Infant development and parental care in two species of sifakas   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This paper reports the results of a three-month field study on parental care and infant development in the diademed sifaka (Propithecus diadema edwardsi) in the primary rain-forest of south-eastern Madagascar. They are compared with a three-and-a-half-month study of captive white sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi coquereli) in the Duke University Primate Centre. Records were taken by means of focal animal and instantaneous sampling. In both species the mother was the primary carrier and caretaker; theP. verreauxi father carried the infant significantly more than did any animal other than the mother in theP. diadema group. The infantP. verreauxi spent less time off the mother than didP. diadema from week 4 through week 10. It is concluded thatP. verreauxi shows more non-maternal care thanP. diadema and also develops at a slower rate. The difference in the two species' habitats is discussed as a possible cause.  相似文献

Feeding behavior and rumen contents of sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck) under food limitation were studied on Nakanoshima Island, Hokkaido. During the phase of population growth, the deer subsisted on tree bark and twigs, deciduous leaves and dwarf bamboos (Sasa spp.) in the winter. After a crash in population, the deer began feeding on the fallen leaves of deciduous trees and continued to do so throughout the year. They also ate unpalatable plants Cephalotaxus harringtonia var. nana Rehd., Senecio cannabifolius Less. and Cynanchum caudatum Maxim. as winter foods, which used to remain untouched by deer, and had accordingly expanded their distributions, following a decrease in the amount of dwarf bamboos available. These facts suggest that sika deer drastically shift their foods and exploit alternative foods under conditions of food limitation.  相似文献

I used components of baboon foraging behavior (concurrent fast and direct travel) to categorize core dry-season foods as purposefully or randomly encountered. I then compared the categorized foods to published, a priori predictions for core dry-season foods. Using focal-animal techniques on 6 males from two baboon troops, I collected precise locational data with a differentially corrected Global Positioning System (GPS) over 6 mo. The data analysis yielded the speed and directness of baboon travel between a food-handling event and a prior location. To distinguish purposefully encountered foods from randomly encountered foods, I calculated the average speed and the average observed deviation from straight-line travel exhibited to each resource type. A linear regression describes the relationship between these variables for each resource type. Baboons demonstrate both relatively high speeds and direct travel towards 3 food types: Combretum obovatum, impala, and baobab trees. Baboons were hypothesized a priori to encounter these resources purposefully. Baboons were also hypothesized a priori to encounter corms and perhaps Commiphora paniculatum purposefully, however, they travel neither quickly nor directly to these resources. I interpret this finding in terms of the costs accrued by traveling quickly and directly to fall-back resources. I discuss the ability of concurrent speed and directness to distinguish purposefully encountered foods from randomly encountered foods.  相似文献

Restricted gene dispersion – resulting from both self-pollination and limited capability of pollen migration, as well as seed dispersion at short distances – has been considered the main reason for spatial genetic structuring in plant populations. This study evaluated the intrapopulation genetic structure and the mating system in four populations of Solanum lycocarpum, a woody bush occurring in Brazilian Cerrado vegetation. Two hundred and twenty-four individuals were genotyped through five nuclear SSR loci (30 alleles) and six cpSSR loci (82 haplotypes). The study evidenced that the species mates predominantly by outcrossings , that biparental inbreeding is not common, and that there are almost 10 trees participating as pollen donors per mother-tree. The populations were formed by many mother lineages, indicating efficient seed dispersion by the fauna and the occurrence of multiple foundation events. Spatial genetic structure was observed in three populations (average Sp=0.0184 ± 0.0030) and it resulted from both restricted seed dispersion and from vegetative reproduction. During the collection of seeds for ex situ conservation, seeds must be gathered from 150 to 200 mother trees, so that the effective size of 500 individuals is retained. The sampling must comprise the biggest possible number of populations in a wide area to enable the maintenance of the biggest possible haplotypic diversity.  相似文献

The behavioral interactions of 22 infant and mother Japanese macaques with other group members were studied. Focal-animal observations were made from the time of each infant’s birth until 1 year of age. Infants and mothers both displayed exceedingly strong preferences for associating with matrilineal kin and, specifically, for female kin. The degree of genetic relatedness was positively correlated with levels of spatial proximity, contact, grooming, aggression, and play. Overall frequencies of interactions with nonkin were very low, and partner sex was not an important factor in interactions with nonkin. There were no significant differences between male and female infants in interactions with kin versus nonkin. There was only one significant difference between male and female infants in interactions with males versus females: female infants showed stronger preferences for initiating proximity with females over males than did male infants. Because mothers provide the focal point for infant interactions during the first year of life, we compared the behavior of infants and mothers. Mothers were the recipients of more social interactions than were infants, mothers engaged in more grooming than did infants, and infants engaged in more social play than did mothers. These findings are only partially consistent with kin-selection theory, and the inadequacies of studying matrilineal kin discrimination to test kin selection are reviewed. The near-absence of infant sex differences in associations with social partners suggests that although maternal kin other than the mother are important to infant socialization, they probably do not contribute to the development of behavioral sex differences until after the first year of life.  相似文献

裸果木(Gymnocarpos przewalskii)是亚洲中部荒漠区少有的第三纪孑遗物种,由于气候变化及人为干扰,其自然种群分布范围不断缩小。种子扩散作为植物生活史过程中的重要阶段,不仅对物种生存及其多样性至关重要,还影响物种分布范围和局部丰度。2015年和2016年分别在新疆哈密地区,采用布设种子收集器的方法,对其自然种群种子扩散的时空动态进行了定点连续观测。结果表明:该物种于当年6月上旬开始扩散,2015年略早于2016年。每年种子扩散持续时间约两个月,扩散趋势为单峰曲线,且呈集中大量扩散的模式,扩散高峰期与当年初次月降水高峰期吻合;在顺风的正南和东南方向上,种子扩散密度大且距离远;种子扩散主要集中在母株冠幅下,随着距母株距离的增加,种子扩散密度减少,二者间存在极显著的负相关性(P0.01),由于裸果木枝条繁多,对风力强度起到了一定的阻碍作用,可能是造成种子集中扩散在母株下的原因。裸果木种子扩散受外界环境(降水、风向)和自身因素等方面的影响,当种子在大量降水前完成扩散,将有利于种子在适宜的微生境萌发,是对多风、干旱的恶劣生境的一种长期适应。  相似文献

SDS PAGE was tested as an analytical tool for the identification of fourgreen algae (Ulva rigida, U. rotundata, Enteromorphaintestinalis, E. compressa) used as food ingredients. A referencepattern composed of the bands present all year long was performed foreach species. The pattern for Ulva rotundata consists of 7 bandslocated between 69.9 and 15.5 kDa with the presence of triplicate bandsat 29.5, 26.3 and 22.9 kDa. The pattern for Ulva rigida is consistsof three bands with apparent molecular weights of 68.5, 56.4 and 44.7kDa. The Enteromorpha compressa pattern is characterised by sixbands located between 65.8 and 19.8 kDa. A double band withmolecular weights of 23.1 and 23.9 distinguished this pattern from theothers. Six bands situated between 66.4 and 19.4 kDa with a specifictriplicate band of 25.9, 23.9 and 22.5 kDa constituted the specific patternof Enteromorpha intestinalis. SDS PAGE appears to be suitable forthe identification of green seaweed foods.  相似文献

Grouping-patterns and inter-group relationships of Japanese wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax) were studied at a provisioning site in the Rokko mountain area, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, from 1982 to 1983. The observations were divided into four study periods. Almost all wild boars were individually identified and their kin-relationships were followed from the beginning of the study. To examine grouping-patterns of Japanese wild boars, the degree of association between any two individuals, based on coexisting time at the provisioning site, was analyzed for each study period. Mother and her litter group (MLG), female littermate group (FLG) and solitary individual were recognized grouping-patterns. Groups did not associate with each other. Male offspring separated from their mother before 1 year of age and become solitary. Separation of female offspring occurred before the subsequent parturition of their mother. The proximate cause of separation was increased aggression by the mother. After separation, female offspring formed a FLG. However, the FLG seemed to be generally a temporary one, maintaining its stability only until parturition of it's members. Thereafter adult females had no close association with any other individuals, except for their own infants. Male offspring disappeared from their natal area, while female offspring could remain there.  相似文献

A male Sichuan golden monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellanae) was born on July 24, 1986 to an adult pair on loan from the Chinese government. Physical and behavioral development of the infant, as well as the behavior of the parents, were recorded for the first 20 days of the infant's life. (On Day 21 the trio was returned to the Chongqing Zoo in the People's Republic of China.) The infant pelage was dark gray at birth but soon began changing to the orange-gold color typical of the adults. Forty hours of behavioral data were collected using a combination of scan sampling and all occurrences of selected behaviors techniques. The infant pushed against his mother and pulled toward objects in the enclosure beginning at 4 days of age. Time spent in these behaviors increased steadily and on Day 15 the infant broke contact with his mother for the first time. Mother-infant contact appeared to be maintained by both individuals mutually up to the infant's 10th day of the life. The percentage of time that the infant spent actively embracing his mother began to decline after that while the female continued to spend the majority of her time embracing the infant. During the first few days following the birth, the male always initiated and maintained proximity to the female and the infant. This “vigilant” behavior had declined somewhat by the end of the study.  相似文献

The rumen contents of 63 sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck) shot in the westernmost part of Honshu were analyzed by the point-frame method. The rumen contents were dominated by forbs and the majority of these were evergreen monocotyledonous plants, probably Ophiopogon spp. Evergreen browse leaves (woody leaves), such as Eurya japonica Thunb., Ilex crenata Thunb. and Trachelospermum asiaticum Nakai, were also important, constituting 20–40% of the rumen contents. Other categories accounted for only small proportions, although in summer, graminoids increased but twigs and bark decreased in importance and in fall and winter, fruits and seeds increased in importance. The diet of the deer was characterized by high-quality foods even in winter and by a stability or less-pronounced seasonality throughout the year than found in the northern deer. These results were compared with those from other populations, including a northern sika deer population in Japan.  相似文献

Observations of the feeding behavior of wild olive colobus monkeys (Procolobus verus)were made in southern Sierra Leone, West Africa. Most data came from systematically sampling one habituated social group, which inhabited old secondary rain forest on Tiwai Island. Olive colobus at Tiwai were highly selective feeders, obtaining most of their food from a small number of uncommon middle-canopy trees, from the forest understory, and from climbers. Mature leaf blades were largely ignored; young foliage (particularly of climbers) was a year-round dietary staple, while seeds, flowers, and mature leaf petioles were seasonally important. It is argued that this diet results largely from selection for two different attributes of food: high digestibility and physical location. Preferred foods had low fiber and tannin contents, while preferred feeding sites were in thick low growth and climber tangles. P. verusis the smallest extant primate species using a foregut fermentation system. Observations of its diet accord with inferences drawn from dental anatomy, digestive physiology, and considerations of body size.  相似文献

I tested the hypothesis that mother-young cofeeding correlates with a systematic similar food selection in wild Mayotte brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus). I simultaneously recorded the feeding behavior of 4 maternal dyad members, from infant birth to weaning, and 10–12 mo of juvenile age, during 10-min focal periods, each separated by 5-min intervals over 10 mo. I recorded the solid food items selected for each feeding behavior at the level of specific plant part, along with the distance between the 2 individuals. I considered feeding behaviors simultaneous (between the young lemurs and their mothers) when the young began to eat a food item while the mother was already eating, regardless of the separation distance. During their first year, most of the feeding events of the young brown lemurs were initiated by their mothers. However, infants also selected different food items from those chosen by their mothers in almost one-third of cases, and the food selection dissimilarity was not attributable to an increase in the distance of separation. For juveniles, dissimilar food selection was significantly lower and linked to an increase in mother-juvenile separation distance. Thus, the substantial proportion of dissimilarity in solid foods selected by the infant during the synchronized feeding behaviors strongly suggests that social influences were not food-specific and might instead drive the acquisition of group feeding activity rhythm rather than food selection habits.  相似文献

Summary The importance of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.) as a medicinal tree species has been acknowledged worldwide. Superior trees with desired traits such as high azadirachtin content have been identified and micropropagated. Somaclonal variants that may arise in vitro, however, pose limitations to large-scale micropropagation. It is, therefore, imperative to establish genetic uniformity of such plantlets by ensuring strict quality checks at various stages of in vitro culture. This is the first study that evaluates the applicability of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers in establishing clonal fidelity of tissue culture(TC)-raised neem plants. Seven AFLP primer combinations generated a total of 334 amplified fragments across the mother plant, TC progenies, and other neem accessions that were included as controls. Two hundred and thirty-nine amplified fragments were monomorphic across the mother tree and its TC progenies. No extra band was detected in the TC plantlets that was absent in the mother tree, indicating that the TC plantlets regenerated through nodal explants are indeed true-to-type. Ninety-five AFLP fragments were detected in the controls, which allowed their discrimination from the elite mother tree and its TC progenies. Similarity matrix based on Jaccard's coefficient revealed that the pair-wise value between the mother tree and its TC plantlets was ‘1’, indicating perfect similarity. Phenetic dendrogram based on UPGMA (unweighted pair group method of arithmetic averages) analysis further confirmed the true-to-type nature of TC progenies, since a tie was observed between the mother tree and its TC plantlets. On the contrary, the control neem accessions were distinct from the mother and its TC progenies. AFLP markers proved to be an ideal tool for routine analysis and certification of genetic fidelity of micropropagated plants prior to commercialization, especially in tree species because of their long generation time.  相似文献

Field studies on Semnopithecus vetulus have shown high folivory and the ability to feed heavily on mature leaves, which are constantly available. In research spanning 19 mo, I examined the feeding behavior of 2 free-ranging groups of Semnopithecus vetulus nestor in home gardens and rubber monocultures at Panadura (PT1 group) and Piliyandala (R1 group), Sri Lanka. Overall, results showed that >80% of their diet comprised seasonal plant parts, largely fruits. Despite differences in spatial and temporal food availability in their respective habitats, seasonal plant parts dominated the diets of both groups except briefly (2 mo) for R1 when mature leaf petioles were the main plant food. Both groups increased their use of seasonal foods with heightened seasonal food availability, and increased dietary diversity with declining use of their highest-ranked specific item of diet: fruits of Artocarpus heterophyllus (jakfruit, Moraceae). PT1, which was in a species-rich environment, maintained a high intake of seasonal foods year round by exploiting a large number of species, mainly for fruits. In contrast, R1, in a habitat with significantly lower tree species richness, had a less diverse diet but maintained an equally high intake of seasonal foods, primarily fruits and seeds, by exploiting a few species heavily. My study also highlights the dietary flexibility of a single colobine species in space and time. Such information is useful for conservation planning because rapidly occurring changes are taking place in natural colobine habitats.  相似文献

Most of the wetlands located along the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) ineast-central Florida (USA) have been impounded since the 1950's and1960's to reduce mosquito reproduction. Impounded marsh (i.e.,impoundment) dikes physically separate the wetlands from the estuary toallow artificial flooding of the impoundments during the mosquito breedingperiod (May to October). Presently, Rotational ImpoundmentManagement (RIM) is the preferred impoundment management techniquein the IRL. Impoundments maintained under RIM have culverts installedthrough the dikes which are kept closed during the mosquito breedingseason (to control mosquitos) and are allowed to remain open for theremainder of the year (to allow tidal flow). A 24.3 ha impoundment8 km north of Sebastian Inlet that had been isolated from the IRL for over39 years was studied for 12 months to determine habitat use by fishes aftertidal reconnection and the implementation of RIM. Fish sampling wasconducted with a seine in the perimeter ditch and with clover and minnowtraps in the upper marsh and tidal creek areas of the impoundment. Waterlevel, impoundment bottom topography, and the seasonal nursery functionof the impoundment were factors that contributed to observed patterns offish habitat use during the study. Within the first 15 weeks of perimeterditch sampling, an increase from 9 to 40 species was observed. Transientspecies used the perimeter ditch almost exclusively and entered theimpoundment primarily during the spring open period. Juvenile Pogonias cromis (Linnaeus), Elops saurus Linnaeus, Centropomusundecimalis (Bloch), and Megalops atlanticus Valenciennes were themost abundant recreationally important species, respectively. Habitat useby the most abundant resident species (Gambusia holbrooki Girard,Poecilia latipinna (Lesueur), Cyprinodon variegatus Lacepède, andFundulus confluentus Goode & Bean) was influenced primarily bywater level fluctuations. Resident species used the upper marsh and tidalcreek habitats during summer flooded periods and the cyprinodontids leftthe interior surface of the impoundment last as water levels decreased. Thisstudy is the first to document the recovery of fish populations in areconnected impoundment north of Sebastian Inlet using both active andpassive sampling techniques.  相似文献

Endemic Nesoryzomys swarthi and invasive Rattus rattus exist in unlikely sympatry in Galápagos as female N. swarthi suffer from competition with R. rattus. This study evaluates the role of feeding habits in facilitating their co-occurrence. Spool-and-line tracking of 85 N. swarthi and 33 R. rattus was used to quantify their selected diets, foods of which were used in captive trials of 46 N. swarthi and 34 R. rattus to quantify their preferred diets. Selected diets were compared between species and seasons using niche measures, and contrasted to preferred diets to qualify inferences about competition. Diet overlap was highest in the wet season when food—particularly fruit—abundance was highest and R. rattus diet breadth was broadest. Preferred and selected diets were marginally correlated for R. rattus but uncorrelated for N. swarthi, suggesting that R. rattus interfere with N. swarthi foraging. Diet overlap was highest between female N. swarthi and R. rattus, perhaps due to female breeding requirements. Male N. swarthi avoided R. rattus-preferred foods, possibly to avoid aggressive encounters with R. rattus. During the dry season, when foods declined and the R. rattus population crashed, diet overlap was lowest as R. rattus diet narrowed in the absence of fruits. Female, and particularly male, N. swarthi diet broadened, with emphasis on acquiring Opuntia foods but N. swarthi-preferred and selected diets were uncorrelated, suggesting that their foraging was inhibited by R. rattus. In conclusion, the narrower diet breadth of R. rattus in contrast to N. swarthi suggests that this species may be less adapted to food acquisition at this site, particularly when fruits are absent. The year-round presence of R. rattus, however, appears to inhibit N. swarthi foraging for its preferred diet, and they instead specialise on Opuntia foods, which were uneaten by R. rattus and may provide N. swarthi with a localised competition refuge from encounters with R. rattus. We analyzed population dynamics and birth seasonality of wild bonobos at Wamba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, based on 20 years of observations (1976–1996). Wamba Bonobo infant mortality is much lower than that reported for chimpanzees. This seemes to be related to several socioecological characteristics of bonobos: the use of abundant fruit and herbaceous foods, larger food patch size, female feeding priority, and the absence of infanticide. The mean interval between live births of 4.8 years is shorter than those reported for chimpanzees, and some females simultaneously carried and nursed two successive offspring. Mother–offspring conflicts, such as refusal of suckling attempts and interference with mothers' copulation, which are common in chimpanzees, are rare in Wamba bonobos. A birth peak seems to occur during the light rainy season from March to May, just after the season with the least rainfall. This timing of births is similar to those reported for chimpanzee populations, and might benefit both mother and offspring by maximizing the amount of time before the next dry season.  相似文献

Fruit bodies of hypogeous fungi are an important food source for many small mammals and are consumed by larger mammals as well. A controversial hypothesis that prescribed burning increases fruiting of certain hypogeous fungi based on observations in Tasmania was tested in the Australian Capital Territory to determine if it applied in a quite different habitat. Ten pairs of plots, burnt and nonburnt, were established at each of two sites prescribe-burnt in May 1999. When sampled in early July, after autumn rains had initiated the fungal fruiting season, species richness and numbers of fruit bodies on the burnt plots were extremely low: most plots produced none at all. Both species richness and fruit body numbers were simultaneously high on nonburnt plots. One of the sites was resampled a year after the initial sampling. At that time species richness and fruit body abundance were still significantly less on burnt plots than on nonburnt, but a strong trend towards fungal recovery on the burnt plots was evident. This was particularly so when numbers of fruit bodies of one species, the hypogeous agaric Dermocybe globuliformis, were removed from the analysis. This species strongly dominated the nonburnt plots but was absent from burnt plots in both years. The trend towards recovery of fruit body abundance in the burnt plots one year after the burn was much more pronounced with exclusion of the Dermocybe data. The Tasmanian-based hypothesis was based mostly on the fruiting of two fire-adapted species in the Mesophelliaceae. Neither species occurred on our plots. Accordingly, the results and conclusions of the Tasmanian study cannot be extrapolated to other habitats without extensive additional study. Implications for management of habitat for fungi and the animals that rely on the fungi as a food source are discussed.  相似文献

Densities of nekton and other fauna were measured inthree created salt marshes to examine habitatdevelopment rate. All three marshes were located onPelican Spit in Galveston Bay, Texas, USA and werecreated on dredged material from the Gulf IntracoastalWaterway. The youngest marsh was planted on 1-mcenters in July of 1992. At the time sampling wasinitiated in fall 1992, the marshes were 9, 5, andless than 1 year in age; sampling continued in thefall and spring through spring 1994. Animaldensities were measured within the vegetation at twoelevations using an enclosure sampler. In the fall of1992, 4 months following the planting of the 92Marsh,densities of most marsh organisms were lower in thismarsh compared with the older two marshes. Significantly lower densities were observed fordominant crustaceans (including three species of grassshrimps, two species of commercially-important penaeidshrimps, thinstripe hermit crabs Clibanarius vittatus,and juvenile blue crabs Callinectes sapidus), adominant fish (Gobionellus boleosoma), and thedominant mollusc (Littoraria irrorata). By the fallof 1993, however, densities of most nekton specieswere similar among the three created salt marshes. Incontrast, reduced densities of less mobile epifauna(C. vittatusand L. irrorata) persisted in the 92Marshthroughout the 2 years of sampling. The patterns ofnekton utilization exhibited in these marshes suggestthat the 92Marsh reached its maximum habitat supportfunction for these animals in less than 1 year. Comparisons of the older marshes with natural marshesin the bay system, however, suggest that all three ofthese created marshes are functioning at lower levelsthan natural marshes in terms of supporting productionof commercially important fishery species such aspenaeid shrimps and C. sapidus.  相似文献

Summary Spacing and kinship of the Formosan squirrel, Callosciurus erythraeus thaiwanensis, were studied in two different habitats. One, native habitat in the woods of Kenting, southern Formosa, was rich in available food throughout the year and had several species of predators. The other, a site in Kamakura, central Japan where squirrels had been introduced, had relatively scanty food and few potential predators. 1. Home ranges among males and between sexes overlapped extensively in both habitats. 2. Females occupied exclusive home ranges in Kamakura but had small overlapping home ranges in Ken-ting. 3. Most males disappeared from their natal areas at 1 year old in both habitats (86% in Kamakura and 93% in Ken-ting), but less females disappeared (36% in Kamakura and 35% in Ken-ting). 4. In Kamakura, daughters settled adjacent to the mother or inherited the home range of the mother, but never shared the mother's home range. In Ken-ting, 35% of daughters shared the home range with their mothers. 5. Tolerance among female kin in Ken-ting was probably facilitated by the richness of available food throughout the year, and functioned to reduce predation risk via alarm calling and mobbing.  相似文献
