The effects of starvation on secretion of a dispersal pheromone released or produced by female German cockroaches (Blattella germanica L.) when crowded was investigated. The experiments tested the response of adult males to filter paper conditioned by moderate and high densities of 10-day-old females. Repellency increased with increased density of fed females. Papers conditioned by starved females were not repellent. The results were similar for the two densities tested. Food availability is therefore a major factor in the control of secretion of a dispersal pheromone that females secrete when stressed by crowding.
Résumé L'examen a porté sur l'effet du jeûne sur la sécrétion d'une phéromone de dispersion émise par les femelles de B. germanica, maintenues à forte densité. Les expériences ont jugé les réponses des mâles à des papiers filtres imprégnés par des femelles de 10 jours maintenues à des densités moyennes et élevées. La répulsion a augmenté avec la densité des femelles alimentées; le papier provenant de femelles nonalimentées n'était pas répulsif. Les résultats étaient très voisins pour les deux densités. On peut en conclure que la disponibilité en aliments est le principal facteur contrôlant la sécrétion et/ou la production d'une phéromone de dispersion, sécrétée par les femelles gènées par une densité élevée.

The effects of dispenser type, dispenser aging in the field, pheromone dose in the dispenser and trap type on trapping efficiency of codling moth,Cydia pomonella (L.), males were investigated in Israel. An Israeli-manufactured rubber septum was significantly better than the CM Pherocon cap in attracting males to a Pherocon 1C cap trap or an IPS trap. The effect of aging of the dispenser in the field on trapping efficiency was significant in CM Pherocon caps and the Israeli septa. Captures in traps were negatively correlated with aging of septa. The effect of aging of dispensers was more marked during summer than during spring. The fairly rapid loss of attractancy indicates that the lures should be replaced after 2 weeks at the most. The release rate of the pheromone from the dispensers was measured in a flow system. The emission from the Israeli septa and Pherocon caps decreased sharply after 2 weeks and then was almost constant, which explains the lower attractancy of aged septa. However, there was a marked difference in the release profiles of the pheromone from the two types of dispensers, which may explain the different performance of the two dispensers. Within the range of 0.1 to 100 μg pheromone per dispenser, male response increased positively with the pheromone dose. Pheromone loadings of 100 or 1000 μg per dispenser did not differ significantly in their attractiveness for males. A load of 5000 μg per dispenser was significantly less attractive to males than was 100 or 1000 μg per dispenser. The non-sticky IPS trap was significantly better in capturing codling moth males than was the sticky, commonly used Pherocon 1C trap, provided it was baited with the Israeli dispenser. The two traps were equally effective when baited with the CM Pherocon caps. The possibility of using the non-sticky, nonsaturating and easy-to-handle IPS traps for monitoring codling moth is of great importance. When small drops ofUstilago maydissporidia were placed 100–200 μm apart on agar surfaces and covered with paraffin oil, sporidia from one drop formed thin hyphae that grew in a zig-zag fashion toward the other drop if it contained sporidia making the appropriate pheromone. For example,a2b2mating hyphae grew towarda1b1anda1b2mating hyphae, and the filaments eventually fused tip to tip. Time-lapse photography indicated that the mating hyphae can rapidly change orientation in response to nearby compatible sporidia. When exposed to pheromone produced by cells in an adjacent drop, haploid sporidia with thea2allele began elongating before sporidia with thea1allele. Sporidia without functional pheromone genes responded to pheromone although they did not induce a response, and sporidia without pheromone receptors induced formation of mating hyphae although they did not form mating hyphae. Diploid sporidia heterozygous atbbut not ataformed straight, rigid, aerial filaments when exposed to pheromone produced by the appropriate haploid sporidia. Again, thea2a2b1b2strain formed filaments more quickly than thea1a1b1b2strain. Taken together, these results suggest that thea2pheromone diffuses less readily or is degraded more quickly than thea1pheromone.  相似文献

In order to obtain direct information of stimulus dynamics perceived by a male moth under field conditions a portable device was constructed which enables continuous recording of responses from individual pheromone receptors. The device is suitable for tip recording by means of micro-knives as well as for recording with tungsten electrodes making it applicable for a wide range of insects. A micro thermistor air velocity sensor is placed within 2 mm from the preparation to record the momentary air flow. The signal conditioning electronic circuits are battery powered, and the signals can be stored on a portable tape recorder. Field recordings were made from individual male antennal pheromone receptors ofAegeria myopaeformis andAdoxophyes orana. In all recordings the instantaneous firing frequency of the receptor cells was strongly modulated by the air velocity. Analysis of the data may provide information about the average pheromone concentration and the fine structure of pheromone plumes under various conditions.  相似文献

The reproductive success of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), an invasive fish, may be mediated by the use of pheromones. We hypothesized that reproductive male (RM) round gobies release sex pheromone to which reproductive females (RF) respond. In this study, we compared behavioural and electrophysiological responses of reproductive and non-reproductive female round gobies to conspeci fic males. Results of behavioural experiments in the laboratory showed that RF spent significantly more time near the source of the male odour compared with odours from control water. However, RF did not distinguish between odours from non-reproductive male (non-RM) water and control water. Non-reproductive females (non-RF) were not attracted to odours released from RM or non-RM water. Results of electro-olfactogram (EOG) responses showed that both RF and non-RF discriminated between HPLC fractionated RM and non-RM odours. However, the EOG responses of RF were about eight-fold higher than non-RF exposed to RM odours. These findings confirm that RM round gobies release a pheromone signal that attracts RF. The results of this research may be useful in developing control strategy using natural pheromones to disrupt the reproductive behaviour of the invasive round goby and to curtail its effects on native species. Summary Queen attendance behavior of workers from selected honey bee colonies with high and low worker retinue response to synthetic queen mandibular gland pheromone (QMP) was investigated. Antennating, licking, grooming, and feeding of the queen by workers from high and low responding colonies were examined. High and low QMP responding workers did not attend the queen differently. However, workers originating from different colonies antennated and licked the queen more frequently than others, suggesting there may be a genetic basis for queen attendance behavior not necessarily associated with response to QMP. Although atmospheric treatment with synthetic pheromone is used commercially to control several lepidopteran pests, little is known about how mate-finding behavior is altered by this procedure. Mechanisms of disruption of the mate-finding behavior of Choristoneura rosaceana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) were examined in wind tunnel bioassays. Male moths were exposed to synthetic sex pheromone or pheromone components prior to or during upwind flight to a calling virgin female. The proportion of males successfully contacting a calling female was reduced only when the synthetic pheromone treatment was presented simultaneously. A synthetic source of the attractive four-component pheromone placed upwind of a calling female was more effective than a less attractive two-component blend in achieving disorientation. Habituation of the central nervous system does not appear to be a significant factor in disruption of mate-finding behavior of male C. rosaceana, as exposure to pheromone prior to the bioassay did not alter the proportion of males that achieved subsequent upwind flight. Disruption of mate-finding behavior of C. rosaceana in a wind tunnel is probably the result of a combination of mechanisms including adaptation of antennal receptors, camouflage of the female-produced plume, and false-trail following which contributed to the additive disruption effect observed with the most attractive four-component pheromone.  相似文献

Isolation of vitellogenin of the Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) in its gregarious phase was achieved by a combination of gel permeation and anion exchange chromatography. Staining for carbohydrate and lipid moieties showed that the vitellogenin is a glycolipoprotein. The vitellogenin of S. gregaria has a native molecular weight of about 700 kDa. On SDS-PAGE, the protein showed nine apoproteins of about 124, 120, 105, 60, 59, 58, 57, 53 and 34 kD. Determination of the levels of vitellogenin by ELISA in the haemolymph of maturing females showed that those exposed to mature males from 1 to 2 days after ecdysis had increased levels of vitellogenin from day 10 (81.1 ± 4.5). In contrast, females exposed to immature males or kept alone showed an increase (107.3 ± 0.9 and 70.2 ± 2.7) not until day 16 or later, respectively. These results are consistent with the accelerating effect of pheromonal emissions from mature males on the maturation of female S. gregaria.  相似文献

Mating disruption of the pine sawflyNeodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) was strongly indicated by reduced male trap catches in pine plantations permeated with the sex phermone, (2S, 3S, 7S)-diprionly acetate. The trap catch reduction was 95 to near 100% when dispensers every 10 m were used, giving a total release of about 3 mg per hectare and day. Two mg of pheromone per cotton roll dispenser maintained low catches for the whole season (about 2 months) without any renewal of disruption dispensers. Anerythro-mixture was as effective as the pure pheromone isomer. The effects of the experiments on population density and sex ratio were not possible to investigate, due to a general collapse of the population, also outside experimental plots, the year after the experiments.  相似文献

MaleHeliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were made to fly into a uniformly white and translucent tube within a large wind tunnel while responding to sex pheromone. Different visual patterns placed within the tube greatly affected the ability of the male moths to maintain upwind progress or remain oriented to the wind while in contact with the plume. Over 89% of males attempting to fly through a blank tube, lacking visual patterns, became disoriented, the males gaining or losing altitude and repeatedly hitting the sides of the tube. Patterns of 20–40 dots placed on the sides of the tube at or slightly above plume level resulted in high levels of sustained upwind flight (47–74%) relative to patterns placed directly below (30–40%), directly above (35%), or slightly below the level of the flight path (26–44%). Optimal upwind progression in pheromone-responding males occurred when image motion could be resolved both transversely (T), orthogonally to the longitudinal axis of the body relative to the horizontal plane of the environment, and longitudinally (L), along the body axis. Even very sparse patterns (single rows of dots) could elicit high levels of sustained upwind flight (53–63%) when positioned within the tube such that the males' movements would create both L and T image motion. However, successful negotiation of the tube was also unexpectedly facilitated by patterns apparently providing no horizontal transverse component for flying males but providing longitudinal flow while centering the moth in the plume through a symmetrical left-right input (4–40%).  相似文献

The response of early, middle and late instar (mixed sexes), adult male, and gravid and non-gravid female German cockroaches to aggregation pheromone on filter papers conditioned by gravid and non-gravid females was studied. Cockroaches were attracted to and settled on each of the conditioned papers. Classes varied in the strength of their response to conditioned papers, relative response to gravid versus non-gravid female conditioned paper, and in clustering behavior. A significantly greater attraction of all classes except middle instars and non-gravid females to paper conditioned by non-gravid females suggests that non-gravid females emit more aggregation pheromone than gravid females. Possible explanations of differences in response with age/sex class, including an enhanced attraction of males from female sex phermone, are discussed.
Résumé L'étude a porté sur les réponses de six groupes/âges/sexes de B. germanica à des papiers filtres imprégnés de phéromones émises par des femelles pleines ou non. Tous les groupes ont été attirés par les papiers traités, mais les attractions des stades larvaires moyens ou âgés ont été inférieures aux autres. 4 groupes sur 6 ont été plus attirés par le papier traité avec des femelles ne contenant pas d'oeufs mûrs que par les femelles pleines, ce qui suggère une plus forte émission par les femelles sans oeufs mûrs. Les stades larvaires moyens ont été les seuls à être plus attirés par le papier traité avec les femelles pleines. Les femelles ne contenant aucun oeuf ne manifestent aucune préférence. La tendance à former des amas inégaux était moins nette pour les stades larvaires moyens et âgés que pour les autres groupes. Les premiers stades ont montré une tendance très nette à se rassembler sur le même papier. Le rassemblement de mâles adultes sur du papier traité avec des femelles ne contenant pas d'oeufs peut avoir été partiellement une réponse à la phéromone sexuelle femelle qui avait imprégné le papier pendant le conditionnement.

Summary The hypothesis thatBelonogaster petiolata (fam. Vespidae) is able to communicate alarm chemically, using odours released with the venom, was tested in bioassays involving presentation of artificial targets to a wasp colony, simultaneously with crushed venom apparatuses. The odour of venom did not lower the threshold of attack and visual stimuli alone (particularly a black, moving object) were sufficient to release attack. Venom odour on a previously stung target probably does not play a role in focusing further attacks on such a target. The results therefore support the null hypothesis that a venom-based alarm pheromone is absent in this species.  相似文献

Using behavioural and electrophysiological assay techniques, we identified the posterior half of the midgut as being a principal site of production of a major component of the oviposition-deterring, fruit-marking pheromone of female Rhagoletis pomonella flies. Following secretion into, and accumulation in, the gut lumen, this component is released, together with other gut contents, in the marking trail deposited during dragging of the ovipositor on the fruit surface after egg-laying, as well as in the faeces. Experimental evidence shows that oviposition in Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is deterred by the presence of conspecific larvae. A similar deterrent effect is also recorded when females are tested in an experimental set up that previously housed conspecific larvae. It is shown that an oviposition-deterring pheromone is associated with the abundant wax filaments produced by the larvae of C. montrouzieri.  相似文献

We present here the results of an investigation of the behavioral bases of the first documented instance of trail marking and processionary behavior in a beetle. The larvae of Phelypera distigma (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) forage communally, moving over the host plant in head-to-tail processions. Our study shows that the larvae secrete a pheromone from the ventral surface of the posterior abdomen that both elicits and guides the collective locomotion of the cohort. The pheromone is soluble in acetone and other nonpolar solvents and is relatively short-lived, eliciting trail following for less than 4 h after its deposition. When in processionary formations, larvae stimulate locomotion in others by rapidly bobbing their heads against sets of setae that occur on the lateral flanks of the posterior tips of the abdomens of precedent individuals. Larvae are also strongly attracted to tactile or chemotactile stimuli found at the tip of the abdomen of other larvae and their response to lures made of eviscerated abdomens show that such stimuli take precedence over the trail pheromone in eliciting and orienting locomotion. The cycloalexic formations adopted by resting larvae maximize the amount of body contact possible in a two-dimensional aggregate and allow tactile signals to rapidly radiate through the groups, alerting all members of a cohort to the onset of bouts of activity.  相似文献

Investigations were conducted on oviposition by laboratory-reared oblique-banded leafrollers, Choristoneura rosaceana Harris. In paperbag oviposition chambers, females deposited their egg masses in a significantly nonrandom, uniform manner in 16 of 20 replicates. Inpetri dish oviposition chambers, gravid females were exposed to egg masses recently deposited by other females. As determined by the magnitude of the mean direction vector of the second egg mass in relation to the first, females detected and avoided egg masses laid by other females. In addition, they avoided waxed paper from which a recently oviposited egg mass had been removed. This phenomenon is most likely due to a pheromone laid down with each egg mass.  相似文献

We tested the efficacy of synthetic host marking pheromone (HMP) of the European cherry fruit fly (R. cerasi) as a fruit-infestation-reducing-agent in an experimental cherry orchard. Two different pheromone deployment strategies were compared: covering entire tree canopies with synthetic HMP or treating only one half (top to bottom or lower half) of the tree canopy. Pheromone application caused a tenfold reduction in fruit infestation if the entire tree canopy was covered (0.226 vs 0.021 pupae/fruit in untreated and treated trees, respectively). Results show, nevertheless, that a significant reduction in fruit infestation can be achieved by treating only one half of tree canopies (top to bottom) (0.021 vs 0.048 pupae/fruit when comparing totally vs partially treated trees). We conclude that synthetic cherry fruit fly HMP has potential as a fruit fly management tool, especially in cases where organically grown fruit reaches high market values.  相似文献
