The Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP) and Praat are computer programs commonly used for acoustic analysis of voice in clinical and research settings. Both softwares extract a set of acoustic parameters, many of which are defined similarly. The purpose of this study was to compare results obtained by both programs, and examine whether they can clinically distinguish among pathological groups differently. Fifty-eight women participated in the study. Of these women, 28 were diagnosed with functional dysphonia and 30 were diagnosed with benign mass-lesions (10 nodules, ten polyps and 10 cysts). Six productions of the vowels /a/ and /i/, were analyzed using MDVP and Praat. Results show similar mean fundamental-frequency (mF0) values for both programs (P > 0.05). However, values of jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonic ratio (NHR) and degree of unvoiced (DUV) segment were significantly lower using Praat, in comparison with MDVP. Jitter values obtained using MDVP, for the vowel /i/, revealed a significant group difference between the nodule and cyst groups (P < 0.05). This group contrast was not observed using Praat. Results demonstrate that although high correlations are found between values obtained by both programs, individual numerical values vary greatly. Therefore, combining results from both programs are not advisable. In addition, there are indications that linear transformation for the results from one program to the other might lead to erroneous conclusions, and should be carried out with caution.  相似文献

The differential equation of de Wit (1970) which predicts the growth of plant species in mixtures from their yield–density response in monocultures is compared with a simpler equation. This model is also based on the yield–density response of species grown in monocultures, but is static and predicts only the net result of plant competition during discrete time periods. Data from successive harvests in yield–density experiments in monocultures of one grass and two legume species were fitted to both models and the relative reproductive rate and the relative replacement rate were calculated from model predictions. Predictions from our model agreed more closely with observations than predictions from the de Wit model. It is concluded that our model deserves further attention in the studies of population dynamics in mixtures when the final outcome of competition is the main interest.  相似文献

A variety of mechanisms have been proposed to account for the extension of life span in seeds (seed longevity). In this work, we used Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seeds as a model and carried out differential proteomics to investigate this trait, which is of both ecological and agricultural importance. In our system based on a controlled deterioration treatment (CDT), we compared seed samples treated for different periods of time up to 7 d. Germination tests showed a progressive decrease of germination vigor depending on the duration of CDT. Proteomic analyses revealed that this loss in seed vigor can be accounted for by protein changes in the dry seeds and by an inability of the low-vigor seeds to display a normal proteome during germination. Furthermore, CDT strongly increased the extent of protein oxidation (carbonylation), which might induce a loss of functional properties of seed proteins and enzymes and/or enhance their susceptibility toward proteolysis. These results revealed essential mechanisms for seed vigor, such as translational capacity, mobilization of seed storage reserves, and detoxification efficiency. Finally, this work shows that similar molecular events accompany artificial and natural seed aging.  相似文献

The microbiological quality of indoor air is creating an increasing interest especially as far as places at risk such as hospitals, clinics, medical and odontological surgeries are concerned. Working with the odontologists of our province we have been carrying out a research aimed at preventing cross-infection in odontology. Data obtained from the microbiological analysis of the air in 36 surgeries using S.A.S were discussed during the V National Congress of Aerobiology. During that congress the need of setting a standardized technique of air sampling in indoor environments emerged and two routes have been identified: (1) the gravimetric technique on open plate exposed for an hour close to the dental unit and (2) the use of the volumetric sampler which gives qualitative data expressed as colonies forming units per cubic metre of air. However, both of these techniques present some problems: using the first a loss of micro-organisms has been noticed due to the variability of the air fluxes and the different weight of the biological particles; using the second one the bacterial charge is also undervalued, because of the stress suffered by the bacteria with the use of the volumetric sampler. In the light of these statements we decided to use both in dental surgeries to be able to compare the results obtained. Our project is expected to carry out at least one inspection and the relative sampling (indoor air, water of the dental unit, air of the syringe, disinfectant solution, surface tampons, biological test of sterility) in each dental surgery in the territory of our health Unit, located in Ferrara, Northern Italy.  相似文献

The polarizability of a molecule, an important physical property, is currently attracting our attention particularly in the area of QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationships) for chemical-biological interactions. Our primary focus in the present study has been upon the computational aspects by using NVE (sum of the valence electrons) as a means for estimating polarizability, we have been surprised at its utility. In this report we demonstrate how NVE can be related to the calculated polarizability from a variety of efforts to better understand the subject. A comparison between the use of two polarizability parameters, that is, NVE and CMR (calculated molar refractivity) in the formulation of QSAR for chemical-biological interactions has been also discussed.  相似文献

Arsenic distribution and mobility in marine sediments was investigated by means of total extraction and two sequential extraction procedures i.e. a modified sequential extraction procedure proposed by the European Standard, Measurementand Testing (SM&T) program, formerly the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) procedure and a five steps sequential extraction based on the Wenzel extraction procedure, called modified Wenzel extraction. Sediments were collected from Cagliari’s harbour and Cagliari’s gulf, in Western Mediterranean Sea, Italy. The modified Wenzel extraction provided a more detailed As binding pattern and turned out to be much more appropriate than the modified SM&T procedure for gaining information regarding the mobilization of As within marine sediments. In the harbour, the largest part of As is contained in the residual fraction. At the contrary, As concentration, which is higher in the Cagliari’s gulf, is primarily associated with amorphous and crystalline hydrous Fe(Mn, Al) oxide. Moreover, this study suggests the possibility to segregate different types of marine sediments depending of human or industrial activities and to trace As contaminated marine sediments to determine the origin of contamination following the percentile of As contained in each extraction steps.  相似文献

生物的雌雄同体及性变现象,历来受科研人员关注,在脊椎动物中已有不少研究,在双壳类中虽然也有报道,但研究尚不深入。有关双壳类群体的性别构成,一般认为多为雌雄异体,如马氏珠母贝、栉江珧、企鹅珍珠贝、巴非蛤等;少数物种为雌雄同体,如海湾扇贝、光滑蓝蛤及某些牡蛎。但在雌雄异体种类的群体中,常常发现雌雄同体的个体以及在一定条件出现的性别转化现象。  相似文献

To our knowledge jumping kinematics have never been studied in elderly persons. This study was aimed at examining the influence of aging on vertical jump performance and on interjoint coordination. Two groups of adults, 11 young men ages 18-25 years and 11 older men ages 79-100 years, were filmed while performing a maximal squat jump. Compared to young adults, jump height was significantly decreased by 28 cm in the elderly. Older adults spontaneously jumped from a more extended position of the hip. Results showed a decrease in hip, knee, and ankle linear velocity and angular amplitude with aging. The decrease in jump height was attributed to a decrease in explosive force and in the range of shortening of extensor muscles. In agreement with the literature, a proximo-distal coordination pattern was observed in young adults. Older adults used a simultaneous pattern. This may indicate that adults adjust their pattern of joint coordination as they age.  相似文献

A European strain of Aphidius ervishall be introduced into Japan for the control of Macrosiphum euphorbiaeon greenhouse tomatoes. We compared this strain, which is originating from The Netherlands (EVP), with a native strain from Hokkaido, Northern Japan (SPR) in several characteristics. The percentage of parasitism of SPR and EVP was significantly different, when attacking three aphid species: 13% and 30% on M. euphorbiaeon tomato, 68% and 93% on Acyrthosiphon pisumon broad bean and 10% and 42% on Aulacorthum solanion sweet pepper, respectively. SPR and EVP differed morphologically (in the colouration of the petiole) and in the esterase banding patterns. Furthermore, cross mating experiments showed that SPR and EVP are partially reproductively isolated from each other. Complete reproductive isolation is evident in the one direction cross (EVP females and SPR males).  相似文献

Pseudochondrostoma duriense and Achondrostoma oligolepis are two Iberian endemic cyprinid fish species that occur in sympatry over most of their distribution range and that are suspected to hybridize in nature. Here, we employed a combination of mitochondrial and microsatellite markers to explore the extent of introgressive hybridization between these fishes. Two natural hybrid zones were identified in different river basins. Introgression was bi‐directional and both hybrid zones consisted mostly of parental genotypes/phenotypes (i.e. bimodal hybrid zones). Yet, they appeared to differ in the extent and direction of introgression, which supports the view that they constitute independent outcomes of different hybridization processes probably influenced by environmental features. Several discordances were found between mtDNA and microsatellite results, suggesting that this hybridization process has complex consequences and illustrating the importance of using independent markers to define accurately the hybrid status of individuals in the presence of high levels of backcrossing.  相似文献

During recent years a gradual decrease inallergenic airborne pollen concentration hasbeen observed in the monitoring station ofPadua (Italy). Because technical checks of thesampler were not able to explain this trend,the results obtained from two twinpollen-samplers (Lanzoni VPPS 2000), placed twometres apart, were compared.An eight-week sampling was carried out duringthe year 2000 from July to September.Subsequent analysis revealed no statisticallysignificant difference between the dataobtained with the two instruments. On the otherhand, both samplers captured high levels offungal spores. We conclude that the observednegative trend in pollen count is real and notrelated to technical biases.  相似文献

Radioiodine therapy is an effective and safe treatment of hyperthyroidism due to Graves’ disease, toxic adenoma, toxic multinodular goiter. We compared the outcomes of a traditional calculation method based on an analytical fit of the uptake curve and subsequent dose calculation with the MIRD approach, and an alternative computation approach based on a formulation implemented in a public-access website, searching for the best timing of radioiodine uptake measurements in pre-therapeutic dosimetry. We report about sixty-nine hyperthyroid patients that were treated after performing a pre-therapeutic dosimetry calculated by fitting a six-point uptake curve (3–168 h). In order to evaluate the results of the radioiodine treatment, patients were followed up to sixty-four months after treatment (mean 47.4 ± 16.9). Patient dosimetry was then retrospectively recalculated with the two above-mentioned methods. Several time schedules for uptake measurements were considered, with different timings and total number of points. Early time schedules, sampling uptake up to 48 h, do not allow to set-up an accurate treatment plan, while schedules including the measurement at one week give significantly better results. The analytical fit procedure applied to the three-point time schedule 3(6)–24–168 h gave results significantly more accurate than the website approach exploiting either the same schedule, or the single measurement at 168 h. Consequently, the best strategy among the ones considered is to sample the uptake at 3(6)–24–168 h, and carry out an analytical fit of the curve, while extra measurements at 48 and 72 h lead only marginal improvements in the accuracy of therapeutic activity determination.  相似文献

A quantitative biochronological study by Cody et al. (2008) integrates comprehensive diatom biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, and tephrostratigraphy from 32 Neogene sections around the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continental margin. A recent method, known as Constrained Optimization (CONOP), which can be viewed as a multidimensional version of graphic correlation, is applied to that very interesting database.The goal of the present paper is to discuss some theoretical aspects of quantitative biochronology and to compare the constrained optimization with the deterministic method called Unitary Associations (UAM), a graph theoretical model. We illustrate the fact that the UAM is an extremely powerful and unique theory allowing an in-depth analysis of the internal conflicting inter-taxon stratigraphic relationships, inherent to any complex biostratigraphical database.  相似文献

Lessonia trabeculata is the most important brown seaweed in northern Chilean subtidal environments. It usually grows in areas with high to moderately high water movement, and only occasionally in sheltered habitats. These different hydrodynamic environments produce morphologically and physiologically distinct plants. The purpose of this study was to determine probable differences in reproductive features between two L. trabeculata populations exposed to different water movement intensities. The zoospore production, settlement, germination, gametophyte fertility and survival were studied.Zoospore release and spore attachment capacity were higher from blades from El Francés Beach, the locality with higher water movement energy. Germination at 24 hours was higher in the germlings from El Francés Beach than those from La Herradura Bay. However, after 4 days of culture germination rates were similar. Average survival rates of gametophytes were similar for both populations. After 20 days culturing gametophytes from El Francés Beach fertilization was observed, while in samples from La Herradura Bay the sporophytes were seen at 27d.The results suggest a higher reproductive vitality in plants of Lessonia trabeculata living in an environment with an active water movement, than plants growing in a sheltered environment.  相似文献

In habitats with more predators, a species is expected to breed in safer sites and be less successful than in predator-impoverished habitats. We tested this hypothesis by studying nest-habitat selection and nest predation in two populations of Trumpeter finch (Bucanetes githagineus). One breeds in a predator-rich habitat (Tabernas, Iberian Peninsula), and the other is found on an island with fewer predators (La Oliva, Canary Islands). In both localities, we studied the features of nests in two different substrates, on the ground and in cliffs, including visibility and position in the cliff. We measured the habitat characteristics in a series of plots around the ground nests and compared them to random points. We also studied the influence of nest features and habitat selection on predation of both nest types. Trumpeter finches built more nests in cliffs in Tabernas, probably because there are more cliffs available there. In this locality, the patches selected for ground nesting had below-average vegetation cover, lower vegetation height, and were on steeper slopes. In La Oliva, they selected above-average vegetation height and steeper slopes. Cliff nests were less predated than ground nests in La Oliva, but not in Tabernas. The only variable that affected survival rates in Tabernas was the height of vegetation around ground nests, with nests in lower vegetation having higher survival rates. These results suggest that locality-related differences in habitat selection by vegetation height could be related to the different predator assemblages present in any given area, though we cannot rule out confounding influences of other differences between the two sites.  相似文献

Several studies on aneuploidy and aging have shown a significant increase in the loss of chromosomes in both males and females with age. Others have observed a significant increase in micronucleus formation in lymphocytes with age. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the relationship between sex chromosome loss and increased micronucleus frequencies with age, to establish sex chromosome loss frequencies unbiased by cellular survival factors or slide preparation, and to determine the effect of smoking on sex chromosome loss. Blood samples were obtained from 8 newborn females and 38 adult females ranging in age from 19 to 77. Isolated lymphocytes were cultured according to standard techniques and blocked with cytochalasin B. Two thousand binucleated cells per donor were scored using a modified micronucleus assay to determine the kinetochore status of each micronucleus. Slides were then hybridized with a 2.0 kb centromeric X chromosome-specific probe labeled with biotinylated dUTP, and detected with fluorescein-conjugated avidin. All micronucleated cells were relocated and their X chromosome status was determined. We found the X chromosome to be present in 72.2% of the micronuclei scored; additionally our results show a significant increase with age in the number of micronuclei containing an X chromosome.  相似文献
