We determined paternity for 78 sooty mangabeys [(Cercocebus torquatus atys (Groves, 1978) equivalent to C. atys (Napier and Napier, 1967)], born between 1986 and 1993, using DNA profile analysis. The analysis is based on two independent assays of the genome of each individual via multilocus DNA probes. The mangabeys were members of either a large (n = 98) or a small (n = 18) group. Overall, during two periods of analysis in the large group, higher-ranking males sired more offspring than their lower-ranking counterparts did, though during one period the correlation between dominance rank and reproductive success is not significant. Of the two males in the small group, the alpha male sired all of the offspring during one period. There is a significant correlation between mounts and the number of surviving offspring each male sired in one birth year. Moreover, the same male did not always sire the offspring of a given female from year to year. Behavioral data focusing on male–offspring interactions show that offspring (n = 15) did not preferentially affiliate with their sire and that males affiliated with infants too infrequently for analysis. Thus, in a large sooty mangabey colony: (1) dominance rank generally predicts reproductive success; (2) adult males are not preferentially attracted to their offspring, or infants to their sires; and (3) the same male generally does not sire the offspring of a given female from year to year.  相似文献

Synopsis Numbers of offspring produced by genetically marked male and female rainbow trout,Oncorhynchus mykiss were determined by an electrophoretic analysis of 1713 progeny from crosses produced by premixing gametes from different parents prior to insemination and associated full- and half-sib controls. We examined whether male potency, defined as the ability of males to sire progeny when their semen is pooled with that of other males, is affected by interaction with female gametes, concentration of sperm cells and the timing of semen application. Male potency differed significantly and was not affected by which of two females was involved in either of two sets of experiments. The differential between males decreased significantly when sperm concentrations were equalized. The first male sired over 75% of progeny when semen from four males was added sequentially to ova at 30 s intervals in each of two experiments. The lack of significant deviations of marker genotypes from expected Mendelian segregation in full-sib families suggested that there was no differential survival of progeny with specific marker genotypes. Furthermore, there was no correspondence between the survival of progeny of specific males in control crosses and the number of progeny sired in matings where sperm was premixed prior to insemination. Thus. variation in male reproductive success appeared the result of differential fertilization rates.  相似文献

In some primate species dominance rank of males is correlated with reproductive success, whereas in other species this relationship is inconsistent. Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) live in a promiscuous mating system in which males are ranked in a dominance hierarchy that influences their access to females. High-ranking males usually monopolize fertile females during their estrous period and show increased mating activities. Subadult males generally rank below adult males. For Barbary macaque females in the Gibraltar colony, there was no correlation between dominance status and reproductive success. Paternity data for 31 offspring collected over four consecutive breeding seasons were used to test whether male social rank was associated with reproductive success and whether reproductive success was mainly confined to a small number of males. Genetic variation was assessed using 14 microsatellite markers for a dataset of 127 individuals sampled in all five social groups of the Gibraltar colony. Paternity analysis was conducted for offspring in one social group only, where all in-group males were sampled. Eighty-three percent of the offspring could be assigned to an in-group candidate father; none of the extra-group males appeared to have sired an infant. Male dominance rank was not found to contribute to the observed variation in male reproductive output. Fifty-nine percent of the offspring was sired by two low-ranking males, whereas the two top-ranking males sired one-fifth. A highly significant correlation was found for male age and dominance rank. Reproductive success of subadult males might be explained by the gap in the age distribution of male group members. These missing prime males are usually regarded as serious competitors for older males. Subadult males may have gained easier access to females in their absence. In addition, the presence of inbreeding avoidance mechanisms, which might also have overpowered possible rank effects, cannot be excluded.  相似文献

We performed a controlled mating experiment to determine whether genetic variation in larval traits in Hyla crucifer was predictable on the basis of mating status or body size of male parent. Larval growth rate was predictably related to body size of the sire. Males from the upper half of the body-size distribution sired offspring with 6% higher growth rates than those of offspring sired by males from the lower half of the body-size distribution. Offspring sired by males that obtained mates in nature had 3% higher growth rates than their half-siblings sired by males that did not mate in nature. Genetic variation for larval-period duration and size at metamorphosis was detected; however, neither mating status nor body size of sire could be used to predict values of these traits in the progeny. Although all three larval traits can affect fitness, there was no evidence that the offspring of some sires would always outperform the offspring of others in all three traits. The predictable association between adult male size and larval growth rate means that the H. crucifer mating system would have a directional effect on larval growth rate if male body size influences the outcome of male-male competition or female choice.  相似文献

Parental identity for juvenile Littorina obtusata was determined from three egg masses by means of microsatellite DNA markers. Results confirm that the attendant adult female in each case was the dam of the offspring and that at least 4-6 males contributed to each brood. This correlates with our behavioral observations that indicated multiple copulations between the female and several males in each experimental aquarium. A significant number of offspring from each brood were sired by non-sampled males (males that had copulated with females before capture) whose sperm had been stored by the female. This is the first direct evidence of multiple paternity in the Littorinidae. Results are discussed in reference to current theories of sperm competition, male precedence, and cryptic female choice.

The number of offspring sired by individual bulls in multisired beef herds was determined by blood grouping. Six series of tests, each having from 3 to 18 bulls as possible sires,, yielded from 35 to 114 dam-offspring pairs. The paternity was established for 45 to 90 % of the calves tested in each series. The rest were cases with either more than 1 bull not being excluded as the possible sire, or all bulls excluded from being the sire. The causes for the non-established paternities are discussed. Highly significant differences were found in the number of offspring sired by each bull. In each series, bulls ranking in the top third of the siring order sired 65–100 % of the calves with established paternities. Since a minority of the bulls sired the majority of the calf-crop, the generally recomended number of bulls for herds on the range can perhaps be reduced.  相似文献

The reproductive success of male primates is not always associated with dominance status. For example, even though male orangutans exhibit intra-sexual dimorphism and clear dominance relationships exist among males, previous studies have reported that both morphs are able to sire offspring. The present study aimed to compare the reproductive success of two male morphs, and to determine whether unflanged males sired offspring in a free-ranging population of Bornean orangutans, using 12 microsatellite loci to determine the paternity of eight infants. A single flanged male sired most of the offspring from parous females, and an unflanged male sired a firstborn. This is consistent with our observation that the dominant flanged male showed little interest in nulliparous females, whereas the unflanged males frequently mated with them. This suggests that the dominant flanged male monopolizes the fertilization of parous females and that unflanged males take advantage of any mating opportunities that arise in the absence of the flanged male, even though the conception probability of nulliparous females is relatively low.  相似文献

In this study, the paternity of all the infants born in 2002 and 2003 in a free-ranging Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) group at Arashiyama in Kyoto, Japan, was analyzed in relation to males' age, dominance rank, and tenure and females' mate choice. The fathers of 20 out of 23 infants were determined by DNA analyses. Central adult (high-ranking) males sired two infants, whereas peripheral adult (low-ranking) males sired 14 infants. Young males sired only one infant. Among adult males, tenure was the most dominant factor that negatively affected male reproductive success. The mating behavior of females who gave birth was also analyzed. The number of male copulations in the peri-fertilization period was positively correlated with the number of infants that they sired. Females copulated with central males with a long tenure only when fertilization was unlikely or impossible. The females probably avoided insemination by males with a long tenure and selected males with a shorter tenure as their mating partners during the ovulation period.  相似文献

Mating system variation and morph fluctuations in a polymorphic lizard   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
In polymorphic male painted dragon lizards (Ctenophorus pictus), red males win staged contests for females over yellow males, and yellow males have greater success in staged sperm competition trials than red males. This predicts different reproductive strategies in the wild with red males being more coercive or better mate guarders than yellow males. Yellow males would be expected to sire more offspring per copulation and have a greater proportion of offspring from clutches with mixed paternity. However, here we show using microsatellites that the frequency of mixed paternity in the wild is low (< 20% on average across years), that all morphs on average have the same number of offspring sired per year, and that mating system variation (polyandry vs. monandry) is strongly correlated with perch density on male territories. Furthermore, a logistic regression on male successful vs. unsuccessful mate acquisition showed that red males were under negative selection when they dominated the population, which suggests ongoing frequency dependent selection on male colouration.  相似文献

Trivers proposed that, if parental care by both sexes is advantageous, males should practice a "mixed" strategy of seeking extrapair copulations, while restricting their parental investment to offspring of social mates. We explore circumstances under which males should limit their parental care in the predicted manner. We find that Trivers's "mixed" strategy will generally be evolutionarily stable so long as either socially monogamous or polygynous males usually sire more offspring per brood from a social mate than they typically sire in broods of extrapair mates. Polygynous males should spread investment across their home nests unless the expected number of chicks sired in them differs widely. Whether polygynous males should restrict paternal care to social mates' offspring hinges additionally on resident male investment in broods containing extrapair young: if resident males contribute minimally, some investment by a polygynous extrapair male becomes more advantageous. Recently reviewed data on extrapair fertilization distributions within monogamous and polygynous passerines suggest that extrapair offspring often predominate numerically within their broods, consistent with sperm expenditure theory. Nevertheless, most species conform to the model's criterion regarding relative parentage levels in broods of social versus extrapair mates. Patterns of extrapair parentage thus appear sufficient to stabilize biparental care systems.  相似文献

Foraging behaviour under the risk of predation has important consequences on an individual's survivorship and fitness. In bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), we have recently shown that offspring sired by males of alternative life histories differ in their foraging behaviour. Specifically, offspring sired by 'cuckolder' males take fewer risks during foraging than do offspring sired by 'parental' males. This behavioural difference can have important consequences on the fitness of the two life histories and thus the underlying evolutionary mechanism. Here, we examine the consequences of this behavioural variation on growth rate, condition and survivorship during early development of juveniles. We used split in vitro fertilization to generate maternal half-sibs that differed in sire life history. The resulting 18 455 larvae from 50 families were released into a microcosm with safe and risky foraging areas for approximately 2 months. A total of 262 juveniles (1.4%) survived of which parentage was unambiguously determined using microsatellite genetic markers for 254 (97%). Although we found significant dam effects, there was no difference in apparent growth rate or condition of juveniles sired by males of the two life histories. Of the 25 paired half-sib families, 15 had higher survivorship when sired by a cuckolder male, seven had higher survivorship when sired by a parental male and three had no surviving offspring from either sire. Thus, although growth was similar between the two offspring types, survivorship was not. Combining the differential survivorship estimate with paternity data from natural nests and the frequency of males adopting each life history, we calculated that the cuckolder life history has 1.87 times higher fitness than the parental life history. As such, the life histories likely are not governed by a genetic polymorphism.  相似文献

The immediate effects of female partner preference on male mating behaviors and its potential influence on male reproductive success and conception in the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) were analyzed. Although male dominance interactions probably led to low-ranking males having more single-day consortships and high-ranking males more multi-day consortships, dominant males were unable to prevent females from mating with preferred subordinate males. Ultimately, there was no marked difference in the number of estimated offspring sired. Females chose not to mate with certain males and actively mated with others, suggesting that female partner preferences do affect conception. Evidence for this was found in paternity estimates, which reflected observed preferences for particular middle-ranking young adult males.  相似文献

Changes in dominance rank for adolescent and subadult natal males in a semi-free-ranging rhesus macaque group were seasonal. Three 4-year-old natal males of the highest-ranking matriline occupied high ranks in the adult male dominance hierarchy during the premating period. In the mating season they dropped in rank, and this decrement was related to a concomitant drop in their alliances. After the mating season, these males rose in rank along with their two 3-year-old kin to occupy ranks 2–5 and 7–8 in the adult male dominance hierarchy. Three-year-old natal males of matrilines lower ranking than first did not become integrated into the hierarchy at this time.  相似文献

In the recent past, application of DNA genotyping techniques has enabled researchers to more accurately test relationships between dominance rank (DR), mating success (MS) and reproductive success (RS). Paternity studies often reveal that reproductive outcome does not always correlate with male DR and/or MS and thus open room for discussion and interpretation of alternative reproductive tactics of both sexes. In this study, we analysed male DR, MS and RS in a group of bonobos at Twycross Zoo (UK). Genetic relationships were determined using 8 tetrameric microsatellite loci. Despite clear and asymmetric dominance relationships, analysed using normalised David's scores based on a dyadic index of dominance among the group's 3 mature males, we found that the most dominant male did not sire the most offspring. In fact, both infants conceived during the observation period were found to be sired by the lower-ranking males. Although the alpha male had almost exclusive mating access to one of the females during the time she was showing a maximal anogenital swelling, her infant was sired by the lowest-ranking male who mostly mated with her when outside the maximal swelling period. This result suggests that either sperm competition operates and/or ovulation is decoupled from the phase of maximal anogenital swelling which could allow greater female choice.  相似文献

In a large majority of animal species, the only contribution of males to the next generation has been assumed to be their genes (sperm). However, along with sperm, seminal plasma contains a wide array of extracellular factors that have many important functions in reproduction. Yet, the potential intergenerational effects of these factors are virtually unknown. We investigated these effects in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) by experimentally manipulating the presence and identity of seminal plasma and by fertilizing the eggs of multiple females with the manipulated and unmanipulated semen of several males in a full‐factorial breeding design. The presence of both own seminal plasma and foreign seminal plasma inhibited sperm motility, and the removal of own seminal plasma decreased embryo survival. Embryos hatched significantly earlier after both semen manipulations than in control fertilizations; foreign seminal plasma also increased offspring aerobic swimming performance. Given that our experimental design allowed us to control potentially confounding sperm‐mediated (sire) effects and maternal effects, our results indicate that seminal plasma may have direct intergenerational consequences for offspring phenotype and performance. This novel source of offspring phenotypic variance may provide new insights into the evolution of polyandry and mechanisms that maintain heritable variation in fitness and associated female mating preferences.  相似文献

Differences in sperm fertilizing capacity of males often remain undetected by routine semen parameters. Heterospermic insemination with equal numbers of spermatozoa from 2 males is an accurate method for assessing differences in fertility. Use of heterospermic insemination depends on a reliable, efficient assay to identify paternity of conceptuses or offspring. In this study, polymorphic DNA markers amplified by PCR were tested to determine paternity of Day 5 to 6 embryos. The fertilizing capacity of 2 boars (A and B) with similar semen parameters was compared after homospermic (n=14 gilts) and heterospermic (n=11 gilts) insemination. Single AI's were performed under suboptimal conditions using 1 x 10(9) spermatozoa at 12 to 24 h before ovulation to prompt differences in fertilization and to stimulate sperm competition. The fertilization rate and the number of accessory spermatozoa were determined in Day 5 to 6 embryos. Using 5 different polymorphic DNA markers, paternity could be determined in 95.8% of the embryos. Boar B sired significantly (P<0.05) more offspring than Boar A after insemination with pooled semen, and this was reflected by a significantly (P<0.05) higher number of accessory spermatozoa following homospermic insemination with semen from Boar B, although fertilization rates did not differ between the 2 boars after homospermic insemination. The results suggest that the viability of spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract contributes to differences in fertility rates of males with similar in vitro sperm quality parameters. The number of accessory spermatozoa is a more sensitive measure of boar fertility than the fertilization rate. Polymorphic DNA markers are suitable for verification of parentage even at a very early stage of embryonic development.  相似文献

Social mating system and reproductive success in house wrens   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
Current models explaining the establishment and maintenanceof social monogamy and polygyny within avian populations typicallyassume that the reproductive success of polygynous males exceedsthat of monogamous males. This assumption is almost always supportedwhen the number of fledglings or recruits to future breedingpopulations is used to measure adult reproductive success. However, recent studies using DNA markers indicate that simple countsof fledglings or recruits may be a poor estimator of the numberof nestlings sired by the social father. In this paper, we comparethe number of genetic offspring produced by socially monogamousand polygynous house wren (TrogiodyUs atdon) males in nestsat which they were the social father. Polygynous males did,in fact, sire more nestlings in their own nests than did monogamousmales. Moreover, although we have not identified the sires ofextrapair nestlings, we document that even when all extrapairnestlings in this population are hypotheticaOy assigned to monogamousmales, die total reproductive success of polygynous males exceedsthat of monogamous males. These results and those of severalother recent studies are consistent with the assumption thatpolygynous males produce more offspring than monogamous males.  相似文献

In some species of Cercopithecine primates, unrelated adult males and females maintain affiliative relationships ('friendships') that are apparently unrelated to mating or parental care. This study investigated the occurrence of friendships in a captive group of pigtail macaques, and some of their possible determinants. Study subjects were six adult males and 15 adult females with their newborn infants. Females were focally observed for 2 h every week during the first 12 wk of lactation. With the exception of the fourth-ranking male, adult males showed little interest in initiating affiliative interactions with lactating females and their infants. Most episodes of contact and grooming were initiated by high-ranking females and directed to the alpha male. Because female grooming was not generally reciprocated by the alpha male, it is likely that females benefited from associating with him in terms of agonistic support or protection. Genetic data on paternity determination indicated that the fourth-ranking male, who displayed high levels of affiliation towards mother-infant dyads, sired most of the infants born in the group in the year prior to this study. Thus, whereas females may be interested in associating with males to obtain their support, some males may affiliate with females as a consequence of their previous mating relationships with them or to increase the chances of future mating success. Taken together, however, the findings of this study provide little evidence that adult males and lactating females maintain strong reciprocal bonds that may qualify as friendships.  相似文献

Rank relations of more than 100 juvenile and subadult natal Barbary macaque males were analyzed. Hierarchical relations among individuals of the same age were established early during the first year of life. With few exceptions concerning infants from very high-ranking genealogies, males dominated female peers regardless of maternal rank. Males started to outrank females from older cohorts during the second year of life and completed the process of rank reversal with adult females at 5-6 years of age. An age-graded dominance pattern existed among males from different birth cohorts. Only 3 rank reversals between males from different cohorts were observed. Rank reversals among males of the same birth cohort occurred more frequently. Rank position of a male among his male peers was influenced by birth order, by maternal rank, and by the presence of juvenile brothers. Most males without juvenile brothers had low positions, regardless of maternal rank. Males born late in the birth season were also low-ranking, even when juvenile brothers were present. There was no cohort where ranking among males was determined by maternal rank alone, as is the case in rhesus monkeys and Japanese macaques. Adult/subadult male carriers had no noticeable effect on rank positions of 'their' infants. It is suggested that a weaker influence of Barbary macaque mothers on rank of their sons is related to very early integration of male infants in male social/play groups.  相似文献
