Ozone inhalation effects in females varying widely in lung size: comparison with males 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been suggested that lung size accounts for observed gender differences in responsiveness to the same total inhaled dose of O3. To test the hypothesis that lung size is a determinant of magnitude of response within a gender, two groups of 14 healthy young adult females differing significantly in forced vital capacity [FVC; i.e., small-lung group mean = 3.74 liters (range 3.2-4.0) and large-lung group mean = 5.11 liters (range 4.5-6.2] were exposed for 1 h to filtered air (FA) and to 0.18 and 0.30 ppm O3. On each occasion, subjects exercised continuously on a cycle ergometer at a work rate that elicited a mean minute ventilation of approximately 47 l/min. For the small-lung group [mean total lung capacity (TLC) = 4.52 liters] exercise O2 uptake was 67% of maximal O2 uptake (VO2max), and that for the large-lung group (TLC 6.37 liters) was 61% of VO2max. Statistical analysis revealed significant decrements for both groups in FVC, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1.0), and forced expiratory flow rate in the middle half of FVC on exposure to 0.18 and 0.30 ppm O3. Exercise respiratory frequency increased, and tidal volume decreased significantly in both groups in response to 0.18 and 0.30 ppm O3 exposure. On exposure to 0.30 ppm O3, the number of individual subjective symptoms reported and their severity were significantly greater for both groups than those reported for the FA and 0.18 ppm O3 exposures. The present study investigated potential sex-related differences in the metabolic response to carbohydrate (CHO) ingestion during exercise. Moderately endurance-trained men and women (n = 8 for each sex) performed 2 h of cycling at approximately 67% Vo(2 max) with water (WAT) or CHO ingestion (1.5 g of glucose/min). Substrate oxidation and kinetics were quantified during exercise using indirect calorimetry and stable isotope techniques ([(13)C]glucose ingestion, [6,6-(2)H(2)]glucose, and [(2)H(5)]glycerol infusion). In both sexes, CHO ingestion significantly increased the rates of appearance (R(a)) and disappearance (R(d)) of glucose during exercise compared with WAT ingestion [males: WAT, approximately 28-29 micromol x kg lean body mass (LBM)(-1) x min(-1); CHO, approximately 53 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); females: WAT, approximately 28-29 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, approximately 61 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); main effect of trial, P < 0.05]. The contribution of plasma glucose oxidation to the energy yield was significantly increased with CHO ingestion in both sexes (from approximately 10% to approximately 20% of energy expenditure; main effect of trial, P < 0.05). Liver-derived glucose oxidation was reduced, although the rate of muscle glycogen oxidation was unaffected with CHO ingestion (males: WAT, 108 +/- 12 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, 108 +/- 11 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); females: WAT, 89 +/- 10 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1); CHO, 93 +/- 11 micromol x kg LBM(-1) x min(-1)). CHO ingestion reduced fat oxidation and lipolytic rate (R(a) glycerol) to a similar extent in both sexes. Finally, ingested CHO was oxidized at similar rates in men and women during exercise (peak rates of 0.70 +/- 0.08 and 0.65 +/- 0.06 g/min, respectively). The present investigation suggests that the metabolic response to CHO ingestion during exercise is largely similar in men and women. 相似文献

The resting content and use of myocellular triacylglycerol (MCTG) during 90 min of submaximal exercise [60% of peak oxygen uptake (VO(2 peak))] were studied in 21 eumenorrheic female and 21 male subjects at different training levels [untrained (UT), moderately trained (MT), and endurance trained (END)]. Males and females were matched according to their VO(2 peak) expressed relative to lean body mass, physical activity level, and training history. All subjects ingested the same controlled diet for 8 days, and all females were tested in the midfollicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Resting MCTG, measured with the muscle biopsy technique, averaged 48.4 +/- 4.2, 48.5 +/- 8.4, and 52.2 +/- 5.8 mmol/kg dry wt in UT, MT, and END females, respectively, and 34.1 +/- 4.9, 31.6 +/- 3.3, and 38.4 +/- 3.0 mmol/kg dry wt in UT, MT, and END males, respectively (P < 0.001, females vs. males in all groups). Exercise decreased MCTG content in the female subjects by an average of 25%, regardless of training status, whereas in the male groups MCTG content was unaffected by exercise. The arterial plasma insulin concentration was higher (P < 0.05) and the arterial plasma epinephrine concentration was lower (P < 0.05) in the females than in the males at rest and during exercise. MCTG use was correlated to the resting concentration of MCTG (P < 0.001). We conclude that resting content and use of MCTG during exercise are related to gender and furthermore are independent of training status. 相似文献

Natural selection is assumed to act more strongly on X-linked loci than on autosomal loci because the fitness effect of a recessive mutation on the X chromosome is fully expressed in hemizygous males. Therefore, selection is expected to fix or remove recessive mutations on the X chromosome more efficiently than those on autosomes. However, the assumption that hemizygosity of the X chromosome selectively accelerates changes in allele frequency has not been confirmed directly. To examine this assumption, we investigated current natural selection on X-linked chemoreceptor genes in a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster by comparing nucleotide diversity, linkage disequilibrium (LD), and departure from the neutrality in 4 chemoreceptor genes on 100 X chromosomes each from female and male flies. The general pattern of nucleotide diversity and LD for the genes investigated was similar in females and males. In contrast, males harbored significantly fewer rare polymorphisms defined as singletons and doubletons. When all the gene sequences were concatenated, Tajima's D showed a significant departure from the neutrality in both females and males, whereas Fu and Li's F* value revealed departure only in males. These results suggest that some rare polymorphisms on the X chromosome from females are recessively deleterious and are removed by stronger purifying selection when transferred to hemizygous males. 相似文献

In this study we investigated the effect of oral contraceptive (OC) use (OCU) and non-use (OCNU) on growth hormone (GH) responses to exercise in the same females (n = 7, age 22-31 years) during the normal course of OC therapy. Continuous (60% maximum oxygen consumption, VO2max for 20 min) and intermittent exercise (>80% VO2max) protocols of equal total duration, and similar external work were performed during phases of OCNU (days 3-5 of the menstrual cycle) and OCU (days 7-11). Levels of GH, lactate, 17 beta-estradiol, and progesterone were measured. Lactate responses were significantly greater (P<0.05) during intermittent than continuous exercise, with no effect of OC use. However, significantly greater GH responses were found during the OCU phase than the OCNU phase in both the continuous (+94%) and intermittent (+250%) exercise protocols. Estradiol and progesterone levels increased significantly during exercise in all four conditions. We suggest that the increased GH responses observed during the OCU-phase were potentiated by the elevated levels levels of total estrogens (endogenous 17 beta-estradiol and exogenous ethinyl estradiol). It is suggested that training programs for female athletes could be timed in accordance with the menstrual cycle to benefit from an increased GH response to exercise during phases of OC use or the luteal phase of women not on OC therapy. 相似文献

To determine whether O3 exposure increased airway responsiveness to antigen inhalation, we studied airway responsiveness to acetylcholine (ACh) and Ascaris suum antigen (AA) before and after O3 in dogs both sensitive and insensitive to AA. Airway responsiveness was assessed by determining the provocative concentration of ACh and AA aerosols that increased respiratory resistance (Rrs) to twice the base-line value. O3 (3 parts per million) increased airway responsiveness to ACh in dogs both sensitive and insensitive to AA, and it significantly decreased the ACh provocation concentration from 0.541 +/- 0.095 to 0.102 +/- 0.047 (SE) mg/ml (P less than 0.01; n = 10). AA aerosols, even at the highest concentration in combination with O3, did not increase Rrs in dogs insensitive to AA. However, O3 increased airway responsiveness to AA in AA-sensitive dogs and significantly decreased log AA provocation concentration from 2.34 +/- 0.22 to 0.50 +/- 0.17 (SE) log protein nitrogen units/ml (P less than 0.01; n = 7). O3-induced hyperresponsiveness to ACh returned to the base-line level within 2 wk, but hyperresponsiveness to AA continued for greater than 2 wk. The plasma histamine concentration after AA challenge was significantly higher after than before O3 (P less than 0.01). Intravenous infusion of OKY-046 (100 micrograms.kg-1.min-1), an inhibitor of thromboxane synthesis, inhibited the O3-induced increase in responsiveness to ACh, but it had no effects on the O3-induced increase in responsiveness to AA and the increase in the plasma histamine concentration. These results suggest that O3 increases susceptibility to the antigen in sensitized dogs via a different mechanism from that of O3-induced muscarinic hyperresponsiveness. 相似文献

Many theories have been proposed for interpreting the relative sexual mortalities in natural populations, but the effects of maladaptive genes from migrants on sexual mortality have not been examined. In this study, I systematically explore the properties of migration load in dioecious plants where gender dimorphism is determined by sex chromosomes (the XX-XY or similar system). Two stages of gene flow (pollen and seed) and two stages of selection (gametophyte and sporophyte) are jointly examined in the one- and two-locus cases. The general results show that several factors, including the maladaptive allele frequencies in migrants, migration rate, selection, and linkage disequilibria, can individually or jointly alter the relative sexual mortalities at either the gametophyte or the sporophyte stage, or both. When there are the same values between sexes in the parameters relevant to the migrant gene frequencies and two-stage selection coefficients under the additive viability model (without Y-chromosome and linkage disequilibrium effects), the average mortality is higher in ovules than in pollen since the males do not inherit the maladaptive genes from migrating pollen. The average mortality per individual in the homogametic sex is almost twice as large as that in heterogametic sex at the sporophyte stage. Under the additive viability model, the relative sexual mortalities at the gametophyte stage are negatively related to the relative sexual mortalities at the sporophyte stage. 相似文献

Summary We analysed sexual size dimorphism for 21 populations of microtine rodents. Female to male size ratio varied considerably among populations from females significantly larger than males (ratio=1.18) to males larger than females (ratio=0.78). In a multiple regression analysis female to male home range size ratio explained 94% of the total variation in body size dimorphism and was the only one of eight independent variables that was selected in a stepwise regression procedure. When females are the larger sex, males have home range sizes much larger than females. We suggest that the relationship between home range size ratio and body weight size dimorphism reflects different selection pressures on males and females in competition for resources and mates. 相似文献

Chronic, as well as acute, exercise increases circulating PRL in females. The response of males to repeated exercise, however, is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of acute and chronic exercise on plasma PRL levels in untrained males. Eight male subjects performed cycle ergometer exercise at 50% of their maximal oxygen uptake on 10 consecutive days. The subjects exercised in an environmental chamber maintained at 39 degrees C and 30% relative humidity. PRL levels were measured on days 1, 5, and 10 before exercise, and after 20 and 45 minutes of exercise. Acute exercise increased PRL levels. However, plasma levels did not significantly increase during exercise on days 5 and 10. This suggests a similarity in the PRL response to acute exercise in males and females, but a sex difference in the response to chronic exercise. 相似文献

We tested the signal value of song overlapping in banded wrens(Thryothorus pleurostictus), using interactive playback to eitheroverlap or alternate with their songs. Males shortened songduration and decreased variability in song length when theirsongs were overlapped by playback, suggesting that they wereattempting to avoid being overlapped and perhaps being lessaggressive. A novel finding was an effect of long-term priorexperience: song lengths remained relatively short in alternatingtrials that followed two or more days after overlapping trials.Approach responses to the two treatments did not differ overall,but there was a parallel effect of prior experience: males tendedto stay further from the speaker during alternating treatmentsif they had previously been overlapped by playback. Some femalespaired to the male subjects sang in response to playback andwere also influenced by prior experience, singing more duringalternating trials that had not been preceded by an overlappingtrial. Male overlappers may signal dominance over a rival toother male or female receivers in a communication network, butit is currently unclear whether overlapping indicates motivationto escalate an aggressive interaction or whether this singingstrategy is related to male quality. Banded wrens are long livedand maintain year-round territories, so modifying responsesto rivals based on prior experience is likely to be importantfor success. 相似文献

Since cuckoldry risk is asymmetrical, we hypothesized that parental investment would be more affected by paternal than maternal resemblance. To test this hypothesis, we asked subjects hypothetical questions about investing in children under conditions in which their faces or those of other people had been morphed with photographs of children. Males were more likely to choose a face they had been morphed with as the most attractive, the child they were most likely to adopt, the child they would like to spend the most time with, the child they would spend US$50 on, and the child they would least resent having to pay child support for. Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone that plays a principal role in metabolic function and stress responses in wild primates. Stressors are ubiquitous in environments and elicit a variety of physiological and behavioral responses. While stress responses are adaptive in the short-term, they can have negative effects when experienced over longer durations. As a physiological stressor, the process of lactation is an energetically expensive activity for mammals. Milk production increases water loss and increased hydration demands are amplified in mammalian species inhabiting xeric habitats, including lemur species living in northwestern Madagascar—the region for this research work. Here, sifakas give birth during the dry season (May–October) and wean infants during the subsequent wet season (November–April). The author collected fecal samples during the 24 weeks following infant births in 10 groups of Coquerel's sifaka in Ankarafantsika Park, Madagascar. The author analyzed the samples by comparing the first 12-week time block to the second 12-week time block, which corresponded to the dry and the beginning of the wet seasons, respectively. Analyses were based on 375 samples collected over two birth seasons (2010 and 2011). A linear mixed model determined the relationships between reproductive class and temporal cortisol variation. The three reproductive classes had significantly different cortisol concentrations. Lactating females had lower cortisol than adult males and nonlactating females in all weeks postnatal. Males had significantly higher cortisol in weeks 13–24 relative to weeks 1–12. Examining seasonal changes in cortisol concentrations demonstrates how lemurs respond physiologically to the energetic constraints of lactation during the critical life history stage of infant development. 相似文献

The evolution of female mate choice, broadly defined to include any female behaviour or morphology which biases matings towards certain male phenotypes, is traditionally thought to result from direct or indirect benefits which females acquire when mating with preferred males. In contrast, new models have shown that female mate choice can be generated by sexual conflict, where preferred males may cause a fitness depression in females. Several studies have shown that female Drosophila melanogaster bias matings towards large males. Here, we use male size as a proxy for male attractiveness and test how female fitness is affected by reproducing with large or small males, under two different male densities. Females housed with large males had reduced lifespan and aged at an accelerated rate compared with females housed with small males, and increased male density depressed female fitness further. These fitness differences were due to effects on several different fitness components. Female fitness covaried negatively with male courtship rate, which suggests a cost of courtship. Mating rate increased with male size, whereas female fitness peaked at an intermediate mating rate. Our results suggest that female mate choice in D. melanogaster is, at least in part, a by-product of sexual conflict over the mating rate. 相似文献

Through the decades of relentless and dedicated studies in Drosophila melanogaster, the pathway that governs sexual development
has been elucidated in great detail and has become a paradigm in understanding fundamental cell-fate decisions. However, recent
phylogenetic studies show that the molecular strategy used in Drosophila deviates in some important aspects from those found
in other dipteran flies and suggest that the Drosophila pathway is likely to be a derivative of a simpler and more common
principle. In this essay, I will discuss the evolutionary plasticity of the sex-determining pathway based on studies in the
common housefly, Musca domestica. Diversification appears to primarily arise from subtle differences in the regulation of
the key switch gene transformer at the top of the pathway. On the basis of these findings I propose a new idea on how the
Drosophila pathway may have evolved from a more archetypal system such as in M. domestica. In essence, the arrival of an X
counting mechanism mediated by Sex-lethal to compensate for Xlinked gene dose differences set the stage for an intimate coupling
of the two pathways. Its precedent recruitment to the dosage compensation pathway allowed for an intervention in the regulation

Five untrained females having no history of heat exposure worked in a cool (16-20 degrees C db, 28% rh) environment on day 1 and a warm environment on day 2 (45 degrees C db, 28% rh). Exercise level (bicycle ergometer) was 30% of individual Vo2 max values and work time on both days was 45 min. Venous blood samples were obtained at rest, after 40 min of exercise and 25 min after exercise ceased. Analysis of blood samples indicated an 8.3% increase in Hct during exercise on day 1 and a plasma volume reduction of 12.8% though total circulating protein increased 11.5%. Except for K+ all parameters approximated control values within 25 min postexercise. On day 2, exercise in heat caused a 12% increase in Hct and a plasma volume reduction of 17.7%. Mean total protein did not significantly change from resting values. These data indicated that for a given % Vo2 max, untrained females suffer considerably greater reductions in plasma volumes than do exercised males. Similar to males, dilatation of the cutaneous vascular bed in unacclimatized females resulted in loss of protein from the vascular volume. 相似文献
