Elemental composition of two coexisting Daphnia species during the seasonal course of population development in Lake Constance 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Summary In 1986 and 1987 the seasonal course of population density, life history traits and biomass composition (CHN-elemental and ash) of two coexisting Daphnia species from L. Constance (Überlinger See) were studied. The two daphnids are morphologically similar, but demonstrate different seasonal variation of behaviour (i.e. diurnal vertical migration). With the exception of nitrogen content, the mean biomass composition of adults and that of eggs were significantly different: the dry biomass of eggs (adults) contained on average 55.6 (46.1) % C, 7.9 (6.5) % H, 9.7 (9.7) % N, and 10.0 (23.8) % ash. These values were similar to those of other daphnids; it may be concluded that the average daphnid composition is not species specific, but is determined mainly by the position in the life cycle and by the nutritional state of the animal. A distinct seasonal variation in the elemental composition of the biomass of adult daphnids was observed. It related significantly to the concentration of food, as indicated by the epilimnetic chlorophyll-a concentrations and by Secchi depth. From the amplitude of seasonal variation of elemental composition and from the shape of relationships between the elemental composition of daphnids and their food, it can be concluded that in summer the non-migrating D. galeata lives under stronger food limitation than the migrating H. hyalina. In spring, there were no differences in the biomass composition of either species. In summer, the adult fcmales of D. galeata contained significantly less carbon, and hydrogen than those of D. hyalina. In most parameters of biomass (i.e. biomass composition of adults) and of life history (i.e. clutch size, mean adult weight), D. galeata displayed higher coefficients of variation. A tendency in D. galeata to have peaks of population development carlier in the season and in D. hyalina to have them towards autumn was observed. A study has been made on the distribution of crustaceans along a profile of 6–9 stations from depths of less than 2 m to 20
m, in summer, autumn and early spring. The species composition, abundance, size-frequency distribution, biomass and diurnal
dynamics were estimated. Many species abundant in the pelagic zone were found to be absent or scarce out to depths of 5 m.
In the daytime, at depths out to 3 m, crustaceans greater than 1.0 mm were seldom found, while those 0.15–0.40 mm long were
most abundant. At depths out to 5 m, not only was the total average size of crustaceans found to be smaller, but also that
of individual species, including small ones: Ceriodaphnia and Chydorus. The biomass of crustaceans in shallow water and in the open lake differs in summer by more than 100 times, and in late autumn
and early spring by more than 10 times. At the depth of 1 m, in none of the seasons did it exceed 0.026 mg l-1. All the crustaceans except for nauplii and Chydorus considerably increased in numbers in the shallow water at night.
The impoverishment of the littoral plankton in Lake Glubokoe is regarded as a specific case of the well-known phenomenon of
‘avoidance of the littoral’ by euplankton (Hutchinson, 1967; Kiselyov, 1980). It is pointed out that there is a possible relationship
between diurnal horizontal migrations of plantivorous fish and the impoverishment of plankton near the shore. An attempt has
been made to substantiate the assumption that the ‘avoidance of the littoral’ by pelagic crustaceans is due to high numbers

The population dynamics of Daphnia hyalina Leydig in a productive lake, Esthwaite Water, and an unproductive lake, Buttermere, in the English Lake District have been compared. The winter is passed as resting eggs in the bottom sediments in Buttermere and as free-swimming individuals in the planktonic zone in Esthwaite Water. In Esthwaite Water seasonal periodicity was characterised by maxima in spring and autumn and a minimum in summer; in Buttermere, there was no spring maximum and the first increase in population density was in summer. Population densities were higher and adult females were larger and laid more eggs per clutch in Esthwaite Water than in Buttermere. In each lake males became numerous in autumn. Observed rates of population increase, r and calculated birth rates, b and death rates d were nearly always higher in Esthwaite Water than in Buttermere. 相似文献

The zoocenosis of Lake Glubokoe has been characterized on the basis of long-term and paleobiocenotic studies. The present
zoocenosis has existed for about 400 years. It was preceded by a tanatozoocenosis with a domination by Testacida. At present,
the phytoplankton is dominated by Euchlorophyceae, Cyanophyta, Pyrrophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Chrysophyta, and the zooplankton
by Daphnia spp. and Bosmina spp. In the zoobenthos, the community of Sergentia has now been replaced by that of Chironomus. The most numerous among the fish are Rutilus rutilus and Perca fluviatilis. The flora and fauna exist under conditions of a low total content of dissolved substances. There is a considerable number
of acidophilic Desmidiales and Alonella nana. Periodic shifts of water pH towards acidity apparently affect the floral and faunal composition of the lake. The list of
440 animals and 232 plants is composed mainly of recent data; many groups of animals and plants have not yet been studied.

Density and size structure changes of natural daphniids populations were studied in enclosures with a different level of fish predation. Daphnia pulicaria was totaly removed in high predation variants, and the differences of the mean body length both in adults and juveniles are apparent between low predation enclosure and enclosure without fish. Daphnia galeata was replaced by D. magna and D. pulicaria in the enclosure without fish. The decline of densities and the substantial (30–50%) and fast (during 12 days) shift of mean body length both in adults and juveniles of D. galeata was induced by the fish (carp fry) introduction to the high predation enclosures. 相似文献

就笔者等在南海之东沙岛及太平岛两处海域所调查记录到的珊瑚礁鱼类,连同自1975年以来之文献与数据库的记录作综合整理.结果表明,东沙岛有73科652种,太平岛有56科466种,两岛合计共有76科759种.太平岛所记录的总鱼种数较东沙岛为少,主要原因纯系因太平岛之礁域面积较小,且调查次数甚少之故.根据各鱼种地理分布范围之分析,发现在此二岛所记录到的鱼种几乎全部都是印度-太平洋、印度-西太平洋及西太平洋等广泛分布的鱼种,目前只有黄头刻齿雀鲷(Chrysiptera chrysocephala)1种是只在南海发现之鱼种.由此可推测南海的鱼类相应与周边海域或珊瑚三角的鱼类相充分交流,并未有明显隔离或种化的现象.东沙岛及太平岛鱼类相之Sφrensen相似性系数值虽已达85.69%,但其中仍有240种是只分布在东沙岛及台湾(165种),或太平岛及台湾(75种),而未在另一岛屿发现之鱼种,且其中只在太平岛及东沙岛发现的21种及20种鱼中,大多为稀有种,非常不容易被调查到.故推测目前在此二岛所作的调查频度相当不足,如果调查能更密集更长期,则两岛的鱼相会更相似. 相似文献

Daphnia can alter its vertical position in the water column in response to chemical cues from predators. In this study we tested the hypothesis that a Daphnia pulex clone with little evolutionary exposure to cyanobacteria would move away from patches of cyanobacteria (Anabaena affinis and A. flos-aquae) which contain potent endotoxins. Daphnia was censused at 2 h intervals for 6 h in laboratory columns in which there was a steep vertical gradient of cyanobacteria. Data were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA. Control (no Anabaena) and experimental columns showed no significant differences in Daphnia distributions. Daphnia in experimental columns frequently moved into areas with dense concentrations of Anabaena and stayed there for long periods of time. Our results show that this D. pulex clone does not exhibit a rapid (within 6 h) avoidance response to toxic Anabaena. 相似文献

Studies on the planktonic Crustacea in Lake Glubokoe (Moscow region) from 1897 to 1982 have been reviewed. After 1965, when
most of the swamp water inflow was diverted from the lake, certain populations have penetrated into deeper layers, while the
average overlap in the community has dropped. The summer dominant Mesocyclops leuckarti disappeared and Chydorus sphaericus appeared in mass quantities; this development was not associated with biomass changes of blue-greens. The Cladocera/Calanoida
ratio and the relative abundance of certain species showed no considerable changes. The effect of Chaoborus, Cyclops and Leptodora in the 70's on the crustacean populations was insignificant in spite of the increasing abundance of these genera after 1965.
Analysis of the dynamics of the clutch size and the density of lake populations in the 1970's and 1980's revealed food limitation
and competition in herbivorous Cladocera. In laboratory experiments with lake water they always competed, though the intensity

The population structure of Daphnia longispina in Lake El Tobar, Spain was studied by measuring variation at the aldehyde oxidase (AO), phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) and phosphoglucose mutase (PGM) loci in each of 1337 individuals from four collections. In 9 of the 12 comparisons between observed allele frequencies and those expected by Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium there was an excess of heterozygotes. We found 27 of the potential number of 54 composite electromorphs (clones) based on the three allozymes. Clone diversities were rather high in all collections. Three clones reached frequencies of over 25% and different clones were dominant in each of the four collections. Strong temporal variation was found in the genetic structure of this Daphnia population. This variation was driven by changes in the relative frequencies of the component clones in the lake rather than by a recruitment of novel clones into the population.We conclude with a consideration of the role of models relating allele and genotype frequencies in populations of cyclical parthenogens. Because the breeding system of these populations infrequently involves recombination between clones, models such as the Hardy-Weinberg have limited value in providing meaningful measures of population structure. 相似文献

The temporal variation of the surface deposit feeders in a mudflat of Chuwei Mangrove Forest showed a significant input of populations from the recruitments in the spring. The chemical analysis of the sediment in the top 8 cm showed that the sedimentary organic content had a subsurface maximum value in the deeper layer in most cases. Most of the temporal variations in the organic carbon and nitrogen contents occurred in the top few centimeters. The high C:N ratio and low organic nitrogen content in the sediment suggests the supply of carbon (or energy) to the benthos was low. The increase of labile protein content in the deep layer might be due to the downcore transport of sediment nutrients by the bioturbation. Laboratory growth experiment suggests that some the chemical characters examined in this study may represent the sediment nutrients to the animals. 相似文献

The effects of chemicals released by fish and Chaoborus larvae on some life history traits in Daphnia pulex were studied in an in situ enclosure experiment. The mean size of Daphnia individuals was smaller in the presence of fish-released cues. Also the minimal size of an egg bearing female in the presence of fish exudates was smaller than in the population exposed to the chemicals released by Chaoborus larvae as well as in the control population. Fish-released chemicals caused the increase in clutch size in Daphnia. There were no statistically significant differences between the studied life history parameters of the control and Chaoborus treatments. 近年在编写《广西植物志》过程中,对广西馆藏百合科植物标本进行了整理鉴定,并作了野外调查。在整理后发现,广西百合科植物不仅资源丰富,连栽培计有30属129种6变种(野生为26属115种、变种),而且还具有广西自身的地方特色,计有广西特有种28种,另有广西分布新记录16种,国家珍稀保护植物1种。它们中的绝大多数种类,已被用作医药和观赏。本文除报道这些新记录种和特有种外,还着重报道了其中5个种类较多、分类难度较大的属及其所含的种。此外,还报道了广西百合科植物的分属检索表及其在水平、垂直、不同土壤母质和特有分布方面的地理分布简况。 相似文献

A very particular form of Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia), adapted to life in epicontinental hyperhaline waters of Mediterranean arid regions had long been confused with Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) dolichocephala Sars, 1895. In this paper the morphological and ecological differences between the two taxa are pointed out and comparison is made with another closely related Rumanian form (Daphnia cf. mediterranea) and with the related Spanish species (D. atkinsoni and D. chevreuxi). The Daphnia of saline environments is described here as Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) mediterranea. The most important differential characters of this new species are: 1) the short and widely rounded rostrum; 2) dorsal ridge of the female extends to the anteriormost part of the head; 3) elliptical ephippium with a ride anterior margin; convex shape and separate from the dorsal ridge; 4) males possessing a very long antennule base that reaches the distal limit of the head. 相似文献

Two new Mesocyclops species, M. mariae n. sp. and M. shenzhenensisn. sp., are described from southern China, the former species from Guangxi province, the latter from Guangdong province. Both species have setules on the medial margin of the caudal rami. Compared with each other, there are some conspicuous differences, such as the spinule pattern of the antenna basipodite, the structure of receptaculum seminis, the armature of coxopodite and basipodite of P4 and the armature of the caudal rami. The paper also compares the two new species with their supposedly closest relatives, M. pseudospinosus Dussart & Fernando, 1988, M. leuckarti(Claus, 1857) and M. pehpeiensisHu, 1943. In addition, other species of Mesocyclops in China are discussed and a key to 10 Chinese species of Mesocyclops is provided. 相似文献
