The Persian dwarf snake Eirenis (Pseudocyclophis) persicus (Anderson, 1872) has a wide distribution range in south‐western Asia. This species group was comprehensively studied here using traditional biometry, geometric morphometrics, ecological niche modelling, and genetics. Our analyses revealed that E. persicus is split into two clades. A western clade, bearing at least two different species: E. persicus, distributed in south‐western Iran, and an undescribed species from south‐eastern Turkey and western Iran. The eastern clade consists of at least three species: Eirenis nigrofasciatus, distributed across north‐eastern Iraq, and western and southern Iran; Eirenis walteri, distributed across eastern Iran, southern Turkmenistan, and western and southern Pakistan, and Eirenis angusticeps, distributed in north‐eastern Pakistan. Ecological niche modelling revealed that the distribution of the species in the western clade are mainly affected by winter precipitation, and those in the eastern clade are mainly affected by the minimum temperature of the coldest month. A molecular clock analysis revealed that the divergence and diversification of the E. persicus species group mainly correspond to Eocene to Pliocene orogeny events subsequent to the Arabia–Eurasia collision. This study confirms that specimens with the unique morphology of having 13 dorsal scale rows on the anterior dorsum, occurring in the Suleiman Mountains in central Pakistan, can be referred to Eirenis mcmahoni (Wall, 1911). However, at this moment we have insufficient data to evaluate the taxonomy of this species.  相似文献

The mosquito Anopheles stephensi is an important malaria vector in India, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. Differences in egg morphology and chromosomal characters have been described between urban and rural forms of this mosquito but the population genetic structure remains unclear. In India this species is mainly urban, rural populations are largely zoophilic and not thought to transmit malaria. In eastern Afghanistan and the Punjab and Northwest Frontier Province, Pakistan, it is the major malaria vector. We have developed primers for 16 microsatellite loci to assist in defining the population structure and epidemiological importance of this mosquito.  相似文献

Rhazya stricta Decne is an important medicinal species used in indigenous medicinal herbal drugs to cure various diseases in South Asia (Pakistan, India and Afghanistan) and in the Middle East (e.g. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iran and Iraq). Some of its alkaloids have been reported to have anticancerous properties. The aim of our study is to examine the morphological and taxonomical parameters for R. stricta in the Saudi Arabia; concentrations and distributions of some secondary metabolites; and also to determine the antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity. The results of present study showed that there was no influence of environment on the structure of stomata and trichomes as studying species with R. stricta. In conclusion our study shows no trichomes on leaf of R. stricta it is glabrous, whereas, variations between many secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds occurred in response to changing climatic conditions.  相似文献

A stock culture of cotton leaf curl virus from Pakistan (CLCuV-PK), was transmitted by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) to seven plant species, including French bean, okra, tobacco and tomato, and caused vein thickening and leaf curl symptoms. It was readily detected in triple antibody sandwich ELISA (TAS-ELIS A) by 11 out of 31 monoclonal antibodies raised against the particles of three other geminiviruses: African cassava mosaic, Indian cassava mosaic and okra leaf curl viruses. Reaction strength was enhanced when the tissue extraction fluid contained sodium sulphite. Minor variations in epitope profile were found among virus isolates from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) collected from different districts in Pakistan over a 5-year period. These epitope profiles were distinguishable from that of cotton leaf curl virus from G. barbadense in southern India but indistinguishable from the profiles of viruses causing yellow vein disease of okra in India or Pakistan, or leaf curl of okra {Abelmoschus esculentus), Hibiscus tiliaceus, radish or sunflower in Pakistan, suggesting that these plants are putative natural hosts of CLCuV-PK. The viruses in cotton, and in okra with leaf curl or yellow vein symptoms, were also detected by PCR with three pairs of CLCuV-PK-specific primers. Five additional whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses were found among isolates from 11 other naturally-infected species in Pakistan, and were distinguished by their epitope profiles. These viruses were associated, respectively, with tobacco leaf curl, squash yellow blotch, tomato yellow leaf curl, watermelon leaf crinkle and soybean yellow mosaic diseases. The first four of these viruses were detected readily by PCR with geminivirus general primers but only weakly, if at all, with two pairs of CLCuV-PK-specific primers. Pakistani crops are infected with a range of distinguishable but relatively closely related whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses, some of which resemble those found in India.  相似文献

Whitefly transmitted begomoviruses (family Geminiviridae) are the major reason for significant yield losses of dicotyledonous crops in tropics and subtropics. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is one of the important vegetable crops, and leaf curl disease caused by geminiviruses is the most important limiting factor for its production in Pakistan. Here, we report a new species of okra‐infecting begomovirus in south‐eastern region of Pakistan and the name Okra enation leaf curl virus (OELCuV) complex is proposed. This okra enation leaf curl disease complex (OELCuD) in Pakistan is found to be associated with Ageratum conyzoides symptomless alphasatellite (AConSLA). All efforts to clone the betasatellite were unsuccessful. Comprehensive sequence analyses suggest that intermalvaceous recombination between okra and cotton‐infecting begomoviruses resulted in the evolution of the new species. Surprisingly, Bhendi yellow vein mosaic virus (BYVMV) which has not been reported previously from Pakistan is the major parent while Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV) acts as a distant parent of the virus. Comparative recombination analysis also reveals that okra‐infecting begomoviruses from south and north‐western India is causing OELCuD in the Pakistan by recombining with CLCuMV at the Rep (1964–1513 nts). Recombination is common among geminiviruses and recombining of BYVMV and CLCuMV resulted in a new species: OELCuV. To the best of our knowledge, this evolution of a new species of okra‐infecting begomovirus is the first report of intermalvaceous recombination where Rep acts as the target region.  相似文献

Aims A molecular genetic distance study has been used in an initial survey to identify subspecies and genotypes of the weed Acacia nilotica in Australia, information needed to find suitable biocontrol agents. We use patterns of DNA sequence variation (in two DNA fragments) from each of the nine described subspecies of Acacia nilotica (L.) Delile (Leguminosae: Mimosoideae) that is to determine their genetic similarity, to verify if the Australian populations are A. nilotica ssp. indica (Benth.) Brenan, and to establish if any other subspecies are present in Australia. Location Australia and southern Africa through the Arabian peninsular to the Indo‐Pakistan subcontinent. Methods Representative specimens from the global distribution of the nine A. nilotica subspecies were sourced primarily from herbaria sheet specimens where available, and secondarily from field collections. These specimens together with related outgroups from Mimosoideae were genetically analysed using the DNA fragments trnL and internal transcribed spacer one (ITS1). We calculated a similarity index as set out in paup * using upgma (Unweighted Pair‐Group Method Arithmetic average) methods to cluster taxa to produce a genetic distance phenogram. Results Sequence results from ITS1 and trnL DNA fragments identified seven of the described subspecies of A. nilotica. Acacia nilotica ssp. cupressiformis (J. Stewart) Ali & Faruqi and A. nilotica ssp. adstringens (Schumach. & Thonn.) Roberty were not found to be genotypically distinct from A. nilotica ssp. indica and A. nilotica ssp. nilotica, respectively, based on the two DNA fragments. Subspecific ITS1 genotypes were geographically distributed similarly to previous reports that were based on morphology, with the exception that the hemispherica ITS1 genotype also occurred in Somalia. We confirmed that the Australian A. nilotica populations are mostly comprised of subspecies indica, but in addition, some individuals were found to be genetically identical to an unidentified Pakistan genotype not previously reported as occurring in Australia. Main conclusions Australian A. nilotica populations originated from India and Pakistan and we recommend further analysis to determine the complete genetic diversity profile and origins of the Australian populations. We highlight the importance of determining any hybridization between Australian populations of A. nilotica and native subgenus Acacia species. This study demonstrates the importance of genotyping weed species targeted for biocontrol and/or listed host specificity test species that may be easily misidentified. Biocontrol practitioners can justify genetic studies by considering the costs should a project fail through misidentification.  相似文献

Across their ranges, different populations of migratory species often use separate routes to migrate between breeding and non-breeding grounds. Recent changes in climate and land-use have led to breeding range expansions in many species but it is unclear whether these populations also establish new migratory routes, non-breeding sites and migration phenology. Thus, we compared the migration patterns of European Bee-eaters Merops apiaster from two established western (n = 5) and eastern (n = 6) breeding populations in Europe, with those from a newly founded northern population (n = 19). We aimed to relate the breeding populations to the two known non-breeding clusters in Africa, and to test for similarities of migration routes and timing between the old and new populations. Western Bee-eaters used the western flyway to destinations in West Africa; the eastern birds uniformly headed south to southern African non-breeding sites, confirming a complete separation in time and space between these long-established populations. The recently founded northern population, however, also used a western corridor, but crossed the Mediterranean further east than the western population and overwintered mainly in a new non-breeding area in southern Congo/northern Angola. The migration routes and the new non-breeding range overlapped only slightly with the western, but not with the eastern, population. In contrast, migration phenology appeared to differ between the western and both the northern and the eastern populations, with tracked birds from the western population migrating 2–4 weeks earlier. The northern population thus shares some spatial traits with western Bee-eaters, but similar phenology only with eastern population. This divergence highlights the adjustments in the timing of migration to local environmental conditions in newly founded populations, and a parallel establishment of new breeding and non-breeding sites.  相似文献

We investigated the phylogeny and phylogeography of four closely related Ainsliaea species (Asteraceae) on the continental Ryukyu Islands of eastern Asia, which consist of two flood-adapted “rheophyte” and two non-rheophyte (inland) species, based on 12 nuclear microsatellite loci. Phylogenetic analyses using 420 individuals from 26 populations showed that rheophytic A. linearis and A. oblonga are genetically distinct. Each species was clustered with the inland species that occur on the same islands, suggesting a different ancestry for the two rheophytes that evolved independently by local adaptation to flooded habitats. The results from the neighbor-joining clustering and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) indicate that the southern populations of A. macroclinidioides are distinct lineages and ancestral to the northern populations as well as the other diverse species complex in the Ryukyus. These results suggest a pattern of colonization initially from the Asian mainland to the southern islands, followed by the northern islands via land bridges generated during the Quaternary glaciations. After isolation from southern populations, species radiation and regional differentiation within the northern clade occurred possibly via local adaptation and/or geographic isolation of the subdivided island bridge.  相似文献

Most studies of hibernation physiology sample individuals from populations within a single geographic area, yet some species have large ranges meaning populations likely experience area-specific levels of energetic challenges. As well, few studies have assessed within-season variation. Since physiological adjustments often are influenced by environmental factors, and the types of environments vary with geography, we expected variance in hibernation patterns among geographically separated populations. Our specific goal was to measure intraspecific variation in torpid metabolic rate (TMR) and body temperature (T b) as a function of ambient temperature (T a) for a non-migratory and migratory species to determine whether there is a continuum in physiological responses based on latitude. We chose big brown (Eptesicus fuscus) and eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) as model species and sampled individuals from populations throughout each species’ winter range. In both species, individuals from southern populations maintained higher TMR at cooler T as and lower TMR at warmer T as than those from northern populations. Big brown bats from southern populations regulated T b during torpor at higher levels and there was no significant difference in T b between populations of eastern red bats. Although metabolic responses were similar across the gradient between species, the effect was more dramatic in big brown bats. Our data demonstrate a continuum in thermoregulatory response, ranging from classic hibernation in northern populations to a pattern more akin to daily torpor in southern populations. Our research highlights the potential usefulness of bats as model organisms to address questions about within-species physiological variation in wild populations.  相似文献

To evaluate the genetic diversity of a mangrove species and clarify the genetic structure of its populations, we studied nucleotide polymorphism in two DNA regions of Bruguiera gymnorhiza collected from the southern islands of Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Micronesia, and India. The two DNA sequences were the chloroplast (cp) intergenic spacer between trnL and trnF genes (ca. 300 bp), and a part (ca. 550 bp) of the nuclear gene coding for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GapCp). Little polymorphism was found within each of the three geographical regions, Pacific Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. Throughout the vast regions east of the Malay peninsula including Indonesia, Thailand, Micronesia and the southern islands of Japan (Pacific Ocean), essentially only one haplotype (apart from variation in number of a T repeat) was present. A second haplotype was present on the western coast of Malay Peninsula and the eastern coast of India (Bay of Bengal). On the southwest of Malay Peninsula both of these haplotypes were present. Finally a third haplotype was found only on the western coast of India (Arabian Sea). When taken over all geographic populations, total nucleotide variation within the species was large (μ = 0.006, average of the two genes). Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that this low genetic diversity within any local population and differentiation between the different oceans or regions are caused by very low gene flow between each of the different oceans coupled with frequent fluctuation of population sizes due to the change in sea level. The significance of these results is discussed from evolutionary point of the mangrove forests.  相似文献

Using up to 2117 bp of mitochondrial DNA and up to 2012 bp of nuclear DNA, we analysed phylogeographic differentiation of six widely distributed species of African hinged terrapins (Pelusios spp.) representing different habitat types. Two taxa each live in savannahs or in forests and mesic savannahs, respectively, and the remaining two species occur in intermediate habitats. The species living in forests and mesic savannahs do not enter dry savannahs, whereas the savannah species may occur in dry and wet savannahs and even in semi‐arid steppe regions. We found no obvious correlation between habitat type and phylogeographic pattern: one savannah species (P. rhodesianus) shows phylogeographic structure, i.e. pronounced genetic differences among geographically distinct populations, and the other (P. nanus) not. One species inhabiting forests and mesic savannahs (P. carinatus) has phylogeographic structure, the other (P. gabonensis) not. The same pattern is true for the two ecologically intermediate species, with phylogeographic structure present in P. castaneus and absent in P. chapini. Nuclear evidence suggests that the latter two taxa with abutting and partially overlapping ranges are distinct, while mtDNA is only weakly differentiated. Pelusios castaneus shows pronounced phylogeographic structure, which could reflect Pleistocene range interruptions correlated with the fluctuating forest cover in West and Central Africa. Our results do not support the recognition of an extinct subspecies of P. castaneus for the Seychelles. Pelusios carinatus contains two well supported clades, which are separated by the Congo River. This species is closely related to P. rhodesianus, a taxon consisting of two deeply divergent mitochondrial clades. One of these clades is paraphyletic with respect to P. carinatus, but the two clades of P. rhodesianus are not differentiated in the studied nuclear markers and, again, paraphyletic with respect to P. carinatus. Using mtDNA sequences from the type material of P. rhodesianus, we were able to allocate this name to one of the two clades. However, owing to the confusing relationships of P. rhodesianus and P. carinatus, we refrain from taxonomic decisions.  相似文献

Geographical patterns for quantitative traits in Drosophila and other insects are commonly used to investigate climatic selection. They are usually determined from comparisons of populations over extensive areas and based on one collection per population. Here we consider patterns in the Australian endemic species Drosophila serrata established over a shorter transect with repeated sampling. Summer (prewinter) and spring (post-winter) collections were made from 10 to 14 localities, incorporating the southern border of D.serrata and extending approximately 1000 km northwards along the eastern coast of Australia. Linear or curvilinear associations with latitude were evident for development time, viability and cold resistance but patterns differed between collections. Some geographical (population) and genetic associations between traits were found and these also tended to differ between collections. Results confirm the importance of cold stress resistance over winter to the southern border of this species. Microsatellite markers were developed for D.serrata. These indicated a low level of genetic differentiation between populations, high levels of gene flow and no evidence that the most southerly populations were isolated. The results suggest that selection generated geographical patterns in cold resistance, development time and viability, and that substantial gene flow may prevent adaptation at the border to conditions beyond the current distribution of D. serrata.  相似文献

Justicia areysiana Deflers (Acanthaceae) is an endemic shrub of the monsoon affected coastal mountains of the southern Arabian Peninsula with ballochorous seed dispersal. Its occurrence in a vegetation belt of relics of the (semi)-evergreen Afro-montane woodland characterised by Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata and Juniperus procera above an elevation of c. 750-800 m is strongly dependent on the activity of the Indian Ocean southwest monsoon. Therefore, the species offers a good model to study the palaeo-climate induced habitat fragmentation of the once continuous distribution range of the Afro-montane woodland belt on the southern Arabian Peninsula. Thirteen populations from the total distribution range of the species were analysed using AFLP fingerprinting and show a distinct geographic distribution pattern with a main split between eastern (Hawf Mountains/Dhofar) and western/central populations (Jabal Urays, Jabal Gedu, Kor Seiban). Our results on the genetic differentiation of populations clearly demonstrate the strong isolation among populations and confirm geographical patterns found in former studies based on chloroplast haplotypes. The dating of the main regional split between eastern and western/central populations based on nrDNA ITS sequence variation, is dated to 0.8–1.8 Myr before present. This indicates drastic habitat fragmentation processes during the Pleistocene which are compatible with periods of aridisation assumed for the African continent at around 1.7 Myr and 1.0 Myr before present.  相似文献

Hibiscus leaf curl disease (HLCuD) occurs widely in India. Infected hibiscus plants show vein thickening, upward curling of leaves and enations on the abaxial leaf surface, reduction in leaf size and stunting. The commonly‐occurring weeds (Ageratum conyzoides, Croton bonplandianum and Euphorbia geniculata), Nicotiana benthamiana, Nicotiana glutinosa and Nicotiana tabacum (var. Samsun, Xanthi), cotton and tomato were shown to be susceptible to HLCuD. One of the four species of hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa‐sinensis) and 75 of the 101 commercial hybrids/varieties grown in the Bangalore area of southern India were also susceptible. Two virus isolates associated with HLCuD from Bangalore, South India (Ban), and Bhubaneswar, North India (Bhu), were detected serologically and by PCR‐mediated amplification of virus genomes. The isolates were characterised by sequencing a fragment of DNA‐A component (1288 nucleotides) and an associated satellite DNA molecule of 682 nucleotides. Phylogenetic analyses of these DNA‐A sequences clustered them with Old World cotton‐infecting begomoviruses and closest to Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV) at 95–97% DNA‐A nucleotide identities. The 682‐nucleotide satellite DNA molecules associated with the HLCuD samples Ban and Bhu shared 96.9% sequence identity with each other and maximum identity (93.1–93.9% over positions 158–682) with ~1350‐nucleotide DNA‐β satellite molecules associated with cotton leaf curl disease in Pakistan and India (accession nos AJ298903, AJ316038). HLCuD in India, therefore, appears to be associated with strains of CLCuMV, a cotton‐infecting begomovirus from Pakistan, which is transmitted in a persistent manner by Bemisia tabaci.  相似文献

The Chestnut‐banded Plover Charadrius pallidus is a Near‐Threatened shorebird species endemic to mainland Africa. We examined levels of genetic differentiation between its two morphologically and geographically distinct subspecies, C. p. pallidus in southern Africa (population size 11 000–16 000) and C. p. venustus in eastern Africa (population size 6500). In contrast to other plover species that maintain genetic connectivity over thousands of kilometres across continental Africa, we found profound genetic differences between remote sampling sites. Phylogenetic network analysis based on four nuclear and two mitochondrial gene regions, and population genetic structure analyses based on 11 microsatellite loci, indicated strong genetic divergence, with 2.36% mitochondrial sequence divergence between individuals sampled in Namibia (southern Africa) and those of Kenya and Tanzania (eastern Africa). This distinction between southern and eastern African populations was also supported by highly distinct genetic clusters based on microsatellite markers (global FST = 0.309,  = 0.510, D = 0.182). Behavioural factors that may promote genetic differentiation in this species include habitat specialization, monogamous mating behaviour and sedentariness. Reliance on an extremely small number of saline lakes for breeding and limited dispersal between populations are likely to promote reproductive and genetic isolation between eastern and southern Africa. We suggest that the two Chestnut‐banded Plover subspecies may warrant elevation to full species status. To assess this distinction fully, additional sample collection will be needed, with analysis of genetic and phenotypic traits from across the species’ entire breeding range.  相似文献

A chromosome survey of the black rat, Rattus rattus, was made from animals collected at different localities in Southwest and Central Asia. Asian type black rats (2 n=42) were distributed in northern India, northern Pakistan, while the Oceanian type rats (2 n=38) were found in southern India, southern Pakistan and Central Asia. A border line of distribution of rats with Asian and Oceanian types can be drawn dividing India and Pakistan into northern and southern parts. A hybrid type between Asian and Oceanian types was found in Karachi, Pakistan. Rats with 40 chromosomes, probably a transient type from Asian to Oceanian type, were found in Sri Lanka (Ceylon). It is suggested that these three geographic variants have developed via sequential events of Robertsonian fusion of acrocentric chromosomes in Asian type black rats. This fusion probably took place somewhere in southern India. The Oceanian type black rats that thus developed in southern India migrated widely to the rest of the world through Central Asia and Europe accompanying the movement of mankind.  相似文献

Cloned highly repeated DNA sequences were used to investigate the origins of W. virgo. The chromosomal and genomic organization of these sequences in the parthenogenetic grasshopper W. virgo and its sexual relatives indicate that W. virgo has had two independent origins. Data from the cloned sequences together with that from rapidly renaturing DNA are consistent with a hybridization event between two sexual species for each origin of the parthenogenetic species. Previously published data on C-banding and other karyotypic features (White and Contreras 1981) strengthen the dual origin conclusion. — The cloned DNA sequences, pWv 1 and pWv 5, have differentiated northern and southern races in the sexual species P196. The southern race appears to have hybridized with another sexual species, P169, to give rise to the Boulder/Zanthus clones of W. virgo. The northern race of P196 may have crossed with a species similar to P169 to give rise to the remaining W. virgo clones which are now present in both eastern and western Australia. White (1980) proposed that the origin of W. virgo was in western Australia and that the eastern populations were established by migration. Consistent with this hypothesis is our finding that the cloned DNA sequences have identical genomic and chromosomal organisation in populations of W. virgo in the two disjunct areas.Respectfully dedicated to Professor Wolfgang Beermann on his 60th birthday, in recognition of his great contributions to modern cytogenetics  相似文献

The perennial herb Meconopsis cambrica, a western European endemic, is the only European species of the otherwise Himalayan genus Meconopsis and has been interpreted as a Tertiary relict species. Using rbcL and ITS sequence variation, we date the split between M. cambrica and its sister clade Papaver s.str. to the Middle to Upper Miocene (12.8 Myr, 6.4–19.2 Myr HPD). Within M. cambrica, cpDNA sequence variation reveals the existence of two groups of populations with a comparable level of genetic variation: a northern group from Great Britain, the Massif Central, the western Pyrenees and the Iberian System, and a southern group from the central and eastern Pyrenees. Populations from the Cantabrian Mountains were placed in both groups. Based on ITS sequence variation, the divergence between these two groups can be dated to 1.5 Myr (0.4–2.8 Myr HPD), and the age of the British populations is estimated as 0.37 Myr (0.0–0.9 Myr HPD). Amplified fragment length polymorphism results confirm the distinctive nature of the populations from Britain, the Massif Central and the central and eastern Pyrenees. These patterns of latitudinal variation of M. cambrica differ from patterns of longitudinal differentiation found in many other temperate species and imply glacial survival of the northern populations in northerly refugia. The primary differentiation into northern and southern cpDNA groups dates to near the onset of the Quaternary and suggests that an ancient phylogeographic pattern has survived through several glacial periods. Our data provide evidence that the species has persisted for a long period with a highly fragmented and probably very localized distribution.  相似文献

Aim Climatic changes and fluctuations in the past have strongly influenced the distribution of animal and plant species. Such fluctuations are also reflected in the patterns of genetic diversity on both local and global scales. The genetic pattern of the pearly heath butterfly, Coenonympha arcania, was used to evaluate the genetic differentiation of isolated (in north‐western Europe), peripheral (in north‐eastern Europe) and central (in southern Europe) populations in the context of post‐glacial distributional changes of the species. Location Europe (Sweden, Germany, the Baltic states, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria). Thus, samples were collected from large parts of the species’ distribution representing the three categories mentioned above. Methods We analysed 18 loci of 569 individuals from 28 populations by allozyme electrophoresis. We used both individual‐based and population‐based analyses, including F‐statistics, various clustering methods and Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations. Results All loci, except Fum, were polymorphic. The mean FST for all samples was 0.18. The mean genetic distance among populations was 0.046. Two major genetic lineages were distinguished. Populations from the centre of the distributional range in southern Europe and the northern periphery of the distributional range differed significantly in their level of genetic variability. The central populations of south‐eastern Europe showed high levels of genetic diversity and no differentiation among populations. Main conclusions Most probably the two major genetic lineages evolved during glacial isolation in two disjunct Mediterranean refugia. The lack of genetic differentiation across south‐eastern Europe implies a continuous Würm ice age distribution in this area, thus supporting the functional existence of steppe forests throughout this region. The peripheral‐isolated populations in Sweden seem to have suffered from one or more severe bottlenecks, resulting in substantial genetic impoverishment. The peripheral‐connected eastern Baltic populations, on the other hand, are affected by post‐glacial and possibly recurrent gene flow from more central parts of the distribution.  相似文献
