The first detailed anatomical study of a primary larva of Meloidae is presented. Thereby techniques such as three-dimensional reconstructions, microtome sections, SEM (scanning electronic microscopy) and CLSM (confocal laser scanning microscopy) are applied. The structural features are discussed in the context of phylogeny, but also possible correlations with parasitism, phoresy and miniaturisation. The triungulin first instar larva is likely an apomorphy of Meloidae excl. Eleticinae and linked with a specialisation on acridoid eggs or larvae and provisions of bees. The campodeid body shape of Lytta and Meloinae is a groundplan feature of Meloidae, whereas a navicular body is an autapomorphy of the generally phoretic larvae of Nemognathinae. Head structures of Lytta and features of the postcephalic body are largely plesiomorphic. The musculature of the head is only moderately simplified while the one of the postcephalic body is well developed. Its thorax is largely characterised by plesiomorphies. The characteristics of the legs suggest phoretic habits, even though this does not apply to larvae of Lytta. It is conceivable that a phoretic behaviour is secondarily lost, together with some but not all morphological modifications related to it. Derived features of the abdomen of Meloidae are the complete loss of the fixed urogomphi (also missing in Rhipiphoridae and other related groups) and the presence of one or two conspicuous caudal bristles. Only few features of Lytta are shared with the parasitic larvae of Rhipiphoridae and Strepsiptera. These characteristics, which are possibly linked with specialised life habits, have obviously evolved independently. Miniaturisation effects are minimal in the larvae of Lytta.  相似文献

The pygmy males of Chondracanthus angustatus are fixed on the genital segment of the female on two anterior-ventral tubercules. The genital system is formed by two dorsal testes, two broad vas deferens and two seminal vesicles each one containing a spermatophore. Two types of cells can be seen in the interstitial tram: the sexual (normal and abortive) and the somatic ones. The plasmic and nuclear membranes joined together on one end of the spermatid; on the opposite pole, the mitochondria penetrate into the cytoplasmic expansions. The non-motile starfish spermatozoa present neither di-ferentiated acrosome nor centrioles. The male gametes are stocked in the spermatophore and enveloped by many kinds of secretions. Spermatozoa are discharged into the female integument folds and they reach the seminal receptacle with the help of the villosities movement; they stay there till fertilization occurs.  相似文献

Meloid beetles are well characterised by both morphological and biological features. Previous phylogenetic hypotheses based on morphological characters assumed the repeated parallel evolution of complex biological novelties. In this work relationships among several taxa of the four subfamilies and almost all tribes representing meloid diversity are examined by using mitochondrial (16S) and nuclear (ITS2) DNA sequences, in 25 genera (using Anthicidae as outgroup). Secondary structure of 16S and ITS2 rRNAs were modelled. ITS2 structure represents a synapomorphic condition for the family and informative characters at the tribal level. Phylogenetic hypotheses based on separate and combined analysis of the 16S and ITS2 rDNA sequences, and morpho-biological characters were tested, and compared with previous morphological classifications. Molecular dating allowed an outline of the main steps of the evolutionary history of Meloidae, which evolved during Early Cretaceous and then radiated considerably with the adoption of hypermetaboly and parasitic behaviour, and with repeated, parallel evolution of larval phoresy on its hosts.  相似文献

This study deals with the organization of the coelom in the all the parts of the body of the vestimentiferan Oasisia alvinae. The localization of the dissepiment between the vestimental and trunk regions in males and females differs. The histological structure and anatomy of the trophosome and the vascular, excretory, and reproductive systems is described. Three cell types are distinguishable in each trophosome lobe. Up to four bacteriocytes could be found in a row from the central blood vessel to the surface of the organ. The main blood vessels in almost all parts of the body have a well-developed muscle sheath and an endothelium that is expressed in varying degrees. In the trunk region, an intravasal body, which is represented by two modifications, is observed in the dorsal blood vessel. The excretory tree is located under the brain. The reproductive system is symmetrical in males and dissymmetrical in females. The gonoducts of females are extensive; in males, they are short and open in the front part of the reproductive coelom. The genital coeloms of both sexes perform the functions of gamete production and storage.  相似文献

Gross anatomical, histological and histochemical studies of heart development in Mexican salamanders, Ambystoma mexicanum, are reported. Gross observation suggests that heart development in this urodele species is similar to other amphibians. Histological studies in early embryos show the ventromedially migrating sheets of precardiac mesoderm to be composed of two layers of cells. The right and left dorsal layers fuse and give rise to the myocardium, while the ventral layers form the pericardium. The endocardium arises from cells released by the leading edges of the migrating mesoderm mantles. In early myocardial cells, most of the proteins and carbohydrates are contained in yolk platelets; subsequently, these substances become distributed throughout the cytoplasmic matrixes. In early heart cells free lipid droplets are abundant but decline in size and number as development progresses. Concomitantly, there is an increase in bound lipids. Reticular fibers are detected in the endocardial-myocardial spaces simultaneously with trabeculae formation. Collagen appears somewhat later in development.  相似文献

Laparocerus are plant‐chewing flightless weevils distributed on oceanic islands in Macaronesia, with a single species in Morocco. The genus has a complicated taxonomic history with several subgenera described. To assist in a taxonomical revision of the group, a molecular study was undertaken. In this first contribution, the species from the Azores and Madeira archipelagos are studied together with representatives of subgenera from the Canary Islands and the single known continental species (46 OTUs). Phylogenetic analyses are based on sequence data from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase II (COII) and the ribosomal 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) genes (combined data set 1023 bp), with additional data from the nuclear elongation factor 1α (EF‐1α) for some selected species. Maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian analyses show that all Madeiran species are monophyletic and form a monophyletic group with the Afro‐Canarian samples. Species of the genus Lichenophagus appear within the Madeiran and Canarian Laparocerus clades, but separated in accordance with their respective island origin. Thus, Lichenophagus is here restricted to Madeiran species and proposed as subgenus (status novo) of Laparocerus. Conversely, the Laparocerus subgenus Drouetius from the Azores is revealed to be a separate and distant outgroup, in agreement with its morphological distinctiveness, deserving an independent genus status. Internal relationships within the Madeiran clade are discussed and compared with morphologically defined species groups. The Madeiran monotypic subgenus Cyphoscelis is not supported by the genetic data and synonymized (nov. syn.) with Laparocerus. Subgenera Laparocerus and Atlantis prove to be polyphyletic. Consequently a restriction to monophyletic and morphologically congruent clades is proposed. A cryptic species vicariant of Laparocerus morio was detected and recognized as L. chaoensis, status novo. Other cases of discrepancy between the genetic results and the traditional taxonomy are discussed in detail in the light of mitochondrial introgression, incomplete lineage sorting or poor taxonomy hypotheses.  相似文献

Understanding regional variability in species richness is necessary for conservation efforts to succeed in the face of large-scale environmental deterioration. Several analyses of North American vertebrates have shown that climatic energy provides the best explanation of contemporary species richness patterns. The paucity of analyses of insect diversity patterns, however, remains a serious obstacle to a general hypothesis of spatial variation in diversity. We collected species distribution data on a North American beetle genus, Epicauta (Coleoptera: Meloidae) and tested several major diversity hypotheses. These beetles are generally grasshopper egg predators as larvae, and angiosperm herbivores as adults. Epicauta richness is highest in the hot, dry American southwest, and decreases north and east, consistent with the species richness-energy hypothesis. Potential evapotranspiration, which is also the best predictor of richness patterns among North American vertebrates, explains 80.2% of the variability in Epicauta species richness. Net primary productivity and variables measuring climatic heat energy only (such as PET) are not generally comparable, though they are sometimes treated as if they were equivalent. We conclude that the species richness-energy hypothesis currently provides a better overall explanation for Epicauta species richness patterns in North America than other major diversity hypotheses. The observed relationship between climatic energy and regional species richness may provide significant insight into the response of ecological communities to climate change.  相似文献

The study of sexual behavior has been largely utilized in phylogenetic analyses of Meloidae beetles. Sexual behavior of the tribe Cerocomini is almost unknown, even though the genus Cerocoma shows the most striking sexual dimorphism in the family. In this paper, the sexual behavior of five species, C. (Cerocoma) adamovichiana, C. (C.) graeca, C. (C.) schaefferi, C. (Metacerocoma) schreberi, and C. (M.) prevezaensis, is described. The cleaning behavior of this genus, previously unknown, is also discussed. A morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy of sexually dimorphic anatomical features of antennae, maxillary palpi, and forelegs, involved in cleaning and sexual activities, is carried out.  相似文献

A morphological-anatomical study of Australian populations of Metamastophora flabellata (Sonder) Setchell, the type species of Metamastophora (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta), has revealed that the primarily erect or ascending non-geniculate thallus possesses a dorsi-ventral organization of tissues. All conceptacles are uniporate and arise dorsally. Two distinct vegetative meristems occur: an apical primary meristem from which hypothallial cells are produced basipetally and a sub-epithallial secondary meristem which generates perithallial cells basipetally and secondary epithallial cells acropetally. Primary epithallial cells arise from divisions of subapical hypothallial cells. In younger parts, tissues are produced only dorsal to the hypothallium; in veins and stipes, tissue production occurs both dorsal and ventral to the hypothallium. Mature tetrasporic conceptacles contain peripheral tetrasporangia with zonately divided contents and a central sterile columella. Gametic conceptacles produce fertile tissue across the entire conceptacle chamber floor. After fertilization, the zygotic nucleus or a derivative is transferred (presumably) to an auxiliary cell through cells of the carpogonial branch; no tubular transfer siphon develops. Mature fusion cells are composed of the amalgamated supporting cells of carpogonial branches and are initiated from a single supporting cell which functions as an auxiliary cell. Unbranched 3–4 celled gonimoblast filaments arise from the fusion cell, do not become connected to other cells, and produce terminal carposporangia. Results from this study have led to a redefinition of hypothallium and perithallium in relation to meristems rather than substrate. In addition, carposporophyte ontogeny in the Corallinaceae is considered in terms of the presumed mode of transfer of the zygotic nucleus to the fusion cell, the extent of fusion cell development, and gonimoblast filament production in relation to auxiliary cells and fusion cells.  相似文献
