The mechanisms by which melanin‐based colour polymorphism can evolve and be maintained in wild populations are poorly known. Theory predicts that colour morphs have differential sensitivity to environmental conditions. Recently it has been proposed that colour polymorphism covaries genetically with intrinsic and behavioural properties. Plumage moult is a costly and crucial somatic maintenance function in birds. We used a long‐term data set consisting of 761 observations on 307 individuals captured between 1985 and 2010 to examine differences in partial flight feather moult between grey (pale) and brown (pheomelanic dark) colour morphs of the tawny owl. We find that the brown morph consistently moult more primary flight feathers than the grey morph whereas there is no clear difference between colour morphs in the moulting of secondary feathers. Contrary to expectations, the difference in the number of moulted flight feathers between the morphs was independent of environmental conditions, as quantified by the abundance of prey. We discuss the potential physiological and behavioural causes for and costs of the observed difference in maintenance functions between colour morphs. 相似文献

We know very little about physiological constraints on the evolution of life-history traits in general, and, in particular, about physiological and molecular adjustments that accompany the evolution of variation in lifespan. Identifying mechanisms that underlie adaptive variation in lifespan should provide insight into the evolution of trade-offs between lifespan and other life-history traits. Telomeres, the DNA caps at the ends of linear chromosomes, usually shorten as animals age, but whether telomere rate of change is associated with lifespan is unknown. We measured telomere length in erythrocytes from five bird species with markedly different lifespans. Species with shorter lifespans lost more telomeric repeats with age than species with longer lifespans. A similar correlation is seen in mammals. Furthermore, telomeres did not shorten with age in Leach's storm-petrels, an extremely long-lived bird, but actually lengthened. This novel finding suggests that regulation of telomere length is associated not only with cellular replicative lifespan, but also with organismal lifespan, and that very long-lived organisms have escaped entirely any telomeric constraint on cellular replicative lifespan. 相似文献

Aggregation in the cellular slime moldDictyostelium discoideum is due to chemotaxis. The chemoattractant, cyclic AMP, is synthesised and released periodically by the cells. Externally applied periodic pulses of cyclic AMP can also induce differentiation in this organism. The present work examines the role of periodicityper se in cyclic AMP-mediated stimulation of cell differentiation. For this purpose we use Agip53, aDictyostelium mutant which does not develop beyond the vegetative state but can be made to aggregate and differentiate by reiterated applications of cyclic AMP. Importantly, Agip53 cells do not make or release any cyclic AMP themselves even in response to an increase in extracellular cyclic AMP. A comparison of the relative efficiencies of periodic and aperiodic stimulation shows that whereas the two patterns of stimulation are equally effective in inducing the formation of EDTA-stable cell contacts, periodic stimuli are significantly superior for inducing terminal differentiation. This suggests that there must be molecular pathways which can only function when stimulation occurs at regular intervals. 相似文献

Parasites are capable of rapid evolutionary changes relative to their hosts, due to short life cycle, short generation time, and high fecundity. The direction of the evolution of parasite virulence can be studied in cross-transfer experiments, combining hosts and parasites from different localities, and comparing the outcome of established (sympatric and potentially locally adapted) and novel (allopatric) combinations of hosts and parasites. We aimed to compare the compatibility with snails hosts, the infectivity of metacercariae in rabbits and rats, and the fitness among different combinations (French-FF and Spanish-SS sympatries and allopatry-FS). The first isolate of Fasciola hepatica and its corresponding intermediate host, Lymnaea truncatula originated from Lugo's northwestern Spain. The second isolate of parasite and snail was collected in the Limoges area in central France. The Spanish snails were more susceptible to their sympatric trematode than the French snails. The Spanish flukes were more infective to intermediate hosts (snails) than the French flukes, but subsequent definitive hosts (rats or rabbits) infections remained similar. The estimated fitness was low in sympatric infections and highly similar (from 4.7 to 5.3). The fitness similarity corresponds, however, to different variations in life-history traits that could represent different strategies among the host-parasite local combinations. The infection rate in snails, metacercarial productivity, metacercarial infectivity, and the estimated fitness were better for allopatric combination (FS). The susceptibility data showed a higher efficiency of flukes in the allopatric snail population than in their local snail population. However, our results were obtained after one generation and from a single isolate and it remains to be determined if all allopatric fluke-snail isolates may present a better fitness. Nevertheless our results indicate that introduction of liver fluke-infected cattle should be monitored carefully, as it could result in the introduction of more efficient parasites. 相似文献

Studies of the attractiveness of female bodies have focussed strongly on the waist, hips and bust, but sexual selection operates on whole phenotypes rather than the relative proportions of just two or three body parts. Here, we use body scanners to extract computer‐generated images of 96 Chinese women’s bodies with all traits unrelated to body shape removed. We first show that Chinese and Australian men and women rate the attractiveness of these bodies the same. We then statistically explore the roles of age, body weight and a range of length and girth measures on ratings of attractiveness. Last, we use nonlinear selection analysis, a statistical approach developed by evolutionary biologists to explore the interacting effects of suites of traits on fitness, to study how body traits interact to determine attractiveness. Established proxies of adiposity and reproductive value, including age, body mass index and waist‐to‐hip ratio, were all correlated with attractiveness. Nonlinear response surface methods using the original traits consistently outperform all of these indices and ratios, suggesting that indices of youth and abdominal adiposity tell only part of the story of body attractiveness. In particular, our findings draw attention to the importance of integration between abdominal measures, including the bust, and the length and girth of limbs. Our results provide the most comprehensive analysis to date of the effect of body shape and fat deposition on female attractiveness. 相似文献

Two calcium carbonate crystal polymorphs, aragonite and calcite, are the main inorganic components of mollusk shells. Some fossil evidences suggest that aragonite shell is more ancient than calcite shell for the Bivalvia. But, the molecular biology evidence for the above deduction is absent. In this study, we searched for homologs of bivalve aragonite-related and calcite-related shell proteins in the oyster genome, and found that no homologs of calcite-related shell protein but some homologs of aragonite-related shell proteins in the oyster genome. We explained the results as the new evidence to support that aragonite shells are more ancient than calcite shells in bivalves combined the published biogeological and seawater chemistry data. 相似文献

X-linked genes can evolve slower or faster depending on whether most recessive, or at least partially recessive alleles are deleterious or beneficial due to their hemizygous expression in males. Molecular studies of X chromosome divergence have provided conflicting evidence for both a higher and lower rate of nucleotide substitution at both synonymous and nonsynonymous sites, depending on the nucleotide sites sampled. Using human and mouse orthologous genes, we tested the hypothesis that genes encoding male-specific sperm proteins are evolving faster on the X chromosome compared with autosomes. X-linked sperm proteins have an average nonsynonymous mutation rate almost twice as high as sperm genes found on autosomes, unlike other tissue-specific genes, where no significant difference in the nonsynonymous mutation rate between the X chromosome and autosomes was found. However, no difference was found in the average synonymous mutation rate of X-linked versus autosomal sperm proteins, which along with corresponding higher values of Ka/Ks in X-linked sperm proteins suggest that differences in selective forces and not mutation rates are the underlying cause of higher X-linked mammalian sperm protein divergence. 相似文献

Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein of the transferrin family, today known to have multifunctional physiological
activities. In humans, under normal conditions, LF has been found in blood, mucosal secretions, gastrointestinal fluids, urine
and mostly in milk and colostrum. The first pioneering immunohistochemical report about LF distribution in human tissues dated
in 1978; successively, many studies have been performed to analyze the LF immunohistochemical pattern in different normal
and neoplastic tissues. In this review, we present data from literature concerning the evidence of LF in tumors together with
those by us obtained during more than 25 years; the immunohistochemical applications to human neoplastic tissues have been
done to investigate the LF pathogenetic role as well as its activity in cancer. After a systematic analysis of LF immunoreactivity
in different human districts, a possible explanation for its presence and function has been modulated for each site or tissue,

The observation that retrieval returns a stable memory into a labile state cannot be readily explained by any simple version of consolidation theory. This finding has been interpreted as evidence for the need to reconsolidate a memory after reactivating it. However, as we discuss in this commentary, other behavioural observations indicate that even this modification to consolidation theory may be insufficient to describe the dynamic properties of memory. 相似文献
