Male promiscuity sometimes results in interspecific reproductive interaction, also known as reproductive interference. Reproductive interference entails costs for the individuals involved and affects the community structure by reducing the population growth rate. However, our understanding of the mechanisms generating reproductive interference is still insufficient. Two congeneric bean weevils, Callosobruchus chinensis and C. maculatus, show asymmetric reproductive interference; only C. chinensis males reduce the fecundity of the other species. Here we investigated the mechanism of reproductive interference by C. chinensis males on C. maculatus females in terms of lifetime fecundity. Callosobruchus chinensis males with ablated genitals, which could harass C. maculatus females but not copulate with them, did not reduce the C. maculatus fecundity, suggesting that interspecific copulation was necessary. However, a single interspecific copulation did not affect C. maculatus fecundity as long as the females also copulated with a conspecific male. Exposure to C. chinensis males for 24 h prior to oviposition significantly reduced C. maculatus fecundity, and fecundity was negatively correlated with the number of C. chinensis males the females were exposed to. Additionally, C. maculatus females experienced more interspecific copulations when they were housed with more C. chinensis males. Together these findings suggest that multiple interspecific copulations by C. chinensis males reduce the fecundity of C. maculatus females. Thus in general, even if a single interspecific copulation is apparently harmless, repeated interspecific copulations can be costly for the individuals involved. Furthermore, only by quantifying reproductive success were we able to identify the precise mechanism of reproductive interference.  相似文献

The extent of changes in basic physiological and demographic traits associated with reproduction was investigated in the highly cultivated haploid–diploid red alga, Gracilaria chilensis. Sixty individuals bearing vegetative and reproductive fronds collected in the natural population of Niebla (39°52′?S, 73°23′?W), in Chile, were cultivated under controlled culture conditions. Our results demonstrated that vegetative fronds have a higher survival rate and a better growth rate than reproductive ones irrespective of the type of individual analyzed (male gametophyte, female gametophyte, and tetrasporophyte). Moreover, the reproductive fronds clearly showed a decrease in photosynthetic activity compared to non-reproductive ones. In males and tetrasporophytes, the photosynthetic reduction in reproductive individuals could be explained by a physical effect of reproductive structure development as well as spores release, disrupting the continuity of the photosynthetic cortical tissues. Translocation of photoassimilates from nearby vegetative tissue or the previous accumulation of photosynthetic products seems to be a prerequisite for reproductive structure development in this species. Altogether, these results document for the first time in G. chilensis that reproduction has a strong physiological effect on male, female, and tetrasporophyte fronds. This trade-off between reproduction, growth, and survival suggest the existence of reproductive costs in the life history of G. chilensis.  相似文献

Understanding processes that contribute to population maintenance is critical to the management and conservation of species. Despite this, very little is currently known about the reproductive biology of Great Barrier Reef (GBR) sponge species. Here, we established reproductive parameters including mode of sexuality and development, seasonality, sex ratios, gametogenesis, reproductive output, and size at sexual maturity for the common phototrophic intertidal sponge, Carteriospongia foliascens, in the central GBR over two reproductive cycles. A population sexual productivity index (PoSPi) integrating key reproductive parameters was formulated to compare population larval supply over time. This study shows that C. foliascens is reproductive all year round, gonochoric and viviparous, with larvae developing asynchronously throughout the mesohyl. The influence of environmental parameters relevant to C. foliascens reproduction [i.e., sea surface temperature (SST), photoperiod, and rainfall] was also examined, and SST was found to have the most significant effect on phenology. C. foliascens reproduction exhibited annual mono-cyclic patterns closely resembling SST fluctuations. Reproductive output was depressed at low SST (<23 °C) and increased at temperatures above 23 °C. Peak sperm release occurred at temperatures above 25 °C, while peak larval release occurred during the annual temperature maxima (>28 °C). A twofold increase in maximum larval production (PoSPi) in C. foliascens was observed in the second reproductive cycle, following a depressed PoSPi in the first cycle. This reduction in PoSPi in the first reproductive cycle was associated with elevated SST and rainfall, coinciding with one of the strongest La Niña events on record.  相似文献

The insect Rhodnius prolixus is responsible for the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, which is the etiological agent of Chagas disease in areas of Central and South America. Besides this, it can be infected by other trypanosomes such as Trypanosoma rangeli. The effects of these parasites on vectors are poorly understood and are often controversial so here we focussed on possible negative effects of these parasites on the reproductive performance of R. prolixus, specifically comparing infected and uninfected couples. While T. cruzi infection did not delay pre-oviposition time of infected couples at either temperature tested (25 and 30°C) it did, at 25°C, increase the e-value in the second reproductive cycle, as well as hatching rates. Meanwhile, at 30°C, T. cruzi infection decreased the e-value of insects during the first cycle and also the fertility of older insects. When couples were instead infected with T. rangeli, pre-oviposition time was delayed, while reductions in the e-value and hatching rate were observed in the second and third cycles. We conclude that both T. cruzi and T. rangeli can impair reproductive performance of R. prolixus, although for T. cruzi, this is dependent on rearing temperature and insect age. We discuss these reproductive costs in terms of potential consequences on triatomine behavior and survival.  相似文献

Whole-organism performance of ectotherms depends on body temperature, which is tightly linked to environmental temperatures. Individuals attempting to optimize fitness must thus select appropriate temperatures. The thermal coadaptation hypothesis posits that To for traits closely linked to fitness should match temperatures selected by a species (Tset) and should coevolve with Tset. To may mismatch Tset if the thermal reaction norm for fitness is asymmetric. In this study, we examined six traits related to fitness in red and in confused flour beetles (Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum, respectively), including longevity, lifetime reproductive success, reproductive rate, and development time at four temperatures between 23 and 32 °C. For reproductive traits, To matched Tset whereas for longevity To was lower than Tset. Tribolium species have a strongly r-selected life history strategy, therefore reproductive traits are likely more tightly linked to fitness than longevity due to high predation rates at early life stages. We therefore provide support for the thermal coadaptation hypothesis for reproductive traits that are tightly linked to fitness. Our results highlight the importance of knowing the relationships of traits to fitness when studying thermal physiology.  相似文献

Evolutionary models estimating phenotypic selection in character size usually assume that the character is invariant across reproductive bouts. We show that variation in the size of reproductive traits may be large over multiple events and can influence fitness in organisms where these traits are produced anew each season. With data from populations of two orchid species, Caladenia valida and Tolumnia variegata, we used Bayesian statistics to investigate the effect on the distribution in fitness of individuals when the fitness landscape is not flat and when characters vary across reproductive bouts. Inconsistency in character size across reproductive periods within an individual increases the uncertainty of mean fitness and, consequently, the uncertainty in individual fitness. The trajectory of selection is likely to be muddled as a consequence of variation in morphology of individuals across reproductive bouts. The frequency and amplitude of such changes will certainly affect the dynamics between selection and genetic drift.  相似文献

Numerous species of diatoms liberate oxylipins including polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) in response to cellular damage such as may occur during grazing. PUAs are cyto- and genotoxic and negatively disrupt reproductive processes in copepods, their principal grazers, although experimental evidence would suggest that the grazer response may be species specific. The reproduction of the benthic harpacticoid copepod Tisbe holothuriae was compared over two generations. Copepods were reared using four diet treatments: PUA-producing diatom strains Skeletonema marinoi (Adriatic Sea Isolate FE6) and Melosira nummuloides (CCAP 1048/6); and non-PUA-producing diatom strains Phaeodactylum tricornutum (CCAP 1052/A) and S. marinoi (Seasalter (Walney) Ltd). Life tables were generated for each treatment using measured reproductive parameters and the net reproductive rate (R0) calculated. No significant differences were observed between the individual reproductive parameters of T. holothuriae fed PUA-producing diatoms compared to those fed non-PUA-producing diatoms although diets of P. tricornutum resulted in some decreases in individual reproductive parameters in the second generation. There were no significant differences in the R0 values between the four tested diets. These observations indicate that T. holothuriae exhibits a tolerance of known PUA-producing diatom diets that has not been similarly demonstrated in pelagic calanoid copepods. Harpacticoid copepods may have a greater capacity to detoxify diatom oxylipins than their planktonic calanoid counterparts.  相似文献

The fitness of any organisms includes the survival and reproductive rate of adults and the survival of their offspring. Environmental selection pressures might not affect these two aspects of an organism equally. Assuming that an organism first allocates its limited resources to maintain its survival under environmental selection pressure, our model, based on the evolutionarily stable strategy theory, surprisingly shows that the sex ratio is greatly affected by the environmental pressure intensity and by the reproductive resource elasticity of offspring survival. Moreover, the concept of the resource elasticity of offspring survival intrinsically integrates the ecological concepts of K selection and r selection. The model shows that in a species with reproductive strategy K, increased environmental selection pressure will reduce resource allocation to the male function. By contrast, in a species with reproductive strategy r, harsher environmental selection pressure will increase allocation to the male function. The elasticity of offspring survival might vary not only across species, but also across many other factors affecting the same species (e.g., age structure, spatial heterogeneity), which explains sex ratio differences across species or age structures and spatial heterogeneity in the same species.  相似文献

Bone metabolism fluctuates throughout the reproductive cycle of sows to enable foetal growth and milk production. Although increased bone mineralisation is conceivable in sows during reproduction, a study of mineralisation in function of parity has not been performed. This study evaluated the fluctuations of markers for bone metabolism in primiparous and multiparous sows throughout a reproductive cycle. The experiment included ten multiparous and five primiparous commercial hybrid sows from one herd. The sows were monitored for one reproductive cycle and fed according to commercial dietary standards. Blood samples were taken in the morning before feeding at fixed time intervals before (day -5) and during gestation (insemination (day 0), 21, 42, 63, 84), around parturition (day 108, 112, parturition (115), 118), and during lactation (day 122, 129, 143). Serum osteocalcin (OC) concentration increased in early and mid-gestation (P=0.002) and decreased at the end of gestation (P=0.001), whereas crosslaps (CTX) concentration decreased during early and mid-gestation (P=0.002) and increased towards the end of gestation (P=0.001). Towards the end of lactation serum levels of both markers increased (P=0.007 and 0.013, respectively). For hydroxyproline (HYP) no significant fluctuation in function of the reproductive cycle was detected. Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) concentration increased towards parturition for both primiparous and multiparous sows (P=0.001), whereas during lactation no significant fluctuations in function of the reproductive cycle were found. A parity effect was found for OC and CTX (P<0.010), but not for the other markers. These results demonstrate that bone metabolism differed between primiparous and multiparous sows, although in both groups a similar fluctuation throughout the reproductive cycle was observed.  相似文献

Background and AimsPlant individuals within a population differ in their phenology and interactions with pollinators. However, it is still unknown how individual differences affect the reproductive success of plants that have functionally specialized pollination systems. Here, we evaluated whether plant individual specialization in phenology (temporal specialization) and in pollination (pollinator specialization) affect the reproductive success of the crepuscular-bee-pollinated plant Trembleya laniflora (Melastomataceae).MethodsWe quantified flowering activity (amplitude, duration and overlap), plant–pollinator interactions (number of flowers visited by pollinators) and reproductive success (fruit set) of T. laniflora individuals from three distinct locations in rupestrian grasslands of southeastern Brazil. We estimated the degree of individual temporal specialization in flowering phenology and of individual specialization in plant–pollinator interactions, and tested their relationship with plant reproductive success.Key Results Trembleya laniflora presented overlapping flowering, a temporal generalization and specialized pollinator interactions. Flowering overlap among individuals and populations was higher than expected by chance but did not affect the individual interactions with pollinators and nor their reproductive success. In contrast, higher individual generalization in the interactions with pollinators was related to higher individual reproductive success.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that individual generalization in plant–pollinator interaction reduces the potential costs of specialization at the species level, ensuring reproductive success. Altogether, our results highlight the complexity of specialization/generalization of plant–pollinator interactions at distinct levels of organization, from individuals to populations, to species.  相似文献

Diatoms that produce toxic oxylipins can be detrimental to the reproductive success of aquatic invertebrates. Despite the potential importance of these toxins in shaping aquatic ecosystems, marine studies to date have focused almost exclusively on planktonic calanoid copepods. The current work examines the response of the benthic harpacticoid copepod, Tisbe holothuriae, to direct exposure to diatom-derived oxylipins and the short-term impact of oxylipin-producing diatom diets on reproductive success. The most toxic oxylipin was the polyunsaturated aldehyde (PUA) 2E,4E-decadienal with an LD50 of 9.3 μM for T. holothuriae nauplii. The least tolerant life-stage was the nauplius followed by adult males then adult females. Short-term exposure to PUA-producing diatoms (Skeletonema marinoi and Melosira nummuloides) in maternal diets had no significant impact on reproductive success compared with non-PUA-producing diets (Skeletonema costatum, Navicula hanseni, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Tetraselmis suecica). The PUA producers had no negative impact on the survival and development of naupliar stages to adulthood. T. holothuriae expresses a higher degree of tolerance to PUA-producing diatoms than many planktonic calanoids, possibly reflecting a degree of adaptation to higher stress levels associated with the benthos. This is the first study to investigate the reproductive responses of harpacticoid copepods feeding on known PUA-producing diatoms.  相似文献

The influence of floral display on male and female reproductive success is variable without consistent patterns. Few studies concentrate on the integrated influence of the different components of floral display on reproductive fitness at population level. We studied the impact of different components of floral display on reproductive success in the Chinese orchid Phaius delavayi. This deceptive orchid has flowers in which male and female success can be readily assessed in the field by observing rates of pollinarium removal and fruit initiation. The results showed that mean pollinarium removal (52.05?±?2.08%) was higher than fruit set (36.78?±?1.89%), and both male and female reproductive success decreased with increasing clump size in Phaius delavayi. Nevertheless, floral display expressed by clump size and flower position impacted both female and male reproductive success, whereas flowering initiation and duration, and inflorescence size had no effect.  相似文献

We provide a size-based ontogenetic sequence of the development and differentiation of the lower reproductive tract of the heterobranch gastropod Helix aspersa (Müller 1774). Twelve development stages distributed among nine size classes were recognized based on readily visible changes in morphology and changes in tissue density. Geometric morphometrics was used to calculate the deformation between stages as represented by thin-plate spline bending energies. The developmental stages and sequence of developmental events are also compared to previously published scenarios for the evolution of stylommatophoran and other pulmonate reproductive tracts. These comparisons suggest that heterochronies, which include both acceleration and retardation, are operating in the morphological evolution of the pulmonate lower reproductive tract. This supports previous observations that largest number of developmental changes coincides with the transition to sexual maturity, which is also seen in the exponential curve of bending energies we observed in Helix aspersa. The belated organogenesis makes the ontogeny of the complex hermaphroditic reproductive system of pulmonates readily observable in size-friendly juveniles. This observation, coupled with the ease of raising individuals in the laboratory, recommends Helix aspersa as a potential model laboratory system for investigating molluscan evolutionary development.  相似文献

The impacts of exotic plants on the pollination and reproductive success of natives have been widely reported; however, in spite of its importance for the invasive process, the role of native plants in the pollination and reproduction of exotic plants has been less explored. To fill this gap, we compared the patterns of pollination and reproductive success in the invasive herb Echium vulgare (Boraginaceae) between monospecific patches (only E. vulgare) and mixed patches (sympatry with native herbs Schizanthus hookeri and Stachys albicaulis) in central Chile. Using sample quadrats of 1 m × 2 m, we quantified the richness, diversity and visitation rate of flower visitors in 15-min observation intervals. We conducted an assay to assess the effect of the patch types (monospecific and mixed) and the isolation of flowers to visitors on both the fruit set and seed/ovule ratio. We showed that native plants favoured the richness of visitors of E. vulgare; however, they did not lead to increases in visitation rate. The reproductive success of E. vulgare did not show differences between contrasted patches; however, the isolation of visitors decreased the fruit set, although seed production was maintained in the absence of pollinators, presumably by an autogamous mechanism. Complementary to our main research focus, we assessed changes in pollination variables and reproductive output in two coflowering native plants that occur with E. vulgare, S. hookeri and S. albicaulis. Despite the fact that our correlational study did not allow us to dissect the effects of mixed patches and relative plant abundances on variables measured for natives, we observed an increase in pollinator richness in mixed patches for the two plants studied. These results suggest a potential facilitation for visitor richness of the exotic plant in coexistence with native plants, although this facilitation does not result in changes in the visit rate or on the reproductive success of any of the studied species. This work underlines the need for additional research on community levels that assess reciprocal effects on pollination between coflowering natives and exotics.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation decreases plant population sizes and increases spatial isolation, which hampers the exchange of seeds and pollen between fragmented populations. This may result in decreased population viability. We compared the effects of population size and isolation on the reproductive success of two orchid species, Gymnadenia conopsea (nectar-producing) and Orchis mascula (nectarless) growing in highly fragmented calcareous grassland in southern Belgium. We expected that the nectar-producing species would be more susceptible to the negative reproductive consequences of habitat fragmentation compared to the nectarless species. Nectar production has been associated with increased geitonogamous pollination and, therefore, with lower seed viability. Our results show that seed viability increased with increasing population size in O. mascula, whereas it was always low in G. conopsea, even in large populations. In contrast, percentage fruit set was positively related to population size in the nectar-producing G. conopsea, but no such effect was observed in the nectarless O. mascula, where fruit set was low even in large populations. Population isolation was not related to reproductive success for either species. Our results suggest that even in large populations, where pollinators are expected to be more abundant, increased geitonogamous pollination reduces seed viability in the nectar-producing G. conopsea. In contrast, seed viability in O. mascula seems to benefit from increased pollinator availability in larger populations. For the latter species, however, fruit set remains low, even in large populations, compared to G. conopsea. This may be explained by the relatively low attractiveness of nectarless orchid species for pollinators. Our results indicate that small population size may negatively influence reproductive success in both nectarless and nectar-producing orchids by reducing seed viability and fruit set, respectively.  相似文献
