Head-bobbing walking (HBW) and non-bobbing walking (NBW) of black-headed gulls were compared from kinematic and behavioral/environmental viewpoints. The birds walked with a longer stride length and lower stride frequency during the HBW than during the NBW. With respect to these two parameters, the HBW of black-headed gulls was similar to that of other head-bobbers, and the NBW was similar to that of other non-bobbers. The stride length and the amplitude of head bobbing were correlated. These results suggest that the head-bobbing and gait parameters are related. From a behavioral viewpoint, HBW was observed during seeking-type foraging by wading, and NBW was observed during waiting-type foraging on a flat substrate. The type of foraging behavior and/or substrate condition probably determines whether the birds walk with or without head bobbing. 相似文献

Laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) were infected with Echinostoma paraensei (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae). The rodents received 150 metacercariae each and blood samples were collected weekly until the fifth week of infection. The blood samples were analyzed for determination of haematocrit, total red blood cells with their dimensions, haemoglobin and haematimetric index (mean corpuscular volume, MCV; mean corpuscular haemoglobin, MCH; and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, MCHC) and platelets. Red blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin in the first week had significantly lower levels than those of uninfected (control) rats, suggesting the development of normocytic and normocromic anaemia with anisocytic alteration. The number of eosinophils did not increase significantly among the groups. We concluded that E. paraensei produces haematological alterations in R. norvegicus, causing regenerative anaemia. This system can therefore be a useful model to study the direct and indirect effects of gastrointestinal infections. 相似文献

Landfill disposal of a fertilizer manufacturing waste product was associated with a die-off of gulls in New Hanover County, North Carolina. An estimated 250 herring and ring-billed gulls were found dead at the site following the initial disposal of this material. Chemical analyses revealed that the fertilizer waste contained predominately calcium (12.0 to 22.2%) and nitrite (3.0 to 15.2%). Contents of the proventriculi and gizzards of dead gulls also contained calcium (3.0 to 10.9%) and nitrite (1,730 ppm). Fertilizer waste administered orally to 16-day-old domestic turkeys resulted in acute, progressive signs of depression, respiratory distress, pallor, convulsions and death. The mean percentage methemoglobin in blood from convulsing turkeys (90.6) was significantly increased from that of normal control turkeys (3.6). The ante-mortem signs and increased blood methemoglobin concentrations in the experimental turkeys support the conclusion that the toxic principle in the fertilizer waste was nitrite, and that nitrite poisoning was the cause of the die-off of gulls. 相似文献

Eosinophilic meningitis caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonosis endemic to Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands. It is considered an emerging disease because it has been expanding both geographically and in terms of the range of hosts. In South America, the first cases were reported in Brazil and were attributed to eating infected snails. In this study, 70 adult females of Rattus norvegicus (Wistar) were used to evaluate hematology, blood gases, cardiac markers and lung histopathology changes caused by this parasite. Of them, 60 were individually infected by orogastric gavage with 100 L3 larvae and 10 uninfected animals formed the control group. The results obtained demonstrate that infection caused by A. cantonensis in R. norvegicus promotes significant hematological changes induced in the vertebrate host, manifested mainly in the form of regenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia and eosinophilia. Additionally, histopathological changes in the lung parenchyma demonstrated in rodents reveal the occurrence of areas of necrosis and extensive fibrosis, being directly related to the development of cellular hypoxia and enzyme cardiac changes. This study can contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between A. cantonensis and R. norvegicus. 相似文献

Larval recovery of Toxocara canis in organs and tissues of experimentally infected Rattus norvegicus
The aim of this note was to record for the first time the recovery of Toxocara canis larvae from tissues and organs of Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout, 1769), Wistar strain, until the 60th day after experimental infection. Rats were orally infected with embryonated T. canis eggs, killed on days 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, 30, and 60 after inoculation and larvae were recovered from liver, lungs, kidneys, brain, and carcass after acid digestion, showing a pattern of migration similar of that previously observed in mice. 相似文献

Worm recovery rate, mucosal mast cells (MMCs), eosinophils and serum IgE concentration in rats were investigated after orally feeding 300 Haplorchis taichui metacercariae to male rats. The duodenal, jejunal and ileal tissue sections were stained with 1% alcian blue and 0.5% safranin-O for MMC count. Eosinophil count and the serum IgE concentration assay were measured from cardiac puncture blood. The average worm recovery rates were 20.00%, 13.00%, 0.67%, 1.67% and 0.00% on day 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 post-infection (PI), respectively. The number of MMCs in the infected rats were significantly higher than in the controls (P < 0.01), reaching a peak on day 21 PI. They decreased thereafter, with the decline in worm recovery. Eosinophil count and Serum IgE concentration were also increased but not significantly higher than the controls. However, they showed a positive relationship to worm recovery. It could be concluded from the results that MMCs, eosinophils and IgE may play an important role in the expulsion of H. taichui from rat intestine. However, the mechanism by which the MMC result in the helminth expulsion still need to be understood, and it is recommended that other cells such as goblet cells be studied further. 相似文献

Hemoglobin phenotypes A and B were determined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of erythrocyte lysates from 29 inbred strains of rats. Fourteen strains have phenotype A and fifteen have phenotype B, which are characterized by five and six hemoglobin bands, respectively. Breeding studies showed that the phenotypes are codominant and that they segregate in a simple Mendelian fashion in the (A×B) F1×A backcross. Sex and hemoglobin phenotype assort independently, and the hemoglobin phenotype is not linked to the major histocompatibility complex (RT1) and to two erythrocyte alloantigenic systems (RT2 and RT3).This work was supported by National Institutes of Health Grant CA 18659. 相似文献

Southern blot hybridization of EcoRI digests of DNAs from 13 rat strains using human cardiac actin gene as a probe revealed polymorphisms in actin-related sequences of rats. EcoRI fragments of 11 kb, 7 kb, 6 kb, 5 kb, 4.5 kb and 4 kb detected in several strains were absent in the remaining strains. The presence of these fragments was suggested to be due to presence of extra sequences homologous to the actin genes, such as processed pseudogenes, in the particular strains. The 13 strains were assigned to each of 7 specific patterns of the polymorphic EcoRI fragments. It was concluded that the polymorphisms of actin-related sequences should be useful for genetic monitoring of laboratory rats. 相似文献

The processes of synapsis and synaptic adjustment have been detected in some structural and numerical anomalies in two female rat foetuses and in one male rat in the course of a study on X-ray genotoxicity. The synaptic characteristics and adjustment of one pericentric inversion and a deletion have been analysed by electron microscopy in synaptonemal complex spreads from two female foetuses, and the synaptic behaviour of a trisomy has been studied in a testicular biopsy from an adult male. In a large proportion (from 50% to 90%) of the analysed cells, the abnormal meiotic configuration could not be detected either because the anomaly was present in mosaic from trisomy or because synaptic adjustment had already taken place (inversion) or as result of a combination of two of the above (deletion). 相似文献

Abstract We experimentally examined the effect of testosterone on the antibody response to a single immunization with sheep red blood cells in young black-headed gulls. This species performs a number of testosterone-mediated elaborate postural displays in social interactions and breeds in dense colonies in which there is a high likelihood of infectious diseases. In young chicks, only one-third were capable of responding to immunization. In the responding chicks, testosterone enhanced antibody titers. Even when antibody responsiveness was measured >1 mo after the termination of hormonal treatment, antibody responses were enhanced in birds treated with androgen but not estrogen. At 9 mo of age, all birds responded to immunization, but there was no effect of testosterone on antibody titers. In these juveniles, frequency of display behavior was negatively related to changes in body mass, which suggests that displaying is energetically costly. Despite decreased body mass, antibody titers were highest in birds that displayed more frequently. This suggests that displaying signals immunocompetence. The results are discussed in relation to the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis and to what is known of the influence of the bursa of Fabricius and social stress on antibody production. 相似文献

In 93 Leptospira strains isolated from Norwegian rats serovar determination was made. As a result, leptospires circulating among Norwegian rats were found to belong mainly to serovar copenhageni, group Icterohaemorrhagiae, while leptospires of serovar icterohaemorrhagiae, even if occurring, were found only in the animals inhabiting pigsties. Leptospirosis epizooty among rats, caused by L. icterohaemorrhagiae, took its course independently of leptospirosis epizooty among mice, caused by L. hebdomadis, and simultaneously with it. 相似文献

Offspring survival probability usually decreases with hatching order, especially in species with brood reduction. Brood reduction in combination with a sex difference in embryonic period (the time between laying and hatching of an egg) can potentially have a profound effect on sex allocation, with higher investment in chicks of the early hatching sex because they are more likely to survive to fledge. Two recent studies reported sex differences in the embryonic period, but compared embryonic period between, rather than within, clutches, which does not control for possible environmental effects on both clutch sex ratio and embryonic period. We compared the embryonic period of sons and daughters within clutches in jackdaws Corvus monedula and black‐headed gulls Larus ridibundus, two species with frequent brood reduction, and found no sexual difference in embryonic period. This suggests that sex allocation is not affected by sex differences in embryonic period in these species, but more studies are required to verify whether this is a general pattern. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to allow nonhuman animals to control their environment using operant conditioning procedures and to assess the effect of control on cognitive tasks. The study tested 4 predictions: (a) rats (Rattus norvegicus) will control a light stimulus; (b) animals will exhibit preferences for particular stimulus strengths; (c) animals who exert control over environmental stimuli will show improved performance on cognitive tasks compared with animals who lack control; and (d) at the end of the operant phase, experimental subjects will have lower corticosterone levels than animals who lack control. Experimental subjects did show control over a light stimulus and performed significantly better over time in a discrimination task compared with subjects who could not control their environment. There was no difference in corticosterone levels between control and experimental subjects. The results will both contribute to our understanding of how control of environmental stimuli affects the welfare of animals in captive environments and aid in designing experimental conditions that will increase validity and reliability in research. 相似文献

We studied the departure from the physical optimality of the bronchial tree of rats using both i) the minimum volume and power and ii) the minimum surface and drag criteria, considering the bronchial junction as the unit study based on Zamir's model for vascular trees. Our results show deviations of the junctions of the bronchial tree from the expected optimums in the proximal airway that can be explained by both, the turbulent or transitional flow regime, and the airway's necessity to distribute its terminal branches in the alveolar surface filling the thoracic volume. The departures of the observed values at the optimum for the minimum volume and power were significantly different than the obtained departure values for the minimum surface and drag criteria. The departure from the optimum was directly related to the diameter of the smallest branch. The slopes of the regressions for the two criteria were different. The regression lines intercept at a bronchial diameter d2 = 0.129 mm. This result agreed with the idea that the tube diameter is limited at small values by the increasing flow resistance with decreasing tube diameter while at large values is limited by the increasing tube volume and dead space with increasing tube diameter. 相似文献

A trial of the sedative effects of a novel benzodiazepine, climazolam, and of a mixture of climazolam and fentanyl-fluanisone was undertaken in male and female Sprague Dawley and Lewis strain rats (Rattus norvegicus) of different ages. At the recommended intravenous therapeutic dosage of 0.25 mg/kg, climazolam sedated the rats but failed to inhibit the righting reflex or responses to painful stimuli. Even at 25 times the recommended dosage, there was no anaesthetic effect. Predictable and satisfactory surgical anaesthesia was not obtained with the mixture of climazolam and fentanyl-fluanisone administered intraperitoneally. In contrast with diazepam and midazolam, climazolam failed to potentiate the sedative analgesic properties of fentanyl-fluanisone: indeed many animals retained their tail and pedal pinch reflexes. The results also revealed significant differences in effect related to strain and age but not to sex. 相似文献
