The objective of this study was to examine the role of endogenous inhibin in the regulation of FSH, LH, and testosterone secretion and sperm production in bulls. Bulls were actively immunized against bovine inhibin alpha 1-26 gly-tyr (bINH) conjugated to human alpha globulin (HAG) or HAG alone (controls) and emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant. Primary immunization was at 14 wk of age, followed by booster immunizations in Freund's incomplete adjuvant at 28, 30, and 34 wk of age. Ten days after each booster immunization, scrotal circumferences and body weights were measured, and blood was sampled for determination of bINH antibody titer. Ten days after the third booster, blood was sampled at 1-h intervals for 8 h to quantify serum concentrations of FSH, LH, and testosterone. After this blood sampling period, bulls were castrated and testicular sperm production was determined. Serum diluted 1:4,000 from bINH-immunized bulls bound 36%, 52%, and 53% of radioiodinated bINH after the first, second, and third boosters, respectively. Serum from controls bound less than 1% radioiodinated bINH. After the third booster, serum concentrations of FSH and testosterone were increased (p less than 0.05) and LH concentrations were decreased (p less than 0.001) in bINH-immunized bulls compared with controls. After the third booster, daily sperm production per gram of testicular parenchyma was increased (p less than 0.05) in bINH-immunized bulls compared with controls. Scrotal circumferences and body weights were similar between treatment groups throughout the experiment. We concluded that inhibin has a role in regulation of secretion of gonadotrophins and testosterone and testicular sperm production, but not testicular growth, in bulls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To determine the effect of neutralization of inhibin on sperm output, 12 Holstein bulls were paired by birth date and weight on Day 1 of age. Each bull was actively immunized against bovine inhibin alpha1-26 gly-tyr (bINH) conjugated to human alpha globulin (HAG, n = 6 bulls) or HAG alone (controls, n = 6) at 60 days of age; booster immunizations were administered at 90, 104, 124, 270, and 395 days of age. Body weights and scrotal circumferences were measured at the time of primary immunization and at 10 days after each booster. In addition, jugular blood was obtained at 60, 70, 100, 114, 134, 280, and 405 days of age, during the 3-wk sperm collection period, and during a 6-h blood-sampling period after sperm collection to determine bINH antibody titer and concentrations of FSH, LH, testosterone, and estradiol. Beginning at 405 days of age, sperm output was measured 3 days/wk for 3 wk with two successive ejaculates collected each day for a total of 18 ejaculates per bull. During Days 60-405 of age, the increase in titer of bINH antibodies, scrotal circumference, and serum concentration of FSH was greater (p < 0.01) for the bINH-immunized compared with control bulls. There were significant (p < 0.01) pair x treatment interactions for sperm output and serum FSH and LH concentrations. Specifically, bINH-immunized bulls for four of the six pairs had nearly 50% greater serum FSH concentrations and sperm output. For the remaining two pairs, sperm output was lower and FSH was either lower or only marginally higher in the bINH-immunized bulls compared with controls. Also, the control bulls for the two remaining pairs produced more sperm than all but one bINH-immunized bull, and had markedly higher serum LH concentrations than all other bulls. To summarize, enhancement of sperm output after immunization against inhibin depends on the subsequent increment in FSH concentrations. We conclude that inhibin suppresses spermatogenesis. Thus, methods to immunoneutralize inhibin may have merit as a therapeutic route to enhance sperm production in reproductively maturing bulls.  相似文献

Female mink were fed a basal diet supplemented with either 0, 10 100, or 1000 ppm iodine, as potassium iodide, from breeding through lactation. In addition, females were housed in pens sanitized just prior to whelping with 100 or 1000 ppm titratable iodine disinfectant to investigate the effects of these treatments on their reproductive performance. The gestation periods of the iodine-treated mink were shorter than the controls. Kit birth weights were not significantly different from the controls. The average number of kits whelped per female mated in the control group was 5.0. No detrimental effects were observed on litter size or kit survival in the group fed 10 ppm supplemental iodine. Only 2.1 kits per female mated were whelped by the mink fed 100 ppm supplemental iodine and none of the females that received the 1000 ppm supplemental iodine diet whelped. Body weights of kits whelped and nursed by the females that received the 100 ppm supplemental iodine diet were significantly lighter at 4 weeks of age. Kits nursed by females housed in pens sanitized with 100 or 1000 ppm titratable iodine had the greatest biomass at 4 weeks of age.  相似文献

Sexual maturation was evaluated in male mice subjected to prenatal and preweaning overnutrition induced by reduction of litter size in embryonic and post-natal life. From birth to adulthood body weight was higher in overfed males than in controls. Plasma and testicular testosterone levels followed a similar pattern in normally fed and overfed males. Adult gonadotrophin levels were attained at 30 (FSH) and 40 (LH) days in controls and as soon as 20 days in overfed males. First fertile matings occurred at the same age in both groups. Overnourished males attained puberty when weighing considerably more than controls (34.7 +/- 0.4 vs. 29.4 +/- 0.3 g). The 30-day-old overfed males, which have attained the critical pubertal body weight of controls, were sexually immature. The data showed that in male mice puberty does not seem to be triggered by the attainment of a critical body weight.  相似文献

One hundred fifty-two bitches of seven breeds were vaginally inseminated with fresh or frozen-thawed semen of 10 stud dogs of respective breeds. The semen was supplemented with prostatic fluid before insemination. In experiment 1 bitches of each breed were randomly assigned to three treatment groups, consisting of 29 females (group 1), 33 females (group 2) and 32 females (group 3). In group 1 bitches were inseminated into vagina with fresh semen using a bovine infusion pipette. In group 2 bitches were inseminated into vagina with fresh semen using the Osiris catheter. In group 3 bitches were inseminated with frozen-thawed semen with the Osiris catheter. The number of sperms in each insemination dose was adjusted to 300 x 10(6). In experiment two bitches were randomly assigned to two treatment groups, consisting of 30 females (group A) and 28 females (group B). In group A bitches were inseminated with fresh semen, whereas in group B with frozen-thawed semen. Osiris catheter was used in both groups. The total number of sperms was adjusted to provide 250 x 10(6) of progressively motile spermatozoa in each insemination dose. In experiment 1 the pregnancy rates/whelping rates were 86.2/82.8%, 81.8/81.8% and 59.4/59.4% for groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The differences between group 1 and 3 were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The litter sizes at birth/litter sizes at weaning were 5.8+/-2.3/5.4+/-2.0, 6.3+/-1.4/5.7+/-1.0 and 3.9+/-1.2/3.5+/-1.5 in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The litter size at birth and at weaning was reduced (p < 0.05) when frozen-thawed semen was used for insemination (group 3). There were not significant (p > 0.05) differences in the litter size between groups 1 and 2. In experiment 2 pregnancy rates/whelping rates and litter sizes at birth/litter sizes at weaning were 86.7/86.7%, 60.7/57.1% (p < 0.05) and 6.1+/-1.6/5.7+/-1.7, 4.0+/-1.4/3.8+/-1.4 (p < 0.05) in groups A and B, respectively. This study shows that results of AI with a fresh semen using a bovine infusion pipette and the Osiris catheter are equivalent. The results of the use of the Osiris catheter for vaginal insemination of frozen-thawed dog semen extended with prostatic fluid after thawing are not encouraging. The pregnancy rate, whelping rate and litter size are reduced when frozen-thawed, prostatic fluid-supplemented semen is vaginally deposited using the Osiris catheter.  相似文献

This study was comprised of three trials to determine the effects of equine chrionic gonadotrophin (eCG) on induction of sexual receptivity in female mink that had failed to mate by late in the breeding season. In the first trial one ovary was removed from unmated mink, which were then injected with 100 IU eCG. This treatment induced ovarian activity, including ovulation in the remaining ovary. In the second experiment, mink that had not been observed to mate were treated with 100 IU eCG or saline, resulting in mating of 10 11 of the eCG-treated animals, compared to 5 11 controls. Litter sizes were larger in mink in the control group, suggesting that eCG interfered with some phase of the reproductive process. In the third trial, 226 mink that had failed to mate until late in the breeding season were treated with 100 IU eCG. Of the 191 that subsequently mated, 99 produced litters, but litter sizes were reduced slightly from those observed in the remainder of the herd that bred without hormone treatment prior to March 20. Neonatal kit loss per female whelping was greater in mink treated with eCG. It is concluded that eCG treatment will induce mating in mink that refuse to mate, but this treatment results in reduced whelping success and greater neonatal kit loss. Its utility may be restricted to salvage situations where large numbers of mink fail to mate.  相似文献

During the breeding seasons of 1989 and 1990, a total of 617 blue fox vixens aged 1 to 6 years (mean +/- SEM, 2.6 +/- 0.1) were inseminated with frozen silver fox semen with either 150 million (n = 213, 1989 + 1990), 100 million (n=172, 1990), 75 million (n = 119, 1989) or 37.5 million (n = 113, 1989) spermatozoa per insemination. Two intrauterine inseminations, each with an insemination volume of 1.0 ml, were performed at 24-hour intervals on the first and second days after maximum vaginal electrical resistance was measured. Conception rates were 87% (186 of 213) with 150 million spermatozoa per insemination, 85% (146 of 172) with 100 million, 77% (91 of 119) with 75 million and 68% (77 of 113) with 37.5 million. The mean numbers of cubs per litter +/- SEM for the four groups were 7.6 +/- 0.2 (168 registered litters), 7.5 +/- 0.3 (115 litters), 6.4 +/- 0.4 (86 litters) and 6.4 +/- 0.4 (75 litters). A negative effect on both the conception rate and mean litter size at whelping was observed with decreasing sperm numbers (conception rate percentage: p = 0.0001, Chi-square, litter size: p = 0.02, Kruskal-Wallis Test). Only the two larger numbers of spermatozoa gave litter sizes comparable to those obtained by artificial insemination (AI) with fresh semen.  相似文献

A total of 36 mink dams and their litters of 3, 6 or 9 kits were used for determination of milk intake of the suckling young by means of deuterium dilution technique, and chemical composition of milk and of kit bodies. Measurements were performed during lactation weeks 1-4, each week with 3 dams with each litter size. Milk intake was determined over a 48 h measurement period, and by the end of this milk samples were collected and 2 kits (litters of 6 and 9) or 1 kit per litter (litters of 3) were killed for body chemical composition. Based on the results, different models were applied for calculation of the energetic efficiency of milk. Dam milk yield increased steadily from week 1 until week 3 but only slightly from week 3 to 4. The increase declined with increasing litter size, and for dams suckling 9 kits the increment from week 3 to week 4 was only 2 g. The dry matter content of milk increased significantly as lactation progressed, being reflected in crude protein increasing from 6.9% in lactation week 1 to 8.1% in week 4. Milk fat increased concomitantly from 5.6% to 8.0%. In kit bodies, crude protein content increased from 9.4% in week 1 to about 12% in weeks 3 and 4. Body fat content increased from week 1 (4.1%) to week 3 (8.4%) and then declined in week 4 (7.1%). Animals suckled in litters of 3 kits had the highest milk intake and live weight and kits suckled in litters of 9 had the lowest milk intake, live weight and daily gain. In terms of milk intake per g gain kits in litters of 6 were the most efficient, with 4.1 g milk per g body gain. The metabolizable energy requirement for maintenance (MEm) was estimated to 448 kJ/kg(0.75 and the efficiency of utilization of ME for body gain (kg) to 0.67, the estimates being higher (MEm) or in good agreement with previous findings (kg) in suckling mink kits.  相似文献

Fertility data from 327 artificial inseminations (AIs) using frozen-thawed dog semen are presented here. The AIs were performed in 274 bitches using semen from 185 males of 76 breeds. The data cover all AIs conducted during 1983 through 1995 at Cryogenetic Laboratories (CLONE) in the United States with AKC-registered and research bitches, and all AIs carried out at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, using semen frozen by CLONE, in 0.5-mL straws. Semen was frozen using a standardized, three-step liquid nitrogen vapor freezing method. Whelping rates > 70% were obtained when post-thaw motility was 40% or higher. The inseminations were made either directly into the uterus using transcervical catheterization with the Norwegian catheter (NIU; 167 AIs) or a fiberoptic endoscope (EIU; 19 AIs), or in the cranial vagina (VAG; 141 AIs). Resulting whelping rates were 84.4% (NIU), 58.9% (VAG; P < 0.001), and 57.9% (EIU). Increasing the number of VAG AIs per cycle from 1 to 2 enhanced the whelping rate (P < 0.05). The mean interval from the first AI to whelping was 61.8 +/- 2.4 d, and was longer for VAG AIs (62.7 +/- 2.7 d) than for NIU AIs (61.2 +/- 2.1 d; P < 0.001). The mean interval from the last AI was 60.1 +/- 1.9 d, and did not differ between VAG AIs (60.2 +/- 2.2 d) and NIU AIs (60.0 +/- 1.6 d). Gestation length was not influenced by breed or litter size. A total of 1158 pups resulted from the 327 AIs. Litter size was 5.4 +/- 3.0 (NIU), 4.0 +/- 2.7 (VAG; P < 0.001), and 6.0 +/- 2.1 (EIU). Litter size was also influenced by breed (P = 0.006) and, for VAG AIs, by the number of inseminations performed per cycle (P = 0.009). This study is the largest that has been carried out on frozen-thawed dog semen AI. It shows that using a good method for cryopreservation, together with nonsurgical intrauterine AI employing the Norwegian catheter, can yield whelping rates and litter sizes similar to those reported from well-controlled natural matings. Furthermore, this is the first study to show that intrauterine deposition of frozen-thawed dog semen results in a significantly higher whelping rate and larger litter size than vaginal deposition.  相似文献

The effect on reproduction of the plant derivative 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone (6-MBOA), which stimulates reproductive function in voles, was tested in pony mares, laboratory mice and rats, and mink. There was not a significant effect of intravenous injections of 6-MBOA on the ovarian follicles during the transition between the anovulatory and ovulatory seasons in mares. No significant effect of intraperitoneal injections of 6-MBOA on the weight of uterus or ovaries was found in eight-week-old mice, failing to confirm the results of an earlier report. In immature white rats, 6-MBOA treatment resulted in an increase in uterine weight (P<0.05) at the lowest dose tested (0.03 mug/rat; mean for controls, 34 +/-2 mg; treated, 47 +/-5 mg). However, no significant effect was found on the weights of the ovaries and other glands or in coded scores for ovarian stimulation and uterine fluid distention. Adding 1.5 mg 6-MBOA to the daily feed ration of mink beginning two weeks before the mating season did not affect the mean number of kits born. Nulliparous female mink had smaller (P<0.001) litter size than multiparous females. In addition, of the mink that whelped, there were more (P<0.01) nulliparous females (25 118 ) than multiparous females (9 144 ) that lost one or more kits within 48 hours. These results, however, were not altered by 6-MBOA treatment.  相似文献

Background

Pre-weaning diarrhea (PWD) in mink, also known as “sticky kits”, is a frequently occurring syndrome in suckling mink kits on commercial mink farms. Outbreaks of PWD result in weakened kits, increased mortality and reduced growth and welfare as well as considerable economic losses for the farmers. The syndrome is regarded as multifactorial with a complex etiology, and studies have focused on associations with environment, management and dam characteristics. The present study was conducted from May to June 2015 and included 70 dams with mink litters with and without PWD. The aims were to examine associations between PWD and mastitis (bacterial infection and histological signs of inflammation or other lesions in the mammary gland), and to examine associations between PWD and other dam-related characteristics (age, litter size, body mass index, and weight and number of active mammary glands of the dam).

Results

Using multivariable mixed logistic regression analyses with farm id as a random intercept, we found that the odds for PWD in the litter were significantly higher in 1 year old dams versus?>?1 year old (OR?=?13.3, CI 2.0–90.2, P?=?0.01), higher if litter size observed after birth was?>?5 kits versus?≤?5 kits (OR?=?16.5, CI 2.2–123.7, P?=?0.01), higher if the number of active mammary glands per kit was?≤?1.5 versus?>?1.5 glands per kit (OR?=?6.5, CI 1.2–36.0), P?=?0.03), and higher in farms with high prevalence of PWD versus low prevalence (OR?=?16.8, CI 2.9–97.6, P?=?0.002). There were no significant associations between PWD and bacterial infection, histological signs of inflammation or other lesions of the mammary gland, body mass index or weight of mammary gland per kit.

Conclusion

Pre-weaning diarrhea had a statistically significant association with age of the dam, litter size and the number of active mammary glands per kit. However, PWD was not associated with mastitis, body mass index and weight of mammary gland tissue per kit.

An experiment was performed to study the effect of the feeding program and age at first mating on body growth, feed intake, reproductive performance, and culling of rabbit does over three parities, using 155 does of a strain of New Zealand white rabbits. Three treatments were applied. Ad libitum feeding until first insemination at 14.5 wk (AL-14.5) or 17.5 wk of age (AL-17.5), and restrictive feeding from five wk of age until first insemination at 17.5 wk of age (R-17.5). At first insemination, the BW of AL-14.5 and R-17.5 was similar (3 907 vs. 3 791 +/- 46 g, respectively), whereas AL-17.5 does were heavier (4 390 +/- 46 g, P < 0.001). During reproduction, performance of AL-17.5 was not improved compared to AL-14.5 and R-17.5 does. Al-17.5 does showed a lower feed intake during the first gestation (-25%) and first parity (-10%) than R- 17.5, resulting in weight loss (-6%) during the first gestation and decreased litter weights (-19%) and litter growth (-14%) in the first parity. Extended first mating by three wk (17.5 vs. 14.5 wk) but similar BW at first mating did not affect feed intake and BW development during the first three parities. However, the number of live born kits and weight at first kindling, and litter growth in the first parity were improved in R-17.5 (+23%, +18%, and +14%, respectively). Reproductive performance can be improved by restricted feeding during rearing and extended first insemination to 17.5 wk of age. However, the culling rate was not affected by the rearing strategy.  相似文献

An experiment examined the effect of restricted feeding during early gestation on later feed intake and on kindling performance in young rabbit does. Nulliparous rabbit does (n=94) were inseminated at 14.5 weeks of age. During the first 10 days of gestation, does were fed individually either to appetite (AL) or 1.35 times maintenance requirement (R). After 10 days of gestation, all animals were fed to appetite. Does were weighed at insemination and after kindling. Feed intake was recorded during the first 10 days of gestation and weekly, thereafter. The number of does that kindled, number of live and stillborn kits and litter weight was recorded. The experiment ended after kindling. During feed restriction, AL does consumed 70 g/day more on an average than R does (209 and 139+/-4 g for AL and R, respectively; P<0.001). In the first and second week after feed restriction, compensatory feed intake occurred. Restrictive fed does ate more than AL does (+34+/-5 g/day from days 11 to 17 of gestation; P<0.001; +17+/-6g/day from days 18 to 24 of gestation; P<0.05). In the last week of gestation, feed intake of AL and R was comparable (89 and 100+/-5 g, respectively). At kindling, AL does had consumed 8+/-3g/day more feed over the total gestation period than R does (P<0.04). Feeding level during early gestation neither affected the kindling rate (83%), total litter size (7.9+/-0.4) nor the number of does with stillborn kits (10 versus 9 for AL and R, respectively). Regardless of treatment, in the last week of gestation (days 25-32) the number of does with stillbirth was lower and average birth weight was higher (P<0.01) in does eating more than the average daily feed intake compared to does eating below average. Based on the results of this study it was concluded that feed restriction for 10 days in early gestation does not affect kindling performance of young does, but feed intake in the last week of gestation affects kit survival and birth weight.  相似文献

Neotropical climbing rats (Tylomys), offspring of animals from Mexico and Panama, were maintained in the Michigan State University Museum-Live Animal Colony for the purpose of collecting data on reproduction. Vaginal smears indicated an estrous cycle 6.8 +/- 0.4 da under natural winter lighting, 12.0 +/- 2.5 da when exposed to a 12:12 light:dark cycle, and 4.3 +/- 0.3 da when utilizing an activity wheel and under a 14:10 lighting scheme. The earliest recorded mating for a female Tylomys was 90 da of age. The gestation period was 40.6 +/- 0.5 da, and there was no statistical difference between the gestation lengths of lactating and non-lactating females. The average litter size was 2.3 with a range of 1-4. Weight at birth averaged 20.2 +/- 0.3 g, or about 8% (litter about 16%) the weight of the adult. The daily instantaneous rate of growth (weight) for the first wk was about 5.6%. Graphs were presented indicating changes with time of weight, total body length, and tail, hind foot, and ear lengths. Young respond to loud noises at 6-14 da of age, and eye opening occurs slightly later, at 7-15 da of age. The young cling tenaciously to the female's nipples nearly continuously for the first 3 wk. Females did not perform any nest-building activities. Weaning occurred at approximately 3-4 wk of age.  相似文献

Aleutian disease virus (ADV) can cause pneumonitis in newborn kits up to 3 weeks old. In many cases the pneumonitis is fatal, but can be reduced by treatment with antibodies to ADV. The present report describes antibody therapy in both experimentally infected mink kits and in mink kits from a farm, where an ADV epidemic developed during the whelping period in the spring of 1987. In both cases the antibody treatment was found to have a beneficial effect on the survival rate of the mink kits. One hundred percent survival rate was found for the experimentally infected mink kits. The most pronounced effect for the naturally infected mink was found in the wildtype mink kits, where the death rate was 9.6 % for the antibody treated group versus 16.9 % for the untreated group (p < 0.001). In general the success rate of the gammaglobulin treatment seemed to correlate with the ADV-infection level in the mink sheds. The highest success rate was found in the sheds with the highest ADV-infection level (the standard and wildtype mink), while no effect whatsoever was found for the pearl mink, which were placed in a shed with a low ADV-infection level.  相似文献

Body weight of Large White gilts was greater at birth, weaning, 5 months of age and at slaughter; however, Meishan gilts reached puberty at an earlier age (91 +/- 2 vs 192 +/- 3 days, P less than 0.01), had longer periods of oestrus (60 +/- 2 vs 49 +/- 2 h, P less than 0.01) and experienced more oestrous cycles (7 +/- 0.4 vs 4 +/- 0.4, P less than 0.01) before slaughter. The interoestrous interval was longer (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts (19.8 +/- 0.2 vs 19.1 +/- 0.2 days). At slaughter, uterine length (P less than 0.05), uterine weight, width of uterine horns, endometrial surface area, endometrial weight and percentage of uterine weight represented by endometrium was greater (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts. However, breed differences were not significant when slaughter weight was included in analyses as a covariate. This indicated that development of the reproductive tract was proportionate to body weight at slaughter for each breed. When body weight at slaughter was included as a covariate, effects of day of the oestrous cycle and pregnancy on uterine width, uterine weight, endometrial surface area and endometrial weight were detected (P less than 0.01) and for uterine length there was a day-by-status interaction (P less than 0.01). Total number of CL (P less than 0.05) and total ovarian weight (P less than 0.05) were also greater for Large White gilts independent of body weight at slaughter. Inhibins and activins are firmly implicated in the control of pituitary FSH secretion and ovarian follicular development in mammals. As in mammals, inhibin A and activin A are expressed in the preovulatory follicles of birds, and a defined ovulation cycle for inhibin A has recently been demonstrated in the laying hen. To investigate further the role of inhibin-related proteins in developing pullets, circulating concentrations of inhibin A, inhibin B, total immunoreactive inhibin alpha-subunit (ir-alpha), activin A, LH, FSH, and progesterone were measured from the juvenile state through to sexual maturity in 22 birds. In the 11 birds assigned to control groups, plasma inhibin A levels were low from 7 to 13 wk of age rising about threefold to a peak at Week 19 after which levels fell slightly to a plateau level characteristic of adult hens. Plasma inhibin A levels were negatively correlated with FSH (r = -0. 33; P: < 0.001) and positively correlated with progesterone (r = 0. 67; P: < 0.001) and ir-alpha (r = 0.53; P: < 0.001). Plasma ir-alpha levels were much higher than inhibin A levels although the relative differences varied with age. Plasma levels of inhibin B and activin A were below assay detection limits at all times. The remaining group of 11 birds was actively immunized (IMM) against a synthetic chicken inhibin alpha-subunit peptide (amino acids 1-26). The IMM generated circulating antibodies that bound native bovine inhibin A but altered neither plasma FSH nor progesterone levels relative to control birds at any stage of development nor the timing of first oviposition in week 19. Apart from a transient decline 1 wk after primary IMM, plasma LH concentrations did not differ from controls. Comparison of the numbers and size-class distribution of ovarian follicles at 29 wk showed an approximate twofold increase in the number of 8- to 9.9-mm-diameter follicles (control; 1.82 +/- 0.44 vs. IMM; 3.91 +/- 0.89; P: < 0.05), a size class that corresponds to follicles that have just joined the preovulatory hierarchy. The numbers of growing follicles in other size-classes and the sizes of hierarchical F(1)-F(7) follicles were not altered by IMM. However, the number of postovulatory follicles increased (control 3.73 +/- 0. 20 vs. IMM 5.55 +/- 0.28; P: < 0.01), and significantly more (P: < 0. 02) immunized hens laid two eggs within a 24-h period on at least one occasion (control 1 of 11 vs. IMM 9 of 11). The IMM increased (P: < 0.05) activin A content of F(1) and F(2) theca layers and decreased (P: < 0.05) activin A content in F(3) and F(4) granulosa layers, raising the possibility of a local intraovarian role of activin in mediating the response to IMM. These findings support a role for inhibin A in regulating the entry of follicles into the preovulatory hierarchy in the chicken, although further studies are required to establish the mechanism by which inhibin IMM increases the rate of follicle selection and ovulation without raising plasma FSH.  相似文献

From 1994 to 2003, a total of 526 bitches of 99 different breeds were artificially inseminated in 685 estrus cycles with domestic (n = 353) or imported (n = 332) frozen-thawed semen from 368 males. The overall whelping rate was 73.1% and mean (+/- S.E.M.) litter size 5.7 +/- 0.1 pups. The whelping rate was higher after intrauterine insemination (75.0%; n = 665) than after intravaginal insemination (10.0%, n = 20; P < 0.05). Insemination at the optimal time resulted in a higher whelping rate (78%, n = 559; P < 0.01) and larger litter size (5.8 +/- 0.2; P < 0.05) than inseminations performed late or too late (55.7% and 4.5 +/- 0.5, n = 61). Two inseminations (n = 384) yielded a higher whelping rate (P < 0.05) and mean litter size (P < 0.01) than one insemination (n = 241), 78.1% and 6.0 +/- 0.2 and 70.5% and 5.1 +/- 0.2, respectively. For inseminations performed at the optimal time, however, the whelping rate was not significantly different for bitches inseminated twice (79.3%, n = 358) versus once (76.8%, n = 168), but the litter size was larger (6.0 +/- 0.2 and 5.3 +/- 0.3). Semen classified as of poor quality (progressive motility < 50% or percentage abnormal sperm > 20%) resulted in a lower whelping rate (P < 0.01) than semen classified as of good quality (progressive motility > or = 50% and percentage abnormal sperm < or = 20%), 61 and 77%, respectively. Small breeds (n = 50) had a smaller litter size (3.9 +/- 0.3; P < 0.01) than larger breeds (medium [5.7 +/- 0.3, n = 94], large [5.9 +/- 0.2, n = 295] or giant breeds [6.1 +/- 0.5, n = 62] [P < 0.01]). Bitches older than 6 years had a lower whelping rate (68.2%) than younger ones (77.0%; P < 0.05). The duration of pregnancy was longer (P < 0.01) for bitches with a litter size of < 3 pups (61.7 +/- 0. 4 days, n = 30) than for bitches with larger litters (60.5 +/- 0.1 days, n = 177). These results show the potential of transcervical intrauterine insemination for routine artificial insemination in dogs. The results with frozen semen inseminations were optimised by inseminating bitches < or = 6 years old 2 and 3 days after ovulation with semen of good quality from males < or = 8 years old.  相似文献

Growth performance and metabolism were investigated in mink kits (n = 210) exposed to the same dietary treatment as their dams (n = 30), i.e. high (HP; 61% of metabolisable energy, ME), medium (MP; 48% of ME) or low (LP; 30% of ME) protein supply, from birth until 10 weeks of age. The kits were weighed weekly, and were measured by means of balance experiment and indirect calorimetry, in weeks eight and nine post-partum (p.p.). At weaning (seven weeks p.p.) and 10 weeks p.p. one kit per litter was killed and blood, liver and kidneys were collected. Plasma amino acid profiles, and hepatic abundance of mRNA for phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), fructose 1,6-biphosphatase, pyruvate kinase and glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase) by q-PCR, were determined. There were no differences in live weights among kits the first four weeks of life when kits solely consumed milk, but male LP kits were the heaviest. After transition to solid feed MP kits weighed most at nine weeks of age (p < 0.05). At eight weeks of age, the kits fed the LP diet retained less (p < 0.05) N than HP and MP kits. Heat production did not differ among kits, although protein oxidation was higher (p < 0.001) in HP kits than in LP kits. Kits fed the LP diet had lower (p < 0.05) plasma concentrations of lysine, methionine and leucine than MP kits. Dietary treatment was not reflected in the relative abundance of any of the studied mRNAs, but kits had significantly lower abundance of all studied mRNA than their dams, ranging from 83% less PEPCK abundance to 40% less for G-6-Pase. The kidney mass was smallest (p < 0.01) in kits fed the LP diet, and liver masses were largest (p < 0.001) in HP kits. The results indicate that the LP diet did not meet the protein requirements for mink kits in the transition period from milk to solid feed. The capacity to regulate the rate of gluconeogenesis was even more limited in young mink kits than in adult dams. However, young mink kits can regulate protein oxidation in response to dietary protein supply, probably by adapting the size of the liver and kidneys to the level of protein supply.  相似文献

Daily (24 h) milk intake and body water turnover were measured in eight litters of suckling mink (Mustela vison) kits (6–9 kits litter−1) during weeks 1–4 post partum using the tritiated water (3HHO) dilution technique. The biological half-life of body water turnover in the mink kits increased linearly from 0.9 days in week 1 (3–5 days post partum) to 1.9 days in week 4 (22–24 days post partum). The daily milk intake varied markedly among the mink kits within a litter and increased significantly with increasing body mass from (mean±SEM) 10.9±0.4 g per kit during week 1 to 27.7±1.0 g per kit during week 4. Throughout the study, male kits were ∼10% heavier and had a significantly higher milk intake than female kits. The results were corrected for water recycling between the dam and her kits, ranging from ∼4 to 15% of the daily milk water intake, and the calculated daily milk yield of the 2 year old lactating mink dams increased from 87±7 g day−1 in week 1 to 190±15 g day−1 in week 4 post partum. The average body growth rate of the mink kits ranged from 2.9 g kit−1 per day in week 1 to 5.4 g kit−1 per day in week 4, and the calculated mean intake of mink milk per unit of body weight gain was remarkably stable at 4.0 (g g−1) during weeks 1–3 post partum, but increased to 5.6 (g g−1) in week 4 post partum. The amount of metabolizable energy supplied to the kits by the daily milk yield of the dam increased from ≈450 to ≈990 kJ day−1, which corresponded well with the calculated daily energy requirements of the kits. The tritiated water dilution technique was found feasible and reliable for repeated measurements of milk intake in suckling mink kits up to 4 weeks of age.  相似文献
