Sexual traits are subject to evolutionary forces that maximize reproductive benefits and minimize survival costs, both of which can depend on environmental conditions. Latitude explains substantial variation in environmental conditions. However, little is known about the relationship between sexual trait variation and latitude, although body size often correlates with latitude. We examined latitudinal variation in male and female sexual traits in 22 populations of the false blister beetle Oedemera sexualis in the Japanese Archipelago. Males possess massive hind legs that function as a female‐grasping apparatus, while females possess slender hind legs that are used to dislodge mounting males. Morphometric analyses revealed that male and female body size (elytron length), length and width of the hind femur and tibia, and allometric slopes of these four hind leg dimensions differed significantly among populations. Of these, three traits showed latitudinal variation, namely, male hind femur was stouter; female hind tibia was slenderer, and female body was smaller at lower latitudes than at higher latitudes. Hind leg sizes and shapes, as measured by principal component analysis of these four hind leg dimensions in each sex, covaried significantly between sexes, suggesting coevolutionary diversification in sexual traits. Covariation between sexes was weaker when variation in these traits with latitude was removed. These results suggest that coevolutionary diversification between male and female sexual traits is mediated by environmental conditions that vary with latitude.  相似文献

Osteoarthritis causes the degradation of the articular cartilage and periarticular bones. Trace elements influence the growth, development and condition of the bone tissue. Changes to the mineral composition of the bone tissue can cause degenerative changes and fractures. The aim of the research was to determine the content of cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the tibia, the femur and the meniscus in men and women who underwent a knee replacement surgery. Samples were collected from 50 patients, including 36 women and 14 men. The determination of trace elements content were performed by ICP-AES method, using Varian 710-ES. Average concentration in the tissues of the knee joint teeth amounted for cadmium 0.015, nickel 0.60, copper 0.89 and zinc 80.81 mg/kg wet weight. There were statistically significant differences in the content of cadmium, copper and zinc in different parts of the knee joint. There were no statistically significant differences in the content of cadmium, nickel, copper and zinc in women and men in the examined parts of the knee joint. Among the elements tested, copper and nickel showed a high content in the connective tissue (the meniscus) compared to the bone tissue (the tibia and the femur).  相似文献

A three-dimensional model of the knee is developed to study the interactions between the muscles, ligaments, and bones during activity. The geometry of the distal femur, proximal tibia, and patella is based on cadaver data reported for an average-size knee. The shapes of the femoral condyles are represented by high-order polynomials: the tibial plateaux and patellar facets are approximated as flat surfaces. The contacting surfaces of the femur and tibia are modeled as deformable, while those of the femur and patella are assumed to be rigid. Interpenetration of the femur and tibia is taken into account by modeling cartilage as a thin, linear, elastic layer, mounted on rigid bone. Twelve elastic elements describe the geometry and mechanical properties of the cruciate ligaments, the collateral ligaments, and the posterior capsule. The model is actuated by thirteen musculotendinous units, each unit modeled as a three-element muscle in series with tendon. The path of each muscle is approximated as a straight line, except where it contacts and wraps around bone and other muscles; changes in muscle paths are taken into account using data obtained from MRI. In the first part of this paper, the model is used to simulate passive knee flexion. Quantitative comparisons of the model results with experimental data reported in the literature indicate that the relative movements of the bones and the geometry of the ligaments and muscles in the model are similar to those evident in the real knee. In Part II, the model is used to describe knee-ligament function during anterior-posterior draw, axial rotation, and isometric knee-extension and knee-flexion exercises.  相似文献

The menisci of the knee are two crescent shaped cartilage shock absorbers sitting between the femur and the tibia, which act as load sharers and shock absorbers. Loss of a meniscus leads to a significant increase in the risk of developing arthritis in the knee. Replacement of a missing meniscus with allograft tissue can reduce symptoms and may potentially reduce the risk of future arthritis. Meniscal allograft transplantation is a complex surgical procedure with many outstanding issues, including ‘what techniques should be used for processing and storing grafts?’, ‘how should the allografts be sized?’ and ‘what surgical implantation techniques might be most appropriate?’ Further clinical research is needed and close collaboration between the users (surgeons) and the suppliers (tissue banks) is essential. This review explores the above subject in detail.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to comparatively analyze the results of traditional X-ray study and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in traumatic knee injuries. The comparative analysis could reveal diagnostic errors in more than 54% of cases. The early use of MRI to diagnose intraarticular fractures of the distal femur, proximal tibia, and patella favors the right choice of a surgical treatment policy.  相似文献

Excessive knee joint laxity is often used as an indicator of joint disease or injury. Clinical assessment devices are currently limited to anterior–posterior drawer measurements, while tools used to measure movement in the remaining degrees of freedom are either invasive or prone to soft tissue artefact. The objective of this work was, therefore, to develop a methodology whereby in vivo knee joint kinematics could be measured in three dimensions under torsional loading while still maintaining a non-invasive procedure. A device designed to administer a subject-normalized torque in the transverse plane of the knee was securely fastened to the outer frame of an open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnet. Low resolution 3D T1-weighted images (6.25 mm slice thickness) were generated by the 0.2 Tesla MRI scanner in less than 3 min while the joint was under load. The 3D image volume was then shape-matched to a high resolution image volume (1.56 mm slice thickness) scanned in a no-load position. Three-dimensional rotations and translations of the tibia with respect to the femur were calculated by comparing the transformation matrices before and after torque was applied. Results from six subjects showed that this technique was repeatable over five trials with the knee in extended and flexed positions. Differences in range of rotation were shown between subjects and between knee positions, suggesting that this methodology has sufficient utility for further application in clinical studies.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce the concept of the functional (or equivalent) geometry of the knee, which is an attempt to reduce the natural knee with its complex geometry, frictional resistance and deformable cartilage into a two-dimensional joint comprising rigid femur and tibia in frictionless contact. An apparatus and method are described to measure the slope of the tangent to the surfaces of the 'equivalent' bones at their 'point' of contact. An antero posterior force of +/-300-500 N and axial compressive load of twice body weight were applied on cadaveric knee joints. The corresponding displacement of the tibia in the saggital plane was measured firstly with both cruciates intact and then when each was severed in turn. From the data obtained both the slope of the tangent mentioned above and the tensions developed along the cruciates under the influence of the forces applied were calculated. The results showed that the functional geometry of the knee in the saggital plane can be represented by a convex femur and a concave tibia. The tensions along the cruciates calculated on the basis of the experimental measurements were nearly always lower than the antero posterior force applied, and although this corroborated the trend demonstrated in a previous theoretical analysis, they were lower still. The reason for this may be the deformation of the cartilage under load, thus modifying the geometry of contact resulting in a more concave tibia of the 'equivalent' knee joint, than that of the rigid model used in the theoretical analysis.  相似文献

The relationships between extrinsic forces acting at the knee and knee kinematics were examined with the purpose of identifying specific phases of the walking cycle that could cause abnormal kinematics in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficient knee. Intersegmental forces and moments in directions that would produce anterior-posterior (AP) translation, internal-external (IE) rotation and flexion-extension (FE) at the knee were compared with the respective translation and rotations of the tibia relative to the femur during four selected phases (heel strike, weight acceptance, terminal extension and swing) of the walking cycle. The kinematic changes associated with loss of the ACL occurred primarily during the terminal portion of swing phase of the walking cycle where, for the ACL deficient knee, the tibia had reduced external rotation and anterior translation as the knee extended prior to heel strike. The kinematic changes during swing phase were associated with a rotational offset relative to the contralateral knee in the average position of the tibia towards internal rotation. The offset was maintained through the entire gait cycle. The abnormal offsets in the rotational position were correlated with the magnitude of the flexion moment (balanced by a net quadriceps moment) during weight acceptance. These results suggest that adaptations to the patterns of muscle firing during walking can compensate for kinematic changes associated with the loss of the ACL. The altered rotational position would cause changes in tibiofemoral contact during walking that could cause the type of degenerative changes reported in the meniscus and the articular cartilage following ACL injury.  相似文献

Quantifying sex differences in femoral size and shape has extensive applications in forensics and prosthesis design. By applying strong statistical techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA), certain three-dimensional (3D) morphological variations of adult femora can be quantified over various femoral sizes. Coupling this statistical approach with a novel feature generation and extraction technique, localization of statistically significant (p<0.05) features are automatically defined and measured. Also, predefined anatomical landmarks and surgical axes have been calculated automatically. In all methods, femoral scale is controlled as a possible parameter of shape. By extensively comparing measurements across 92 male and 74 female femora, the dimorphic characteristics of the distal femur are shown. These differences have not been accounted for in many prosthetic systems and consequently these systems have limited sizing accuracy.  相似文献

Biomechanical research relies heavily on laboratory evaluation and testing with osseous animal structures. While many femora models are currently in use, including those of the European red deer (Cervus elaphus), the Odocoileus virginianus femur remains undocumented, despite its regional abundance in North America. The objective of this study was to compare biomechanical and morphological properties of the Odocoileus virginianus femur with those of the human and commonly used animal models. Sixteen pairs of fresh-frozen cervine femora (10 male, 6 female, aged 2.1 ± 0.9 years) were used for this study. Axial and torsional stiffnesses (whole bone) were calculated following compression and torsion to failure tests (at rates of 0.1 mm/sec and 0.2°/sec). Lengths, angles, femoral head diameter and position, periosteal and endosteal diaphyseal dimensions, and condylar dimensions were measured. The results show that the cervine femur is closer in length, axial and torsional stiffness, torsional strength, and overall morphology to the human femur than many other commonly used animal femora models; additional morphological measurements are comparable to many other species’ femora. The distal bicondylar width of 59.3mm suggests that cervine femora may be excellent models for use in total knee replacement simulations. Furthermore, the cervine femoral head is more ovoid than other commonly-used models for hip research, making it a more suitable model for studies of hip implants. Thus, with further, more application-specific investigations, the cervine femur could be a suitable model for biomechanical research, including the study of ballistic injuries and orthopaedic device development.  相似文献

The movement of the knee joint consists of a coupled motion between the tibiofemoral and patellofemoral articulations. This study measured the six degrees-of-freedom kinematics of the tibia, femur, and patella using dual-orthogonal fluoroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging. Ten normal knees from ten living subjects were investigated during weightbearing flexion from full extension to maximum flexion. The femoral and the patellar motions were measured relative to the tibia. The femur externally rotated by 12.9 deg and the patella tilted laterally by 16.3 deg during the full range of knee flexion. Knee flexion was strongly correlated with patellar flexion (R(2)=0.91), posterior femoral translation was strongly correlated to the posterior patellar translation (R(2)=0.87), and internal-external rotation of the femur was correlated to patellar tilt (R(2)=0.73) and medial-lateral patellar translation (R(2)=0.63). These data quantitatively indicate a kinematic coupling between the tibia, femur, and patella, and provide base line information on normal knee joint kinematics throughout the full range of weightbearing flexion. The data also suggest that the kinematic coupling of tibia, femur, and patella should be considered when investigating patellar pathologies and when developing surgical techniques to treat knee joint diseases.  相似文献

The present study measured early-stage adaptation of bone mineral (BMD) in the periarticular cancellous bone of the canine knee (stifle) joint after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) transection (ACLX). Regional changes in BMD in the tibia and femur were analyzed by using quantitative computed tomography (qCT) at 3 wk and 12 wk after unilateral ACLX to determine whether there were focal points for BMD changes and whether these changes occurred early after the induced knee injury. BMD decreased rapidly after ACLX, and the more pronounced response was in the femur. In the 3-wk group, there were decreases in BMD in the tibia and the femur, and these changes were significant in the posterior-medial region of the femur, which showed a decrease of BMD in the ACLX limb (-0.048 +/- 0.011 g/cm(3)). In the 12-wk group, all regions in the tibia and femur exhibited significant decreases in BMD, and the average decrease was greatest in the posterior-medial region of the femur (-0.142 +/- 0.021 g/cm(3)). The regions of pronounced periarticular cancellous BMD adaptation corresponded to observed focal cartilage defects. Early decreases in BMD in the injured knee may be related to altered loading and kinematics in the knee and may be an important link in the pathogenesis of posttraumatic osteoarthritis.  相似文献

In the dung fly Sepsis cynipsea large and more symmetric males have been shown to enjoy a mating advantage, but we still do not know which mechanism of sexual selection is responsible. Here we test several assumptions and predictions relating to the hypothesis that either trait is indicative of ‘good genes’. We tested for good genes by regressing fitness in good and bad environments (no and high larval competition, respectively) on the family mean for size or asymmetry as expressed in the good environment, separately for both sexes. Body size (hind tibia length or head width) was positively correlated with female fecundity, growth rate of both sexes and larval survivorship for males, but only in the good environment. The corresponding evidence for asymmetry is more equivocal. Mean standardised asymmetry was weakly associated with lower survivorship in the good environment, while growth rates and female fecundity were not. As predicted by sexual selection theory, fore tibia length showed greater asymmetry than other, presumably not sexually selected traits, and asymmetry in fore tibia length was greater for males than females. However, a negative correlation between trait size and asymmetry was only evident for male seta length but not for fore tibia length, fore femur length, or any composite measure of asymmetry. Most crucially, asymmetry was heritable for some female morphological traits (hind tibia length: h2 = 0.15; fore femur length: h2 = 0.16; mean of all measured traits: h2 = 0.27), but not for any male trait. Also, asymmetry of the various traits measured was not correlated within males and only weakly so within females. The crucial assumption that asymmetry of sexually selected traits reflects overall, heritable developmental stability of an individual is thus only partly substantiated by our data. In contrast, large body size is heritable, associated with high fitness and consequently could be indicative of good genes. Fore leg asymmetry may influence male mating success by simply mechanically constraining his ability to hold on to the female.  相似文献

Red blood cell AChE (RBC-AChE) and plasma BChE can be used as sensitive biomarkers to detect exposure to OP nerve agents, pesticides, and cholinergic drugs. In a comparative study, RBC-AChE and serum BChE activities in whole blood was obtained from forty seven healthy male and female human volunteers, and then exposed separately ex vivo to three OP nerve agents (soman (GD), sarin (GB) and VX) to generate a wide range of inhibition of AChE and BChE activity (up to 90% of control). These samples were measured using four different ChE assays: (i) colorimetric microEllman (using DTNB at 412 nm), (ii) Test-mate ChE field kit (also based on the Ellman assay), (iii) Michel (delta pH), and (iv) the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Whole Blood (WRAIR WB) cholinesterase assay. The WRAIR assay is a modified Ellman method using DTP at 324 nm (which minimizes hemoglobin interference and improves sensitivity), and determines AChE and BChE in a small whole blood sample simultaneously. Scatter plots of RBC-AChE activities were determined using the WRAIR ChE assay versus the micro-Ellman, Test-mateTM and Michel after exposure to varying concentrations of soman, sarin and VX. Regression analyses yielded mostly linear relationships with high correlations (r2 = 0.83-0.93) for RBC-AChE values in the WRAIR assay compared to the alternate methods. For the plasma BChE measurements, individual human values were significantly more variable (as expected), resulting in lower correlations using WRAIR ChE versus the alternate assays (r2 values 0.5 - 0.6). To circumvent the limitations of simple correlation analysis, Bland and Altman analysis for comparing two independent measurement techniques was performed. For example, a Bland and Altman plot of the ratio of the WRAIR whole blood AChE and Michel AChE (plotted on the y-axis) vs. the average of the two methods (x-axis) shows that the majority of the individual AChE values are within +/- 1.96 S.D. of the mean difference, indicating that the two methods may be used interchangeably with a high degree of confidence. The WRAIR ChE assay can be thus be used as a reliable inter-conversion assay when comparing results from laboratory-based (Michel) and field-based (Test-mateTM ChE kit), which use different methodology and report in different units of AChE activity.  相似文献

Background

There is an emerging interest in using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2* measurement for the evaluation of degenerative cartilage in osteoarthritis (OA). However, relatively few studies have addressed OA-related changes in adjacent knee structures. This study used MRI T2* measurement to investigate sequential changes in knee cartilage, meniscus, and subchondral bone marrow in a rat OA model induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLX).

Materials and Methods

Eighteen male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly separated into three groups (n = 6 each group). Group 1 was the normal control group. Groups 2 and 3 received ACLX and sham-ACLX, respectively, of the right knee. T2* values were measured in the knee cartilage, the meniscus, and femoral subchondral bone marrow of all rats at 0, 4, 13, and 18 weeks after surgery.

Results

Cartilage T2* values were significantly higher at 4, 13, and 18 weeks postoperatively in rats of the ACLX group than in rats of the control and sham groups (p<0.001). In the ACLX group (compared to the sham and control groups), T2* values increased significantly first in the posterior horn of the medial meniscus at 4 weeks (p = 0.001), then in the anterior horn of the medial meniscus at 13 weeks (p<0.001), and began to increase significantly in the femoral subchondral bone marrow at 13 weeks (p = 0.043).

Conclusion

Quantitative MR T2* measurements of OA-related tissues are feasible. Sequential change in T2* over time in cartilage, meniscus, and subchondral bone marrow were documented. This information could be potentially useful for in vivo monitoring of disease progression.  相似文献

As a step towards developing a finite element model of the knee that can be used to study how the variables associated with a meniscal replacement affect tibio-femoral contact, the goals of this study were 1) to develop a geometrically accurate three-dimensional solid model of the knee joint with special attention given to the menisci and articular cartilage, 2) to determine to what extent bony deformations affect contact behavior, and 3) to determine whether constraining rotations other than flexion/extension affects the contact behavior of the joint during compressive loading. The model included both the cortical and trabecular bone of the femur and tibia, articular cartilage of the femoral condyles and tibial plateau, both the medial and lateral menisci with their horn attachments, the transverse ligament, the anterior cruciate ligament, and the medial collateral ligament. The solid models for the menisci and articular cartilage were created from surface scans provided by a noncontacting, laser-based, three-dimensional coordinate digitizing system with an root mean squared error (RMSE) of less than 8 microns. Solid models of both the tibia and femur were created from CT images, except for the most proximal surface of the tibia and most distal surface of the femur which were created with the three-dimensional coordinate digitizing system. The constitutive relation of the menisci treated the tissue as transversely isotropic and linearly elastic. Under the application of an 800 N compressive load at 0 degrees of flexion, six contact variables in each compartment (ie., medial and lateral) were computed including maximum pressure, mean pressure, contact area, total contact force, and coordinates of the center of pressure. Convergence of the finite element solution was studied using three mesh sizes ranging from an average element size of 5 mm by 5 mm to 1 mm by 1 mm. The solution was considered converged for an average element size of 2 mm by 2 mm. Using this mesh size, finite element solutions for rigid versus deformable bones indicated that none of the contact variables changed by more than 2% when the femur and tibia were treated as rigid. However, differences in contact variables as large as 19% occurred when rotations other than flexion/extension were constrained. The largest difference was in the maximum pressure. Among the principal conclusions of the study are that accurate finite element solutions of tibio-femoral contact behavior can be obtained by treating the bones as rigid. However, unrealistic constraints on rotations other than flexion/extension can result in relatively large errors in contact variables.  相似文献
