The nectary of Rosmarinus officinalis L. has the form of a four-lobed,asymmetrical disc situated around the base of the ovary. Thenectary lobe facing the lower flower lip is enlarged and isthe only one to have modified stomata. Vascular strands consistingof phloem only occur in the nectariferous tissue. It is suggestedthat the pre-nectar originating in the phloem accumulates primarilyas starch grains in plastids of the nectariferous cells. Thenumber of grains is very large before anthesis and decreasesconsiderably at anthesis. The transport of the pre-nectar tothe various nectariferous cells appears to be mainly via thesymplast. In order to evaluate the constancy of amino acid composition and concentration, several randomly collected samples of genuine floral nectar from different flowers of several plant species were analysed. Although there seems to exist a rough pattern of species-specific nectar amino acid composition, amino acid concentration varied strongly from sample to sample. Apart from the lack of constancy in concentration of floral amino acids, our samples do not show amino acid concentration values as assigned typical for the pertinent pollination mode by other workers. 相似文献

Abstract
The patterns of seasonal variation in the structure of a marine benthic microbial community were examined using phospholipid
fatty acid analysis (PLFA). Principal component analysis of PLFA profiles indicated a strong seasonal pattern dominated the
variance within the data set. Three functional groups of microorganisms (phototrophic microeukaryotes, and two groups of anaerobic
bacteria) were disproportionately abundant in the communities that mapped to either extreme of the first principle component.
Phototrophic microeukaryotes were most abundant and exhibited the greatest relative abundance during periods of cold water.
In contrast, the two functional groups of anaerobic bacteria showed the greatest relative abundance during times of warm water.
Differential responses by these groups, and macrofaunal deposit feeders, to light intensity and water temperature were offered
as the proximal causes of the observed patterns.

Microbial Community Structure and Oxidative Enzyme Activity in Nitrogen-amended North Temperate Forest Soils 总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
Large regions of temperate forest are subject to elevated atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition which can affect soil organic matter dynamics by altering mass loss rates, soil respiration, and dissolved organic matter production. At present there is no general model that links these responses to changes in the organization and operation of microbial decomposer communities. Toward that end, we studied the response of litter and soil microbial communities to high levels of N amendment (30 and 80 kg ha–1 yr–1) in three types of northern temperate forest: sugar maple/basswood (SMBW), sugar maple/red oak (SMRO), and white oak/black oak (WOBO). We measured the activity of extracellular enzymes (EEA) involved directly in the oxidation of lignin and humus (phenol oxidase, peroxidase), and indirectly, through the production of hydrogen peroxide (glucose oxidase, glyoxal oxidase). Community composition was analyzed by extracting and quantifying phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) from soils. Litter EEA responses at SMBW sites diverged from those at oak-bearing sites (SMRO, BOWO), but the changes were not statistically significant. For soil, EEA responses were consistent across forests types: phenol oxidase and peroxidase activities declined as a function of N dose (33–73% and 5–41%, respectively, depending on forest type); glucose oxidase and glyoxal oxidase activities increased (200–400% and 150–300%, respectively, depending on forest type). Principal component analysis (PCA) ordinated forest types and treatment responses along two axes; factor 1 (44% of variance) was associated with phenol oxidase and peroxidase activities, factor 2 (31%) with glucose oxidase. Microbial biomass did not respond to N treatment, but nine of the 23 PLFA that formed >1 mol% of total biomass showed statistically significant treatment responses. PCA ordinated forest types and treatment responses along three axes (36%, 26%, 12% of variance). EEA factors 1 and 2 correlated negatively with PLFA factor 1 (r = –0.20 and –0.35, respectively, n = 108) and positively with PLFA factor 3 (r = +0.36 and +0.20, respectively, n = 108). In general, EEA responses were more strongly tied to changes in bacterial PLFA than to changes in fungal PLFA. Plants produce nectar in their flowers as a reward for their pollinators and most of our crops depend on insect pollination, but little is known on the physiological control of nectar secretion. Jasmonates are well-known for their effects on senescence, the development and opening of flowers and on plant defences such as extrafloral nectar. Their role in floral nectar secretion has, however, not been explored so far. We investigated whether jasmonates have an influence on floral nectar secretion in oil-seed rape, Brassica napus. The floral tissues of this plant produced jasmonic acid (JA) endogenously, and JA concentrations peaked shortly before nectar secretion was highest. Exogenous application of JA to flowers induced nectar secretion, which was suppressed by treatment with phenidone, an inhibitor of JA synthesis. This effect could be reversed by additional application of JA. Jasmonoyl-isoleucine and its structural mimic coronalon also increased nectar secretion. Herbivory or addition of JA to the leaves did not have an effect on floral nectar secretion, demonstrating a functional separation of systemic defence signalling from reproductive nectar secretion. Jasmonates, which have been intensively studied in the context of herbivore defences and flower development, have a profound effect on floral nectar secretion and, thus, pollination efficiency in B. napus. Our results link floral nectar secretion to jasmonate signalling and thereby integrate the floral nectar secretion into the complex network of oxylipid-mediated developmental processes of plants. 相似文献

Pulmonaria officinalis is an understorey spring geophyte, which starts its vegetative period before full foliation of the tree storey. During its early growth phase it is exposed to full solar radiation, therefore the enhanced UV-B radiation could present a threat to this species. An outdoor experiment in which potted plants were exposed to below ambient, ambient, and above ambient (corresponding to 17% ozone reduction) UV-B radiation, was conducted in order to evaluate the radiation effects. The amount of photosynthetic pigments and photochemical efficiency of PSII were not affected, but the amount of UV-B absorbing compounds was lower in plants grown under reduced UV-B. This change was measurable after only fourteen days in reproductive shoots, while in the vegetative shoots, it was not detectable until after three months. The leaves of P. officinalis are variegated and the light green spots became less transparent to PAR under enhanced UV-B. The results reveal that under simulated 17% ozone depletion the harmful effects of UV-B on the measured parameters were negligible. 相似文献

In animal‐pollinated plants, both the spatial distribution of flowering individuals and the number of flowers that an individual displays affect pollen deposition rates and female reproductive success. Heterostylous species are likely to be particularly sensitive to the contingencies of spatial distribution, as they are reproductively subdivided into distinct mating groups, which usually exhibit self‐ and intra‐morph incompatibility and differ in floral morphology. In this paper, we explore the joint effects of both spatial distribution of potential mates and floral display size on morph‐specific pollen deposition rates and seed set patterns in two natural populations of Pulmonaria officinalis, a distylous species with a weak self‐incompatibility system. Both total stigmatic pollen load and the proportion of legitimate pollen decreased with increasing spatial isolation. Legitimate (intermorph) pollen transfer was, however, asymmetric and decreased more rapidly with decreasing proximity to a compatible legitimate mating partner in the S‐morph than in the L‐morph. Total stigmatic pollen loads per flower increased with increasing floral display size, indicating that large plants are disproportionately more visited than smaller individuals. However, because legitimate pollen deposition decreased with increasing floral display size, these results also suggest that larger numbers of flowers increase the degree of geitonogamous pollination. In both the L‐ and S‐morph, seed set significantly decreased with increasing isolation from a legitimate mating partner, but in the L‐morph seed set was less dependent on the spatial distribution of the S‐morph. In addition, seed set significantly increased with floral display size in the L‐morph, but not in the S‐morph. These findings indicate that the spatial distribution of potential mates and variation in floral display size may cause morph‐specific differences in pollen deposition rates and female reproductive success. 相似文献

Metabolic abilities and micrfiobial community structure were investigated through three semiarid Mediterranean soils of SE
Spain. The soils were (1) a Typic Calcixerept under an adult pine plantation (PP), growing on abandoned agricultural terraces;
(2) a Typic Calcixeroll under a native pinewood (NP); and (3) a Typic Haploxerept covered with a grass steppe (GS). PP and
NP were similar as regards their genesis, but the former used to be tilled. NP and GS were undisturbed and supported natural
and seminatural vegetation, respectively. Seven samples in 10-cm depth increments were taken in triplicate along each soil
profile. Community-level physiological profiles based on sole-C-source use were determined to characterize the metabolic abilities.
A 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis was performed to investigate the microbial
genetic structure. Plant cover and land-use history were major determinants of microbial community structure. Microbial communities
residing in soils under a native pinewood, the most diverse and stable plant cover, were the most complex both metabolically
and genetically. The microbial community structure distinctly changed with depth, related to the quantity and quality of total
organic carbon. Both undisturbed soils showed falling gradients of metabolic and genetic complexity, which were invariably
of a greater magnitude in the mature woodland than in the grass steppe. In the planted pinewood, however, the substrate-use
diversity increased with depth, apparently a response to the depleted metabolic abilities within its upper layer (0–30 cm).
Tilling and plant cover removal might be responsible for such a perturbation. In the same profile, molecular fingerprint patterns
of the topsoil layer (0–10 cm) indicated a disturbed genetic structure that might underlie the loss of metabolic abilities.
However, the genetic structure of the deeper layers of the planted and native pinewoods was not dissimilar, revealing that
equivalent genetic resources perform different environmental functions under changing soil scenarios. 相似文献

Microbial Biomass, Community Structure and Metal Tolerance of a Naturally Pb-Enriched Forest Soil 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The effect of long-term elevated soil Pb levels on soil microbiota was studied at a forest site in Norway, where the soil
has been severely contaminated with Pb since the last period of glaciation (several thousand years). Up to 10% Pb (total amount,
w/w) has been found in the top layer. The microbial community was drastically affected, as judged from changes in the phospholipid
fatty acid (PLFA) pattern. Specific PLFAs that were high in Pb-enriched soil were branched (especially br17:0 and br18:0),
whereas PLFAs common in eukaryotic organisms such as fungi (18:2ω6,9 and 20:4) were low compared with levels at adjacent,
uncontaminated sites. Congruent changes in the PLFA pattern were found upon analyzing the culturable part of the bacterial
community. The high Pb concentrations in the soil resulted in increased tolerance to Pb of the bacterial community, measured
using both thymidine incorporation and plate counts. Furthermore, changes in tolerance were correlated to changes in the community
structure. The bacterial community of the most contaminated soils showed higher specific activity (thymidine and leucine incorporation
rates) and higher culturability than that of control soils. Fungal colony forming units (CFUs) were 10 times lower in the
most Pb-enriched soils, the species composition was widely different from that in control soils, and the isolated fungi had
high Pb tolerance. The most commonly isolated fungus in Pb-enriched soils was Tolypocladium inflatum. Comparison of isolates from Pb-enriched soil and isolates from unpolluted soils showed that T. inflatum was intrinsically Pb-tolerant, and that the prolonged conditions with high Pb had not selected for any increased tolerance. 相似文献

Tropaeolum majus (nasturtiums) were grown from seed in growthcabinets, under 380 and 750 ppmv CO2. Elevated CO2significantlyincreased nectar secretion rate, both in flowers milked of nectardaily and in once sampled, 3-d-old flowers. Elevated CO2didnot affect time to flowering, total number of flowers produced,pollen to ovule ratio, or the total or individual concentrationsof nectar amino acids. The dry weight and longevity of individualflowers was also unchanged. Nectar sugar content was unchangedby elevated CO2in a subset of flowers used to assess the 3-d-oldnectar volume. This subset did not show the same increase innectar volume under elevated CO2as the full set, resulting inthe concentration of sugars remaining unchanged. Overall, thequantity rather than the quality of the nectar changed underelevated CO2while flower characteristics remained constant,implying that the identity of pollinators may remain the samewhile foraging behaviour (e.g. number of visits per plant, distancetravelled) may change in the future. We studied the effect of floral color change on long- and short-distance attraction of insect pollinators to the herb lungwort, Pulmonaria collina. Lungwort flowers change color with age from red to blue. Young red flowers had a significantly greater pollen and nectar
reward and were significantly more often unpollinated than old blue ones. Red and blue flowers both influenced long-distance
attractiveness of plants, defined as the number of insect approaches towards an individual plant. After reaching a plant,
flower visitors preferred to visit young red flowers. Therefore, short-distance attractiveness, defined as the number of flowers
visited successively on an individual plant, was influenced mainly by the number of young red flowers. The co-occurrence of
the change in reproductive ability, in amount of reward, and in flower color enabled lungwort plants to direct pollinators
to reproductive, highly rewarding red flowers. The data suggest that by maintaining changed flowers lungwort plants can increase
their long-distance attraction and simultaneously enhance the probability of flower visits to pre-changed flowers. Thus, we
propose floral color change as a mechanism that can increase the efficiency of pollen transfer to enhance plant fitness.

Microbial Diversity and Community Structure of Postdisturbance Forest Soils as Determined by Sole-Carbon-Source Utilization Patterns 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract
The impact of clear-cutting, scarification, and prescribed burning on forest soil microbial community structure was assessed
using sole-carbon-source utilization (SCSU). Organic and mineral soil samples were collected on two dates from Pinus banksiana plots that had been clear-cut, clear-cut followed by prescribed burning, clear-cut followed by scarification, or had not
been harvested. Microorganisms were extracted from the soil samples and used to inoculate Gram-negative Biolog? plates. Patterns
of substrate metabolism were used to calculate Shannon, Simpson, McIntosh, and related evenness indices. Principal component
analysis (PCA) resolved organic and mineral soils. Organic soil exhibited higher metabolic diversity than mineral soil. Scarified
plots showed lower diversity on one date, when diversity indices were calculated using all carbon sources, and on both dates
when calculated using carboxylic acids, only. The results suggest that SCSU may be used to assess the impact of forestry practices
on microbial diversity and community structure by using a subset of carbon substrates.

Distyly typically involves reciprocal polymorphism in stamen and style lengths and a set of associated polymorphisms of pollen and stigma characters. This flower polymorphism has been regarded as a strategy to reduce the likelihood of self- and intramorph pollination and to promote legitimate intermorph pollination. Although most distylous plants are characterized by a physiological self- and intramorph-incompatibility system, previous work on Pulmonaria affinis and other distylous Boraginaceae species have shown that self-incompatibility was not strict. In this study, we examined pollen deposition rates and the functioning of the distylous breeding system in Pulmonaria officinalis. Flowers exhibited reciprocal herkogamy and several other ancillary features of heterostyly. Controlled pollinations clearly showed weak self-incompatibility, with the LS-morph showing higher rates of seed set following self-, intramorph- and intermorph-pollinations than the SS-individuals. On the other hand, SS-pollen showed higher germination rates and pollen tube growth than that of LS-pollen. Under natural conditions, both the proficiency of legitimate pollen transfer and the proportion of deposited pollen were asymmetrical. Although SS-pollen grains showed a higher proficiency for legitimate transfer than that of LS-pollen on a per pollen basis, the ratio of legitimate to illegitimate deposited pollen on stigmas of SS-flowers markedly exceeded that of LS-flowers. The latter was explained by the higher pollen production rates of LS-individuals compared to SS-individuals. High levels of illegitimate pollen deposition on LS-stigmas, on the other hand, were attributed to the limited proboscis length of the principal pollinators and the occurrence of floral hairs at the corolla entrance of LS-flowers. This study thus indicates asymmetrical pollen transport patterns and morph-specific differences in the strength of the incompatibility system; two aspects that may affect female reproductive success and morph ratio variation under pollen limited conditions. 相似文献

An Integrated Study to Analyze Soil Microbial Community Structure and Metabolic Potential in Two Forest Types 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Soil microbial metabolic potential and ecosystem function have received little attention owing to difficulties in methodology. In this study, we selected natural mature forest and natural secondary forest and analyzed the soil microbial community and metabolic potential combing the high-throughput sequencing and GeoChip technologies. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA sequencing showed that one known archaeal phylum and 15 known bacterial phyla as well as unclassified phylotypes were presented in these forest soils, and Acidobacteria, Protecobacteria, and Actinobacteria were three of most abundant phyla. The detected microbial functional gene groups were related to different biogeochemical processes, including carbon degradation, carbon fixation, methane metabolism, nitrogen cycling, phosphorus utilization, sulfur cycling, etc. The Shannon index for detected functional gene probes was significantly higher (P<0.05) at natural secondary forest site. The regression analysis showed that a strong positive (P<0.05) correlation was existed between the soil microbial functional gene diversity and phylogenetic diversity. Mantel test showed that soil oxidizable organic carbon, soil total nitrogen and cellulose, glucanase, and amylase activities were significantly linked (P<0.05) to the relative abundance of corresponded functional gene groups. Variance partitioning analysis showed that a total of 81.58% of the variation in community structure was explained by soil chemical factors, soil temperature, and plant diversity. Therefore, the positive link of soil microbial structure and composition to functional activity related to ecosystem functioning was existed, and the natural secondary forest soil may occur the high microbial metabolic potential. Although the results can''t directly reflect the actual microbial populations and functional activities, this study provides insight into the potential activity of the microbial community and associated feedback responses of the terrestrial ecosystem to environmental changes. 相似文献

The floral nectary of Tropaeolun majus L. was studied with theaid of a microscope with transmitting and incident light, atransmission electron microscope and a scanning electron microscope.The Gomori method was used for the localization of acid phosphatase.As a result of this investigation the previously accepted viewthat nectar in this plant is secreted only from the hair tipsof the inner epidermis of the calyx spur was found to be inaccurate.The present studies showed that the parenchyma cells locatedbetween the inner epidermis and the region of the vascular bundlesof the lowest third of the spur, are the main nectar-secretingelements of the nectary. These secretory cells release the nectarsolution into intercellular spaces leading to modified stomata,through which it is exuded into the spur cavity. The modifiedstomata occur in the lowest portion of the spur only. At thestage of secretion small droplets of liquid of high viscositywere observed on the epidermal hairs. Background
Chytridiomycosis is a fungal disease linked to local and global extinctions of amphibians. Susceptibility to chytridiomycosis varies greatly between amphibian species, but little is known about between- and within-population variability. However, this kind of variability is the basis for the evolution of tolerance and resistance evolution to disease.Methodology/Principal Findings
In a common garden experiment, we measured mortality after metamorphosis of Alytes obstetricans naturally infected with Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Mortality rates differed significantly among populations and ranged from 27 to 90%. Within populations, mortality strongly depended on mass at and time through metamorphosis.Conclusions/Significance
Although we cannot rule out that the differences observed resulted from differences in skin microbiota, different pathogen strains or environmental effects experienced by the host or the pathogen prior to the start of the experiment, we argue that genetic differences between populations are a likely source of at least part of this variation. To our knowledge, this is the first study showing differences in survival between and within populations under constant laboratory conditions. Assuming that some of this intraspecific variation has a genetic basis, this may suggest that there is the potential for the evolution of resistance or tolerance, which might allow population persistence. 相似文献19.
The results of longterm studies of yeasts inhabiting soil, plant surfaces, and plant residues in typical subboreal forests of the European part of Russia are summarized. The cell number and species diversity of yeast communities in the array of substrates corresponding to succession stages in plant residue decomposition are shown to steadily decline. Each stage is characterized by its specific set of dominating species. The yeast diversity in forest biogeocenoses is shown to surpass that in other geographic zones. This manifests itself in a greater number of species occurring in similar arrays of substrates, in the absence of conspicuous dominants on the biogeocenotic level, and in a higher differentiation of the yeast population with respect to its habitat type. The forest yeast populations are also characterized by a high diversity of yeasts of ascomycetous affinity and of the anamorphic stages of Taphrinales and Tremellales and by the presence of typical pedobiont species (except Lipomyces spp.). 相似文献

Carbonate crusts in marine environments can act as sinks for carbon dioxide. Therefore, understanding carbonate crust formation could be important for understanding global warming. In the present study, the microbial communities of three carbonate crust samples from deep-sea mud volcanoes in the eastern Mediterranean were characterized by sequencing 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes amplified from DNA directly retrieved from the samples. In combination with the mineralogical composition of the crusts and lipid analyses, sequence data were used to assess the possible role of prokaryotes in crust formation. Collectively, the obtained data showed the presence of highly diverse communities, which were distinct in each of the carbonate crusts studied. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences were found in all crusts and the majority was classified as α-, γ-, and δ-
Proteobacteria. Interestingly, sequences of Proteobacteria related to Halomonas and Halovibrio sp., which can play an active role in carbonate mineral formation, were present in all crusts. Archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences were retrieved from two of the crusts studied. Several of those were closely related to archaeal sequences of organisms that have previously been linked to the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM).
