Two plant essential oils; camphor and castor were tested for insecticidal and antifeedant activity against the 4th instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis, a serious pest on cotton in Egypt. Also the impact of LC10 of both oils on some physiological parameters in larvae was studied by using leaf dipping technique. Analysis of both oils using GC–MS revealed several insecticidal and antifeedant compounds. Our results showed higher insecticidal activity and antifeedant index of camphor oil against S. littoralis. The LC50 and the antifeedant indices were 163.1, 246.8?mg/ml and 12.69, 6.62% for camphor and castor bean oil, respectively. The total hemocyte count (THC) and differential hemocyte count (DHC) were reduced significantly after 48?h of treatment compared to controls. Both oils reduced all types of hemocytes except plasmatocytes which were reduced only by castor oil. Camphor oil decreased total proteins and carbohydrates while castor oil targeted only carbohydrate content. Both oils didn't affect the amount of total lipids. Lipase, α-amylase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme activities were increased significantly in larvae treated with camphor oil than other treatments. These results clearly indicate that castor and camphor oils can affect the nutritional status in S. littoralis larvae, thereby changing the internal metabolic processes in the larvae which make them as potential control agents in IPM programs against S. littoralis.  相似文献

Cannibalism in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (FAW), is a limiting factor in a baculovirus production system. To detect the impact of cannibalism, a two-step bioassay was conducted with different larval ages of FAW fed on two food sources (corn and castor bean leaves) contaminated with the S. frugiperda multiple-embedded nucleopolyhedrovirus. In a first bioassay, the food source affected the cannibalism, being higher for all larval ages tested (5-, 6- and 7-day-old larvae) in larvae fed on corn than on those fed on castor bean leaves. Larval mortality, weight equivalent and larval equivalents (LEs) per hectare decreased as the larval age increased. Larval weight, occlusion bodies (OBs)/larva and total OBs increased when the larval age increased. In a second bioassay, in which only 6- and 7-day-old larvae were used because of the performance in the first bioassay, the cannibalism rates were affected by the interaction between food sources and time of feeding (48 and 72 h), reaching the highest values for 6- and 7-day-old larvae fed on corn leaves for 72 h. Mortality of the FAW was affected by the interaction between food sources, larval age and time of feeding. The lowest mortalities were on 7-day-old larvae when they were fed on castor bean leaves for 48 and 72 h. Larval weight, OBs/larva, total OBs and LEs were affected by the interaction between food sources and larval age. A significant correlation was observed between larval weight and OBs/larva that fed on both food sources, suggesting that larval weight can be used to achieve a concentration to be sprayed in 1 ha.  相似文献

Plant extracts represent a great source of molecules, with insecticidal activity, which are used for pest control in several crop production systems. This work aimed to evaluate the toxicity of an aqueous extract of leaves of castor bean against larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in search for different classes of molecules with insecticidal activities by using in vitro assays. The effects of the castor bean leaf extract on the food utilization, development, and survival of S. frugiperda larvae was evaluated by feeding the larvae an artificial diet supplemented with different concentrations of the extract (0%, 1%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10% w/v). The effects observed were dose-dependent, and the highest concentration evaluated (10% w/v) was the one the most affected food utilization by altering the nutritional indices, as well as larval weight gain, development time, and survivorship. In vitro assays to detect saponins, lectins, and trypsin inhibitors in the castor bean leaf extract were performed, but only trypsin inhibitors were detected. No preference for the diet source was detected in S. frugiperda by feeding the larvae in choice experiments with diets containing different concentrations of the castor bean extract tested. The data obtained indicate the existence of a potential molecule in the tested extract of castor bean to be used as an alternative insecticide to be integrated in the management of S. frugiperda.  相似文献

Plants have evolved a diverse array of defensive mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stresses, which can be either constitutive or inducible. Variation in plant-intrinsic factors such as the genotype and the leaf position coupled with insect herbivory can affect the expression of resistance to insects. We investigated if soybean defense induction triggered by Spodoptera cosmioides herbivory varies in function of the genotype and leaf position. This hypothesis was tested in two bioassays using leaf discs or entire leaflets collected from the upper and lower trifoliates of S. cosmioides-injured and uninjured V3-V4 soybean plants. We used one genotype that was constitutively resistant and one that was constitutively susceptible to S. cosmioides based on previous screening. Third-instar larvae were fed one of the treatments and assayed for leaf consumption, larval growth, and efficiency of conversion of ingested food. Genotype and leaf position significantly interacted with herbivory and affected soybean-induced resistance to S. cosmioides. Negative responses on S. cosmioides larvae consumption and growth rates were only observed when leaf material was originated from the upper soybean trifoliate. The susceptible soybean genotype did not exhibit induced resistance characteristics. Food offered as leaf disc was better at demonstrating induced resistance in previously injured soybean, whereas offering entire leaflet the induced effects were less pronounced. Here we provide new findings on soybean resistance by demonstrating that resistance induction to S. cosmioides herbivory is dependent on the plant genotype and leaf position where injury took place, with negative effects better evinced in bioassays using leaf discs than entire leaflets.  相似文献

Various foods associated with cassava were tested for their effect on the development, fecundity and longevity of Euseius fustis, the most common phytoseiid species found on cassava in Africa. Euseius fustis developed successfully to adulthood on the spider mite prey species Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) and Oligonychus gossypii (Zacher) and on pollen from maize, castor bean and cassava. Euseius fustis also completed development on water-diluted phloem exudate from cassava, diluted honeydew from the cassava mealybug and on various pollen and prey combinations. When reared on Tetranychus urticae Koch prey or free water only, E. fustis did not develop past the deutonymphal stage. All larvae held on clean leaf discs on water-soaked cotton died without moulting, suggesting that E. fustis must feed in order to moult to the nymphal stages. Diets of maize plus castor bean pollen and maize pollen plus M. tanajoa resulted in the highest rate of development, the highest fecundity and the greatest longevity. Castor bean pollen alone and maize pollen alone produced a higher fecundity and greater longevity than M. tanajoa tested alone. A colony of E. fustis reared continuously for seven generations on castor bean pollen produced nine times more adult females than a colony of E. fustis reared continuously on M. tanajoa. No negative effects on the development and fecundity of E. fustis were observed after seven generations were reared on pollen.  相似文献

Summary Hyalophora cecropia larvae were reared on leaves of wild cherry,Prunus serotina, which contained variable amounts of leaf water but otherwise did not differ in fiber, total nitrogen, and caloric content. Larvae which were fed leaves low in leaf water grew more slowly and were less efficient at utilizing plant biomass, energy, and nitrogen than those larvae fed leaves which were fully supplemented with water.Experiments were performed using excised leaves under different regimes of relative humidity and leaf water supplementation in climatic control chambers maintained at identical temperatures and photoperiod. Foodplant biomass utilization efficiencies were severely reduced by decreasing amounts of leaf water. Growth rates were halved and the efficiency of conversion of assimilated dry matter into larval biomass was reduced from 82% in the treatment with fully supplemented leaves to 34% in the driest treatment. The nitrogen utilization efficiency (N.U.E.) was reduced from 75–80% to 48%, and the relative accumulation rate of nitrogen (N.A.R.) was suppressed nearly 2-fold for larvae on low-water leaves. Relative maintenance costs (calories expended in respiration/mg tissue/day) of larvae were nearly five times higher on dry leaves than on fully supplemented leaves. Larvae on leaves which were low in water content were themselves more desiccated, and metabolized greater portions of assimilated energy, perhaps in an attempt to supplement body water with metabolic water derived from respiration.The larval rates of consumption of biomass, energy, and nitrogen were the same for all treatments, indicating that leaf water affected larval growth primarily by restricting the efficiency of utilizing these nutrients. Where water was limiting (as in tree leaves), an increased consumption rate did not appear to be a successful means of increasing growth rates. There were daily and seasonal differences in leaf water content between different trees of the same species. Although absolute differences in leaf water exist between different trees and between young and old (fully expanded) leaves of a single tree, these differences are proportional and parallel each other through daily and seasonal cycles.In spite of evolutionary adaptations of herbivores to acquire adequate water and avoid desiccation, the leaf water content naturally encountered by cecropia larvae on cherry leaves may limit their growth, especially if the R.H. is low.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that Lima bean Phaseolus lunatus L. (Henderson cultivar) trichome density affects the survival of the acariphagous lady beetle Stethorus punctillum Weise. When isolated throughout larval development, 10% or less of S. punctillum larvae reared on two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch on small (rather than large) P. lunatus leaves survived until pupation. Although other factors might have contributed to larval mortality, we demonstrated that survival rate was related to trichome density (i.e., number of hooked trichomes per cm on the underside of leaves). Trichome density was greatest on the underside of small leaves and least on large leaves, indicating that survival rate increased as trichome density decreased. Hooked trichomes impaled S. punctillum larvae more often at the apex of the abdomen than at any other body part. Hooked trichomes also trapped S. punctillum adults, but they always managed to free themselves. This study highlights the negative effect of Lima bean hooked trichomes on a predacious lady beetle that attacks the two-spotted spider mite.  相似文献

The strong invasive freshwater mysid Limnomysis benedeni, a detritivorous–herbivorous feeder, has a preference for small food particles, but also feeds on leaf litter. Here, we tested whether leaf litter consumption by L. benedeni depends on the tree species and leaf conditioning (two types of physical and biological leaf conditioning). At the physical leaf conditioning, L. benedeni was fed with shortly leached or extensively leached leaves of five tree species in laboratory food assays. The mysid consumed shortly leached leaves of Copper Beech, Lombardy Poplar, Common Oak, and especially White Willow, and did not feed on shortly leached Black Alder leaves. The consumption of extensively leached leaves by L. benedeni did not depend on the tree species. Overall, 74% of the variation of the leaf consumption by L. benedeni was explained by the significant interaction of the factors carbon content and polyphenol content of the leaves, caused the feeding strategy of L. benedeni. For the biological leaf conditioning, the mysids consumed to a high degree naturally conditioned leaves, followed by leaves colonized by one of three fungi, but oomycete-colonized leaf litter and autoclaved leaves were consumed at similar low levels. Our results indicate that L. benedeni feeds on different types of conditioned leaves to different extents, and therefore may affect leaf litter degradation in many invaded freshwaters.  相似文献

The development time, immature survivorship, immature size, tertiary sex ratio, pre-oviposition period, fecundity, and preferences of the castor whitefly, Trialeurodes ricini on four host plant species (castor, eggplant, cotton and green bean) were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Development time from egg to adult emergence was the longest on cotton (33.3 days), the shortest on green bean (25.4 days), and intermediate on eggplant (28.5 days) and castor (28.3 days). The survival rate was the highest on castor (92.5%), followed by those on green bean (80.2%) and eggplant (73.8%), and the lowest on cotton (42.6%). The sex ratio was the highest on cotton (♀:♂ = 2.45:1.00), the lowest on eggplant (♀:♂ = 0.75:1.00), and intermediate on castor and green bean (♀:♂ = 1.04:1.00). T. ricini immatures and adults were generally larger when reared on castor and eggplant than on other plants. The net reproduction rate (R0) was 57.656 females per female per generation, the generation time (T) was 35.9 days, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.1128 eggs per female per day, the gross reproduction rate (GRR) was 108.04 eggs per female per generation, the finite rate of increase (λ) was 1.1194 females per female per day, and the doubling time (DT) was 6.1149 days. In both no-choice and two-choice tests, T. ricini adults preferred castor for feeding and oviposition.  相似文献

This study investigated the long-term effects of total and partial replacement of dietary fish meal (FM) by a mixture of agricultural products on sperm quality of African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were formulated containing graded levels of either 50% FM and maize meal (diet 1); 25% FM mixed with crude sunflower oil cake (SFOC) and bean meal (BM) (diet 2); 12.5% FM mixed with sunflower oil cake, BM and ground nut oil cake (GOC) (diet 3) and 0% FM mixed with de-hulled sunflower oil cake (SFOCD), BM and ground nut oil cake (diet 4). Gonadosomatic index (GSI), sperm quality, plasma sex steroids (11-keto testosterone [11-KT]; testosterone [T]; estradiol-17beta [E2]) were evaluated on 10 to 24 fish fed on each diet. Sperm quality was assessed using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Total replacement of fish meal by plant products markedly increased sperm volume, spermatocrit, spermatozoa integrity, and sperm motility. Fish fed diet 3 (12.5% fish meal) provided intermediate results on sperm quality whereas the lowest values were obtained in fish fed diets 1 and 2. In fish fed 0% fish meal (diet 4), androgen levels were higher and estrogen levels were lower than in fish fed fish meal diets. Based on dietary lipid and fatty acid analyses, these results suggest a positive impact of short chain n-6 fatty acids on androgen synthesis and sperm quality. In conclusion, a combination of ground nut oil cake, bean meal and sunflower oil cake (preferably when the sunflower is dehulled) in African catfish diet improves the sperm quality.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Mnesampela privata (Guenée) has a host list of 40 Eucalyptus and at least one Corymbia species. Larval survival and performance was studied on 19 species to investigate how certain leaf traits influence the suitability of different species. 2 After 7 days, survival on Eucalyptus aggregata and Eucalyptus camphora is greater than 70% even though the toughness of leaves is 0.15–0.19 mg/mm2. However, after the same time, survival on genotypes of Eucalyptus melliodora and Eucalyptus sideroxylon was less than 60%, or even 0%, even though the toughness of some leaves was as low as 0.11 mg/mm2. An unmeasured allelochemical, rather than toughness, may reduce survival on these species. 3 Dry weights of first‐instar larvae were negatively correlated with leaf toughness for 13 of the species studied. Species that produced the heaviest first‐instar larvae were not the same hosts that produced the heaviest second‐instar larvae. 4 Dry weights of female pupae were negatively correlated with total oil content for five of the species studied. 5 Larvae exhibit age‐related changes in feeding behaviour. Neonates skeletonize leaves (avoid leaf veins and oil glands) and post‐third‐instar larvae ingest whole leaf fragments (consume small leaf veins and oil glands). These findings suggest that neonates are sensitive to high leaf toughness and non‐oil plant secondary metabolites whereas older larvae are less sensitive to high leaf toughness and are likely to become larger adults on hosts with lower oil contents.  相似文献

Ethanolic extracts of larval frass of the cotton leaf worm and the black cutworm were prepared and tested to deter the eggs lay of the adults of the same insects. Two different types of food were used for larval feeding. Extracts fractions were identified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis. High concentrations were more deterrent to oviposition than low. Extracted frass of fed larvae on semi-artificial diet was more effective than others fed on natural host. Sensitivity of the black cutworm adult females to the cotton leaf worm frass extract was clearly observed at high tested concentration of L1–3 and L4 frass extracts which resulted completely oviposition deterrent. Several fatty acids were identified qualitatively and quantitatively in frass extracts of different larval instars of both target insects. Type and quantity of fatty acid depends mainly on larval food source and larval instar, except palmitic acid which recorded at all larval instars and food sources. Oleic acid and ethyl 9-hexadecaenoic acid were found when semi-artificial diet used as a food source while myrisitic acid was observed only in extracted frass of fed larvae on castor oil leaves.  相似文献

Little is known on the resistance of wheat cultivars to Sitobion avenae (F.) in Brazil. The goal of this work was to assess the behavior and biology of S. avenae on four commercial wheat cultivars to verify the existence of resistance by antibiosis in leaves and ears and non-preference in the ears. The smallest net fecundity rates of S. avenae in wheat leaves have been found in the cultivars Embrapa 22 and BRS264, which did not differ between themselves. The intrinsic rate of increase of S. avenae was smaller in leaves of Embrapa 22 than in cultivars BRS254 and BRS Timbaúva. The smallest net fecundity rates of S. avenae in wheat ears were observed in the cultivars BRS254 and Embrapa 22. The intrinsic rate of increase of the aphid in the ear of cultivar Embrapa 22 was smaller than in BRS Timbaúva and BRS264, but did not differ from BRS254. The organ of the wheat plant in which the aphid was reared influences antibiosis resistance, but the cultivar BRS Timbaúva was considered susceptible and Embrapa 22 resistant to S. avenae in both plant organs tested. Ears of wheat cultivars tested did not show differences in the mechanism of resistance by non-preference to S. avenae.  相似文献

The predatory mite Iphiseius degenerans (Berlese) is commercially available as a biological control agent of thrips and spider mites in greenhouse crops. Developmental duration and immature survival of I. degeneransreared on nine types of food (almond pollen, apple pollen, castor bean pollen, plum pollen, sweet pepper pollen, Tetranychus urticaeKoch, Frankliniella occidentalis(Pergande), Ephestia kuehniella Zeller eggs and Artemia franciscana Kellogg cysts) and on three substrates (Multicel, sweet pepper leaf, and bean leaf) were determined in the laboratory. All experiments were carried out at 25 °C. On Multicel, mean developmental times on pollen ranged from 6.0 to 7.1 days, with the lowest value recorded on almond pollen and the highest on sweet pepper pollen. When reared on castor bean pollen significantly longer developmental times were obtained on a sweet pepper leaf compared to a bean leaf or Multicel. Developmental duration when offered T. urticaeon Multicel ranged between 6.1 and 6.9 days, on a bean leaf development was completed in 8.0 days. The longest developmental times on Multicel were recorded on Ephestia eggs (7.0 days) and on decapsulated Artemia cysts (7.5 days). No development beyond the protonymphal stage occurred in the absence of food or when encapsulated Artemia cysts or thrips larvae were offered on Multicel. On a sweet pepper leaf and a bean leaf, respectively 6.7 and 10.0% of the eggs reached adulthood when thrips larvae were provided as food; developmental times recorded here, were 9.0 and 8.3 days. Overall, immature mortality occurred mainly in the protonymphal stage and ranged from 0.0 to 36.7%. In conclusion, I. degenerans is able to feed on a variety of natural and unnatural foods, but thrips larvae and sweet pepper pollen are unfavourable food for immature development. This could compromise the establishment of this biological control agent when used against thrips in sweet pepper crops.  相似文献

Culex mosquitoes feed on a wide range of nectars consisting of mostly carbohydrates and amino acids, however, little is known about the utilization and effects of these different carbohydrates and their accompanying amino acids on longevity. Culex quinquefasciatus larvae were reared on low- and high-quantity food diets to produce adults that were nutritionally representative of wild-caught and laboratory-reared mosquitoes. Emerging adults reared on low- or high-quantity food diets as larvae were then provided Lantana camara nectar mimics containing mixtures of carbohydrates and amino acids to evaluate effects of nectar amino acids on longevity. Carbohydrates (with or without amino acids) were a critical component of the adult diet, and in their absence, adult mosquitoes died within 3-5 days. The nectar mimic that contained both carbohydrates and amino acids did not increase adult longevity of males originating from either poorly or well-fed larvae. However, females receiving adult diets containing both carbohydrates and amino acids lived 5% longer than females fed adult diets with only sugar.  相似文献

Tung tree (Vernicia fordii) is a native and oil-producing woody plant in China. The oil is industrially important and promising biodiesel raw material. However, until recently the lack of effective protocols for the extraction of genomic DNA had made DNA-based molecular studies of tung tree difficult. Here, four conventional protocols and one novel protocol were compared for their capacity in isolating DNA from tung tree leaves of different age. Our results showed that all the four conventional protocols could isolate DNA from old leaves, two from matured leaves, but none from young leaves. However, the detectable DNA samples contained many contaminations, leading to overestimation of DNA concentration measured by ultraviolet spectrophotometer, also interfering with the downstream PCR reaction. The novel protocol could produce high-yield and good-quality DNA from tung tree leaves regardless of leaf age. Its key steps were that a single leaf tissue sample could be recycled for DNA extraction for up to four times, and correspondingly four DNA precipitations (termed as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th DNA sample, respectively) were conducted. All the four DNA samples of a single tissue were good template for PCR reaction. The novel protocol is an effective method for genomic DNA isolation of tung tree.  相似文献

The response of adult females of the predatory mite Typhlodromus kerkirae (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to volatiles emitted from bean leaves infested with Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) or from leaves of Oxalis corniculata infested with Petrobia harti (Acari: Tetranychidae) was studied in the laboratory using a Y-tube olfactometer. Typhlodromus kerkirae females reared from larvae through to adults on T. urticae and pollen of Vicia faba responded to volatiles of bean leaves infested with T. urticae, either when they had a choice between infested and non-infested bean leaves or between bean leaves infested with T. urticae and O. corniculata leaves infested with P. harti. However, they did not respond when they had been reared only on the carotenoid-deficient pollen of V. faba. Female T. kerkirae that had been reared from larva to the tenth day of adult life on T. urticae and subsequently fed for 1 week on V. faba pollen did not respond to volatiles of bean leaves infested with T. urticae. In contrast, those that had been reared on V. faba pollen to the tenth day of adult life and subsequently fed for 1 week on T. urticae responded to volatiles of infested bean leaves.  相似文献

Growth, survival, fecundity, and nutrition of Tirathaba rufivena (Walker) fed on two artificial and one natural diet were studied at 29±1°C and 75±5% relative humidity. Larvae reared on the two artificial diets showed faster growth and development, higher pupal survival and weight, and higher adult fecundity than those reared on a natural diet of young coconuts, Cocos nucifera L. The relative growth rate, efficiency of ingested food conversion, and efficiency of digested food conversion in larvae fed on artificial diets were significantly higher than those of larvae fed on young coconuts. The relative consumption rate of larvae fed on artificial diets was significantly lower than that of larvae fed on young coconuts. T. rufivena showed no significant degradation in ability to propagate after being reared on the artificial diet for five successive generations. These results indicated that two artificial diets are suitable for mass rearing of T. rufivena.  相似文献

Root and soil populations of Meloidogyne incognita were significantly fewer from marigold, castor bean, and chrysanthemum than from tomato roots and soil, but not from fallow soil. Root populations of Pratvlenchus alleni were significantly fewer from marigold, castor bean, and chrysanthemum than from tomato: marigold had the fewest. Root populations of M. incognita and P. alleni from tomato simultaneously cultivated with marigold, castor bean, and chrysanthemum were significantly fewer than from tomato cultivated alone. Aborted giant cells and dead M. incognita (larvae and females) were observed in roots of marigold and castor bean, but not in chrysanthemum or tomato. Significantly more males than females occurred in castor bean roots. lnfcction sites of P. alleni appeared normal in all hosts. Thin-layer and column chromatography of alcoholic extracts from castor bean revealed no nematicidal thiophenc derivatives.  相似文献
