Freeze-dried banana powder represents an ideal source of nutrients and has not yet been used for probiotic incorporation. In this study, microencapsulation by freeze drying of probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casei was made using whey protein isolate (WPI), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and their combination (WPI + FOS) at ratio (1:1). Higher encapsulation yield was found for (WPI + FOS) microspheres (98%). Further, microcapsules of (WPI + FOS) were used to produce a freeze-dried banana powder which was analyzed for bacterial viability under simulated gastrointestinal fluid (SGIF), stability during storage at 4 °C and 25 °C, and chemical and sensory properties. Results revealed that (WPI + FOS) microcapsules significantly increased bacteria stability in the product over 30 days of storage at 4 °C averaging (≥ 8.57 log CFU/g) for L. acidophilus and (≥ 7.61 log CFU/g) for L. Casei as compared to free cells. Bacteria encapsulated in microspheres (WPI + FOS) were not significantly affected by the SGIF, remaining stable up to 7.05 ± 0.1 log CFU/g for L.acidophilus and 5.48 ± 0.1 log CFU/g for L.casei after 90 min of incubation at pH 2 compared to free cells which showed minimal survival. Overall, encapsulated probiotics enriched freeze-dried banana powders received good sensory scores; they can therefore serve as safe probiotics food carriers.

The influence of actively/passively encapsulated oleuropein on DPPC liposomes thermal and structural properties, and its antioxidant capacity against lipid peroxidation were investigated. Also, an oleuropein-rich olive leaf extract was encapsulated in soy phosphatidylcholine (PL-90 g) and incorporated in model and commercial drinks. Oleuropein induced a concentration-dependent broadening and splitting of the gel-to-liquid phase transition temperature. Fluorescence measurements revealed a fluidizing effect on liposomes below their gel-to-liquid phase transition temperature, and a higher lipid ordering above, especially to active encapsulation. Oleuropein also showed an antioxidant effect against lipid peroxidation in PL-90 g liposomes. PL-90 g Liposomes with olive leaf extract showed a mean diameter of 405 ± 4 nm and oleuropein encapsulation efficiency of 34% and delayed oleuropein degradation at pH 2.0 and 2.8 model drinks. In conclusion, greater effects were observed on the structure and fluidity of DPPC liposomes when oleuropein was actively encapsulated, while its incorporation into acidic foods in encapsulated form could enhance its stability.

Microencapsulation enhances the oral delivery of probiotic bacteria. In this study, the probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) was microencapsulated using alginate and chitosan nanoparticles. The result showed 90% encapsulation yield of EcN, and the encapsulated EcN displayed significantly (P < 0.05) increased survival in low pH (1.5), high bile salt concentration (4%), and high temperature (70 °C). The most effective cryopreservatives of EcN during freezing and thawing was skim milk and sucrose. Exposure to microencapsulated EcN significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the Campylobacter jejuni growth by 2 log CFU. The rate of EcN release from microcapsule was 9.2 × 105 cell min−1, and the appropriate model to describe its release kinetics was zero order. Importantly, the entrapment of EcN inside the microcapsule did not eliminate the exterior diffusion of EcN produced antioxidant compounds. In addition, the EcN microcapsule efficiently adhered to intestinal HT-29 cells and the pre-treatment of HT-29 cells with EcN-microcapsule for 4 h significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the invasion (1.9 log) of C. jejuni; whereas, completely abolished the intracellular survival. Furthermore, HT-29 cells pre-treated with encapsulated EcN in PCR array showed decreased expression (> 1.5-fold) of genes encoding chemokines, toll-like receptors, interleukins, and tumor necrosis factors. In conclusion, the alginate-chitosan microcapsule can provide effectual platform to deliver probiotic EcN and thereby can reduce the Campylobacter infection in chickens and humans.

The primary aim of our study was to determine the influence of taking chromium plus carnitine on insulin resistance, with a secondary objective of evaluating the influences on lipid profiles and weight loss in overweight subjects with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 54 overweight women were randomly assigned to receive either supplements (200 μg/day chromium picolinate plus 1000 mg/day carnitine) or placebo (27/each group). Chromium and carnitine co-supplementation decreased weight (− 3.6 ± 1.8 vs. − 1.0 ± 0.7 kg, P < 0.001), BMI (− 1.3 ± 0.7 vs. − 0.3 ± 0.3 kg/m2, P < 0.001), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (− 5.1 ± 6.0 vs. − 1.1 ± 4.9 mg/dL, P = 0.01), insulin (− 2.0 ± 1.4 vs. − 0.2 ± 1.2 μIU/mL, P < 0.001), insulin resistance (− 0.5 ± 0.4 vs. − 0.04 ± 0.3, P < 0.001), triglycerides (− 18.0 ± 25.2 vs. + 5.5 ± 14.4 mg/dL, P < 0.001), total (− 17.0 ± 20.3 vs. + 3.6 ± 12.0 mg/dL, P < 0.001), and LDL cholesterol (− 13.3 ± 19.2 vs. + 1.4 ± 13.3 mg/dL, P = 0.002), and elevated insulin sensitivity (+ 0.007 ± 0.005 vs. + 0.002 ± 0.005, P < 0.001). In addition, co-supplementation upregulated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (P = 0.02) and low-density lipoprotein receptor expression (P = 0.02). Overall, chromium and carnitine co-supplementation for 12 weeks to overweight women with PCOS had beneficial effects on body weight, glycemic control, lipid profiles except HDL cholesterol levels, and gene expression of PPAR-γ and LDLR. Many periodontal patients may need orthodontic treatment. Alterations in oral environment particularly the reduction of pH in periodontal patients could affect metal ion release from orthodontic appliances. However, there is no study on metal ion release in periodontal patients. The aim of this preliminary study was to comparatively evaluate, for the first time, salivary levels of nickel and chromium in periodontal patients (versus healthy controls) under orthodontic treatment for 2 months. In this in vivo study, 40 subjects were evaluated. Patient selection and standardization of orthodontic treatment protocols were prospectively designed and performed. Two groups of n = 20 each (control: healthy orthodontic patients, cohort: orthodontic patients with periodontitis) underwent similar protocols of fixed orthodontic treatment for 2 months. After 2 months, salivary nickel and chromium concentrations of the case and cohort groups were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The values were compared between the two groups using t test. There were 10 men and 10 women in each group. The mean age of patients was 34.6 ± 3.6 years old. The salivary level of nickel was 338.2 ± 235.5 ng/ml and 182.8 ± 116.5 ng/ml in the cohort and control groups, respectively (P = 0.0118). The salivary level of chromium was 7.4 ± 3.15 ng/ml in the cohort and 6.35 ± 2.39 ng/ml in the control group (P = 0.2214). Salivary level of nickel might be considerably higher in periodontal patients undergoing 2 months of orthodontic treatment compared to orthodontic patients with healthy gingivae.

The present study was designed to investigate the stimulatory effects of different doses (0.1 to 2.5 μM) of thidiazuron (TDZ) on in vitro shoot induction and proliferation of mature nodal explants of Tecoma stans. Of the tested concentrations, 2.0 μM TDZ proved to be optimal for maximum regeneration (91%) with a mean shoot number of 5.6 ± 0.67, and length of 2.38 ± 0.08 cm, after 4 wk of incubation. To determine the negative effects of prolonged TDZ exposure, after 4 wk of incubation at optimized level of TDZ, the cultures were transferred to a secondary medium either lacking plant growth regulators or supplemented with benzyladenine (BA) alone, or in combination with different auxins (indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-butyric acid, or α-naphthalene acetic acid; NAA). Among the tested concentrations, 2.5 μM BA in combination with 0.5 μM NAA yielded the maximum mean shoot number (16.60 ± 0.40), and average shoot length (4.76 ± 0.15 cm) after 4 wk of culture. The best rhizogenesis (93%) was achieved on ½ MS medium containing 1.5 μM NAA, with a mean root number of 7.60 ± 0.40 and length of 4.11 ± 0.23 cm, after 4 wk of incubation. The micropropagated plantlets were successfully acclimatized and hardened off in Soilrite™ with a 90% survival rate. The plantlets grew well with normal growth, flowering and showed, by gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy, an increase in the number of bioactive compounds compared with the donor plant. This is the first report on T. stans in vitro regeneration using TDZ.

To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first evaluating the effects of probiotic honey intake on glycemic control, lipid profiles, biomarkers of inflammation, and oxidative stress in patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN). This investigation was conducted to evaluate the effects of probiotic honey intake on metabolic status in patients with DN. This randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial was performed among 60 patients with DN. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups to receive either 25 g/day probiotic honey containing a viable and heat-resistant probiotic Bacillus coagulans T11 (IBRC-M10791) (108 CFU/g) or 25 g/day control honey (n = 30 each group) for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples were taken at baseline and 12 weeks after supplementation to quantify glycemic status, lipid concentrations, biomarkers of inflammation, and oxidative stress. After 12 weeks of intervention, patients who received probiotic honey compared with the control honey had significantly decreased serum insulin levels (− 1.2 ± 1.8 vs. − 0.1 ± 1.3 μIU/mL, P = 0.004) and homeostasis model of assessment-estimated insulin resistance (− 0.5 ± 0.6 vs. 0.003 ± 0.4, P = 0.002) and significantly improved quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (+ 0.005 ± 0.009 vs. − 0.0007 ± 0.005, P = 0.004). Additionally, compared with the control honey, probiotic honey intake has resulted in a significant reduction in total-/HDL-cholesterol (− 0.2 ± 0.5 vs. + 0.1 ± 0.1, P = 0.04). Probiotic honey intake significantly reduced serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (− 1.9 ± 2.4 vs. − 0.2 ± 2.7 mg/L, P = 0.01) and plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (− 0.1 ± 0.6 vs. + 0.6 ± 1.0 μmol/L, P = 0.002) compared with the control honey. Probiotic honey intake had no significant effects on other metabolic profiles compared with the control honey. Overall, findings from the current study demonstrated that probiotic honey consumption for 12 weeks among DN patients had beneficial effects on insulin metabolism, total-/HDL-cholesterol, serum hs-CRP, and plasma MDA levels, but did not affect other metabolic profiles. http://www.irct.ir: IRCT201705035623N115.

The natural antioxidant agent is urgently needed to prevent the negative effects of newly generated free radicals and chronic disorders. Recently, the microbial exopolysaccharide (EPS) is currently used as a potential biopolymer due to its unique biological characteristics. In this study, the biological potential was carried out on the EPSs produced by Lactobacillus reuteri SHA101 (EPS-lr) and Lactobacillus vaginalis SHA110 (EPS-lvg) isolated from gut cecum samples of healthy poultry birds (hen). As results, the EPS-lr and EPS-lvg showed the emulsifying activity of 37.8 ± 1.6% and 27.8 ± 0.5% after the 360 h, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy analysis of EPS-lr and EPS-lvg demonstrated a smooth surface with a compact structure. The both EPSs exhibited strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and Salmonella typhimurium in vitro. In additions, at 4 mg/mL concentration, the EPS-lr and EPS-lvg samples showed potent antioxidant activity regarding hydroxyl radical DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical, superoxide anion radical and reducing power at OD700 nm. Furthermore, the EPS-lr and EPS-lvg (600 μg/mL) possessed antitumor activity against colon cancer (Caco-2) cell after 72 h. The results suggested that these EPSs would have great potential in the application of antitumor and antioxidant foods, biomedicine, and pharmaceutics.

An efficient in vitro propagation system has been developed for the rapid micropropagation of Thymus serpyllum L. (Banajwain), an aromatic medicinal herb from nodal explant on MS medium. Phenolic leaching and high rate of contamination was the most significant problem in establishing in vitro culture of Thymus serpyllum which was overcome by preparing explants in an antioxidant ascorbic acid (1000 ppm) at 6°C for 45 min and addition of the same antioxidant (50 mgl−1) to the MS medium. The frequency of shoot production was influenced by different cytokinins (Kn, BAP, and Kn + BAP) and 95.56% shoot induction was observed when MS medium was supplemented with 1.0 + 2.0 mgl−1 (Kn + BAP). The maximum average number of shoots 16.93 ± 2.15 and average length (3.98 ± 0.55) was recorded when MS medium have 0.5 + 2.0 mgl−1 (Kn + BAP). The in vitro regenerated microshoots were rooted on MS and half strength MS medium and there was significant difference in root induction on both media under the influence of auxins (IAA, IBA, and NAA). The maximum average number (11.67 ± 3.03) and average root length (3.88 ± 0.71) was reported in half MS medium having 1.0 mgl−1 IBA. The complete regenerated plantlets were acclimatized under growth chamber before transferring to the earthen pots and showed 90% survival.

The impact of in-situ CO2 nano-bubbles generation on the freezing properties of soft serve, milk, and apple juice was investigated. Carbonated (0, 1000, and 2000 ppm) liquid foods contained in a tube were submerged and cooled for 90 min in a pre-set ethylene glycol bath (−15 °C). Before the enclosed liquid reached 0 °C, the vibration was discharged through ultrasound in the bath to create nano-bubbles within the carbonated food samples, and the changes in temperature for 90 min of each food were recorded as a freezing curve. The time for onset of nucleation of control soft serve mix was halved in samples with 2000-ppm CO2 due to the presence of nano-bubbles. Likewise, the nucleation time for milk with and without nano-bubbles at the same CO2 concentration of 2000 ppm was 7.9 ± 0.1 and 2.8 ± 0.8 min, respectively. The generation of CO2 nano-bubbles from 2000-ppm CO2 level in 10 oBx apple juice displayed −9.3 ± 0.3 °C nucleation temperature while the control one had −11.7 ± 0.9 °C.

The present study investigated the effect of enriched Artemia with Bacillus subtilis on growth performance, reproductive factors, proximate composition, intestinal microflora, and resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila of ornamental fish, Poecilia latipinna. Using a completely randomized design, the experiment included three groups. The first group was fed with commercial food without any probiotic. The second group was fed with unenriched Artemia, and the last group consumed long-time enriched Artemia with Bacillus subtilis. The bacteria B. subtilis with a density of 1 × 105 CFU mL−1 was added daily to Artemia culture medium. The total microflora and Bacillus subtilis counts were significantly increased in enriched Artemia compared to the unenriched group (P < 0.05). In fish fed groups, growth factors did not show any significant difference (P > 0.05). The maximum relative fecundity (28.65 ± 2.52 egg number g−1), fry production (62.93 ± 4.6 individual per female), and fry survival (70.97 ± 1.56%) obtained in the third group were found to be significantly more than those in the first and the second groups. Moreover, intestinal bacterial count for Bacillus revealed that the higher concentration of bacteria was significantly related to the third group (6.24 ± 0.11 log CFU g−1) (P < 0.05). Maximum protein and fat contents were observed in fish fed with Bacillus-enriched Artemia; however, no significant difference was found between control and unenriched Artemia groups (P > 0.05). The highest amount of ash was observed in fish fed with commercial food without any probiotic (P < 0.05). At the end of the feeding period, each of the three groups along with positive group (oxytetracycline 100 mg kg−1 of commercial food) was exposed to A. hydrophila (BCCM5/LMG3770) bacteria intraperitoneally. Based on the results, the lowest cumulative mortality was significantly found in group three (68.75 ± 3.6%) and positive group (62.5 ± 7.0%) compared to control and unenriched Artemia groups (P < 0.05). Hence, B. subtilis with a concentration of 1 × 105 CFU mL−1 during the period of Artemia culturing can improve the reproductive parameters, intestinal microflora, and resistance to pathogenic bacteria of Poecilia latipinna.

Dietary protein alters circulating amino acid (AAs) levels and higher protein intake (HP) is one means of losing weight. We examined 34 overweight and obese women (57 ± 4 years) during 6 months of energy restriction (7.3 ± 3.8% weight loss) divided into groups consuming either normal protein (NP; 18.6 energy% protein) or HP (24.3 energy% protein). There was a reduction in fasting serum glucogenic AAs (p = 0.015) that also associated with greater weight loss (p < 0.05) in the HP group, but not in the NP group. These findings have implications for nutrient prioritization during energy restriction.

Glycyrrhizin (GL), the principal sweet-tasting bioactive ingredient of licorice (root of Glycyrrhiza glabra), shows poor oral absorption and gut microbial transformation of GL to glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) plays a major role for its multiple pharmacological effects. Co-administration of GL-hydrolyzing bacteria appears to be a feasible strategy to enhance GA exposure. This study reported a gut bacterial strain Staphylococcus pasteuri 3I10 which exhibited moderate p-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucuronide (PNPG)-hydrolyzing activity but low GL deglucuronidation activity in its crude lysate. The gus gene encoding S. pasteuri 3I10 β-glucuronidase was successfully cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). The purified β-glucuronidase (SpasGUS) was 71 kDa and showed optimal pH and temperature at 6.0 and 50 °C, respectively. Comparing to E. coli β-glucuronidase (EcoGUS), SpasGUS displayed lower velocity and affinity to PNPG hydrolysis (Vmax 16.1 ± 0.9 vs 140.0 ± 4.1 μmolmin−1 mg−1; Km 469.4 ± 73.4 vs 268.0 ± 25.8 μM), but could selectively convert GL to GA at much higher efficiency (Vmax 0.41 ± 0.011 vs 0.005 ± 0.002 μmolmin−1 mg−1; Km 116.9 ± 15.4 vs 53.4 ± 34.8 μM). Molecular docking studies suggested SpasGUS formed hydrogen bond interactions with the glucuronic acids at Asn414, Glu415 and Leu450, and Val159, Tyr475, Ala368, and Phe367 provided a hydrophobic environment for enhanced activity. Two special substrate interaction loops near the binding pocket of SpasGUS (loop 1 β-glucuronidase) may account for the selective and efficient bioconversion of GL to GA, predicting that loop 1 β-glucuronidases show high possibility in processing GL than mini-loop 1 and loop 2 β-glucuronidases. These findings support potential applications of SpasGUS in cleaving GL to facilitate GA production in vivo or in pharmaceutical industry.

Background

Healthy atrial fibrillation (AF) patients will eventually outgrow their low thromboembolic risk. The purpose of this study is to compare the development of cardiovascular disease in healthy AF patients as compared to healthy sinus rhythm patients and to assess appropriate anticoagulation treatment.

Methods

Forty-one idiopathic paroxysmal AF patients (56 ± 10 years, 66% male) were compared with 45 healthy sinus rhythm patients. Patients were free of hypertension, antihypertensive and antiarrhythmic drugs, diabetes, congestive heart failure, coronary artery or peripheral vascular disease, previous stroke, thyroid, pulmonary and renal disease, and structural abnormalities on echocardiography.

Results

Baseline characteristics and echocardiographic parameters were the same in both groups. During 10.7 ± 1.6 years, cardiovascular disease and all-cause death developed significantly more often in AF patients as compared to controls (63% vs 31%, log rank p < 0.001). Even after the initial 5 years of follow-up, survival curves show divergent patterns (log rank p = 0.006). Mean duration to reach a CHA2DS2-VASc score > 1 among AF patients was 5.1 ± 3.0 years. Five of 24 (21%) patients with CHA2DS2-VASc > 1 did not receive oral anticoagulation therapy at follow-up. Mean duration of over- or undertreatment with oral anticoagulation in patients with CHA2DS2-VASc > 1 was 5 ± 3.0 years.

Conclusion

The majority of recently diagnosed healthy AF patients develop cardiovascular diseases with a consequent change in thromboembolic risk profile within a short time frame. A comprehensive follow-up of this patient category is necessary to avoid over- and undertreatment with anticoagulants.

The effects of 50–150 gray electron-beam irradiation on the biofilm-formation ability and cell surface hydrophobicity of the commercial strain, Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS®-1, from Lacto-G (a marketed synbiotic formulation) and the putative probiotic, L. rhamnosus Vahe, were evaluated. No significant changes in cell surface hydrophobicity were found after irradiation, while increases in biofilm-formation abilities were documented for both investigated microorganisms 0.22 ± 0.03 vs. 0.149 ± 0.02 (L. rhamnosus Vahe, 150 Gy) and 0.218 ± 0.021 vs. 0.17 ± 0.012 (L. acidophilus DDS®-1, 150 Gy). Given this, the use of electron-beam irradiation (50–100 Gy) for the treatment of L. rhamnosus Vahe and L. acidophilus DDS®-1 cells may be considered in product sterilization, quality improvement, and packaging practices.

Echinodorus ‘Indian Red’ is an underwater plant, used worldwide for aquarium ornamentation. An efficient method for in vitro propagation and plantlet acclimatization of this popular aquarium plant was standardized. Surface-disinfected shoot-tips were cultured in submerged conditions in a solid–liquid bilayer medium, consisting of an upper, liquid layer (sterile distilled water) and a lower, solid layer Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 3.0% (w/v) sucrose, 0.8% (w/v) agar-agar, and plant growth regulators (PGRs) in different combinations and concentrations. The combination of 2.5 mg L−1 6-benzylaminopurine and 1.0 mg L−1 α-naphthaleneacetic acid improved the multiplication rate to a maximum of 26.8 ± 0.51 shoots per explant after 60 d of culture. The number of multiplied shoots increased with each regeneration cycle, thus from only 26.8 ± 0.51 shoots per explant (first regeneration cycle), this number increased to 33.5 ± 0.58 (second regeneration cycle), and to 38.3 ± 0.62 for the third regeneration cycle with the same medium composition. The highest number of roots (8.3 ± 0.28) per shoot was induced in the presence of 1.0 mg L−1 indole-3-butyric acid, but further growth of these roots was stunted. The best rooting was achieved on PGR-free ½-strength MS medium, where 6.1 ± 0.21 roots per shoot were induced with 5.8 ± 0.35 cm length after 30 d of culture. The regenerated plantlets were successfully acclimatized to submerged underwater conditions, with 100% survival rate. The present protocol is suitable for the commercial propagation of Echinodorus ‘Indian Red’ for aquarium-industries.

Inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which have an important role in the prevention of excessive AChE activity and β-amyloid (Aβ) formation are widely used in the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The inhibitory effect of anesthetic agents on AChE was determined by several approaches, including binding mechanisms, molecular docking and kinetic analysis. Inhibitory effect of intravenous anesthetics on AChE as in vitro and in vivo have been discovered. The midazolam, propofol and thiopental have shown competitive inhibition type (midazolam > propofol > thiopental) and Ki values were found to be 3.96.0 ± 0.1, 5.75 ± 0.12 and 29.65 ± 2.04 µM, respectively. The thiopental and midazolam showed inhibition effect on AChE in vitro, whereas they showed activation effect in vivo when they are combined together. The order of binding of the drugs to the active site of the 4M0E receptor was found to be midazolam > propofol > thiopental. This study on anesthetic agents that are now widely used in surgical applications, have provided a molecular basis for investigating the drug-enzyme interactions mechanism. In addition, the study is important in understanding the molecular mechanism of inhibitors that are effective in the treatment of AD.

Stress fibers (SFs) in cells transmit external forces to cell nuclei, altering the DNA structure, gene expression, and cell activity. To determine whether SFs are involved in mechanosignal transduction upon intraluminal pressure, this study investigated the SF direction in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in aortic tissue and strain in the SF direction. Aortic tissues were fixed under physiological pressure of 120 mmHg. First, we observed fluorescently labeled SFs using two-photon microscopy. It was revealed that SFs in the same smooth muscle layers were aligned in almost the same direction, and the absolute value of the alignment angle from the circumferential direction was 16.8° ± 5.2° (n = 96, mean ± SD). Second, we quantified the strain field in the aortic tissue in reference to photo-bleached markers. It was found in the radial-circumferential plane that the largest strain direction was − 21.3° ± 11.1°, and the zero normal strain direction was 28.1° ± 10.2°. Thus, the SFs in aortic SMCs were not in line with neither the largest strain direction nor the zero strain direction, although their orientation was relatively close to the zero strain direction. These results suggest that SFs in aortic SMCs undergo stretch, but not maximal and transmit the force to nuclei under intraluminal pressure.

Depression and Anxiety are two important public health problems that are known to be associated with viral infections. The association between the intake of nutrients such as zinc and copper with symptoms of depression has been studied previously. The aim of the current study was to investigate the association between depression with human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection and serum content of zinc and copper in a large Iranian population cohort. The study population consisted of 279 HTLV-1-positive patients who were identified after recruitment as part of a large cohort study: the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Association Disorder (MASHAD) study. They were divided into two groups of diagnosed with or without depression based on their symptoms. Serum zinc and copper levels of all subjects were measured using the flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The population sample comprised of 279 individuals infected with HTLV-1 of whom 192 (68.8%) were women. The mean serum zinc in the group with and without depression was 78.69 ± 13.79 μg/dl and 86.87 ± 19.44 μg/dl, respectively (p < 0.001). Also, the serum copper level was higher in the depressive group (116.75 ± 39.56) than in the non-depressive group (104.76 ± 30.77) (p 0.004). The association between serum zinc and copper with depression in HTLV-1-infected patients which was shown in this study could be considered in the treatment strategies in these patients.
