The effects of dehydration and hemorrhage on plasma ionic, osmotic, and antidiuretic hormone (arginine vasotocin) concentrations and of hemorrhage on salt gland secretion and glomerular filtration rate were evaluated in glaucous-winged gulls, Larus glaucescens. Dehydration for 24 h did not affect plasma ionic, osmotic or arginine vasotocin concentrations; 72 h dehydration significantly elevated plasma osmolality, plasma sodium and chloride concentrations, and plasma arginine vasotocin concentration, but did not affect plasma potassium concentration. Constant infusion of 0.8 mol·l-1 NaCl increased plasma arginine vasotocin concentration and produced salt gland secretion in seven gulls; four secreted well, while three secreted less well. Removal of 20% blood volume during saline infusion immediately reduced (P<0.001) salt gland secretion rate in all gulls. After bleeding, good secretors maintained glomerular filtration rate and urine flow rate; the poorer secretors increased glomerular filtration rate and became diuretic. Blood replacement returned salt gland secretion rate to the prebleeding level (P<0.05) without affecting salt gland secretions sodium concentration in gulls which secreted well, but did not restimulate salt gland secretion in gulls which secreted poorly. Reinfusion of blood had no effect on glomerular filtration rate. Bleeding and blood replacement did not affect plasma arginine vasotocin concentration.Abbreviations AVT arginine vasotocin - ECF extracellular fluid - ECFV extracellular fluid volume - EDTA ethylenediaminetetra-acetate - EWL evaporative water loss - GFR glomerular filtration rate - Hct hematocrit - LB large blood sample - [Na+]pl plasma sodium concentration - Osmpl plasma osmolality - PEG polyethylene glycol - RH relative humidity - RIA radioimmunoassay - SB small blood sample - SGS salt gland secretion - T a ambient temperature - TFA trifluoroacetic acid - UFR urine flow rate  相似文献

Summary The intestinal caeca reabsorb urinary sodium chloride (NaCl) and water (Rice and Skadhauge 1982). Free water may be generated if the reabsorbed NaCl is secreted via salt gland secretion (Schmidt-Nielsen et al. 1958). Therefore ceacal ligation should (a) reduce hingut NaCl and water reabsorption, (b) enhance the increase in plasma osmolality during saline acclimation, and (c) affect drakes more than ducks. Twelve Pekin drakes and 13 Pekin ducks, Anas platyrhynchos, were caecally ligated or sham operated before acclimation to 450 mmol · 1 NaCl. Body mass, hematocrit, plasma osmolality, and inonic concentrations of plasma, cloacal fluid, and salt gland secretion were measured after each increase in drinking water salinity. Osmoregulatory organ masses were determined. Caecal ligation did not effect plasma osmolality or ion concentrations of plasma, cloacal fluid, or salt gland secretion, but reduced salt gland size in ducks. Drakes and ducks drinking fresh water had the same hematocrit, plasma osmolality, and plasma concentrations of Na+ and Cl. In both sexes exposure to 75 mmol · 1-1 NaCl significantly decreased plasma [Na+] and doubled cloacal fluid [Na+]. Exposure to 450 mmol · 1-1 NaCl decreased body mass and increased hematocrit, plasma [Na+], [Cl], and plasma osmolality (more in drakes than in ducks); cloacal fluid osmolality nearly doubled compared to freshwater-adapted ducks, due mainly to osmolytes other than Na+ and Cl. The [Cl] in salt gland secretion only slightly exceeded drinking water [Cl].Abbreviations AVT antiduretic hormone - CF cloacal fluid - ECFV extraoellular fluid volume - FW freshwater acclimated - Hct hematocrit - MDWE mean daily water flux - [Na +]cf cloacal fluid sodium concentration - [Na +]pl plasma sodium concentration - Osm cf cloacal fluid osmolality - Osm pl plasma osmolality - SGS salt gland secretion - TBW total body water  相似文献

The effect of manipulating sodium intake upon sweat sodium secretion was investigated during heat acclimation. Twenty-five male subjects were confined to an environmental chamber at a temperature of 25°C for 3 days, and then acclimated to heat by a further 5 days at 40°C. The subjects' daily sodium intake was controlled throughout as follows: high (HNa), 348.4 (0.8) mmol · day−1, n = 7; moderate (MNa), 174.1 (0.6) mmol · day−1, n = 9; or low (LNa), 66.3 mmol · day−1, n = 9. Sodium losses were estimated from urinary, faecal and sweat collections using a whole-body washdown method. Plasma aldosterone concentration was also measured from venous blood sampled each morning. Measurements of body temperature and heart rate during the heat exposure phase indicated a degree of heat acclimation. During this heat phase there was a reduction (P < 0.01) in sweat sodium secretion for all three conditions which was greatest for the LNa condition, although this finding was not significant (P < 0.1). In the LNa condition, plasma aldosterone concentration increased (P < 0.05) prior to heat exposure, and the secretion of aldosterone was potentiated (P < 0.01) during the heat exposure in comparison with the MNa condition. In contrast, the HNa diet produced a fall (P < 0.05) in plasma aldosterone concentration prior to heat exposure and an attenuation of aldosterone secretion thereafter. These findings are inconsistent with the hypothesis that retention of sweat sodium is dependent upon a net body sodium deficit, but demonstrate that aldosterone secretion is potentiated under such conditions. The energy budget, water balance and osmoregulation of the fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus, were studied during normal hydration and during water restriction (oven-dried apple diet). The water input and output were balanced during both normal hydration and water restriction. The kidney of the fruit bat is well adapted to handle the water load from its fruit diet by excreting large volumes (14% of the body mass per day) of dilute urine (113±25 mosmol·kg H2P-1) as well as reducing urine volume (-95%) and increasing urine osmotic concentration (555±280 mosmol·kg H2O-1) during water restriction. The haematocrit, plasma haemoglobin and total protein concentrations did not increase during water restriction and heat exposure, suggesting the conservation of plasma volume. Gross energy intake was not alfected by water restriction. However, digested energy intake and digestibility were significantly reduced. The effective regulation of energy and water budgets during water restriction suggests that the fruit bat can cope with seasonal climatic changes and with variable fruit supply during various seasons.Abbreviations BM body mass - DEI digested energy intake - EWL evaporative water loss - GEL gross energy intake - NH normal hydration - T a ambient temperature - WR water restriction  相似文献

Summary Renal clearance experiments were conducted on feral chickens descended from birds collected from a coral island off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Following a control period when 0.13 M NaCl was used as a vehicle for the renal function markers, a salt load was imposed by infusion of 1 M NaCl. The hypertonic NaCl infusion resulted in increases in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), effective renal blood flow (ERBF), and urine flow rate (V), whereas filtration fraction decreased. Haematocrit was reduced and plasma osmolality, sodium, chloride and potassium concentrations increased. Plasma arginine vasotocin (PAVT) levels increased from 31.4±2.3 pg·ml-1 during the control infusion to 56.0±1.7 pg·ml-1 following a salt load of 12 mmol Nacl·kg-1 The sensitivity of release of AVT was 0.69±0.11 pg·ml-1 per mosmol·kg-1. The concentrations of Na and Cl in urine increased, whereas urine osmolality and potassium concentration decreased. The expansion of the extracellular fluid volume induced by the salt loading would tend to suppress the release of AVT, whereas the osmotic stimulus would provide a stimulus for the release of AVT. In this study, GFR, ERBF and ERPF increased at the same time as PAVT increased.Abbreviations AVP arginine vasopressin - AVT arginine vasotocin - ERBF effective renal blood flow - ERPF effective renal plasma flow - GFR glomerular filtration rate - Pavt plasma arginine vasotocin concentration - PAH paraaminohippuric acid - SEM standard error of mean - SNGER single nephron glomerular filtration rate - U/P urine to plasma ratio - V urine flow rate  相似文献

Body temperature of five European hamsters exposed to semi-natural environmental conditions at 47° N in Southern Germany was recorded over a 1.5-year period using intraperitoneal temperature-sensitive radio transmitters. The animals showed pronounced seasonal changes in body weight and reproductive status. Euthermic body temperature changed significantly throughout the year reaching its maximum of 37.9±0.2°C in April and its minimum of 36.1±0.4°C in December. Between November and March the hamsters showed regular bouts of hibernation and a few bouts of shallow torpor. During hibernation body temperature correlated with ambient temperature. Monthly means of body temperature during hibernation were highest in November (7.9±0.8°C) and March (8.2±0.5°C) and lowest in January (4.4±0.7°C). Using periodogram analysis methods, a clear diurnal rhythm of euthermic body temperature could be detected between March and August, whereas no such rhythm could be found during fall and winter. During hibernation bouts, no circadian rhythmicity was evident for body temperature apart from body temperature following ambient temperature with a time lag of 3–5 h. On average, hibernation bouts lasted 104.2±23.8 h with body temperature falling to 6.0±1.7°C. When entering hibernation the animals cooled at a rate of -0.8±0.2°C·h-1; when arousing from hibernation they warmed at a rate of 9.9±2.4°C·h-1. Warming rates were significantly lower in November and December than in January and February, and correlated with ambient temperature (r=-0.46, P<0.01) and hibernating body temperature (r=-0.47, P<0.01). Entry into hibrnation occured mostly in the middle of the night (mean time of day 0148 hours ±3.4 h), while spontaneous arousals were widely scattered across day and night. For all animals regression analysis revealed free-running circadian rhythms for the timing of arousal. These results suggest that entry into hibernation is either induced by environmental effects or by a circadian clock with a period of 24 h, whereas arousal from hibernation is controlled by an endogenous rhythm with a period different from 24 h.Abbreviations bw body weight - CET central European time - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - TTL transistor-transistor logic  相似文献

Summary The effects of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors on secretion by macropodine parotid and mandibular glands were investigated using anaesthetized red kangaroos. In the parotid gland, acetazolamide (500 mol·l-1) reduced a stable acetylcholine-evoked, half-maximal flow rate of 2.02±0.034 to 0.27±0.023 ml·min-1 (87% reduction). Concurrently, salivary bicarbonate concentration and secretion fell (129.4±1.46 to 80.9±1.63 mmol·l-1 and 264.8±7.96 to 22.3±2.30 mol·min-1, respectively), phosphate and chloride concentrations rose (14.0±0.79 to 27.6±0.85 mmol·l-1 and 5.6±0.25 to 27.5±1.32 mmol·l-1, respectively), sodium concentration and osmolality were unaltered, and potassium concentration fell (8.8±0.33 to 6.4±0.29 mmol·l-1). High-rate cholinergic stimulation during acetazolamide blockade was unable to increase salivary flow beyond 11±0.9% of that for equivalent unblocked control stimulation. However, superimposition of isoprenaline infusion on the acetylcholine stimulation caused a three-fold increase in the blocked flow rate. These treatments were accompanied by small increases in salivary phosphate and chloride concentrations but not bicarbonate concentration. Methazolamide infusion caused similar changes in parotid secretion. In the mandibular gland, acetazolamide infusion had no effect on salivary flow rate during either low- or high-level acetylcholine stimulation. Acetazolamide caused no alterrations in salivary electrolyte secretion at low flow rates, but curtailed the rise in bicarbonate concentration associated with high-level acetylcholine stimulation. Acetazolamide administration did not affect the increase in salivary flow rate associated with isoprenaline infusion, but did block the concomitant increase in bicarbonate concentration and secretion substantially. It was concluded that neither cholinergic nor adrenergic stimulation of mandibular fluid secretion depends on secretion of bicarbonate derived from catalysed hydration of CO2, but a substantial proportion of the increase in bicarbonate secretion during isoprenaline administration, which is probably ductal in origin, is so dependent. In contrast to other salivary glands, including the ovine parotid, fluid secretion by the kangaroo parotid gland during cholinergic stimulation is largely dependent (about 90%) on secretion of bicarbonate derived from hydration of CO2 catalysed by glandular carbonic anhydrase. Fluid secretion during adrenergic stimulation is not bicarbonate dependent.Abbreviations b.w. body weight - PAH p-aminohippurate - PCO2 partial pressure carbon dioxide - PCO2 partial pressure of oxygen  相似文献

Summary Net sodium flux (J net), sodium influx (J in), and sodium efflux (J out) were measured in two sunfish,Enneacanthus obesus (acid-tolerant) andLepomis gibbosus (less acid-tolerant), during 24 h exposure to soft water of pH's 4.0 and 3.5.E. obesus exhibited a mild transitory disturbance at both pH's caused by inhibitedJ in and slightly stimulatedJ out. Body and plasma ion concentrations ofE. obesus were measured weekly during exposures for 5 weeks to acidified artificial soft water (ASW). Body sodium concentration declined 30% during 2 weeks exposure to pH 3.5 but no further during the next three weeks. Exposure to pH 4.0 had no effect on body sodium concentration during the entire 5 weeks. Plasma sodium concentration declined 15% over a 3 week period at pH 3.5; there was no further change in the next two weeks. Plasma potassium concentrations, which were measured after 4 and 5 weeks at pH's 5.8 and 3.5 in ASW, were not significantly different. In a separate two week long experiment, plasma sodium concentration ofE. obesus in ASW was correlated with pH between pH's 3.5 and 7.5. This effect was mainly due to increases above pretreatment levels at pH 4.5 and above. Increased ambient sodium and calcium concentrations had no effect on body sodium concentration ofE. obesus at pH 5.8, but mitigated the effects of exposure to pH 3.5. Increased calcium concentrations up to 25 M at pH 3.5 increased body sodium concentration, but higher concentrations had no additional effect. Body potassium concentration and body water concentration ofE. obesus were linearly related to body sodium concentration under a wide variety of external conditions. This suggests the presence of a mechanism by whichE. obesus regulates plasma sodium levels and body fluid compartments in response to sodium loss. In contrast toE. obesus, L. gibbosus showed larger sodium losses at low pH resulting from greater acceleration ofJ out; those exposed at pH 3.5 died in less than 12 h.L. gibbosus also had reduced body and plasma sodium concentrations at pH 4.5 and below; those at pH 4.0 were the lowest. Body potassium concentration ofL. gibbosus was reduced in those fish exposed to pH 4.0 and below, but body water was increased. Thus there are striking differences in the ability to regulate ion and water balance at low pH between an acid-tolerant specialist (E. obesus) and a less acid-tolerant generalist (L. gibbosus).Abbreviations ASW artificial soft water - WBM wet body mass - DBM dry body mass  相似文献

One year old, individually tagged Lake Inari Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, were reared at three constant temperatures, 10.3°C, 14.1°C and 18.1°C, over four weeks. Blood samples were collected from a group of unstressed fish after the cultivation period at the same time as another group of fish were subjected to acute handling stress treatment (2min netting in air and 40min (± 20min) recovery period in water). Plasma cortisol, calcium, sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations were measured on both groups. To study the effect of minor daily temperature fluctuations on the stress response of Arctic charr, two additional daily fluctuating temperature (14 ± 1°C, 18 ± 1°C) treatments were established. The samples were taken in the same manner as those in the constant temperature treatments. Growth was fastest at 10.3–14.1°C and clearly lower at 18.1°C. Pre-stress plasma cortisol levels were low but increased slightly with increasing temperature. After stressor treatment, the cortisol concentrations of Arctic charr were clearly higher in all temperature treatments but there were no significant differences in plasma cortisol concentrations among temperatures. Plasma calcium levels increased during the stress treatment but temperature did not modulate this effect. The plasma potassium concentrations declined at 14.1–18.1°C after acute stress but the response was not affected by temperature within this range. The concentrations of sodium and chloride were unaffected by acute stress. Temperatures of 10.3–18.1°C and fluctuating temperature treatments had no influence on any plasma ion concentrations. Arctic charr were able to maintain the plasma ion concentrations in fresh water at 10.3–18.1°C and after acute stress treatment. Results indicate that the optimum temperature for growth of Arctic charr has little to do with the plasma ion concentrations or the ability to maintain those concentrations after short-term stress. The plasma cortisol responses further indicate that the optimum temperature for growth of Arctic charr is not related to the suppressed ability to react to an acute handling stressor. Temperature fluctuations did not cause significant differences in cortisol levels when compared with constant temperatures.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of aging and aerobic fitness on exercise- and methylcholine-induced sweating responses during heat acclimation. Five younger [Y group – age: 23±1 (SEM) years; maximal oxygen consumption (V.O2max): 47±3 ml·kg–1·min–1], four highly fit older (HO group – 63±3 years; 48±4 ml·kg–1·min–1) and five normally fit older men (NO group – 67±3 years; 30±1 ml·kg–1·min–1) who were matched for height, body mass and percentage fat, were heat acclimated by daily cycle exercise (≈35% V.O2max for 90 min) in a hot (43°C, 30% RH) environment for 8 days. The heat acclimation regimen increased performance time, lowered final rectal temperature (T re) and percentage maximal heart rate (%HRmax), improved thermal comfort and decreased sweat sodium concentration similarly in all groups. Although total body sweating rates (M.sw) during acclimation were significantly greater in the Y and HO groups than in the NO group (P<0.01) (because of the lower absolute workload in the NO group), the M.sw did not change in all groups with the acclimation sessions. Neither were local sweating rates (m. sw) on chest, back, forearm and thigh changed in all groups by the acclimation. The HO group presented greater forearm m. sw (30–90 min) values and the Y group had greater back and thigh m. sw (early in exercise) values, compared to the other groups (P<0.001). In a methylcholine injection test on days immediately before and after the acclimation, the order of sweat output per gland (SGO) on chest, back and thigh was Y>HO>NO, and on the forearm Y=HO>NO. No group differences were observed for activated sweat gland density at any site. The SGO at the respective sites increased in the post-acclimation test regardless of group (P<0.01), but on the thigh the magnitude of the increase was lower in the NO (P<0.02) and HO (P=0.07) groups than in the Y group. These findings suggest that heat tolerance and the improvement with acclimation are little impaired not only in highly fit older but also normally fit older men, when the subjects exercised at the same relative exercise intensity. Furthermore, the changes induced by acclimation appear associated with an age-related decrease in V.O2max. However methylcholine-activated SGO and the magnitude of improvement of SGO with acclimation are related not only to V.O2max but also to aging, suggesting that sensitivity to cholinergic stimulation decreases with aging. Physiological variables of torpor are strongly temperature dependent in placental hibernators. This study investigated how changes in air temperature affect the duration of torpor bouts, metabolic rate, body temperature and weight loss of the marsupial hibernator Burramys parvus (50 g) in comparison to a control group held at a constant air temperature of 2°C. The duration of torpor bouts was longest (14.0±1.0 days) and metabolic rate was lowest (0.033±0.001 ml O2·g-1·h-1) at2°C. At higher air temperatures torpor bouts were significantly shorter and the metabolic rate was higher. When air temperature was reduced to 0°C, torpor bouts also shortened to 6.4±2.9 days, metabolic rate increased to about eight-fold the values at 2°C, and body temperature was maintained at the regulated minimum of 2.1±0.2°C. Because air temperature had such a strong effect on hibernation, and in particular energy expenditure, a change in climate would most likely increase winter mortality of this endangered species.Abbreviationst STP standard temperature and pressure - T a air temperature - T b body temperature - VO2 rate of oxygen consumption  相似文献

Effect of a phenylalanine (Phe)-free diet on body weight, nitrogen balance and plasma free Phe levels were studied with male White Leghorn aged 2 weeks, 6, 12 and 15 months. Effects of feeding an isoleucine (Ile)- or amino acid-free diet and fasting on plasma amino acid levels in 15-month-old roosters were also studied.

Two-week-old chicks lost appetite for the Phe-free diet and their body weights decreased gradually. Six-month-old cockerels consumed the Phe-free diet completely but could not maintain normal growth rate and positive nitrogen balances. Twelve- and 15-month-old roosters maintained their body weights and nitrogen equilibrium on the Phe-free diet.

Plasma Phe levels of 2-week- and 6-month-old fowls at the 6th hr after the last feeding of the Phe-free diet did not decrease significantly compared to those of the control groups. However, plasma Phe levels of 12- and 15-month-old roosters decreased rapidly within a day on the Phe-free diet. Fasting resulted in a significant increase in plasma amino acid concentrations whereas feeding an Ile- or amino acid-free diet resulted in concentrations of plasma amino acids which were not lower than those observed in the control roosters.  相似文献

Kidney function of the euryhaline toad Bufo viridis was studied in animals acclimated to tap water and solutions of NaCl (230 and 500 mosmol · kg-1 H2O) and urea (500 mmol · l-1) in steady-state conditions. An ureter was eatheterized for continuous urine collection and blood was sampled from an iliac artery. A single injection of 3H-inulin served for estimation of glomerular filtration rate: this was in the range of 15–27 ml · kg-1 · h-1 and did not differ significantly in any of the acclimation conditions. Urine flow, on the other hand, varied considerably and was highest in tap water (18.2±3.2 ml · kg-1 · h-1; urine/plasma inulin ratio=0.88), lower in 230 mosmol · kg-1 H2O NaCl solution (13.5±3.9 ml · kg-1 · h-1; u/p inulin ratio=1.73) and lowest in 500 mosmol · kg-1 H2O NaCl or urea acclimation solutions (5–7 ml · kg-1 · h-1; u/p inulin=3.7–4.2). Clearance of free water was high in the tap water group, lower in 230 mosmol · kg-1 H2O NaCl solution, and much lower in the hyperosmotic acclimation conditions. Clearances of both Na+ and Cl- were similar under our experimental conditions, but changed independently in accordance to the composition of the acclimation solution. Potassium clearance was similar in all acclimation conditions, and a constant plasma K+ concentration was maintained. Urea clearance was high in tap water and 500 mmol · l-1 urea acclimation groups and low in the NaCl acclimations. The experiments show that the glomerular filtration rate remains more or less unchanged in all acclimation conditions, and suggest that the different rates of urine flow at steady state must be due mostly to tubular processes. The final composition of the urine is the result of specific and highly selective tubular processes.Abbreviations %T fractional reabsorbance - AVT argine vasotocin - C free water free water clearance - C osmol osmolyte clearance - GFR glomerular filtration rate - MS-222 methanetricaine sulphonate - U/P urine to plasma inulin ratio - V volume  相似文献

Poecilobdella viridis was used to study the variations in the biochemical parameters: body protein, glycogen and water, following warm (32.0° ± 0.5°C) and cold (10.0° ± 0.5°C) acclimation for 5, 10, 15 and 30 days. The percentage of glycogen decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during both warm and cold acclimation whereas the protein percentage increased significantly (p < 0.05). The percentage of water was significantly (p < 0.05). reduced during both acclimation processes. Ecophysiological significance of these alterations to leeches, in counteracting the ambient thermal fluxes, has been briefly discussed.  相似文献

The impact of season and temperature on frog liver γ-glutamyltranspeptidase was assessed by measuring the activity of this enzyme in plasma membranes isolated from the livers of Rana pipiens obtained as summer and winter frogs; subjected to short-term (3 weeks) temperature acclimation; and subjected to multiple-temperature shifts. Plasma levels of T3 were determined. γ-Glutamyltranspeptidase was found to be 2·2-fold higher in the summer frog relative to the winter frog; decreased by 44 percent in the summer frog by cold acclimation and increased by 1·7-fold in the winter frog by warm acclimation; and increased by 1·9-fold in the summer frog and 2·8-fold in the winter frog subjected to multiple-temperature shifts. Plasma T3 levels were found to be 42-fold higher in the summer frog relative to the winter frog; decreased by 42 percent by cold acclimation and increased by 2·9-fold by warm acclimation; and decreased by 39 percent and 38 percent in the summer and winter frogs subjected to multiple temperature shifts. T3 replacement during the last phase of the multiple-temperature shift protocol, restored the plasma T3 levels to 75 percent of the control levels and prevented the increase evoked by the multiple-temperature shifts in γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase activity. Indeed, enzyme activity in the T3 replaced state was 19 percent lower than in the control state. The involvement of thyroid hormone as a negative regulator of enzyme activity is discussed.  相似文献

The relation between plasma prolactin and plasma calcium was investogated in normoprolactinemic and hyperprolactinemic adult male rats. Hyperprolactinemia was induced by implantation of a pituitary underneath the kidney capsule in intact males. Hyperprolactinemia did not affect the concentration of calcium in the plasma. It did neither affect food and water consumption, nor urine production and urinary sodium excretion, indicating that prolactin is not important for osmoregulation. However, in hyperprolactinemic rats urinary calcium excretion was markedly increased. 90 Min of intravenous infusion of CaCl2 induced a similar rise of plasma calcium in normoprolactinemic and hyperprolactinemic rats. Infusiion of EGTA during 60 min induced no change in total plasma calcium in normo- and hyperprolactinemic rats. although probably ionized plasma calcium was considerably decreased. Plasma prolactin, however, was not changed during these infusions. It is concluded that in the adult male rat prolactin has no function in the short term regulation of calcium homeostasis. However, when plasma prolactin is considerably increased duing prolonged periods, the hormone may affect calcium metabolism.  相似文献

The salinity tolerance, and hydromineral regulation capabilities of three size groups (small 110–170 g; medium 230–290 g, large 460–700 g; n=48 for each group) of 13-month-old juvenile Gulf of Mexico sturgeon were investigated. Fish (n=6 for each salinity) were transferred directly from freshwater (FW) to a series of experimental salinity treatments (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 parts per thousand (ppt)). Fish were also acclimated in brackish water (20 ppt) for 2 weeks and transferred to a salinity of 34 ppt. In this condition juvenile Gulf of Mexico sturgeon adapted to saltwater (SW) and maintained their hydromineral balance. FW adapted sturgeon (n=6) had an average blood hemotocrit of 28.2±0.8%, plasma osmolality of 260.7±1.6 mOsm kg−1 H2O, and plasma ion concentrations of 135.7±1.2 mM l−1 Na+, 106.9±1.9 mEq l−1 Cl, and 2.9±0.1 mM l−1 K+. In SW adapted sturgeon (n=8) blood parameters averaged 26.9±0.7% for hematocrit, 294.2±2.3 mOsm kg−1 H2O for osmolality, 152.0±1.7 mM l−1 Na+, 149.2±1.4 mEq l−1 for Cl, and 3.1±0.1 mM l−1 K+. The method of transfer (abrupt or slow acclimation) directly affected fish survival and the time they took to achieve ionic and osmotic regulation. This SW adaptation appears to be related to body size, the larger the fish the easier the adaptation process. A threshold size of about 170 g was apparent for the fish to adapt to saltwater after 2 weeks of acclimation. Chloride cells were present in both FW and SW adapted sturgeon with SW and brackish water fish having chloride cells significantly (P<0.05) more numerous (561±53 and 598±45 cells mm−2) and larger in size (41.0±3.85 and 34.2±4.49 μm2) than FW adapted sturgeon (10±1.0 cells mm−2 and 22±2.53 μm2). Few chloride cells were observed in the opercular membrane, however, none were found in the pseudobranch and spiracle.  相似文献

Summary The shifts of current-voltage characteristics of sodium and calcium inward currents produced by changes in the concentration of divalent cations (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+) and in pH of the extracellular solution have been measured on isolated neurons of the molluscHelix pomatia intracellularly perfused with potassium-free solutions. On the basis of these shifts and using Stern's theory (O. Stern, 1924.Z. Electrochem. 30508–516), the binding constants for the ions to charged groups of the outer side of the somatic membrane and the density of the surface charges produced by these groups have been calculated. For groups located in the vicinity of sodium channels we obtainedK Ca=90±10,K Sr=60±10,K Ba=25±5 andK Mg=16±5m –1 at pH=7.7 and for groups located in the vicinity of calcium channelsK Ca=67±10,K Sr=20±5 andK Ba=19±5m –1 at pH=7.0. The same groups bind H+ ions with apparent pK=6.2±0.2 that corresponds toK H=1.6×106 m –1. The density of fixed charges near the sodium channels is 0.17±0.05 e/nm2 (pH=7.7) and near the calcium channels is 0.23±0.05 electrons/nm2 (pH=7.0). From the comparison of the obtained values with the data about binding constants of the same ions to different negatively charged phospholipids, a suggestion is made that just the phophatidylserine is responsible for the surface potential of the outer side of the somatic membrane. It was also shown that the presence of this potential results in a change in the concentration of carrier ions near the membrane which affects the maximal values of the corresponding transmembrane currents.  相似文献

“Cold-stunning” of sea turtles has been reported as a naturally occurring stressor for many years; however, the physiologic status of cold-stunned turtles has only been partially described. This study investigated initial and convalescent venous blood gas, acid-base, and critical plasma biochemical data for 26 naturally cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys kempii) from Cape Cod, MA, USA. Samples were analyzed for pH, pCO2, pO2, bicarbonate, plasma osmolality, sodium, potassium, chloride, ionized calcium, ionized magnesium, glucose, lactate, and blood urea nitrogen using a clinical point-of-care analyzer. Data were corrected for the patient’s body temperature using both species-specific and more general correction methods. In general, venous blood gas, acid-base, and plasma biochemical data obtained for surviving cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles were consistent with previously documented data for sea turtles exposed to a wide range of temperatures and physiologic stressors. Data indicated that turtles were initially affected by metabolic and respiratory acidosis. Initial pH-corrected ionized calcium concentrations were lower than convalescent concentrations, and initial pH-corrected ionized magnesium concentrations were higher than convalescent concentrations.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation was to examine the response of 80 plasma inflammatory analytes during five days of exercise in a hot (38 °C, 40% relative humidity) environment. 15 male participants (25±4yrs, 54±6 ml kg−1 min−1 VO2 max), with no heat exposure within the previous 3 weeks, were asked to cycle in a hot environment at 70% of their VO2 max workload until their terminal temperature was obtained, for 5 consecutive days. Terminal temperature was determined as the core temperature at volitional exhaustion or a core temperature of 39.5 °C, whichever came first. Blood samples were collected pre- and post-exercise on day 1 and day 5. Pre-trial urine specific gravity and body weight was not different on day 1 and day 5. Exercise time and heart rate at terminal temperature did not change during the five days. Of the 52 plasma analytes that increased in concentration on day 1, only 30 demonstrated increased concentrations at terminal temperature on day 5. Resting concentrations of 18, both pro- (IL-12p40, IL-15) and anti-inflammatory (IL-1ra, IL-10, IL-13) analytes were elevated on day 5 compared to day 1. We conclude that individuals completing consecutive days of exercise in the heat, but not definitively attaining heat acclimation, have increased resting levels of many inflammatory analytes associated with heat illness, but also demonstrate a reduced inflammatory response to a subsequent bout of exercise in the heat.  相似文献
