Summary A revision and extension of Vandermeer's algorithm for choosing size categories from demographic data is presented along with an example of its use. The extension permits an exact consideration of sample populations which may have different underlying transition probabilities at different census periods and/or within different subpopulations. In order to study the packaging of rabies virus RNA inside the viral nucleocapsid, rabies nucleoprotein was expressed in insect cells. In the cells, it binds to cellular RNA to form long, helical or short circular complexes, depending on the length of the bound RNA. The circular complexes contained from 9 up to 13 N-protomers per ring. Separation of the rings into defined size classes was impossible through regular column chromatographies or gradient centrifugation. The size classes could be separated by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A large-scale separation was achieved with a 4% native gel using a preparative electrophoresis apparatus. Crystallization trials were set up with N-RNA rings from three size classes and crystals were obtained in all cases. The best diffracting crystals, diffracting up to 6A, contained rings with 11 N-protomers plus an RNA molecule of 99 nucleotides. The diffraction limit was improved to 3.5A by air dehydration prior to flash freezing. 相似文献

In this paper we present a simple method for identifying life-history perturbations in population projection matrices that yield an accelerating population growth rate. Accelerating growth means that the dependence of the growth rate on the perturbation is convex. Convexity, when the second sensitivity of the growth rate is positive, is calculated using a new formula derived from the transfer function of the perturbed system. This formula is used to explore the relationship between stasis and growth probabilities from stage-structured population projection matrices. 相似文献

The population projection model based on generalized age-dependent branching processes developed by Mode and Busby (1981) involves the solution of a large number of renewal type equations. It is shown that these equations may be solved recursively. Such a solution has two implications. One is that the projection model may be very efficiently computerized. Second, the recursive algorithm developed has striking similarities to two traditional methods of population projection used by demographers: the Leslie matrix and cohort component methods. The results presented here associate traditional projection techniques with the theory of age-dependent branching processes. 相似文献

The eigenvalues of a population projection matrix-except for the Lotka coefficient-are uniquely determined by the reproductive values and the survival. This relation (proposed earlier, but not really well known in western literature) follows from another useful relation between fertility, reproductive values, survival, and Lotka’s coefficient. In both parental controls and the hybrid embryos, the presence and distribution of extracellular matrix was analysed with fluorescent wheat germ agglutinin and by immunolabelling with antibodies directed against fibronectin. InB. bufo andB. calamita gastrulae and in the few hybrids that complete gastrulation, the inner surface of the blastocoel roof is covered by a fibronectin-rich fibrillar matrix. A nonlinear stochastic model for the dynamics of a population with either a continuous size structure or a discontinuous stage
structure is formulated in the Eulerian formalism. It takes into account dispersion effects due to stochastic variability
of the development process of the individuals. The discrete equations of the numerical approximation are derived, and an analysis
of the existence and stability of the equilibrium states is performed. An application to a copepod population is illustrated;
numerical results of Eulerian and Lagrangian models are compared.

We describe the allometry of body mass and body size as measured by hind-tibia length in males of Monoctonus paulensis (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae, Aphidiinae), a solitary parasitoid of aphids. To assess the influence of host quality on allometric relationships, we reared parasitoids on second and fourth nymphal instars of four different aphid species, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), Macrosiphum creelii Davis, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Sitobion avenae (F.), under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Dry mass was positively correlated with hind-tibia length, and could be predicted from it, in unparasitized aphids, in aphid mummies containing parasitoid pupae, and in the parasitoid. The reduced-major-axis scaling exponents for the regression of dry mass on hind-tibia length were species-specific in aphids, reflecting differences in volume and shape between species. In mummified aphids, the stage at death influenced the size/mass relationship. In males of M. paulensis, the allometric exponent varied between parasitoids developing in different kinds of host. Individuals developing in pea aphid were absolutely larger in dry mass as well as proportionately larger relative to their hind-tibia length. We discuss the allometry of body size and body mass in relation to parasitoid fitness. 相似文献
