A total of 1,115 longnose dace, Rhinichthys cataractae (family Cyprinidae), were examined for parasites from May 1983 through October 1986 from 3 localities in the Ford River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Thirteen parasite species (1 Monogenea, 2 Digenea, 2 Cestoda, 4 Nematoda, 1 Acanthocephala, 3 Protozoa) infected dace. The parasite faunas of dace, taxonomically and in species number, were similar between localities. Posthodiplostomum minimum minimum, Neascus sp., and Rhabdochona canadensis were the most common helminths infecting dace from each locality. The first 2 species did not exhibit consistent seasonal infection patterns between years, whereas the prevalence and mean intensity of R. canadensis in dace from the downriver locality were higher in summer 1983, 1984, and 1985. The intensity of infection of each of these helminth species significantly increased with host length. The prevalences and mean intensities of P. m. minimum, Neascus sp., and R. canadensis as well as the helminth infracommunity diversity were highest in dace from the upriver locality. The major factors that influenced parasite intensity were environmental factors that occurred when and where a fish began its life, the sequence of events that occurred in each habitat the fish encountered during its life, and the length of exposure (age of fish). Dace have isolationist helminth infracommunities arising from factors including ectothermy, a simple enteric system, restricted vagility, and being gape-limited. Allogenic helminths with indirect life cycles predominate in the depauperate helminth fauna of dace.  相似文献

An engraved fish that can be attributed to the final Magdalenian period was discovered in 2010 in the Margot cave (Thorigné-en-Charnie, Mayenne, France). It shows graphic details that allow us to propose some clues to taxonomic determination. It must be a freshwater fish; the hypothesis of a Cyprinidae such as a tench is acceptable, considering that the 3.1 layer of the nearby Rochefort cave, attributable to the Final Paleolithic, has yielded a branchial arch of another Cyprinidae (probably a chub or a dace). Fish is not a usual theme in Paleolithic wall art. Here it is associated with another engraved animal figure, which is not fully determinable (seal or other fish).  相似文献

Synopsis We analyzed temporal changes in the dispersion of the rosyside dace,Clinostomus funduloides, (family Cyprinidae) in a headwater stream, to assess the role of habitat availability in promoting fish aggregation. The dace foraged alone and in groups of up to about 25 individuals, and dispersion varied significantly among monthly censuses conducted from May through December. In two of three study pools, dace aggregated during July, October and/or December, but spread out during other months, especially during September when dispersion did not differ significantly from random. Dispersion was not significantly correlated with the total amount of suitable habitat available to foraging dace, but during summer, corresponded to the availability of depositional areas adjacent to rapid currents. Foragers aggregated in eddies or depositional areas during high stream discharge in July, and shifted out of depositional areas when current velocities declined from July to September. During late autumn, however, aggregations formed independently of changes in habitat conditions, and dace dispersion did not vary significantly among months in a third pool. The study suggests that dace dispersion cannot be predicted from the overall availability of suitable habitat as estimated from point measurements of depth and velocity; both the occurrence of a specific habitat feature (i.e., eddies adjacent to high velocity currents) and seasonal differences in behavior more strongly influenced the spatial distribution of foragers.  相似文献

Juvenile largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ) undergo an ontogenetic niche shift from invertebrate feeding members of the cyprinid prey guild to piscivory during their first year of growth. We conducted laboratory and field trials to determine whether juvenile bass show a similar ontogenetic shift in their response to the alarm pheromone of finescale dace ( Phoxinus neogaeus , Cyprinidae). When exposed to dace skin extract (with alarm pheromone), juvenile bass exhibited a significant positive relationship between standard length and horizontal and vertical area use and time spent moving. Small bass (< 50 mm standard length) tended to reduce area use and time spent moving (indicative of an anti-predator response), while larger bass (> 50 mm standard length) increased area use and time spent moving (indicating a foraging response). Bass exhibited no change in behaviour when exposed to swordtail ( Xiphophorus helleri ) skin extract, which lacks Ostariophysan alarm pheromone. During field trials, small (30–45 mm standard length) and medium (46–60 mm standard length) bass actively avoided areas labelled with dace alarm pheromone and exhibited a significant increase in dashing behaviour. Large bass (61–80 mm standard length) were attracted to such areas and exhibited a significant increase in approach behaviour. These data suggest that largemouth bass undergo an ontogenetic shift in response to heterospecific chemical alarm signals.  相似文献

Redside dace Clinostomus elongatus (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) is a species of conservation concern that is declining throughout its range as a result of habitat fragmentation, degradation and loss. We characterized the genetic structure and diversity of redside dace populations across the species range using mitochondrial and microsatellite data to inform conservation efforts and assess how historical and recent events have shaped genetic structure and diversity within and among populations. Phylogeographic structure among 28 redside dace populations throughout southern Ontario (Canada) and the United States was assessed by sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome b and ATPase 6 and 8 genes. Populations were also genotyped using ten microsatellite loci to examine genetic diversity within and among populations as well as contemporary spatial structuring. Mitochondrial DNA sequence data revealed three geographically distinct lineages, which were highly concordant with groupings identified by microsatellite analysis. The combined genetic data refute published glacial refugia hypotheses of a single Mississippian refugium or of two lineages associated with Mississippian and Atlantic refugia. Secondary contact between the two eastern groups was documented in the Allegheny River drainage and tributaries to Lake Ontario. With the exception of several allopatric populations within the Allegheny watershed, high genetic structuring among populations suggests their isolation, indicating that recovery efforts should be population-based.  相似文献

The relict dace (Relictus solitarius) is an endemic minnow restricted to isolated spring systems within Butte, Goshute, Ruby and Steptoe valleys in the eastern Nevada portion of the Great Basin. It is the only native fish in these basins, but speckled dace (Rhinichthys osculus) have been introduced into some localities in Ruby Valley and, based on morphology, the two species are believed to have hybridized in those areas. We used DNA sequence data from one mitochondrial gene (cytochrome b) and one nuclear intron (S7) to determine if putative relict dace populations in Ruby Valley share mtDNA haplotypes with speckled dace, or show signs of hybridization. Results of our analyses show that 11 of 16 Ruby Valley populations sampled contain only speckled dace, and one speckled dace population exhibited signs of limited introgressive hybridization. The remaining five Ruby Valley populations that were sampled contain relict dace that remain genetically distinct from speckled dace. The integrity of the Ruby Valley relict dace populations should be actively protected, particularly in the area surrounding Ruby Lake where speckled dace have been widely introduced.  相似文献

Ecological characteristics of Japanese dace Tribolodon hakonensis were investigated in three small streams in Niigata Prefecture from 2001 to 2005 with special reference to the effect of Ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis on the dace. Japanese dace were distributed in short sections below dams near the mouth of the streams flowing into the Sea of Japan. In this section, Ayu were numerically dominant from June to August, and the growth rate of dace in this period was negatively correlated with the density of Ayu. The population density of dace was high in October, but some adults stayed in the streams in June and August. When data for the five years were combined, the density of dace was negatively correlated with that of Ayu in two of the three streams. The increase in density of dace in October is considered to be due to the migration of dace from the sea. Eight dace were confirmed to migrate to different streams via the sea. Therefore, the life history of Japanese dace in the study region contained considerable individual variation.  相似文献

Scales of 497 dace from the river Stour and 573 from the river Frome were used for age determinations. Annuli were laid down in late May to early June at the start of the growth period. Minimal growth occurred from November to April. Male dace grew minimally faster than females; Frome dace faster than those from the Stour. Growth rates in the two rivers were similar to those published for most other European waters. Variation in growth rates in different years was not great, but there were marked differences in recruitment success. Spawning occurred in the second half of March and elaboration of the gonads between September and March. Immature dace have an annual cycle in condition with a maximum in June and a minimum during the winter months. The condition of the mature females is affected by the gonad cycle. The fecundity of Stour dace is represented by the formula:

Most dace were mature by age IV, but there were more mature II and III group fish in the Frome population. Molluscs and Trichoptera larvae comprised the bulk of the winter diet of Stour dace, and Ephemeroptera nymphs, Simulium and chironomid larvae were the principal constituents during the summer.  相似文献

In fish of the family Cyprinidae extensive polymorphism and heterogeneity of serum transferrins were found. Ten variants of transferrins were detected in barbel, 9 in dace and bleak, 7 in chub and bream, 6 in rudd, 5 in roach, white bream, silver carp, big head and crucian carp, 3 in tench, and 2 variants in nase, ide and goldfish. All the variants observed bound radioactive iron. The phenotype patterns indicated a simple genetic determination, by a set of codominant alleles at one locus, and this even in tetraploid species. Transferrins of some species were partly isolated. The transferrins of all 22 species analysed were heterogeneous and homozygous pheno-types had 1 to 6 zones of various intensities, binding 59Fe. In barbel both single-zone and two-zone variants were present and transferrins of roach had variable heterogeneity. Sialic acid was found only in transferrins of silver carp, big head and in the two-zone variants of barbel. The occurrence of phenotypes with single and double zones of transferrins in barbel indicates the possibility of genetic determination of the inability of single-zone variants to bind sialic acid.  相似文献

To analyze density-mediated indirect effects through trophic cascades caused by Japanese dace Tribolodon hakonensis on the algal biomass and growth of ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis, (freshwater fish belonging to Salmoniformes), I introduced zero, five, ten, and 20 dace with and without ayu into experimental pools. Ayu fed predominantly on benthic algae, whereas dace fed on both invertebrates and algae. The percentage of algae in the food content of dace was correlated with the number of dace in a pool. In the experiment lasting 8 days, trophic cascades on algae were not clear. In contrast, when the experimental duration was extended to 20 days, the number of gastropods and ephemeropteran nymphs was negatively correlated with the number of dace, consequently increasing the algal biomass and ayu growth through trophic cascades. Compared with pools with five dace, the presence of ten and 20 dace had similar gross effects on the number of algivorous invertebrates and algal biomass and greater gross effects on the ayu growth. The significant increase in ayu growth in pools with ten and 20 dace strongly suggests that small positive effects on algal growth by dace accumulated and extended to ayu during a 20-day experimental period. These results indicate the importance of analyzing interactions between the density and behavior of the top predator and the experimental duration on the intensity of trophic cascades.  相似文献

The Nooksack dace (Pisces: an undescribed putative taxon within Rhinichthys) and longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae) are two forms within the R. cataractae species complex that are distinguishable from one another by mitochondrial (mt) DNA divergence of 2–3%, as well as by subtle morphological differences. The two forms are found in allopatry in south‐eastern British Columbia (BC), Canada, and adjacent areas of western Washington, USA, and are sympatric in three streams in the lower Fraser River valley, BC, and may represent cryptic species. We assayed 12 morphometric traits and two meristic characters (= 582; 23 sampling locations) to test for diagnosability of the two dace, as well as to test for morphological differentiation by mtDNA type in sympatry. We then employed a 10‐locus microsatellite DNA assay (= 374; 12 sampling locations) to test for genetic distinction between Nooksack dace and longnose dace in sympatry. We found that the two dace could not be reliably differentiated morphologically: there was overlap in all characters measured, and sampling location had a much larger effect on morphology than mtDNA group. Microsatellite analysis showed no distinction by mtDNA type in localities with sympatric dace, indicating complete admixture between the sympatric Nooksack dace and longnose dace. The Nooksack dace and longnose dace provide an example of ‘ephemeral speciation’: two lineages that, despite an estimated 1.1 Myr of isolation, have developed no apparent barriers to reproduction and appear to have collapsed into a single interbreeding population where they come into secondary contact. Nonetheless, the zone of secondary contact and the diagnosability of the Nooksack dace in terms of mtDNA represent significant aspects of the evolutionary legacy within R. cataractae and support its conservation importance.  相似文献

The threatened status of redside dace, Clinostomus elongatus, in Michigan inhibits study and management of remnant populations of the species. We present a phenotypic approach to evaluate the use of redside dace from New York as behavioral and physiological models for Michigan populations. We evaluated behavioral similarity by comparing patterns of microhabitat use and physiological similarity by comparing resting routine metabolic rates measured in the field. Variation between sites in available microhabitat made direct comparisons difficult; however, redside dace in Michigan and New York showed a common preference for mid-water positions in the deepest parts of pools under overhanging structure. Field measurements at 10°C showed that Michigan fish had higher metabolic rates than rates predicted for New York fish at the same temperature, though biological significance of this difference is questionable. In laboratory experiments, we measured metabolic rate and upper thermal tolerance in relation to acclimation temperatures of 6–20°C using redside dace collected from four streams in New York. Redside dace showed a significant increase in metabolic rate as acclimation temperature increased (Q10=2.3). Critical thermal maxima (CTM) of New York redside dace also increased with acclimation temperature. Obstacles related to the transferability of habitat use data and variation in physiology due to uncontrolled and unmeasured environmental factors in the field lead us to urge caution when extrapolating behavioral and physiological characteristics between widely-separated populations of a species. Despite these obstacles, we described useful patterns of microhabitat use and provided estimates of physiological tolerances that will assist resource managers in the recovery of Michigan redside dace.  相似文献

Ten novel polymorphic microsatellites were isolated from the dace complex (Leuciscus leuciscus), which is a European cyprinid species. Four multiplex polymerase chain reaction sets were optimized in order to genotype 26 polymorphic loci in all, including 16 previously published cyprinid-specific loci. The level of genetic diversity was assessed in 142 dace individuals. We also successfully applied 26 of the microsatellites to 10 related species. These primers thus will be useful to assess population structure of the dace and other cyprinid species, with application for conservation issues and phylogeographical approaches.  相似文献

The relationships between habitat variables and population densities of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou), rosyface dace (Leuciscus ezoe), Siberian stone loach (Noemacheilus barbatulus) and wrinklehead sculpin (Cottus nozawae) were examined by data collected at 55 reaches in forest and grassland streams in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Regression analysis suggested that salmon and dace densities were affected by water temperature (negative for salmon, positive for dace) and structural habitat factors (woody debris for salmon, pools for dace). Salmon density was higher in forest reaches than in grassland reaches, whereas dace density was higher in grassland reaches, suggesting that the removal of riparian forest had raised water temperature and allowed upstream invasions by dace. In contrast to salmon and dace, neither the density of loach nor sculpin differed between the forest and grassland reaches. For their densities, a negative effect of each on the other was most important, suggesting a strong effect of interspecific competition between loach and sculpin on their distributions. However, regression models also suggested that substrate heterogeneity mediated the outcome of their interspecific competition. On the basis of the results, a scenario is predicted for a fish-assemblage change with a typical land-development process in Hokkaido, and the importance of leaving or restoring riparian buffer for conservation and restoration of stream habitat is emphasized.  相似文献

The distribution and growth of roach and dace in the R. Exe catchment was studied. Distribution conformed to the classic theories of zonation, although human interference extended or reduced the range of species. Distinct differences were found in the growth rates of roach and dace between different regions of the catchment. Both species achieved their fastest growth in zones where the river topography portrayed their 'preferred' habitat characteristics, i.e. the fast-flowing middle and slow-flowing lower reaches for dace and roach, respectively. Female roach were found to grow considerably faster than male fish, whilst no sexual differentiation in growth rates was found in dace. Considerable fluctuations in year class strength were observed in both species.  相似文献

The hypothesis that blacknose dace Rhinichthys atratulus discriminate between piscivorous creek chub Semotilus atromaculatus and nonpiscivorous common suckers Catostomus commersoni was tested in a seminatural, artificial stream. Dace avoided the nonpredatory suckers less than they did the predatory chub, which they avoided during both day and night. However, dace significantly avoided the nonpredator at night. Further, experienced and inexperienced dace avoided the nonpredator similarly, suggesting that they had not learned to discriminate predator from nonpredator in their natural habitat. These results are consistent with two hypotheses (1) that individuals varied in ability to discriminate predatory from nonpredatory fishes, and (2) that the predator was more active than the nonpredator, thereby “frightening” the dace more. At temperatures of < 6°C the nonpredator was inactive and dace no longer avoided it at night, but continued to avoid the active chub, suggesting that movement constituted part of the avoidance-releasing stimulus. Because dace avoided nonpredators, they may waste time in natural streams avoiding harmless fish. It is suggested that the dace cannot afford the risk of a mistaken identity, which may be high in the stream environment, and selection favors those that avoid all large, moving fish.  相似文献

Relative abundance and within-lake distributions of three fishes, northern redbelly dace (Phoxinus eos), finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus), and central mudminnow (Umbra limi), were examined using minnow traps in Tuesday Lake, a small bog lake in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan. For these species, catches in minnow traps placed at the perimeter of the lake were 21 to 52 times higher than catches in midlake traps. Variance: mean ratios of perimeter trap catches indicated that both dace species were highly aggregated while the distribution of mudminnows was less aggregated or random. Over an 11 day period during which all fish caught were removed from the lake, catch per unit effort (CPUE) of both dace species declined in response to fish removal. In contrast, CPUE for mudminnows was low initially, increased to an asymptote and then declined only in the last 5 days of the fish removal. The patterns of CPUE for mudminnows indicated that mudminnow trapability and/or activity was reduced in the presence of high densities of dace. The low abundance of dace in traps with many mudminnows suggested mudminnows avoided traps already containing dace. Throughout the removal period, CPUE provided an accurate index of dace abundance, whereas this was true for mudmnnows only after dace populations had been reduced drastically. Therefore, in any use of minnow traps to estimate populations, both spatial distributions and relative species abundance of small fishes must be taken into account.  相似文献

Major life history characteristics of dace Leuciscus leuciscus from the R. Yenisei at Mirnoye (66° N, Central Siberia, Russia) were determined in June 1993 and were compared with those available throughout the distribution range of the species. Differences between populations located 25° further south and 8000 km away are smaller than those described for other freshwater fishes, whose distributions fall within that of dace. For all the populations, the growth rates ( K ) are inversely correlated with latitude but these rates for the actual growing season are faster in northern dace. The latitudinal (spatial) variations in the growth rates resemble the temporal variation described for the R. Frome (U.K.). Also, the variations in fecundity between populations are comparable to the temporal variations reported for this British river. Fecundity of the Yenisei dace was correlated with female length [log F=– 3–6284+4–0424 x log L ] but these females spawned lower numbers of eggs than other populations; and the size of their eggs, like those of the Siberian Ust'Ilim dace, did not vary with female length. We hypothesize that a similar spatio-temporal response to low water temperature, coupled with limitations of energy for reproduction, may result in a constant egg size in Siberian dace. The effects of other selective forces cannot, however, be excluded.  相似文献

Samples of Gammarus pulex and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus , taken from the River Avon, Hampshire, at intervals over a period of 9 years were examined for the presence of the acanthocephalan. Pomphorhynchus laevis. Changes in the incidence and intensity of infection of P. laevis in dace and in G. pulex and in the frequency distribution of P. laevis in dace were used as indicators of the population size of the parasite. Throughout the period of observation, the parasite showed a similar pattern of distribution along the length of the river, although at some sites its abundance varied from year to year. Levels of both incidence and intensity of infection of P. laevis in both hosts at one specific locality remained fairly constant over the 9-year period, and the annual variations fell within the natural range of monthly variation over any 12-month period. The frequency distribution of P. laevis in dace also exhibited a similar pattern throughout the period. It was thus concluded that the population size of P. laevis had not changed to any great extent over the 9 years. The factors responsible for this constancy are discussed in the light of conclusions drawn from earlier work.  相似文献

Individual rosyside dace Clinostomus funduloides in a semi-natural, artificial stream displayed substantial differences in their aggressiveness and could be classified as: (1) non-aggressive (NA, 18 of 30 rosyside dace), (2) moderately aggressive (MA, 9 of 30) and (3) highly aggressive (HA, 3 of 30). Rosyside dace groups, however, did not exhibit linear dominance hierarchies and fish size was only weakly correlated with the number of aggressive acts performed per individual. Small rosyside dace (<56 mm LF) were always non-aggressive, but larger fish were present in all three aggression classes. The difference in size between the contestants was significantly, although not very strongly, correlated with the probability of winning an agonistic interaction (r 2=0·39). Aggressive rosyside dace may have ultimately gained higher fitness than less aggressive ones. HA individuals occupied the upstream-most position within foraging groups significantly more often than other rosyside dace. This location should be the most profitable one because its occupant will be the first to encounter prey. HA rosyside dace also occupied significantly higher focal velocities that were closer to energetic optima than MA and NA ones. They also had greater foraging rates and were less solitary than less aggressive fish, but these differences only were significant at the P=0·066 and P=0·081 level, respectively. Finally, HA fish performed significantly more aggressive acts and feedings backwards than other individuals. Despite these differences, the effects of intraspecific aggression in rosyside dace appeared less substantial than those that have been observed in stream salmonids.  相似文献
