The life history and ecology of three polydesmoid millipedes of the family Paradoxosomatidae in Zaria, Nigeria are described. The species are surface dwellers and feed on soil: cryptogams are probably important in the diet. The function of the swarming behaviour which characterizes most larval stadia of these species is discussed.
Habrodesmus duboscqui completes its life cycle in one or two years, most Xanthodesmus sp. and Xanthodesmus physkon in one year. The adults are relatively short lived in all three species and die before the onset of the dry season. The species survive the dry season as diapausing larvae in the soil and the moulting chamber is probably important in water conservation.  相似文献

Plasticity is a crucial component of the life cycle of invertebrates that live as active adults throughout wet and dry seasons in the tropics. Such plasticity is seen in the numerous species of Bicyclus butterflies in Africa which exhibit seasonal polyphenism with sequential generations of adults with one or other of two alternative phenotypes. These differ not only in wing pattern but in many other traits. This divergence across a broad complex of traits is associated with survival and reproduction either in a wet season that is favourable in terms of resources, or mainly in a dry season that is more stressful. This phenomenon has led us to examine the bases of the developmental plasticity in a model species, B. anynana, and also the evolution of key adult life history traits, including starvation resistance and longevity. We now understand something about the processes that generate variation in the phenotype, and also about the ecological context of responses to environmental stress. The responses clearly involve a mix of developmental plasticity as cued by different environments in pre-adult development, and the acclimation of life history traits in adults to their prevailing environment.  相似文献

The life cycle of Laodicea indica is described. In the Bismarck Sea this species shows a normal alternation of generations in the wet season; but in the dry season the cycle is contracted, and planulae give rise to gonothecae without formation of a hydroid colony. Medusae are liberated about 3 d after planula settlement. This life cycle pattern is previously unreported in hydromedusae. The possible adaptive value of such a life cycle and the evolution of polyp reduction in hydromedusan life cycles are discussed.  相似文献

Observations on populations of Rhysida nuda togoensis and Ethmostigmus trigonopodus in Zaria, Nigeria, show that growth rates are very rapid and life cycles shorter than in centipedes from temperate regions. R. nuda togoensis reproduces when one year old and, in all probability, E. trigonopodus does so as well.
It is suggested that both species are enabled to continue feeding in damp areas after the rains have ended by virtue of their mobility and large size (with consequent greater resistance to desiccation). Increasing aridity drives them into crevices in the soil where a relatively rich fauna may persist through the dry season. The young appear at the beginning of the rains, thereby having the entire rainy season available for feeding.
The taxonomy of R. nuda togoensis is discussed and the distribution of both species in Nigeria is described. They are virtually absent from the dry sudan savanna vegetation belt.  相似文献

In temperate forests, juvenile trees anticipate leaf phenology compared to adults, thus avoiding shading and herbivory. This is also expected to occur in seasonal tropical forests due to intense herbivory and shading during the rainy season; however, the anticipation of leaf phenology by juveniles in seasonal tropical forests has yet to be demonstrated. Stem‐succulent species are expected to be prone to juvenile phenological anticipation because these species are able to use water stored in their stems for leaf flushing in the dry season. We investigated this hypothesis by comparing leaf phenology (bud break, leaf expansion) of juveniles and adults of two species with contrasting wood densities in the transition between dry and rainy seasons in a tropical dry woodland. We also investigated the level of light limitation that juveniles experience in the rainy season. Both species exhibited bud break during the dry season, but only expanded their leaves with the occurrence of the first rains. In general, the stem‐succulent species had a more precocious bud break; however, anticipation by juveniles occurred only in the species with more dense wood. Canopy openness was lower than in temperate deciduous forests, but the fact that the full expansion of leaves occurred only with rainfall indicates that bud break in anticipation of canopy closure contributes only to keeping leaf photosynthetic balance from going negative, and not to higher carbon gain. The importance of anticipated budding for escaping herbivory remains an alternative explanation in need of investigation.  相似文献

于2000年丰、枯水期对契爷石水库的理化因子,浮游生物种类组成,细胞密度等进行了调查研究,并利用有关评价指数对该水库水体的营养水平进行了评价。结果表明,契爷石水库目前已进入富营养化状态,且枯水期较丰水期富营养化程度更为严重,另外,全年有机污染也比较严重。浮游植物丰水期以蓝藻、绿藻为主,枯水期以蓝藻、硅藻为主,该水库属于典型的蓝藻-绿藻-硅藻型水库,且有较高丰度的耐有机污染的裸藻所在。浮游动物以轮虫和桡足类为主,轮虫主要以耐有机、喜富营养的萼花臂尾轮虫(Rrachionus calyciflorus)、前节晶囊轮虫(Asplanchna priodonta)、螺形龟甲轮虫(Keratella cochearis)为主,挠足类主要以无节幼体,桡足幼体为主,成体很少,且主要以剑水蚤为主,喜寡营养的哲水蚤在该水库中没有出现,枝角类种类,数量都很少,多为广温型、嗜暖型种类,其中长额象鼻蚤(Bosmina longirostris)和微型裸腹蚤(Moina micrura)习居于富营养型水体中。  相似文献

In carabid beetles, physiological and behavioural characteristics reflect specific habitat demands and there is a strong correlation between body form and habit in species with different life style. In this study, we compared the morphometry and compound eye characteristics of three species of the genus Siagona: Siagona jenissoni, Siagona dejeani and Siagona europaea. These carabids have a stenotopic lifestyle in Mediterranean clayey soils, inhabiting the ground fissure system formed during the dry season. All species have a Mediterranean distribution and are nocturnal olfactory hunters, and are strict ant predators. For morphometric measurements, we considered body length (mm), wing length (mm), antenna length (mm), head width (mm), trochanter length (mm), number of ommatidia, eye surface area (mm2), ommatidia density (number of ommatidia/mm2 of eye surface area), head height (mm), thorax height (mm) and abdomen height (mm). The data revealed intersexual and interspecific differences. The three species differ in relative length of the antennae, density and number of ommatidia and relative trochanter length. Significant differences occurred in wing sizes, which are well developed in Siagona europaea, the only species capable of flight. When eye size is compared with other ground beetles of various lifestyles, Siagona shows pronounced "microphthalmy" an adaptation to subterranean life in clayey crevices of tropical and subtropical climates with a marked dry season.  相似文献

Shade-tolerant understory shrubs and subcanopy trees constitute most of the woody species in Neotropical moist forest, but studies demonstrating physiological differences among these species are few. Shade-tolerant species that coexist in the forest understory exhibit differences in leaf life span that have been associated with variation in physiological traits. We hypothesized that water relations of understory species with widely divergent leaf life spans differ in response to drought. Although severe drought is infrequent in Neotropical moist forest, we studied the water relations of shade-tolerant understory species with short or long leaf life spans during the severe 1991-1992 dry season on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. The predawn leaf water potential declined to -2.8 and -3.6 MPa during the dry season in Hybanthus prunifolius and Psychotria horizontalis, respectively, two species with short leaf life spans, but remained above -1.3 MPa in two species with long leaf life spans, Swartzia simplex and Ouratea lucens. The midday leaf water potential dropped as low as -3.4 and -4.5 MPa for H. prunifolius and P. horizontalis, respectively. The osmotic potential of H. prunifolius and P. horizontalis and another species with short leaf life span, Alms blackiana, decreased early in the dry season, a period during which all three had substantially negative predawn water potential. In contrast, the osmotic potential of S. Simplex, O. lucens, and Licania platypus, a third species with long leaf life span, declined late in the dry season, even though we observed little change in predawn water potential for S. simplex and O. lucens. We conclude that the variable and potentially severe dry season in Neotropical moist forest can be sufficiently intense to severely limit soil moisture availability for understory plants. H. prunifolius and P. horizontalis tolerated dehydration, whereas S. simplex and O. lucens postponed dehydration.  相似文献

Based on samples collected in 1989–90, I report on several aspects of the natural history of species of small mammals from seasonal montane areas in subtropical central Taiwan, including their reproduction, demography, sex ratio and body size. The climatic seasonality in the areas is striking. The wet season lasts from May through September and the dry season from October through April. The phenology of plant life is related to this seasonality: vegetative growth occurs primarily in the wet season, but fruit and seed production is concentrated in the dry season. Variation in the reproduction and demography are analysed between the wet and the dry season for six species, Apodemus semotus, Niviventer culturatus. Eothenomys melanogaster, Microtus Kikuchii, Anourosorex syuamipes and Soriculus fumidus . Two murid rodents. A semotus and N. culturatus. are capable of breeding year-round, whereas the microtine rodents, E. melanogaster and M. Kikuchii , have discrete breeding seasons. The shrews, A. squamipes and S. fumidus are both seasonal breeders. but they differ in the timing of their breeding cycles. While S. fumidus breeds primarily in the late dry season, A. syuamipes reproduces in the wet season. Finally, seasonal variation in reproduction is discussed in relation to phylogenetic and physio-ecological characteristics of these six species.  相似文献

In a field survey performed in a malaria-endemic region of Northern Amazon, Brazil, we encountered ciliate protozoa of the family Tetrahymenidae infecting adults and larvae of the following mosquito species: Culex sp., Anopheles albitarsis l.s., Anopheles strodei, Anopheles mattogrossensis, Anopheles darlingi, and Anopheles oswaldoi l.s. Based on morphological features and life style, we have tentatively identified the parasite as Lambornella sp. The association appears pathogenic for the mosquito. Prevalence of infection in both larvae and adults was higher in the dry season.  相似文献

Abstract:  This paper presents the results of a study on the diet of Zonocerus variegatus in cassava agro-ecosystems at Allada, south Benin. The diet was determined by the analysis of plant fragments in the faeces of insects sampled in the fields. The grasshoppers studied consumed 21 plant species among the 81 found in the fields. Cassava, maize, Mallotus oppositifolius and Chromolaena odorata were the major food plants for Z. variegatus in this system. The presence of Z. variegatus in different fields was observed depending on the season and the presence of certain plant species. There was no relationship between plant frequency in the diet and in the field. Cassava was the preferred food resource for mature nymphs and adults. During the dry season, young nymphs stayed near the hatching sites and where good food resources were available. At this time, the grasshoppers were present in a field where cassava was not abundant but where maize and weeds were available. During the dry season, Z. variegatus had a broader diet than during the wet season. This contradicts the current hypothesis that the water content of plants and the floral diversity determines food preference. The dry season is also the time when C. odorata leaves were found in the faeces of both adults and nymphs. These observations made in West Africa are similar to those made in Central Africa, particularly for the number of plant species found in the faeces, 21 (26% of all plant species found in the fields) in Bénin and 17 (23%) in the Congo. The increase of the sample size and the great differences between the ecoregional situation of the study sites do not substantially change the number of plant species included in the diets. In the area covered by this study, C. odorata is not the major substitute for cassava during the dry season, although it remains a major food source and an especially visible food resource.  相似文献

The life cycles of many African species of tiger beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) exhibit pronounced seasonality, with adult emergence and reproductive activity closely associated with seasonal rains. Anecdotal reports have suggested that adults of certain riverine tiger beetle species may be active during the dry season near perennial water sources. To test this hypothesis, fifteen sites along three perennial rivers in Kruger National Park, South Africa, were surveyed for tiger beetles in early September, 2006. Thirteen sites yielded adult beetles, with six species represented [ Chaetodera regalis (Dejean), Cylindera disjuncta (Dejean), Habrodera nilotica (Dejean), Lophyra neglecta intermediola (Horn), Lophyridia fimbriata imperatrix (Srnka), and Myriochile melancholica (Fabricius)]. Microhabitat associations of adults of all six species and ovipositional/larval substrates of five of the six species are reported, along with observations on predatory and reproductive behaviours and the possible presence of an anti-predator chemical defence in C. regalis and L. fimbriata imperatrix .  相似文献

The larva, pupa, male and female of Simulium tergospinosum n. sp. are described and illustrated. The adults of this new species share many characters with species in the subgenus Psaroniocompsa, where it is placed. The larva of this species bears dorsal and lateral triangular tubercles on the abdomen and multiply branched scale-like setae on the body, suggesting that it belongs to the S. siolii species group. S. tergospinosum n.sp. was collected along the Juma River, Apuí county, in the southern part of the State of Amazonas, Brazil. The Juma, a black-water river, is a tributary of the Aripuan? River in the Madeira River hydrographic basin, on the southern part of Amazonas. Females were collected biting humans along the water courses during the sampling period (in the dry season).  相似文献

The southern velvet shrimp, Metapenaeopsis palmensis, a small, tropical r-strategist shrimp, was investigated to test whether its life history tactics are similar to those of penaeid shrimps. In total, 7,832 shrimps were collected in southwestern Taiwan from April 2002 to August 2011. For the first time, we have identified the shrimp as a multiple spawner. This species has a size-segregated distribution, with the newly recruited early juveniles [<6.00 mm carapace length (CL)] living offshore (water depth = 30 m) and the subadults and mature spawning adults (CL ≥9.39 mm) living inshore (water depth = 15–20 m). They spawn from February to June before the rainy season when the water temperature exceeds 25°C. Only the larvae hatched in the late spawning season will successfully recruit in the dry season in September–November when the bottom water salinity is higher than 33.5 psu. The life history tactics of this species are different from those found by various previous studies on penaeid shrimps.  相似文献

Starvation resistance is an important trait related to survival in many species and often involves dramatic changes in physiology and homeostasis. The tropical African butterfly Bicyclus anynana lives in two seasonal environments and has evolved phenotypic plasticity. The contrasting demands of the favourable, wet season and the harsh, dry season have shaped a remarkable life history, which makes this species particularly interesting for investigating the relationship between starvation resistance, metabolism, and its environmental modulation. This study reports on two laboratory experiments to investigate the effects of pre-adult and adult temperatures that mimic the seasonal environments, on starvation resistance and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in adult B. anynana. In addition, we investigate starvation resistance in wet and dry seasonal form genotypes; artificial selection on eyespot size has yielded lines that only produce one or the other of the seasonal forms across all rearing environments. As expected, the results show a large effect of adult temperature. More relevant, we show here that both pre-adult temperature and genetic background also influence adult starvation resistance, showing that phenotypic plasticity in this species includes starvation resistance. The dry season form genotype has a higher starvation resistance when developed at dry season temperatures, indicating a genetic modulation of starvation resistance in relation to temperature. Paradoxically, dry season pre-adult temperatures reduce starvation resistance and raise RMR. The high overall association of RMR and starvation resistance in our experiments suggests that energy expenditure and survival are linked, but that they may counteract each other in their influence on fitness in the dry season. We hypothesize that metabolism is moderating a trade-off between pre-adult (larval) survival and adult survival in the dry season.  相似文献

In agreement with the Broecker and Penn two-boxes model, I generated a biogeochemical balance model for the Gulf of Nicoya (Guanacaste, Costa Rica) using two nutrient reservoirs: surface water and deep water. The mixing zone was located at a depth of 20 m. There is a balance between surface waters descending to the bottom and upwelling waters that carry nutrients and other chemical elements to the surface. The main source of nitrogen (nitrate), was the outlet of the Tempisque and Tárcoles rivers. The Gulf of Nicoya is a net source of Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) with an availability rate of 87 x 10(3) mol day(-1) in the dry season and 3044 x 10(3) mol day(-1)in the rainy season. Dissolved Inorganic Phosphate (DIP) was estimated in 27 mol day(-1) in the dry season and 207 mol day(-1) in the rainy season. The dynamics of these biolimited nutrients, in relation to runoff seasonal variations, fits the biological processes reported for the gulf, for example, for variations in primary productivity levels, and maturity and reproduction seasons for species with short and long life cycles.  相似文献

In tropical dry forests most plants are deciduous during the dry season and flush leaves with the onset of the rains. In Costa Rica, the only species displaying the opposite pattern is Bonellia nervosa. To determine if seasonal changes in light availability are associated with the leaf and reproductive phenology of this species, we monitored leaf production, survival, and life span, as well as flower and fruit production from April 2000 to October 2001 in Santa Rosa National Park. Leaf flushing and flower bud production took place shortly after the autumnal equinox when day length starts to decrease. Leaves began expansion at the end of the wet season, and plants reached 70 % of their maximum leaf area at the beginning of the dry season, maintaining their foliage throughout the entire dry period. Leaf shedding occurred gradually during the first three months of the wet season. Leaf flushing and shedding showed high synchrony, with leaf numbers being related to light availability. Maximum leaf production coincided with peaks in radiation during the middle of the dry season. Decreasing day length induces highly synchronous flower bud emergence in dry forest species, but this is the first study indicating induction of leaf flushing by declining day length.  相似文献

Abstract. As part of a wider study examining regeneration pathways in monsoon rain forest vegetation in northern Australia, a one-off, dry season census of saplings was undertaken along transects sampled at each of 33 relatively undisturbed sites broadly representative of the range of regional monsoon rain forest vegetation. Four floristic quadrat groups were derived through TWINSPAN classification. Subsequent analyses involved: (1) comparison of mean dry season stockings of juveniles occurring in different rain forest types, and their structural and environmental correlates; (2) comparison of the contributions of different life forms, and the influence of clonal reproduction in the sapling regeneration banks of different forest types; and (3) exploration of relationships between the distributions of saplings of common tree species with respect to seed bank, floristic, structural, and environmental variables. While data presented here require cautious interpretation given that processes of seedling/sapling recruitment and mortality are highly dynamic, sapling banks were found to be most dense on coarse-textured, moist soils, and least dense on coarse-textured, seasonally dry soils. Canopy cover and fire impact were shown to be highly influential on sapling distribution, especially for saplings of tree species and those growing on seasonally dry sites. Sapling densities were little influenced by proximity to rain forest margins, except for shrubs. The potential for clonal reproduction was significantly greater on dry sites, especially for trees. The majority of saplings sampled were derived from relatively few common, non-clonal, canopy tree species. Sapling distributions of 20 out of 23 common tree species were clumped in the vicinity of conspecific adults; for most species the strength of this relationship was greater than that for any other variable. These data support observations in the literature concerning the distribution of sapling banks in moist and dry tropical forests.  相似文献

This study investigated composition and selectivity in diet for waterbuck in the Pendjari National Park in north-western Benin, through the use of micrographic analysis of faecal samples. Three plant species ( Panicum anabaptistum, Echinochloa stagnina and Andropogon gayanus ) were regularly consumed all year round. Meanwhile, three other species (i.e., Hyparrhenia involucrata, Acroceras amplectens and Oryza barthii ) are mostly found in its diet during the beginning of the rainy season. During the dry season, long life grasses (>40%) and tree forage (about 35%) were the most dominant life form in the diet. On the contrary at the beginning of the rainy season, annual species (> 50%) were dominant. In conclusion, the waterbuck has a grazer regime when plant species are abundant and a mixed diet during the dry season. Waterbuck's food niche breath, defined by Hespenheide [ Ecology and Evolution of communities . Harvard Univ. Press, 1975], was lower than 1, implying this antelope does not eat all food categories in a proportional way. Shannon diversity index showed that the diet was more diversified during the rainy season and less diversified at the end of the dry season. Based on [ Ecology , 64 (1983), 1297] diet selectivity index, waterbuck exerted a positive selection on the major graminaceous species.  相似文献

The breeding season on the Santa Elena peninsula in S.W. Ecuador is described on the basis of 1761 nests found in the four years 1955 to 1958. The environment and climate are outlined—a cool, dry season from about May to November and a warm, variable wet season from December to April, when alone rain may fall. It is shown that each year the general breeding season is closely correlated with the rainfall. The peak of breeding varies from year to year by at least a month and its length from about six weeks to three and a half months.
Although all species for which there are enough data, are stimulated to breed after important falls of rain, most of those species of small land-birds which are completely resident, attempt to nest before the rain and often continue for some time afterwards. Some specific differences, between seed- and insect-eating finches, seem to be adaptations to food supply and the availability of nest sites and building material. Such evidence as there is suggests that raptors, waders and waterfowl also nest in the wet season (often late), rather than in the dry season. (Unfortunately herons and sea-birds do not nest in the area.)
Annual differences in the amount of breeding by the same species are thought not to be entirely due to differences in weather between years.
It is suggested that the late (August-September) breeding in the Galápagos Islands described by Lack (1950) and the apparent dry-season nesting of raptors, waders and waterfowl there might be found to be linked with variable or abnormally wet weather, if records of rainfall from the islands were available.  相似文献
