Arabidopsis development proceeds from three stem cell populations located at the shoot, flower, and root meristems. The relationship between the highly related shoot and flower stem cells and the very divergent root stem cells has been unclear. We show that the related phosphatases POL and PLL1 are required for all three stem cell populations. pol pll1 mutant embryos lack key asymmetric divisions that give rise to the root stem cell organizer and the central vascular axis. Instead, these cells divide in a superficially symmetric fashion in pol pll1 embryos, leading to a loss of embryonic and postembryonic root stem cells and vascular specification. We present data that show that POL/PLL1 drive root stem cell specification by promoting expression of the WUS homolog WOX5. We propose that POL and PLL1 are required for the proper divisions of shoot, flower, and root stem cell organizers, WUS/WOX5 gene expression, and stem cell maintenance.  相似文献

Populus euramericana (Dode) Guinier cv. Robusta plants were cultivated at irradiances of 7.5, 15 and 30 W m−2 (32.5, 65 and 130 μmol m2 s−1), 400–700 nm at 22°C and a relative humidity between 40 and 60% on a gravel culture subirrigated with Hoagland's nutrient solution. The basal diameter of the growing shoot, a measure of the number of apical cells participating in growth, increased proportionally to irradiance and was correlated with mature leaf length. The development of the length of the growing shoot (Lgs) depended also on the nutritional status of the (young) shoot. Lgs was strongly correlated with the rate of height growth.  相似文献

Sunflower, Helianthus annuus L. cv. INRA 6501, plants were grown in a gravel culture subirrigated with Hoagland nutrient solution, at photosynthetically active radiation levels of 15, 30 and 60 W m-2 at a daylength of 16 h, a temperature of 20°C and a relative humidity of 60% throughout. Development of the plant and growth of the leaves were measured. High irradiance accelerated development proportionally in all phases from germination, through leaf initiation, primordial flower formation and the maturation of all plant organs until anthesis. High irradiance levels stimulated the expansion of the growing shoot, which produced more and larger primordia. Under constant conditions the ratio between leaf initiation rate and mature length of a leaf remained constant, although the growth patterns [relationship between relative growth rate (RGR) and organ age] of successive leaves were not similar. Consequently, it may be assumed that, as in poplar, the increasing size of the growing shoot reflects the increase of the vascular system of sunflower. The growth patterns of the leaves depend on the developmental stage of the plant and, in the young primordial stage, also on irradiance level. In the linear phase of growth the growth pattern is independent of irradiance level.  相似文献

Background and Aims The arrangement of flowers in inflorescence shoots of Arabidopsis thaliana represents a regular spiral Fibonacci phyllotaxis. However, in the cuc2 cuc3 double mutant, flower pedicels are fused to the inflorescence stem, and phyllotaxis is aberrant in the mature shoot regions. This study examined the causes of this altered development, and in particular whether the mutant phenotype is a consequence of defects at the shoot apex, or whether post-meristematic events are involved.Methods The distribution of flower pedicels and vascular traces was examined in cross-sections of mature shoots; sequential replicas were used to investigate the phyllotaxis and geometry of shoot apices, and growth of the young stem surface. The expression pattern of CUC3 was analysed by examining its promoter activity.Key Results Phyllotaxis irregularity in the cuc2 cuc3 double mutant arises during the post-meristematic phase of shoot development. In particular, growth and cell divisions in nodes of the elongating stem are not restricted in the mutant, resulting in pedicel–stem fusion. On the other hand, phyllotaxis in the mutant shoot apex is nearly as regular as that of the wild type. Vascular phyllotaxis, generated almost simultaneously with the phyllotaxis at the apex, is also much more regular than pedicel phyllotaxis. The most apparent phenotype of the mutant apices is a higher number of contact parastichies. This phenotype is associated with increased meristem size, decreased angular width of primordia and a shorter plastochron. In addition, the appearance of a sharp and deep crease, a characteristic shape of the adaxial primordium boundary, is slightly delayed and reduced in the mutant shoot apices.Conclusions The cuc2 cuc3 double mutant displays irregular phyllotaxis in the mature shoot but not in the shoot apex, thus showing a post-meristematic effect of the mutations on phyllotaxis. The main cause of this effect is the formation of pedicel–stem fusions, leading to an alteration of the axial positioning of flowers. Phyllotaxis based on the position of vascular flower traces suggests an additional mechanism of post-meristematic phyllotaxis alteration. Higher density of flower primordia may be involved in the post-meristematic effect on phyllotaxis, whereas delayed crease formation may be involved in the fusion phenotype. Promoter activity of CUC3 is consistent with its post-meristematic role in phyllotaxis.  相似文献

The grapevine inflorescence is a determinate panicle and as buds emerge, shoot, flower and rachis development occur simultaneously. The growth and architecture of the rachis is determined by genetic and environmental factors but here we examined the role of flower and leaf number as well as hormones on its elongation and vascular development. The consequences of rachis morphology and vascular area on berry size and composition were also assessed. One week prior to anthesis, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon field vines were exposed to manual flower removal, exogenous plant growth regulators or pre-bloom leaf removal. Manual removal of half the flowers along the vertical axis of the inflorescence resulted in a shorter rachis in both cultivars. Conversely, inflorescences treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) and the synthetic cytokinin, 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) resulted in a longer rachis while pre-bloom removal of all leaves on the inflorescence-bearing shoot did not alter rachis length relative to untreated inflorescences. Across the treatments, the cross-sectional areas of the conducting xylem and phloem in the rachis were positively correlated to rachis girth, flower number at anthesis, bunch berry number, bunch berry fresh mass and bunch sugar content at harvest. Conversely, average berry size and sugar content were not linked to rachis vascular area. These data indicate that the morphological and vascular development of the rachis was more responsive to flower number and plant growth regulators than to leaf removal.  相似文献

Shoot Growth and Mortality Patterns of Urtica dioica, a Clonal Forb   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The growth and mortality patterns of the clonal forb Urticadioica were investigated at the level of the individual shootin two growing seasons, 1991 and 1992, in a natural stand. Shootheight and diameter at ground level of each shoot tagged inspring were measured repeatedly five times during the growingseason. Dry weights of these repeatedly measured shoots wereestimated using an allometric relationship between dry weight,height and diameter of harvested shoots. A large decrease inshoot density occurred with stand development from the beginningof the growing season in both the years: (1) shoot survivalrate was about 30% at the end of the growing season; (2) shootmortality rate per 10 x 10 cm subplot between censuses was positivelydependent on shoot density per subplot; (3) the mortality rateof individual shoots was negatively dependent on shoot size(height, diameter and weight) at each growing stage, suggestingone-sided competition between living and dying shoots; (4) shootsize (height, diameter and weight) variability in terms of thecoefficient of variation and skewness decreased in accordancewith shoot mortality. Symmetric competition between living shootswas detected by regression analysis based on a model for individualshoot growth considering the degree of competitive asymmetry.However, the competitive effect on individual shoot growth wasvery small (nearly absent). The mortality pattern of Urticadioica indicates that shoot self-thinning occurred from theearly growing stage as in non-clonal crowded monospecific stands,and contrasts with many clonal plants where shoot self-thinningrarely occurs or, if any, is confined only to a short periodof the later growing stage. The pattern of growth and competitionbetween living shoots of Urtica dioica contrasts with non-clonalcrowded plants undergoing intense competition (usually asymmetric)between individuals, but is a common feature of many clonalplants where shoot competition is supposed to be reduced by'physiological integration' between shoots. These form a newpattern not reported yet for clonal plants. It is pointed outthat clonal plants show a wider spectrum of the growth, competitionand mortality patterns of shoots than non-clonals. Every other week over their second growing season, stem height, collar diameter, shoot and root dry masses, number of lateral roots and length of the tap root were measured on nursery grown seedlings ofAbies balsamea L. Mill.,Pinus banksiana Lamb.,Pinus resinosa Ait.,Picea mariana Mill. BSP andPicea glauca Moench Voss. Root elongation, branching and mycorrhizal development were also recorded.Given species showed distinct seasonal growth patterns. The rate and timing of maximum root growth (mg/dry weight/week) differed markedly between species.Except for the increase in height ofPinus banksiana, root and shoot growth were not negatively correlated.The results are discussed in relation to the performance of tree seedlings in the nursery.  相似文献

以切花菊品种‘神马’(Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat ‘Jinba’)为试材,于2010-2011年设计不同红光(R: (660 ±10) nm)与远红光(FR: (730±10)nm)比值(R/FR分别为0.5、2.5、4.5、6.5)的LED灯照射处理,研究不同R/FR值对温室切花菊形态指标、叶面积形成及干物质分配的影响。结果显示R/FR=2.5处理的植株叶片数、株高、茎粗、花径、叶面积及总干重均为各个处理中最高,R/FR=0.5处理的节间最长。所有R/FR处理的单株地上干物质重量与光质处理天数呈指数-线性模型。随处理天数的增加不同R/FR值处理菊花植株地上部分及地下部分干物质分配指数差异均不显著,叶片和花的干物质分配指数随处理天数的增加分别呈降低和升高的趋势,茎干物质分配指数则呈现先升高后降低的趋势,R/FR=2.5处理下,菊花叶片干物质分配指数和花干物质分配指数最高,而茎干物质分配指数却为最低;R/FR=6.5处理茎干物质分配指数最高,叶片干物质分配指数最低;0.5处理花朵干物质分配指数最低,说明远红光比例增加能够促进干物质向茎中分配,R/FR=2.5处理利于干物质向花朵中分配。  相似文献

以赤子爱胜蚓(Eisenia foetida)处理混合比例为1∶1、2∶1、3∶1、4∶1、5∶1和1∶0的污泥和牛粪得到污泥蚯蚓粪,并以10%、20%和30%(干物质量)与黑土混合,研究其对万寿菊株高、茎粗、叶片数、分枝数、地上部生物量、地下部生物量、根冠比、花蕾数、产花量、花直径和花生物量等生长发育指标的影响.结果表明:蚯蚓粪明显促进了万寿菊的生长发育;污泥和牛粪比值越小,对植物生长发育越有利;蚯蚓粪含量超过一定量,万寿菊生长发育状况有所下降,20%配比处理对万寿菊生长发育最为有利.  相似文献

Topophysis, the effect on growth and differentiation of positionof axillary buds along the shoot, was studied by propagatingfive-leaflet-leaf single-node cuttings which were excised fromseven stem positions and grown as single stemmed plants. InRosahybrida ‘Korokis’ Kiss®, ‘Tanettahn’Manhattan Blue®, and ‘Sweet Promise’ Sonia®,following release of the buds from apical dominance by excision,morphogenetic development was studied until anthesis. The timefrom excision/planting until onset of bud growth, visible flowerbud appearance, and anthesis was generally shorter in plantsoriginating from apical bud positions than from basipetal positions.Topophysis mainly affected the onset of axillary bud growth;the earliest growth and development was found in cuttings fromthe second uppermost node position. This node tended to havethe lowest plastochron value, which indicated the existenceof a transition between sylleptic and proleptic buds. Stem lengthat visible flower bud and at anthesis generally increased asthe cutting position changed basipetally until the second lowestposition, and the number of five-leaflet-leaves at anthesisand the total number of nodes generally increased basipetally.For internode length, growth rate, and fresh biomass efficiencythe cuttings taken from the uppermost and lowermost positionsgenerally had significantly lower values than cuttings fromall medial positions. At anthesis, plants originating from cuttingsexcised from lower medial positions generally had a higher freshweight, greater flower stem diameter, and a significantly higherspecific fresh weight than those plants originating from apicalor basal positions. Among the cultivars, Sonia was the mostefficient in increasing fresh biomass and had the highest growthrate, whereas Manhattan Blue possessed the highest specificfresh weight, indicating a higher plant quality. In the present study the seasonal patterns of time lags between diurnal xylem and whole stem diameter variations at the top and at the base of two Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) were compared. The diameter variations were measured during the summers of 2001 and 2002. Time lags were determined using the cross‐correlation method. The lags were found to vary in time according to the different stages of growth. At the top the xylem lagged behind the whole stem between the beginning of stem growth and the end of shoot growth in both years. In 2001 the time lags at the base showed a similar behaviour during stem growth. That kind of seasonal pattern of the time lags would result from the changes in the sink strength due to changing growth rate at different parts of the tree and the differences in the annual rhythm of growth and water availability in the soil (based on precipitation measurements) between the years 2001 and 2002 were reflected in the patterns. The time lags of shrinking and swelling periods during high and low photosynthetic activity (measured using a shoot chamber) were also compared. It was found, for example, that in 2001 in the middle of the growing season at the top of the tree the whole stem lagged on average 15 min more behind the xylem on the days of high photosynthetic activity than on the days of low or moderate. These results show for the first time that the transportation of carbohydrates and variable sink activity could be detected during the growing season in field conditions using stem and xylem diameter variation measurements. Furthermore, these results provide evidence of the pressure gradient‐driven flow also in the phloem of gymnosperms.  相似文献

Experiments with annual and biennial beet cultivars showed that considerable stem extension accompanied by axillary bud development was induced by gibberellic acid treatment at a rate of 0·4 mg/wk. These plants did not flower. Such axillary buds were excised and rooted readily, making possible clonal propagation. On the termination of hormone application plants re-rosetted and thick swollen stems with multiple cambium development formed below the new crown on both terminal and axillary growing points. This suggests that secondary cambium formation and swelling is controlled by the shoot and may possibly be due to some factor antagonistic to gibberellin, emanating from the crown.  相似文献

Impatiens balsamina L. was induced to flower by exposure to5 short days and then made to revert to vegetative growth byreturn to long days. After 9 long days reverted plants wereinduced to re-flower by returning them to short days. Petalinitiation began immediately and seven primordia already presentdeveloped into petals instead of into predominantly leaf-likeorgans. However, the arrangement of primordia at the shoot apex,their rate of initiation and size at initiation remained unchangedfrom the reverted apex, as did apical growth rate and the lengthof stem frusta at initiation. The more rapid flowering of thereverted plants than of plants when first induced, and the lackof change in apical growth pattern, imply that the revertedapices remain partially evoked, and that the apical growth patternand phyllotaxis typical of the flower, and already present inthe reverted plants, facilitate the transition to flower formation. Free, esterified and glycosylated sterols were analysed separately from the shoot apices, leaves, leaf sheaths and stems of Lolium temulentum L. (strain Ceres) plants during floral development. Short-day grown plants (50 days old) were induced to flower by exposure to a single long day. The four major sterols found by GC-MS analysis were sitosterol, cholesterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. The sterol levels in the shoot apex were much higher than those in the leaf, leaf sheath and stem. A much greater proportion of cholesterol was found in the shoot apex than in other tissues and this may reflect a specific association of cholesterol with meristematic and/or reproductive tissues.
During the inductive treatment, the sterol levels decreased in all four tissues. The major effect during early differentiation was the occurrence of transient increases in the free and esterified sterol levels in the leaf and the stem tissues. The steryl ester content peaked 24 h before the appearance of double ridges, followed by a peak in free sterol content at the double ridge stage. Similar changes could not be detected in the shoot apices. This is the first report of the sterol composition of developing shoot apices, and the results emphasize the dynamic nature of sterol metabolism during reproductive growth of L. temulentum.  相似文献

Flower induction in apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees plays an important life cycle role, but young trees produce fewer and inferior quality flower buds. Therefore, shoot bending has become an important cultural practice, significantly promoting the capacity to develop more flower buds during the growing seasons. Additionally, microRNAs (miRNAs) play essential roles in plant growth, flower induction and stress responses. In this study, we identified miRNAs potentially involved in the regulation of bud growth, and flower induction and development, as well as in the response to shoot bending. Of the 195 miRNAs identified, 137 were novel miRNAs. The miRNA expression profiles revealed that the expression levels of 68 and 27 known miRNAs were down‐regulated and up‐regulated, respectively, in response to shoot bending, and that the 31 differentially expressed novel miRNAs between them formed five major clusters. Additionally, a complex regulatory network associated with auxin, cytokinin, abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellic acid (GA) plays important roles in cell division, bud growth and flower induction, in which related miRNAs and targets mediated regulation. Among them, miR396, 160, 393, and their targets associated with AUX, miR159, 319, 164, and their targets associated with ABA and GA, and flowering‐related miRNAs and genes, regulate bud growth and flower bud formation in response to shoot bending. Meanwhile, the flowering genes had significantly higher expression levels during shoot bending, suggesting that they are involved in this regulatory process. This study provides a framework for the future analysis of miRNAs associated with multiple hormones and their roles in the regulation of bud growth, and flower induction and formation in response to shoot bending in apple trees.  相似文献

Decapitation of the pea plant resulted in the growth of all the lateral shoots. The initial growth of all lateral buds was somewhat similar. The differential growth rates developed later on. The pattern of growth of lateral shoots varied with the age of the plant when decapitation was performed. The basal shoots dominated when the plants were decapitated at the 2-leaf stage. At 3-leaf stage decapitation resulted in the dominance of shoot 5. Decapitation at 4-or-more-leaf stage resulted in the eventual dominance of the suhterminal lateral shoot. As a rule P-32 moved to the most actively growing part of the plant, i.e. apex in intact vegetative plant, the growing lateral shoots in a decapitated plant, the elongating subapical parts of the stem and the roots. The various metabolic sinks seemed to compete actively for this nutrient, therefore P-32 accumulation in any particular growing region of the plant was taken as an indicator of nutrient utilization potential of that part. The stem apex of an intact plant seemed to loose its dominance with the increasing age of the plant. The loss of apical dominance was almost complete during the reproductive phase of the plant, during which the upper lateral shoots initiated growth. Their growth, however, was inhibited soon because of competition with the other developing sinks, viz., the flower and the fruit. The amount of soluble carbohydrates in various parts of the pea plant followed essentially the same pattern as did P-32 accumulation. These distribution patterns were apparently correlated with the growth of the plant.  相似文献

The growth retardants chlorphonium chloride, daminozide anda new, quaternary ammonium compound, piproctanyl bromide, allreduced shoot length and delayed the time of flowering of thepot chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat) cv. BrightGolden Anne grown throughout in short days. The retardants delayedflowering by reducing the rate of flower bud development andnot by influencing bud initiation. In the case of chlorphoniumchloride and daminozide, a single dose of 20 or 40 µggibberellic acid (GA) completely overcame the effects on bothstem length and flowering, whereas when piproctanyl bromidehad been applied GA did not always bring about a total reversal.Responses to GA were recorded a few days after its application.Neither the retardants nor Ga altered leaf number. Only whenpiproctanyl bromide was the retardant did indol-3-ylacetic acidproduce a small but significant increase in stem length at flowering. The results are consistent with a theory of retardant actionin which gibberellins play the dominant role and strongly suggestthat these hormones are a major factor influencing both stemextension and the rate of flower-bud development in the chrysanthemum.They may promote flower development and thus hasten floweringby attracting assimilates to these organs. Flower bud development in Rosa hybrida cv. 'Mercedes' was studied in shoots grown at different irradiances and sprouting from axillary buds at different branch positions. Cryo-scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy were used to visualize, characterize and determine flower morphogenesis during early shoot development. Up to the moment of visible flower bud appearance on the plant, flower morphogenesis was divided into nine stages. This classification was based on external and internal characteristics of the primordium. All shoots of the rose 'Mercedes' whether positioned uppermost or second on a branch and whether grown at 300 or 150 μmol m-2 s-1 PAR (12 h d-1) developed equally up to flower stage 7, i.e. the stage just before visible initiation of stamen and pistils. Signs of flower bud abortion were the compactness of the flower bud at developmental stage 7 (height/width < 1·5) and the sprouting of axillary buds positioned just below the flower bud primordium. It was concluded that once a flower bud has reached a height to width ratio larger than 1·5, and once stamen and pistil developmental has started, it has passed the critical developmental stage in which abortion may occur. Flower developmental stage was closely related to shoot length. This relationship was not affected by irradiance level nor by shoot position on a branch. Therefore, cultivation treatments aimed to improve flower production by reducing flower abortion, such as supplementary lighting, will be most effective when applied during the first 2 weeks of shoot growth in which the flower develops up to stage 7.  相似文献

采用实验生态学的方法研究了外界支持直径变化对苦瓜植株生长和觅食行为的影响。结果表明,支持物直径变化对主茎节间、叶片、叶柄和卷须的发育进程无明显影响。苦瓜植株的攀援生长显著受到支持物直径大小的影响,当支持物直径小于8mm时,植株能较好地自主攀援生长。生长于直径支持物上的植株比生长于小直径支持物上的植株表现出较高的分枝率、较短的主茎、较长的分枝、较大的比茎长和比叶柄长。相关分析表明,节间长度和叶柄长度同植株自主攀援程度成显著正相关关系,而单叶面积、分枝数量和比叶柄长同植株自主攀援程度成显著负相关关系。作为攀援植物的一种重要资源,外界支持物的特征和存在状况将对植物的生长和行为产生重要影响。  相似文献

 采用实验生态学的方法,在提供不同直径支持物的情况下,对攀援植物苦瓜(Momordica charantia)不同构件层次的形态可塑性反应、生物量积累和生物量配置的变化进行了研究。结果表明:1)支持物直径对植株分枝出现的时机无明显影响,但分枝数量和分枝在主茎上的着生位置受支持物直径影响较大;2)植株个体水平比分枝水平对支持物直径的变化有更灵敏的反应,当支持物直径较大时,植株个体表现出对支持物较强的寻觅能力:主茎伸长受阻,比茎长变大,分枝数量和分枝率增大,分枝长度增加,比叶柄长度增加,根冠比减小;3)分枝形态特征和生物量特征对支持物直径的变化均无显著反应;4)苦瓜植株个体水平上的形态特征变化、生物量配置格局的改变以及分枝行为的变化是植株对支持物有效性变化的响应,有利于增强植株“寻觅”支持物的能力。  相似文献
