There has been a recent revival in attempts to understand changes in patterns of abundance of Plasmodium spp. that infect humans. This has been driven by the purportedly beneficial effects of co-infection on clinical pathology and the recognition of Plasmodium vivax as a public health problem in its own right. In contrast to the attention given to mixed-species infections in humans, parasite infections and interactions within the mosquito vector remain poorly documented, even though the distribution of vector-borne parasites such as Plasmodium spp. depends on vector-vertebrate and, crucially, vector-parasite interactions. To understand malaria epidemiology and to design appropriate control measures, this gap must be re-addressed.  相似文献

The ecology and geographical distribution of disease vectors are major determinants of spatial and temporal variations in the transmission dynamics of vector‐borne pathogens. However, there are limited studies on the ecology of vectors that contribute to the natural transmission of most vector‐borne pathogens. Avian Plasmodium parasites are multihost mosquito‐borne pathogens transmitted by multiple mosquito species, which might regulate the diversity and persistence of these parasites. From 2007 to 2010, we conducted entomological surveys at Sakata wetland in central Japan, to investigate temporal variation in mosquito occurrence and prevalence of avian Plasmodium lineages in the mosquito populations. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)‐based method was used to detect Plasmodium parasites and identify the blood sources of mosquitoes. Culex inatomii and Cpipiens pallens represented 60.0% and 34.8% of 11 mosquito species collected, respectively. Our results showed that the two dominant mosquito species most likely serve as principal vectors of avian Plasmodium parasites during June, which coincides with the breeding season of bird species nesting in the wetland reed beds. Fourteen animal species were identified as blood sources of mosquitoes, with the oriental reed warbler (Acrocephalus orientalis) being the commonest blood source. Although there was significant temporal variation in the occurrence of mosquitoes and prevalence of Plasmodium lineages in the mosquitoes, the dominant Plasmodium lineages shared by the two dominant mosquito species were consistently found at the same time during transmission seasons. Because vector competence cannot be confirmed solely by PCR approaches, experimental demonstration is required to provide definitive evidence of transmission suggested in this study.  相似文献

Abstract We examined the potential of forest plantations to support communities of forest‐using insects when planted into an area with greatly reduced native forest cover. We surveyed the insect fauna of Eucalyptus globulus (Myrtaceae) plantations and native Eucalyptus marginata dominated remnant woodland in south‐western Australia, comparing edge to interior habitats, and plantations surrounded by a pastoral matrix to plantations adjacent to native remnants. We also surveyed insects in open pasture. Analyses focused on three major insect orders: Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. Plantations were found to support many forest‐using insect species, but the fauna had an overall composition that was distinct from the remnant forest. The pasture fauna had more in common with plantations than forest remnants. Insect communities of plantations were different from native forest both because fewer insect species were present, and because they had a few more abundant insect species. Some of the dominant species in plantations were known forestry pests. One pest species (Gonipterus scutellatus) was also very abundant in remnant forest, although it was only recently first recorded in Western Australia. It may be that plantation forestry provided an ecological bridge that facilitated invasion of the native forest by this nonendemic pest species. Plantation communities had more leaf‐feeding moths and beetles than remnant forests. Plantations also had fewer ants, bees, evanioid wasps and predatory canopy beetles than remnants, but predatory beetles were more common in the understory of plantations than remnants. Use of broad spectrum insecticides in plantations might limit the ability of these natural enemies to regulate herbivore populations. There were only weak indications of differences in composition of the fauna at habitat edges and no consistent differences between the fauna of plantations adjacent to remnant vegetation and those surrounded by agriculture, suggesting that there is little scope for managing biodiversity outcomes by choosing different edge to interior ratios or by locating plantations near or far from remnants.  相似文献

According to environmental-based theories on the maintenance of sexual reproduction, sexual and asexual populations may coexist if they occupy different ecological niches. The aphid Rhopalosiphum padi offers a good opportunity to test this hypothesis since sexual and asexual lineages show local coexistence during a large part of their respective life-cycles. Because these two reproductive variants are morphologically identical but genetically distinct, we first characterized them using genetic markers in populations of R. padi in areas where sexual and asexual lineages may occur in sympatry. We then inferred the natal host plant of sexual and asexual genotypes by analysing stable isotopic ratios and showed that sexual ones mostly originated from C3 Poaceae while asexual ones originated from C3 and C4 plants, although the majority came from C4 Poaceae. These findings indicate that ecological niches of sexual and asexual lineages of R. padi differ, offering a plausible explanation for the local coexistence of the two reproductive modes in this species through habitat specialisation.  相似文献

In Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Culex pipiens is considered one of the most common mosquitoes. Owing to their exceptional chemical, physical, biological, and eco-friendly properties, ionic liquids (ILs) have been recently considered promising compounds in managing a variety of organisms. Six aminopyridinium-based IL derivatives were assessed to follow their efficacy against adults of C. pipiens. Mosquitoes were treated with aminopyridinium-based IL derivatives either orally or by spraying. It was observed in the first three days of treatment that the accumulated mortality rates were generally higher in sprayed mosquitoes with IL derivatives than their accumulated mortality rates in orally treated mosquitoes with the same ILs. It was also observed that the accumulated mortalities of sprayed mosquitoes at 0.125 and 0.25 g/L were higher than those in mosquitoes orally treated with the same concentrations. The highest mortality rates were 64 and 80% for sprayed and orally treated mosquitoes, respectively. The mode of action of aminopyridinium-based IL derivatives was tracked, and it is demonstrated to be through the digestive route for orally treated mosquitoes. This is the first study to show the adulticidal effects of aminopyridinium-based ILs in controlling C. pipiens.  相似文献

Cell movement or motility is essential for a large variety of processes. Fertilization and host cells invasion by parasites are among the mostly studied models so far. Body of evidences into the literature raises the question that common mechanisms may be found in the sequential events that lead to cell motility in these two particular models. This short review aims at highlighting these common features by comparing knowledge on motile forms of Plasmodium falciparum and one of the best known motile cell namely the spermatozoa. Emphasis will be done on the substantial changes affecting the biochemical, electrophysiological and functional properties of both models.  相似文献

A fluctuating environment may be perceived as a composition of different environments, or as an environment per se, in which it is the fluctuation itself that poses a selection pressure. If so, then organisms may adapt to this alternation. We tested this using experimental populations of spider mites that have been evolving for 45 generations in a homogeneous environment (pepper or tomato plants), or in a heterogeneous environment composed of an alternation of these two plants approximately at each generation. The performance (daily oviposition rate and juvenile survival) of individuals from these populations was tested in each of the homogeneous environments, and in two alternating environments, one every 3 days and the other between generations. To discriminate between potential genetic interactions between alleles conferring adaptation to each host plant and environmental effects of evolving in a fluctuating environment, we compared the performance of all lines with that of a cross between tomato and pepper lines. As a control, two lines within each selection regime were also crossed. We found that crosses between alternating lines and between pepper and tomato lines performed worse than crosses between lines evolving in homogeneous environments when tested in that environment. In contrast, alternating lines performed either better or similarly to lines evolving in homogeneous environments when tested in a fluctuating environment. Our results suggest that fluctuating environments are more than the juxtaposition of two environments. Hence, tests for adaptation of organisms evolving in such environments should be carried out in fluctuating conditions.  相似文献

The effect of spatial habitat structure and patchiness may differ among species within a multi-trophic system. Theoretical models predict that species at higher trophic levels are more negatively affected by fragmentation than are their hosts or preys. The absence or presence of the higher trophic level, in turn, can affect the population dynamics of lower levels and even the stability of the trophic system as a whole. The present study examines different effects of spatial habitat structure with two field experiments, using as model system the parasitoid Cotesia popularis which is a specialist larval parasitoid of the herbivore Tyria jacobaeae. One experiment examines the colonisation rate of the parasitoid and the percentage parasitism at distances occurring on a natural scale; the other experiment examines the dispersal rate and the percentage parasitism in relation to the density of the herbivore and its host plant. C. popularis was able to reach artificial host populations at distances up to the largest distance created (at least 80 m from the nearest source population). Also, the percentage parasitism did not differ among the distances. The density experiment showed that the total number of herbivores parasitised was higher in patches with a high density of hosts, regardless of the density of the host plant. The percentage parasitism, however, was not related to the density of the host. The density of the host plant did have a (marginally) significant effect on the percentage parasitism, probably indicating that the parasitoid uses the host plant of the herbivore as a cue to find the herbivore itself. In conclusion, the parasitoid was not affected by the spatial habitat structure on spatial scales that are typical of local patches.  相似文献

Optimal oviposition theory predicts a positive relationship between female preference for oviposition hosts and offspring performance. Interspecies effects on oviposition preference have been widely investigated, especially for herbivores. However, intraspecies variation, such as nitrogen content, might also influence female preference for oviposition hosts and subsequent offspring performance. To evaluate this possibility, we investigated the oviposition preference of a zoophytophagous omnivore and the development and survival of its nymphs on a single species of host plant that varied in nitrogen content. In choice and no‐choice experiments without prey, female omnivores were allowed to oviposit on plants that had been fertilized using 4 rates of nitrogen fertilizer (39, 78, 156, and 311 mg/L nitrogen) for 72 h. After 72 h, the most females were found on tomato plants receiving high concentrations of nitrogen fertilizer and more eggs were laid on those plants. First instar nymphs developed more rapidly on high‐nitrogen plants and third instar nymphs developed faster on low‐nitrogen plants. Plant nitrogen did not affect nymph survival to the adult stage, or the probability of survival over time. Although female omnivores did discriminate between potential oviposition hosts based on plant nitrogen, their choices did not significantly impact nymph development or survival. This is the first study to show that intraspecies variation in nitrogen content between plants affects the oviposition preference of female omnivores, but not offspring performance.  相似文献

Cytochrome c (Cc) and cytochrome c peroxidase (CcP) form a physiological complex in the inter-membrane space of yeast mitochondria, where CcP reduces hydrogen peroxide to water using the electrons provided by ferrous Cc. The Cc-CcP system has been a popular choice of study of interprotein biological electron transfer (ET) and in understanding dynamics within a protein-protein complex. In this review we have charted seven decades of research beginning with the discovery of CcP and leading to the latest functional and structural work, which has clarified the mechanism of the intermolecular ET, addressed the putative functional role of a low-affinity binding site, and identified lowly-populated intermediates on the energy landscape of complex formation. Despite the remarkable attention bestowed on this complex, a number of outstanding issues remain to be settled on the way to a complete understanding of Cc-CcP interaction.  相似文献

Understanding substrate binding and product release in cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes is important for explaining their key role in drug metabolism, toxicity, xenobiotic degradation and biosynthesis. Here, molecular simulations of substrate and product exit from the buried active site of a mammalian P450, the microsomal CYP2C5, identified a dominant exit channel, termed pathway (pw) 2c. Previous simulations with soluble bacterial P450s showed a different dominant egress channel, pw2a. Combining these, we propose two mechanisms in CYP2C5: (i) a one-way route by which lipophilic substrates access the enzyme from the membrane by pw2a and hydroxylated products egress along pw2c; and (ii) a two-way route for access and egress, along pw2c, for soluble compounds. The proposed differences in substrate access and product egress routes between membrane-bound mammalian P450s and soluble bacterial P450s highlight the adaptability of the P450 fold to the requirements of differing cellular locations and substrate specificity profiles.  相似文献

Intraerythrocytic malaria parasites induce considerable change in the permeability of the membrane of their host cell. Using classical techniques of radiolabel uptake and iso-osmotic lysis, the permeability characteristics of the host-cell membrane have been determined. In a recent analysis of these results, we concluded that there are at least two types of channel that conform to the data: a low copy number (four channels per cell) type that mediates the transport of cations, anions and most other osmolytes that were tested, and a high copy number (300-400 channels per cell) type that is an anion channel that could also mediate the translocation of purine nucleosides. Patch-clamping experiments using cells infected with Plasmodium falciparum reveal 200-1000 anion channels of more than one type that are of host-cell endogenous provenance. Recent reports show that parasites can grow normally in erythrocytes that lack these endogenous agencies and in which the anion channels are not expressed, although their osmolyte permeability is present. We suggest that only the latter type of channel is important for normal development of the parasite.  相似文献

Background

Social parasitism is an important selective pressure for social insect species. It is particularly the case for the hosts of dulotic (so called slave-making) ants, which pillage the brood of host colonies to increase the worker force of their own colony. Such raids can have an important impact on the fitness of the host nest. An arms race which can lead to geographic variation in host defenses is thus expected between hosts and parasites. In this study we tested whether the presence of a social parasite (the dulotic ant Myrmoxenus ravouxi) within an ant community correlated with a specific behavioral defense strategy of local host or non-host populations of Temnothorax ants. Social recognition often leads to more or less pronounced agonistic interactions between non-nestmates ants. Here, we monitored agonistic behaviors to assess whether ants discriminate social parasites from other ants. It is now well-known that ants essentially rely on cuticular hydrocarbons to discriminate nestmates from aliens. If host species have evolved a specific recognition mechanism for their parasite, we hypothesize that the differences in behavioral responses would not be fully explained simply by quantitative dissimilarity in cuticular hydrocarbon profiles, but should also involve a qualitative response due to the detection of particular compounds. We scaled the behavioral results according to the quantitative chemical distance between host and parasite colonies to test this hypothesis.

Results

Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles were distinct between species, but host species did not show a clearly higher aggression rate towards the parasite than toward non-parasite intruders, unless the degree of response was scaled by the chemical distance between intruders and recipient colonies. By doing so, we show that workers of the host and of a non-host species in the parasitized site displayed more agonistic behaviors (bites and ejections) towards parasite than toward non-parasite intruders.

Conclusions

We used two different analyses of our behavioral data (standardized with the chemical distance between colonies or not) to test our hypothesis. Standardized data show behavioral differences which could indicate qualitative and specific parasite recognition. We finally stress the importance of considering the whole set of potentially interacting species to understand the coevolution between social parasites and their hosts.

The completely sequenced genome of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC6803 contains three open reading frames, petC1, petC2, and petC3, encoding putative Rieske iron-sulfur proteins. After heterologous overexpression, all three gene products have been characterized and shown to be Rieske proteins as typified by sequence analysis and EPR spectroscopy. Two of the overproduced proteins contained already incorporated iron-sulfur clusters, whereas the third one formed unstable aggregates, in which the FeS cluster had to be reconstituted after refolding of the denatured protein. Although EPR spectroscopy showed typical FeS signals for all Rieske proteins, an unusual low midpoint potential was revealed for PetC3 by EPR redox titration. Detailed characterization of Synechocystis membranes indicated that all three Rieske proteins are expressed under physiological conditions. Both for PetC1 and PetC3 the association with the thylakoid membrane was shown, and both could be identified, although in different amounts, in the isolated cytochrome b(6)f complex. The considerably lower redox potential determined for PetC3 indicates heterogeneous cytochrome b(6)f complexes in Synechocystis and suggests still to be established alternative electron transport routes.  相似文献

Prevailing theory assumes cuckoos lay at random among host nests within a population, although it has been suggested that cuckoos could choose large nests and relatively active pairs within host populations. We tested the hypothesis that egg matching could be improved by cuckoos choosing nests in which host eggs more closely match their own, by assessing matching and monitoring nest fate in great reed warblers naturally or experimentally parasitized by eggs of European cuckoos. A positive correlation between cuckoo and host egg visual features suggests that cuckoos do not lay at random within a population, but choose nests and this improves egg matching: naturally parasitized cuckoo eggs were more similar to host eggs as perceived by humans and as measured by spectrophotometry. Our results suggest a hitherto overlooked step in cuckoo-host evolutionary arms races, and have nontrivial implications for the common experimental practice of artificially parasitizing clutches.  相似文献

Ecologists have hypothesized that an increase in the biomass of piscivorous fish in lakes will cause a decrease in populations of planktivorous fish, an increase in the size of herbivorous zooplankton and a decrease in the biomass of phytoplankton. Here we present an experimental test of whether the effects of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) cascade to the planktivorous fish, zooplankton and phytoplankton of a 15-ha water storage reservoir. A pilot study indicated that the reservoir was eutrophic with dense populations of planktivorous fish dominated by threadfin shad (Dorosoma petenense). No piscovorous fish were present in the reservoir. We conducted a one-month mesocosm experiment using water and plankton from the reservoir showing that the presence of threadfin shad reduced large-sized zooplankton and increased the productivity and biomass of phytoplankton. To test whether the effects of piscivorous fish could cascade to the plankton, we assessed the effects of the addition of piscivorous largemouth bass on the planktivorous fish, zooplankton and biomass of phytoplankton of the reservoir by monitoring the reservoir during the year before and the two years after largemouth bass were stocked. In the second year after the addition of largemouth bass, the number of planktivorous fish decreased and the relative abundance of threadfin shad declined. Although the abundance of cladocerans increased after the addition of largemouth bass, the average size of zooplankton did not change. We did not detect changes in chlorophyll a, Secchi depth, or concentrations of total phosphorus and total nitrogen as a result of the addition of largemouth bass.  相似文献

Recent experimental evidence suggests that parasites can not only evade immune responses actively but also exploit the hormonal microenvironment within the host to favor their establishment, growth and reproduction. The benefit for parasites of hormonal exploitation is so great that they have evolved structures similar to the steroid and protein hormone receptors expressed in upper vertebrates that can bind to the hormonal metabolites synthesized by the host. This strategy is exemplified by two parasites that respond to adrenal steroids and sexual steroids, respectively: Schistosoma mansoni and Taenia crassiceps. Understanding how the host endocrine system can, under certain circumstances, favor the establishment of a parasite, and characterizing the parasite hormone receptors that are involved might aid the design of hormonal analogs and drugs that affect the parasite exclusively.  相似文献
