Recently, a greatly increased number of macrofossil and pollen analytical records from Australasia and southern South America has permitted, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of past vegetation and climate change in southern temperate ecosystems. While the course of Neogene climatic change has been comparable to that of the temperate northern hemisphere, a distinctive southern hemisphere vegetation has evolved, not primarily because of its common Gondwana origin, but as a consequence of the minor amplitude of Quaternary change, absence of large ice sheets, and failure of full-glacial environments to persist through interglacials.  相似文献

A comparison of pre- and postsettlement pollen spectra from southern Alberta reveals changes in vegetation formations and vegetation composition within the region. Settlement appears to have resulted in the expansion of the Short Grass Prairie possibly due to increased grazing pressure in the Mixed Grass Prairie, whereas the Aspen Parkland has advanced southward. The response of individual types of plants to settlement was varied, but marked increases were observed in introduced plants such as Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae and Taraxacum.  相似文献

Diversity and biogeography of southern African intertidal Acari   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract Aim The aims were (1) to describe the diversity and geographical distribution of the intertidal mite fauna of southern Africa, and (2) to show how species richness, endemism and geographical patterns of this fauna (comprising taxa of variable terrestrial ancestry) compare with typically marine faunas. Location and methods To assess intertidal mite diversity and endemism, records (published and unpublished) were compiled for a variety of habitats (mainly rocky shores and mangroves), between Swakopmund (Namibia) and Inhambane (Mozambique). The geographical study was based on a dedicated sampling programme from rocky shores, at nine localities between Elandsbaai (on the west coast) and St Lucia (on the east coast). Results Eighty‐two species of marine mite, from thirty‐three genera, are currently known from southern Africa. The majority belong to the earlier marine ancestral Halacaridae (forty‐eight species), with the Ameronothroidea and Hyadesiidae collectively comprising seventeen species. In constituting three faunistic provinces, corresponding with the west (Atlantic), south and east coast (Indian) regions, the mite fauna conforms with trends for the southern African marine fauna in general. Species richness was greatest in the southern province, which deviates from the general pattern of increase from west to east, but is similar to that of some invertebrate taxonomic groups. Conclusions Despite their relatively recent marine connections, marine mites show typical geographical distributions, comparable with those of other rocky‐shore biota in southern Africa. The marine faunistic provinces are ‘insular’ and apparently remain largely intact, across taxonomic groups and with increased taxonomic resolution.  相似文献

Biodiversity and biogeography of southern temperate and polar bryozoans   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Aim To describe the distribution of biodiversity and endemism of bryozoans in southern temperate and polar waters. We hypothesized that we would find: (1) no strong latitudinal richness gradient; (2) striking contrasts in richness and endemism between clades and between regions; and (3) that faunal similarity of regions would cluster geographically around each southern continent. Location South Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and the Southern Ocean. Methods We constructed a data base from known literature, regional data bases and recent finds. We regionalized each southern continent, calculated levels of richness and endemism for each region and continent, and used primer 5 to perform multivariate statistical analysis. Results A third (1681) of global bryozoan species described occur south of 30° S, of which c. 87% were cheilostomes. In richness we found no latitudinal cline and change across longitude was stronger. New Zealand was richest and had the most (60%) endemic species, followed by Antarctica at 57%. There were striking contrasts in regional richness and endemism between clades but the highest levels of between‐region similarity were around Antarctica. The timing of past continent connectivity was reflected. Main conclusions Bryozoans show strong hemispherical asymmetry in richness and, like molluscs and corals, decrease away from Australasia rather than with latitude. Species endemism is much lower in Antarctic bryozoans than previously thought, and as this taxon is not particularly dispersive and is now amongst the best studied regionally, maybe Antarctic endemism in general is lower and Antarctica less cut‐off to species dispersal than previously thought. However, Antarctic generic endemism is double the level previously calculated and regional faunal similarities are much higher than around other continents – both reflecting long‐term isolation. Bryozoans, in contrast to the paradigm of Antarctic fauna, may be fairly robust to predicted climate change. Paradoxically, they may also be one of the best taxa to monitor to sensitively detect marine benthic responses.  相似文献

Whilst we have now a good understanding how past glaciation influenced species at the northern hemisphere, our knowledge of patterns and modes of speciation is far more limited for the southern hemisphere. We provide mtDNA based data on the phylogeography of a circumpolar distributed southern hemisphere seabird group-the southern skua complex (Catharacta spp.). Diversification of southern skuas dates between 210,000 yBP and 150,000 yBP and coincides with a glacial spanning 230,000-140,000 yBP. Skuas most likely first inhabited the Antarctic continent, in the course of global cooling and increasing glaciation spread to the sub-antarctic islands and Tristan da Cunha and finally colonized Patagonia and the Falkland Islands at the glacial maximum. Despite significant differences between taxa most populations still exchange genes with neighboring populations of other taxa and speciation is incomplete.  相似文献

An aeroallergen survey in two provinces, Chiangmai in the northern and Songkhla in the southern part of Thailand which are 1 500 km apart, was done in 1986 and 1987 using a rotorod sampler. The five most common pollen types and mold spores were: Chiangmai: Mold spores: Cladosporium, rust, Fusarium, Nigrospora, 1-celled spore. Pollen grains: Mimosa, wild grasses, Urticaceae, Cyperaceae, tetrad pollen. Songkhla: Mold spores: Cladosporium, rust, Nigrospora, Papularia, 1-celled spore. Pollen grains: Casuarina, Mimosa, Urticaceae, Cyperaceae, wild grass. There were definite differences in the amount and frequency of occurrences of aeroallergens between these two provinces. Furthermore, some specific pollen and mold spores, such as tetrads and Mimosa pollen, were found only in Chiangmai, and Casuarina pollen and Papularia spores only in Songkhla. These findings might be caused by the differences in geography, plantation and meteorological data.  相似文献

Global warming has been commonly accepted to facilitate species’ range shifts across latitudes. Cross‐latitudinal transplantations support this; many tree species can well adapt to new geographical areas. However, these studies fail to capture species’ adaptations to new light environment because the experiments were not designed to explicitly separate species’ responses to light and temperature. Here we tested reaction norms of tree seedlings in reciprocal transplantations 1,000 km apart from each other at two latitudes (60°N and 69°N). In contrast to past studies, we exposed our experimental plants to same temperature in both sites (temperature of 60°N growing site is recorded to adjust temperature of 69°N site in real time via Internet connection) while light environment (photoperiod, light quality) remained ambient. Shoot elongation and autumn coloration were studied in seedlings of two deciduous trees (Betula pendula and Sorbus aucuparia), which were expected to respond differently to day length. Sorbus as a member of Rosaceae family was assumed to be indifferent to photoperiod, while Betula responds strongly to day length. We hypothesized that (1) southern and northern populations of both species perform differently; (2) southern populations perform better in both sites; (3) autumn phenology of southern populations may delay in the northern site; (4) and Sorbus aucuparia is less dependent on light environment. According to the hypotheses, shoot elongation of northern population was inherently low in both species. An evolutionary consequence of this may be a competitive success of southern populations under warming climate. Southern population of B. pendula was delayed in autumn coloration, but not in growth cessation. Sorbus aucuparia was less responsive to light environment. The results suggest that light provides selection pressure in range shifts, but the response is species dependent.  相似文献

The subfamily Ericoideae (Ericaceae) containing the true heathers and heaths has been a group long recognized as a sound natural entity. With work on the southern African genera and species which comprise approximately 95% of the subfamily well in progress, a reassessment of the number of genera has become necessary because of the considerable variation recorded in, and the postulated polyphyletic origin of, the capsular genera. Changes envisaged will affect the whole concept of the heaths within Africa. The genus Philippia Klotzsch has been reduced to synonymy under Erica L. and it is shown that the case for a similar action is very strong for Blaeria L. and Ericinella Klotzsch. The position of the monotypic European genus, Bruckenthalia Reichb., is also affected but remains unresolved.  相似文献

The inorganic ion and organic solute composition of Tapinanthus oleifolius (Loranthaceae) and Viscum rotundifolium (Viscaceae) growing on various host trees in Namibia were investigated. Organic osmolytes accounted for 22.8–45.1% of the total solutes determined in leaves of the mistletoes parasitizing Acacia nebrownii, Catophractes alexandri, Grewia flava and Ziziphus mucronata. On other hosts (Acacia karroo, Euphorbia virosa, Salvadora persica and Tamarix usneoides) T. oleifolius showed distinct succulence with increasing leaf age, with leaves more than 3 mm thick on E. virosa. In the more succulent leaves (> 1.1 kg H2O m–2 leaf area) organic solutes were only of minor importance. Water content per leaf area was significantly correlated with chloride content per leaf area, suggesting that succulence served as a means to keep ion concentration at a physiological tolerable level. At whole plant levels 93.7% of the total sodium of the mistletoe bush was located in leaves thicker than 1 mm for T. oleifolius parasitizing Tamarix usneoides. This pronounced sequestration of sodium in older leaves as well as the high variability of the K/Na ratio in various parts of the parasite-host system point to highly selective ion distribution processes in this association.  相似文献

A total of 1 457 recoveries and controls of European Swallows Hirundo rustica in the South African Bird Ringing Unit data bank were analysed to provide an update of the apparent origins and dispersion of migrant European Swallows in southern Africa, to investigate local movements within southern Africa, and to yield an estimate of the age structure of the visiting migrants. Although birds from the former USSR and from Britain and Ireland predominate, over 200 recoveries from 20 other European countries have been recorded. More than half of the swallows migrating to southern Africa are from the central third of the species' breeding range. The dispersion of recoveries of swallows ringed in Britain and Ireland is widespread, with 55% recorded from the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. Controls of southern African-ringed swallows at roosts and recoveries elsewhere in the subcontinent suggest that the daily range of migrant swallows is encompassed within a circle of 100 km diameter, but wide-ranging intra-seasonal movements within South Africa have also been recorded. Conservative estimates of the age of European Swallows at recovery indicate that as many as 14% of migrant swallows ringed in southern Africa may Survive to more than three years of age. It is suggested that the experience of migrants that survive to return to Africa one or more times may permit some flexibility in choice of final destination and that mixing of populations in roosts may result in birds arriving at new destinations.  相似文献

Question: Can fire be used to maintain Yellow pine (Pinus subgenus Diploxylon) stands disturbed by periodic outbreaks of southern pine beetle? Location: Southern Appalachian Mountains, USA. Methods: We used LANDIS to model vegetation disturbance and succession on four grids representative of xeric landscapes in the southern Appalachians. Forest dynamics of each landscape were simulated under three disturbance scenarios: southern pine beetle, fire, and southern pine beetle and fire, as well as a no disturbance scenario. We compared trends in the abundance of pine and hardwood functional types as well as individual species. Results: Yellow pine abundance and open woodland conditions were best maintained by a combination of fire and southern pine beetle disturbance on both low elevation sites as well as mid‐elevation ridges & peaks. On mid‐elevation SE‐W facing slopes, pine woodlands were best maintained by fire alone. Conclusions: Our simulations suggest that fire can help maintain open pine woodlands in stands affected by southern pine beetle outbreaks.  相似文献

Distribution data for epidemiologically important ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Southern Province of Zambia, one of the main cattle areas of the country, are presented. Boophilus microplus (Canestrini) was not recorded in southern Zambia, whereas Boophilus decoloratus (Koch) is present throughout the area. New distribution patterns for less economically important ixodid ticks are also discussed. Southern Zambia is a transition zone because it is the most northern area in Africa where mixed Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann and Rhipicephalus zambeziensis Walker, Norval & Corwin populations were reported. Although a second generation of adult R. appendiculatus/R. zamnbeziensis was encountered, simulations indicated that this phenomenon is very rare in southern Zambia, mainly because of the colder temperatures during the early dry season and lower rainfall. These simulations were supported by a development trial under experimental conditions. Tick body size measurements showed that southern Zambian ticks are larger than eastern Zambian R. appendiculatus. It is hypothesized that body size is related to diapausing intensity in this species. The epidemiological consequences are that a different approach to control Theileria parva (Theiler) (Piroplasmida: Theileriidae) and other tick-borne diseases is needed in southern Zambia, compared to the one adopted in eastern Zambia.  相似文献

生物都有一定的适生区,低温导致其分布北界的形成是不争的事实,然而一些种类还存在分布上的南界。昆虫的生长发育与环境的关系非常密切,研究其分布南界的形成原因对预测昆虫种群的扩散和暴发具有重要意义。从环境、寄主和人类活动等方面总结了北半球昆虫分布南界形成的机制及影响因素。低纬度地区夏季高温引起昆虫死亡率上升、生殖率下降、昆虫体内共生菌解体和冬季低温过高导致昆虫滞育节律被破坏等是昆虫分布南界形成的主要原因。此外,寄主的分布和人类活动也对昆虫分布南界存在一定影响。气候变暖对不同种类昆虫的分布南界影响不同,大部分昆虫的分布范围会扩大,但一些受环境限制的昆虫分布南界往往北移。建议今后对全球气候变暖背景下昆虫分布南界的变化、检疫性害虫在其原产地和入侵地分布南界的差异及其原因进行研究,以期为分析昆虫分布的变化提供依据,也为害虫防治提供新的可能途径。  相似文献

Ionic composition of waterbodies in central and southern Nepal sampled in spring 1985 differed from that normally found in freshwater. Distinguishing characteristics were: 1) predominance of bicarbonate among the anions — accounting for > 90% of the negative equivalents in two-thirds of the waterbodies, 2) the near absence of sulfates — accounting for < 1 % of the anions in half the samples so that chloride exceeded sulfate (as meq/L) in three-fourths of the waters tested and 3) calcium was the dominant cation, although in certain waters the relative proportion of either magnesium or the monovalent cations was much higher than the world average. Regional patterns in water chemistry were apparent and are largely explained by differences in local geology, inputs from artesian wells or extensive use by humans. Most ionic salinity values were <400 mg/L. Using conventional criteria to assess trophic state, most water-bodies were eutrophic or hypereutrophic when judged by total phosphorus and chlorophyll content but as a whole the lakes sampled were low in nitrogen. Nitrogen: phosphorus ratios (generally < 10) and a significant empirical relation for chlorophyll-nitrogen provide evidence that nitrogen limited algal biomass.
