The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of caffeine ingestion and partial sleep deprivation at the end of night on cognitive and physical performance. In randomised order, fourteen football players (age: 23.57 ± 1.98 years; body weight: 59.57 ± 4.29 kg; height: 174.35 ± 5.07 cm) completed four test sessions at 08:00 h: after placebo or 3 mg·kg?1 of caffeine ingestion during a reference night, RN (bed time: from 22:30 h to 07:00 h) or a night of partial sleep deprivation, PSD (bed time: from 22:30 h to 03:00 h). During each test session, participants assessed vigilance and reaction times and performed a series of tests: cancelation test, squat jumps (SJ), and the 30-s Wingate test (for the measurement of peak power, PP, and mean power, PM). During RN, results showed that PP, PM, SJ, and vigilance increased after caffeine ingestion in comparison with placebo (p < 0.001). Moreover, both simple and choice reactions were significantly better after caffeine ingestion in comparison with placebo ingestion (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Results showed that reaction time, vigilance, and SJ were affected by PSD, even though PP, PM, and SJ were not affected, the following day at 08:00 h. During the PSD condition, PP, PM, SJ, and vigilance were significantly higher after caffeine ingestion in comparison with placebo ingestion (p < 0.001). However, both simple and choice reaction times were significantly poorer during PSD in comparison with RN (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Therefore, ingesting caffeine is an effective strategy to maintain physical and cognitive performances after PSD.  相似文献

The present study sought to compare the effects of a restricted and unrestricted sleep schedule on shooting, cognitive performance and measures of sleepiness and fatigue of Asian, adolescent high-level student athletes. Twenty-four (12 female; 14.1 ± 1.4 years) athletes performed assessments of shooting and cognitive performance (psychomotor vigilance and working memory) at the start and end of five-day restricted or unrestricted sleep (two conditions). Restricted sleep during a five-day training week resulted in no significant performance changes in cognitive or shooting performance compared with unrestricted sleep during a five-day training week, despite there being moderate-to-strong associations between increases in total sleep time and certain aspects of shooting performance. Daytime fatigue levels during the unrestricted sleep period were significantly lower than during sleep restriction. These findings highlight the relationships between nocturnal sleep extension and shooting performance amongst high-level athletes.  相似文献

[Purpose]We determined the effect of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) after an exercise session on exercise performance on the following morning.[Methods]Eleven male athletes performed either a normal sleep trial (CON) or a PSD trial. On the first day (day 1), all subjects performed an exercise session consisting of 90 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max) followed by 100 drop jumps. Maximal strength (MVC) was evaluated before and after exercise. In the CON trial, the sleep duration was 23:00–7:00, while in the PSD trial, the sleep duration was shortened to 40% of the regular sleep duration. On the following morning (day 2), MVC, the metabolic responses during 20 min of running (at 75% V˙O2max), and time to exhaustion (TTE) at 85% V˙O2max were evaluated.[Results]On day 2, neither the MVC nor  V˙O2 during 20 min of running differed significantly between the two trials. However, the respiratory exchange ratio was significantly lower in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01). Moreover, the TTE was significantly shorter in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01).[Conclusion]A single night of PSD after an exercise session significantly decreased endurance performance without significantly changing muscle strength or cardiopulmonary response.  相似文献

The cellular and molecular processes that underlie the drives and functions of sleep have been the topic of many studies in the last few decades. Discovery-based techniques, such as cDNA microarrays, have increasingly been utilized in conjunction with sleep deprivation paradigms to examine the molecular mechanisms and functions of sleep. These studies have helped to validate and expand existing hypotheses, such as those on the roles of sleep in synaptic plasticity and in energy metabolism. The mechanisms underlying the highly prevalent changes in sleep architecture with age are not known, but likely reflect fundamental changes in the molecular basis of circadian timing and sleep homeostatic processes. We decided to explore the effects and interactions of sleep deprivation and aging utilizing the proteomic technique of difference in gel electrophoresis (DIGE). DIGE, which utilizes cyanine dye labeling of samples, allows for the comparison of multiple experimental groups within and across gels. In this study, we compared cerebral cortex tissue from young (2.5 months) and old (24 months) mice that had been sleep deprived for 6 h to tissue from undisturbed young and old control animals. Following DIGE, automatic image matching and spot identification, and statistical analysis, 43 unique proteins were identified. The proteins were grouped into seven functional classes based on published characteristics: cell signaling, cytoskeletal, energy metabolism, exocytosis, heat shock proteins, mRNA processing/trafficking, and serum proteins. The identity and characteristics of these proteins relevant to sleep and aging are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether motorcycle handling capabilities--measured by means of the efficiency of emergency manoeuvres--were dependent on prior sleep deprivation and time of day. Twelve male participants voluntarily took part in four test sessions, starting at 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m., following a night either with or without sleep. Each test session comprised temperature and sleepiness measurements, before three different types of motorcycling tests were initiated: (1) stability in straight ahead riding at low speed (in "slow motion" mode and in "brakes and clutch" mode), (2) emergency braking and (3) crash avoidance tasks performed at 20 kph and 40 kph. The results indicate that motorcycle control at low speed depends on time of day, with an improvement in performance throughout the day. Emergency braking performance is affected at both speeds by time of day, with poorer performance (longer total stopping distance, reaction time and braking distance) in the morning, and also by sleep deprivation, from measurements obtained at 40 kph (incorrect initial speed). Except for a tendency observed after the sleepless night to deviate from the initial speed, it seems that crash avoidance capabilities are quite unaffected by the two disturbance factors. Consequently, some motorcycle handling capabilities (stability at low speed and emergency braking) change in the same way as the diurnal fluctuation observed in body temperature and sleepiness, whereas for others (crash avoidance) the participants were able to maintain their initial performance level despite the high levels of sleepiness recorded after a sleepless night. Motorcycle riders have to be aware that their handling capabilities are limited in the early morning and/or after sleep deprivation. Both these situations can increase the risk of falls and of being involved in a road accident.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of time of day on visuospatial attention in trained subjects. We used the line-bisecting task. The protocol involved 30 healthy volunteer female soccer players (age: 21.1 ± 2.1 years, level of experience: 8.1 ± 3.2 years, height: 1.7 ± 0.03 cm, weight: 59.2 ± 3.49 kg). They performed two-test sessions at different times of day, 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. The results showed a significant time-of-day effect on line-bisecting performance, with a better precision in the evening than in the morning. The rightward error observed in the morning was reversed in the evening. An interaction between time of day x length was also observed, indicating that the difference in performance between the morning and the evening increased with the length of the line. We conclude that activities that require better visuospatial performance should be programed to take place in the evening.  相似文献

Sleep deprivation (SD) is suggested to be associated with reduced thermo-regulatory functions. This study aimed to quantify the effect of partial (PSD) and total (TSD) 24?h SD using a standard heat tolerance test (HTT). Eleven participants underwent HTT after well-rested state, PSD and TSD. No significant physiological differences were found between the exposures but subjective discomfort was higher after TSD. Evening chronotypes' temperature during HTT was higher after TSD compared with PSD (p = 0.017). After TSD, evening chronotypes compared to intermediate chronotypes' temperature was higher during the first hour of the HTT (p?<?0.05), suggesting that thermo-regulatory function during exercise in the heat is influenced by chronotype.  相似文献

It is well known that sleep disorders are harmful to people's health and performance, and growing evidence suggests that sleep deprivation (SD ) can trigger neuroinflammation in the brain. The nucleotide‐binding domain and leucine‐rich repeat protein‐3 (NLRP 3) inflammasome is reported to be relevant to the neuroinflammation induced by SD , but the regulatory signaling that governs the NLRP 3 inflammasome in SD is still unknown. Meanwhile, whether the regulatory action of antidepressants in astrocytes could affect the neuroinflammation induced by SD also remains obscure. In this study, we were the first to discover that the antidepressant fluoxetine, a type of specific serotonin reuptake inhibitor widely used in clinical practice, could suppress the neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis induced by SD . The main findings from this study are as follows: (i) SD stimulated the expression of activated NLRP 3 inflammasomes and the maturation of IL ‐1β/18 via suppressing the phosphorylation of STAT 3 in astrocytes; (ii) SD decreased the activation of AKT and stimulated the phosphorylation of GSK ‐3β, which inhibited the phosphorylation of STAT 3; (iii) the NLRP 3 inflammasome expression stimulated by SD was partly mediated by the P2X7 receptor; (iv) an agonist of STAT 3 could significantly abolish the expression of NLRP 3 inflammasomes induced by an agonist of the P2X7 receptor in primary cultured astrocytes; (v) the administration of fluoxetine could reverse the stimulation of NLRP 3 inflammasome expression and function by SD through elevating the activation of STAT 3. In conclusion, our present research suggests the promising possibility that fluoxetine could ameliorate the neuronal impairment induced by SD .

This study represents a first controlled comparison of restricted versus unrestricted sleep in both day and night sleep categories. A repeated measures study of a homogenous group of young women without sleep disorders (n=14) found that stage 1, 2, 3 and REM sleep, as well as sleep latency were not statistically different between day ad libitum sleep (DAL) and day interrupted (DI) sleep categories, while night interrupted (NI) and ad libitum (NAL) sleep showed strikingly different architecture.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of caffeine ingestion and partial sleep deprivation on mood and cognitive and physical performances. In randomised order, 12 healthy male physical education students completed four test sessions at 18:00 h after placebo or 5 mg/kg of caffeine ingestion during a baseline night (RN) (bed time: from 22:00 to 07:00 h), or during a night of partial (four hrs) sleep deprivation (PSD). During each test session, participants performed a reaction time test, a vigilance test, the 10 s Wingate cycling test during (measuring peak power (PP) and anaerobic capacity), and the 5 m multiple shuttle test (measuring peak distance (PD), total distance (TD), and fatigue index (FI)). Compared to RN, simple reaction time, vigilance, PP, PD, TD, and FI were altered by PSD the following day after placebo ingestion with increased reaction time and FI and reduced PP, PD, TD, and vigilance (p < 0.001). Moreover, during PSD condition, PP, PD, and TD were significantly higher after caffeine ingestion in comparison with placebo ingestion (p < 0.05). However, both simple reaction times and vigilance were significantly lower after caffeine ingestion in comparison with placebo during PSD (p < 0.05). Caffeine is an effective strategy to maintain physical and cognitive performances the day after PSD.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a total sleep deprivation (TSD) on the egocentric distance estimation following a fatiguing task (i.e. sprint repetitions). Ten soccer players (age: 22.8 ± 1.3 years; weight: 72. 8 ± 10 .5 kg; height: 1.8 ± 0.03 m) were volunteered to participate in the study. Subjects were invited to estimate different distances in two different sessions (i) following a reference night and (ii) following a night of TSD. The distance estimation consists to perceive three different distances (15, 25, and 35 m) before and after a repeated sprint exercise on a cycloergometer. The results demonstrated a significant effect of TSD on the perception of egocentric distance (F (1.9) = 11.22, p < 0.01). Indeed, the results showed an underestimation (compression of the real distance) of all distances at rest and following the repeated sprint exercise. Additionally, the underestimation was more acute after the fatiguing task. TSD affects the estimation of egocentric distance by soccer players at rest and following fatiguing task.  相似文献

The three-dimensional cube-in-globe model predicts the possibility to delineate six main adaptive abilities of the sleep - wake cycle (Putilov & Putilov, 2005). Such prediction led to the inclusion of a new sixth scale named “daytime wakeability” (Putilov & Putilov, 2006; Putilov, 2007) in the Sleep-Wake Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SWPAQ; Putilov, 1990, 2000). This new scale permits self-assessment of the ability to keep waking at daytime in sleep provoking conditions. In the study reported here we applied the procedure of adaptive segmentation of the EEG record (SECTION 0.1®, Human Brain Research Group, Moscow State University) to determine whether sleep deprivation changes the temporal pattern of alpha activity and, if yes, whether this change is associated with state and trait self-measures of alertness/sleepiness including a score on “daytime wakeability” scale. In the course of sustained wakefulness, EEG was recorded nine times with three-hour intervals in frontal and occipital derivations in 39 healthy subjects. The procedure of adaptive segmentation allowed cutting EEG records on quasi-stationary segments and determining such characteristics of each segment as within-segmental amplitude, coefficient of its variation and segment length. These characteristics obtained in the morning hours on the first and second experimental days were compared. They were found to increase in the second morning, when eyes are open, but do not change when eyes are closed. It was also documented that “daytime wakeability” score along with other trait and state self-measures of alertness/sleepiness can serve as predictors of the response of alpha waves to sleep deprivation.  相似文献

REM sleep is essential for maintenance of body physiology and its deprivation is fatal. We observed that the levels of ALT and AST enzymes and pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-12 circulating in the blood of REM sleep deprived rats increased in proportion to the extent of sleep loss. But in contrast the levels of IFN-γ and a ∼200 kDa protein, identified by N-terminal sequencing to be alpha-1-inhibitor-3(A1I3), decreased significantly. Quantitative PCR analysis confirmed that REM sleep deprivation down regulates AII3 gene and up regulates IL1 β, IL6 and their respective receptors gene expression in the liver initiating its inflammation.  相似文献

Morningness-eveningness, time of day, and physical exercises have been shown to influence mood states. This study aimed to test whether impact of physical exercise on mood depends on time of day and chronotype. Ninety-four participants (age 32 ± 6 years; 34% females; weekly training volume 4 ± 1 hours) filled the Composite Scale of Morningness and reported their current mood using the UWIST Mood Adjective Checklist before and after a 60-min long CrossFit training session which took part in the morning (beginning at 6:30 or 7:45) or in the evening (beginning at 19:30 or 20:45). In this quasi-experiment the measurements were taken by the occasion of the participants’ usual training, in their preferred hours. There were only a few evening-types in the studied sample, while morning and intermediate chronotypes were over-represented. Participation in CrossFit training resulted in mood improvement consisting of increase in energetic arousal (η2 = 0.29) and hedonic tone (η2 = 0.47) and reduction of tense arousal (η2 = 0.14), all significant at p = 0.001. Furthermore, CrossFit training during morning hours boosted mood in the intermediate/evening chronotype group to the levels observed in morning chronotypes (η2 = 0.29, p < 0.05, for the three-way interaction effect). We conclude that participation in intense physical exercise, such as CrossFit training, may allow compensation for the negative effects of non-optimal time of day on experienced moods, particularly in the case of neither/evening-types.  相似文献
