The structure of the mid-summer planktonic rotifer communities of 101 Adirondack lakes ranging in pH from 4.0 to 7.3 were characterized in relation to acidity and selected water quality parameters. More than 70 rotifer species were identified from collections in 1982 and 1984. None of the species collected could be considered acidobiontic or alkalibiontic. Keratella taurocephala was the most commonly collected rotifer, occurring in 94 of the study lakes. It was abundant throughout the range of pH investigated but was particularly dominant in acidic waters, averaging > 85 % of the rotifers collected from waters of pH < 5.0.Rotifer community structure can be related to three groups of water quality parameters. Community parameters (richness and diversity) are most highly correlated with parameters indicative of acidity status. Rotifer abundance correlates with trophic state indicators, i.e. chlorophyll a and total phosphorus, over the full range of pH investigated. However, in acidic lakes, rotifer abundance is related to true color and DOC, indicators of humic influences.The rotifer communities of the Adirondacks can be classified into four broad types: 1) A diverse, productive community of the more alkaline lakes, generally with 13 species, and dominated by Conochilus unicornis, Kellicottia bostoniensis, Kellicottia longispina, and Polyarthra major; 2) Relatively diverse communities of productive, highly colored acid lakes, with 8 species, and often with very large populations (> 200 · 1–1) dominated by K. bostoniensis and K. taurocephala; 3) Depauperate (< 4 species) communities of clear water acid lakes with generally low density populations dominated by K. taurocephala (> 90 % of rotifers in each sample); and 4) Extremely depauperate (2–3 species) acid lake communities associated with small lakes with high flushing rates dominated by C. unicornis.  相似文献

Predation and food supply are generally perceived as important determinants of spatial and temporal variations of populations. The population dynamics of freshwater rotifers have been well researched in this aspect. However, their spatial variations have attracted less attention and have not been studied by simultaneously considering both predation and food supply. We studied spatial variations of rotifer abundance among 34 Canadian boreal lakes. A large part of the variance of rotifer abundance was associated with variables related to trophic status including chlorophyll a and total phosphorus. However, abundances of mesozooplankton such as potential predators and competitors did not correlate with rotifer abundance and did not explain the residual of the regression between rotifer abundance and chlorophyll a. The results of the present study indicated that variation in rotifer abundance among lakes was caused by bottom-up forces related to food supply and not by top-down predatory interactions. This provides a contrast to previous empiric and experimental studies that reported that temporal variations of rotifer abundance were mainly regulated by top-down interactions. This discrepancy suggests that overall differences in rotifer abundance among lakes are mainly determined by bottom-up forces while temporal changes in single lakes are shaped by top-down forces. Meanwhile, the composition of rotifer species was correlated with mesozooplankton abundance as well as trophic status. Rotifer species with long spines or rigid loricae were found in the lakes where mesozooplankton were abundant, which suggests that defensive morphology could have affected the rotifer species distribution among the study lakes.  相似文献

Few studies exist documenting changes in rotifer communities over long time intervals. Here, we explore seasonal and long-term variation in rotifer communities in four Polish lakes sampled in 1976 and again in 1997. Rarefied, asymptotic species richness did not differ significantly across study years, although values in 1997 tended to be higher. Simpson’s and Shannon–Wiener diversity measures provided inconsistent temporal results, with only the former indicating significantly higher richness in 1997. Sorensen’s coefficient of community similarity was as high among lakes in 1976 (0.81) and in 1997 (0.76) as within lakes across the 21-year span (0.77). Nonlinear redundancy analysis of species’ abundances revealed large, consistent seasonal changes across lakes, smaller consistent shifts between sampling periods, and small differences between lakes. Collectively, these metrics indicate that species composition was relatively stable among lakes within years and within lakes between years, while species’ abundance patterns were far more variable and most affected by season. The rotifer communities of 15 acidic – alkaline and soft – marginally hard water floodplain lakes of the lower Assam valley of the Brahmaputra river basin, characterized by low ionic concentrations, reveal 164 species (178 taxa) belonging to 39 genera and 20 families and represent the richest biodiversity known to date in these ecotones of the Indian subcontinent. Nine species are new to the Indian Rotifera. Cosmopolitan (59.7%) > pantropical (15.2%) > cosmotropical (12.2%) species dominate the taxocoenosis. Biogeographically interesting elements constitute a notable component (13.4%); important members of this category include six Oriental, two Australasian and seven Palaeotropical species. The examined fauna depicts a tropical character with predominance of Lecanespp. (28.0%). Littoral or periphytic rotifers (76.2%) dominate the planktonic species. Rotifers comprise a dominant qualitative (67–103, 79.1±11.0 species) and an important quantitative (mean: 41.1–65.9%) component of zooplankton in all floodplain lakes, register a moderate diversity (mean: 2.036–2.642), low dominance (mean: 0.019–0.216) and high evenness (mean: 0.840–0.893). The examined material indicates several interesting acidophilous elements. Richness depicts significant inverse correlation with pH. Water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity record significant direct relationships with the rotifer abundance. Diversity is influenced by abundance and is also directly correlated with water temperature and conductivity. Canonical analysis shows a notable cumulative impact of six abiotic factors on richness, density and diversity.  相似文献

Worldwide, there have been few comparative studies on rotifer communities in subtropical lakes. We studied changes in rotifer community structure over 1 year and its relationship to several physicochemical variables in five subtropical shallow lakes in East China, covering a nutrient gradient from mesotrophy to moderate eutrophy. In these lakes, the genera Brachionus, Lecane, and Trichocerca dominated the rotifer species composition, and Polyarthra dolichoptera, Keratella cochlearis, Filinia longiseta, T. pusilla, and Anuraeopsis fissa were the dominant species. With increased nutrient loading, total rotifer abundance and species dominance increased, indicating that rotifer abundance might be a more sensitive indicator of trophic state than species composition. Comparative analyses of the six rotifer community indices calculated in this study and redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the two slightly eutrophic lakes and the other two moderately eutrophic lakes exhibited a high degree similarity in community structure. This suggests that the trophic state of a lake determines the rotifer community structure. In contrast, in the two moderately eutrophic lakes, the mass ratios of TN:TP and the contents of TP suggested N-limitation and cyanobacteria dominance in phytoplankton communities might be possible. In these lakes TN played a more important role in shaping the rotifer community according to stepwise multiple regression and RDA. RDA analysis also suggested that rotifer species distribution was strongly associated with trophic state and water temperature, with water temperature being the most important factor in determining seasonality.  相似文献

2006年10月至2007年7月,调查了宁波市东钱湖(Ⅰ、Ⅱ站)、月湖(Ⅲ、Ⅳ站)和日湖(Ⅴ、Ⅵ站)三个游览性湖泊浮游轮虫的群落结构及其生物多样性。共发现浮游轮虫21种,以月湖轮虫的密度(3287ind.·L-1)和生物量(0.884mg·L-1)为最高,日湖轮虫的Margalef多样性指数0.917为最高,东钱湖轮虫的群落指标均最低。东钱湖轮虫优势种为暗小异尾轮虫(Trichocerca pusilla);月湖和日湖轮虫第一优势种均为针簇多肢轮虫(Polyarthra trigla)。浮游轮虫生物多样性指数随着水体碱性环境的加剧而呈极显著地下降(r=-0.545,n=24,p<0.01),月湖和日湖的浮游轮虫生物多样性指数也随轮虫密度的增加而极显著地下降(r=-0.668,n=16,p<0.01)。  相似文献

Rotifers were sampled at monthly intervals for a year at four monitoring stations in Rapel Reservoir (a hydroelectric impoundment) in Central Chile (34°02S; 71°35W). Fifteen species were identified, but only Keratella cochlearis was consistently found at each station, it usually was the most abundant (> 50% of total rotifers). Marked differences were found among sites; stations I and 2, those nearest to the dam, showed greatest rotifer densities in spring and autumn. Station 4, that nearest to the inflowing rivers, had its highest rotifer abundance in summer. Station 8 had the highest mean density but the least marked seasonal changes in rotifer numbers.The impoundment water dynamics and the relative locations within the lake (distance from the dam or from the rivers) are suggested as determinants for different rotifer assemblages and, probably, for most other planktonic organisms.  相似文献

The effect of sand grain size, porosity and the abundance of algae on the community structure of psammic rotifers was tested in three anthropogenic lakes (Upper Silesia) and compared with three natural ones (West Pomerania). The structure of grain size in the studied beaches of artificial and natural lakes was similar but differences were found in the abundance of algae. The structure of the psammic rotifer community in Upper Silesian lakes was different from natural lakes in West Pomerania. The structure of psammic rotifer communities in anthropogenic reservoirs and lakes (West Pomerania) differed in numbers of species and numbers of psammobiont species, and also diversity index. The most altered structure of rotifer assemblages was observed in the psammon rotifers of the strongly contaminated Dzierżno Duże Lake.  相似文献

The ecology of rotifer assemblages in the periphyton has received little attention relative to that of pelagic rotifers. This paper reviews the ecology of periphytic rotifers, with particular emphasis on the role of macrophytes in the structuring of rotifer assemblages spatially and temporally, and compares these aspects with the dynamics of better known pelagic rotifer communities. Littoral rotifer periphyton communities are typically diverse in lakes, and have composition dissimilar to that of the open water. In rivers, diversity and composition in the pelagic and littoral appear to be similar. Rotifers show preference for macrophyte species they associate with, probably through differences in physical structure or complexity, food concentration or composition, chemical factors, macrophyte age, and differences in the degree of protection from predation provided by macrophytes. These mechanisms are in general not well investigated in rotifers. Factors affecting the seasonal dynamics of periphytic communities appear to be similar to pelagic communities, with seasonal dynamics of substrates and disturbance by flooding or drying also being important.  相似文献

During the last decade much information has been produced about the zooplankton communities in southern Chile; however, most of this is related to the crustacean assemblages. The present communication examines the spatial and temporal distribution of rotifer assemblages and their relation to the environmental variables during one-year period in four Araucanian lakes. A total of 19 species was found in these oligotrophic lakes. Keratella cochlearis, Synchaeta stylata, Trichocerca porcellus, Conochilus unicornis and Collotheca pelagica were widespread, and seven species exhibited a more restricted distribution among the lakes. Species richness varied from 6 to 12; similarly, one or two dominant species usually accounted for more than 80% of the total annual abundance. Similar dominant species occurred in two lakes, but their maximum peaks of abundance differed in time; in the remaining lakes the most important species were different. Calculated rotifer diversity showed a fluctuating pattern, with low values during the year in three lakes, and high ones in Lake Llanquihue. Species diversity was significantly related to species richness in all lakes. Discriminant analysis based on the occurrence and abundances of species throughout the year revealed that the rotifer assemblage in Lake Llanquihue was different from that in the rest of the Araucanian lakes. Furthermore, the same analysis using environmental variables showed that this lake is clearly discriminated from the others on the basis of the ionic composition of the water (i.e. Cl, Na+, Mg2+). Rotifer abundances in these lakes were significantly influenced by a number of abiotic variables, including those related to water ionic composition. These relationships may imply that the small differences in chemical characteristics of these lakes influence the structure of the rotifer community.  相似文献

2005年7月至2006年6月, 我们对安徽省芜湖市境内5个湖泊中轮虫的群落结构及部分水质特征参数进行了调查, 用相关加权综合营养状态指数(TLIc)评价了各湖泊的营养水平, 分析了其中的轮虫群落结构、多样性指数及其与TLIC之间的关系。经鉴定, 5个湖泊中共采集到轮虫79种, 隶属18科31属; 不同营养水平湖泊中出现的轮虫种类数有明显的差异(P<0.01)。除龙窝湖外, 其余4个湖泊中的轮虫种类数与TLIC均呈显著负相关关系(r=–0.984, P<0.05)。湖泊水体的富营养化进程显著地提高了轮虫总密度和第一优势种的优势度, 降低了轮虫群落的均匀度和物种多样性指数。  相似文献

Biological monitoring of the Fly River system in Papua New Guinea has shown that floodplain habitats (oxbow lakes, blocked valley lakes and seasonally inundated grassed floodplain) support diverse and abundant populations of freshwater fishes. Since monitoring first commenced in the early 1980's, a total of 66 fish species representing 33 families has been sampled, with gillnets and rotenone, from a range of sites located on the floodplains of the Fly and Strickland rivers. The fish fauna was dominated by catfishes in the families Ariidae (11 species) and Plotosidae (7 species), with aquatic invertivores being the dominant feeding group. Herring species (Nematalosa spp.) were often very abundant in the oxbow lakes, forming 66% of the total catch in all the floodplain habitats. The fish communities in the oxbow lakes and blocked valley lakes were distinctly different, with several of the smaller fish species being more abundant in the blocked valley lakes, while the oxbow lakes supported more of the larger predatory species. Catches in the oxbow lakes were also generally higher and more diverse than the blocked valley lakes or grassed floodplain sites. Since the commencement of monitoring, catches from the floodplain sites have varied considerably, both spatially and temporally. Reduced catches seen at some sites are probably associated with natural climatic factors, particularly El Niño-induced droughts and algal blooms. Introduced species and increased commercial and artisanal fishing may also be affecting stocks of native fish. Fish populations were shown to recover only slowly in lakes affected by severe drought conditions, with extensive mats of floating grasses hindering fish recolonisation. Fish stocks in a lake affected by an algal bloom recovered more quickly than stocks in lakes affected by drought.  相似文献

The crustacean zooplankton communities of seven, small, eutrophic West Virginian impoundments were examined during midsummer. The more eutrophic lakes had as dominants, 2 cyclopoid, 1 calanoid, and 2 cladoceran species. Cluster analysis showed that the 4 more eutrophic lakes clustered together, further cluster analysis showed there was a very similar group of 5 species which characterized the most eutrophic lakes. Principal components analysis showed that the more eutrophic lakes were characterized by having more cyclopoids and cladocerans than calanoids. Niche breadth showed that the most often dominant species had much higher values than the species ohich could be considered secondary dominants.  相似文献

Benthic and periphytic bdelloid communities from 16 alpine lakes from 1700 to 2850 m above sea level in Sesia Valley (Piedmont region, North‐western Italy), sampled during summer 2001 and 2002, were analyzed. Seventeen species were identified from these species‐poor communities, with 1 to 6 species each. Dissotrocha macrostyla and Philodina citrina were the most common species, present in 10 lakes while 9 species were collected from one lake only. New morphological details from S.E.M. pictures of Dissotrocha macrostyla revealed that Dissotrocha macrostyla tuberculata (Gosse , 1886) is only a seasonal morphotype. Its different appearance is due to the presence of locally distributed microscopic mucous bubbles (diameter 1.41 ± 0.18 μm) on the trunk surface, produced by the rotifer itself under stressful conditions.  相似文献

The results of four field surveys for Rotifera in Tasmania are summarized. Most new species and records in a 1987 survey were from acid waters (pH < 4.0) of dune lakes on the west coast (42° S). Marked intra- and interhabitat differences in rotifer communities of lakes and ponds were demonstrated by cluster analysis and related to habitat heterogeneity.  相似文献

The distribution of rotifer communities between emergent (Typha angustifolia) and submerged (Chara tomentosa) vegetation and a comparatively open water zone were compared during the spring, summer and autumn seasons at three macrophyte-dominated lakes. This survey identified 107 rotifera species of which 58% of the taxonomical structure was common for the three examined lakes. Stoneworts with a more complicated spatial and morphological structure (having a much longer stem length than the narrow leaf cattail), supported higher rotifer densities. The stem length appeared to be the best predictor of all the macrophyte parameters and pH and chlorophyll a for the chemical variables, for explaining the variation of rotifer densities using the stepwise multiple forward regressions. The distribution of pelagic species did not differ between particular sites, which may have reflected the behavioural requirements of those rotifers. Some of them remained in the open water zone while others seeking an anti-predator refuge, gathered within macrophyte stands during the daytime. Moreover, there were nine Chara-associated species recorded and only one Typha-associated species was noted. INCO Ltd. near Sudbury, Ontario is rehabilitating nickel- and copper-mine tailings using vegetating techniques that have resulted in habitats of varying age and complexity. Mite (Acari) communities and soil quality characteristics were used to evaluate soil ecosystem development on four tailings sites, 0, 8, 20 and 40 years post rehabilitation in comparison with that on four control sites. Abundance, species richness, diversity (H) and community structure of soil mites were sensitive indicators of tailings rehabilitation and soil formation. Mite density on older and botanically diverse tailings sites was comparable to that on control sites; however, species richness of oribatids and mesostigmatics was lower than on control sites. Mite species richness and diversity on tailings were lower at less botanically diverse sites regardless of age. Similarity of tailings-mite communities to control-site communities generally increased with age; however, similarities were all less than 60% (Sorenson's quantitative index, C N). Mite assemblages on tailings were dominated by a few colonizing species, whereas control sites had a diverse assemblage of species. Soil pH and organic matter (SOM) of rehabilitated tailings improved with age and degree of botanical complexity. Mite density and diversity was positively related to SOM particularily for the Oribatida. SOM and mites were mainly restricted to the 0–5-cm horizon.  相似文献

Five small ponds on Cape Herschel, Ellesmere Island, N.W.T. (latitude 78° 37 N; 74° 42 W) were investigated, and their rotifer fauna discussed. Although the number of individuals is very low, the rotifer assemblage is remarkably rich (33 species), especially considering the harsh environmental conditions, and the short ice-free period of only six weeks. The shallow ponds are all alkaline, and the rotifer species are either cosmopolitan, or very rare. The rotifer species present in samples from 180 small water bodies, or ponds, in England were identified and listed for each pond. These communities were used to provide a system of classification of ponds applicable on a national basis, using the program TWINSPAN. Sites were also ordinated using DECORANA to identify major trends within the data set. The environmental factors most highly correlated with rotifer community were: (a) conductivity (P<0.001), (b) pH (P<0.001) and (c) permanence of water body (P<0.001). Out of 167 species, 32 were acting as indicators. It is suggested that a pond classification could be based on these species alone.  相似文献

1. The effect of macrophytes on the spatial distribution of littoral rotifers was examined in Lake Rotomanuka, New Zealand (37°55'S, 175°19'E). Total rotifer abundances and those of abundant species, were compared between three macrophyte species, Myriophyllum propinquum , Eleocharis sphacelata and Egeria densa , and spatially across a littoral transect in relation to these species.
2. The abundances of many species, for example Euchlanis dilatata, Lecane closterocerca and L. lunaris, differed significantly between macrophyte species. More planktonic forms, Ascomorpha saltans , Keratella cochlearis and Synchaeta oblonga, however, showed no significant preference for macrophyte species.
3. Differences in rotifer abundances were evident even when different species of macrophyte grew in close proximity to one another, indicating that variations in physical and chemical conditions, which occur in the littoral of Lake Rotomanuka, could be largely discounted for much of the variation between macrophyte species.
4. Variation in rotifers between macrophytes was probably the result of a number of factors, including differences in macrophyte morphology, macrophyte age, epiphytic algal growths and the differential effects of predation by invertebrates and fish between macrophytes.
5. Variability of rotifer abundances spatially across the ecotone was less marked than between macrophyte species. The species of macrophyte occurring, and therefore the community composition and distribution of macrophyte species in the littoral, appears to be a major influence in the spatial structuring of rotifer communities in the littoral region of lakes.  相似文献
