Seasonal variability of dissolved organic carbon ina Mediterranean stream   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The seasonal variability of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) flux in a Mediterranean stream subjected todischarges of wide range of intensities and variabledry period was studied as a function of the hydrologicconditions, and the relationship between surface andsubsurface (hyporheic and groundwater) DOCconcentration. DOC concentration in stream water(2.6 mg l–1 ±1.5 SD) was higher thangroundwater (1.3 mg l–1 ± 1.2 SD) and lower thanhyporheic water (3.8 mg l–1 ±1.7 SD),suggesting that, at baseflow, stream DOC concentrationincreases when groundwater discharges through thehyporheic zone. Storms contributed to 39% of annualwater export and to 52% of the total annual DOCexport (220 kg km–2). A positive relationship wasobserved between Discharge (Q) and stream DOCconcentration. Discharge explained only 40% of theannual variance in stream DOC, but explained up to93% of the variance within floods. The rate of streamDOC changes with discharge change during storms (dDOC/dQ), ranged between 0 and 0.0045 C mgl–1 s l–1, with minimum values during Springand Summer, and maxima values in Fall and Winter. These dynamics suggest that storm inputs ofterrigenous DOC vary between seasons. During floods inthe dormant season, DOC recession curves were alwayssteeper than discharge decline, suggesting shortflushing of DOC from the leaching of fresh detritusstored in the riparian zone.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics were examined over five years (1989–1993) in Sycamore Creek, a Sonoran Desert stream, specifically focusing on DOC concentration in surface and hyporheic waters, and rates of export. In 1989 and 1990, the years of lowest stream discharge (0.08 and 0.04 m3 s–1 annual mean of daily discharge, respectively), DOC was high, averaging 7.37 and 6.22 mgC l–1 (weighted annual means). In contrast, from 1991 through 1993, a period of increased flow (1.1, 1.2 and 4.3 m3 s–1), concentration was significantly lower (P<0.001) with annual mean concentrations of 3.54, 3.49 and 3.39 mgC l–1. Concentration exhibited little spatial variation between two sampling stations located 6 km apart along the mainstem or between surface and hyporheic waters. Annual export of DOC from Sycamore Creek varied 100-fold over the five-year period from a mean rate of only 24 kgC d–1 in 1990 to 2100 kgC d–1 in 1993. Ninety percent of DOC was exported by flows greater than 2.8 m3 s–1, and 50% during flows greater than 27 m3 s–1; flows of 2.8 and 24 m3 s–1 occurred only 9 and 1% of the time. The export of organic matter in Sycamore Creek appears to be coupled to El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomena. The years of highest export, 1991–1993, had El Niño conditions while 1989 and 1990 had medial conditions.  相似文献

The chemical composition of drift in the lake-river system of the Krutynia River was investigated in May and August of 1987–1989. The main chemical component of drift was organic carbon, four fractions of which were distinguished: dissolved (DOC), fine particulate (FPOC), coarse (COPC) and large particulate organic carbon (LPOC). The most important of these was DOC, representing 88–100% of the TOC transported. Among the POC, the finest fraction (FPOC) prevailed, constituting as much as 98.3% of dry weight of the particulate matter. There were no significant differences between the average content of CPOC and LPOC, although significant seasonal changes were observed. Concentrations of both dissolved and particulate forms of carbon decreased with distance downriver, but that of POC diminished faster, possibly because of the effect of the lake.  相似文献

We studied the transport of particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in two regulated rivers during minimum and increasing discharges. Mean annual concentrations of total POC, measured monthly during conditions of minimum discharge from the dams, were twice as high at a station below a dam with a selective withdrawal system on the Kootenai River (KR, 0.15 mg 1–1), as at station below a dam with hypolimnetic water releases on the Flathead River (FR, 0.07 mg 1–1). Annual mean concentrations of DOC were similar below both dams (1.62 mg 1–1 FR; 1.71 KR). The percentage of POC in four size fractions differed in regulated and unregulated reaches of each river system; the smallest size fraction (0.45–10 smm) constituted a larger percentage of the total POC at the stations below the dams (50–93%), because POC in large size classes had settled out in the reservoir. The three largest size fractions (10–1000 µm) comprised a larger percentage of the total POC when samples were taken during conditions of full discharge from the dam. We measured large increases in all size classes of POC in samples collected during increasing discharges in a regulated reach, reflecting the component of sloughed periphyton and resuspended organic matter that were added during periods of hydropower generation at the dam. Seston (355 µm to 1 cm) collected in nets increased dramatically during increasing flows; concentrations of particulate organic matter (POM) in samples collected two and three hours after water levels began to rise were 572 and 1440 times higher than those collected during minimum discharge at the dam.  相似文献

Freeze-dried aqueous extracts of autumn-shed maple leaves, birch leaves, and spruce needles were added to a third-order reach of Bear Brook, New Hampshire at concentrations similar to those predicted to occur during peak leaf fall. Leachate from each species was rapidly removed from solution. With initial concentrations of added leachate of approximately 5 mgl–1, dissolved organics (DOC) uptake ranged from 73 to 130 mg m–2 h–1 for the first five hours of travel downstream from the point of addition. There was no preferential removal of DOC of low molecular weight, or of monomeric carbohydrates relative to phenolics or unidentified DOC.Stream sediments and organic debris rapidly removed DOC from solution in laboratory experiments. No significant flocculation or microbial assimilation of sugar maple leachate occurred in stream water alone. Stream sediments showed small increases in respiration with addition of leaf leachate, but no increase in respiration occurred upon addition of leachate to organic debris. Abiotic adsorption due to the high concentrations of exchangeable iron and aluminium in stream sediments may be responsible for much of the rapid removal of leaf leachate observed in field experiments. Abiotic processes appear to retain DOC within the stream, thereby allowing subsequent metabolism of dissolved organic carbon by stream microflora.  相似文献

Variations in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations of surface waters and subsurface interstitial groundwater of riparian and wetland soils to 1.2 m depth were evaluated in a riverine wetland ecosystem over one year. DOC was monitored at seven sites within the wetland pond, two sites on the inflow stream, and one site on the outflow stream. Surface concentrations in the inflow stream ranged from 0.74 to 11.6 mg C L–1 and those of the outflow from 2.1 to 8.0 mg C L–1 Average DOC from stream floodplain hydrosoils (3.1 to 32.1 mg C L–1 was greater than DOC from the sediments below the stream channel (1.6 to 6.8 mg C L–1 Surface DOC within the wetland varied seasonally, with greatest fluctuations in concentrations through the summer and autumn (range 4.8 to 32.6 mg C L–1 ) during intensive macrophyte growth and bacterial production. DOC was less variable during the winter months (1.7 to 3.3 mg C L–1 Within the wetland pond, average DOC concentrations (7.1 to 48.2 mg C L–1) in the subsurface waters were significantly greater (p < 0.05) than average surface concentrations. The microbial availability of surface and subsurface DOC to bacteria was evaluated from losses of DOC by wetland bacteria grown on the DOC. Bacterial growth efficiencies ranged from 5 to 20% and were negatively correlated to the percentage of DOC removed by bacteria (r2=0.93). Throughout the ecosystem, DOC concentrations were greatest in the subsurface waters, but at most depths this DOC was a less suitable substrate than surface DOC for utilization by bacteria.  相似文献

Sources and sinks of dissolved organic carbon in a forested swamp catchment   总被引:14,自引:6,他引:8
Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured in precipitation, throughfall, stemflow, and soil, peat and stream water in a 50 ha catchment with a central 5 ha swamp at Mont St. Hilaire, Quebec. DOC concentrations in precipitation were low (2.0 mg L–1), but increased in passage through the tree canopies as throughfall (9.1–14.6 mg L–1) and stemflow (23.1–30.1 mg L–1). For the period July 1–November 15, 1987, 0.5 g DOC m–2 was imported as precipitation, and forest canopies contributed a further 1.4–1.7 g m–2 2 to the soil surface. DOC concentrations were higher (46.0 and 67.6 mg L–1) in upland soil organic horizons, but decreased with depth because subsoil mineral horizons acted as a major sink of DOC. A laboratory experiment using leaf leachate revealed that subsoil horizons were able to adsorb DOC, with equilibrium DOC concentrations ranging from 3 to 19 mg L–1. Soil organic carbon appeared to be an important determinant of equilibrium DOC concentrations. The swamp was a major source of DOC, with an overall average DOC concentration of 58.6 mg L–1 and showed strong spatial and temporal variations related to hydrologic and thermal regimes. During base flow periods, stream DOC concentrations were small (< 3 mg L–1), dominated by water fed from springs draining upland soils. During high flows, stream DOC concentrations increased through the contribution of DOC-rich water originating in the swamp. Sources, sinks and transport of DOC are thus a function of a complex set of inter-related biotic and abiotic process.  相似文献

Patterns of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) delivery were compared between times of stormflow and baseflow in Paine Run, an Appalachian stream draining a 12.4 km2 forested catchment in the Shenandoah National Park (SNP), Virginia. The potential in-stream ecological impact of altered concentrations and/or chemical composition of DOM during storms also was examined, using standardized bacterial bioassays. DOC and DON concentrations in Paine Run were consistently low during baseflow and did not show a seasonal pattern. During storms however, mean DOC and DON concentrations approximately doubled, with maximum concentrations occurring on the rising limb of storm hydrographs. The rapid response of DOM concentration to changes in flow suggests a near-stream or in-stream source of DOM during storms. Stormflow (4% of the time, 36% of the annual discharge) contributed >50% of DOC, DON and NO3 flux in Paine Run during 1997. In laboratory bacterial bioassays, growth rate constants were higher on Paine Run stormflow water than on baseflow water, but the fraction of total DOM which was bioavailable was not significantly different. The fraction of the total stream DOC pool taken up by water column bacteria was estimated to increase from 0.03 ± 0.02% h–1 during baseflow, to 0.15 ± 0.04% h–1 during storms. This uptake rate would have a minimal effect on bulk DOM concentrations in Paine Run, but storms may still have considerable impact on the bacterial stream communities by mobilizing them into the water column and by supplying a pulse of DOM.  相似文献

The sources of both dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) to an alpine (Sky Pond) and a subalpine lake (The Loch) in Rocky Mountain National Park were explored for four years. The importance of both autochthonous and allochthonous sources of organic matter differ, not only between alpine and subalpine locations, but also seasonally. Overall, autochthonous sources dominate the organic carbon of the alpine lake, while allochthonous sources are a more significant source of organic carbon to the subalpine lake. In the alpine lake, Sky Pond, POC makes up greater than one third of the total organic matter content of the water column, and is related to phytoplankton abundance. Dissolved organic carbon is a product of within-lake activity in Sky Pond except during spring snowmelt and early summer (May–July), when stable carbon isotope ratios suggest a terrestrial source. In the subalpine lake, The Loch, DOC is a much more important constituent of water column organic material than POC, comprising greater than 90% of the spring snowmelt organic matter, and greater than 75% of the organic matter over the rest of the year. Stable carbon isotope ratios and a very strong relation of DOC with soluble Al(tot) indicate DOC concentrations are almost entirely related to flushing of soil water from the surrounding watershed during spring snowmelt. Stable carbon isotope ratios indicate that, for both lakes, phytoplankton is an important source of DOC in the winter, while terrestrial material of plant or microbial origin contributes DOC during snowmelt and summer.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluctuations were studied in the surface water of Dal Lake from May 1984 to April 1985, at monthly intervals. Concentration of DOC varied from 0.140 mg l–1 to 0.725 mg l–1. A minimum was recorded in May and September, while an increase was observed during December and January. The fluctuations during the observation period showed a relationship with temperature and pH.  相似文献

Concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC & POC) in river waters were measuredduring 1993–1994 in the Lanyang Hsi watershed, which representsa typical small Oceania river. The DOC concentrations varied in the range of 0.5–4 mg/l during non-typhoon period, but rose to as highas 8 mg/l during Typhoon Tim in July, 1994. Based on the log-linearrelationship between the DOC load and the discharge rate, weestimated the DOC export to be 3.4 ± 0.6 ktC/yr,and the DOC yield to be 4.1 ± 0.7 gC/m2/yr,which is considerably higher than a former estimate (ca.0.1 gC/m2/yr) for the Oceania. On the other hand, the DOC yield is less than the concurrent POC yield (21.7 ± 4.7gC/m2/yr) by a factor of five, but most of theexported POC is fossil carbon. Under the assumption that the suspended sediments contain a mean fossil POC content of0.5%, the nonfossil POC yield was calculated to be 4.6± 3.0 gC/m2/yr, comparable to theDOC yield. Since DOC and nonfossil POC are directly related to theecosystem, their combined fluxes give a biogenic organic carbonyield of 8.7 ± 3.1 gC/m2/yr.  相似文献

Dissolved free amino acid (DFAA) concentration and composition and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration were measured over 16 months at three depths in hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa and in its two perenially inflowing rivers. The range of DFAA concentrations in the reservoir and both rivers were similar with dominant DFAA consisting of serine, glycine, alanine and ornithine in all three systems. The range of DOC concentrations in the rivers was 1.5–11.1 mg l–1, the major river (Crocodile) having about twice the DOC concentration of the Magalies River. The DFAA/DOC ratios ranged between 0.02–1.1% in the Crocodile River and 0.13–3.7% in the Magalies River. DFAA and DOC concentrations were positively correlated to the Magalies River flow, but for the Crocodile River, which received domestic and industrial effluents, DOC was inversely correlated to flow. The source of DFAA in both rivers was mainly terrestrial, in contrast to the main DOC source in the Crocodile River which was the effluents. The DFAA load of the Crocodile River ranged between 0.22 and 208 kg C d–1.DOC (5.0–24.8mg l–1) in Hartbeespoort Dam generally decreased with depth but DFAA (15–4800 nmol l–1) concentration showed no clear trend. The DFAA/DOC ratios varied between 0.02 and 2.9%. DFAA concentrations were correlated (r = 0.3, n = 30, p = 0.04) with bacterial numbers at 0 and 10 m only while no significant correlations were found with bacterial production, chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton primary and EDOC (extracellular DOC) production at any depth. The rate of bacterial utilization of DFAA was low compared with data from other lakes. Diurnal phytoplankton production of DFAA in the euphotic zone of the whole lake was calculated to vary between 268 and 30 780 t C d–1 indicating autochthonous DFAA sources were dominant to allochthonous DFAA sources. The autochthonous production of DFAA was > 2 × gross bacterial production of the euphotic zone indicating that although DFAA concentrations were frequently < 10 g C l–1, the rate of DFAA production exceeded bacterial requirements.  相似文献

Natural soil pipes, which have been widely reported in peatlands, have been shown to contribute significantly to total stream flow. Here, using measurements from eight pipe outlets, we consider the role of natural pipes in the transport of fluvial carbon within a 17.4‐ha blanket‐peat‐covered catchment. Concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC) from pipe waters varied greatly between pipes and over time, ranging between 5.3 and 180.6 mg L?1 for DOC and 0.08 and 220 mg L?1 for POC. Pipes were important pathways for peatland fluvial carbon export, with fluxes varying between 0.6 and 67.8 kg yr?1 (DOC) and 0.1 and 14.4 kg yr?1 (POC) for individual pipes. Pipe DOC flux was equivalent to 20% of the annual DOC flux from the stream outlet while the POC flux from pipes was equivalent to 56% of the annual stream POC flux. The proportion of different forms of aquatic carbon to total aquatic carbon flux varied between pipes, with DOC ranging between 80.0% and 91.2%, POC from 3.6% to 17.1%, dissolved CO2‐C from 2.4% to 11.1% and dissolved CH4‐C from 0.004% to 1.3%. The total flux of dissolved CO2‐C and CH4‐C scaled up to all pipe outlets in the study catchment was estimated to be 89.4 and 3.6 kg yr?1 respectively. Overall, pipe outlets produced discharge equivalent to 14% of the discharge in the stream but delivered an amount of aquatic carbon equivalent to 22% of the aquatic carbon flux at the catchment outlet. Pipe densities in blanket peatlands are known to increase when peat is affected by drainage or drying. Hence, environmental change in many peatlands may lead to an increase in aquatic carbon fluxes from natural pipes, thereby influencing the peatland carbon balance and downstream ecological processes.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and NO3 are important forms of C and N in stream water. Hypotheses concerning relationships between DOC and NO3 concentrations have been proposed, but there are no reports demonstrating a relationship between them in stream water. We observed 35 natural streams in the Lake Biwa watershed, central Japan, and found an inverse relationship between DOC and NO3 concentrations. This relationship was also found in observations of their seasonal variations in the Lake Biwa watershed. Moreover, this relationship was also found to apply to watersheds in other regions in Japan. These results suggest that forest biogeochemical processes which control DOC and NO3 concentrations in Japanese streams are closely related. Excess N availability together with a C (energy) deficit in a soil environment may explain this relationship. DOC and NO3 concentrations in streams will thus be a useful index indicating C and N availability in catchments.  相似文献

Solute, nutrient and bacterial inputs to the River Rhône from the interstitial habitat of a gravel bar and the floodplain aquifer were investigated during an artificial drought. Eight springs were investigated: four groundwater-fed springs in the floodplain, located at the bottom of the bank; and four interstitial-fed springs located at the downstream end of a gravel bar. During this period, the inflows of groundwater to the river represented an average input of 0.77 mg l–1 of nitrogen (of which 93.3% were nitrates), 0.0187 mg l–1 of total phosphorus (of which 42.2% was orthophosphate), 3.56 mg l–1 of silica, 2.315 ± 0.703 mg l–1 of dissolved organic carbon (DOC, of which 47% was biodegradable) and 7.3 × 104 ± 3.7 × 104 bacteria per ml (of which 8.8% were active). Silica, DOC, biodegradable DOC, and bacteria concentrations displayed temporal variations during the study, which seem to be linked to the biological activity of the groundwater biofilm. There was a strong heterogeneity between the two types of groundwater that flow to the river: concentrations of calcium and alkalinity were higher in bank springs than in gravel bars springs. In these latters, sulfate, sodium, nitrogen, phosphorus were significantly higher.  相似文献

Forest harvesting alters the organic matter cycle by changing litter inputs and the decomposition regime. We hypothesized that these changes would result in differences in organic matter chemistry between clear-cut and uncut watershed ecosystems. We studied the chemistry of soil organic matter (SOM), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil solutions and stream samples in clear-cut and uncut sites at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire using DOC fractionation techniques and solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.Alkyl-C (aliphatic compounds) and O-alkyl-C (carbohydrates) were the largest C fractions in soil and dissolved organic matter at Hubbard Brook. Alkyl-C ranged from 29–48% of soil C, 25–42% of soil solution C, and 22–42% of streamwater DOC. Carbohydrates comprised 32–49%, 36–43%, and 29–60% of C in soils, solutions, and streamwater, respectively. In both soils and soil solutions, the carbohydrate fraction decreased with increasing soil depth, while the aromaticity of organic matter increased with depth. There were no significant differences in the structural chemistry of SOM between clear-cut and uncut watersheds. The aromatic-C fractions in soil solutions at the clear-cut site ranged from 12–16%, approximately 40% greater than at the uncut site (8.5–11%). Thus, clear-cutting has resulted in the leaching of more highly decomposed organic matter, and depletion of more aliphatic compounds in the soluble organic pool. Because DOC fluxes are small compared to the SOM pool, large differences in soil solution chemistry do not substantially alter the overall composition of SOM. While the organic chemistry of stream DOC varied greatly among 3 sampling dates, there were no obvious clear-cutting effects. Thus, temporal variations in flowpaths and/or in-stream processes appear to be more important than disturbance in regulating the organic carbon chemistry of these streams.  相似文献

Scavenging of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by particulate metal oxides like Fe(OH)3(s) is one of three processes that can influence the concentration and composition of DOM in aquatic systems. The other two possible processes include photodegradation and biodegradation. In combination, these processes alter the concentration and composition of DOM systematically with increasing time, measured as hydrologic residence time (HRT). The objective of this research was to determine the change in Fe(OH)3(s)-scavengable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with increasing HRT (0–80 yr). In addition, DOC from allochthonous and autochthonous sources were included in this study. The susceptibility of DOC from surface waters to scavenging by Fe(OH)3(s) was found to decrease as a function of HRT, from approximately 90% to 79%. The lowest HRT system was operationally considered equivalent to allochthonous DOC, while autochthonous DOC was scavenged similarly to DOC from the 80 yr HRT system. These results indicate that scavenging of bulk DOC may be limited by metal loading in aquatic systems, and that the bulk of Fe(OH)3(s)-reactive DOC is from allochthonous sources. In addition, all surface waters treated with Fe(OH)3(s) contained approximately 1 mg l–1 of DOC that was resistant to scavenging (SD = 0.50, n = 5), which suggests that a refractory fraction of DOC persists in surface waters.  相似文献

The Catskill Mountains of southeastern New York State have among thehighest rates of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the United States. Somestreams draining Catskill catchments have shown dramatic increases in nitrateconcentrations while others have maintained low nitrate concentrations. Streamsin which exchange occurs between surface and subsurface (i.e. hyporheic) watersare thought to be conducive to nitrate removal via microbial assimilationand/ordenitrification. Hyporheic exchange was documented in the Neversink River inthesouthern Catskill Mountains, but dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrate(NO3 ) losses along hyporheic flowpaths werenegligible. In this study, Neversink River water was amended with natural, bioavailable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) (leaf leachate) in a series ofexperimental mesocosms that simulated hyporheic flowpaths. DOC and N dynamicswere examined before and throughout a three week BDOC amendment. In addition, bacterial production, dissolved oxygen demand, denitrification, and sixextracellular enzyme activities were measured to arrive at a mechanisticunderstanding of potential DOC and NO3 removalalong hyporheic flowpaths. There were marked declines in DOC and completeremoval of nitrate in the BDOC amended mesocosms. Independent approaches wereused to partition NO3 loss into two fractions:denitrification and assimilation. Microbial assimilation appears to be thepredominant process explaining N loss. These results suggest that variabilityinBDOC may contribute to temporal differences in NO3 export from streams in the Catskill Mountains.  相似文献
