Youngomyia matogrossensis Proença & Maia a new species of Cecidomyiidae (Insecta: Diptera) that induces cylindrical hairy galls on leaves of Pouteria torta (Mart.) Radlk. (Sapotaceae) is herein described and illustrated (larvae, pupal exuviae, male and female). The galler, gall and host plant were collected at Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães, in the state of Mato Grosso (Brazil). New morphological data and photographs of pupal exuviae, male and female of Youngomyia pouteriae Maia, 2001 are also provided.  相似文献

A new genus of orthocladiine Chironomidae, Botryocladius (type species B. grapeth sp.n. from eastern Australia) is described and illustrated in all life history stages. All thirteen included species are described as new, six from eastern Australia (B. grapeth, B. brindabella, B. mdfrc, B. collessi, B. tasmania, B. australoalpinus), two from Western Australia (B. bibulmun and B. freemani), one from ephemeral streams in Australia (B. petrophilus) and four from Patagonian Argentina and Chile (B. edwardsi, B. glacialis, B. mapuche and B. tronador). All Australian species are known from at least pupal exuviae, most from adult males and several from larvae. In contrast, only B. edwardsi amongst Neotropical species is known from the adult male; all others are described from pupal exuviae. The immature stages are lotic in Australian permanent and temporary streams and Patagonian glacial streams and rivers, and lentic in Neotropical glacial-fed and Australian subalpine lakes. Botryocladius appears to belong with a grouping centred on two formally undescribed taxa from Australia. The genus evidently demonstrates a vicariant distribution with at least two sister-group relationships between South American and Australian taxa, providing a minimum dating for the clade of 38 Ma., with apparent absence from New Zealand indicating a maximum date of 80 Ma.  相似文献

Based on larvae, pupae and adults of Australian and New Zealand Orthocladiinae (Chironomidae) midges, a genus new to science, Anzacladius , is described. Two species, A. numbat Cranston sp. n. and A. kangaroo Cranston sp. n., are described from temperate Australia (both western and south-eastern). A. kiwi Cranston sp. n. is described from both North and South Islands, New Zealand: association of the pharate pupa with its putative larva used sequence similarity of the CO1 ( cytochrome oxidase 1 ) gene. Pupal exuviae, the major stage for species recognition, show the genus occurs in running waters, especially in Australian acidic and sandy-bedded creeks, and Anzacladius species are found also in perched lakes of Queensland's Cooloolla region and Fraser Island. Previous morphological phylogenetic studies (under the code 'SO3') indicate a relationship to austral genera Botryocladius Cranston & Edward, Naonella Boothroyd and Echinocladius Cranston.  相似文献

Developmental patterns of low-temperature tolerance and glycerol production were determined for larval, pupal and adult stages of the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Both diapause and non-diapause-destined flies were reared at relatively high temperatures, 20° or 25°C, prior to testing. Cold tolerance was greatest for diapause pupae aged 12–35 days after pupariation. Among non-diapause-destined flies, pupae exhibited a greater level of low temperature tolerance than larvae or adults. Although diapause pupae were more tolerant than non-diapause pupae maximal cold tolerance was not attained in either group until 10 days after pupariation. Non-diapause-destined feeding and wandering larvae had higher glycerol levels than larvae destined for diapause. During the first 6 weeks after pupariation glycerol titres increased steadily in diapause pupae. Rapid loss of glycerol is associated with the termination of pupal diapause.  相似文献

New data on the larval and pupal morphology and the life history of limoniid flies (G. lugubris (Zett.), G. acheron Al., and G. viridipennis (Gimmerthal)) of the genus Gnophomyia are presented. Pupae of the painted lady butterfly Vanessa cardui exhibit pupal color polyphenism consisting of white, dark and intermediate types. We investigated environmental factors affecting pupal coloration and the physiological mechanisms underlying the control of pupal color polyphenism in this species. Over 80% of larvae reared at 16 °C developed into pupae of dark types, whereas over 82% of larvae at 32 °C developed into pupae of white types irrespective of long/short-day photoperiod conditions. When mature larvae reared at 32 °C were ligatured between thoracic and abdominal parts at three different pharate pupal stages, all of the head-thoracic parts developed into white pupae regardless of pupal stage, but all abdominal parts ligatured at the early pharate pupal stage only developed into dark pupae. These results indicate that temperature during larval stages is an important element affecting pupal coloration as an environmental cue in V. cardui, and that a factor(s) inducing white pupae is released from head-thoracic parts under conditions of high temperature. Additionally, when ligatured abdomens destined to develop into dark pupae were treated with crude extracts prepared from the central nervous system, all of the ligatured abdomens developed into white pupae at a level dependent on dose and pupal stage. These results suggest that the factor inducing white pupae is a key molecule controlling pupal color polyphenism in V. cardui.  相似文献

Species abundances of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) have often been excluded from studies of benthic river communities because of difficulties associated with sampling and identifying larvae. Chironomid pupal exuviae are easier to collect and identify and could be used to determine community structure if shown to be representative of local larval assemblages. Larvae were sampled along a 20 m chain secured over mid-channel gravels, upstream of two collection points for pupal exuviae. Proportional taxa abundances of pupal exuviae and larvae sampled from 130 m of stream were directly compared by a 2 test of independence and also separately fitted to four models of species abundance distribution. Observed proportions of taxa were not independent of the life stage sampled. The greatest discrepancies occurred with species of pupal exuviae that were absent as larvae from the gravel. The log series model provided the best fit with both pupal and larval data. Collections of pupal exuviae had greater species richness and evenness than samples of larvae. This was considered to be a consequence of sampling larvae from the gravel habitat alone.  相似文献

This study describes and illustrates the larvae and pupae of two North American darkling beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) in the subfamily Stenochiinae, Glyptotus cribratus LeConte from the southeastern United States, and Cibdelis blaschkei Mannerheim from California. Both species inhabit forested regions where adults and larvae occur in soft rotten dry wood of dead branches on living trees or in sections recently fallen from them. Species identity was confirmed by rearing of adults and pupae and the discovery of both in pupal cells with associated exuvia. Specimen label data and notes on habitats are provided. Antipredator defense structures and behaviour are noted for larvae and pupae of both species.  相似文献

Exposure of early fourth-instar larvae of Aedes aegypti to the juvenile hormone analogue Altosid ZR15® (methoprene) significantly increased the concentration of carbohydrates in the haemolymph of late fourth-instar larvae and reduced the haemolymph carbohydrate concentration of 24-h-old pupae relative to controls. Such treatment also effected a decline in haemolymph amino nitrogen levels of the pupal stage and a depletion of haemolymph proteins in late fourth-instar larvae as well as pupae. Two of nine protein fractions in the haemolymph of larvae were significantly depleted following methoprene treatment. Fourteen soluble protein fractions were present in the haemolymph of control pupae; two of these were missing from the pupae which were treated as larvae with methoprene. A further protein fraction, common to the haemolymph of both treated and control pupae, was significantly reduced in concentration as a consequence of exposure to methoprene. The juvenile hormone analogue impaired the capacity of the fat bodies of late fourth-instar larvae and pupae to synthesise proteins, resulting in a lowered concentration of fat body proteins. Glycogen levels in the fat bodies of treated larvae were significantly lower than in controls and glycogenolysis was suppressed due to an overall depletion of glycogen phosphorylase and, in pupae, a lowered ratio of active: inactive enzyme. The data are consistent with the proposition that the juvenile hormone analogue elicits neuroendocrinological changes in the target insect.  相似文献

Host-pathogen relationships were studied between the pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella, and a cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV). Results showed that the median effective dose (ED50), the dose that infects half the test subjects, was 1.91 × 102 polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIB)/ml of diet. The median lethal dose (LD50) was 1.72 × 105 PIB/ml. Diagnosis for CPV infection was more reliable in adult pink bollworms than in late-instar larvae. Duration of the larval stage increased with viral dose, but duration of the pupal stage was not affected by CPV. Weights of infected male and female pupae were 23.7 and 24.0% less than those of untreated pupae, respectively. Pupal weights were not significantly influenced by increases in the viral dose. Weights of larvae of a given age decreased as dose increased. The effect of CPV on duration of the immature stages and on pupal weight was not significantly influenced by rearing temperatures between 25.0° and 32.5°C. Pupal weight of infected pink bollworms decreased as the duration of the larval stage increased.  相似文献

Larval mortality with growth and pupation rates of Himalopsyche acharai were compared between standing and flowing water in a laboratory from June to November 2004. In flowing water, 90% of larvae started pupal case building and 81.5% of them developed to pupae by October. In standing water, 92.6% died before pupation. The larvae reared in flowing water grew significantly faster than those in standing water. These results show why Himalopsyche acharai does not inhabit pools and slowly flowing streams.  相似文献

Three argasid tick larvae were collected on April 2, 2010, from a common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, captured in the Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar (26°09?? S, 70°41?? W), Region of Atacama, Chile. The larvae were diagnosed as Ornithodoros, and further comparative analysis showed them to be Ornithodoros peruvianus Kohls, Clifford & Jones or a species close to it. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S mitochondrial rRNA gene sequences of Ornithodoros species plus four Argas species was carried out to clarify the taxonomic position of the larvae. This is the first finding of ticks parasitizing D. rotundus in Chile.  相似文献

We investigated whether diapause pupae of Byasa alcinous exhibit pupal color diphenism (or polyphenism) similar to the diapause pupal color polyphenism shown by Papilio xuthus. All diapause pupae of B. alcinous observed in the field during winter showed pupal coloration of a dark-brown type. When larvae were reared and allowed to reach pupation under short-day conditions at 18 °C under a 60 ± 5% relative humidity, diapause pupae exhibited pupal color types of brown (33%), light-brown (25%), yellowish-brown (21%), diapause light-yellow (14%) and diapause yellow (7%). When mature larvae reared at 18 °C were transferred and allowed to reach pupation at 10 °C and 25 °C under a 60 ± 5% relative humidity after a gut purge, the developmental ratio of brown and light-brown, yellowish-brown, and diapause light-yellow and diapause yellow types was 91.2, 8.8 and 0.0% at 10 °C, and 12.2, 48.8 and 39.0% at 25 °C, respectively. On the other hand, when mature larvae reared at 18 °C were transferred and allowed to reach pupation at 10 °C, 18 °C and 25 °C under an over 90% relative humidity after a gut purge, the developmental ratio of brown and light-brown, yellowish-brown, and diapause light-yellow and diapause yellow types was 79.8, 16.9 and 3.3% at 10 °C, 14.5, 26.9 and 58.6% at 18 °C, and 8.3, 21.2 and 70.5% at 25 °C, respectively. These results indicate that diapause pupae of brown types are induced by lower temperature and humidity conditions, whereas yellow types are induced by higher temperature and humidity conditions. The findings of this study show that diapause pupae of B. alcinous exhibit pupal color diphenism comprising brown and diapause yellow types, and suggest that temperature and humidity experienced after a gut purge are the main factors that affect the diapause pupal coloration of B. alcinous as environmental cues.  相似文献

Last-instar larvae of the western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens, were subjected to Beauveria bassiana GHA incorporated into sterile sand and non-sterile orchard soil. Mycosis in the pupal stage was observed in >20% of buried R. indifferens pupae and >80% of larvae entering sand treated with either of two B. bassiana isolates. When pre-pupal larvae burrowed into conidium-treated non-sterile cherry orchard soil, the incidence of mycosis, on both the puparia and internally developing pupae, increased with dose. Internal pupal tissues were found to contain B. bassiana. Increasing the soil moisture level from 20% to 35% water holding capacity did not have an effect on the percentage of mycosed pupae. This is the first evidence that the preimaginal stages of R. indifferens are susceptible to infection by B. bassiana.  相似文献

Topical application of fenoxycarb (1 μg per animal) at 129 or 132 h of the fifth instar larvae of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, did not induce morphological abnormalities in the pupal stage, but these animals became dauer (permanent) pupae. This condition of B. mori and the endocrine events leading to permanent pupae are discussed in this work. Application of fenoxycarb at 132 h of the fifth instar elicited a high ecdysteroid titre in the pharate pupal stage and a steadily high ecdysteroid titre in the pupal stage. The fenoxycarb-induced permanent pupae had non-degenerating prothoracic glands that secreted low amounts of ecdysteroid and did not respond to recombinant prothoracicotropic hormone (rPTTH) late in the pupal stage. The Bombyx PTTH titre in the haemolymph, determined by a time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay, was lower than that of controls at the time of pupal ecdysis, but higher than controls later in the pupal stage in fenoxycarb-treated animals. After application of fenoxycarb, its haemolymph level, measured by ELISA, reached a peak at pupal ecdysis, then remained low. These results suggest that the fenoxycarb-mediated induction of permanent pupae is only partially a brain-centred phenomenon. It also involves alterations in the hormonal interplay that govern both the initiation of pupal-adult differentiation and changes in the steroidogenic pathway of the prothoracic glands of B. mori.  相似文献

The freshwater anomuran crabs of the family Aeglidae are all restricted to southern South America occurring in Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina. The family consists of a single genus, Aegla, containing 63 currently described species. There are another 5–10 known yet undescribed species to complement this diversity. The aeglids occur in freshwater lakes, streams, rivers, and in caves with freshwater. The origin of the family appears to be from marine ancestors from the Pacific invading streams in Chile about 75 mya radiating both in Chile and again on the eastern side of the Andes, particularly in Brazil. Sphyracephala detrahens (Walker, 1860) (Diptera: Diopsidae) inhabits the riparian zones of streams and rivers. Because of the limited dispersal ability of S. detrahens during egg, larval, and pupal stages, immature individuals are at risk of being submerged by floodwater after heavy rain. In this study, I evaluated the submergence tolerances of immatures of S. detrahens by comparing them to immatures of Drosophila melanogaster, which also feed on rotten fruits but are not restricted to the riparian zone. The results showed that S. detrahens eggs were susceptible to desiccation, but more than 80% of eggs hatched after full submergence. Later instar larvae were more resistant to full submergence than earlier instar larvae. The duration of submergence causing 50% pupation (PD50) in the first, second, and third-instar larvae of S. detrahens were 15.88, 58.46, and 91.74 h, respectively. The PD50 of the third-instar larvae of D. melanogaster was 20.01 h. Third-instar S. detrahens larvae continued to develop in water for a longer duration than D. melanogaster larvae of the same instar. In the pupal stages, late pupae tended to remain afloat longer than early pupae. The duration of submergence causing 50% emergence (ED50) of adults from early and late pupae were 40.70 and 104.74 h, respectively. In the larval and pupal stages, individuals in the later developmental phases tended to be more tolerant to full submergence. The submergence tolerance of the immature stages of S. detrahens may reflect adaptation to an environment with fluctuating water levels.  相似文献

Two genera of chironomine Chironomidae are reported: Anuncotendipes , gen. n., type species Anuncotendipes australotropicus sp. n. and included Anuncotendipes kakadu sp. n., and Nandeva Wiedenbrug, Reiss and Fittkau as new to Australia for the species Nandeva fittkaui sp. n. The pupa and adults are known for each genus, but the larvae only for Anuncotendipes . The female of Nandeva is described for the first time. Pupal exuviae of both genera occur in smaller streams in the wet tropics of Far North Queensland, and A. kakadu is lotic in the Northern Territory. Phylogenetic analysis of the subfamily Chironominae at generic level suggests that Anuncotendipes is a sister genus to Rheomus in the Harnischia -complex of genera. Nandeva shows convergent resemblance to the tribe Tanytarsini, but more likely belongs to an austral radiation of Chironomini including Nilodosis Keiffer, Fissimentum Cranston and Nolte and Imparipecten Freeman. These genera show tropical Gondwanan tracks linking Australia with the Afrotropics and Neotropics.  相似文献
