Data on habitats, food plants of larvae and adults, feeding, mating, oviposition, larval and pupal development, natural enemies, and distribution of seven weevil species (Lixus canescens F.-W., L. iridis Ol., L. myagri Ol., L. punctirostris Boh., L. subtilis Boh., L. incanescens Boh., and L. brevipes Bris.) are given. New host plants of L. canescens and L. iridis are revealed. Gall induction by L. brevipes is reported for the first time. Distribution of all the species in Ukraine and Russia (the latter based on the literature) are given in more detail. The following actions performed by females of several Larinus Dej. species during egg laying are described: search of an appropriate place on the plant, making the hole for the egg, oviposition proper, and sealing the hole. The hole preparation takes the longest time and the greatest effort. Only one individual usually completes development in one flower head. Females of Larinus vulpes Ol. prefer larger flower heads for oviposition and occasionally lay eggs into stems. The ability of females to distinguish the flower heads with already laid eggs is discussed. Species of Larinus may be divided into two groups with “early” and “late” oviposition. In invaded environments, formerly reliable cues might no longer be associated with adaptive outcomes and organisms can become trapped by their evolved responses. The invasion of Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard) into the native habitat of Pieris virginiensis (West Virginia White) is one such example. Female butterflies oviposit on the invasive plant because it is related to their preferred native host plant Cardamine diphylla (toothwort), but larvae are unable to complete development. We have studied the impact of the A. petiolata invasion on P. virginiensis butterflies in the Southeastern USA by comparing oviposition preference and larval survival on both plants in North Carolina (NC) populations without A. petiolata and West Virginia (WV) populations where A. petiolata is present. Larval survival to the 3rd instar was equally low in both populations when raised on A. petiolata. Mean oviposition preference on the two plants also did not differ between populations. However, we found a seasonal effect on preference between early and late season flights within WV populations. Late season females laid 99% of total eggs on A. petiolata while early season females utilized both host plants. Late season females were also less likely to lay eggs than early season females. This change in preference toward A. petiolata could be driven by the early senescence of C. diphylla and suggests a seasonal component to the impact of A. petiolata. Therefore, the already short flight season of P. virginiensis could become further constrained in invaded populations.  相似文献

We investigated feeding and oviposition behavior of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, when exposed to the foraging trails of the convergens ladybird beetle, Hippodamia convergens. Diaphorina citri females feeding on citrus leaves directly exposed to the ladybird adults or treated with trail extract excreted significantly less honeydew droplets than controls. The trail chemicals of the ladybird beetle also decreased oviposition by D. citri females on citrus. In a no-choice experiment, D. citri females preferred to oviposit on control flush and plants than those with ladybird trail-extract treatments. In two-choice experiments, 68.0% of D. citri released into cages exhibited strong selection preference for settling and eventual oviposition on control plants than plants treated with ladybird trail extract. Diaphorina citri eggs were found on all new leaf flush of control plants, whereas only 29.5% of flush on treatment plants were selected for oviposition. The trail chemical deposited by the convergens ladybird beetle elicits repellency of D. citri feeding and oviposition. Therefore, the trail chemicals my contain components that could be useful for behavior-based management of D. citri and HLB disease by reducing psyllid feeding and oviposition.  相似文献

The abundance of different life stages of Orius insidiosus (Say) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) and its prey were recorded in vegetationally diverse (soybean and agronomic weeds) and monoculture (soybean only) fields. Orius insidiosus adults and nymphs were more abundant in diversified plots than in monocultures. A similar number of O. insidiosus eggs were found in the two treatments, but twice as many eggs were laid on non-crop plants than on soybeans within the vegetationally diverse plots. Prey densities were equivalent in the two treatments. In olfactometer assays, naïve O. insidiosus females were unresponsive to odors from three weed species (morning glory, redroot pigweed and velvetleaf). The current results, coupled with previous experimental observations, lead us to believe that higher abundance of O. insidiosus in vegetationally diverse habitats could be related to improved fitness of the predator, which in turn is related to certain plant qualities (e.g., nutrition, plant architecture, etc.). Proximal cues are likely more influential to oviposition decisions by O. insidiosus females than volatile signals.  相似文献

As an initial contribution to understanding the adaptive value of behavioral and life-history strategies, the life cycle and mating behavior of an unstudied species of tephritid fruit fly in the genus Rhagoletis are characterized for the first time. Over a 9-month fruiting period, a small proportion of Solanum appendiculatum Dunal (< 10 %) was found to be infested with a single larva of Rhagoletis solanophaga (Hernández & Frías). The average duration of R. solanophaga lifecycle (c.a. 140 days from egg laying to death of adults) exceeded the three month fruitless period. Additionally, R. solanophaga is capable of exploiting Solanaceous plants in at least two genera. These features could have selected for a non-diapausing species of Rhagoletis, a genus where most species are univoltine. Nevertheless, some individuals in the population became dormant. As other members of the genus, R. solanophaga exhibited a resource defense mating system with forced copulations and multiple mating. Both males and females could be highly promiscuous and individual mating success exhibited a wide range of outcomes. Regardless of mating success, mated females stored similar amounts of sperm in two spherical spermathecae. Long copulations were observed, perhaps functioning as a form of mate guarding with probable disadvantages for females. We outline hypotheses and opportunities for future comparative studies examining sperm competition and mate guarding.  相似文献

The predator Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) and the generalist entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum Petch (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) are effective biological control agents that can co-occur in pest management programmes. We exposed larvae to M. brunneum, on leaves and in soil, to explore possible outcomes of combining the two natural enemies. The number of emerging adults and their longevity were negatively affected by fungus in the soil. When exposed on leaves, adult emergence was unaffected but longevity was reduced. In choice experiments, females chose to lay eggs on fungus-free leaves: more control leaves had eggs and there were more eggs per leaf in the control. In no-choice experiments, the same frequency of females laid eggs in the treatment and control, but significantly more eggs were laid on the control leaves. Gravid A. aphidimyza can perceive M. brunneum and respond by choosing fungus-free oviposition sites, thus reducing contact between them.  相似文献

Effects of inducing plants by exposing them to insect herbivory, mechanical damage or damaged neighboring plants were evaluated on the oviposition preferences of Plutella xylostella. The role of plant genotypes differing in their glucosinolate hydrolysis profiles was also evaluated using a wild ecotype (Col-0) and a genetically modified line (tgg1tgg2) of Arabidopsis thaliana. While the Col-0 line has normal production of glucosinolate hydrolysis products, the double myrosinase knockout (tgg1tgg2) is defective in the production of these volatiles. Dual choice oviposition assays were performed using naïve P. xylostella females, and the two A. thaliana lines, which were exposed to the three types of induction treatments. Female oviposition preferences were significantly influenced by both the type of plant induction and the plant genotypes differing in their volatile profiles. Plutella xylostella females significantly preferred to oviposit on herbivore-damaged plants (versus undamaged controls) when Col-0 plants were used, but chose control plants over the double myrosinase knockout tgg1tgg2. However, plant genotype did not influence oviposition choices between plant-plant primed or mechanically damaged plants and paired undamaged controls. Given the prevalent use of genetically modified plants and the potential differences in their responses to different types of induction, these factors may be important to consider in the management of specialist pests such as the diamondback moth P. xylostella.  相似文献

Female oviposition decisions in insects may strongly affect offspring growth and survival, and thus determine population performance. In this study, we examined oviposition site selection in the xerophilous ecotype of the endangered myrmecophilous butterfly Phengaris (=Maculinea) alcon (Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae) in Estonia, at the northern distribution margin of both the butterfly and its host plant, Gentiana cruciata L. Egg distribution on individual host plants appeared to be highly uneven: plants carrying high egg loads contrasted to a high proportion of host plants without any or with a few eggs. Host plant use for oviposition was strongly dependent on plant characteristics and environmental context. Host plant height relative to the surrounding vegetation rather than the absolute height of host plants was a key factor determining the use of particular host plant individuals for oviposition. In particular, plants protruding above surrounding vegetation had a higher probability of being used for oviposition, and carried more eggs. Additionally, the number of eggs laid on individual host plants was positively associated with the presence of flowers and the number of shoots. More aggregated host plants received fewer eggs than those with less conspecifics around. Feeding damage by wild herbivores, found in a substantial proportion of the butterfly’s host plants, strongly reduced the number of eggs on individual plants. Our results underline the need to assure that butterfly’s host plants do not become overgrown by surrounding vegetation. Best practices for opening vegetation around host plants may need further studies that explicitly account for butterfly’s host ants—their abundance in relation to vegetation height and their response to opening vegetation.  相似文献

Ant-related oviposition in facultatively myrmecophilous lycaenid butterflies is common, but not universal. In fact, our knowledge of ant-related oviposition in lycaenids is based on some common species (e.g., Rekoa marius, Allosmaitia strophius, Parrhasius polibetes), which limits generalizations about these systems. In this study, we experimentally investigated whether the oviposition pattern of the florivorous lycaenid Leptotes cassius was influenced by the presence of Camponotus ants and whether larvae were attended, rather than attacked, by ants. This might be evidence of myrmecophily. Both L. cassius and Camponotus ants occur on Bionia coriacea, an extrafloral nectaried legume shrub that grows in the Brazilian cerrado. Plants were randomly assigned to ant-present and ant-excluded treatments and were observed twice throughout the short reproductive season. Larvae of L. cassius were tended by ants, whose attendance was characterized by active antennation on the last body segments of the caterpillars. Therefore, Camponotus can be considered a partner of L. cassius. Lycaenid abundance was on average 1.9- and 1.21-fold higher in plants with ants in each sampling period, respectively, indicating a tendency of L. cassius to occur in plants with ants. Nonetheless, results were not statistically significant, suggesting that in this case ants are not a major cue for lycaenid oviposition. In many ant–lycaenid mutualisms, butterfly immatures benefit from reduced parasitism rates. However, no L. cassius immature, regardless of ant presence or absence, was parasitized. Furthermore, larvae may occur inside flower buds that may provide protection from natural enemies; thus, ants may not be required for immature protection.  相似文献

Animals often select oviposition sites to minimize the predation risk for eggs and juveniles, which are more vulnerable to predation than adults. When females produce eggs in clusters, the eggs and juveniles are likely to suffer from cannibalism. Although cannibalism among siblings is known to be lower than among non-siblings, there have been few investigations into the possibility that females select oviposition sites that reduce the risk of cannibalism for the offspring. To test this possibility, we examined oviposition preference by adult females of the predatory mite Gynaeseius liturivorus in response to the presence of her own eggs and to eggs of other females, offering plastic discs as oviposition substrates. Although females did not clearly show a preference for plastic discs on which they had oviposited, they avoided plastic discs on which other females had oviposited. When eggs of other females were artificially placed on clean plastic discs, adult female mites avoided these discs, suggesting that the eggs were used as cues for oviposition preference. Cannibalism among juvenile siblings was lower than among non-siblings. These observations show that adult females and juveniles of G. liturivorus discriminate kin relationships among conspecific individuals. Therefore, oviposition preference by adult female G. liturivorus may lead to the reduced risk of cannibalism among offspring.  相似文献

Shrubby field margins and hedgerows play an important role for many species of flora and fauna in agro-ecosystems, including those which are rare or endangered. A characteristic species of these semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscape is the Eastern eggar, Eriogaster catax (Linnaeus, 1758): a moth species threatened in many European countries. In this study we investigated the oviposition preferences of E. catax at host plant level in agricultural landscape in south-western Poland, near of the northern limit of the species distribution in Europe. In total we surveyed 796 host plants. Altogether we found 439 eggs batches or caterpillar webs of E. catax on 373 occupied plants. Most of them (92.3%) were on blackthorn Prunus spinosa, which was preferred host plant next to pear Pyrus spp. However, the most important predictor of the presence of egg batches were microclimatic conditions. We recorded that females preferred host plants exposed to direct sunlight and with south and west-facing slopes for oviposition and avoided those inside of the dense shrub canopy. Eggs were laid more often on the trunk and on the upper half of the host plant, however there was a significant difference in vertical and horizontal position of egg batches in relation to the position of the plant. Inside of the shrub canopy, eggs were laid in higher parts of host plant and closer to the trunk, than at the edge and on solitary plants. Based on our observations the management strategies for the habitats of the species are proposed and discussed.  相似文献

Plants produce volatile chemical compounds that can negatively affect the preference (antixenosis) or the performance (antibiosis) of herbivorous insects. It is thought that these volatile compounds are used as cues by herbivorous insects to determine the suitability of the plant for egg deposition and, hence, offspring performance. Here, we investigated whether volatiles produced by tomato plants play a role in modulating the flight and oviposition behavior of mated Tuta absoluta females. We found that the behavioral steps displayed by mated females did not differ when they flew toward resistant or susceptible tomato genotypes, but they reached the susceptible genotypes faster than the resistant ones. Moreover, females landed more often and laid more eggs on the most susceptible genotype, the Santa Clara variety. Because this variety is known to be of high quality for the development of T. absoluta larvae, the female’s decision to land and lay more eggs on this genotype seems to be mainly to maximize offspring performance. However, this is not so straightforward because the proportion of landings and eggs laid by T. absoluta on another susceptible genotype tested in this study was not significantly higher than on the resistant genotypes. Finally, although future studies are still needed, considering the antixenotic and antibiotic traits of the resistant genotypes studied here, they are likely to succeed if used in integrated pest management.  相似文献

Background

Physical objects like vegetation can influence oviposition by mosquitoes on soil or water substrates. Anopheles gambiae s. l. is generally thought to utilize puddles over bare soil as its prime larval habitat and to avoid standing water populated with vegetation. In Kisian, Kenya near Kisumu, water often pools in grassy drainage areas both during and after periods of infrequent rains, when typical puddle habitats become scarce because of drying. This raised the question of whether An. gambiae has the behavioural flexibility to switch ovipositional sites when puddles over bare soil are unavailable.

Methods

To test whether presence and height of grasses influenced oviposition, wild-caught gravid An. gambiae s. l. were offered paired choices between wet, bare soil and wet soil populated with mixed grasses or grasses of differing height. No-choice tests were also conducted by giving females either grassy soil or bare soil.

Results

In choice tests, females laid four times more eggs on bare, wet soil than soil populated with grasses. However in no-choice tests, egg output was not significantly different whether grasses were present or not. Females laid significantly more eggs on soil populated with short grass than with medium, or tall grass.

Conclusion

This work shows An. gambiae s. l. has the capacity to oviposit into grassy aquatic habitats when typical puddles over bare soil are unavailable. This knowledge will need to be considered in the design and implementation of programmes aimed at reducing malaria transmission by suppression of An. gambiae s. l. immatures.

The only known non-avian vertebrate obligate brood parasite is the cuckoo catfish (Synodontis multipunctatus), a Lake Tanganyikan endemic. The cuckoo catfish parasitizes Tanganyikan mouthbrooding cichlids, and under captive conditions, will also parasitize cichlids from other Rift Valley lakes. Here we examine the frequency of parasitism by the cuckoo catfish of Ctenochromis horei from Lake Tanganyika and three species from Lake Malawi and the greater Lake Victorian system in a laboratory setting. C. horei was parasitized significantly less (17%) than the allopatric species Haplochromis latifasciatus, Haplochromis nubilus, and Metriaclima estherae (combined parasitism rate of 28%). The lower rates of parasitism in C. horei may be due to differences in the mating ritual, oviposition (e.g., long periods of pseudo-spawning before actual oviposition), and behavioral adaptations (e.g., increased aggression towards the cuckoo catfish). The number of catfish eggs per parasitized brood was similar between C. horei, H. latifasciatus, H. nubilus, and M. estherae. Our results are comparable to findings from the field for C. horei parasitism frequency and number of cuckoo catfish per brood. We also analyzed the parasitism rate of the albino morph of Metriaclima zebra, a domestic strain. Parasitism rates and number of catfish per brood were the highest in the albino morphotype suggesting that the higher levels of parasitism may be related to lower aggressive behavior, lower visual acuity, or captive influence. Cuckoo catfish and mouthbrooding cichlids provide a model system for testing brood parasitism in a laboratory setting.  相似文献

Soils are often complex habitats inhabited by a wide range of organisms, some harmful to plants and others beneficial, for example by attacking harmful organisms. Beneficial organisms include predatory mites, some of which have been commercialized for biological control of pest insects and mites. The objective of this work was to evaluate under laboratory condition the suitability of representative soil insect and mite pests, especially Aceria tulipae (Keifer), as prey to the soil-inhabiting predatory mites Proctolaelaps bickleyi (Bram) and Cosmolaelaps brevistilis (Karg). Predation, oviposition and survivorship of recently molted adult females of the predators were assessed in the dark in rearing chambers at 25 ± 1 °C and 75 ± 3% RH. Predation rate by P. bickleyi on A. tulipae was significantly higher than that by C. brevistilis (196.3 vs. 71.0 specimens/day). About 482 A. tulipae were preyed by each P. bickleyi at each day, when 500 A. tulipae were made available daily to the predator. Oviposition rate on that prey was also higher for P. bickleyi (4.2 eggs/day). For C. brevistilis, the highest level of oviposition was on Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood) (1.2 eggs/day). Survivorship was always higher for C. brevistilis (≥ 70%), given its ability to remain alive relatively long even in the absence of prey. High rates of survivorship of P. bickleyi were observed on A. tulipae, Bradysia matogrossensis (Lane) and Protorhabditis sp. Promising results were obtained for P. bickleyi on A. tulipae and even on other prey, justifying the conduction of complementary studies under field condition.  相似文献

Leptocybe invasa Fisher & La Salle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is an invasive pest in Eucalyptus plantations around the world. The successful colonization of L. invasa is possibly related to its reproductive biology. The objective of this study was to examine the reproductive biology of L. invasa. In Guangxi Province, the sex ratio (proportion of female, 0.99) of L. invasa was female-dominant throughout the year based on natural and artificial infestation. This result was similar to the ratios observed for other geographic populations in China, including those in Fujian (0.99), Guangdong (0.98), Hainan (0.95), Jiangxi (0.96), and Sichuan (0.99). The offspring sex ratio favored females. A large number of females emerged from the galls produced by females, with few males found. Galls on the petioles and midribs of Eucalyptus plants could be caused by newly emerged females with mature eggs. The lengths of the ovariole, spermatheca, common oviduct, and reproductive glands did not differ among L. invasa females, but their lateral oviducts showed differences from 0 to 42 h after emergence, indicating that this insect is proovigenic. These results could explain why L. invasa populations can rapidly increase in invaded areas.  相似文献

Egg maturation in Calliphora vicina is known to occur within a wide range of temperatures, from 12°C to nearly 30°C (Vinogradova, 1991). Photoperiodism has no effect on this process. Some females enter diapause already at 20°C; their fraction increases at lower temperatures and reaches 100% at 6°C. Reproducing females with eggs can survive for a long time and even lay eggs at low temperatures (4–5°C). Experiments with C. vicina from Leningrad Province revealed some effects of the diet (liver or fish) and temperature on the fly reproduction. At 20 and 25°C, 7–10-day old females begin to oviposit, but at 20°C egg maturation is observed in 98% of females feeding on liver and in only 5% of females feeding on fish. On the liver diet, the mean daily fecundity is significantly correlated with the day of oviposition but not with the temperature. At 20°C a significant correlation is observed between the mean daily fecundity and both the day of oviposition and food. The total number of eggs laid by flies after feeding on fish is half that produced after feeding on liver. The optimal conditions for Calliphora vicina cultivation are a 16-h light day, temperatures within the range from 20 to 25°C, and liver as food.  相似文献

The sweet potato Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., which has extrafloral nectaries, was visited by nine indigenous ant species in south Kyushu, Japan. These ant species were evaluated for their ability to remove the eggs of two lepidopteran species—Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus) and Spodoptera litura (Fabricius)—through ant-exclusion experiments. The results showed that Tetramorium bicarinatum (Nylander), one of the dominant ant species, is an efficient predator of lepidopteran eggs. This ant species removed A. leucomelas eggs from ant-visited plants in six trials conducted from mid-July to mid-October, with high removal rates (90–100%) occurring from mid-September onward. On ant-excluded plants, only 0–18% of exposed eggs were removed by ants that accidentally invaded the plants. Tetramorium bicarinatum also removed egg masses and the hatchlings of S. litura. The mean percent area of egg-laden leaves eaten by S. litura larvae was lower on ant-visited plants (0.9%) than on ant-excluded plants (57.3%). In contrast, Formica japonica Motschulsky, another dominant ant species, was not observed removing the eggs or larvae of the lepidopteran species. These results show that certain indigenous ant species are efficient as biocontrol agents. Thus, individual ant species need to be investigated for their ability to control insect pests in various crops.  相似文献
