It has been suggested that observed spatial variation in mackerel fisheries, extending over several hundreds of kilometers, is reflective of climate-driven changes in mackerel migration patterns. Previous studies have been unable to clearly demonstrate this link. In this paper we demonstrate correlation between temperature and mackerel migration/distribution as proxied by mackerel catch data from both scientific bottom trawl surveys and commercial fisheries. We show that mackerel aggregate and migrate distances of up to 500 km along the continental shelf edge from mid-November to early March. The path of this migration coincides with the location of the relatively warm shelf edge current and, as a consequence of this affinity, mackerel are guided towards the main spawning area in the south. Using a simulated time series of temperature of the shelf edge current we show that variations in the timing of the migration are significantly correlated to temperature fluctuations within the current. The proposed proxies for mackerel distribution were found to be significantly correlated. However, the correlations were weak and only significant during periods without substantial legislative or technical developments. Substantial caution should therefore be exercised when using such data as proxies for mackerel distribution. Our results include a new temperature record for the shelf edge current obtained by embedding the available hydrographic observations within a statistical model needed to understand the migration through large parts of the life of adult mackerel and for the management of this major international fishery. 相似文献

Spawning behaviour of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) was investigated using electronic satellite tags deployed in the western Mediterranean spawning ground, around the Balearic Islands (years 2009-2011). All the fish were tagged underwater and released within schools. In general, the fish tagged in the same year/school displayed common migratory trends. Following extended residency around the Balearic Islands, most tagged tuna crossed the Strait of Gibraltar heading for the North Atlantic. Discrepancies between the migratory tracks reconstructed from this and previous electronic tagging studies suggest that the bluefin tuna Mediterranean population may comprise distinct units exhibiting differing migratory behaviours. The diving behaviour varied between oceanic regions throughout the migratory pathways, the shallowest distribution taking place in the spawning ground and the deepest at the Strait of Gibraltar. A unique diving pattern was found on the majority of nights while the fish stayed at the spawning ground; it consisted of frequent and brief oscillatory movements up and down through the mixed layer, resulting in thermal profiles characterized by oscillations about the thermocline. Such a pattern is believed to reflect recent courtship and spawning activity. Reproductive parameters inferred from the analysis of vertical profiles are consistent with those estimated in previous studies based on biological samples. 相似文献

Despite the resolving power of DNA markers, pelagic and migratory marine fish species generally show very little geographical population structuring. In mackerel (Scomber scombrus L.) population differentiation has been detected only at a transatlantic scale. By applying two regions in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) (D-loop and cytochrome b (cytb)) in combination with genealogical and frequency-based statistical approaches, our data suggest population differentiation among eastern Atlantic spawning stocks. In contrast, and indicative of homing behaviour, no genetic structuring was observed among shoals of individuals outside the spawning season. Among spawning stocks, mtDNA D-loop sequences detected differentiation within the eastern Atlantic, while the cytb gene detected transatlantic differentiation. The impact of recurrent events (e.g. gene flow restricted by isolation by distance) and historic events (e.g. population range expansions) among spawning stocks was investigated applying a nested cladistic analysis of geographical distribution of cytb haplotype lineages. In the eastern Atlantic, historical population range expansion, presumably in connection with recolonization of northern areas after the last glaciation, is suggested to be the main factor determining mtDNA lineage distribution. This was supported by estimates of mtDNA nucleotide diversity, where the highest diversity was observed for the stock spawning in the Bay of Biscay, for which the size estimate is only 15% of the largest stock (Celtic Sea). In addition to revealing population differentiation, our data demonstrate the importance of sampling strategy and the power of applying statistical methods addressing both ongoing and historical population processes. 相似文献

Muscle proteases from mackerel and milkfish were purified to electrophoretical homogeneity by concanavalin A-Sepharose and Sephadex G-100 chromatographies. Both proteases appear to be an aspartic protease, cathepsin D (EC 3.4.23.5). The molecular weights of the purified cathepsin D’s from mackerel and milkfish were 51,000 and 54,000, estimated by Sephadex G-100, and 59,000 and 61,000 by SDS–PAGE, respectively. Both cathepsin D’s were completely inhibited by pepstatin, but not affected by leupeptin, N-ethylmaleimide, dithiothreitol, or glutathione. ß-Mercaptoethanol, iodoacetic acid, p-chloromercuri-benzoate, phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, and sodium dodecyl sulfate partially or completely inhibited both cathepsin D’s. Na+ and K+ partially activated the cathepsin D from milkfish. Both cathepsin D’s were inhibited by Mg2+, Sr2+, Fe2+, and H2+, but activated by Ca2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+. The pI and optimal temperature of the cathepsin D’s from mackerel and milkfish were 5.04 and 4.91, 45°, and 50°C, respectively. The temperatures for inactivating 50% activity of the cathepsin D’s from mackerel and milkfish during 20 min of incubation were 53° and 48°C, respectively. Both cathepsin D’s had similar optimal pHs near 3. The activity of that from milkfish markedly decreased when the pH was higher than 4, and was almost completely lost at pH above 6, while that from mackerel still had at least 40% activity at pH 6. 相似文献

The demersal fish community on a flatfish nursery ground, of the Southern Bight of the North Sea, was sampled monthly between May 1998 and 1999. The studied coastal area is a multispecific nursery area. Although 32 fish species were caught, only nine species had a major influence on the variation in total densities through the year and can be considered as key species. Juvenile sole and plaice exhibited similar seasonal growth patterns with rapid growth during late spring and summer, a growth arrest during autumn and winter and a restart of growth in March. Comparisons of observed growth in length with predicted maximal growth under optimal food conditions suggested that during the summer, growth of 0-group sole and plaice was only determined by prevailing mean water temperature. During autumn and winter, while growth in length of sole followed model predictions, observed length of plaice was less than model predictions, suggesting growth limitation. Analyses of the factors that may be responsible for differences between observed and expected length growth indicated that autumn and winter growth arrest of plaice was not only related to low winter water temperature. It is suggested that for visual feeders such as plaice, the interaction of decreasing food availability and day length during autumn and winter can reduce the access to food resource and therefore feeding success and growth. 相似文献

The deep-sea red crab Chaceon quinquedens is a commercially important crustacean on the Atlantic continental shelf and slope of North America. To assess genetic subdivision in C. quinquedens, we examined the nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA gene and the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal repeat in samples from southern New England and the Gulf of Mexico. We compared those data to sequences from two congeners, a sympatric species from the Florida coast, C. fenneri, and an allopatric eastern Atlantic species, C. affinis. The 16S rDNA data consisted of 379 aligned nucleotides obtained from 37 individuals. The greatest genetic difference among geographical groups or nominal species was between C. quinquedens from southern New England and C. quinquedens from the Gulf of Mexico. Haplotypes from these two groups had a minimum of 10 differences. All 11 C. fenneri samples matched the most common haplotype found in C. quinquedens from the Gulf of Mexico, and this haplotype was not detected in C. quinquedens from southern New England. The three haplotypes of C. affinis were unique to that recognized species, but those haplotypes differed only slightly from those of C. fenneri and C. quinquedens from the Gulf of Mexico. Based on 16S rDNA and ITS data, genetic differences between C. quinquedens from southern New England and the Gulf of Mexico are large enough to conclude that these are different fishery stocks. Our results also indicate that the designation of morphological species within the commercially important genus Chaceon is not congruent with evolutionary history. The genetic similarity of C. affinis from the eastern Atlantic and C. quinquedens from the Gulf of Mexico suggests these trans-Atlantic taxa share a more recent common history than the two populations of "C. quinquedens" that we examined. 相似文献

Summary Atrial and ventricular muscle in the pike and mackerel hearts consists of narrow, branching cells. The atrial cells in the two species are similar whereas the ventricular cells differ. The sarcolemma is attached to the Z and M lines of the sarcomere. Intercalated discs are common, and the transverse parts display desmosomes and intermediate junctions. Nexuses are uncommon and only occur in the longitudinal parts of the intercalated discs. The sarcoplasmic reticulum forms a regular hexagonal network on the myofibrillar surface. Subsarcolemmal cisternae form peripheral couplings at the I-A level. Junctional processes are usually inconspicuous, but an electron dense substance is present between the sarcolemma and the Junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum. The aim of the present study was to investigate the fisheries biology of Scomber japonicus (Houttuyn, 1782) in the Adriatic Sea, to enable implementation of appropriate regulatory measures for fisheries. Reproductive biology and sexual patterns of S. japonicus (chub mackerel) were examined from monthly random samples of commercial catches from purse seine nets (10 mm stretched mesh size) in the eastern Adriatic Sea. The annual mean chub mackerel fork length (FL) was examined from 1998 to 2007. Average fork lengths were approximately 25 cm between 1998 and 2002, decreasing to 22 cm between 2003 and 2007. In addition, sex ratios fluctuated as a function of size and month: females were more abundant in the smaller length classes, as well as before and after spawning; males were more abundant in the larger length classes and during spawning. The overall sex ratio was 0.68; females were significantly predominant. 50% of the chub mackerel population was sexually mature at a FL of 18.3 cm, and both males and females reached sexual maturity at FLs of 20.4 cm and 16.8 cm, respectively. Based on gonad maturity stages, gonad weight and gonadosomatic index, chub mackerel spawned from May to August, with peak spawning in June for both sexes. The mean absolute fecundity was 181 277 ± 62 090 oocytes per ovary. A positive exponential correlation was found between fecundity and fork length, gonad weight, and total chub mackerel weight (r2 = 0.640; r2 = 0.686 and r2 = 0.607, respectively). 相似文献

A means of obtaining erythrocytes from larval fish and the blood of larvae of two fish species are described. Erythrocytes were obtained for cytological preparations from larvae of Urophycis chuss (Walbaum) and Scomber scombrus (Linnaeus) as small as 2.0 mm. Heart and gills were dissected from the larvae, stained, and flattened into a monolayer on a microscope slide. Mature erythrocytes were the only blood cell type observed in either heart or gill preparations, and these appeared to be the same as in the adult fish. Mature erythrocytes can be isolated from formalinfixed larvae, even as sorted from plankton, and prepared for cytological and cytogenetic study and for blood cell counts. Knowledge gained from the study of erythrocytes from larval teleosts can be important in assessing the normality and health of these early-life stages of fish in either laboratory assays or field studies. The method described is applicable to other fish species, even after years of storage in formalin fixative. 相似文献

SUMMARY. Atlantic salmon fry have been annually stocked into Llyn Dwythwch, North Wales, since 1969, in an attempt to increase the natural stocks of the area. The growth and survival of 1- and 2-year-old salmon were investigated, and compared with that of other lake-reared populations and also with salmon in the natural stream environment. Lake-reared salmon follow the same patterns of slow and rapid growth as found for river fish, but the growth rate was superior in the former. The variation in length – weight relationship with age and sex was investigated. Survival rates in general compared favourably with the survival in rivers, with high mortality rates of salmon in Llyn Dwythwch resulting from predation at spring stocking by the resident brown trout. Genetic variation was examined within and among North Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic populations of the benthic red alga Phycodrys rubens using allozymes and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. On western and eastern North Atlantic coasts distinct allozyme types were found, with the exception of western Newfoundland where East and West Atlantic types co-occur. Along the European coasts, two genetic groups were distinguished by fixed allelic differences: an outer oceanic group and a North Sea/Baltic group. The two genetic types co-occur in the Skagerrak and Kattegat region. Reproductive isolation between the two types is suggested by the lack of hybrids in the overlap zones, and they may therefore represent sibling species. Unexpectedly, an analysis of RAPD variation was unable to recover the two cryptic species identified using allozymes. Within-population RAPD variation was similar to or greater than between-population variation. The lack of structure in the RAPD data cannot be attributed solely to technical artefacts of the method but appears to reflect real biological variability. Within-population genomic polymorphisms caused by frequent mutational events are discussed, as are high amounts of genetic drift and possible disruptive selection brought about by stressed habitats. Finally, Baltic and extra-Baltic salinity ecotypes are known to exist in P. rubens. However, no correlation between ecotypic variation and allozyme groups was detected. 相似文献

In Norway spruce, a fungistatic reaction zone with a high pH and enrichment of phenolics is formed in the sapwood facing heartwood colonized by the white-rot fungus Heterobasidion parviporum. Fungal penetration of the reaction zone eventually results in expansion of this xylem defense. To obtain information about mechanisms operating upon heartwood and reaction zone colonization by the pathogen, hyphal growth and wood degradation were investigated using real-time PCR, microscopy, and comparative wood density analysis of naturally colonized trees with extensive stem decay. The hyphae associated with delignified wood at stump level were devoid of any extracellular matrix, whereas incipient decay at the top of decay columns was characterized by a carbohydrate-rich hyphal sheath attaching hyphae to tracheid walls. The amount of pathogen DNA peaked in aniline wood, a narrow darkened tissue at the colony border apparently representing a compromised region of the reaction zone. Vigorous production of pathogen conidiophores occurred in this region. Colonization of aniline wood was characterized by hyphal growth within polyphenolic lumen deposits in tracheids and rays, and the hyphae were fully encased in a carbohydrate-rich extracellular matrix. Together, these data indicate that the interaction of the fungus with the reaction zone involves a local concentration of fungal biomass that forms an efficient translocation channel for nutrients. Finally, the enhanced production of the hyphal sheath may be instrumental in lateral expansion of the decay column beyond the reaction zone boundary.To grow to great heights, trees continually replace their water- and nutrient-conducting elements. Older elements, such as the heartwood that is formed in many trees, gradually become nonconductive. In contrast to the living sapwood, heartwood lacks active defense mechanisms against microbes. However, lignin, the polymer coating cell wall polysaccharides, is highly resistant to microbial degradation. In fact, white-rot fungi, besides having evolved the ability to tolerate or detoxify the secondary metabolites accumulating in heartwood, are the only organisms capable of efficiently degrading lignin. Following establishment in the heartwood of living trees, the colonies of pathogenic white-rot fungi expand and eventually also threaten the conductive sapwood.The white-rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum sensu lato, composed of three species with overlapping geographic distributions and host ranges in Europe (23), is the most important pathogen of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) in boreal forests. Primary infection of Norway spruce stands by H. annosum sensu lato takes place through fresh thinning stumps or wounds on roots and at the base of the stem. Basidiospores landing on these entrance points give rise to mycelia which colonize the root systems, and eventually the fungus spreads into the stem heartwood. At sites infested with Heterobasidion parviporum, a species primarily restricted to Norway spruce, roots of saplings can become infected by the fungus after around 10 years of growth (25). Stem colonization usually initiates only after the heartwood has started to develop, which in Norway spruce takes place in trees 25 to 40 years old (17). Due to relatively rapid axial spread within heartwood, the decay column caused by H. annosum sensu lato often is up to 10 m high in the stems of mature Norway spruce trees.In response to sapwood challenge by an expanding heartwood-based colony of H. annosum sensu lato, Norway spruce forms a so-called reaction zone (RZ) in the border area between healthy sapwood and colonized heartwood. This xylem defense is characterized by high pH due to increased carbonate content and enrichment of phenolic compounds, particularly lignans, some of which have shown antifungal properties in bioassays (14, 30, 31). Although several wood decay fungi are able to eventually penetrate the RZ regions formed in trees, the strategies employed by fungi to breach these unique defense barriers are poorly understood (24). The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the mechanisms operating in heartwood colonization and expansion of the decay column via penetration of the RZ. Diversity within Serogroups of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viceae in the Palouse Region of Eastern Washington as Indicated by Plasmid Profiles, Intrinsic Antibiotic Resistance, and Topography

Serology, plasmid profiles, and intrinsic antibiotic resistance (IAR) were determined for 192 isolates of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viceae from nodules of peas (Pisum sativum L.) grown on the south slope and bottomland topographic positions in eastern Washington State. A total of 3 serogroups and 18 plasmid profile groups were identified. Nearly all isolates within each plasmid profile group were specific for one of the three serogroups. Cluster analysis of IAR data showed that individual clusters were dominated by one serogroup and by one or two plasmid profile groups. Plasmid profile analysis and IAR analysis grouped 72% of the isolates similarly. Most plasmid profile groups and several IAR clusters favored either the south slope or the bottomland topographic position. These findings show that certain intraserogroup strains possess a greater competitiveness for nodulation and/or possess a greater ability to survive in adjacent soil environments. 相似文献

This study presents the first results on Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) individual spawning duration and its short-term temporal behavior. The study was based on direct measurements resulting from mtDNA analysis of the offspring of spawners held in transport cages during the 2013 spawning monitoring survey in Balearic waters. The number of females consisted of approximately 259 individuals with an average weight of 186 kg. The survey began on May 22 and ended on July 3. Spawning started on May 30 and was observed every night afterwards. The sampling of eggs for genetic monitoring was conducted for 9 days interspersed from the beginning of spawning to the end of the survey. A total of 946 eggs were analyzed and revealed 129 different haplotypes; 77 of these were not previously detected in the Mediterranean. A total of 69 haplotypes were observed in more than one spawning event and those with higher frequency lasted their maximum possible duration. The haplotypes present at the beginning of spawning were also identified at the end of the sampling, indicating a minimum spawning duration of 34 days, and individual annual fecundity was estimated at around 1290 eggs gr-1. These results differed from those generally presumed until now and are indicative of a much higher fecundity. Females exhibited a regular spawning schedule but with the capacity to shift the spawning hour during the spawning season. These results were observed for the eastern population of Atlantic bluefin tuna and before extrapolating to the western population, their validity should be proved. 相似文献

Examination of the reproductive organs from 137 Common porpoises ( Phocoena phocoena ) from the Gulf of St Lawrence, the Bay of Fundy and British waters has enabled observations to be made on reproductive events. Birth in Canadian waters occurs mainly in June and July: mating takes place from june to August . The evidence indicates that females do not become pregnant every year. Birth length is 80 to 90cm; juveniles attain a length of 100 to 110 cm after three to four months. Sexual maturity is reached at a length of about 133 cm in males and 145 cm in females, probably in their third or fourth year. The corpus luteum persists throughout gestation and retrogresses from their histological characteristics. One kind possesses much acellular material and is probably a corpus albicans gravitadionis; the other consists of a mass of obliterated vessels and is the remains either of a corpus luteum of an infertile ovulation or of a lutealized follicle. Evidence indicates that there is seasonal testicular activity, reaching a maximum during July and subsiding in late August. 相似文献

The parasite fauna of the chub mackerel Scomber japonicus Houtuym, 1782 was studied from the neritic areas of Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and from the banks of the Azores Archipelago (the Great Meteor Bank, the Hyeres Bank and the Irving Bank) in 1994-2001. Twenty eight species of parasites of following group have been were found: Coccidia (1 species), Microsporidia (1), Myxosporea (4), Monogenea (4), Cestoda (5), Trematoda (5), Acanthocephala (1) and Nematoda (6). The differences between mackerel parasite fauna in the neritic areas and from of the Azores Archipelago banks were established. Peculiarities of the mackerel parasite fauna in two areas (Morocco--Western Sahara and Mauritania) corroborate the hypothesis that two populations of chub mackerel are available: Sahara-Moroccan and Senegal-Mauritanian. Ontogenetic variability of parasite fauna was related to food demands of mackerel and its feeding habits in the areas Morocco and Mauritania. Kudoa histolytica has negative influence on the commercial value of S. japonicus. These parasites were localized in the muscles of mackerel from Mauritania (40%, TL = 20-25 cm). Parasites being dangerous for human health were presented by larvae of Bolbosoma sp. (occurred on the banks of the Azores Archipelago), Anisakis simplex and Contracaecum sp. With the exception of relatively brief periods when they reproduce and moult, hooded seals, Cystophora cristata, spend most of the year in the open ocean where they undergo feeding migrations to either recover or prepare for the next fasting period. Valuable insights into habitat use and diving behaviour during these periods have been obtained by attaching Satellite Relay Data Loggers (SRDLs) to 51 Northwest (NW) Atlantic hooded seals (33 females and 18 males) during ice-bound fasting periods (2004−2008). Using General Additive Models (GAMs) we describe habitat use in terms of First Passage Time (FPT) and analyse how bathymetry, seasonality and FPT influence the hooded seals’ diving behaviour described by maximum dive depth, dive duration and surface duration. Adult NW Atlantic hooded seals exhibit a change in diving activity in areas where they spend >20 h by increasing maximum dive depth, dive duration and surface duration, indicating a restricted search behaviour. We found that male and female hooded seals are spatially segregated and that diving behaviour varies between sexes in relation to habitat properties and seasonality. Migration periods are described by increased dive duration for both sexes with a peak in May, October and January. Males demonstrated an increase in dive depth and dive duration towards May (post-breeding/pre-moult) and August–October (post-moult/pre-breeding) but did not show any pronounced increase in surface duration. Females dived deepest and had the highest surface duration between December and January (post-moult/pre-breeding). Our results suggest that the smaller females may have a greater need to recover from dives than that of the larger males. Horizontal segregation could have evolved as a result of a resource partitioning strategy to avoid sexual competition or that the energy requirements of males and females are different due to different energy expenditure during fasting periods. 相似文献
