Authors succeeded in rearing eri-silkworms from hatching to the mouth stage on an artificial food. The artificial food devised were composed of powdered leaves of castor-oil plant, “Kinako” (a powder of parched soy bean), sucrose, agar-agar, inhibitor solution and water. The results on larval raising, cocoon fibres and eggs of the eri-silkworms reared on artificial food were the same as those in the case of the eri-silkworms reared on fresh leaves of castor-oil plant, natural food for this insect, or rather better. The raising of eri-silkworms on artificial food may be adopted industrially for production of a wild silk.  相似文献

The sites of abscisic acid (ABA) synthesis and metabolism in Ricinus communis L. were investigated by analyzing the levels of ABA and its two metabolites phaseic acid (PA) and dihydrophaseic acid (DPA) in the shoot tips, mature leaves, and phloem sap of stressed and nonstressed plants.  相似文献

A semi-synthetic diet utilising parthenium leaf powder was evaluated for rearing the Mexican beetle Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister under in vitro conditions at 26±1°C, 65% RH. Significant differences were observed in the biological parameters of the beetle viz., the grub survival (54.3%), pupation (47.2%), fecundity (54.6/day) and total developmental period (37.7 days), when reared on the semi-synthetic diet compared to those when reared on natural parthenium leaves (91.5, 85.5, 74.8 and 29.8, respectively). The feasibility of utilising the semi-synthetic diet for mass production of the beetle is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of increasing level of nickel (Ni) in soil was studied on biomass production, antioxidants, and Ni bioaccumulation and its translocation in castor bean (Ricinus communis) as well as Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) in similar agroclimatic conditions. The plants were exposed to 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150 mg Ni kg?1 soil for up to 60 days. It was found that R. communis produced higher biomass during the same period at all the contamination levels than B. juncea, and reduction in fresh and dry weights due to the metal contamination in soil was significantly lower in R. communis than in B. juncea. Proline and malondialdehyde in the leaves increased with increase in Ni level in both the species, whereas soluble protein content was found decreased. A correlation between the protein and MDA contents in the leaves and Ni contamination levels revealed that higher r2 values for protein and MDA were found in case of B. juncea, which indicates more toxic effects of the metal in this species. R. communis was found to have enhanced proline accumulation (higher correlation value, r2) at different Ni contamination levels. The bioaccumulation of Ni was higher in B. juncea on the basis of the per unit biomass; however, the total metal accumulation per plant was much higher in R. communis than in B. juncea during the same growing periods. The translocation of Ni from roots to shoots was higher in B. juncea at all Ni concentrations. R. communis appeared more tolerant and capable to clean more Ni from the contaminated soil in a given time and also in one crop cycle.  相似文献

Summary When young plants of Hordeum vulgare. Bryonia dioica. Cucumis sativus. Phaseolus vulgaris. Mimosa pudica. and Ricinus communis. were given a gentle mechanical stimulus by rubbing the internodes for about 10 s once or twice daily, elongation was significantly retarded. Plants of Cucurbita pepo Pisum sativum and Triticum aestivum did not exhibit any such response. The initial response to rubbing was very rapid, elongation stopping less than 3 min after application of the stimulus. When the stimulus was discontinued after 7 days, elongation accelerated, reaching a normal or supernormal rate within 3 or 4 days. Mechanical stimulation also affected aspects of growth and development other than stem elongation. In Mimosa pudica, flower bud production was retarded, as was the growth of the tendrils, leaves, and petioles in Bryonia dioica. It is suggested that this response be called thigmomorphogenesis, and that it represents an adaptation designed to protect plants from the stresses produced by high winds and moving animals. Some evidence indicates that thigmomorphogenesis may be mediated by ethylene.  相似文献

Oak-silkworms (Anthereae pernyi) were reared from hatching to the adult stage on a diet consisting of powder of dry leaves of oak trees (Quercus dentata T.), ‘kinako’ (powder of parched soy bean), sucrose, agar-agar, sodium dehydroacetate as an antiseptic, and water. Among 100 newly hatched oak-silkworms reared on the diet, 23 spun their cocoons. The weight of the cocoon fibres spun by one worm and the number of the eggs laid down by one moth were 0.34 g and 203, respectively, on the average.  相似文献

Sucrose is taken up and accumulated by cotyledons of Ricinus communis L. Autoradiographic studies reveal a predominant accumulation of sucrose in the phloem of the cotyledons. The export of sucrose from the cotyledons to hypocotyl and roots proceeds in the phloem by mass flow. These results, taken together with previous data, are experimental evidence for proton-sucrose symport as the mechanism of phloem loading.  相似文献

Redesign of the castorbean plant body plan for optimal combine harvesting   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The seed oil of castorbean (Ricinus communis, Euphorbiaceae) is highly appreciated in several sectors of the chemical industry. A tropical perennial, with sympodial branching, this plant presents, at the same time, both vegetative shoots and inflorescences, as well as racemes with ripe seeds. This architecture is an obstacle to harvesting the plants using the standard combine harvester which requires, as with any other seed crop, that the plants be dry. One agronomic solution is to spray the plants with desiccants. However, in this paper a genetic solution is suggested, that is, an annual plant. This model is discussed within the present knowledge of plant monocarpic senescence. A mutation that changes the quantity and/or the quality of cambial activity could reduce the secondary growth in castorbean, thus favouring the plants death. Moreover, to stop iterative growth which is at the base of the perennial form of castorbean, a non‐branching model is also proposed. The occurrence of this phenotype in some crops (maize and sunflower) and mutants (tomato, barley, etc.) is examined. Considering apical dominance as the primary mechanism at the base of a non‐branching form, a mutation capable of inducing permanent dormancy of axillary buds is discussed. Both mutation breeding and genetic engineering are suggested as major tools to obtain an annual plant of castorbean.  相似文献

The onset of biotic stress in the host plants as a result of increased insect population size leads to enhanced levels of secondary metabolites and associated phenolic enzyme activity. Of the three host plants examined, viz.Ricinus communis (castor),Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus) andManihot utilissima (tapioca), castor was the host most preferred byRetithrips syriacus. Despite the fact that tapioca had the highest levels of secondary compounds, thrips infestation persisted. However, fecundity and growth were reduced because of the relatively high levels of primary metabolites. Gallic acid was found to be the most toxic of the phenolic acids, followed by pyrogallol, resorcinol, phloroglucinol and vanillic acid. The less toxic phenolic acids and flavanoids were detected in leaves that harboured thrips, while the preponderance of gallic acid was found in uninfested hosts. Thus the interaction ofRetithrips syriacus with the hosts is governed essentially by the biochemical profiles of its hosts, which tend to be altered subsequent to infestation, thus manifesting induced resistance through enhanced production of phenolics  相似文献

Incorporation of dried leaves of Azadirachta indica, Cannabis sativa, Eucalyptus tereticornis and Ricinus communis at 3 kg per 100 kg of dry wheat straw prior to composting had several effects. When compared with controls, treated composts exhibited a higher temperature during composting, a higher nitrogen content and a neutral pH. The treatments resulted in enhanced populations of thermophilic fungi and mesophilic antibiotic-producing fungi, but reduced numbers of mesophilic competitor/pathogenic moulds. Populations of the mycophagous nematode, Aphelenchoides composticola were reduced below economic injury level in dried leaf treated composts. Compost obtained from C. sativa and R. communis treatments were more rapidly colonised by the mushroom mycelium (Agaricus bisporus) than that from any other treatment. When compared with compost treated with carbofuran R. communis, C. sativa and A. indica treatments significantly increased mushroom yield by 19.4, 8.1 and 6.5% and by 108.5, 88.7 and 85.9% when compared with the control. Yield from the E. tereticornis treatment was also higher than the control but lower than that of the nematicide treatment.  相似文献

Ricinus communis L. is a bioenergetic crop with high-biomass production and tolerance to cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), thus, the plant is a candidate crop for phytoremediation. Pot experiments were performed to study the effects of citric acid in enhancing phytoextraction of Cd/Pb by Ricinus communis L. Citric acid increased Cd and Pb contents in plant shoots in all treatments by about 78% and 18–45%, respectively, at the dosage of 10 mM kg?1 soil without affecting aboveground biomass production. Addition of citric acid reduced CEC, weakened soil adsorption of heavy metals and activated Cd and Pb in soil solutions. The acid-exchangeable fraction (BCR-1) of Pb remained lower than 7% and significantly increased with citric acid amendment. Respective increases in soil evaluation index induces by 14% and 19% under the Cd1Pb50 and Cd1Pb250 treatments upon addition of citric acid resulted in soil quality improvement. Ricinus communis L. has great potential in citric acid-assisted phytoextraction for Cd and Pb remediation.  相似文献

Ricinus communis L. was grown under limiting N supply in quartz sand culture, fed with 0.2, 1 or 5 mol m?3 NO3?, or in liquid culture with 0.022, 0.05 or 0.5 mol m?3 NO3?. Some of the plants were infected with Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. As occurred for the host, dry matter production and growth of C. reflexa were severely depressed with decreasing N supply to the host. When parasitized by C. reflexa, the shoot and root dry weight of Ricinus was diminished at all levels of N nutrition, but the total dry weight of host plus parasite was almost the same as that of uninfected Ricinus. In contrast to the situation in Lupinus albus (Jeschke et al. 1994b), infection by Cuscuta resulted in increased tissue N levels in the host and the N content of the system Ricinus plus C. reflexa was the same or even somewhat larger than that of uninfected plants. This indicated a sink-dependent stimulation of nitrate uptake. As a result of decreased root weights, nitrate uptake g?1 FW was stimulated by 80, 60 or only 40% at 0.2, 1 or 5 mol m?3 nitrate supply. Increased nitrate uptake was reflected, particularly at low N supply, in xylem transport; xylem sap nitrate concentrations were substantially elevated, while those of amino acids were decreased in parasitized plants. This indicated an inhibition of nitrate assimilation in roots of parasitized plants under limiting N supply. Besides these effects on N relations, C. reflexa induced a substantial sink-dependent stimulation of net photosynthesis in host leaves and a concomitant increase in stomatal opening and transpiration. This stimulation depended on the relative sink size induced by Cuscuta, on nitrogen nutrition and on leaf age, indicating that delayed senescence of leaves contributes to the overall effects of Cuscuta on its host. The Cuscuta-induced inhibition of nitrate assimilation in the roots and the increase in nitrate uptake suggest that nitrate reduction was shifted towards the leaves in the presence of C. reflexa. The stimulating effects of C. reflexa in the Ricinus-Cuscuta association are compared with the strongly inhibitory effects occurring in the tripartite association L. albus–Rhizobium–Cuscuta reflexa.  相似文献

A heterologous in-vitro system is described for the import of the precursor to glyoxysomal malate dehydrogenase from watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris Schrad., cv. Kleckey's Sweet No. 6) cotyledons into glyoxysomes from castor-bean (Ricinus communis L.) endosperm. The 41-kDa precursor is posttranslationally sequestered and correctly processed to the mature 33-kDa subunit by a crude glyoxysomal fraction or by glyoxysomes purified on a sucrose gradient. The import and the cleavage of the extrasequence is not inhibited by metal chelators such as 1,10-phenanthroline and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Uncouplers (carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone), ionophores (valinomycin), or inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation (oligomycin) and ATP-ADP translocation (carboxyatractyloside) do not interfere, thus indicating the independence of the process of import by the organelle from the energization of the glyoxysomal membrane.Abbreviations CCCP carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone - EDTA ethylenediaminetetraacctic acid - gMDH glyoxysomal malate dehydrogenase - PMSF phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride  相似文献

Amblydromalus zannoui Sourassou, Sarmento and Moraes is a phytoseiid mite of the limonicus group described from central Brazil from leaves of physic nut, Jatropha curcas L. (Malpighiales: Euphorbiaceae), a plant potentially useful as a source of biofuel. This plant is often attacked by the mites Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) (Prostigmata: Tarsonemidae) and Tetranychus bastosi Tuttle, Baker and Sales (Prostigmata: Tetranychidae). The objectives of this work were to evaluate the predation rate of A. zannoui on those phytophagous mites, to assess its life cycle on these prey and on pollen of Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae), and to determine its attraction to physic nut leaves infested by P. latus or T. bastosi. Amblydromalus zannoui attacked more nymphs and adults than eggs of P. latus, and more eggs and larvae than adults of T. bastosi. The life table parameters suggest that A. zannoui performs better on P. latus (rm: 0.20, Ro: 18.77; λ: 1.23) and pollen (rm: 0.18, Ro: 23.32, λ: 1.18). The predator seems to be attracted to plants with P. latus, but attraction was not clear cut for plants with T. bastosi. The results suggested that A. zannoui is a potential control agent to be used against P. latus on physic nut plants, and that R. communis pollen can be used as supplementary food to maintain the predator population in the absence of prey.

Reports about diurnal changes of assimilates in phloem sap are controversial. We determined the diurnal changes of sucrose and amino acid concentrations and fluxes in exudates from cut aphid stylets on tansy leaves (Tanacetum vulgare), and sucrose, amino acid and K(+) concentrations and fluxes in bleeding sap of castor bean pedicel (Ricinus communis). Approximately half of the tansy sieve tubes exhibited a diurnal cycle of sucrose concentrations and fluxes in phloem sap. Data from many tansy plants indicated an increased sucrose flux in the phloem during daytime in case of low N-nutrition, not at high N-nutrition. The sucrose concentration in phloem sap of young Ricinus plants changed marginally between day and night, whereas the sucrose flux increased 1.5-fold during daytime (but not in old Ricinus plants). The amino acid concentrations and fluxes in tansy sieve tubes exhibited a similar diurnal cycle as the sucrose concentrations and fluxes, including their dependence on N-nutrition. The amino acid fluxes, but not the concentrations, in phloem sap of Ricinus were higher at daytime. The sucrose/amino acid ratio showed no diurnal cycle neither in tansy nor in Ricinus. The K(+)-concentrations in phloem sap of Ricinus, but not the K(+) fluxes, decreased slightly during daytime and the sucrose/K(+)-ratio increased. In conclusion, a diurnal cycle was observed in sucrose, amino acid and K(+) fluxes, but not necessarily in concentrations of these assimilates. Because of the large variations between different sieve tubes and different plants, the nutrient delivery to sink tissues is not homeostatic over time.  相似文献

There are two H+-pumping enzymes at the tonoplast membrane of plant vacuoles, the V-ATPase and the V-PPase. One attempt to explain the enigma of “two H+ pumps, one membrane” was the suggestion that the V-PPase has special functions in young developing and growing tissues in utilization of pyrophosphate produced in particularly active metabolism and in pumping of K+ for vacuolization. This should lead to reciprocal expression of both enzymes with time during development. Here we used stimulation of Kalanchoë blossfeldiana Poellnitz cv. Tom Thumb plants by short-day treatments to induce crassulacean acid metabolism and flowering and of Ricinus communis L. stem tissue by infection with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58 to induce vigorous growth of tumours, and we compared these stimulated tissues with leaves of non-stimulated long-day controls and non-infected stem tissue, respectively. Activities and protein levels of both enzymes increased (K. blossfeldiana) or remained high (R. communis) in the stimulated tissues and decreased in the non-stimulated tissues with time. Time-dependent patterns of the two enzymes were concordant in all of the four cases and not inverse, i.e. two plants with two different conditions each, leading to very different developmental situations.  相似文献

Jasmonates are signaling molecules that play key roles in wound response and regulate the biosynthesis of many defensive proteins, including proteases. In this study, we investigate the effects of wounding and methyl jasmonate (MJ) application on the protein expression pattern of Ricinus communis L. leaves and on proteolytic activity. Gelatin zymography demonstrated that both MJ and mechanical wounding induce alterations in the proteolytic pattern of castor bean leaves (R. communis L.). Expression of two cysteine proteases (38 and 29 kDa) was induced by the treatments employed; however, MJ induced a higher protease level than mechanical wounding during the stress period (24, 48, and 72 h). The increase in protease activity mirrors the decline in soluble protein content and rubisco degradation that may indicate initiation of senescence in castor plants. The 29 kDa protease has an acidic optimal pH; whereas the 38 kDa protease has a neutral optimum activity. Both proteases were almost completely inhibited by E-64 and cystatin. The significant induction of these proteins by MJ suggests a possible role of cysteine proteases in leaf senescence as well as their involvement in regulating both the wound response and MJ in castor bean plants.  相似文献

Endosperm tissue was excised from Ricinus communis plants at different stages during seed maturation. The various stages were characterized on the basis of total RNA, protein and lipid content. Polyadenylated RNA was recovered from the total RNA by affinity chromatography on oligo(dT)cellulose. With the exception of that isolated from dry seeds, this poly(A+) RNA actively programmed protein synthesis in cell-free systems containing either wheat germ S30 extracts or nuclease treated rabbit reticulocyte lysates at each developmental stage examined. Translational products were separated electrophoretically and were visualized by fluorography. The capacity to synthesize protein was also estimated during in vivo labelling studies. Developmental changes in the capacity of maturing endosperm tissue to synthesize a characteristic protein, R. communis agglutinin, were followed by immunoprecipitating this protein from the total in vitro products synthesized at various stages. Endoplasmic reticulum membranes were isolated from maturing endosperm tissue by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The role of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in protein glycosylation was indicated by (a) localizing the enzymes catalysing the incorporation of N-acetylglucosamine and mannose into mono- and oligosaccharide lipid and into glycoprotein, (b) localizing particulate 3H-labelled glycoprotein amongst cellular fractions prepared from endosperm tissue which had been incubated with [3H]N-acetylglucosamine.Abbreviations polyCA+)RNA polyadenylated RNA - SDS sodiumdodecylsulphate - TCA trichloroacetic acid - RCA120 Ricinus communis agglutinin, type I - NP40 Nonidet P40 - PMSF phenylmethylsulphonyl fluoride  相似文献

This study examines the effects of ricinoleic acid esters from Ricinus communis castor oil on the vitellogenesis of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks attached to hosts that were fed with commercial rabbit food containing these esters. The oocytes of ticks from the treatment group (TG) showed cytoplasmic changes that inhibited the development of oocytes I and II to the advanced stages (IV and V) in addition to preventing the maturation of oocytes V, resulting in small ones. In addition, sperm was not observed in ampoules. Our findings confirm the acaricide potential of ricinoleic acid esters.  相似文献
