The Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia) is a pest on wheat (Triticum aestivum) in many regions of the world. The aphid injects a phytotoxin when it feeds. Identification of somaclonal variants with phytotoxin resistance may shorten development time for resistance. Wheat calli from the susceptible cultivar Stephens were exposed to an extract from the aphid. Five plants were regenerated from 100 treated calli. Resistance to the aphid was observed in both the R2 and R3 generations. One of the six R3 populations had improved resistance for leaf curling and leaf folding, while another had improved response for chlorosis damage. These results indicate that the use of aphid extract on wheat callus offers an alternate method for development of resistance to the Russian wheat aphid.  相似文献

A crucial function of antioxidative enzymes is to remove excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can be toxic to plant cells. The effect of Russian wheat aphid (RWA), Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), infestation on the activities of antioxidative enzymes was investigated in the resistant (cv. Tugela DN) and the near-isogenic susceptible (cv. Tugela) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). RWA infestation significantly induced the activity of superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase and ascorbate peroxidase to higher levels in the resistant than in susceptible plants. These findings suggest the involvement of antioxidative enzymes in the RWA-wheat resistance response, which was accompanied by an early oxidative burst. The results are consistent with the role of ROS in the resistance response and the control of their levels to minimise toxic effects.  相似文献

Here we investigate the coevolutionary interactions between the slavemaking ant Protomognathus americanus and its Temnothorax hosts on a chemical level. We show that, although this social parasite is principally well-adapted to its hosts' cuticular hydrocarbon profile, there are pronounced differences in the fine-tuning of this adaptation. Between populations, chemical adaptation varies with host community composition, as the parasite faces a trade-off when confronted with more than one host species. In addition to adaptation of its own chemical signature, the slavemaker causes a reciprocal adjustment in its slaves' cuticular profile, the degree of which depends on the slave species. On the host side, successful parasite defence requires efficient enemy recognition, and in behavioural aggression trials, host colonies could indeed discriminate between invading slaves, which commonly accompany slavemakers on raids, and free-living conspecifics. Furthermore, hosts shifted their acceptance threshold over the seasons, presumably to reduce the costs of defence.  相似文献

Few studies have shown both reciprocal selection and reciprocal adaptations for a coevolving system in the wild. The goal of our study was to determine whether the patterns of selection on Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta spp. latifolia) and red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra complex) were concordant with earlier published evidence of reciprocal adaptations in lodgepole pine and crossbills on isolated mountain ranges in the absence of red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). We found that selection (directional) by crossbills on lodgepole pine where Tamiasciurus are absent was divergent from the selection (directional) exerted by Tamiasciurus on lodgepole pine. This resulted in divergent selection between areas with and without Tamiasciurus that was congruent with the geographic patterns of cone variation. In the South Hills, Idaho, where Tamiasciurus are absent and red crossbills are thought to be coevolving with lodgepole pine, crossbills experienced stabilizing selection on bill size, with cone structure as the agent of selection. These results show that crossbills and lodgepole pine exhibit reciprocal adaptations in response to reciprocal selection, and they provide insight into the traits mediating and responding to selection in a coevolutionary arms race.  相似文献

Background

One of the major recent advances in evolutionary biology is the recognition that evolutionary interactions between species are substantially differentiated among geographic populations. To date, several authors have revealed natural selection pressures mediating the geographically-divergent processes of coevolution. How local, then, is the geographic structuring of natural selection in coevolutionary systems?

Results

I examined the spatial scale of a "geographic selection mosaic," focusing on a system involving a seed-predatory insect, the camellia weevil (Curculio camelliae), and its host plant, the Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica). In this system, female weevils excavate camellia fruits with their extremely-long mouthparts to lay eggs into seeds, while camellia seeds are protected by thick pericarps. Quantitative evaluation of natural selection demonstrated that thicker camellia pericarps are significantly favored in some, but not all, populations within a small island (Yakushima Island, Japan; diameter ca. 30 km). At the extreme, camellia populations separated by only several kilometers were subject to different selection pressures. Interestingly, in a population with the thickest pericarps, camellia individuals with intermediate pericarp thickness had relatively high fitness when the potential costs of producing thick pericarps were considered. Also importantly, some parameters of the weevil - camellia interaction such as the severity of seed infestation showed clines along temperature, suggesting the effects of climate on the fine-scale geographic differentiation of the coevolutionary processes.

Conclusion

These results show that natural selection can drive the geographic differentiation of interspecific interactions at surprisingly small spatial scales. Future studies should reveal the evolutionary/ecological outcomes of the "fine scale geographic mosaics" in biological communities.  相似文献

Suspension-derived protoplasts of Agropyron elongatum irradiated by ultra-violet light (UV) were fused with the suspension-derived protoplasts of Triticum astivum using PEG. Fertile intergeneric somatic hybrid plants were produced and various hybrid lines have been selected and propagated in successive generations. Their hybrid nature was confirmed by analysis of profiles of isozymes, RAPDs, and 5S rDNA spacer sequences, and via GISH analysis. By the procedure described, the phenotype and chromosome number of wheat could be maintained besides transfer of a few chromosomes and chromosomal fragments from the donor A. elongatum. The results above indicated that highly asymmetric fertile hybrid plants and hybrid progenies of wheat were produced via somatic hybridization.  相似文献

A Study of Floret Development in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Plants of wheat (Triticum aestlvum L.) cv. Aotea were grownat high or low nitrogen levels and in a natural photoperiodor continuous light. Starting 17–21 days from the double-ridgestage, eight plants from each treatment were sampled every 3days until anthesis, and the two basal, the sixth, and the terminalspikelets were sectioned longitudinally. A developmental scorewas assigned to each floret and rates of development calculated.Continuous light hastened development but reduced the numberof spikelets per ear, while high nitrogen delayed developmentbut increased spikelet numbers. The number of florets initiatedin each spikelet varied within narrow limits, but grain settingdepended strongly on spikelet position and on treatment. Althoughflorets were initiated in acropetal succession, the rate ofdevelopment tended to increase up to floret 4 but then declinedmarkedly. As a result grain setting was confined to basal floretpositions, although the two basal spikelets developed so slowlythat they contributed relatively little to grain yield. Distalflorets degenerated almost simultaneously at or before ear emergence, but those in intermediate positions continued to develop untilafter fertilization in the lower florets. It is argued thatthe spikelet is an integrated system in which correlative mechanismsplay a part throughout the development of the florets.  相似文献

Abstract

A large part of global agricultural fields, including the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) ones, are subjected to various stresses including salinity. Given the increasing world population, finding methods and strategies that can alleviate salinity stress on crop yield production is of outmost importance. The presented review has consulted more than 400 articles related to the clean and sustainable production of wheat in saline fields affected by biological, environmental, economical, and social parameters including the important issue of climate change (global warming). The negative effects of salt stress on plant growth and the techniques, which have been so far detected to alleviate salinity stress on wheat growth have been analyzed and presented. The naturally tolerant species of wheat can use a range of mechanisms to alleviate salinity stress including sodium exclusion, potassium retention, and osmoregulation. However, the following can be considered as the most important techniques to enhance wheat tolerance under stress: (1) the biotechnological (crop breeding), biological (soil microbes), and biochemical (seed priming) methods, (2) the use of naturally tolerant genotypes, and (3) their combined use. The proper handling of irrigation water is also an important subject, which must be considered when planting wheat in saline fields. In conclusion, the sustainable and cleaner production of wheat under salt stress is determined by a combination of different parameters including the biotechnological techniques, which if handled properly, can enhance wheat production in saline fields.  相似文献

The Russian wheat aphid Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov) (Homoptera: Aphididae) is a global pest of wheat and barley. This arthropod is difficult to manage with pesticides or biological control agents due to the aphid’s ability to seek shelter in rolled leaves and also to develop virulent biotypes. During the past 20 years, the use of aphid-resistant cereal cultivars has proven to be an economically and ecologically beneficial method of protecting crops from D. noxia damage. Our research reports the results of experiments to determine the categories of D. noxia biotype 2 resistance present in Cereal Introduction Triticeae (CItr) 2401, and a barley genotype (IBRWAGP4-7), compared to control resistant and susceptible wheat and barley genotypes. CItr2401 and IBRWAGP4-7 exhibit no antixenosis, but both genotypes demonstrated antibiosis to D. noxia in the form of reduced aphid populations. Reduced leaf dry weight change, a measure of plant tolerance of D. noxia feeding, was significantly less in CItr2401 and IBRWAGP4-7 plants than in plants of susceptible control varieties. However, tolerance was negated when a tolerance index was calculated to correct for differences in aphid populations. Barley IBRWAGP4-7 is a new source of D. noxia biotype 2 resistance. D. noxia foliar leaf damage and population growth were significantly less on IBRWAGP4-7 plants than on plants of the susceptible barley variety Morex. IBRWAGP4-7 plants were equal in resistance to plants of the resistant barley STARS 9301 and wheat genotype CItr2401. Handling editor: Heikki Hokkanen  相似文献

Coevolution of exaggerated morphologies between insects and plants is a well-known but poorly understood phenomenon in evolutionary biology. In the antagonistic interaction between a seed-predatory insect, the camellia weevil (Curculio camelliae), and its host plant, Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica), we examined the evolutionary trajectory of an exaggerated offensive trait of the weevil (rostrum length) in terms of scaling relationship. Sampling throughout Japan revealed that the ratio of the rostrum length to overall body size was correlated with the ratio of the pericarp thickness to overall fruit size across the localities. We found a geographical interpopulation divergence in a parameter pertaining to the allometric equation of rostrum length (the coefficient a in y=axb, where y and x denote rostrum and body lengths, respectively), and the pattern of geographical differentiation in the allometric coefficient was closely correlated with the variation in the pericarp thickness of Japanese camellia. Our results provide a novel example of a geographically diverged scaling relationship in an insect morphology resulting from a coevolutionary arms race with its host plant.  相似文献

We present the first sequencing results after separation of the X chromosome of Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), the largest known X chromosome described to date, using flow cytometry. The X chromosome of D. noxia is 0.1824 pg (1C) and an estimated 178.4 Mb (1C) in size. Mapping confirmed that the X chromosome contains 13,799 protein coding genes, but with a slight bias towards GC richness when compared to the complete D. noxia genome.  相似文献

The existence of hybrid dwarfs from intraspecific crosses in wheat (Triticum aestivum) was described 100 years ago, and the genetics underlying hybrid dwarfness are well understood. In this study, we report a dwarf phenotype in interspecific hybrids between wheat and rye (Secale cereale). We identified two rye lines that produce hybrid dwarfs with wheat and have none of the hitherto known hybrid dwarfing genes. Genetic analyses revealed that both rye lines carry a single allelic gene responsible for the dwarf phenotype. This gene was designated Hdw‐R1 (Hybrid dwarf‐R1). Application of gibberellic acid (GA3) to both intraspecific (wheat–wheat) and interspecific (wheat–rye) hybrids showed that hybrid dwarfness cannot be overcome by treatment with this phytohormone. Histological analysis of shoot apices showed that wheat–rye hybrids with the dwarf phenotype at 21 and 45 days after germination failed to develop further. Shoot apices of dwarf plants did not elongate, did not form new primordia and had a dome‐shaped appearance in the seed. The possible relationship between hybrid dwarfness and the genes responsible for the transition from vegetative to generative growth stage is discussed.  相似文献

Suspension cultures have been initiated from embryogenic callus of hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Most commonly, these suspensions are composed of callus-like clusters (up to 2 mm in diameter). Two rapidly-growing lines (MBE6 and C82d) have been obtained, which consist of smaller aggregates of cytoplasmic cells, and these have been maintained for more than 4 years. These lines show very limited morphogenetic capacity and only a single plantlet has been regenerated, from line MBE6, after 9 months in culture. Protoplasts isolated from line MBE6 are unable to divide, but protoplasts from line C82d consistently undergo sustained divisions to form callus or secondary cell suspensions.Abbreviations 2,4-D 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid - MS Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium  相似文献

The number and developmental stages of florets were determinedin each spikelet of the spike in the main shoots of spring wheat.Samples were taken frequently from plants grown in a phytotronand in a nitrogen application field-test. Ten stages of development, from floret initiation until anthesis, were recognized and described. Inter-spikelet variation in the total number of initiated floretswas rather small. However, the number of florets at advancedstages of development, as well as the number of grains, washighest in the central spikelets in which florets initiatedfirst. Floret initiation did not proceed beyond spike emergence, whereafter the distal florets and the spikelet apex degenerated.Grain-set was restricted to florets which had developed at leastto the stage of visible anther lobes at spike emergence. Thenumber of these florets was increased significantly by nitrogenapplication. Wheat, Triticum aestivum L., spikelet, floret, grain set, nitrogen  相似文献

We investigated the change of root net proton excretion of seedlings of Triticum aestivum L. and Zea mays L. with daily variation of illumination using a multi-channel pH-stat system. We found an increase of net proton excretion during darkness and a drop after the beginning of illumination. Inhibition of carotenoid biosynthesis by norflurazone and photooxidation of chlorophylls did not change the periodicity or its induction. The induction of diurnal periodicity was possible with blue, green and red light. After induction the oscillation of net proton excretion continued for at least two cycles under constant light. We conclude that net H+ excretion of wheat and maize roots may be regulated by an endogenous clock or by a signal from the leaves. The nature of such a hypothetical signal remains unknown.  相似文献

A new, endosperm-supported callus induetion method was developed using mesocotyls of mature wheat embryos. After seed germination under aseptic condition, most of the germ tissues were cut off and only a few mm of the mesocotyl tissue with the scutellum was used for callus induction. The seeds were placed furrow downwards in 2,4-D solution (6–8 mg l-1). Proliferating callus tissues were already observed on the cut surface of the mesocotyls on the 2nd day after inoculation. On the MS nutrient medium, callus formation from the isolated scutella with attached mesocotyls was negligible even after 6 days. For shoot and root regeneration, the calli produced up to 10 days were removed from the seeds and transferred onto a hormone-free MS medium. As shown by histological methods, the plantlets regenerated via organogenesis.  相似文献
