The steroid dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is associated with longevity and adaptation against external stress in humans. The aim of the study was to investigate the acute effect of a 30-min hot spring immersion at 41 °C on insulin resistance measures of 16 male subjects, in relation to DHEA-S level. To elucidate the role of DHEA-S in the coping against the heat stress, all subjects were evenly divided into lower and upper halves according to their baseline DHEA-S concentrations. The levels of glucose, insulin, blood pressure, and stress hormones (growth hormone, testosterone, and cortisol) in both groups were compared before and after hot spring immersion. The result shows that hot spring immersion significantly increased heart rate and reduced diastolic blood pressure, both of which were paralleled with a drop of DHEA-S concentration. Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and area under curve of glucose (GAUC) of oral glucose tolerance test were significantly increased by the hot spring immersion only in the Low DHEA-S group. Likewise, hot spring immersion caused an opposing effect on cortisol changes for the Low and High DHEA-S groups (+95% vs. −33%, p < 0.05), respectively. In conclusion, hot spring bathing induced insulin resistance confined only to those Low DHEA-S individuals. This response may be associated with a stress response such as increased cortisol levels.  相似文献

The response of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and urinary cGMP excretion to central hypervolemia induced by water immersion was assessed twice in five healthy male subjects, once while immersed in water to the neck for 3 h and again on a control day. Plasma ANP and urinary cGMP were measured by radioimmunoassay. Compared with the control day, overall change in plasma ANP on the immersion day was significant (p less than 0.05). In response to water immersion, plasma ANP increased from a base-line level of 13.2 +/- 3.1 (mean +/- SEM) to 24.2 +/- 5.5 pg/mL by 0.5 h of immersion and was sustained at that level throughout the immersion period. Plasma ANP returned to the base-line level at 1 h postimmersion. Urinary cGMP excretion increased significantly by 1 h of immersion and was sustained at that level throughout water immersion and 1 h postimmersion (p less than 0.05). During water immersion urine flow, urinary sodium and potassium excretion, free water clearance, and osmolar clearance increased while plasma renin activity, serum aldosterone, and blood pressure fell; all changes were significant (p less than 0.05). Creatinine clearance and hematocrit did not show any significant changes. These data suggest that an increase in plasma ANP may contribute to the natriuretic and diuretic response to central hypervolemia, and that the measurement of urinary cGMP may be a valuable marker of ANP biological responsiveness.  相似文献

The mortality response of diapausing and non-diapausing twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) on persimmons to hot water immersion treatments between 44 and 54 °C was examined, for potential as a quarantine treatment. The mean immersion time for mean 99% mortality (LT99) of diapausing mites at 44 °C was 211 min, and this time decreased with increasing temperature to 3.6 min at 54 °C. Non-diapausing mites were found to be less tolerant to temperatures below 48 °C, with an estimated LT99 of 102 min at 44 °C, but had similar thermotolerance above 48 °C. In 47 °C water the immersion time required to kill 99% of diapausing mites was estimated at 67 min. This time was not reduced by subsequent coolstorage at 0 °C for up to eight weeks. Rather, coolstorage had the effect of keeping mites alive, relative to LT99 estimates calculated for mites stored at 20 °C. Similarly the thermotolerance of mites did not change with increased time in diapause, even though mites in diapause for 12 weeks had high control mortality. Hot water immersion appears to be a potentially useful disinfestation method for persimmons.  相似文献

We determined whether immersion in 49 degrees C water for 20 min, a quarantine treatment developed for disinfestation of fruit flies in lychee, Litchi chinensis Sonn., and longan, Dimocarpus longan (Lourd.) Steud., exported from Hawaii, would also disinfest fruit of two species of Cryptophlebia. The pattern of tolerance to heat in Cryptophlebia illepida (Butler) was generally eggs < neonates < early instars = late instars < pupae. No C. illepida survived immersion for 16 or 20 min. Late fourth and fifth instars were determined to be the most tolerant stage that occurs in harvested fruit. Late instars of Cryptophlebia ombrodelta (Lower) were more tolerant of hot-water immersion than those of C. illepida, but no C. ombrodelta late instars survived immersion for 16 or 20 min. The hot water immersion quarantine treatment for fruit flies should effectively disinfest lychees and longans of any Cryptophlebia.  相似文献

BackgroundThe oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus, is cultivated worldwide. It is one of the most appreciated mushrooms due to its high nutritional value. Immersion of the substrate in hot water is one of the most popular and worldwide treatment used for mushroom farmers. It is cheap and easy to implement.AimsTo compare the yields obtained during mushroom production of P. ostreatus using different pre-treatments (immersion in hot water, sterilization by steam and the use of fungicide) to determine if they influence mushroom crop.MethodsFour different treatments of substrate (wheat straw) were carried out: (i) immersion in hot water (IHW); (ii) steam sterilization; (iii) chemical; and (iv) untreated. The residual water from the IHW treatment was used to evaluate the mycelium growth and the production of P. ostreatus.ResultsCarbendazim treatment produced highest yields (BE: 106.93%) while IHW produced the lowest BE with 75.83%. Sugars, N, P, K and Ca were found in residual water of IHW treatment. The residual water increased the mycelium growth but did not increase yields.ConclusionsWe have proved that IHW treatment of substrate reduced yields at least 20% when compared with other straw treatments such as steam, chemical or untreated wheat straw. Nutrients like sugars, proteins and minerals were found in the residual water extract which is the resultant water where the immersion treatment is carried out. The loss of these nutrients would be the cause of yield decrease. Alternative methods to the use of IHW as treatment of the substrate should be considered to reduce economical loss.  相似文献

Hot water immersion is used by athletes in weight category sports to produce rapid weight loss (RWL) by means of passive fluid loss, and often is performed with the addition of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate). This study investigated the magnitude of body mass losses during hot water immersion with or without the addition of salt, with the temperature commencing at 37.8°C and being self-adjusted by participants to their maximum tolerable temperature. In a crossover design, eight male MMA athletes (29.4 ± 5.3 y; 1.83 ± 0.05 m; 85.0 ± 4.9 kg) performed a 20 min whole-body immersion followed by a 40 min wrap in a warm room, twice in sequence per visit. During one visit, only fresh water was used (FWB), and in the other visit, magnesium sulphate (1.6% wt/vol) was added to the bath (SWB). Prior to each visit, 24 h of carbohydrate, fibre and fluid restriction was undertaken. Water temperatures at the end of the first and second baths were ~39.0°C and ~39.5°C, respectively. Body mass losses induced by the hot bath protocols were 1.71 ± 0.70 kg and 1.66 ± 0.78 kg for FWB and SWB, respectively (P = 0.867 between trials, d = 0.07), and equivalent to ~2.0% body mass. Body mass lost during the entire RWL protocol was 4.5 ± 0.7%. Under the conditions employed, the magnitude of body mass lost in SWB was similar to FWB. Augmenting passive fluid loss during hot water immersion with the addition of salt may require a higher salt concentration than that presently utilised.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal changes in hormonal and thermoregulatory responses. Eight volunteers were subjected to the experiment at four times of the year: around the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, and at the summer and winter solstices at latitude 35° N. Plasma antidiuretic hormone (ADH), angiotensin II (ANG II), aldosterone (ALD) and plasma renin activity (PRA) were analyzed before and after water immersion. Seasonal changes in thermoregulatory responses were assessed by measuring core temperature and sweat rate during immersion of the leg in hot water (at 42°C) for 30 min in a room maintained at 26°C. The concentration of plasma ADH and ALD before water immersion was significantly higher in summer than in other seasons. The concentrations of ANG II and PRA did not show seasonal variations. Changes in tympanic temperature during water immersion showed significant differences between seasons, and were higher in winter than in other seasons. The sweat rate was significantly higher in summer than in other seasons. In summary, ADH and ALD concentrations displayed a seasonal rhythm with marked elevation in summer; this may be a compensative mechanism to prevent dehydration from increased sweat loss during summer due to heat acclimatization.  相似文献

Hot water immersion and insecticidal coatings were tested to determine if they could be used to disinfest Persian limes, Citrus latifolia Tanaka, of the mealybug pests Planococcus citri Risso and Pseudococcus odermatti Miller & Williams. A 20-min 49 degrees C hot water immersion treatment is effective in killing mealybugs and all other arthropods tested found externally on limes, or under the calyx. No insects or mites were found to survive after the 20-min hot water treatment. In this test, 7,200 limes were treated with 1,308 insects killed and zero survivors. Treatment at 49 degrees C for 20 min did not significantly affect quality when treated fruit were compared with untreated control fruit. Four coatings were tested at a 3% rate: two petroleum-based oils (Ampol and Sunspray oil), a vegetable oil (natural oil), and a soap (Mpede). The coatings gave up to 94% kill (Ampol) of mealybugs, which is not sufficient to provide quarantine security. The coatings might be effective as a postharvest dip before shipment.  相似文献

Remarkably, bathing in hot springs containing high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) influences cardiovascular function more than bathing in fresh water. The CO2-enriched water in hot springs generally contains many salts, whose interactions remain unknown. We separately evaluated the actions of individual factors in CO2-enriched water and confirmed that CO2 and NaCl have combined effects on blood pressure fluctuations in anesthetized rats. Animals equipped with sensor probes to monitor body temperature, skin blood flow and arterial blood pressure were immersed in bathwater (35°C) containing CO2 with NaCl, KCl or sucrose. The effects of these factors on cardiovascular function were evaluated using power-spectral analysis of fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate. Compared with immersion in tap water, heart rate and skin vascular resistance were reduced during immersion in CO2-enriched water irrespective of the presence of other components. In terms of the very low frequency range (0.02–0.195 Hz), the power of blood pressure fluctuation during immersion was significantly reduced when the CO2-enriched water contained more than 1.5% NaCl but was not influenced by other components of similar osmotic pressure and the same specific gravity. The results indicated that the coexistence of CO2 and sodium ions in bathwater reduce blood pressure fluctuations, and suggested that this combination effect of CO2 and salt contributes to the sedative effect on human cardiovascular functions while bathing in CO2-hot springs.  相似文献

Plasma catecholamine levels during water immersion in man   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In ten normal subjects thermoneutral neck-out water immersion produced a highly significant natriuresis and diuresis mediated via an induced central hypervolaemia. During immersion suppression of plasma noradrenaline and adrenaline was observed but no change occurred in plasma dopamine levels. No correlation was found between the suppression of noradrenaline and the diuresis and natriuresis. The reduction in plasma noradrenaline observed may reflect a widespread diminution of sympatho-adrenal activity during water immersion. This reduction could be a consequence of the cardiovascular changes of immersion and may not be directly involved in the mechanism of the renal response.  相似文献

The effects of alcohol on core cooling rates (rectal and tympanic), skin temperatures, and metabolic rate were determined for 10 subjects rendered hypothermic by immersion for 45 min in 10 degrees C water. Experiments were duplicated with and without a 20-min period of exercise at the beginning of cold water immersion. Measurements were continued during rewarming in a hot bath. With blood alcohol concentrations averaging 82 mg 100 mL-1, core cooling rates and changes in skin temperatures were insignificantly different from controls, even if the exercise period was imposed. Alcohol reduced shivering metabolic rate by an overall mean of 13%, insufficient to affect cooling rate. Alcohol had no effect on metabolic rate during exercise. During rewarming by hot bath, the amount of 'afterdrop' and rate of increase in core temperature were unaffected by alcohol. It was concluded that alcohol in a moderate dosage does not influence the rate of progress into hypothermia or subsequent, efficient rewarming. This emphasizes that the high incidence of alcohol involvement in water-related fatalities is due to alcohol potentiation of accidents rather than any direct effects on cold water survival, although very high doses of alcohol leading to unconsciousness would increase rate of progress into hypothermia.  相似文献

Lithium clearance (CLi) has been advanced as a measure of sodium delivery from the proximal tubules. Because information on the intrarenal effects of water immersion is only limited, and available data are conflicting with respect to the effects on the proximal tubule, we examined the effects of 3 h of water immersion on renal functional parameters, including CLi, in eight healthy subjects. Studies were carried out during maximal water diuresis. Water immersion resulted in a significant increase in sodium excretion, from preimmersion values of 74.0 +/- 9.6 to 155.4 +/- 12.0 mumol/min at the third immersion hour (P less than 0.01). This natriuresis was accompanied by an increase in CLi from 26.3 +/- 1.9 (preimmersion) to 37.0 +/- 3.1 ml/min (P less than 0.01). Fractional lithium reabsorption (FRLi) decreased from 76.4 +/- 1.0 to 69.6 +/- 1.3% (P less than 0.01). None of these changes was found in eight healthy subjects undergoing a time-control study without water immersion. The large fall in FRLi found during immersion is compatible with a major resetting of the proximal glomerulotubular balance. In this regard the renal response to water immersion resembles saline expansion rather than mere intravascular expansion. The lithium data suggested a large rise in distal delivery accompanied by an almost as large rise in distal reabsorption. The free water clearance data were in agreement with this interpretation. However, no changes were found in fractional excretion of phosphate and uric acid. Therefore such a major resetting of proximal glomerulotubular balance can be doubted.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of immersion and exercise on prolactin during pregnancy   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Prolactin is an important hormone during pregnancy, affecting mother, fetus, and amniotic fluid volume. Immersion is known to affect prolactin levels significantly. To determine the effect of immersion and exercise on the prolactin response during pregnancy, we examined serum prolactin levels at 15, 25, and 35 weeks' gestation and 10 weeks post partum. Twelve women completed 20 min land rest, 20 min immersion in 30 degrees C water to the xiphoid, and 20 min exercise in the water at 60% VO2max. Resting prolactin levels were 1.91 +/- 0.32, 4.55 +/- 0.5, and 5.85 +/- 0.27 nmol.l-1 +/- standard error of the mean at 15, 25, and 35 weeks' gestation, respectively. Postpartum lactating women had a resting mean prolactin level of 3.95 +/- 1.6 versus 0.22 +/- 0.4 nmol.l-1 in non-lactating women. Prolactin levels declined significantly during immersion even after correction for dilution by plasma volume shifts. The immersion response was inversely related to the duration of pregnancy with 29%, 22%, and 12% drops during 15-, 25- and 35-week trials, respectively. Compared to rest, exercise prolactin levels remained depressed during the 15th and 25th week trials. We hypothesize that immersion in water caused prolactin levels to decline.  相似文献

Climate warming predicts changes to the frequency and height of cloud-immersion events in mountain communities. Threatened southern Appalachian spruce–fir forests have been suggested to persist because of frequent periods of cloud immersion. These relic forests exist on only seven mountaintop areas, grow only above ca. 1,500 m elevation (maximum 2,037 m), and harbor the endemic Abies fraseri. To predict future distribution, we examined the ecophysiological effects of cloud immersion on saplings of A. fraseri and Picea rubens at their upper and lower elevational limits. Leaf photosynthesis, conductance, transpiration, xylem water potentials, and general abiotic variables were measured simultaneously on individuals at the top (1,960 m) and bottom (1,510 m) of their elevation limits on numerous clear and cloud-immersed days throughout the growing season. The high elevation sites had 1.5 as many cloud-immersed days (75 % of days) as the low elevation sites (56 % of days). Cloud immersion resulted in higher photosynthesis, leaf conductance, and xylem water potentials, particularly during afternoon measurements. Leaf conductance remained higher throughout the day with corresponding increases in photosynthesis and transpiration, despite low photon flux density levels, leading to an increase in water potentials from morning to afternoon. The endemic A. fraseri had a greater response in carbon gain and water balance in response to cloud immersion. Climate models predict warmer temperatures with a decrease in the frequency of cloud immersion for this region, leading to an environment on these peaks similar to elevations where spruce–fir communities currently do not exist. Because spruce–fir communities may rely on cloud immersion for improved carbon gain and water conservation, an upslope shift is likely if cloud ceilings rise. Their ultimate survival will likely depend on the magnitude of changes in cloud regimes.  相似文献

In this study, the response of female rats in different phases of the estrus cycle to nociceptive stimulation was evaluated using thermal (hot plate and tail immersion) and chemical (formalin) tests. In the hot plate test, the paw licking latency fell significantly (p < 0.05) in the metestrus and diestrus phases compared with the proestrus and estrus phases. The observations in the tail immersion test also followed the same pattern. The significant reductions in the paw licking and tail withdrawal latencies due to a lowered threshold denote an increase in pain sensitivity in the metestrus and diestrus phases. In the formalin test, the licking time fell significantly from the metestrus to the diestrus phase compared with the proestrus and estrus phases, the reduction in this test which was due to an increased threshold connotes a decrease in pain sensitivity. The results therefore seem test dependent. In conclusion, pain threshold in female rats depends on the estrus state. Keywords: Pain threshold, Variation, Estrus cycle.  相似文献

The goals of the study were to test the hypotheses that ethyl alcohol (ETOH) in low-to-moderate doses would alter thermo-regulation and/or disrupt the normal relationship between physiological and psychophysical indexes of heat stress during 40 degrees C water immersion and to characterize the cardiovascular response to the combined stimuli of heat, water immersion, and ETOH. Six healthy men underwent three trials of 21 min of immersion in water at 40.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C after consuming 0, 0.27, or 0.54 g ETOH/kg. Esophageal temperature (Tes) rose by approximately 1.0 degrees C during immersion for each trial. Per unit of Tes rise, changes during immersion in skin temperature, sweat rate, heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and psychophysical assessments of comfort and overheating did not differ significantly by trial. Across trials, there was an apparent threshold for activation of thermoregulatory responses at an approximately 0.5 degrees C increase in Tes occurring after approximately 9 min of immersion. This threshold was identified psychophysically by increased ratings of overheating and decreased comfort. Above the threshold, there was an attenuation of the rate of increase of Tes. Cardiovascular stress was mild (rate-pressure product approximately 12,000) and not significantly increased by ETOH. Hypotension and tachycardia when subjects stood to exit the tub were observed. The data suggest that ETOH at the doses administered does not affect thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, or psychophysical indexes of heat stress during 40 degrees C water immersion.  相似文献

There are several types of cold adaptation based on the alteration of thermoregulatory response. It has been thought that the temperature of repeated cold exposures during the adaptation period is one of the factors affecting the type of cold adaptation developed. This study tested the hypothesis that repeated mild cold immersions would induce an insulative cold adaptation but would not alter the metabolic response. Seven healthy male participants were immersed to their xiphoid process level repeatedly in 26°C water for 60 min, 3 days every week, for 4 weeks. During the first and last exposure of this cold acclimation period, the participants underwent body immersion tests measuring their thermoregulatory responses to cold. Separately, they conducted finger immersion into 5°C water for 30 min to assess their cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) response before and after cold acclimation. During the immersion to xiphoid process, participants showed significantly lower mean skin temperature and skin blood flow in the forearm post-acclimation, while no adaptation was observed in the metabolic response. Additionally, blunted CIVD responses were observed after cold acclimation. From these results, it was considered that the participants showed an insulative-type of cold acclimation after the repeated mild cold immersions. The major finding of this study was the acceptance of the hypothesis that repeated mild cold immersion was sufficient to induce insulative cold adaptation but did not alter the metabolic response. It is suggested that the adaptation in the thermoregulatory response is specific to the response which is repeatedly stimulated during the adaptation process.  相似文献

The purpose was to assess whether body cooling between 2 bouts of exercise in the heat enhances performance during the second exercise session. Using a random, crossover design, 15 subjects (3 women, 12 men; 28 +/- 2 years, 180 +/- 2 cm, 69 +/- 2.3 kg) participated in all 3 trials. Subjects ran 90 minutes on hilly trails in a hot environment (approximately 27 degrees C) before 12 minutes of either cold water immersion (CWI; 13.98 degrees C), ice water immersion (IWI; 5.23 degrees C), or a mock treatment (MT) of sitting in a tub with no water (29.50 degrees C). After immersion, subjects ran a 2-mile race. CWI had faster (p < 0.05) performance time (725 seconds) than MT (769 seconds). CWI and IWI had significantly (p < 0.05) lower rectal temperatures postimmersion than MT as well as postrace (p < 0.05). Heart rate also remained significantly lower (p < 0.05) during the CWI and IWI trials for the first half of the race. In conclusion, CWI enhances performance (6% improvement in race time) in the second bout of exercise, supporting its potential role as an ergogenic aid in athletic performance.  相似文献
