Hybrid speciation is thought to be facilitated by escape of early generation hybrids into new habitats, subsequent environmental selection and adaptation. Here, we ask whether two homoploid hybrid plant species (Helianthus anomalus, H. deserticola) diverged sufficiently from their ancestral parent species (H. annuus, H. petiolaris) during hybrid speciation so that they are more fit than the parent species in hybrid species habitats. Hybrid and parental species were reciprocally transplanted into hybrid and parental habitats. Helianthus anomalus was more fit than parental species in the H. anomalus actively moving desert dune habitat. The abilities to tolerate burial and excavation and to obtain nutrients appear to be important for success in the H. anomalus habitat. In contrast, H. deserticola failed to outperform the parental species in the H. deserticola stabilized desert dune habitat, and several possible explanations are discussed. The home site advantage of H. anomalus is consistent with environmental selection having been a mechanism for adaptive divergence and hybrid speciation and supports the use of H. anomalus as a valuable system for further assessment of environmental selection and adaptive traits.  相似文献

A novel platinum–quinacridine hybrid, comprising a monofunctional Pt moiety and a G-quadruplex ligand (mono-para-quinacridine or MPQ), has been synthesized and shown to interact with quadruplex DNA via a dual noncovalent/covalent binding mode. Denaturing gel electrophoresis was used to separate the various platination products of 22AG (an oligonucleotide that mimics the human telomeric repeat) by Pt-MPQ, and it was shown that two platinated adducts are highly stable quadruplex structures. Dimethylsulfate/piperidine treatment and 3′-exonuclease digestion of the isolated adducts allowed us to precisely determine the platination pattern of 22AG by Pt-MPQ, which displays three main sites G2, G10 and G22. Data presented herein support the hypothesis that Pt-MPQ traps preferentially the antiparallel structure of the 22AG quadruplex. Finally, the kinetics of Pt-MPQ platination using a construct containing both quadruplex DNA and a duplex DNA parts provide the first insights into the Pt-MPQ preference for quadruplex DNA over duplex DNA.  相似文献

Purpose

The purpose of this review article is to investigate the usefulness of different types of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of electrified vehicles to provide robust and relevant stakeholder information. It presents synthesized conclusions based on 79 papers. Another objective is to search for explanations to divergence and “complexity” of results found by other overviewing papers in the research field, and to compile methodological learnings. The hypothesis was that such divergence could be explained by differences in goal and scope definitions of the reviewed LCA studies.

Methods

The review has set special attention to the goal and scope formulation of all included studies. First, completeness and clarity have been assessed in view of the ISO standard’s (ISO 2006a, b) recommendation for goal definition. Secondly, studies have been categorized based on technical and methodological scope, and searched for coherent conclusions.

Results and discussion

Comprehensive goal formulation according to the ISO standard (ISO 2006a, b) is absent in most reviewed studies. Few give any account of the time scope, indicating the temporal validity of results and conclusions. Furthermore, most studies focus on today’s electric vehicle technology, which is under strong development. Consequently, there is a lack of future time perspective, e.g., to advances in material processing, manufacturing of parts, and changes in electricity production. Nevertheless, robust assessment conclusions may still be identified. Most obvious is that electricity production is the main cause of environmental impact for externally chargeable vehicles. If, and only if, the charging electricity has very low emissions of fossil carbon, electric vehicles can reach their full potential in mitigating global warming. Consequently, it is surprising that almost no studies make this stipulation a main conclusion and try to convey it as a clear message to relevant stakeholders. Also, obtaining resources can be observed as a key area for future research. In mining, leakage of toxic substances from mine tailings has been highlighted. Efficient recycling, which is often assumed in LCA studies of electrified vehicles, may reduce demand for virgin resources and production energy. However, its realization remains a future challenge.

Conclusions

LCA studies with clearly stated purposes and time scope are key to stakeholder lessons and guidance. It is also necessary for quality assurance. LCA practitioners studying hybrid and electric vehicles are strongly recommended to provide comprehensive and clear goal and scope formulation in line with the ISO standard (ISO 2006a, b).  相似文献

Environmental impacts of hybrid and electric vehicles—a review   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  

Purpose

A literature review is undertaken to understand how well existing studies of the environmental impacts of hybrid and electric vehicles (EV) address the full life cycle of these technologies. Results of studies are synthesized to compare the global warming potential (GWP) of different EV and internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) options. Other impacts are compared; however, data availability limits the extent to which this could be accomplished.

Method

We define what should be included in a complete, state-of-the-art environmental assessment of hybrid and electric vehicles considering components and life cycle stages, emission categories, impact categories, and resource use and compare the content of 51 environmental assessments of hybrid and electric vehicles to our definition. Impact assessment results associated with full life cycle inventories (LCI) are compared for GWP as well as emissions of other pollutants. GWP results by life cycle stage and key parameters are extracted and used to perform a meta-analysis quantifying the impacts of vehicle options.

Results

Few studies provide a full LCI for EVs together with assessment of multiple impacts. Research has focused on well to wheel studies comparing fossil fuel and electricity use as the use phase has been seen to dominate the life cycle of vehicles. Only very recently have studies begun to better address production impacts. Apart from batteries, very few studies provide transparent LCIs of other key EV drivetrain components. Estimates of EV energy use in the literature span a wide range, 0.10?C0.24?kWh/km. Similarly, battery and vehicle lifetime plays an important role in results, yet lifetime assumptions range between 150,000?C300,000?km. CO2 and GWP are the most frequently reported results. Compiled results suggest the GWP of EVs powered by coal electricity falls between small and large conventional vehicles while EVs powered by natural gas or low-carbon energy sources perform better than the most efficient ICEVs. EV results in regions dependant on coal electricity demonstrated a trend toward increased SO x emissions compared to fuel use by ICEVs.

Conclusions

Moving forward research should focus on providing consensus around a transparent inventory for production of electric vehicles, appropriate electricity grid mix assumptions, the implications of EV adoption on the existing grid, and means of comparing vehicle on the basis of common driving and charging patterns. Although EVs appear to demonstrate decreases in GWP compared to conventional ICEVs, high efficiency ICEVs and grid-independent hybrid electric vehicles perform better than EVs using coal-fired electricity.  相似文献

The karyotypes of seven species of Australian Rattus were studied by G-banding. When taken in conjunction with molecular data, it is shown that rate of chromosome evolution in the R. sordidus group (R. sordidus, R. villosissimus and R. colletti) has been remarkably rapid and directed entirely towards changes of the Robertsonian type. From data on hybrid fertility it is concluded that the presence of fusions with monobrachial homology contributes more to reduced fertility than fusions per se or genetic differences.  相似文献

tRNAs are mostly transcribed from un-fragmented genes, but occasionally also from split genes, with separated 5' and 3' halves. A reanalysis of the existing data on Staphylothermus marinus and Staphylothermus hellenicus hints of a novel hybrid gene that encodes both an un-fragmented and a 5'-split-half together in one. The corresponding 3' complement-gene is located elsewhere on the genome. As un-fragmented, the hybrid gene transcribes to tRNA(lys)(TTT). But as 5'-half, it trans-splices with its 3'-complement-half to tRNA(lys)(CTT), the tRNA missed so far. This hybrid of the split and the un-fragmented in one suggests a deeper synergy between the two, and hints of co-evolution. Furthermore, in a subtle contrast to the widely held idea of conservation of 3'-half, it is precisely the 3'-half that varies in these two tRNAs; the 5'-half remains conserved.  相似文献

Compared to the vast theoretical literature on the dynamics of single species invasions, relatively few models have dealt with the emergence of invasive hybrids. Here, we review the variety of modeling approaches that have been used to study the dynamics of hybridization, outlining the underlying assumptions and highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. We summarize the predicted outcomes for the persistence for the native species and the resulting genetic composition of the native–exotic–hybrid complex under a variety of model scenarios. We highlight promising future directions for theoretical investigation and its integration with experimental studies.  相似文献

Studies examining the impacts of introduced species on food webs often focus on the top-down effects of introduced predators. However, marine and estuarine systems have been invaded by plants that have the potential to alter carbon and nitrogen sources available to consumers. In San Francisco Bay, California, USA, hybridized cordgrass Spartina alterniflora × foliosa is adding C4 carbon biomass to this system. We used natural abundances of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to examine whether infaunal and epifaunal food webs reflected the large detrital input from hybrid Spartina. We compared stable isotope signatures among macrofaunal invertebrate consumers collected in hybrid Spartina, native S. foliosa, or unvegetated mudflats. We found no additional shift towards hybrid Spartina in hybrid areas. Structural changes brought about by an invasive ecosystem engineer, specifically increased biomass and detrital inputs, do not necessarily result in its increased incorporation into the food web.  相似文献

Dendritic cell–tumor cell hybrid vaccination for metastatic cancer   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Dendritic cells are the most potent antigen-presenting cells, and the possibility of their use for cancer vaccination has renewed the interest in this therapeutic modality. Nevertheless, the ideal immunization protocol with these cells has not been described yet. In this paper we describe the preliminary results of a protocol using autologous tumor and allogeneic dendritic hybrid cell vaccination every 6 weeks, for metastatic melanoma and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients. Thirty-five patients were enrolled between March 2001 and March 2003. Though all patients included presented with large tumor burdens and progressive diseases, 71% of them experienced stability after vaccination, with durations up to 19 months. Among RCC patients 3/22 (14%) presented objective responses. The median time to progression was 4 months for melanoma and 5.7 months for RCC patients; no significant untoward effects were noted. Furthermore, immune function, as evaluated by cutaneous delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions to recall antigens and by peripheral blood proliferative responses to tumor-specific and nonspecific stimuli, presented a clear tendency to recover in vaccinated patients. These data indicate that dendritic cell–tumor cell hybrid vaccination affects the natural history of advanced cancer and provide support for its study in less advanced patients, who should, more likely, benefit even more from this approach.  相似文献

A plant collected in South Africa in the early 1960's has been considered an intergeneric hybrid with the parental taxa beingRuspolia hypocrateriformis (Vahl)Milne-Redhead var.australis Milne-Redhead andRuttya ovata Harv. The intermediate morphology of the plant provided the strongest evidence of its hybrid origin. The natural hybrid, named formally as ×Ruttyruspolia A. Meeuse & de Wet, is highly sterile. Crosses between the two presumed parental taxa produced two plants that are very similar to the putative natural hybrid. We had examined the presumed parental species and the natural and artificial hybrids using enzyme electrophoresis. The two parental species are highly differentiated at genes specifying soluble enzymes; they have a genetic identity of 0.51. They have no common alleles at two genes, and contain alternative alleles in very different frequencies at two loci.Ruttya andRuspolia exhibit both unique and common alleles at two additional genes. The natural and artificially produced plants of ×Ruttyruspolia are identical electrophoretically and contain alleles unique to each of the parental species at two genes. In addition, individuals of ×Ruttyruspolia combine alternative high frequency alleles from each parent at two loci. Allozymes provide strong confirming evidence for the hybrid origin of naturally occurring ×Ruttyruspolia because the products of specific alleles either unique to or highly characteristic of the two putative parental taxa are found combined in ×Ruttyruspolia.  相似文献

Summary First divisions of embryogenic cells were studied in leaves of plantlets of aCichorium hybrid (C. intybus L. ×C. endivia L.) cultured in vitro in a liquid agitated medium, at 35 °C in the dark. Stages of reactivation of competent cells were characterized by increase of nucleus and nucleolus diameter, migration of the nucleus in the centre of the cell and thickening of the cell wall. The first division of reactivated embryogenic cells was symmetrical and anticlinal in regard to the xylem vessels orientation. Embryogenic structures consisted in I-type tetrads or in rows of 4–8 cells. Background

Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) provide a staple food for many millions of people living in the humid tropics. The cultivated varieties (cultivars) are seedless parthenocarpic clones of which the origin remains unclear. Many are believed to be diploid and polyploid hybrids involving the A genome diploid M. acuminata and the B genome M. balbisiana, with the hybrid genomes consisting of a simple combination of the parental ones. Thus the genomic constitution of the diploids has been classified as AB, and that of the triploids as AAB or ABB. However, the morphology of many accessions is biased towards either the A or B phenotype and does not conform to predictions based on these genomic formulae.

Scope

On the basis of published cytotypes (mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes), we speculate here that the hybrid banana genomes are unbalanced with respect to the parental ones, and/or that inter-genome translocation chromosomes are relatively common. We hypothesize that the evolution under domestication of cultivated banana hybrids is more likely to have passed through an intermediate hybrid, which was then involved in a variety of backcrossing events. We present experimental data supporting our hypothesis and we propose a set of experimental approaches to test it, thereby indicating other possibilities for explaining some of the unbalanced genome expressions. Progress in this area would not only throw more light on the origin of one of the most important crops, but provide data of general relevance for the evolution under domestication of many other important clonal crops. At the same time, a complex origin of the cultivated banana hybrids would imply a reconsideration of current breeding strategies.  相似文献

The regional characterization of a previously obtained hamster–sheep hybrid panel is reported. Using data available from ruminant maps (sheep, cattle, and goat), we have selected a set of 300 markers and have analyzed them by PCR in this hybrid panel. Results obtained for 204 markers show the presence of all sheep chromosomes (including gonosomes) in entire or fragmented form. Analysis of syntenies has given 130 types of answer defining segments of variable sizes. This study has led to the regional characterization of this panel and provides comparative data on a set of bovine and caprine markers. With the level of characterization now achieved for this hybrid panel, the regional assignment of new genes or markers to sheep chromosomes can be rapidly obtained. Finally, this panel will help to collect new data for comparative mapping of domestic animals and to highlight the conservation of syntenic groups between closely related species, that is, sheep, cattle, and goat.
