal. This study investigates if gorgonians from reefs in Singapore can defend themselves against the settlement and invasion of fungi. Crude extracts from 10 species of gorgonians from three families, Ellisellidae, Subergorgiidae and Plexauridae, were screened against nine species of deuteromycetous fungi previously isolated from gorgonians. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) experiments were carried out in 96-microwell plates using extract concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 24.0 mg/ml. Extracts from Euplexaura cf. pinnata, Echinogorgia sp. C, Junceella cf. gemmacea, Subergorgia suberosa, Ctenocella cf. umbraculum and Junceella sp. A were found to possess inhibitory effects on fungi. MICs range from 1.5 to 18.0 mg/ml. Results showed that most of the antifungal activities were exhibited by Euplexaura cf. pinnata and Echinogorgia sp. C from the family Plexauridae. However, for most gorgonian species, the concentrations required to inhibit fungal growth are much higher than the natural concentrations of extracts found in gorgonian tissues. Only the extracts of Echinogorgia sp. C, C. cf. umbraculum and S. suberosa were found to inhibit fungal growth of a few fungal species at a concentration lower than that of its natural concentration. 相似文献

* Here, a new approach to macromolecular imaging of leaf tissue using a multichannel focal plane array (FPA) infrared detector was compared with the proven method of infrared mapping with a synchrotron source, using transverse sections of leaves from a species of Eucalyptus. * A new histological method was developed, ideally suited to infrared spectroscopic analysis of leaf tissue. Spatial resolution and the signal-to-noise ratio of the FPA imaging and synchrotron mapping methods were compared. * An area of tissue 350 microm(2) required approx. 8 h to map using the synchrotron technique and approx. 2 min to image using the FPA. The two methods produced similar infrared images, which differentiated all tissue types in the leaves according to their macromolecular chemistry. * The synchrotron and FPA methods produced similar results, with the synchrotron method having superior signal-to-noise ratio and potentially better spatial resolution, whereas the FPA method had the advantage in terms of data acquisition time, expense and ease of use. FPA imaging offers a convenient, laboratory-based approach to microscopic chemical imaging of leaves. 相似文献
