Two almost complete and articulated skeletons of a small-sized 15-year-old shorthorn ox and of a 3-4-year-old dog were found associated to Iron Age human burials at Madonna del Piano, in Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence. The two skeletons were ritually buried. The find adds to another case of cattle burial also found in the area, and therefore attests to a penetration and persistence of late Neolithic and Bronze Age northern and eastern European practices in Italy. The specimens provide important evidence on the habits and believes of Iron Age circum-Mediterranean human populations. The ox reveals that castration was accomplished late in the animal’s growth, but also that cattle were used for heavy work, though being worshiped animals.  相似文献

The current interpretation of Bronze Age metalwork deposits relies on an opposition between deposits made ritually and those made with the utilitarian objective of temporary safe keeping. Tied to this distinction were the intentions, respectively, to leave buried in perpetuity, or to retrieve. Contrasts in the character and burial location of hoard deposits are used to support the dichotomous interpretation. The article challenges this bipolar model by showing that hoard characterization often reflects a more complex spectrum and by disputing that the recovery of valuables by depositors would invalidate ritual objectives. Furthermore, in considering the flow of metal through the exchange systems of Bronze Age Europe, it is argued that flexibility of intention at and after deposition would have been an invaluable strategic device, enabling greater control over the local metal stock. To extract the full meaning locked up in these crucial archaeological deposits for the period, their interpretation is better centred on new questions relating to expression, occasion, enactment , and the social conditions triggering recovery .  相似文献

采用马和驴mtDNA中特异性片段引物 ,利用聚合酶链反应技术 (polymerasechainreaction ,PCR) ,建立了饲料中马属动物源性动物成分的快速检测方法。通过内切酶HaeⅢ、Sau3A和AluⅠ可对扩增结果进行验证并能够区分马成分和驴成分。扩增产物测序结果表明 :驴扩增产物序列与数据库序列完全一致 ,马样品扩增产物与数据库序列的同源性达 99%。该方法的检测低限分别为 0 5 %(w w)和 0 2 5 %(w w) ,可作为食品及饲料中马属动物成分鉴别检测的有效方法。  相似文献

Multiple geographical regions have been proposed for the domestication of Equus caballus . It has been suggested, based on zooarchaeological and genetic analyses that wild horses from the Iberian Peninsula were involved in the process, and the overrepresentation of mitochondrial D1 cluster in modern Iberian horses supports this suggestion. To test this hypothesis, we analysed mitochondrial DNA from 22 ancient Iberian horse remains belonging to the Neolithic, the Bronze Age and the Middle Ages, against previously published sequences. Only the medieval Iberian sequence appeared in the D1 group. Neolithic and Bronze Age sequences grouped in other clusters, one of which (Lusitano group C) is exclusively represented by modern horses of Iberian origin. Moreover, Bronze Age Iberian sequences displayed the lowest nucleotide diversity values when compared with modern horses, ancient wild horses and other ancient domesticates using nonparametric bootstrapping analyses. We conclude that the excessive clustering of Bronze Age horses in the Lusitano group C, the observed nucleotide diversity and the local continuity from wild Neolithic Iberian to modern Iberian horses, could be explained by the use of local wild mares during an early Iberian domestication or restocking event, whereas the D1 group probably was introduced into Iberia in later historical times.  相似文献

1. The donkey postalbumin protein has been shown to be the equivalent of human alpha 1 B-glycoprotein by protein immunoblotting and N-terminal amino acid sequence. 2. The horse A1B system (already identified as the homologue of human alpha 1 B-glycoprotein) and the donkey alpha 1 B-glycoprotein were characterized further for terminal sialic acid content, isoelectric point, amino acid composition and affinity for the dye-ligand, Cibacron Blue F3GA (known to bind human alpha 1 B-glycoprotein). 3. Two new alleles in the horse A1B system were found, bringing the total number of alleles to five. No polymorphism was found in the donkey alpha 1 B system. 4. As expected the first 20 N-terminal residues of the donkey and horse proteins are highly conserved with only two differences being found. 5. The polymorphism of the horse alpha 1 B-glycoproteins may be due in part to differing numbers of terminal sialic acid residues and the higher electrophoretic mobility of the donkey alpha 1 B-glycoprotein may be due in part to increased sialylation. 6. The horse and donkey alpha 1 B-glycoproteins exhibited differences in affinity for the dye-ligand, Cibacron Blue F3GA, with the donkey alpha 1 B-glycoprotein not being bound.  相似文献

Embryo transfer (ET) in the donkey resulted in a very low recipient pregnancy rates. The aim of these studies was to investigate if nonsurgical transfer techniques or donkey embryo quality affect donkey recipient pregnancy failure. In Study 1, the impact of transfer technique was investigated by evaluating if cervical catheterization is associated with prostaglandin release and suppression of luteal function and if donkey recipients would become pregnant after nonsurgical transfer of horse embryos. Four jennies, from 5 to 8 d after ovulation, were submitted to a sham transcervical ET and to evaluation of PGFM and progesterone plasma concentrations. Five 8 d horse embryos were nonsurgically transferred into synchronized donkey recipients (HD). Cervical stimulation caused a transient PGF release in two of four jennies in the absence of a significant decrease in progesterone plasma concentration. All transferred horse embryos resulted in pregnancies in the jenny recipients. In Study 2, donkey embryo viability was investigated by 1.2 meters, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining of 10 embryos and by the transfer of 6 and 12 donkey embryos in synchronized mare (DH) and donkey (DD) recipients, respectively, of known fertility. The estimated proportion of dead cells in DAPI stained embryos was 0.9% (range 0-3.9%) and below what is considered normal (20%) for horse embryos. Three of six and six of 12 of the DH and DD ETs, respectively resulted in pregnancies at 14 and 25 d (50%), a higher pregnancy rate than previously reported after DD ET. The overall results of this study suggest that the transcervical technique for ET and donkey embryo viability are not the reasons for the low pregnancy rates that have previously been described in donkey recipients, and that nonsurgical ET in donkeys can result in acceptable results.  相似文献

Thirteen Middle Bronze Age IIa and four Late Bronze Age IIb (ca. 1950-1750 B.C. and thirteenth century, B.C., respectively)pieces of charcoal or water logged wood were found in the recent excavations of Tel Nami, a small port on the coast near Mount Carmel, Israel. These includedCedrus libani (cedar of Lebanon) (three samples), and local tree species that still grow today in the vicinity of the site—Pinus halepensis (Aleppo pine) (one sample),Olea europaea (olive tree) (five samples),Quercus calliprinos (kermes oak) (three samples),Quercus ithaburensis (Mt. Tabor oak) (four samples), andQuercus sp. (one sample). The discovery of Cedrus libani in a Middle Bronze Age IIa port is one of the earliest published examples of cedar wood from Israel. Together with other artifactual evidence for maritime trade from Tel Nami, this find suggests that a maritime trade in cedar wood existed along the Levantine coast.  相似文献

Aromatase distribution in membranes of preimplantation horse and donkey conceptuses was compared by measuring the incorporation of [3H]androstenedione into oestrone and oestradiol-17 beta. In the donkey conceptus, aromatase activity was similar in all the tissues examined (yolk sac, chorionic girdle and allantochorion), whereas in the horse it was generally lower and showed the relationship chorionic girdle greater than yolk sac greater than allantochorion. A higher proportion of labelled precursor was incorporated into oestradiol-17 beta by extra-embryonic tissues of the donkey compared with those of the horse. In contrast to previous results, aromatase in the chorionic girdle did not decline progressively before its migration into the endometrium on Day 36 to form the endometrial cups. The chorionic girdle of a donkey conceptus carried in the uterus of a mare failed to invade the surrogate horse endometrium and aromatase activity was still high in this tissue at Day 42. Aromatase distribution in 2 transferred donkey-in-horse conceptuses resembled that of the fetal, rather than the maternal, genotype indicating a lack of effect of the maternal environment.  相似文献

The transition from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age in Central Europe has often been considered as a supra-regional uniform process, which led to the growing mastery of the new bronze technology. Since the 1920s, archaeologists have divided the Early Bronze Age into two chronological phases (Bronze A1 and A2), which were also seen as stages of technical progress. On the basis of the early radiocarbon dates from the cemetery of Singen, southern Germany, the beginning of the Early Bronze Age in Central Europe was originally dated around 2300/2200 BC and the transition to more complex casting techniques (i.e., Bronze A2) around 2000 BC. On the basis of 140 newly radiocarbon dated human remains from Final Neolithic, Early and Middle Bronze Age cemeteries south of Augsburg (Bavaria) and a re-dating of ten graves from the cemetery of Singen, we propose a significantly different dating range, which forces us to re-think the traditional relative and absolute chronologies as well as the narrative of technical development. We are now able to date the beginning of the Early Bronze Age to around 2150 BC and its end to around 1700 BC. Moreover, there is no transition between Bronze (Bz) A1 and Bronze (Bz) A2, but a complete overlap between the type objects of the two phases from 1900–1700 BC. We thus present a revised chronology of the assumed diagnostic type objects of the Early Bronze Age and recommend a radiocarbon-based view on the development of the material culture. Finally, we propose that the traditional phases Bz A1 and Bz A2 do not represent a chronological sequence, but regionally different social phenomena connected to the willingness of local actors to appropriate the new bronze technology.  相似文献

The discovery of the Nuragic culture settlement of Sa Osa, Cabras-Oristano, Sardinia, has made it possible to investigate the domestication status of waterlogged uncharred grape pips that were recovered from three wells dating from the Middle and Late Bronze Age (ca. 1350–1150 bc). Applying the stepwise linear discriminant analysis method, a morphological comparison of archaeological seeds and modern wild and cultivated Sardinian grapes pips was performed to determine the similarities between them. The results showed that the archaeological seeds from the Middle Bronze Age have intermediate morphological traits between modern wild and cultivated grape pips from Sardinia. In contrast, the analyses performed on the archaeological seeds from the Late Bronze Age showed a high degree of similarity with the modern cultivars in Sardinia. These results provide the first evidence of primitive cultivated Vitis vinifera in Sardinia during the Late Bronze Age (1286–1115 cal bc, 2σ). This evidence may support the hypothesis that Sardinia could have been a secondary domestication centre of the grapevine, due to the presence of ancient cultivars that still exhibit the phenotypic characteristics of wild grapes.  相似文献

Haemoglobin from donkey was purified and crystallized in space group C2. The present donkey haemoglobin model comprises of two subunits alpha and beta. These alpha and beta subunits comprise of 141 and 146 amino acid residues, respectively, and the haem groups. The donkey haemoglobin differs from horse only in two amino acids of alpha-chain (His20 to Asn and Tyr24 to Phe) and these substitutions do not significantly change the secondary structural features of donkey haemoglobin. The haem group region and subunit contacts are closely resemble with that of horse methaemoglobin.  相似文献

The fast and slow components of horse, donkey, and mule hemoglobin were analyzed by mapping of tryptic peptides. The two horse components share a common beta chain but differ in the alpha chain. Donkey hemoglobin differs from the slow horse component by replacement of histidine by asparagine in position 20 and replacement of a glycine residue by alanine in peptide V. Mapping of mule hemoglobins indicates that (1) the slow mule component contains the alpha and the beta chains of the slow horse component and the alpha and beta chains of the donkey, and (2) the fast mule component contains the alpha chain of the fast horse component and the beta chains of both the horse and the donkey. It is concluded that all six theoretically possible tetrameric combinations of the polypeptide chains encoded by the horse and donkey parental genes are formed in the mule.  相似文献

The eastern part of the region of West Friesland (The Netherlands) was densely inhabited in the Middle and Late Bronze Age (Hoogkarspel culture). In the whole of this area, Iron Age settlement has only been found around Opperdoes. Carbonized plant remains from features associated with a pre-Roman Iron Age house near Opperdoes are discussed and compared with Bronze Age data from the region. The evidence suggests that the Iron Age food economy was different from that in the Bronze Age. Barley and linseed were possibly imported, while gold-of-pleasure was cultivated at the site.  相似文献

A total of 32 loci comprising specific genes, microsatellites and anonymous BAC clones from horse and cattle were mapped on donkey chromosomes. Of these, 13 markers were also mapped for the first time in the horse. This information, together with that previously available in donkey and horse updates the comparative status of the karyotypes of the two species. The findings of the present study for the first time show correlation between eleven equine acrocentric autosomes and the donkey chromosomes and in part enable detection of rearrangements between them. There are still 7-8 pairs of chromosomes/arms for which no correspondence is known. At least 20 chromosome rearrangements (inversions, fusions and fissions) are already identified that differentiate the two karyotypes. More will be known once complete correspondence is deduced between them. These observations match similar differences observed between human-gibbon and mouse-rat karyotypes that show considerable rearrangements in relation to each other. How donkey and horse karyotypes gathered these differences within a short period of 5-10 Myr since divergence from a common ancestor will be known only after an ancestral equid karyotype is deduced, and the direction of change leading to chromosome rearrangements is clearly understood.  相似文献

This paper reports on seeds of Lallemantia (Lamiaceae) found at Bronze Age sites in northern Greece. At several of these sites, the seeds were found in significant concentrations in storage contexts, suggesting that they were deliberately stored for use by the inhabitants. Oil from the seeds of Lallemantia can be used for a variety of purposes, including food, lighting and medicine. This genus is not native to Greece, the nearest modern occurrences of Lallemantia species being in Anatolia from where they extend further east as far as Iran, or beyond. To date, it has not been found in Neolithic deposits in Greece, despite significant archaeobotanical research, especially in northern Greece. This suggests that it first appeared in Greece in the early Bronze Age, and indicates long distance contacts with communities to the east or north at this time. It is difficult to establish whether its continued use indicates that seeds of this genus were repeatedly brought into Greece throughout the Bronze Age or that the genus was introduced in the early Bronze Age and then locally cultivated. The presence of seeds, however, may suggest that Lallemantia was locally cultivated, as it would have been possible to import it in the form of oil. The appearance of a new import or introduction at this time adds to the evidence for external contact during the Bronze Age. Lallemantia may have been part of a group of oil producing taxa which became significant during the Bronze Age in northern Greece paralleling the increased importance of the olive in southern Greece.  相似文献

The X chromosomes of the extant equids, in general, share morphology and banding pattern similarities. However, the donkey X is, in part, an exception because of significantly different centromeric index and variant banding patterns in the pericentromeric region. To verify the underlying molecular basis of this difference, twelve equine BAC clones were FISH mapped to donkey (EAS) and Hartmann's mountain zebra (EZH) metaphase spreads. Loci from the terminal region of Xp and distal to terminal regions of the Xq showed the same order and relative position in all three species, implying cross-species conservation of these chromosomal segments. However, loci from the proximal/pericentromeric regions of either arms showed similar FISH locations in horse and zebra but a slightly deviant location and relative position in the donkey. Three of the markers (tel-OTC, TRAP170 and (ps)ALDH2- cen) located on the short arm of ECAX and EZHX were found inverted on the long arm of EASX, along with the transposition of the centromere. This molecular evidence of a pericentromeric inversion helps define the likely evolutionary breakpoints causing the rearrangement. The breakpoints most likely correspond to the region between Xp16-->q12 in the horse and Xp12-->q13 in the donkey. The findings coupled with the highly conserved X-chromosome gene order between horse and outgroup species, human and cat, suggest that the equine type X is ancestral while the asine type X arose as a result of an independent inversion event. The study adds two new markers to horse, 11 to donkey and 12 to Hartmann's zebra gene maps, thus contributing to the expansion of comparative maps in the equids.  相似文献

Three genomic subclones derived from a phage clone containing the equine IGF2 gene were used to FISH map the gene on horse (ECA) and donkey (EAS) metaphase chromosomes. The gene mapped on ECA 12q13 band and is the first locus mapped to this horse chromosome. In donkey the gene mapped very terminal on the long arm of one small submetacentric chromosome that shows almost identical DAPI-banding pattern with ECA12. This is the first locus mapped in donkey genome. Cross species chromosome painting of equine metaphase chromosomes with human Chromosome (Chr) 11-specific probe showed homoeology of this human chromosome with ECA12 and ECA7. The novel ECA12 comparative painting results are thus in accordance with the localization of the equine IGF2 gene. Comparison of the hitherto known physical locations of IGF2 in different species, viz. human, cattle, sheep, horse, and donkey, shows that this gene tends to maintain a terminal location on the chromosome arm. During recent archaeological excavations in the alpine valley of Montafon, western Austria, a Bronze and early Iron Age settlement cluster located at about 1,000 m a.s.l. was excavated. The human impact on the woodland resulting from these prehistoric settlement activities has been evaluated by the analysis of charred plant macro remains from cultural layers from a hilltop settlement site and two other close-by settlements, all of them encompassing the Early and Middle Bronze Age (19th to 15th century cal. b.c.) and early Iron Age (6th/5th century cal. b.c.). Charred seeds and fruits have provided information on the supply of foodstuff while charcoal (anthracological) analyses of firewood have revealed the use of wood and consequently the changes in local woods. The latter analyses suggest that the spruce-fir woodland (Piceeto-Abietetum) was gradually cleared from the Early Bronze Age. During the Middle Bronze Age large amounts of Pinus sylvestris (pine), Betula (birch), Corylus avellana (hazel) and Sorbus (rowan) with some Picea abies (spruce) characterized the woods, and early succession stages indicate clearings. These anthracological studies are corroborated by pollen studies disclosing clearings in the woods since the Early Bronze Age, which gradually expanded during the Middle Bronze Age. Furthermore, several charcoals from a Middle Bronze Age hearth seem to be of the same age, and the pattern of their annual growth-rings suggests the pollarding of broadleaved trees.  相似文献

Up to now, archaeobotanical investigations of prehistoric sites in the eastern Alpine region have been rare. Recent palaeoethnobotanical investigations of carbonised plant remains from two Bronze Age hill-top settlements, one located north and the other south of the main Alpine range, contribute essentially to the knowledge of subsistence strategies and husbandry regimes in the Alps in prehistoric periods. The principal cereals were Hordeum vulgare (hulled barley), Triticum dicoccon (emmer) and Panicum miliaceum (broomcorn millet). In general, hulled barley was the most important cereal crop in the eastern Alps. Legumes such as Vicia faba (horse bean) and Pisum sativum (pea) also occurred regularly in both hill-top settlements. In addition to these field crops, a large variety of wild plants was still gathered and contributed considerably to the daily diet. The arable weed flora suggests that crops were sown in spring and autumn and it indicates crop rotation in this period. The results of the plant macrofossils imply a complex pattern of plant resource utilisation in the Alpine area during the Bronze Age.  相似文献
