A “long‐backed” scenario of hominin vertebral evolution posits that early hominins possessed six lumbar vertebrae coupled with a high frequency of four sacral vertebrae (7:12‐13:6:4), a configuration acquired from a hominin‐panin last common ancestor (PLCA) having a vertebral formula of 7:13:6‐7:4. One founding line of evidence for this hypothesis is the recent assertion that the “Lucy” sacrum (A.L. 288‐1an, Australopithecus afarensis) consists of four sacral vertebrae and a partially‐fused first coccygeal vertebra (Co1), rather than five sacral vertebrae as in modern humans. This study reassesses the number of sacral vertebrae in Lucy by reexamining the distal end of A.L.288‐1an in the context of a comparative sample of modern human sacra and Co1 vertebrae, and the sacrum of A. sediba (MH2). Results demonstrate that, similar to S5 in modern humans and A. sediba, the last vertebra in A.L. 288‐1an exhibits inferiorly‐projecting (right side) cornua and a kidney‐shaped inferior body articular surface. This morphology is inconsistent with that of fused or isolated Co1 vertebrae in humans, which either lack cornua or possess only superiorly‐projecting cornua, and have more circularly‐shaped inferior body articular surfaces. The level at which the hiatus' apex is located is also more compatible with typical five‐element modern human sacra and A. sediba than if only four sacral vertebrae are present. Our observations suggest that A.L. 288‐1 possessed five sacral vertebrae as in modern humans; thus, sacral number in “Lucy” does not indicate a directional change in vertebral count that can provide information on the PLCA ancestral condition. In an observational study on semi-free Barbary macaques it was investigated whether the phylogenetic roots of human laughter and smile can be traced back to the genus Macaca. On the basis of morphological similarity a ‘relaxed open-mouth display’ as the phylogenetic precursor of the laughter, and a ‘silent bared-teeth display’ as the possible ancestor of the smile can be distinguished in the repertory of the Barbary macaque. Behavioural sequences from focal animal protocols were analyzed in order to establish message and meaning of both displays. Relaxed open-mouth display is regularly observed in the play interactions of juveniles. It is associated with partner-directed behaviour, it is frequently answered by a relaxed open-mouth display of the receiver, and accompanied by a special vocalization. Although up to 50% of the juvenile's play partners were higher ranking than themselves voluntary participation was the rule. Most characteristically, the behaviour patterns shown by both play partners are highly symmetrical and synchronized. Silent bared-teeth display is typically accompanied by evasive or submissive body movements, and occurs primarily in dyadic interactions, mainly by the lower ranking individual. It is not an unidirectional sign of a linear dominance hierarchy, though. Silent bared-teeth display is a frequent answer to aggressive behaviour shown by the receiver. After its performance, an increase of body contact between sender and receiver was observed. Behavioural sequences of senders and receivers are complementary, but lose their asymmetry after occurrence of the display. It is concluded that these results further support Van Hooff 's (1972) view that human laughter and smile have different phylogenetic roots: while silent bared-teeth display is a signal of submission and appeasement, relaxed open-mouth display is rightly called the ‘play face’, and is an expression of fun.  相似文献

Marmosets (Callithrix, Cebuella) in the wild gouge wells in trees and eat the exudates that accumulate there. An artificial gum-tree was made of wooden dowel and filled with Acacia Senegal exudate (gum arabic) dissolved in water. Three families of marmosets avidly gouged and consumed gum from this device, showing all of the behavioral patterns described in nature. The gum-tree cost little and was easy to make.  相似文献

This study aims at demonstrating that the Bathynellacea arose by neoteny from a zoea-like ancestor (“Zoea Theory”). Bathynellacea basically have a larval morphology. Their post-embryonic development passes through phases which are directly comparable with some in the development of primitive Eucarida. These phases are called the parazoeal and bathynellid phase, and correspond to the protozoeal and zoeal phase of Penaeidea, respectively. Running initially parallel to that of Penaeidea, the development of the Bathynellacea breaks off precociously. They reach sexual maturity at a stage which, in the Penaeidea, is followed by metamorphosis. There are reasons to assume that the development of all Syncarida originally passed through a series of free-living larval stages and underwent metamorphosis. The bathynellaceans reach adulthood at a stage which corresponds to the last larval stage of their ancestor. The ecological path to interstitial life of the Bathynellacea and the bearing of the “Zoea Theory” upon views as to their phylogenetic position are discussed. The classical example of a group of crustaceans thought to have arisen by neoteny, the Cladocera, is critically examined and found to be in need of reevaluation.  相似文献

This paper deals with a detailed study of Sphenophyllum miravallis Vetter, a member of the “Sphenophyllum thonii group”. New material from the Reisbach colliery, working the “Illinger Flözzone” of the “Heusweiler Schichten” (Lower Stephanian, Saar Basin, German Federal Republic), is described morphologically and anatomically, and the species is discussed. The new material enlarges the known range of variability of the normal aspect of the foliage, i.e. the foliage of the thinner branches. Thicker stems with their aberrant polymorphous foliage, and cellular details, are described for the first time. An emended diagnosis is given. Comparisons with other species are made.

The new species Bowmanites cupulatus is introduced to accommodate fructufications most probably belonging to Sphenophyllum miravallis.

S. crenulatum Knight ex Wagner is considered to be a heterotypic synonym of S. miravallis, the latter name having priority.  相似文献

The reconstruction of the evolutionary history of animal phyla was an integral part of Othenio Abel’s paleobiology (paleozoology). Abel took issue with those phylogeneticists who, following the lead of Haeckel, would draw up phylogenetic trees on the basis of transformation series of singular characters considered to be of particular importance. Abel highlighted Louis Dollo’s principle of the chevauchement des spécialisations (crossing of specializations), which transformed phylogenetics from a search for ancestor–descendant sequences to research into relative degrees of relationships. This replacement resolved the conflict, much discussed at the time, between the continuity of ancestor–descendant lineages and the discontinuity inherent in the natural (phylogenetic) system. Walter Zimmermann refined Abel’s methodology, which he called character‐phylogenetics (Merkmalsphylogenie), an approach that was eventually adopted by Willi Hennig.  相似文献

Oogenesis of the fresh-water triclad Dugesia dorotocephala has been studied by electron microscopical methods, with particular regard to the genesis and composition of the so-called “Balbiani body.” Its origin is clearly recognizable in young oocytes where the few mitochondria present seem to gather at the level of the perinuclear ooplasm. Here they surround dense masses of finely granular, fibrillar material probably coming from the nucleus. During the previtelloge ic period, mitochondria rapidly increase in number while the dense masses progressively dissolve. In the vitellogenic oocytes the Balbiani body shows its final configuration: it appears as a large area (up to 15-20 pm in diameter) consisting of innumerable densely packed mitochondria, some smooth vesicles and free ribosomes. This aggregate of cytoplasmic organelles remains unmodified in the mature oocytes. The function of the “Balbiani body” of D. dorotocephala is as yet unclear; it can only be asserted that it is not correlated with yolk production in which the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi complex are involved.  相似文献

The calanoid copepod genus Pleuromamma is easily distinguished from all other copepods by the presence of a rounded, dark-red cuticular structure ( = pigment knob) that protrudes from the left or right side of the second thoracic segment in both sexes. The present study of the pigment knob reveals a complex ultrastructure consisting of various cell types within three distinct areas that are bathed by hemolymph from the lateral sinus. The knob is covered by a greatly expanded cuticle through which a pore passes. The pore appears to connect with a centrally positioned pigment cell containing a large mass of darkly staining granules. This suggests that the knob may have a secretory function. Observations of live animals and dissected pigment knobs, however, indicates that the knob does not secrete a luminescent material nor does it luminesce internally.  相似文献
